broadway’s new musical comedy
At last, the KeyBank Broadway Series has returned! It has been far too long since we have seen you and far too quiet here without you. Our staff, RedCoats and I have been waiting for this reunion with our BWY in CLE family. As you entered the Connor Palace, you may have noticed that we made some changes while you were away. With funds raised through the Advancing the Legacy Campaign completed prior to COVID-19, we were able to turn our prolonged closure into an opportunity to improve your theater home with new seats, new carpeting and upgraded restroom facilities. The artists who visit us are enjoying newly renovated dressing rooms as well. And now the time has come. Nestle into your seats and as you wait for the lights to dim, soak in this feeling – the delight at seeing familiar faces in the seats around you, the joy of remembering previous visits and the anticipation of a new experience. This is the moment we have been longing for. Welcome back. Sincerely,
Gina Vernaci President & CEO

elcome to Playhouse Square for the first KeyBank Broadway Series show of the season! On behalf of the Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers here, I am pleased to extend a special welcome to our season ticket holders; your return to the theater has been highly anticipated by all of us. Despite the challenges of the past 18 months, Playhouse Square is stronger than ever thanks to the philanthropy of our generous donors and marketing partners, the commitment of our season ticket holders, the dedication of our volunteers and the support of our community. We are grateful for each and every one of you. I would also like to acknowledge the Playhouse Square Trustees, who stood by the organization every step of the way. Always dedicated, this group devoted much of their time and talents supporting Playhouse Square during the time of crisis, and I am so grateful. Our incredible staff of Playhouse Square have worked hard to get the theaters back up and running and prepared to welcome all of you back to BWY in CLE. While navigating whatever challenges the pandemic may have brought to their personal lives, our team remained steadfast in their commitment to delivering the best possible experiences to you, our guests, and to continuing the work of our notfor-profit mission. We continue to be stewards of our neighborhood, ensuring Playhouse Square is a dynamic place to live, work and visit. Our Education Department is offering virtual performances and workshops for schools, and we are planning for our Dazzle Awards and Disney Musicals in Schools programs to take place in the spring. At the forefront of all our plans for this season is the health and safety of all who come to Playhouse Square – guests, artists, staff, volunteers, vendors, and those who visit for any reason. We continue to monitor COVID-19 and will adjust our protocols as needed. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us remain healthy together as we enjoy the live performances we have missed so much. Enjoy the show and thank you for staging your comeback with us.
Sincerely,
Amy Brady Chair, Board of Trustees

WE’RE PROUD
to support Playhouse Square
W
elcome back to Playhouse Square! As a longtime supporter of the Broadway Series, all of us at KeyBank are thrilled to see you here enjoying the best live theater experience that Cleveland has to offer. KeyBank is proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares our mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. Since 2017, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $1 billion in Northeast Ohio as part of our National Community Benefits Plan, which supports low to moderate income individuals and communities through community development lending for affordable housing, small business lending, mortgage lending and transformative philanthropy. Recently, we fulfilled our aggregate, $16.5 billion goal ahead of schedule and increased our national commitment to $40 billion dollars. Our investments will continue focus on economic access and equity for underserved communities and populations. We believe building a better world starts at home and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed. Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!
Sincerely,
Timothy M. Burke KeyBank Market President, Northeast Ohio

SHAKESPEARE. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE. James Bond actor Daniel Craig is trading his Walther for a kilt in a new Broadway production of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Sam Gold will direct Craig and co-star Ruth Negga in the play, produced by Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Craig previously worked with Gold in an off-Broadway production of Shakespeare’s Othello. Tickets for Macbeth go on sale this month at macbethbroadway. com and opens in April.
DIANA THE MUSICAL ON NETFLIX Diana joins the evergrowing and most-welcome list of captured Broadway performances now available for streaming. The new musical with music and lyrics by David Bryan and Joe DiPietro, and a book by DiPietro, is based on the life of Diana, Princess of Wales. The show was just about to open on Broadway in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Undaunted, the show went on without an audience to be captured on film and is now streaming on Netflix. Diana will open on Broadway for live audiences later this month.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE CONNOR PALACE The last of our five historic theaters to be built in the 1920s, the Connor Palace celebrates its 99th anniversary this month. The Connor Palace welcomed its first audiences on November 6, 1922 and was a favorite stop among performers on the vaudeville circuit due to amenities like a drying room and putting green in the dressing room tower!
MURAL UNVEILED IN THE DISTRICT Earlier this month, a new work of art was unveiled in the Playhouse Square District in collaboration with Ingenuity Cleveland, Union Club Foundation, Playhouse Square and United Way of Greater Cleveland. Commissioned by Myles Garrett, the mural, located on the facade of the United Way of Greater Cleveland building on historic Euclid Avenue, depicts Myles Garrett and his grandmother — someone beloved and instrumental in his life. We are happy to have this beautiful work of art housed in the Playhouse Square District.
DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS 2021-2022 SCHOOLS CONFIRMED Each year, four under-resourced elementary schools in Northeast Ohio are selected from a pool of applicants to participate in the Disney Musicals in Schools program, presented by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, through Playhouse Square. Over the course of 17 weeks, professional Teaching Artists guide school teachers through the process of mounting a musical with student performers, culminating in a 30-minute Disney KIDS Musical. Students develop self-confidence, practice collaboration and strengthen speaking and reading skills while learning musical theater techniques and teachers receive the training necessary to continue a tradition of theater education for years to come. 2021-2022 schools are: Patrick Henry School, Campus International School, Garfield School and Marion Sterling School.

