DEAR FRIENDS

Amy Brady

N

ovember 12 is National Philanthropy Day, when people worldwide come together in celebration of the impactful work done to make a difference in the communities we call home. While the word philanthropy may conjure images of benefactors and donations, its true meaning is “acts or gifts that support human welfare.” Closer to home at Playhouse Square, those acts and gifts take on many forms. We see philanthropy working not just for one day, but 365 days a year through the generosity of valued donors. Playhouse Square also sees the impact of the “philanthropy of time,” from our more than 2,000-plus Red Coat volunteers who give their time freely (last year to the tune of 175,246 hours) to maintain Playhouse Square’s quality of service to the community. This month, as families gather on Thanksgiving Day, the Playhouse Square family will give special thanks for our donors, sponsors, partners, volunteers, resident companies, entertainers, staff and you, our guests. Together, the interaction of this “family” makes Playhouse Square a premier performing arts center, a champion of arts education and an economic engine that continues to positively impact our local community. If Playhouse Square is already a part of your personal philanthropy, thank you! If not, we hope you will consider giving what you can as a donor at any level or as part of your financial and estate planning through our Muse Society. Or, give of your time to our not-for-profit mission by becoming a volunteer RedCoat. And, as we celebrate the 97th anniversary of the Connor Palace this month, it is fitting to note that without philanthropy, this historic venue and its sister Playhouse Square theaters would never have been saved and restored — leaving Cleveland without a great treasure. The Playhouse Square Board and staff join me in thanking you for your ongoing patronage and wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

Best wishes,

Amy Brady Chair, Playhouse Square Board

SETTING THE STAGE

for success

We believe that all Cleveland youth should have access to high-quality arts education. Through the generosity of our donors, we have invested more than $5 million since 2016 to scale up neighborhood-based programs that now serve 3,000 youth year-round in music, dance, theater, photography, literary arts and curatorial mastery. That’s setting the stage for success. Find your passion, and partner with the Cleveland Foundation to make your greatest charitable impact.

t’s showtime! Welcome to the 2019-2020 KeyBank Broadway Series at Playhouse Square! As Cleveland’s hometown bank, KeyBank is proud to support Playhouse Square and help bring award winning theatrical performances to our city as a part of the KeyBank Broadway Series. As one of the most recognized theater operations in the country, Playhouse Square shares our mission of helping Cleveland thrive and has proved over time to be a pillar of our great community. Similar to the many local organizations and groups that we partner with, KeyBank prides itself on being a leader in Cleveland. Our passion goes beyond the financial services we provide our clients and extends to supporting the culture and hardworking attitude that Cleveland residents embody. We understand the responsibility we have in the community to concentrate our most valuable resources, time and energy, on the lifeblood of our city — the people, and are deeply committed to stabilizing and revitalizing our neighborhoods. Through 2018, KeyBank has made community investments totaling more than $423 million in Northeast Ohio as part of our National Community Benefits Plan, which supports low to moderate income individuals and communities through community development lending for affordable housing, small business lending, mortgage lending and transformative philanthropy. We are bringing hope and opportunity to the communities where we do business and each investment that we have made in Northeast Ohio is making a difference. When our neighborhoods succeed, we all succeed. Thank you for joining us and for supporting Playhouse Square. We hope you enjoy this KeyBank Broadway Series show!

CONNOR PALACE CELEBRATES 97 CAN YOU GUESS?

What was the shortest-lived Broadway musical to win a Tony Award? It was the 1953 Carnival in Flanders that ran for a mere six performances starring Dolores Gray and John Raitt (Bonnie’s dad!). Gray did win the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical, and the show at least produced one classic standard… “Here’s That Rainy Day.”

Happy 97th birthday to our Connor Palace, which in 1970 became a “showplace” of a different kind. After the venue closed its doors July 20, 1969, the 80,000 sq. ft. space was repurposed as the International Trade & Fair…a unique trading organization. It acted as the exclusive representative for more than 300 European manufacturers with 11 offices in Europe and South America. Its ads described the space as “… our distinctive baroque showrooms, where products are displayed and business conducted in an unique continental manner.”

