HS2 go-ahead is Major boost to construction skills demand

February, the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s cabinet gave approval for the whole of the HS2 project to go ahead. The work is expected to start in a matter of weeks. Johnson confirmed in the house of commons that he is committed to both the London to Birmingham rail line and the next phase from Birmingham to Leeds and Manchester. Research analysis found that phases one and two of the project will generate substantial job opportunities in construction, says CITB. Skills in particular demand will be construction trade supervisors, plant operatives, steel erectors, labourers, civil engineers, civil engineering operatives and construction project managers. CITB Policy Director, Steve Radley, said: “Today’s decision will increase the demand for a range of skills in construction but the certainty will give the industry the confidence to invest in apprenticeships and upskilling its workforce. And the opportunity to work a game-changing project will help construction to attract the next generation of workers.”

French village take delivery of liebherr mk 88 mobile crane MAXILEVAGE,

became increasingly aware of the potential the mobile construction crane holds for the island. Consequently, the crane was already in operation in January for the installation of an air-conditioning system and for the unloading of shipping containers.

Handover of the mobile construction crane took place in Guadeloupe, a French overseas department in the southern Caribbean, at the Maxilevage depot in Sainte Rose. The company was provided with an introduction to the machine on site. Managing Director Daniel Gengoul was impressed and commented: “Assembly is simple and the mobile construction crane is very flexible in its range of operation.” As training continued, he

Maxilevage has 20 years of experience in the handling and transportation of bulky loads and now wants to expand its fleet with the MK 88, a perfect addition to its existing mobile cranes. On the one hand, the MK 88 requires very little space and can be positioned directly next to the building. On the other hand, it still has an impressive reach of 45 metres as well as an eight-tonne maximum load capacity.

Nominations Now Invited for CPA Stars of the Future 2020 Awards THE

Construction Planthire Association’s (CPA) Stars of the Future awards scheme is being expanded in 2020 with both national and regional awards for Plant Mechanics, Plant Technicians, Lifting Technicians, Plant Operators and Hire Controllers across the UK. Stars of the Future nominations are invited from plant-hire companies, manufacturers, contractors, suppliers and others operating in the construction plant sector. Nomination forms are available on the CPA website at https://www.cpa.uk.net/ starsdownloads/ and following the judging process, winners will be announced at the Stars of the Future awards ceremony being

hosted at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley near Coventry on Wednesday 10th June 2020. The closing date for nominations is Thursday 9th April 2020. Stars of the Future is a national awards scheme for apprentices and trainees in the construction plant-hire industry, organised by the CPA, the leading trade association for the plant-hire sector in the UK. The CPA has over 1,700 members who supply 85% of hired plant to the construction industry. Traditionally, Stars of the Future has rewarded Plant Mechanics but the scope of the 2020 event is being extended further. There are now a total of five

categories, with national and regional awards for Plant Mechanics (Level 2), Plant Technicians (Level 3), Lifting Technicians, Plant Operators and Hire Controllers. These categories reflect the key occupations in the plant industry, and correspond with apprenticeships that are available, including new ‘Trailblazer’ apprenticeships in England. prevent the skip being raised when the dumper is sitting on dangerously uneven ground. A visual gauge sits above the main console, with a series of lights running from green, through amber to red. As the skip is raised or tipped, the system senses if the machine is leaning to the side or forwards or backwards, causing a potentially unstable situation. If the lights reach the amber stage, an audible warning is given to notify the operator, to either lower the skip, or move the machine to more stable ground conditions. In the event that the machine is tipped over, the system will stop the engine to prevent internal damage and prevent re-starting for a set duration. Where the optional JCB LiveLink telematics system is installed, it will also send a notification to the fleet manager that the machine has been tipped over. The Smart Safety pack also includes the option for the dealer to reduce the machine’s maximum travel speed, which is particularly useful for less experienced operators.

THE DUMPER COMES WITH THE OPTION FOR JCB LIVELINK TELEMATICS

Customers can order the machine with a wider track for additional stability. This uses an increase in wheel offset to raise the width of the machine from 850mm to 988mm, still allowing access through a standard 1m doorway. The increased track boosts machine stability by 16%, further increasing safety on rougher site conditions. With the addition of the Stage V engine and this wide range of operator and site safety systems, the JCB 1T-2 remains the safest, most productive, 1.0-tonne compact site dumper for plant hire customers.

