onductor, maestro, genio, esposo, padre, sobreviviente y luchador. Tratar de describir al Sr. Gustavo Dudamel no es por cierto tarea fácil con tal amplio e inspirador repertorio detrás de su carismática personalidad. Comanda tanto la Orquesta Filarmónica de Los Ángeles como la Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar de Venezuela con un profesionalismo impecable. Pero lejos se mantiene de clásicas formalidades, recibiendo trato de estrella de rock por revolucionar la forma en la que la música clásica es percibida en el mundo. Y lo hace con una inmensa sensibilidad.
Una especie de magia Gustavo Dudamel nació en 1981 en Barquisimeto, Venezuela, y se define como un producto de “El Sistema”, un programa social de música para la juventud. Habiendo nacido en un hogar con un padre trombonetista y una madre profesora de canto, el Sr. Dudamel siempre ha estado rodeado de música clásica desde temprana edad. Fue un niño prodigio. A los dieciocho años ya conducía la Orquesta Juvenil Simón Bolívar. Naturalmente. A los doce años estaba comenzando a conducir. Y al cumplir veintitrés años ya había ganado la Competencia "Gustav Mahler", la más prestigiosa competencia de directores de orquesta en el mundo. Ser un conductor tan joven produjo un shock dentro de la música clásica, y aunque su potencial fue inicialmente criticado o negado, otros no han podido describirlo mejor que como un “animal musical”. La pasión, la energía, la exuberancia y la gratificación que expresa al conducir, es imposible de resistir si es que uno tiene alma. Gustavo Dudamel es un poderoso puente entre músicos y compositores. La pasión que siente y expresa inunda a la audencia con una increíble y

onductor, maestro, genius, husband, father, survivor and fighter. Trying to describe Mr. Gustavo Dudamel is certainly no easy task, as he offers such an ample and inspiring repertoire through his rapturous personality. He commands both Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela with impeccable professionalism. But away he stays from classic formalities as he is given rock star treatment for renovating the way classical music is perceived throughout the world. And he achieves it with great sensibility.
A Kind of Magic Gustavo Dudamel was born in Barquisimeto in Venezuela in 1981 and defines himself as a total product of El Sistema (“The System”), Venezuela’s social music program for youth. Having a trombone-player as a father and a vocal-coach as a mother, Mr. Dudamel was surrounded by classical music from the tender age of four. He was also a prodigal child, so when he was eighteen he was already conducting the Simón Bolívar Orchestra. Naturally. At the age of twelve he was already starting to conduct. So, when he was twenty-one years old, he had already won the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition, the world’s most prestigious conducting competition. Being a young conductor came as a shock to the classical music community, and though his potential was criticized or denied by many, others had no better words to describe him but as a “musical animal”. The passion, the energy, the exuberance and the joy he expresses when he conducts is virtually impossible to resist if one has a soul, for Gustavo Dudamel is a powerful bridge between composers and musicians. The passion he feels and expresses can flood an

disfrutable sensación que permite experimentar las más grandes composiciones. Con movimientos de bailarín profesional, pinta esos mundos con su conducción a través de un mágico proceso. Su objetivo ha sido logrado. La audiencia siente exaltación. Al igual que la Filarmónica de Los Ángeles cuando en un riesgoso acto contrató al joven como su director musical. El Sr. Dudamel explica con una siempre alegre sonrisa: “Cuando conduzco me gusta dar cada parte de mi energía. Es la forma en que mi alma y mi cuerpo expresan lo que intento interpretar de la música”. Su magia la logra simplemente con un truco muy sencillo: motiva a la orquesta a tocar, no para que exprese una nota musical, sino una emoción. Los músicos tocan como actores de método de alguna forma y la emocionalidad pronto comienza a fluir de los instrumentos. Su don depende en gran medida de su capacidad para comunicar lo realmente importante de la música y del arte. Como tal, no requiere una actuación perfecta sino de un sentimiento positivo. “Lo bello del arte” confirma, “es que es una carrera que no tiene fin, siempre es distinto. Te obliga cada vez a un pensamiento más profundo”.
El Gran Sistema Helena Wessman, gerente y directora artística de la Sinfónica de Gotemburgo es ferviente creyente en “El Sistema” y que el Sr. Dudamel está generando grandes olas de energía en el mundo. Su fundador, el Sr. José Antonio Abreu, está ayudando a cambiar las vidas de muchos niños venezolanos con este exitoso programa, incluyendo la del propio Dudamel y la de niños en Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Dinamarca, Portugal y países asiáticos. El conductor asegura que “El Sistema” le ha

