It encourages students to question, consider and refine their understanding of the social and natural world around us. Students learn how to learn, helping them to interact effectively with the learning environments they encounter and encouraging them to value learning as an essential and integral part of their everyday lives. All kindergartens and primary schools follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme. Learning is taught through broad themes, as dedicated units of inquiry. This approach connects a number of traditional subjects, such as literacy, maths and science, into an interrelated and rich learning environment for students. A non-profit, bilingual Waldorf school for ages 5 and up. Since September 2017.

Curriculum: Waldorf Curriculum: Rudolf Steiner gave a series of “indications” on pedagogical topics in lectures and writings during his lifetime. These insights inform the unique and distinctive Waldorf curriculum framework in the following ways: the curriculum unfolds over time, is wide and richly experiential; the curriculum takes its cue from the development of the child. It is midwife to the emerging individuality, rather than suits of clothes into which the child must be made to fit; the curriculum relies upon and encourages the creativity of teachers. The innate flexibility and resilience enables it to be adapted for a variety of settings, languages, and cultures.

Principal: Mr. Will Tong

We are a private Primary school for international students, overlooking the stunning Silvermine Bay of Mui Wo, Lantau Island. At Silvermine Bay School, we consider personal, social and emotional education to be equally as important as academic education. We believe our students should have opportunities to learn about themselves as developing individuals and as members of their communities. We believe that everyone has natural talents which, once discovered, give them the confidence to aim high in other areas. The heart to a successful school is building and maintaining good relationships – between students and teachers, teachers and parents, parents and staff and between ourselves and our surrounding community. We place great emphasis on good relationships and believe that it builds up the well-being of our school members. Students who are happy and enjoy being at school are far more likely to do well.

Curriculum: UK National Curriculum (EYFS), School-based Mandarin Curriculum

Silvermine Bay School follows a modified English National Curriculum, ensuring that our curriculum is relevant for children growing up in Hong Kong, while also emphasizing the multicultural diversity of the world we live in. Similarly, our Reception Class follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), combined with supplementary resources to bring relevancy to our students of the place in which they live, simultaneously building a foundation to prepare them for the rigours of our full primary curriculum. The curriculum includes: English, Mathematics, Mandarin, Science, History and Geography, Nature Studies, Computing (included Coding and Robotics), Art & Design, Design & Technology, Music, Physical Education (PE), Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). We focus on teaching students how to make connections between subjects, enhancing their understanding of how their studies apply to the real world. An example of this is the relationship between Maths, Computing, Coding and Robotics. We emphasize the growth mindset and equip students with ‘learning how to learn’ skills. Mornings focus on the core academic subjects of Maths, English and Mandarin. In the afternoons, all subjects are activity-based. Children study Music, Art & Design and PSHE three days per week, while Sports and PE are taught two days per week. Students have lots of fun and have multiple opportunities to express their ideas and show their creativity. Our whole school approach provides the opportunity for students to mingle and spend time together during morning and lunch breaks. We are a small school with a family feeling where all teachers and students know and support each other.

Facilities: Library, Art Room, ICT Lab (Information and Communication Technology), Sports Hall

Features: Our school’s features include a library for both the upper and lower primary students, we have a running space which doubles as a physical education space, our art and design room doubles as a canteen (*prior to the Covid-19 pandemic), and we have a computer lab for coding/ computing and computer design lessons and projects. Living in Mui Wo, we also have access to the local sports centre, where we host some of our PE programmes, as well as the beautiful Silvermine Bay Beach, where we also hold some of our sports programmes when the weather is fine. The International Montessori School (IMS) is a non-profit, dual-language (English and Putonghua Chinese) school providing a challenging academic curriculum in a nurturing multi-cultural learning environment. Established in 2002, the school’s mission is to enable children to develop their individual gifts in a caring, supportive and respectful community. IMS is the only accredited Montessori primary school in Greater China, serving children aged 3 to 12 years from over 40 countries. The school pioneered a unique, individually tailored Chinese curriculum based on Montessori’s multisensory and interactive approach, and is considered one of the world’s leading Montessori dual-language programmes.

Curriculum: Montessori Primary Years

IMS’ integrated curriculum meets the different development needs for the growing person, giving your child the opportunity to explore their own passions, while guiding them to develop the skills they need to be successful in school and in life. The opportunity to learn in such a natural way could be the greatest gift you can give your child. All the research about the benefits of Montessori on the developing child’s brain is borne out each day in the IMS classrooms – and at home. The children are quickly calmer at home and proud of what they are doing at school. Parents are hearing (some report for the first time) “Let me do it myself!” from children who are excited by new found abilities and independence. Our older children are investigating areas of interest and asking intelligent, imaginative questions which are making a difference in our learning community. Each year we watch our oldest children blossom into considerate, thoughtful, creative and deeply able leaders, who are eager to take on new responsibilities.