Two new volvo machines for Macaulay Askernish Ltd MACAULAY

Askernish Ltd, a privately owned civil engineering contractor headquartered on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, has taken delivery of two new Volvo EC140E excavators for a dedicated 21 kilometre utilities contract on Stornoway. The new arrivals follow hot on the heels of a larger EC200E ordered by the company in the summer – it being the first of its kind to arrive in Scotland. “We’ve been operating Volvo excavators since 2012 and have found them to be very reliable and productive machines. They are well built and robust, which are essential characteristics for working in this part of the world.” comments Operations Manager Callum McDowel. “Additionally, we have developed a strong relationship with Volvo and SMT GB, who understand our requirements. They look after us very well from an aftersales perspective, so these are positive reasons for sticking with the Volvo brand.” he continues.

All three machines are currently working on Stornoway. The EC200E is currently working on various civil engineering projects, whilst the two new EC140Es have been deployed on a dedicated 21 kilometre utilities contract, which will take two years to complete. “Both sizes of machine fit in well with the typical contracts we undertake.” says Callum. “In particular, the larger EC200E has plenty of capacity for general site clearance and muck shifting duties.” Both machines are powered by a Volvo Stage V compliant 4 cylinder engine, developing 122 and 156 nett hp for the EC140 and EC200 respectively. All of the machines are also fitted with an ‘Integrated work mode control’, which significantly reduces fuel consumption. This system provides high efficiency, rapid dig cycles by ensuring the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed, under varying load conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which

makes for faster work cycles. Hose rupture valves are also fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders, as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service. Founded in South Uist in 1949, MacAulay Askernish Ltd is a privately owned family-run Civil Engineering Contractor operating throughout the Western Isles and Highlands. Vac-EX compact vacuum excavator THE

AIR-VAC is a unique innovative compact vacuum excavator. VAC-EX has drawn on its years of experience with the larger vacuum excavators to provide the industry with the first ever machine that solves the problem of safe digging, in restricted access areas. Making this safe digging technique available to more companies and operatives. Despite the compact nature, the innovative turbine and filtration design ensure there is still a high level of vacuum. The AIR-VAC complete with trailer weighs 2300kg, light enough to be towed to the work area behind an industry standard transit van or pick up. Where it can be quickly removed from its trailer. The tracks and remote control, with five speed options allow it to be safely moved to the dig area. The AIR-VAC can be tracked through the tightest of locations. Once at the dig site the ground is agitated

with compressed air through the VAC-EX, AIR-EX air lance, from a vehicle mounted compressor. The loosened ground can now be safely vacuumed into the AIRVAC, where the debris is stored in the 0.2m cubed integrated skip. Both the air lance and dig pipe are manufactured from HDPE Plastic which will insulate the user if they are to contact a live unground cable. This has been tested and certified to 75,000 volts. Once the skip is full the AIR-VAC can be tracked to a convenient tipping point where using the remote control, the skip can be raised to allow the debris to be tipped into a dumpy bag, machine bucket or a low trailer. The AIR-VAC can now continue with the excavation, if required. The design of the filtration system allows the removal of water or sludge from the excavation and a drain valve on the skip door means water can be drained away during the digging process, without tipping the skip. This improves the way repair and maintenance works are conducted. All operations of the AIRVAC can be done from the hand-held remote control, so operators can be at

a safe distance while the AIR-VAC is moving. The addition of a flashing beacon and white noise alarm warns anyone in the area that the unit is mobile. The hydrostatic track drive ensures that when the remote control is released or dropped the AIR-VAC will stop instantly. The hydraulic power take-off allows hydraulic power to be used for a breaker or saw to cut away a hard surface prior to digging. Everything is powered from a 3 cylinder 18.5KW Tier 5 diesel engine keeping emissions and fuel consumption to a minimum. The five-inch dig tube is easily manipulated around congested services to clear the ground allowing access for repair operations. This pipe can be reduced in size for more precise digging and for the removal of less ground, to reduce impact on the ground and reinstatement costs. When the work is complete the AIR-VAC is tracked back on to the trailer, secured at the front with a single pin and at the rear with two ratchets straps. It is now ready to be towed to the next job.

Electronic Drive Levers Most heavy Ammann compactors utilise advanced drive control, which enables smooth starts and stops during machine operation. On some heavier Ammann asphalt compactors, an electronic drive lever provides smooth transitions that prevent damage to the freshly placed mat.