salvado y mantenido lejos de los problemas. Es esperanza para los niños en países no desarrollados en búsqueda de un futuro mejor y se ha transformado en un agente tan poderoso de cambio social, que es considerado un símbolo nacional en Venezuela. El programa se enfoca en niños de dos años a adolescentes de dieciséis años. Poco más de mil niños son parte de él, el ochenta por ciento se encuentra en condiciones de pobreza. El principal objetivo en “El Sistema” es enseñar a los niños a tocar como músicos adultos y lograr que sientan la música. Esto es para muchos, una educación musical en gran escala. Como lo explica el Sr. Dudamel: “Una orquesta es un modelo de sociedad ideal. Debes generar armonía. Todos deben escucharse unos a otros en un gran y complejo

audience with an amazing feeling of joy about what the greatest compositions are really about. Moving like an experienced dancer, he paints those worlds with the way he conducts while the process it itself is magic-like. His goal has been achieved. The audience feels exhilaration. And that is what happened to the L.A. Philarmonic when in a very bold move, they signed Mr. Dudamel as their musical director when he was just twenty-seven. He explains with a permanent joyful smile “When I’m conducting I like to give every part of my energy. It is the way my soul and my body are expressing what I want to interpret about the music.” You may wonder how he achieves this magic and it is in fact a very simple trick: he just tells his orchestra how to play in order it expresses not a musical note, but an emotion. The musicians in the orchestra
perform like method actors in some way and emotionality soon starts to flow naturally from the instruments. His gift relies heavily on his special ability to communicate what is truly important in the music, as well as in art. And as art, it requires not to be performed perfectly, but to feel great. “The beauty in art” he confirms, “is that it is a career that does not have an end, it is always different. It forces you to a deeper thinking.”
The Great Sistema Helena Wessman, the managing and artistic director of the Göteborg Symphony is a strong believer in El Sistema, and says that Gustavo is creating big waves of energy throughout the world. Its founder, Mr. José Antonio Abreu, is helping change the lives of many venezuelan children with this successful youth music program, including Mr. Dudamel’s and children from the U.S., U.K., Denmark, Portugal and asian countries. He assures that “El Sistema“ saved him and kept him away from a troubled town. It means hope for the kids in underdevelopment conditions in search of a better future. It has turned in such a powerful agent of social change, that it is considered a national symbol for Venezuela. El Sistema works with children as young as two years and up to sixteen years. Just over one thousand children are part of it and eighty per cent are poor. Their main objective at El Sistema is to teach them to play like an adult musician and to get them to feel the music. This is for many, musical education in a grand scale. As Mr. Dudamel explains, “An

grupo de personas con personalidades distintas que deben comunicarse. Y debes tener disciplina. El objetivo no es hacer mejores músicos, sino mejores ciudadanos, niños que construyen sus vidas a partir de la música”. Esta es una de las razones por las que el conductor lleva el mensaje y participa activamente en la Orquesta Juvenil de Los Ángeles (YOLA). Habiendo conquistado el mundo con su don y simpatía, sueña con uno en el que todos los niños puedan tener acceso a la cultura, en espera que sea un lugar más sensible y más maduro. “La música es un arte especial. Tú no la ves. La música es energía, y eso al ser humano lo hace vivir experiencias que lo sensibilizan”. Lo más importante para él es que la gente comprenda que lo que sea que decida hacer en la vida, simple o complejo, se haga con amor. “Sólo así la gente estará preparada para el éxito en la vida. El éxito no implica fama o una posición social. El éxito es ser feliz y sentirse completo”.
Una humilde inspiración Gustavo Dudamel ha sido nombrado Músico del Año 2013 por Musical America, uno de los honores más importantes en la industria de la música clásica. Le fue otorgado el título de Chevalier Dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres en París en 2009 y ha recibido numerosos galardones incluyendo un doctorado honorario de la Universidad de Gotemburgo en 2012, el premio Príncipe de Asturias para las Artes en 2008 y un doctorado honorario de la Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado de su natal Barquisimeto. Sin embargo, su mayor premio no es el resultado de su gran genialidad musical sino de su extraordinaria humildad. “La fama tiene dos caras para mí”, confiesa, “una es cuando la fama es una inspiración para otras personas. La otra es cuando es una inspiración para uno. En el segundo caso, es una cuestión de ego. En el primero, ves a niños que te llaman y que tu imagen es inspiración para que ellos puedan obtener sus logros. Para mí, eso es maravilloso. Sientes que las cosas están yendo por el camino correcto”.

