Q&A WITH

the President & CEO

Q. Anastasia is the first KeyBank Broadway Series show of 2020. In addition to hosting 50 performances between the runs of Mean Girls and Anastasia, there is so much that has been happening at Playhouse Square to start off the New Year. Could you give us an update? A: We certainly have had an eventful start to the year! Our not-for-profit mission is at work in so many ways. On January 8, we held a “topping out ceremony for The Lumen apartment tower, signifying that the building has reached its full height. And in so many ways, we all stand taller as this impressive milestone is reached. Leasing begins early next month and we will welcome our first residents at the end of June. Whether you are interested in living in The Lumen or not, I hope you will feel pride in this accomplishment. People coming to see shows here is what has validated Playhouse Square as a vibrant district, and that is the bedrock on which The Lumen stands. Turning from real estate to programming, one of the ways we remain a vibrant and relevant entertainment district is to find new ways to engage audiences. It has been a dream to see the Cleveland International Film Festival return to Playhouse Square where it first began, and I am so proud the entire festival will move here beginning in 2021. Looking ahead, our young professionals group, Partners, has been busily planning for the 29th Jump Back Ball on February 29, their smashing fundraiser that sells out every year. The Partners have been an essential part of Playhouse Square for almost three decades, raising more than $4 million in support of our not-for-profit mission. Q. Broadway audiences are also looking forward to the announcement of the 2020-2021 KeyBank Broadway Series on March 3. Any hints? A. The best shows are yet to be seen! Q. As our guests settle into their seats for Anastasia, would you share some thoughts about why you wanted to bring this show to Cleveland? A. Anastasia is an engaging story to begin with; this production turns it into a feast for the eyes and ears. The costumes and sets are so visually rich you will want to sit and take them in as you would a magnificent painting at the Cleveland Museum of Art. On top of that is the lush score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. This is the perfect show to chase away the gray cloud of winter.

SETTING THE STAGE

for success

We believe that all Cleveland youth should have access to high-quality arts education. Through the generosity of our donors, we have invested more than $5 million since 2016 to scale up neighborhood-based programs that now serve 3,000 youth year-round in music, dance, theater, photography, literary arts and curatorial mastery. That’s setting the stage for success. Find your passion, and partner with the Cleveland Foundation to make your greatest charitable impact.

Our passion goes beyond the financial services we provide our clients and extends to supporting the culture and hardworking attitude that Cleveland residents embody. We understand the responsibility we have in the community to concentrate our most valuable resources, time and energy, on the lifeblood of our city — the people, and are deeply committed to stabilizing and revitalizing our neighborhoods. Through 2018, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $423 million in Northeast Ohio as part of our National Community Benefits Plan, which supports low to moderate income individuals and communities through community development lending for affordable housing, small business lending, mortgage lending and transformative philanthropy. We are bringing hope and opportunity to the communities where we do business and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed. Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

BROADWAY LAUNCH MARCH 3!

BROADWAY NEWS Few would disagree if you called Laurie Metcalf the hardest-working woman in showbusiness! March 3 she stars with Rupert Everett in the revival of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolff, marking her fifth consecutive season on Broadway. During those five seasons she has also managed to be on TV in regular recurring roles as Sheldon’s Mom on The Big Bang Theory, as well as the series Getting On, The McCarthys and The Conners (formerly Roseanne). Add to that her Oscar-nominated film role in Lady Bird plus the voice of Mrs. Davis in Toy Story 3 and 4. Both just opened on Broadway: David Alan Grier and Blair Underwood star in the Pulitzer Prizewinning crime drama A Soldier’s Play, and the first major New York revival of West Side Story to deviate from the original Jerome Robbins’ choreography opened Feb. 6.

A VENERABLE “99!”

The first two theaters to originally open at Playhouse Square turn “99” this month: the KeyBank State Theatre (Feb. 5) and the Mimi Ohio Theatre (Feb. 14). Artist James Daugherty and an assistant had worked three continuous months to finish the colorful murals painted directly on the walls of the KeyBank State’s Lobby in time for its opening. Daugherty died Feb. 21, 1974, but not before sending a congratulatory letter to Playhouse Square the year prior when the Playhouse Square Cabaret re-opened the formerly boarded up venue. Daugherty expressed his joy that the murals would be seen again by the public “after their long entombment like something out of Arabian Nights! Perhaps you have started a Cleveland renaissance… a new cultural era of the Middle West.”

The valuable group of Playhouse Square volunteers, known as the “RedCoats,” because of their red blazers, are comprised of 2,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the theater and a desire to give back to the community. RedCoats believe so strongly in what Playhouse Square contributes to our community that they are willing to pledge their time and talents to every facet of Playhouse Square. Most volunteer at the 1,000+ performances we host each year — but many are also behind the scenes. What do RedCoats receive in return? They: …make new friends …make a contribution to the arts …feel appreciated …have fun as a valued member of the Playhouse Square “family” RedCoats must be able to make weekly commitments to volunteer 4 to 5 hours per shift. Matinee show crews may be scheduled anytime between 9 a.m. –5 p.m. Evening crews between 5:30 –11 p.m. Volunteers pick the best day and time to fit their schedule. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team! Playhouse Square expects the same high standards of professionalism from its volunteers as it does from its full-time staff members. More information on becoming a RedCoat is available at playhousesquare.org/volunteer.
