Service and Quality make Hitachi wheel loaders first choice for Recycling company
THE
UK-based Jack Moody Group has welcomed ten Hitachi wheel loaders to its fleet of construction equipment, and the new models are already active at its four recycling sites across the West Midlands. The machines were delivered by Hitachi Construction Machinery (UK) (HCMUK) to the Group’s subsidiary – JM Recycling. The line-up comprises four ZW2506s, four ZW180-6s, and two highlift ZW180-6s. The waste and recycling specification machines were also modified locally by HCMUK.
The complete package Having first experienced a Hitachi wheel loader in 2015, JM Recycling began a tender process to expand its existing

new contracts,” confirms Robert. “Yes, the Hitachi wheel loaders are incredibly reliable, but we enjoy a true partnership with HCMUK. The future is looking good and I expect Hitachi to remain part of our success story.”
“We wanted to work in partnership with a manufacturer that could support the product over a five-year period,” says Managing Director Robert Moody. “Hitachi put together an excellent package for us. Choosing them was not a price-led decision – it was about service, warranty and quality.
Simply the best
“We’re growing and have purchased two further Hitachi wheel loaders to help us fulfil
JM Recycling was set up in the mid-2000s in response to the growing need for environmentally friendly alternatives to landfill disposal. Alongside its central base of operations in Berkswell, near Coventry, JM Recycling also manages other sites at Wolverhampton, Grendon and Telford that collect waste from 1.5 million homes.
One of the ZW250-6 operators, Barry Alders, has been working for JM Recycling for seven years: “The ZW250 is great and I like to keep it in top condition! I’m operating the new machine and you can feel that it’s more powerful than the previous model. I particularly like the quick power button, because it means you can easily cut through the material. “Inside the cab you can see everything around you, and it’s spacious, comfortable and quiet. This is really important when working eight-hour days. I have to say that the Hitachi ticks all the boxes – I think it’s the best machine I’ve ever driven.”

Obart Pumps Helping in the Battle Against Climate Change OBART
Pumps has thrown its support behind Real Ice CIC, a North Wales-based startup that is aiming to help refreeze the Arctic. Real Ice is taking direct action on climate change by designing wind-powered machines to restore Arctic sea ice and help indigenous communities and wildlife at risk from global warming. Obart Pumps has supplied a free Tsurumi submersible pump and pump engineering expertise to assist Real Ice’s efforts. The pump forms a vital part of Real Ice’s re-icing machine, as the machine pumps water from under the ice to freeze into a new layer on top it. Global warming is happening faster in the Arctic than anywhere else in the world. It fragments communities, obstructs transport, impacts on livelihoods and affects wildlife such as polar bears, seals and walrus which rely on stable sea ice to hunt and breed. Real Ice’s re-icing machine is designed to reverse global warming, as increased ice cover reflects more solar radiation back into space. The machines are also intended to boost the economy of local indigenous communities as a business opportunity maintained and operated by local people. Cian Sherwin, Managing Director of Real Ice said: “We at Real Ice are
14 • October 2021 • Plant Planet
delighted to be using the Tsurumi pump to incorporate into our Real Ice re-icing machine prototype, and allow for our Community Interest Company to begin a crucial testing stage in the Arctic to prove how well our machine performs under the wintery conditions of the great northern regions of Canada. We wish to thank Obart and Tsurumi on behalf of all of us here at Real Ice and look forward to collaborating with them in the future.” The Obart pump is a vital part of the Real Ice re-icing machine. Positioned down a hole drilled right through the sea ice, it uses electricity generated from a renewable source to lift water from below onto the top of the sea ice. The naturally cold northern environment then freezes the water, making new ice that will replenish losses due to climate change. Pete McMutrie , Sales Director of Obart Pumps added: “ We are really excited to be supporting Real Ice in this fantastic project.
We quickly enlisted the help of the technical team at Tsurumi Europe who were delighted to provide the information and analysis for the pump that will be installed in the re-icing machine. Initiatives such as this should be applauded and supported with the aim of improving local communities and benefitting the environment in the future.” The Real Ice team is in the process of testing the prototype machine. Initial testing was carried out at Porth Y Wrach, Menai Bridge, on 25th and 26th September 2021.