You have to have discipline. The point is not to build better musicians. It’s to build better citizens, to see children building their lives from music.” This is one of the reasons why he is not only spreading the message across the world, but why he is actively working with the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA). Having conquered the world with his gift and his sympathy, he daydreams of a world in which every child has access to art and culture in hope that the world is a more sensitive and more mature place. “Music is a special art form. You can’t see music. Music is energy. And it makes us feel an experience that makes us more sensitive.” The most important thing for Mr. Dudamel is to make people understand that whatever they do in life, simple or complex, it has to be made with love. “Only then will people be prepared to be successful in life. Success does not imply fame or a social position. Success is being happy and feeling fulfilled.”
A Humble Inspiration He has recently been named Musical America’s 2013 Musician of the Year, one of the highest honors in the classical music industry. He was also inducted into l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres as a Chevalier in Paris in 2009 having received numerous prestigious awards including an honorary doctorate from the University of Gothenburg in 2012, the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 2008 and honorary doctorate from the Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado in his hometown of Barquisimeto. However, Mr. Dudamel greatest prize is not just a result of his great musical geniality, but rather his extraordinary humbleness. “Fame has two sides for me,” he stated. “One is when fame is an inspiration for other people. The other is when fame is an inspiration for you. In the second case, it becomes an ego thing. In the first, you see the children calling you, and your image is an inspiration for them to accomplish things. For me, that’s amazing. You feel like things are going the right way.”

This jet’s windows are incremented twenty per cent in height, which allows for more natural light into the cabin and generates an ampler and more comfortable environment. La Mezquita de las Flores Uno de los proyectos más deslumbrantes que han realizado hasta la fecha es la Gran Mezquita de Sheikh Zayed en Abu Dhabi (Emiratos Árabes Unidos), la tercera mezquita más grande del mundo. Con sus 22.412 metros cuadrados, este lugar sagrado honra la memoria del Sheik Zyed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Padre de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Yousif Al Obaidli, Director General de la mezquita, afirma que el lugar es “una de las atracciones mundiales de las que más se habla”. Y no es para menos. La obra requirió más de dos años para completarse, logrando un alto estándar de excelencia en un símbolo nacional de tanta importancia. El mismo Sheik Zyed bin Sultan Al Nahyan se involucró en su proceso de diseño, la elección de los colores y los materiales a emplear. Dos arquitectos italianos, Rocco Magnoli y Lorenzo Carmellini, estuvieron a cargo de la obra y el diseño interior. La inspiración para el proyecto surgió del concepto tradicional de tolerancia originado en la era de oro islámica que se basa en el respeto y el intercambio de ideas para el enriquecimiento de la vida humana y la sociedad. Las tradicionales estrellas de cinco puntas representativas del universo, y la palma asociada a la naturaleza o la palma de la mano que escribe el Texto Sagrado, fueron la base para las distintas composiciones. El cliente sin embargo, incluyó posteriormente el elemento floral que dio paso a complejas formas además de distintos materiales, acabados y colores. Las líneas curvas y la exactitud geométrica formando motivos florales adornan el interior en variedad de texturas y tonos. Sin embargo, en la pared de Qibla el color de los motivos es inexistente para así permitir la concentración de los fieles en su oración. Esta compleja pared presenta dos secciones laterales que reflejan el motivo de la pared opuesta. En su parte central se encuentra el Mihrab realizado con mosaico en oro, mientras que el resto de la superficie presenta elaboradas incrustaciones de mosaico y oro blanco. Esta área central representa un libro abierto ofreciendo el nombre de Allah en sus noventa y nueve variaciones, todos ellos tallados en mármol y retroiluminados. Tal vez el área más impactante de la mezquita sea el Sahan, el espacio abierto de 17.500 metros cuadrados realizada en mosaico y piedras preciosas, diseñada por el artista británico Kevin Dean. Esta extensa superficie presenta una composición de flores de gran tamaño y es el piso de mosaico más grande que jamás se haya realizado. La Gran Mezquita, es también la obra maestra más exquisita que hayan creado los artesanos italianos de Fantini Mosaici en sus más de cien años de actividad.
The Mosque of the Flowers One of the most astonishing projects that they have carried out up-to-date is the Sheikh Zayed Grande Mosque in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), the third biggest mosque in the world. With its 22.412 square meters, this sacred place honors the memory of Sheik Zyed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the beloved Father of the United Arab Emirates. Yousif Al Obaidli, Director General of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center claims that the mosque is “one of the world’s most talked about attractions.” And he is not exaggerating in the least. The work required more than two years to be completed, achieving a high standard of excellence in a national symbol of such importance. The very Sheik Zyed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was involved in the design process and the selection of colors and materials to be used. Two Italian architects, Rocco Magnoli and Lorenzo Carmellini, were in charge of the work and the interior design. The inspiration for the project sprang from the traditional concept of tolerance originated in the Islamic Golden era, which is based on respect and exchange of ideas for the enriching of human life and society. The traditional five-pointed stars representative of the universe and the palm associated to nature or the palm of the hand that writes the Sacred Text, where, then, the basis for the different compositions. The customer, however, included later the floral element which gave way to complex shapes besides different materials, finishes and colors. The curved lines and the exact geometry forming floral patterns decorate the interior in a variety of textures and shades. Nevertheless, on the Qibla wall, the color of patterns is inexistent, to allow for the concentration of worshippers in their prayers. This complex wall of great length presents us with two lateral sections which reflect the design on the opposite wall. In its central section we can find the Mihrab made in gold, whereas the rest of the surface reveals elaborated inlays of mosaic and white gold, capturing the concept of the metaphorical passage towards Mecca in a work of incredible complexity and beauty. This central area represents an open book offering Allah’s name in its ninety nine variations, all of them carved in marble as well as backlit. Maybe the most impressive area of the mosque is the Sahan, the 17,500 square meters open space, entirely made of mosaic and precious stones and designed by British artist Kevin Dean. This ample surface presents a composition of large sized flowers and it the biggest mosaic floor ever made. The Grande Mosque is also the most exquisite masterpiece the Italian craftspeople at Fantini Mosaici have ever created in their more than a century of work.