Low Hand-Arm Vibration Hand-arm vibration levels on some Ammann Vibratory Plate Compactors are the lowest in the industry – less than 2.5 m/sec2. Topical commentary • why vacuum? Other very important factors linked to vacuum excavation are higher worker safety and far fewer liability issues, so there are many benefits to be derived. Some of the most common applications for suction excavation include exposing pipes and cables without causing damage and localisation of cables and pipes; suction of foundations for restoration or renovations; ballast removal on rail lines; excavation for building underpinning; suction around tree roots for cable and pipeline maintenance and test slots prior to groundworks.

Vacuum excavation can increase workers' safety And then there is in one big factor to consider with traditional excavation – the potential cost in accidental damage to underground utilities such as power and fibre optic cables, not to mention the penalties attached to such actions. Vacuum/suction excavation reduces such risks.

The excavated material is contained in the suction excavator rather than deposited. This is then taken away to be disposed of, rather than dumped on the side of the trench which can be a great benefit when excavating in confined spaces.

How does a Vacuum Excavator Work? A vacuum/suction excavator generates high volume air flow via its suction fans which are powered by (in most cases) a diesel engine. This air flow produces a suction that pulls material into the machine’s intake nozzle depositing it into a material storage container. The air then continues through a bank of micromesh filters that capture small particles and dust before being released back into the atmosphere. Suction/vacuum excavators come in all shapes and sizes. They can be truck mounted, rail mounted, track mounted and some are trailer mounted as shown in the images. The trailer mounted and narrow track mounted units are ideal for working in very confined areas. Suction excavation is without doubt, a growing market sector and one we will certainly see more of in 2020 and beyond.

It is reported that plant theft claims have risen steadily over the past 5 years. With an estimated £1 million worth of Plant thieved every week, an important question arises: Which type of security method is best for you?

If you’re taking care of a large construction site, security officers might be the way to go. Officers with full personal protective equipment (PPE) can be an easy way to ensure your machinery is fully protected and guarded whilst you’re not on site. Companies such as the Beacon Group offer Contractor Health and Safety (CHAS) accredited services with Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) registered construction security officers. One level up from this, the Beacon Group also offers security and detection dog handler teams, for that added protection from drugs, explosives, tobacco and more.

To ensure your site is extra safe, its advised that machinery owners make use of steel shutters ad control inhibitors. Whilst not high-tech security equipment, these devices will delay access to your plant machinery in the event of an attempted theft. Another option is the use of virtual ring fences. In this scenario, plant equipment will be disabled when a thief attempts to move it out of the prescribed area. To enable the equipment to be moved outside of the designated area, remote asset management will be required.

Whichever security method you decide to employ with your plant machinery, it’s crucial to safeguard your plant when you’re not around. is a name that needs few introductions having this year celebrated trading for 40 years in the construction industry. The plant hire specialists provide self-drive and operated services to a variety of sectors, including highways and roads, rail, utilities and civil engineering. They are heavily involved in many infrastructure projects in the UK including HS2, and it is the latter that has been the catalyst for helping homeless people find employment.

The Lynch initiative to employ the homeless was really sparked by its director, Rob Lynch. He found himself increasingly sidestepping the homeless on numerous occasions around the new London and Birmingham Terminals for HS2. The situation struck a chord and Rob recalls thinking: “how can we carry on building shiny new railway stations and other infrastructure projects without also building the

path for the homeless to get back on track?” “Homelessness is a complex issue, but I think it is one right at the heart of the construction industry,” he explains. L Lynch is now taking its first steps →

The company knows it will not be easy, but they are certainly determined, saying they will “try, fail, learn and try again.” L Lynch are not doing this alone and we should also mention the other organisations and people involved in this project, especially Dara McCarthy of the West Midlands Combined Authority and Alan Swann of Morgan Sindall. The West Midlands Combined Authority is a combined authority for the West Midlands metropolitan county. It is a strategic authority with powers over transport, economic development and regeneration and was formed back in June 2016. For L Lynch, 2020 is a milestone as the company celebrates 40 years in business. It was started in 1980 by Liam Lynch with one excavator and has evolved into a nationally recognised company in the construction industry. They are very proud of how their progress has been achieved thanks to the dedication, passion and hard work of their employees over the years.

As a result of this scheme to get homeless people back on track, five people have now landed new jobs as plant operatives with L Lynch. They were trained by RMF Construction and housed in temporary accommodation, assisted by the homelessness charity, Crisis.

