DEAR FRIENDS

Amy Brady

A

ll of us at Playhouse Square wish you a healthy and prosperous 2020 and beyond. In the brief time I have served as Board Chair, it has been gratifying to be part of the excitement Playhouse Square brings to Northeast Ohio. This year is already shaping up to be a transformational one. The most visible change is the ongoing construction across from the Connor Palace: The Lumen, the 34-story, 396-foot, 318-unit, $135 million apartment project that has long been Playhouse Square’s dream to build. As the biggest residential project in 40 years in Cleveland, The Lumen will not only add vibrancy and residents to the theater environs but change the Cleveland skyline. Scheduled to open this summer, The Lumen already has a substantial list of interested occupants, and that list grows weekly. While The Lumen and other bricks-and-mortar updates, coupled with our 2020 blockbuster musicals (the premiere of Disney’s Frozen and the return of Hamilton) are accomplishments easily seen, what audiences don’t see is the amount of time and work put in by our energetic Playhouse Square Board and staff to make impactful ideas become reality. I would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank each board and staff member Our Board (a list of whom is found in your playbill) is comprised of many outstanding community and philanthropic leaders. They are a superb melting pot of talents and backgrounds, all of which further enhance Playhouse Square’s operation, reputation and standing as the country’s largest performing arts center outside New York. We thank our Board for their devotion in helping us remain not only one of the largest performing arts centers, but one of the finest. I also want to thank our generous donors. Without your contributions we could not fulfill our notfor-profit mission. It is our goal to continue to build on the excitement and magic that the Playhouse Square experience is — with outstanding performances, community outreach and economic development. We want you to enjoy yourself each time you come to Playhouse Square and to feel pride in your community. We encourage you to always bring your family and friends to join in the excitement that is Playhouse Square.

Happy New Year,

Amy Brady Chair, Playhouse Square Board

SETTING THE STAGE

for success

Through the generosity of our donors, we have invested more than $5 million since 2016 to scale up neighborhood-based programs that now serve 3,000 youth year-round in music, dance, theater, photography, literary arts and curatorial mastery. That’s setting the stage for success. Find your passion, and partner with the Cleveland Foundation to make your greatest charitable impact.

MORE MEMORIES THAN CANDY/ FLOWERS!

BROADWAY NEWS Bob Dylan has composed the music for the Girl From The North Country, coming to Broadway in February. Written and directed by Conor McPherson, it will star Austin Scott, currently playing the lead in Hamilton. The Great Depression-era-set musical offers a slice-of-life look at a small community in Duluth, Minnesota (Dylan’s birthplace), where the Laine family operates a rundown guesthouse. Katharine McPhee, Waitress’s final “Jenna” when it closed on Broadway Jan. 5, leaves to join her husband, composer David Foster, as his special guest for his tour of “An Intimate Evening with David Foster.” The tour includes a May 3 Playhouse Square date.

The Roaring Twenties was also christened The Jazz Age, and by 1920 Cleveland had reached nationwide recognition as the fifth-largest city in the United States. The bad news: the Volstead Act became law in January ushering in Prohibition. The good news: the Cleveland Indians would go on to win the World Series and construction had begun on two new theaters to be named the Ohio and the State in an area not yet designated Playhouse Square.

MAKING MEMORIES, INSPIRING PERFORMANCE NOT ALL PLAYHOUSE SQUARE “STARS” ARE ON STAGE!

playhousesquare.org

The valuable group of Playhouse Square volunteers, known as the “RedCoats,” because of their red blazers, are comprised of 2,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the theater and a desire to give back to the community. RedCoats believe so strongly in what Playhouse Square contributes to our community that they are willing to pledge their time and talents to every facet of Playhouse Square. Most volunteer at the 1,000+ performances we host each year — but many are also behind the scenes. What do RedCoats receive in return? They: …make new friends …make a contribution to the arts …feel appreciated …have fun as a valued member of the Playhouse Square “family” RedCoats must be able to make weekly commitments to volunteer 4 to 5 hours per shift. Matinee show crews may be scheduled anytime between 9 a.m. –5 p.m. Evening crews between 5:30 –11 p.m. Volunteers pick the best day and time to fit their schedule. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team! Playhouse Square expects the same high standards of professionalism from its volunteers as it does from its full-time staff members. More information on becoming a RedCoat is available at playhousesquare.org/volunteer.