ómo se mantiene aún con vida una pasión de cincuenta años? Tal vez es obra del destino y de la fe, pero no de la casualidad. Varios son los ingredientes que han hecho trascender no sólo la pasión, sino también el status de vehículo deportivo por excelencia por varias generaciones de entusiastas. La sensibilidad que comparten todos ellos sumada a la de sus creadores, ha sabido convertir al Porsche 911 en un verdadero objeto de culto. Sin embargo y a pesar del éxito del que ha gozado ininterrumpidamente en estas últimas cinco décadas, el Porsche 911 no ha tenido un fácil arranque. Bajo una gran presión, el nuevo modelo que sustituiría al primer éxito de la marca –el Porsche 356, ya una leyenda en su tiempo–, debía contar con un nuevo diseño desde cero que fuera genuinamente adelantado a su época. Superada esta situación de forma exitosa, la compañía debió enfrentar un nuevo desafío. Se vió en la obligación de cambiar el nombre original “901” con el que fue presentado el modelo en el International Motor Show (IAA) en Setiembre de 1963. La fabricante francesa Peugeot planteó su queja sobre la violación de las leyes de protección de marcas y patentes debido a que utiliza nombres formados por números de tres dígitos con un cero en el medio, desde 1929. Un año más tarde a la presentación de la renombrada promesa, la joven compañía Porsche se vio en la obligación de arriesgarse comercialmente y adquirir la fabricante de carrocerías Karosseriewerk Reutter & Co. GmbH con sus 1.000 empleados para posibilitar su producción. No quedan dudas que sin la fe y la gran convicción del Sr. Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, el 911 no sería hoy uno de los automóviles más emblemáticos y admirados de la historia.

ow can a passion still be kept alive after 50 years? Maybe it is the work of destiny and faith, but certainly it is not the work of chance. Several ingredients help not only passion transcend, but also the sports status par excellence that the iconic model has gained thanks to several generations of die-hard enthusiasts. The sensitivity they all share with the addition of its creator’s, has transformed the Porsche 911 in a powerful cult object. However and in spite of the success it has enjoyed without interruption for the last five decades, the Porsche 911 has not had an easy start. This new model was designed under pressure as it had to replace the brand’s first and great success – the Porsche 356, already a legend in its time –, it had to be made from scratch and it had to be genuinely advanced for the times in which it was to be launched. Once this was successfully achieved, the company was faced with a new challenge. The original new model’s name “901” with which it was launched at the International Motor Show (IAA) in September 1963, had to be changed. Peugeot indicated that the type name “901” was in violation of French copyright and trademark protection laws. The three-digit numbers with a zero in the middle had been used by the French company since 1929. The simplest solution to fix all promotional materials and legends on the car was found. A year later after the re-naming was done, the young company had to take a commercial risk by acquiring Karosseriewerk Reutter & Co. GmbH and its 1.000 employees in order to start its production. There is no doubt that without Mr. Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, the 911 would not be one of the most emblematic and admired cars in history.