Doosan ‘Transparent Bucket’ Wins Two Matexpo Awards THE
industry’s first wheel loader ‘Transparent Bucket’ system from Doosan Infracore Europe has won two of the major awards at the international Matexpo Exhibition held at the Kortrijk Xpo convention centre in Kortrijk in Belgium from 8-12 September 2021. The Doosan Transparent Bucket system won in both the ‘Innovation’ and ‘Safety’ categories, scooping two of the three awards organised by Matexpo and decided by an independent jury comprised of specialists from the sector, led by jury chairman, Danny Van Parys. A total of 51 applications were submitted for the awards this year: 22 for the Innovation Award, 12 for the Safety Award and 17 for the Green Award, the third category in this year’s Matexpo awards. Matexpo is a biennial international trade fair

showcasing machinery and equipment for the construction industry and the environment. It is the third largest trade fair of its type in Europe, with an established reputation and typically attracting more than 40,000 visitors to each edition of the show. The Doosan Transparent Bucket is a fully integrated system that allows a wheel loader operator to see the bucket blind spots on the machine through the in-cab monitor. The patented system records images at the front of the wheel loader with two cameras mounted on the top and bottom of the machine and displays the combined images in real time on the monitor in the cab using a curved projection method. Owing to blind spots caused by the buckets on wheel loaders, the area in front of the machines has been considered
an area of major concern in terms of safety. With the new Doosan transparent bucket function, however, the driver can easily check the blind spots in front of the bucket via the cab monitor, to increase safety and prevent accidents. Another advantage of the transparent bucket system is that it can significantly improve work efficiency by providing a forward-view perspective for the driver during loading/unloading or when carrying materials such as aggregates, sand and soil. Doosan Infracore is the first company in the world to develop and apply a front projection function with the transparent bucket for construction machines and has applied for patents in Korea, North America, Europe and China.

Tufftruk Helps to Drive Green Construction ONE of the more recent arrivals on the construction equipment scene is a firm with a lot of history in construction plant and tools. Owner Ron Blackhurst sold iconic orange mixer firm Belle Engineering back in 2008 and went on to start a new company Tufftruk Ltd with a greener line-up.
Tufftruk also embrace OEM manufacturing making the range in the blue and yellow colours for German Bergmann dumpers and turquoise for Multiquip in the USA.
Right from the start, having an eco-green outlook was seen as essential, so the company set out to build something for future generations. Back then battery power in plant was in its infancy with more focus on low emissions. Tufftruk seized the battery technology, worked closely with suppliers and designed the world leading TRUXTA range of battery powered mini dumpers and have successfully built the brand worldwide with a full order book going forward.
Tufftruk Ltd specialise in a range of smart and innovative small plant and tools
With Ron as owner and designer in chief and Managing Director Andrew Simpson leading the team, Tufftruk are now into their second purpose built modern factory, quickly outgrowing the original one. Export was seen as vital to kick the business off the ground. European countries are far more green-led and Tufftruk rightly focused on the export scene with a good team of international dealers.

Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity launches Help Inside the Hard Hat Campaign THE
Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity has recently launched their hard hitting and poignant ‘Help Inside the Hard Hat’ campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness of mental wellbeing issues in our industry and more importantly, how our workforce can reach out for help. This is a campaign to get construction talking and it addresses the perception that construction workers are often seen as being ‘hard’ on the outside; always ready with a quip and keeping up with the alpha male image. But research shows that simply isn’t the case and the charity deals first hand with the results of not addressing issues that are happening ‘inside the hard hat’. The vibrant posters and hoardings deliver four thought provoking quotes; “He was our big mouth - he’d always have an answer for everything, except for why he should still be here” “He was the last off site every day, then one night he left us way too early”
“He was such a polite lad; it didn’t make sense when he left without saying goodbye” “He was the joker. The one who made everyone on-site cry with laughter and then one morning, we just cried” All of the campaign resources are available to download free of charge from the charity’s website so that everyone can get involved with helping inside the hard hat. The campaign has already seen widespread coverage on social media with companies adding their logo to show their support. Many companies have already ‘gone large’ with their support and featured the campaign on site hoardings both inside and outside of construction sites to help raise awareness of the issues. Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity said, “We want to deliver a message of hope and reassure our construction community that ‘we’ve got their back’ and that we’re working tirelessly to ensure that no construction worker or their family is alone in a crisis. This isn’t an easy subject to tackle, but with two construction workers taking their life every single working day, we need to make sure that our workforce
knows about all of the resources we have available to ‘help inside the hard hat’. If workers don’t know we are here then we can’t help them. We need everyone to really get behind this campaign by downloading the posters, sharing them on social media and getting them up around sites, welfare areas and offices. This is all about removing the stigma of talking openly about emotional wellbeing and encouraging people to start a conversation. This one simple action could make all the difference to someone and could even save a life.” Bill Hill added: ”It is fantastic to see that many companies have already shared the campaign on site hoardings. Covid-19 has brought the mental health agenda to the fore and so the timing is right to share our important message with a wider audience and create a sense of community with the general public; the same public that uses the schools, hospitals, roads etc that our construction workforce work hard to deliver in often very difficult circumstances.” For more information and to download free resources visit www. lighthouseclub.org