Matthew Green, Director of Crisis Skylight Centre in Birmingham said: “As a society, we must make sure people have the right tools to be able to end their homelessness and employment is an important part of this. Our Crisis Employment Services help people prepare for, find and sustain work.”

The training course took place at RMF’s Construction Academy in Hollywood, Birmingham, covering topics such as site safety and how to operate a range of machinery. The individuals are now working on major projects across the West Midlands including the new HS2 station site at Curzon Street Birmingham.

He went on to say: “We would like to thank Lynch for providing sustainable training and employment opportunities to our members that will allow them to become financially secure. This initiative shows what collaboration working can do for some of the most vulnerable people in society and how it can change lives for the better.

Andy Street, the Mayor of the West Midlands said: “The construction industry in the West Midlands will need 50,000 more trained staff by 2030, and so we must make sure local people have the skills to fill these jobs. I’d like to thank L Lynch for offering these fantastic opportunities to improve people’s lives and I hope many more employers will follow their example.” Akiel Treasure, one of the participants explained: “I found out about the training from Crisis and went for it. I’d like to stay with L Lynch, master the craft and maybe become a team leader.”

the end of September 2019, there were 32 million cars on the roads of Great Britain. This number makes up 82.2% of all traffic. The number of licenced vehicles has risen over the past year by 1.3 percent, making the total number of licenced vehicles using our roads around 38.9 million. Further, the UK has one of the highest rates of vehicle miles per mile of road per year, at a rate of 113 million. This rate is twice as high as Germany and three times that of France. With all this road usage, it’s no wonder that so many motorways are going through major upgrades. In the past 5 years £5 billion has been invested to deliver over 100 road improvement schemes across the UK. To the lay person, the term ‘smart motorway’ is a relatively new concept. In fact, it is only the term that is new. The first smart motorway in the UK, the M42 Junction 4-3a in the Midlands, was known until 2013 as a ‘managed motorway’. It was hoped that the use of the word ‘smart’ would promote the use of technology on roads. Herein lies the difference between a 'normal' motorway and a smart motorway: the use of technology. →

From road sensors to detect speed, to CCTV cameras monitoring incidents and overhead signs to communicate with road users, technology is aimed to manage incidents effectively. There are two main types of smart motorway:

Following a period of surveys and investigation, work started on upgrading the motorway in January 2019. The main bulk of the construction work involved in smart motorway construction occurs in the central reserve. To allow for this, existing lanes are narrowed and traffic management systems have been put in place. The central reserve will, in turn, be widened to allow access for works traffic. Work undertaken within the central reserve includes the installation of cables that will provide the motorway with CCTV, electronic information signs, and signals on gantries. Multi-discipline industry service provider and contractor M O’Brien are undertaking the full earthworks and drainage for the M27 junctions 4-11 smart motorway scheme. The project has required services from across the M O’Brien group including

Companies who frequently undertake this type of work will understand that one of the highest risk environments in construction and civil engineering is where people and plant work and interact within the same space - sometimes referred to as the people plant interface. The people plant interface can be fatal if navigated unsafely. Anyone working in this type of environment will have gone through extensive training to ensure safe interaction between people and machinery, as well as gaining awareness of wider safety concerns. However, even in the most safety conscious working environments, mistakes can be made. The industry as a whole, especially the plant machinery sector, is

looking increasingly into methods of minimising mistakes that can put the workforce at risk. Over the last few years, companies have been proposing and producing solutions in a range of forms. M O’Brien’s own solution to minimising mistakes in the people plant interface has already been trialled on the M27 Junctions 4-11 smart motorway scheme. Having noticed that those working during night works were more likely to unknowingly walk into an excavator’s exclusion zone, they approached illuminated safety manufacturer Fhoss. The result of the collaboration was an idea adapted from a previous rail application: a

solid ring of red light projected onto the ground around an excavator to clearly mark the machine’s exclusion zone. The light system has become so popular that Fhoss have released it as Fhoss Halo Exclusion. The light covers 360 degrees, is hardwired to the Plant Machinery, is Ip67 rated, and comes

The use of proximity warning systems has become increasingly commonplace on construction sites over the past decade. The people plant interface is just one area in which machinery solutions

