2022-2023
DEAR FRIENDS Amy Brady
We extend our deepest gratitude to Gina Vernaci for her many years of service to Playhouse Square as her tenure as President and CEO ends. Her efforts positioned Playhouse Square as a premier destination for touring Broadway shows, leading to the expansion of the KeyBank Broadway Series from one week per run to two weeks and then three — a notable feat for a market the size of Cleveland. She was instrumental in the creation of our Education Department, welcoming the Cleveland International Film Festival as a new resident company and the return of Cleveland Ballet. She also shepherded the organization through one of its most difficult periods — the prolonged pandemic-caused closure and reopening of the theaters. We wish her all the best as she begins her next chapter.
Now, it is my great pleasure to welcome Craig Hassall to both Playhouse Square and to Cleveland. Craig has completed his tenure as Chief Executive of Royal Albert Hall in London and now officially steps into his role as our President and CEO.
The Playhouse Square Board of Trustees and I are confident that Craig, one of the world’s top artistic leaders, will continue to build upon our position of strength and expand our local, national and international impact. Craig is a bold, visionary thinker with unparalleled ability in operations; broad, international experience; and deep relationships across the performing arts industry.
In addition to his role as Chief Executive of the Royal Albert Hall, he previously held the Chief Executive position at Opera Australia, and was Managing Director of the English National Ballet. He was also Chief Operating Officer at Raymond Gubbay Limited, a prominent commercial promoter in the UK, and held senior artistic roles for major projects including the 2000 and 2012 Olympic Games in Sydney and London.
Craig is eager to serve our community and you, our knowledgeable, enthusiastic audiences. Please join me in welcoming him to Northeast Ohio when you see him at the theater or around the district!
Sincerely,
Amy Brady Chair, Board of TrusteesWE’RE PROUD to support Playhouse Square
Welcome to Playhouse Square! As a longtime supporter of the Broadway Series, all of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying the best live theater experience that Cleveland has to offer.
As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares KeyBank’s mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. We are proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.
Since 2017, KeyBank has made investments totaling more than $1 billion in Northeast Ohio as part of our National Community Benefits Plan, which supports low to moderate income individuals and neighborhoods through lending for affordable housing, small businesses, mortgage and transformative philanthropy.
Recently, we fulfilled our aggregate $16.5 billion goal ahead of schedule and increased our national commitment to $40 billion dollars. Our investments will continue to focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed.
Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Kelly Lamirand, KeyBank Cleveland Market PresidentThe best audience deserves the best coverage.

For the past several months, I have been helping my seventh-grade daughter study for her Greek mythology tests. We have been going over vocabulary, characters and stories. Like the game of Telephone, we have talked about how myths evolve and develop over time as they are passed from storyteller to storyteller. The result of this can be multiple versions of the same story.
Hadestown weaves together a version of the mythical tales of the young lovers Orpheus and Eurydice and the at-odds relationship of Hades and his wife Persephone.
Leading us through this journey is Hermes, the worldly-wise master of ceremonies, and friend and mentor of Orpheus. Orpheus is on a musical mission to change the world and win the love of Eurydice. Eurydice is a homeless runaway who has experienced many hardships in her young life, and thus is struggling with trusting others. Hades is the God of the Underworld and is an unkind, greedy, fervent industrialist.
Persephone is the Goddess of the Underworld. She begrudgingly spends half of her time with Hades in the Underworld, causing the fall and winter seasons, and the other half above, bringing spring and summer to the Earth. She is the good-time party girl in order to ease her disenchantment with this arrangement and other problems in her marriage.
Symbolizing and narrating the conscience and inner thoughts of some of the main characters are the Fates, a force-to-be-reckoned-with trio, who are like a gusty wind.
You need not be an expert in Greek mythology to understand and enjoy this eight-time Tony Award winner, which includes the prize for Best Musical. The story, masterfully written by American singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and brilliantly directed by Rachel Chavkin, will be stunningly revealed in front of your eyes. Both Mitchell and Chavkin took home Tony Awards for their roles in creating this groundbreaking musical. Mitchell’s New Orleans-style Jazz, Blues, Gospel and Folkinspired sound — combined with her poetic and playful lyrics — are engaging, haunting, intense, timely and entertaining.
The set, designed by Tony Award winner Rachel Hauck, has an above-ground that is inspired by a combination of Preservation Hall, the New Orleans French Quarter and a Greek amphitheater. The Underworld is a dark, rusting, rotting industrial factory of sorts that represents the decaying world of the American Industrial Revolution.
The themes of love, hope, uncertainty, resilience, fear, climate change and oppression are universal and still timely, even though Mitchell wrote the original piece for a DIY theater project in 2006. She turned that project into a Grammy-nominated concept album in 2010 before new productions were mounted in the United States, Canada and England. After many rewrites and redesigns, we have ultimately been graced with this critically acclaimed Broadway musical. Good things take time. Great things take longer.
Cheers “to the world we dream about, and the one we live in now.”
Enjoy,