If we are to meet the ambitious environmental plans set by the government, more plant machinery will need to employ such technologies. The digital epoch is upon us, and the construction industry has to embrace new and innovative ways of tackling unnecessary emissions on site. Telematics growth in action Telematics provider Topcon has recently announced the expansion of its Topnet Live GNSS network to meet
increased digitalisation demands. The Topnet network is used in a range of industries using plant machinery, including construction, surveying, machine control, and agriculture. The network means workers can make exact plans as to when and how their machinery needs to be used, meaning they are likely to complete their tasks more quickly. “The Topnet Live RTK network, first established over a decade ago, continues to grow with 5,100
reference stations globally, a 14% increase in the last year,” said Ian Stilgoe, Vice President of Topcon. “We are growing throughout the world in areas where there is an increasing demand for productivity and accuracy through digitalization, with strong growth particularly in North America and Europe. between 2021-2025. In order to hit environmental targets, when purchasing new plant machinery, the construction sector must consider whether they are making sustainable decisions in the long-term. Although the popularity of electric machinery is on the rise, for many construction sites, it is not yet viable to have an all-electric fleet due to a lack of infrastructural grid support. Telematics can help bridge this gap by allowing the operators to utilise their machinery in the least wasteful way, consuming less fuel, water, and other materials. The more we know about our plant machinery, the better we can use it in an efficient way, which saves the company money and reduces the impact on the environment.

Machinery security: How technology protects your construction equipment Freya Harris explores the use of technology, including Datatag’s CESAR Scheme, in the nationwide effort to protect construction plant and equipment.
THE
security of expensive, heavy machinery is an ongoing battle in the construction and agriculture industries. Every year, stolen and vandalised assets cost the UK construction industry over £800 million. The introduction of new technology within the industry is working to reduce this cost. Thieving used to predominantly
be on a smash and go basis, which meant only one or two machines or items were taken at a time. However, with a rise in organised crime, whole sites can now be raided for vehicles and expensive property, and all get taken at once, with not a great deal of evidence left behind. Thieves will go to great lengths to pose as site workers, creating fake email addresses and making false number plates to disguise vehicles, all with the intention of stealing expensive equipment and machinery.
This has led to advancements in security measures to reduce crime rates and ultimately save the industry time and money. Technology has played an important part in reducing crime rates. New systems can relay detailed information about the location and performance of heavy machinery and construction equipment to 24/7 contact centres and online databases. This means that when machinery is moved at unusual times or moved off sites when it shouldn’t, the →

Every item or vehicle will have a Unique Plant Identification Plate that is tamper-proof and allows the property to be tracked. Once you register the machine, it cannot be changed unless done securely through CESAR’s database, meaning thieves are unable alter the ownership. This visible marking can act as a deterrent to criminals as they know it will be practically impossible to get away with the theft. Approved suppliers place hundreds of small CESAR Datadots all over tools and machines. They can be applied to any surface and are so small that it would be virtually impossible for thieves to find and remove them all. The Datadots also carry a unique

Celebrating two new cesar champions
PC Daniel Hanworth & PC Peter Mather were awarded with the Cesar champion badge The CESAR scheme rewards police officers and officials when they find missing machinery using the scanners and Datatags. Back in July, PC Daniel Hanworth and PC Peter Mather from Lancashire Constabulary were awarded the CESAR champion badge. The two officers were members of a task force which recovered a stolen telehandler worth £40,000 by using the CESAR scheme. Crimes linked to the theft of machinery and equipment tend to spike during the winter months due to the evenings and nights being darker. This makes it more important to protect your machinery now, rather than waiting until an incident occurs. A low, one-off cost could save you thousands of pounds in the future.

