DEAR FRIENDS
W
Gina Vernaci
elcome back to Playhouse Square! How we have missed live performance and you, who are now part of history. Thank you for being a guest at the first show to take place on a Playhouse Square stage in 15 months, the joyful hit The Choir of Man. Our historic theaters, including the Mimi Ohio, were built 100 years ago in the wake of the last pandemic. Audiences lined up around the block when the theaters opened, eager to gather for a lively, shared experience. Coming together for live performances will help us bond as a community and leave our cares behind for an hour or two as we begin our careful reemergence from the current pandemic. Equally important, your ticket purchase helps us put people back to work: on stage, backstage, behind the scenes, in the lobby, in the office and at nearby businesses. As stewards of our neighborhood, we care not only for the theaters but for the surrounding area as well. To prepare for your arrival, with the guidance and support of Brian Zimmerman & Kelly Coffman at Cleveland Metroparks, NOPEC and the Playhouse Square District Development Corporation, we have completed neighborhood beautification projects that we encourage you to enjoy, accompanied by a bite to eat or a drink, with your friends before or after the show. Despite the challenges of this past year, I am proud to say that we remained true to our not-for-profit mission, a key component of which is our education programming. Not only did we find ways to continue many of our programs online, we were able to reach more students with our performances for young audiences than ever before! This was made possible by the generosity of our donors and marketing partners, to whom we are most grateful. Enjoy the show, knowing that we are so very glad to see you. Thank you for staging your comeback with us.
With gratitude,
Gina Vernaci President & CEO, Playhouse Square

Broadway fans got their first peek at the highly anticipated film adaption of Dear Evan Hansen when the film’s trailer dropped online recently. Tony winner Ben Platt will reprise his role as Evan for the film along with Baldwin Wallace alum Colton Ryan as Connor Murphy. Ryan understudied the part on Broadway and even performed at the 2018 Broadway Launch event singing “Waving Through a Window” from Dear Evan Hansen. The film also stars Julianne Moore and Amy Adams and opens in cinemas September 24 from Universal Studios.
The TODAY Show’s Al Roker and NBC’s Sam Brock visited Playhouse Square as part of their “Reopening America” series. In addition to chatting with Playhouse Square President & CEO Gina Vernaci, Al also lit up the GE Chandelier and noted how the restoration and reopening of Playhouse Square led Cleveland’s renaissance in the 1980s. Al would know as, at the time, he was working at WKYC as our local weatherman on Channel 3.
In October 2020, Playhouse Square completed the largest residential project undertaken in downtown Cleveland in 40 years. Standing 396 feet tall across the street from the Connor Palace, The Lumen apartment tower offers residents commanding views of the city and Lake Erie, thoughtfully curated amenities and a spacious environment. The Lumen was chosen as the building’s name to reflect the energy surrounding Playhouse Square as well as the importance of light in theater and in the Playhouse Square District.

The valuable group of Playhouse Square volunteers, known as the “RedCoats,” because of their red blazers, are comprised of 2,000 men and women of all ages and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for the theater and a desire to give back to the community. RedCoats believe so strongly in what Playhouse Square contributes to our community that they are willing to pledge their time and talents to every facet of Playhouse Square. Most volunteer at the 1,000+ performances we host each year — but many are also behind the scenes. What do RedCoats receive in return? They: …make new friends …make a contribution to the arts …feel appreciated …have fun as a valued member of the Playhouse Square “family” RedCoats must be able to make weekly commitments to volunteer 4 to 5 hours per shift. Matinee show crews may be scheduled anytime between 9 a.m. –5 p.m. Evening crews between 5:30 –11 p.m. Volunteers pick the best day and time to fit their schedule. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team! Playhouse Square expects the same high standards of professionalism from its volunteers as it does from its full-time staff members. More information on becoming a RedCoat is available at playhousesquare.org/volunteer.

PROGRAM NOTE
David Greene
O
n January 14, 2018, I stood shoulder to shoulder with 150 performing arts professionals in an overcrowded room at the Old Castle Pub on W. 54th Street in New York City. We were all there to see a “pint-sized” taste of the U.S. tour of The Choir of Man as they were set to hit the road the following season. I wasn’t prepared for what an absolute party that showcase turned into. The infectious harmonies, witty dialogue and effortless choreography had me racing to the front of the line to secure a date for Cleveland. You could say that they had me at “Welcome,” the first word of their first song, “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses. After two sold-out, intoxicating performances at the Mimi Ohio Theatre in 2019 and 2020, we are beyond excited to welcome The Choir of Man back to Cleveland. It has been more than 450 days since the last note was sung, the last leap was danced, and the last monologue was delivered on our beloved stages. More importantly, it has been that long since we have all been together to participate in such a shared experience; to laugh together, to cry together and to feel the beat of the bass hit us squarely in the chest. Welcome back, indeed! Over the past five months, we have been meeting regularly with the entire creative team towards one common goal: to make the return of live entertainment at Playhouse Square as memorable as possible. We didn’t want to just open the doors; we wanted to blast them off their hinges with the perfect welcome back event. With the help of Cleveland Play House, IATSE Local 27, and some very talented local scenic artists, The Choir of Man has a brand new look and sound. We’ve added a second story to the pub set and given the show a live band to fill out the glorious set list. In The Choir of Man, nine singing, dancing, and storytelling lads, along with their mates in the band, welcome us to their pub, “The Jungle.” The Jungle is a place where all are welcome, community is encouraged and support for one another is paramount. We see that it is a place where our individuality shines, our spirits are lifted and our hope for humanity flourishes. As Denis, the Narrator, says near the beginning of the show: “ If this isn’t a place we come to realize our dreams, it’s at least a place we come to share them. Share anything, really. Lick our wounds and recharge. You can leave your woes at the door, or you can bring ‘em in and slap them on the table. Or sing about them, in our case.” While only a few of my pub experiences involved me singing (unfortunately for anyone within earshot), thankfully, all of them have included good conversation with friends and strangers, revelry, and comradery. No matter what brings you to The Jungle tonight, we are glad you are here. Enjoy a pint with the lads and welcome back to the theater!
Cheers,
David Greene Senior VP of Programming