Diseño Atemporal El Porsche 911 es dueño absoluto de un icónico diseño exterior. El mismo fue realizado entre el Sr. Erwin Komenda y el Sr. Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche –hijo del fundador Ferry Porsche – cuando tenía tan sólo 27 años. Las líneas curvas que fueron dibujadas hace cincuenta años aún no han podido ser borradas por el paso del tiempo, sino que apenas han sido modificadas generación tras generación. Esto explica de forma elocuente la filosofía detrás de un exitoso diseño que logra prevalecer con gran dignidad y eficiencia: se trata de un excelente diseño que ha sido mejorado al máximo en todas sus posibilidades para intentar en cada nueva generación acercarse más a la perfección. El motivo es más que suficiente para que cada año se estén constantemente implementando nuevas tecnologías y mejoras, incluso aún en su ya estilizada silueta. Este excepcional ejemplo de diseño atemporal se define también por la cuidada atención al detalle sobre esas mejoras. Ninguno pasa individualmente desapercibido, y sin embargo, los detalles cuando se observan todos juntos parecen pasar desapercibidos. Una muestra de ellos es el tejido utilizado en el 911 Cabriolet de su séptima generación, que copia de forma casi exacta la curvatura del techo de la versión Coupé mediante mecanismos especiales para esa situación que puedan recrear esa singular forma. Timeless Design The Porsche 911 is an absolute icon of design. It was developed by Mr. Erwin Komenda and designed by Mr. Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche – son of Mr. Ferry Porsche – when he was only twenty seven years old. The curved lines that were drawn fifty years ago could not be erased by the passage of time, but were slightly modified generation after generation. This eloquently explains the philosophy behind a successful design that prevails with dignity and efficiency: it is a boasting excellence design that has been improved to its maximum possibilities while trying to reach perfection at the same time. It is a reason strong enough to keep implementing new technologies and making improvements every year, even including its already stylized silhouette. This exceptional example of timeless design is also defined by the impressive attention to detail in each version. No detail goes individually unnoticed, but when looked at all details together, they seem to go unnoticed. Proof of this is the fabric hood in the 911 Cabriolet of its seventh generation that follows the contours set by the Coupé roof almost exactly, thanks to special mechanisms that can recreate the singular shape. For Mr. Ferdinand Alexander, design must be functional, and functionality must be translated visually into aesthetics without any reliance on gimmicks that have to be explained.
Avoiding the common temptation of following fashionable aesthetic trends which are only passing fads is a policy that allowed the car to be treated like “a classic in permanent evolution”, exactly what the car signifies. As Mr. Ferdinand Alexander used to proclaim: “Good design has to be honest.” And more than following the inconsistency and ever changing moods of fashion and the trends of “me too” designs, Porsche chooses the path of innovation and evolution. Some of them include the Targa roll-over protection bar (1965), internally ventilated disc brakes (1966), turbocharging (1973), charge air cooling (1977), all-wheel drive (1988), the Tiptronic gearbox (1989), bi-turbocharging (1995), ceramic brake discs (2001) and most recently, the seven-speed manual gearbox (2011).

Racing Blood The fact that every Porsche 911 is intimately linked to the tradition and history of car racing, surely collaborates in arousing some feelings. Porsche achieved its first victory in the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally to the hands of Mr. Vic Elford, but many of the concepts and technologies used were being implemented in a competition for the first time. This is one of the reasons that make the mythical Porsche 911 even more special and as such, the greatest expression of high performance. It comes as no surprise that being a product developed in the circuits, two-thirds of all Porsche cars ever built are still on the world’s streets today. It is very remarkable that the first Type F generation of Porsche 911 besides from being robust, is still genuinely fast. But the years of Porsche success in the racing tracks before its founding, are amazingly long-lived. In the first decade of 1900s, Mr. Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche’s father – interestingly also named Ferdinand Porsche – had already designed the Austro-Daimler Sacha that he himself raced, obtaining 34 victories. When Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche GmbH company was founded together with his son Ferry in 1931 in a location that today belongs to the Czech Republic, the first projects it had were the successful Auto Union Grand Prix and Auto Union P for competition. Then, another two notorious designs in the history of automobile would be created: Volkswagen Type 1 – commonly known as “The People’s Car” –, and the no less iconic Type 360 “Cisitalia” for competition. However, racing tracks are not, and have never been the only road traveled by such a productive family. Mr. Ferdinand Porsche created the first hybrid, electric and all-wheel drive traction car known as “Lohner-Porsche.” Already in World War II, the German brand also designed some military vehicles like the singular and all-wheel drive amphibian Jagdwagen. It was not until the war ended that the Porsche 356 was launched, the first car manufactured in series production by the company, and the one that started its never ending successful track record.

An Exhilarating Celebration To celebrate fifty years of the 911 immortal legend, Porsche has designed the “50th Anniversary” Edition based on the current 911 Carrera S. It is a coupé with flat-six rear engine, 400 hp (294 kW) and rear wheel-drive. In spite of this, it has the Carrera 4‘s wide body (typically reserved for the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models) and the legendary and beautifully restyled Fuchs wheels. The vintage look in the exterior leads to a similar interior with hound’s-tooth pattern upholstery. No other sports car has won so many races, and yet, no other has the rare privilege of being so versatile. Ferry Porsche felt deeply proud of this special feature when he stated that “the 911 is the only car that you can drive from an African safari to Le Mans, then to the theatre and onto the streets of New York.” It is such a versatile car that rode through generations without losing its fascination power. The visual pleasure that the design is capable of generating never gets out of date. This is one of those magic moments in which art, intuition and engineering converge. It does not really matter how many times it is modified over a same design to find perfection, the passion after fifty long and successful years for the Porsche 911 is still alive. And kicking.