GGR Group: ongoing commitment to innovation
Plant Planet hears how GGR Group have embraced new technology to become leaders in sustainable lifting solutions.
WHEN
GGR Group launched the UK’s first fully electric telehandler in early 2020, it was the latest technological advancement from a business that has consistently pushed boundaries since its establishment in 1995. Founded by brother and sister team Graeme and Gill Riley, what began life as one piece of equipment is now Europe’s
foremost supplier of complete lifting solutions, with GGR Group boasting the largest fleet of lifting equipment for sale or hire. GGR Glass is the UK’s largest glass handling website. A highly successful business that employs more than 150 people nationwide, GGR Group has supplied solutions to some of the country’s highest profile construction projects, including The Shard, Crossrail and HS2 to name but a few. In the UK, the company operates from
three sites, its headquarters in Manchester, state of the art facility at Thame (near Oxford) and Glasgow, as well as having products available from more than 30 specialist dealers across Europe, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. But perhaps most remarkable of all is that this growth has been engendered without ever compromising on GGR’s familyrun ethos – Gill and Graeme are still at the helm, nearly →

The GGR story is one of determination, resilience and, above all, an ongoing commitment to innovation. It is not surprising, therefore, that the business is now breaking new ground in the field of sustainable lifting solutions. Nowhere is this better evidenced than with GGR’s fully electric telehandler. The first of its kind to market in this country, the telehandler is an innovative and environmentally-friendly machine that is powered by the very latest in lithium-ion battery technology. GGR’s launch of a fully electric telehandler provides the construction industry with a viable and sustainable alternative, without sacrificing strength or durability.
supply chain, few businesses are better placed than GGR to help lead positive change and provide businesses with the insights needed to adopt more sustainable solutions. Indeed, for more than a decade now GGR has been investing in its green range of plant equipment, with more than 60% of its product offering available as zero emissions or battery powered. GGR ensures its own transport fleet complies with EURO 6 or latest versions of emmisions reduced regulations. GGR has also invested in its own fuel stations to save trucks going to fuel stations. In 2014, GGR Group not only became the first company to bring battery powered minicranes to market (more than 100 units sold to date), but has also adapted this solution to utilise wheels rather than tracks to reduce power consumption and potential marking to sensitive surfaces. This solution is particularly popular in clean room factories and has been utilised by the likes of BMW, Ford and Mercedes.
More than 60% of GGR’s products are available as zero emmisions or battery powered. The launch of the all-electric telehandler is the latest in a series of sustainable innovations from GGR, and came at a crucial time for UK construction. Responsible for 38% of C02 emissions nationally, the sector has long considered how to bolster its sustainability credentials without sacrificing productivity. Enjoying a unique position at the heart of the British construction