The site safety system utilises excavator hazard mitigation and geolocation technology to aid the prevention of plant equipment striking pre-defined hazards. Using hand-held GPS rovers, site wide coordinates can be set and hazard pre-located across a site. From here, virtual barriers can be set to ensure that any PMX-enhanced excavator works within a defined area. The machine self-limits movement to ensure that it works within the defined safe area. Further, the technology supports site-wide control of multiple machines. The technology is ideal for use in excavators within the highways sector, providing consistent, site-wide safety limits without the

The system has been utilised and demonstrated on the central reservations of the M1 and M6 all lanes running smart motorway projects and has been nominated for a Highways England Blue Star Innovation Award. These are just a couple of innovations that help make the people plant interface and plant working in close proximity to the public a safer working environment. At the time of publication, the roll out of smart motorways has been halted amid safety concerns. However, the technology and plant machinery solutions implemented in these schemes will continue to improve the safety of various construction projects to come. Industry Insights: solutions for safer motorway construction

THE

roll out of ‘smart motorways’ in the UK has led to much innovation in construction plant, especially the introduction of new safety systems. With new concepts and new ways of working, we are seeing many fresh initiatives to make motorway construction safer for operators and motorists. One of these new concepts is the Wacker Neuson ‘Dual View’ dumper which sets new standards for the operator’s visibility in both directions of travel. The seat console and the control panel can be easily rotated so the operator is always facing the direction of travel. This makes it ideal when working on motorway widening contracts and for the construction of smart motorways.

Many contractors, such as Costain, now mandate guidance for all contracts that the Dual View is the first choice of dumper up to 9-tonne capacity. Before the introduction of Dual View, contractors such as Costain had a 6-tonne capacity dumper payload limit, so working efficiencies can also be gained. The construction of smart motorways has also led to the introduction of new temporary barrier systems. Most of us will remember the days when just plastic road cones separated the traffic on a motorway in roadworks with traffic travelling either side of the cones at 50 mph! The BG800 Portable Steel Barrier made by Highway Care along with other similar types are now used during the construction of many smart motorways and are designed to protect motorists and the construction workforce. Its unique stepped profile has proven to reduce damage to both vehicle and barrier during impact. In the event of impact, BG800 barriers provide an extremely shallow exit angle for the vehicle minimising the risk of secondary accidents. Plastic cones really are not ideal to separate traffic safely and with this in

mind, Highways England are now trialling the use of two 21 metres long crash-barrier trucks. They were originally designed for military use to protect against roadside bombs, but are now keeping road workers and motorists safe. In collaboration with Kier, the 16-tonne mobile barriers have been brought over from the USA and launched in the West Midlands. Having said all this, smart motorways are proving controversial. On 31st January, Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, announced the suspension of the opening of new smart motorways until a hard shoulder removal safety review is complete. Shapps told Parliament that stretches of smart motorway, including one on a 10km stretch of the M20, will not open before the safety review has been completed. At present it can take up to 17 minutes before a control room operator is alerted to a broken-down stationary vehicle. However, we understand that NAVTech Radar have a system that can alert within 10 seconds in all conditions, day and night. It is currently on trial on a section of the M25.

to many as one of the most important events in the tool and plant-hire calendar, the Executive Hire Show returned to the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, in February. The show, which took place over the 5th and 6th February, highlighted some of the key themes in the plant-hire sector. From efficiency to eco-friendly kit, here's what the show had to offer in 2020. The Executive Hire Show brings hirers and suppliers together under one roof in a two day trade only event. Originally open to hire executives throughout the UK and Ireland, the show has gained attention from many companies based in Europe and further overseas. This makes for a diverse range of equipment on show.

Industry heavy weights JCB exhibited their growing range of fully electric machinery, offering zero-emissions electrical back-up to construction projects. Following a fantastic year at the show in 2019, in which they launched the JCB 19C-1E electric excavator, JCB returned with the fast charge version of the machine. The fully electric 1.9 tonne digger, is equipped with a load-sensing hydraulic system and sophisticated battery management system ensuring full-shift availability. The fast charge option cuts the charge time from 8-12 hour charging to under two hours for a full charge. Besides this, JCB exhibited a host of equipment ideal for the rental sector. Each piece of equipment on the trail has been launched since the 2019 show and are commercially available. Among the 16 products, 10 that were deemed particularly outstanding were put forward for a slot on Innovation Trail - Live, allowing exhibitors to present their equipment to a live audience in a 10 minute slot at the show.