The piece was designed in 1987 in our contemporary times by Spanish architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca, despite the chair clearly shows links to earlier times. It combines with masterful harmony the varied and different disciplines the author has ventured into: architecture, design, painting and writing. All of them flow with enviable magnetism through this exclusive authored piece, which is a reference of the great Iberic design of the XX century. The testimonial piece was chosen for the 1989 Premio de Diseño Industrial de Adi-Fad, the 1990 Iberdiseño, and more recently, selected at the 2011 Maison et Objets (Paris). For the creator, wood is an ideal element to achieve aesthetic modulation: “You can vary thickness and give an area the perfect amount it requires structurally, and aesthetically. Allowing the beautiful texture of the ash to show, makes every chair unique, a characteristic that is accentuated by the leather creases and irregularities in its seat.” Perfect for the Milà House in Barcelona, conceived by Antoni Gaudí in 1906, and worthy of the MoMA in New York or the Centre George Pompidou in Paris where artwork of architect Oscar Tusquets Blanca has been exhibited, the European architecture of the early twentieth century collaborates in distracting us from the contemporaneity the piece has, but not from the beauty of its refined yet whimsical curves. Sólo hay momentos de grandes logros como este. Su trabajo artístico como creador en esta pieza en particular, logra tocar lo más profundo de la mente y el alma con su tangible belleza.
Oscar Tusquets Blanca is designer for BD Barcelona since 1972 and his work also includes Salvador Dalí furniture design that the celebrated Spanish brand also produces. He keeps a Renaissance approach in his work and is convinced that the art and its many disciplines do not evolve but they simply come and go. Progress is not existant for him for there are only great moments of achievement like this one. His artistic work as creator of this particular piece, manages to touch the innermost depths of the mind and the soul with its tangible beauty.

Un Habano con Copa Propia En Mayo del año 2009 nace “La Copa Montecristo de Golf”, organizada por varias instituciones en Cuba y en la que Corporación Habanos S.A. es patrocinador oficial. El patrocinio de este torneo, avalado por la Profesional Golf Association (PGA), se hizo público en la XI edición del Festival del Habano, y viene a recrear el concepto de lujo del mismo, así como la identificación de la compañía cubana con los valores asociados a la búsqueda de calidad a través del deporte y de los ambientes naturales. El exclusivo torneo tiene como escenario el Campo de Golf de Varadero, balneario mundialmente famoso por la belleza y exotismo de sus aguas así como su ambiente. Situado a 130 kilómetros de la capital cubana, el evento se organizó para ser celebrado anualmente. En la primera edición con 73 participantes de Reino Unido, Canadá, Andorra, España, Corea, Viet Nam, Japón y Cuba, y con la presencia como invitado de honor de uno de los más importantes golfistas contemporáneos, el sudafricano Ernie Els. Este evento es hoy una acción de comunicación con los fumadores que año a año participan en el evento. En 2014 tendrá lugar del 10 al 14 de Abril.
Notas de Cata La Serie Open cuenta con cuatro vitolas, que además de la característica anilla de Montecristo, también presenta una segunda anilla en color verde inglés y oro incluyendo el nombre Open y seguidamente el de su vitola. Eagle es la opción de mayor tamaño con cepo 54 y un largo de 150 mm. Esta vitola es ideal para disfrutar cuando más tiempo se tiene. Regata es un habano figurado y tiene un cepo 46 con 135 mm de largo, muy en la línea de lo que es el Montecristo Nº2. Por su parte, Master es un robusto de 124 mm de largo, y quizás la vitola más popular. Aunque Junior, la más pequeña con su cepo 38 y su largo de 110 mm, es una vitola ideal para fumadas cortas. Notas terrosas y amaderadas se encuentran en las cuatro vitolas y en ellas se destaca además, un sabor muy suave que no generará retrogustos picantes. En el caso de Eagle, es la vitola en la que se presenta el sabor de forma más intensa, con notas a crema y chocolate, y como muchos apreciarán, muy en la línea de los Edmundo. Regata, el hermano pequeño del Montecristo Nº2 será la compañía ideal para los amantes de los deportes en el agua, en el que no faltan las notas a cuero y césped. Master presenta notas frutales y se lleva mejor con los aficionados al tennis. Junior es particularmente una buena fumada que conserva notas a cuero. Por su corto tiempo de fumada, tal vez sea mejor reservar esta vitola para el podio.