The GGR Group has since implemented further sustainability changes with the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in place of mineral diesel in all its machines; a change which has led to the reduction of GGR’s own carbon emissions by up to 90%.
But what are GGR’s longer term plans for sustainable development? At its 2021 open day, members of the GGR team set out their stall for an ambitious, far-reaching approach to sustainable solutions. These include the shift towards an all-green fleet of lifting solutions that are powered by sustainable fuel sources, unlocking additional opportunities for construction managers nationwide to make the switch to HVO-fuelled machinery. As a business that has long been at the forefront of embracing and implementing leadingedge solutions, GGR remains committed to diversifying its green product range and working with the wider construction sector to lead the charge for change when it comes to sustainable products. However, this focus on leadingedge solutions isn’t just applied to GGR’s product offering, but also to its customer service. For example, GGR recently launched a ground-breaking immersive virtual showroom (#VIRTUALGGR), helping customers to conduct a virtual product demonstration, as well as selecting and purchasing lifting equipment, all without the need to travel, making it even easier to do business with the group. The focus on sustainability isn’t just centred on GGR Group’s fleet of solutions, it also applies to the organisation itself and its employees. With bases in Manchester, Glasgow and the South East, GGR has also endeavoured to embed itself within the communities in which it operates; from fundraising drives to volunteering work, GGR’s approach to charity work goes far beyond simply signing a cheque. When the business celebrated it’s 20th year of operation in 2015, the team embarked on an ambitious philanthropic programme to raise muchneeded funds for 20 charities, including Age UK, Racing for MND, Macmillan and Help For Heroes. 2015 was also a special year for founder Gill Riley, who was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. The accolade was presented to Gill in recognition of her service to the construction industry and her status as a role-model to the growing number of young women opting for a career in the sector. In addition, one of GGR’s apprentices recently won the Construction Planthire Association (CPA) Stars of the Future Awards 2021 as the National Plant Technician of the Year. As the business gears up for its fourth decade of operation, the future seems bright indeed for GGR. The construction landscape may have changed immeasurably since those early days in Oldham, but GGR remains as committed as ever to embracing innovation and working shoulder to shoulder with the sector as it takes on the challenges of tomorrow.

GGR Delivers for major new london infrastructure project
GGR Group, the UK’s leading provider of lifting solutions, has provided critical support to London’s Thames Tideway project, the most comprehensive upgrade work ever undertaken by the UK water industry, resulting in significantly enhanced cost and time efficiencies. 56 • October 2021 • Plant Planet
The development, which is being spearheaded by Tideway, comprises significant improvements to London’s sewer network, which has remained largely untouched since it was first designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette in the 19th Century. Initially designed for a city of 4 million, the explosion in London’s population (now more than 9 million) has resulted in the system being frequently overloaded, discharging millions of tonnes of raw sewage into the Thames. To ease the burden on the network, Thames Centrals
Contractors are overseeing the construction of a 25km long tunnel that will intercept any overspills and transport the sewage directly to a treatment facility in Beckton. Due to the sheer scale and complexity of the work, the project has been divided into three segments – Tideway West, Tideway Central and Tideway East – each of which are being delivered by a joint venture of different contractors. Work for the Tideway Central portion of the project is being overseen by a team of experts from Ferrovial

Cover Story • GGR Group Construction UK and Laing O’Rourke, who need highly reliable access to a complex working environment. Historically in projects such as Tideway, which comprise a significant amount of subterranean work, stair towers are used to grant access to the shaft. However, in Tideway’s instance, these were quickly dismissed as too large and inefficient, with the depth of the project meaning traversing the shaft would have had added a significant amount of time to each working day. Looking to identify a solution and operator that could safely deliver people in and out of the shaft, without compromising the operational capabilities of the main crane, David Kay, Construction Manager FLO JV for Tideway Central, soon turned to GGR Group. David explains: “The Tideway development is a project unrivalled in its scope and scale and one we are delighted to be working on. However, access to the main shaft required a significant amount of thought to ensure contractors could be delivered safely and in a timeefficient manner. “After careful consideration from our technical team, we realised that there was no better choice than GGR’s MCC1004 mini-crawler crane.” Compact and user-friendly,