MAKING MEMORIES, INSPIRING PERFORMANCE NOT ALL PLAYHOUSE SQUARE “STARS” ARE ON STAGE! The valuable group of Playhouse Square volunteers, known as the “RedCoats,” because of their red blazers, are comprised of 2,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the theater and a desire to give back to the community. RedCoats believe so strongly in what Playhouse Square contributes to our community that they are willing to pledge their time and talents to every facet of Playhouse Square. Most volunteer at the 1,000+ performances we host each year — but many are also behind the scenes. What do RedCoats receive in return? They: …make new friends …make a contribution to the arts …feel appreciated …have fun as a valued member of the Playhouse Square “family” RedCoats must be able to make weekly commitments to volunteer 4 to 5 hours per shift. Matinee show crews may be scheduled anytime between 9 a.m. –5 p.m. Evening crews between 5:30 –11 p.m. Volunteers pick the best day and time to fit their schedule. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team! Playhouse Square expects the same high standards of professionalism from its volunteers as it does from its full-time staff members. More information on becoming a RedCoat is available at playhousesquare.org/volunteer.

TOM ADLER HONORED WITH FALCO AWARD
P
layhouse Square presented the Falco Award to Tom Adler on September 1 at the President’s Dinner outside in the beautiful Biergarten at Hofbräuhaus Cleveland. Tom has served on the Playhouse Square Board of Trustees since 1994 and held the role of chairman from 2006 to 2009. During this time, he collaborated with Art Falco, then President & CEO, to orchestrate the formation of what is now Playhouse Square Real Estate Services. He was vital in nurturing the partnerships between Playhouse Square and major organizations such as Cleveland State, ideastream, and Cleveland Play House. Finally, he helped lead both of Playhouse Square’s recent capital campaigns, The Power of Three and Advancing the Legacy. With an abundance of appreciation and gratitude, we thank Tom and his wife, Joanie, for their decades of support and their unwavering commitment to Playhouse Square’s mission.

he musical The Prom takes us to the time in our lives where we began to transition from teenager to adulthood. Whether it was five or fifty years ago, or has yet to arrive, the rite of passage that is senior prom is a milestone in many of our lives. With my glittering tiara and long white dress, along with my prom date in his spiffy tuxedo, we were off for the most highly anticipated night of our lives — the senior prom. In addition to donning our formal wear, everyone was wearing a big smile. We were united in our glee. This rite of passage at St. Francis Borgia included our parents. They too attended the dance, then escorted us to Mass and afterwards we ate a late dinner together. Our theme, The Emerald City, made creative use of green paint on cardboard, with vibrant yellow sponge prints to simulate a stone façade. Our medieval-inspired castle was topped with two not-quitestraight turrets and was complete with a gatehouse, through which we made our grand entrance. The crowning touch to our enchanting kingdom was a slowly rotating mirror ball. With the lights strategically dimmed along with a healthy dose of air-freshener, the essence and look of our school’s gymnasium was transformed into something magical. And so was the Class of ’74. Proms, short for promenades, were originally rooted in colleges and universities. Eventually, the tradition was taken on by high schoolers to recognize their emergence into a new phase of their lives. Although these traditions in some instances were considered specifically exclusionary, the intent for us was to celebrate our twelve years together before going off to new adventures. Prom, like other rites of passage, can be a time to shape or confirm your identity. The Prom, based on a true story, explores what can happen when a community’s norms are challenged by an individual who claims her identity and finds support from an unexpected and unlikely place. With a big heart and plenty of laughs, The Prom is the perfect return to BWY in CLE.

100 YEARS. This place. This theater. This stage. These seats. A century of souls came before you. Witnessing performances that literally made time stand still. Their presence is still here... Can you feel it? They’re pushing us forward. Telling us to endure. This place. It was built to last. It’s seen a lot over the years. And it’s still here. And you’re still here. 100 years being together, Leaving your cares at the door. Waiting for the dimming of the lights. That moment that says... you are home.
WELCOME BACK.