An Habano With Its Own Cup May, 2009 sees the birth of the “Montecristo Golf Cup”, organized by several institutions in Cuba and counting with Corporación Habanos S.A. as an official sponsor. Tasting notes The Open Series has four cigar vitolas, which – besides the distinctive Montecristo ring – also presents a second clover green and gold ring including the name Open followed by the one of its vitola. Eagle is the biggest option with a 54 ring gauge and 110 mm length. It is made for those smokers who have more time to devote to their smoke, in the quest for a complete pleasure. Regatta is a figurado cigar with a 46 ring gauge and 135 mm length, very much along the line of Montecristo Nº2. Then Master is a robust 124 mm long cigar and probably the most popular wrapper. However, Junior, the smallest with its 38 ring gauge and 110 mm length is of course the best option for the current smoking trends that require short but enjoyable smokes. Luego del éxito alcanzado con el ron Caliche Rum, el Sr. Rande Gerber – conocido por su vasta experiencia en la industria de bares y restaurantes, y también como el esposo de Cindy Crawford desde hace muchos años – es que junto al Sr. George Clooney y el Sr. Mike Meldman decidieron lanzarse al mercado con esta bebida que despierta tanta curiosidad como admiración. Casamigos lleva el nombre de las residencias que el Sr. Gerber y el Sr. Clooney tienen en México. Se traduce en escapadas y buenos momentos. orn in Los Cabos, to the south of Baja Peninsula in Mexico, and only a two-hour flight far from Los Angeles or Malibu, these sublime tequila boasts about famous authors. After the success achieved with Caliche Rum, Mr. Rande Gerber – known for his vast experience in the bar and restaurant industry, and also as Cindy Crawford’s many-year-long husband – is who, together with Mr. George Clooney and Mr. Mike Meldman, decided to launch into the market this drink which raises as much curiosity as admiration.
Casamigos, is named after Clooney’s and Gerber’s houses in Mexico, and roughly translates to “house of friends”. It signifies getting away and good times. Both have fallen so in love with the warm Mexican climate that they decided to build two very similar adjacent houses in the wonderful environment of Los Cabos. In their late night “research sessions,” the creators preferred a sipping tequila known as Reposado. The term refers to the aging period when the spirit rests in oak barrels. And this inspired the notion: “What if we made this stuff ourselves?”

Casamigos Es aquí mismo donde Clooney y Gerber al igual que muchos de sus familiares y amigos, disfrutaron más de cinco años el tequila “hecho por los que lo beben”. Podemos afirmar que los socios saben alguna que otra cosa que otra sobre tequila... o al menos sobre el tequila que prefieren. Eso es lo que hace que esta sea una bebida única y especial, porque es el resultado de un largo proceso de degustación para deleitar el particular paladar que ambos comparten: “Nuestra idea fue hacer el tequila más suave que mejor sabe, y que no necesita disimular su sabor con sal o con lima” cuenta Gerber. Para Clooney, Casamigos es un tequila digno de una película de John Wayne: “Para que lo deslices a lo largo de la barra del bar, lo descorches con los dientes y te sirvas un shot”. El objetivo entonces, era hacer un tequila para beber sólo u on the rocks como si fuera whisky con el sabor y textura ideales. La bebida no es un liviano experimento amateur. Algunos expertos no dudan en señalar que es “el tequila perfecto”. En 2013, Casamigos ya obtuvo la Medalla de Oro del Los Angeles International Spirits Competition.
Calidad Ultra-Premium Para lograr el sabor de Casamigos, sus creadores han realizado pruebas a ciegas con sus amigos. Su producción se realiza en Jalisco, México, de donde proviene precisamente el Ágave tequilana weber de variedad azul con el que se produce esta tequila. Esta planta florece sólo una vez en su vida, nace en los suelos de arcilla rojiza de los Altos de Jalisco, y es cosechada recién al cumplir un mínimo de siete años. Sólo los mejores ejemplares de acuerdo a su calidad y su tamaño son cuidadosamente seleccionados a mano. Las piñas se tuestan en hornos tradicionales de ladrillo por 72 horas (diez veces más de lo que se acostumbra) y el proceso de destilado se realiza en alambiques tradicionales, insumiendo más de 80 horas, el doble de lo habitual. Esto genera un tequila de muy alta calidad que no quema en la boca. Mientras que Casamigos Blanco reposa por dos meses, es refinado y claro, con sutiles notas a vainilla y suave retrogusto a coco tostado y dulce de leche, Casamigos Reposado lo hace por siete meses, ambos en cascos de roble americano. Este último es suave y limpio, con notas a caramelo, un balance perfecto y un sabor amaderado que deja un retrogusto cálido y ameno con sabor a cremoso caramelo. ¿Aún se resiste? Para muchos amantes del tequila, no es de importancia quienes firman la etiqueta en cada botella de Casamigos, sino su verdadera calidad ultra-premium. Actualmente se encuentra aún tímidamente en selectos hoteles, bares y restaurants. Tal es el caso de Cipriani, uno de los hoteles más célebres del mundo en la isla de la Giudecca en Venecia, donde el Sr. Clooney no sólo inventó su cocktail “Goodnight” en uno de sus bares, sino donde además, entrega personalmente en alguna ocasión las botellas de este sublime tequila con reminiscencias a Hollywood, familia, amigos, playa, palmeras e inolvidables momentos.