The company's bag-inbox fuelling system can store 20 litres of Gas Oil and reduces plastic consumption by 90%. Their AdBlue blue box has storage stability for up to 18 months and is commonly used in Euro 5 and Euro 6 off road vehicles. The box system allows for the storage of fuel for off road vehicles and allows users to remain conscious of their company's overall carbon footprint.

The mini dumpers feature a large skip capacity while being able to fit through a typical doorway, making them ideal for domestic and landscaping use. 2020 saw one of the most successful shows in the Executive Hire Show's 13 year history. With new equipment launched and celebration of the sector's ongoing efforts to innovate, it's no wonder that this event remains a must-go for many companies in the equipment and plant hire industries.

Despite - or perhaps because of this, exhibitors at LAMMA 2020 were keen to put forward the machinery to symbolise the bright future of farming.

The October 2019 record saw the Fastrac 2 hit a peak speed if 153.771mph and record an average speed of 135.191mph. This peak speed exceeded the June record by over 30mph.

The tractor displayed the abilities of Valtra’s unlimited studio, in which machinery can be fitted with accessories and equipment not directly available from the production line during the normal manufacturing process. Valtra’s multi-chrome machine represents one in five Valtra orders that go through the unlimited studio. Valtra also exhibited the new design for Valtra’s heads up display (HUD) SmartGlass. The McCormick X8 and X7 range of tractors puts emphasis on the use of Precision farming applications, GPS guidance, ISOBUS and data telematics. As a result of a global partnership with Topcon Agriculture, a factory-installed guidance-ready option is now available for 141-310hp McCormick X8 VTDrive, X7 VT-Drive and X7 P6-Drive tractors, as well as a suite of precision farming applications for different Topcon terminals.

In addition, the McCormick Fleet Management option for X8 and X7 series tractors provides fuel consumption and operating hour records, reminders for timely routine servicing, and data for pinpointing a tractor’s location and activity, plus geo-fencing for security monitoring. “These technologies are increasingly being used by farmers and contractors for improving productivity and accuracy in work, driving ease and cost-management,” points out Andy Starbuck, McCormick product specialist.

“Argo Tractors is progressively introducing these features further down the McCormick range to the 100-140hp bracket to bring their benefits to more tractor users.” Elsewhere, Continental Tyres launched their new agricultural tyre app. ‘Agriculture TyreTech’ is aimed to help farmers use tyres more efficiently. The app is able to cross reference the properties of any continental tyre with the load of the vehicle and recommend the best tyre pressure. Sales manager, Richard Hutchins explains: “The app will reduce soil compaction, reduce tyre wear, increase efficiency and lower fuel consumption.” He continued, “The new app offers farmers a way to further extend the life of their tyres by using the right tyre pressure to make their daily tasks more efficient.” LAMMA will return to the NEC from 1213th January 2021.

has been expected, especially over the past few years, that the 2020s will be the decade in which the construction industry will really feel the effects of an aging workforce. Attempts to attract young workers to the Industry have been ongoing for years. Industry events such as UK Construction Week, Plantworx and Hillhead, encourage young people to attend - with relatively positive results. However, for the Industry to attract young workers, emphasis must be placed on showing Construction as a viable career path to younger generations. At the CPA conference, held back in October 2019, members of the plant hire industry voiced the opinion that career options in plant machinery should be introduced at a younger age than is the norm in the UK. In

February 2020, Plant Construction Careers Live (PCCL) took place at Millennium Point in Birmingham, putting this practice into place within the West Midlands. The show was hosted by the West Midlands Combined Authority, in partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) and the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA). Taking place on the 4th February 2020, the event saw more than 1000 young people connected with multiple

employers, universities and specialist training providers within the construction industry. The event took place during National Apprenticeships Week, a week with great importance to the industry. The number of apprenticeships taken up in the construction industry has been on the rise for a few years now. When opening the event, Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street, touched on the need for ‘fresh talent’ in the industry: “The Construction Industry in this region is expected to create 50,000 new jobs over the next 10 years, offering fantastic careers for young people and adults.

“Through programmes like our Construction Gateway, we’re showing local people how to get the skills needed to gain a job in the plant sector on major projects including HS2, the Midland Metropolitan Hospital and the Commonwealth Games.” The success of the event lay in the range of technology available to visitors. To many outside of the industry, the stereotypical image of construction is one of muddy boots and bricklaying. Those outside the sector sometimes do not realise how much technology has been introduced to the construction industry, and how it has become integral to the plant operation sector. A sentiment supported by the statements of Cllr George Duggins,