the MCC1004 delivers a mighty lifting power of up to 10 tonnes, with an associated lifting height of up to 25.1m (26.2m with fly jib). With a 2800mm wide bass, the solid tracks of the MC1004 makes it the perfect solution for travelling over uneven and rough terrain – such as can be found at the Tideway Central development. David continues: “The MCC1004 has had a demonstrable, positive impact on the works at Tideway Central. To ensure the solution was implemented as quickly and effectively as possible, GGR provided us with a contract lift solution, meaning they supply their own kit and specially trained operators to help fulfil the job, meaning we don’t have to shell out on our own equipment and train an operator up. Ultimately this approach has enabled us to make significant time and cost savings. “Using the crawler crane, we have been able to supply a safe, yet efficient, means of granting access to the shaft, significantly reducing journey time by as much as 20 minutes per contractor. Alongside the MC1004, GGR also supplied its LIBRO 800 counterbalancer, which has enabled us to store our shutters on site rather than arranging delivery of them every time they are needed. Again, this has really
helped shore-up efficiencies on site and allowed us to make savings in both cost and carbon emissions by reducing deliveries to site. “All in all, GGR have been a fantastic supplier to work with. Their solutions have been on site for just over a year, with an estimated 12 months still to go. In that time, their friendly, honest and open service has really made the difference. GGR’s ongoing support for crossrail GGR Group has furthered its longstanding association with London’s Crossrail project by supplying its expertise to the construction of a brand new station at Canary Wharf. Sitting below a five storey mixed use development known as Crossrail Place, the Canary Wharf station will play a vital role in connecting the financial district in the City of London with the West End and Heathrow Airport. Surrounded by the waters of the West India Quay dock, the new Canary Wharf station comprises a 250-metre long station box, set 18 metres below water level – a factor that presented contractors on site with a significant logistical and technical challenge. The construction of the new station has been partially spearheaded by the Lakesmere group, the UK’s biggest building envelope specialist. As part of their involvement, the Lakesmere team were contracted to install a 1.3 tonne ‘performance hood’ louvre ventilation unit underneath a cantilever soffit of the East and West elevations of the station. This was a particularly complex brief, with the louvre units needing to be installed in two halves at a 54-degree angle, as well as underneath a deep

overhang, due to the intricate design of the new station. The unique format of this built meant installation via a traditional tower crane would have been impossible and, having ruled out the use of scaffolding due to cost and time constraints, Lakesmere realised a more versatile solution was necessary. It was this impetus that led them to contact GGR Group. Indeed, GGR has a long standing association with Crossrail, with more than a decade’s worth of experience in supplying innovation to sites throughout the project. Starting with the build of the Crossrail Tunnelling Academy in 2011, GGR has gone on to supply its sector-leading solutions to 28 pivotal junctures of the Crossrail line, from iconic stations including Bond Street, Paddington and Bilingsate Market, to major upgrades at some of the capital’s busiest hubs including Farringdon and Royal Victoria*. Drawing on this rich volume of experience, GGR was able to suggest a bespoke solution designed to meet the exact needs of the Canary Wharf station project. The answer was found in GGR’s UNIC mini-crane. Lightweight and flexible, the UNIC mini-crane is the ideal solution for jobs where space and manoeuvrability are limited,
which was precisely the case around the Canary Wharf Deck. Lakesmere group explains: “Crossrail is one of the most significant and complex infrastructure projects ever undertaken in London; a vital link from west to east of the city, comprising 41 stations from Abbey Wood and Shenfield in the east to Heathrow Airport and Reading in the west. “Our involvement with the Canary Wharf leg of the project is both incredibly exciting and multi-faceted. That’s why GGR’s partnership-led approach to helping us identify the right lifting solutions for this job has been so important to us. “GGR has a long and respected history with the Crossrail project; experience the business used to great effect when specifying products for Canary Wharf. The UNIC mini-crane was a real gamechanger on site. Using them in place of scaffolding, we were able to significantly shorten installation time and reduce installation costs by up to 10 times the initial estimate. But with GGR, it goes beyond product. Their whole team’s deep knowledge of the Crossrail project was invaluable and demonstrates an intricate understanding of what is a uniquely complex development.”

Operator safety has been enhanced with new rear side glasses that provide greater visibility and are less expensive to replace. Additional safety features include a 3db incab noise reduction to 74db, compared to the previous model, and relocating the horn switch onto the left gear shifter on Power Shift units for easier and quicker accessibility in case of emergency. Safety and comfort have clearly been a focus of the SV series’ design team. Finally, operators’ comfort and needs have been further accommodated by including 2 USB ports, a 12v port on the instrument cluster, a mobile phone holder, latest Bluetooth technology, and an industry leading storage capacity that is 4 times greater than the previous series. It includes 2 lockable compartments, 2 bottle holders,