Casamigos It is right there where Mr. Clooney and Mr. Gerber, as well as many of their relatives and friends, have enjoyed the tequila “brought to you by those who drink it” for more than five years. We can claim that the partners know a few things about tequila… or at least of the tequila they prefer. This is what makes it a unique and special spirit, because it is the result of a long degustation process to delight the refined palate that they share. “Our idea was to make the best-tasting, smoothest tequila whose taste didn’t have to be covered up with salt or lime”, says Mr. Gerber. Mr. Clooney’s claim is that Casamigos is a tequila worthy of a John Wayne movie: “you slide the bottle down the bar, pull the cork out with your teeth, and pour yourself a shot.” The objective then, was to produce a tequila to be served neat or on the rocks, as if it were whisky, with ideal flavor and texture. The drink is not a light amateur experiment. Some experts do not doubt to name it as “the perfect tequila”. In 2013, Casamigos has already obtained the Gold Medal from the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition.
Ultra-Premium Quality To achieve the flavor of Casamigos, its creators have performed blind taste tests with friends until they knew they got it right. Its production is done in Jalisco (Mexico), where the Blue Weber agaves precisely come from. The plant, which blooms only once in its life, grows in the red clay soils of the Jalisco Highlands, and is harvested only after it has grown for at least seven years. Only the best samples are selected, according to their quality and size – a job that is carefully performed by hand. The pines are toasted in traditional adobe brick ovens for 72 hours (ten times longer than what it normally takes) and distillation process is carried out in traditional pot stills taking more than 80 hours, twice as much as usual. This generates a high quality tequila that does not burn the mouth. While Casamigos Blanco rests for two months and is smooth and clear, with subtle vanilla notes and hints of toasted coconut and caramel, on the other hand, Casamigos Reposado takes seven months to rest and is crisp and clear, with a perfect balance and a woody note, and subtle hints of vanilla and a smooth finish. Can you still resist the temptation? For many tequila lovers, who signs the label of each Casamigos bottle is not as important as its true ultra-premium quality. It is currently timidly found in selected hotels, bars and restaurants. Such is the case of Cipriani, one of the most world famous hotels on the island of Giudecca in Venice, in one of whose bars Mr. Clooney not only invented his “Goodnight” cocktail but where he also personally delivers, in some special and extraordinary occasions, the bottles of this sublime tequila with its reminiscences to Hollywood, family, friends, beaches, palm trees and unforgettable times.

Establecida en 1912, D’Arenberg es una de las bodegas más antiguas y famosas de Australia. De color ámbar oscuro, con una enorme variedad de notas que van desde la nuez y cereza al caramelo, miel y mermelada. Sabores a pastel de frutas, con generosidad extraordinaria, gran paladar y la opulencia de un cuerpo completo. El vino es casi un licor, pero no demasiado dulce por su acidez natural muy bien lograda. Un final largo, muy agradable y que perdura en la memoria.
El nombre “Los Diez” nace de la conmemoración de los primeros diez años de Domaines Barons de Rothschild en Chile. La primera cosecha de este vino es en 1990, cuyas características son ampliamente reconocidas y apreciadas en el mundo entero. De color rojo rubí intenso, es un vino elegante, con notas de frutos negros, especias y cedro. Muy concentrado, de gran persistencia y una boca con gran cantidad de taninos y fruta. Agradable final carnoso y elegante.

Highly matured fruit, olives and dry fruits are present in a very complex and aromatic nose. It offers a spicy but nicely rounded finish with a very well integrated wood. Ample, generous and dense, with a velvety start and an explosion of fruits, coffee, chocolate and spices that are persistent in the end.
Established in 1912, D’Arenberg is one of the oldest and more distinguished wineries in Australia. With an amber color and with a rich variety of notes including walnut, cherry, caramel, honey and marmalade. Fruit cake flavors with an extraordinary generosity, great palate and an opulent full-bodied wine. It is almost a liquor, but not as sweet as one due to its natural acidity that is very well done. A prolonged and very pleasant finish that will be remembered for long.
The origin of the name "Los Diez" ("The Tens") is a tribute to the first ten years of Domaines Barons de Rothschild in Chile.