MAKING MEMORIES, INSPIRING PERFORMANCE NOT ALL PLAYHOUSE SQUARE “STARS” ARE ON STAGE!

playhousesquare.org

The valuable group of Playhouse Square volunteers, known as the “RedCoats,” because of their red blazers, are comprised of 2,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the theater and a desire to give back to the community. RedCoats believe so strongly in what Playhouse Square contributes to our community that they are willing to pledge their time and talents to every facet of Playhouse Square. Most volunteer at the 1,000+ performances we host each year — but many are also behind the scenes. What do RedCoats receive in return? They: …make new friends …make a contribution to the arts …feel appreciated …have fun as a valued member of the Playhouse Square “family” RedCoats must be able to make weekly commitments to volunteer 4 to 5 hours per shift. Matinee show crews may be scheduled anytime between 9 a.m. –5 p.m. Evening crews between 5:30 –11 p.m. Volunteers pick the best day and time to fit their schedule. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team! Playhouse Square expects the same high standards of professionalism from its volunteers as it does from its full-time staff members. More information on becoming a RedCoat is available at playhousesquare.org/volunteer.

PLAYHOUSE SQUARE PRESIDENT’S DINNER

playhousesquare.org playhousesquare.org

In September, Playhouse Square honored Jon H. Outcalt with the 2019-2020 Falco Award, formerly known as the President’s Award at the annual President’s Dinner. The Playhouse Square Falco Award honors members of the Northeast Ohio community whose leadership, perseverance and dedication have contributed to the success of Playhouse Square. This year’s recipient, Jon Outcalt, has served on the Playhouse Square Board of Trustees since 1983 and was chair from 1996-2000. Among his many contributions to Playhouse Square throughout the years, he oversaw the acquisition of and campaign to renovate and re-open the Allen Theatre in 1998. Outcalt has also generously supported the re-imagination of the Allen Theatre in 2011 as a space for Cleveland Play House and Cleveland State University. We are grateful for Jon, and his wife Jane’s continued support of Playhouse Square.

PROGRAM NOTE

“O

Gina Vernaci

nce, not too long ago, a group of musicians came to Israel from Egypt. You probably didn’t hear about it. It wasn’t very important.” That is how The Band’s Visit welcomes us into this gently told story of life in a desert town — a place where the day’s highlight may include staring at the pay phone waiting for it to ring. Perhaps it may not seem important, but the fact is, this is how most of us spend our time. Life generally can be a series of non-events. And even when those disruptions turn into a momentous occasion — such as the 7,000 unexpected visitors to Gander, Newfoundland, as told in Come From Away — your day usually reverts back to the unremarkable pulse that is at the heart of it all. Many of us can relate to a flight when some unexpected events — weather, congestion or mechanical issues — have impacted taking off or landing. As the situation unfolds, a mild show of impatience sweeps over some of our fellow passengers as though our emotions could provide the fuel to set things in motion. Others simply find ways to pass the time. Despite the circumstances in these moments, our ear buds come off as our curiosity kicks into action. Our initial instinct is to gather information on how the brunt of the pending trouble may impact us. That is a familiar scenario. Perhaps less common is being stuck in a remote location of Israel. I did, however, have such an experience.I had the opportunity to fly to Israel on a cultural mission sponsored by the Jewish Federation — a trip planned to prelude the 50th anniversary of the founding of Israel in 1998. The goal was to expose us to the many artistic wonders of this intriguing country that could be available to tour the United States. We were squired about in a van, traveling to the grottos of the Lebanon border, a kibbutz staffed by dancers and south to the Dead Sea. Our week concluded in Tel Aviv with a night of theater. It was mystical. However, our departure was delayed by a serious injury to one of our travel mates. We were whisked to a medical facility in what seemed like a remote location. By dawn, our patient was released and we were on our way back to our Tel Aviv hotel. The kindness shown by the desk clerk at our hotel was like a life preserver, as we returned to our rooms to sleep and assess our next steps. This individual’s empathy was a beacon of goodwill I will never forget. Dramatizing the 2007 Israeli film, The Band’s Visit, for the stage was the vision of native Clevelander, Orin Wolf. Although the story is told through the experience of an Egyptian band that, through a series of miscommunications, lands in a small town in Israel for the night with no way out, it is also about the openness of strangers to welcome each other into their world. Orin told me it is the characters’ empathy that inspired him to bring this to life as a musical. What you may not realize is this production is about each of us. You need not travel to Tel Aviv for the experience, try turning to the stranger sitting next to you in the theater to ask how their day went. Although the ensuing conversation may not make the evening news, the human connection may be as sweet as a Chet Baker solo. Enjoy,

Gina Vernaci President & CEO