Plantforce digital manager, Dale Hawkins said, “We are particularly proud that we were the first plant hire company in the UK to use the Leica fitted semi-automatic excavator. At Plantforce we pride ourselves as being innovators in our field, providing the very latest machine technology to our customers, including tier one contractors on key infrastructure projects. We have preferred partners who we choose to work with and Xwatch falls into this category – the synergy between our two organisations works very well. This combined with a reliable, easy-to-use system and an excellent after-sales service is why we have the confidence in Xwatch products to enhance our commitment to safety.”

inspector nasset: “It’s all about providing the best service that we can” Hannah Bounford sits down with Scarlett Moody, Co-Director of Inspector Nasset, to catch up on how the company has grown since 2019.
WHEN
Plant Planet were last in conversation with Inspector Nasset in October 2019, co-director Louis Moody expressed excitement for the future of the company. At the time, Inspector Nasset was a relatively new company, having operated for about a year. Two years later, and despite Covid, twin sister and fellow co-director Scarlett expresses the same enthusiasm at how far the company has come.

With parents who have a background in the Asset Finance industry, Scarlett and Louis have taken the reins of Inspector Nasset to grow a business that started from a simple conversation. “It came out of nowhere, really,” says Scarlett. “The idea way something that was thrown about — can we do something for people that need asset inspections? Through our parents, we had an insight into the market. We had been chatting to businesses about the solutions they needed, and we found that essentially, finance companies want to be able to protect themselves.”
While the main operation is based on the South Coast of England, Inspector Nasset operates across England, Scotland, and Wales. Since 2019, the company has grown their team of inspectors from thirteen to twenty. In addition, the type of work being undertaken by Inspector Nasset has evolved. “We have a lot more inspectors now, we’re doing sub-hire audits and more equipment valuations,” reflects Scarlett. “We work closely with finance companies in that area. We definitely have grown since 2019, we’ve got more inspectors working for us and

For those, we can do most of them the same day. Just recently, one came in at 1pm and we had an inspector on site by 3pm.” Efficiency and quality are at the heart of the company’s operation, and this extends to the inspections themselves. “We have our own portal where we can see when an inspector is doing the job, and when exactly the equipment inspection has been completed,” Scarlett elaborates. “It’s a specially designed app for our inspectors, which allows them to provide
impartial photographic evidence. Instead of our inspectors having to take down all the information to write up a report and send that over, which can take a while, it’s done straight away. As soon as that job is done, the finance companies can log into the portal and see the information immediately.”

“as soon as a job is done, the finance company can log into the portal and see the information immediately”
“It’s a very clean way of doing it. It’s easy for our inspectors to use and very clear, they can see what the job is before they get on site,” Scarlett further describes. “It also means that when a job is being done, I can not only see what the inspectors are doing in real time, but also when the inspector calls to say a job has been done, the finance companies can access that report straight away. More people are realising that it’s a good idea to have someone constantly checking on the equipment, because they hadn’t been able to check on it for nearly a year. Manage your fleet to protect your assets • Topical Commentary
manage your fleet to protect your assets Kate Hutchison explores how the use of telematics can lower maintenance costs and save money on machinery insurance.
AS
many of us in the industry already know, our machinery is extremely important to us and plays a key role in getting our jobs done. Undoubtedly, we endeavour to keep our machinery and equipment in top condition. However, it’s impossible to predict when something might go wrong. Damage or loss of plant machinery and tools can disrupt your business. Accidents and breakdowns can occur which cause irreparable damage, as well as other incidents such as theft. Having equipment stolen or damaged can be devastating for business
owners, and while you can minimise the risk of thefts taking place, you cannot stop these incidents altogether. Purchasing machinery insurance can ensure some peace of mind to plant owners and to those who hire machinery, knowing that their equipment is protected should an incident arise. Whether you hire or own your own plant machinery, it is always paramount to have machinery insurance. Plant machinery is notoriously expensive, and contractors equipment insurance covers damage to owned or leased machinery like excavators,
diggers, forklifts, dumpers, mixers, rollers, and more. Telematics have grown increasingly popular within the construction industry. Some construction equipment manufacturers have been using telematics technology on their machines for years; many are now beginning to see the value in them, as these systems are becoming increasingly popular within the industry. For over a decade, telematics have been installed in construction vehicles. Now, big players in the industry, such as Caterpillar, Volvo and John Deere machines are all rolling off the factory line equipped with telematics technology that is connected to fleet management software