MARSHALL BRICKMAN (Book). Television: “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” (head writer), “The Dick Cavett Show” (head writer/co-producer). He has published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy and other periodicals and was the 2006 recipient of the Writers Guild of America’s Ian McClellan Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award. Jersey Boys, his first venture into musical theatre (with co-author Rick Elice), won four Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Addams Family, his second theatrical venture (also with Rick), ran over 700 performances on Broadway and had national and international tours. Upcoming projects include musicals about Roy Rogers and the Woodstock Festival of 1969. RICK ELICE (Book) co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007 Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with the great Marshall Brickman. His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, received nine 2012 Tony Award nominations (including two for Rick), won five (more than any play of the season), and is one of the most produced plays in North America. Also on Broadway, Elice wrote The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa), which also had productions on tour across North America and in Europe and South America. Getting ready for Broadway in the fall of 2018, The Cher Show, directed by Jason Moore. Heartfelt thanks to those whose work in the theater makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, David, Strong, Gaudio, Valli, McAnuff, Trujillo, Seller, Suarez, Moore, Gattelli, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers and, eternally, Roger Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now. BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of The Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit

BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writer-producers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957, they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie” – all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesley Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film Barbarella. Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with “Music to Watch Girls By”. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan.

They also co-wrote Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” (#1, July ’75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June ’01)...David Ritz DES MCANUFF (Director) is a two-time Tony Award-winning director and former artistic director of Canada’s Stratford Festival. He is also Director Emeritus of La Jolla Playhouse, where as Artistic Director he staged over 30 productions of classics, new plays and musicals. He’s co-founder of Broadway’s Dodgers. Broadway: Ain’t Too Proud, Summer, Doctor Zhivago, Jesus Christ Superstar, Guys and Dolls, Aaron Sorkin’s The Farnsworth Invention, Jersey Boys (Tony and Olivier Awards: Best Musical), Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays (Tony Award: Best Special Theatrical Event), Dracula the Musical, How to Succeed…, The Who’s Tommy (Tony and Olivier Awards: Best Director), A Walk in the Woods, Big River (Tony Awards: Best Director, Best Musical). Selected New York: Fetch Clay, Make Man (NYTW), multiple productions at The Public and BAM. Stratford highlights: A Word or Two, Caesar and Cleopatra, The Tempest (all with Christopher Plummer). Opera: Faust (The Met, ENO). TV: 700 Sundays (HBO). Film: Cousin Bette (with Jessica Lange, director), The Iron Giant (producer, BAFTA Award) and Quills (executive producer). In 2011, he was honored with a doctorate from Ryerson University where he attended theatre school. In 2012, he was awarded Canada’s Governor General’s National Arts Center Award and the Order of Canada. SERGIO TRUJILLO (Choreographer). Ain’t Too Proud (Tony Award), On Your Feet (Tony Award nominee, Outer Critics Circle/Astaire Awards), Memphis (Olivier / OCC Award, Drama Desk / Astaire Award nominations), Jersey Boys (Drama Desk / OCC / Greenroom / Dora nominations), Summer (Chita Rivera Award), A Bronx Tale (Chita Rivera Award nomination), The Addams Family, Next to Normal, Hands on a Hardbody (Drama Desk nomination), Leap of Faith (Drama Desk nomination), Guys and Dolls (Astaire Awards nomination), and All Shook Up. Director / choreographer; Arrabal (ART—Elliot Norton Award), Gloria Estefan on Broadway (Minskoff Theatre), Flashdance: The Musical (National tour), Cirque De Soleil›s Paramour (Stage Entertainment). “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film of Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence Is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for The Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership... on a handshake.
