DEAR FRIENDS

W

Gina Vernaci

elcome back to Playhouse Square and Broadway in CLE! It has been 18 long months since a Broadway show has been on our stages and what better to return to than the very first performances of the national tour of Disney’s The Lion King. Disney chose Cleveland out of other cities around the country to begin their national tour because of Playhouse Square’s expert staff, facilities that can accommodate their technical needs and rehearsal process, and YOU, our warm, welcoming, knowledgeable audiences who love The Lion King! You can take pride in knowing that Cleveland is the first city to host the tour five times. Our historic theaters, including the KeyBank State, were built 100 years ago in the wake of the last pandemic. Audiences lined up around the block when the theaters opened, eager to gather for a lively, shared experience. Once again, we find audiences craving the type of connection with each other and our community that only live performance can offer. All of us at Playhouse Square are committed to your safe return to the theaters and we thank you for doing your part to help ensure we can be healthy together. Despite the challenges of this past year, I am proud to say that we remained true to our not-for-profit mission, a key component of which is our education programming. Not only did we find ways to continue many of our programs online, we were able to reach more students with our performances for young audiences than ever before! This was made possible by the generosity of our donors and marketing partners, to whom we are most grateful. Enjoy the show, knowing that we are so very glad to see you. Thank you for staging your comeback with us.

With gratitude,

Gina Vernaci President & CEO, Playhouse Square

THIS IS BROADWAY

An outreach campaign celebrating the return of Broadway has launched, led by a short film narrated by Oprah Winfrey. Titled “This is Broadway,” the campaign hopes to provide guidance and a warm welcome to audiences returning after the 16-month shutdown of the industry. The two-and-a-half-minute video squeezes in archival footage from 99 shows which feature 735 performers. Think you can name them all? Find out at thisisbroadway.org

BROADWAY GETS A MUSEUM There’s a potato museum in Idaho, a spam museum in Texas and a hammer museum in Alaska — so, why not a Broadway museum in New York? The Museum of Broadway is set to open next summer in Times Square and will feature exhibits and artifacts to commemorate centuries of Broadway history. A retail souvenir shop is also part of the plan, but if you can’t wait until next year, the museum’s online store is now open for business at themuseumofbroadway.com.

ADAM PASCAL JOINS PRETTY WOMAN ON TOUR Pretty Woman: The Musical has found its two leading actors. Veteran Broadway star and Tony nominee Adam Pascal (RENT) will play Edward Lewis, the role played by Richard Gere in the film version. Cleveland audiences last saw Pascal as Shakespeare in Something Rotten! Wicked/Jersey Boys alum Olivia Valli is stepping into Julia Roberts’ polka dot dress as Vivian Ward. Fun fact: Olivia Valli is the real-life granddaughter of Mary Delgado and Four Seasons frontman Frankie Valli. Pretty Woman: The Musical comes to the Connor Palace as part of the KeyBank Broadway Series in March 2022.

PSQ’S CHILDREN’S THEATER SERIES RETURNS LIVE The Children’s Theater Series at Playhouse Square presented by University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital returns to the stage next year and is the perfect way to introduce, or reintroduce, the fantastic world of live theater to your family. The three-show lineup includes a musical version of the award-winning children’s book Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus, the beloved stage adaptation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar And Other Eric Carle Favorites and the electrifying Dino-Light. Season tickets are just $30 for all three shows and are available at playhousesquare.org/cts.

THE LUMEN LOOMS LARGE It’s been one year since Playhouse Square completed the largest residential project undertaken in downtown Cleveland in 40 years. Standing 396 feet tall across the street from the Connor Palace, The Lumen apartment tower offers residents commanding views of the city and Lake Erie, thoughtfully curated amenities and a spacious environment. The Lumen was chosen as the building’s name to reflect the energy surrounding Playhouse Square and the importance of light in theater and in the Playhouse Square District.

MAKING MEMORIES, INSPIRING PERFORMANCE NOT ALL PLAYHOUSE SQUARE “STARS” ARE ON STAGE! The valuable group of Playhouse Square volunteers, known as the “RedCoats,” because of their red blazers, are comprised of 2,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the theater and a desire to give back to the community. RedCoats believe so strongly in what Playhouse Square contributes to our community that they are willing to pledge their time and talents to every facet of Playhouse Square. Most volunteer at the 1,000+ performances we host each year — but many are also behind the scenes. What do RedCoats receive in return? They: …make new friends …make a contribution to the arts …feel appreciated …have fun as a valued member of the Playhouse Square “family” RedCoats must be able to make weekly commitments to volunteer 4 to 5 hours per shift. Matinee show crews may be scheduled anytime between 9 a.m. –5 p.m. Evening crews between 5:30 –11 p.m. Volunteers pick the best day and time to fit their schedule. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team! Playhouse Square expects the same high standards of professionalism from its volunteers as it does from its full-time staff members. More information on becoming a RedCoat is available at playhousesquare.org/volunteer.

SPOTLIGHT ON Fundraising

playhousesquare.org

In August, we thanked our corporate donors and foundation supporters for their continued support throughout the pandemic. They attended a networking reception, followed by a special performance of The Choir of Man. Playhouse Square’s Corporate Giving program is about making an investment in our community — as an entertainment destination, companies invest in the development of downtown Cleveland. As a community pillar, companies invest in arts education and outreach programs enriching the lives of thousands of students in our region. As an entertainment venue, companies invest in people through the opportunity to reward and entertain employees and clients with tickets to world class performances and events.

We know we’re supporting meaningful work. Theater is about human connection — something I know we’ve all been missing out on over the last year and a half... My favorite benefit of being a donor is the community benefit. It is seeing the arts make their comeback. From the actors, playwrights and stage crew members, all the way to leadership, marketing and the RedCoats — you are the ones doing all of the heavy lifting. But when we support you, we get to be part of the magic, too. ANDREA HOGBEN Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, Medical Mutual and Playhouse Square Trustee

We are so thankful for our corporate and organizational donors, and marketing partners who are committed to investing in Playhouse Square! If you have an interest in getting your company involved, contact Annie Singer at 216-640-8407 or visit playhousesquare.org/corporatesupport.

Since his arrival in America, Lebo has attracted music industry giants such as Quincy Jones, Jimmy Cliff and Hans Zimmer as mentors, allies and collaborators. Mr. Mancina’s credits include mega-hits Moana, Training Day, Speed, Twister, Bad Boys, Tarzan, and August Rush among many others.