JCB Livelink is now standard on all the company’s heavy and midrange machines
Telematics can be defined as the use of wireless technology which transmits information — using such technology can be used to reduce insurance costs. Telematic software is now able to track running time on machinery and proactively alert equipment managers and operators when there is an upcoming issue. Telematic systems can also offer tracking systems for stolen machines, which are also useful in transmitting data that may stop accidents and damage occurring with your machinery.
through the telematics system, allowing you to correct the issue and potentially prevent any further machinery accidents that will cost you and your insurance.
Telematics software is now able alert equipment managers & operators when there is an upcoming issue
JCB’s LiveLink telematic fleet management system is now standard on all the company’s heavy and mid-range machines. For equipment that hasn’t been fitted with Livelink, JCB offer LiveLink Lite, an aftermarket telematics solution for a machine, vehicle, or anything with an engine. It can be used all types of machinery — not just JCB machines. LiveLink Lite sends service alerts and records machine running hours to ensure machine maximum uptime. Telematics data can display real time feedback to machinery operators and just like the JCB LiveLink, provides technical alerts and early warnings for improper machinery use. If your machinery operator has poor driving habits and is driving unsafely, you will be alerted
Telematics also allow you to be notified in the case of poor daily machinery maintenance and provide detailed machine history, enabling you to plan and correct any potential problems. Alongside telematics being a popular fitting on larger plant machinery vehicles, there is a rise of telematics being installed on smaller plant vehicles, as well as those at the top of the size range. While telematics on smaller machinery may send back less information than telematics on larger machinery, customers are still seeing the value in the technology and how small preventative measures, such as mapping of an individual vehicle, running times, and monitoring of machinery can be used to determine preventative maintenance and save large costs for the business and their insurance.

Veolia innovation increases composting recovery by 30,000 tonnes per year Following successful large-scale trials, Veolia has demonstrated a new way of treating the 25% of green waste that ends up being sent for disposal or re-composting. This transforms the material into a clean wood product such as PAS100 approved mulch for gardening and landscaping, or a renewable biomass fuel for electricity and heating which replaces virgin alternatives such as woodchip and bark.

T
The return of LetsRecycle Live saw over 150 exhibitors return to the NEAC in Stoneleigh for an actionpacked two days of waste management solutions, live action demonstrations and in person networking. Taking place over from 15th-16th September 2021, the event brought together individuals from across the recycling, waste, and demolition industries for the first time since 2019. A key theme for this year was electrification. With many companies looking to meet zero emissions standards in the near future, much of the machinery

friendly solutions. Among those showcasing electric machinery ranges were JCB, who brought their 35-22E electric Teletruk. Launched in 2019, the 35-22E is no stranger to the exhibition circuit. The Teletruk has a maximum lifting capacity of 3,500kg and a maximum lift height of 4 meters, while the electric engine allows for zero emissions at point of use. The theme of electrification continued throughout the event. The bustling outside area saw two key live events take place: Trucks in Action and Live Material Processing. Sponsored by RVS, Trucks in Action saw a parade of vehicles exhibited over thirty minutes, from street sweepers to refuse collection vehicles. The live event provided exhibitors with an excellent opportunity to see a range of trucks for a variety of purposes up close and in action. Meanwhile, the Live Material Processing Demonstration brought a collection of machinery from different manufacturers together for another thirty-minute display. Alongside Liebherr’s LH24 Material Handler, the EW200E Materials Handler from Volvo and ATLAS 180MH Material Handler from TDL equipment loaded materials into a range of shredders, including the EDGE VS420 Slow Speed Shredder, Kaizen Recycling’s Forus SE250 shredder and the Pronar MRW 2.1010 Slow Speed Shredder from Global Recycling. covering important topics within the recycling, waste, and demolition industries. From “The Sustainable Standard in Demolition” to “Women in Resources and Sustainability”, these seminars provided a platform for key industry knowledge sharing. LetsRecycle Live will return in 2022 with a few changes. The show will take place from 14th-15th September at the NEC in Birmingham where it will be co-located with the RWM Exhibition.
