Respect For Others

The Bible encourages all of us to treat others in the same way that we would like them to treat us. When this is our attitude, we help to create a community where everyone can enjoy safety, security, cooperative learning and freedom from all forms of harassment.

This is the kind of community we foster at PLC Sydney and each person has an important part to play in maintaining it.

All members of the College community are expected to relate to one another in ways that will ensure that every person is able to:

• be respected and valued as an individual

• feel safe and secure

• be free to work and learn in a positive environment

• be treated fairly

• be free from bullying

• have his/her privacy and property respected

• feel free to seek and accept appropriate help and support when it is needed.

The College considers that behaviour which does not demonstrate respect for these basic needs and freedoms of others is unacceptable.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

This handbook has been designed as a quick reference guide for our Boarding families and students.

Please make yourself familiar with the contents so that both you and your daughter will be equipped to move through the year with relative ease. This booklet has answers to many but not all questions related to boarding life. It normally takes a full year to feel you know almost everything there is to know at PLC Sydney.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF BOARDING

Welcome to PLC Sydney’s boarding community. We’re so excited to have you with us, and we hope that your time in boarding becomes a valuable extension of your home life, filled with growth and new friendships.

Adjusting to a new place and new routines can take time, but they’re designed to create a safe and happy environment where you can thrive. Along the way, you’ll discover countless opportunities to challenge yourself, learn, and flourish. Our dedicated staff is here to guide and encourage you every step of the way during your time here.

Boarding life is a unique experience—a chance to live in a diverse, global village where you’ll share stories, learn from others, and grow together. We encourage you to approach every moment with an open mind, show respect for those around you, and actively engage in the community. Taking responsibility for your actions, practising kindness, and building strong values of independence and positivity will enrich your experience and ensure you settle in smoothly.

Your boarding journey is what you make of it! Approach this new chapter with enthusiasm and a spirit of adventure. Dive into the many opportunities available to you in the Boarding House and College community.

The more you participate and connect with others, the more at home you’ll feel. Remember, open communication is key to a happy, thriving Boarding House, so don’t hesitate to share your thoughts or reach out to staff and fellow boarders. We are here to ensure that your boarding experience is positive, enriching, and full of growth.

Together, we’ll build a vibrant and inclusive community where every individual, including you, is a valued and integral part of what makes boarding at PLC Sydney so special.

Our Proud Boarding History

Nestled at the heart of PLC Sydney’s Senior School grounds, the Boarding House has been a warm and welcoming home for boarders since 1888.

Our first three students were boarders, and today their names proudly grace the wings of the Boarding House [Mance, Taylor & Mackenzie], which has been in its current location since 1890.

We’re proud of our rich history of welcoming students from diverse cultural backgrounds, creating a truly global and inclusive environment that enriches our community.

Our Boarding House accommodates up to 55 boarders from the city, country, and overseas, ranging from Year 7 to Year 12. Boarders quickly find their place in our close-knit community. Younger students share rooms, while Year 12s enjoy their own private spaces.

The house features three cozy common areas where boarders can relax, watch movies, and enjoy time together. There’s always something to enjoy in our warm, supportive home-away-from-home.

On weekends our boarders use some facilities in the school like the gymnasium to play a game of Saturday night basketball, volleyball or badminton, plus much more.

Preparing for Boarding School

To ensure a smooth and positive transition into boarding life, it's a great idea for families to chat about a few key topics before arriving at PLC Sydney:

• Balancing leisure activities with study time

• Becoming a part of co-curricular programs in the school

• Keeping up with personal hygiene, like daily showers, using deodorant, and managing menstruation

• Sleep hygiene, routines and habits that encourage good sleep practices

• Developing healthy eating habits and trying out new food tastes

• Knowing when and how to ask for help if feeling uncertain or homesick

• Understanding the safe and appropriate use of the Internet and technology

• Budgeting for each term, and safe use of tap-and-go or Internet banking

• Reflecting on the decision to join the boarding community and the exciting opportunities ahead.

It’s also helpful for students to build some practical skills to help prepare for arrival to boarding :

• Making her own bed

• Keeping her belongings organised and maintaining a tidy space

• Being open to making new friends and engaging with others

• Feeling comfortable starting conversations with new people

• Learning how to do her laundry, separate colours, what does and does not go into a clothes drier and ironing

• Finding ways to enjoy quiet time and entertain herself.

A-Z Handbook Guide

AABSENT FROM SCHOOL

For general short absences, if the absence is foreseeable, please submit a Special Leave request with details of the requested absence in the leave notes. If your daughter is ill and cannot return at the specified leave time, please phone or email the Boarding House and let the staff know as soon as possible. This helps the Boarding staff communicate with the Day school regarding your daughter's absence.

Years 10-12 students must present a doctor’s certificate if absent from any assessment or examination, and Year 11-12 boarders need to be in the house the night prior to any exam or assessment.

For early leave from school due to travel, an early leave notification is required. See the Absences tile on PLACES.

For any other requests for absence from the Boarding House, an email explaining the leave is to be sent to the Director of Boarding.

ACTIVITIES

In our boarding house, students will find a vibrant community rich with opportunities for personal growth and friendship. Boarders can engage in a diverse range of activities designed to enhance their educational experience and build strong friendships.

On weekends, regular social events such as movie nights, game tournaments, cultural celebrations, ice-skating trips, market visits, ferry rides around the Harbour, and bowling sessions are just some of the weekend activities the students enjoy. These activities help provide a well-rounded life at school.

Boarders are invited by other schools to attend social events, and these are included in the social calendar as often as possible. Students need funds to cover the costs of general activities. We organise several special events throughout the year that include the entire boarding community. A levy is added to the boarding fees each semester to cover the cost of these events, such as theatre visits, year group activities, special dinners, graduation, and gifts.

The social calendar is developed each term with a variety of events and outings in discussion with all the boarders and staff. Sometimes changes are made to the calendar due to inclement weather or surprise invitations to a social event.

BALARM CLOCKS

Students in Years 7 to 11 who wish to wake up before 7:00 am for activities such as early sports or training are encouraged to bring a battery-operated alarm clock that sits on their bedside cabinet for easy disarming. We find it is best to place the clock beside the student's bed to ensure it does not disturb roommates. Students waking early need to prepare before bed the previous night and place their clothes in the corridor for changing in the early morning. This allows the bedroom to remain quiet so their roommates can continue to sleep until normal wake-up time.

BANK ACCOUNTS

Students are encouraged to take charge of their own banking and financial arrangements, which should be set up and activated by parents before they arrive at the Boarding House. If cash is required, an automatic teller machine is conveniently located in Croydon, and full banking services are available in Burwood. Students are advised to keep track of activity on their accounts to help prevent any fraudulent activity. If a student notices activity other than their own, they should inform boarding staff immediately, and staff will assist with contacting the bank. The earlier this is found, the better the outcome will hopefully be.

BEDROOMS

Each student is encouraged to take pride in managing her belongings and maintaining the neatness of her bedroom. It's important to consider the comfort of roommates by keeping the space orderly. Each morning, staff check every room before students leave for school. They will ensure beds are made, desks are tidy, floors are clear, and garbage bins are emptied. Staff may also ask for windows and curtains to be opened and all electrical equipment turned off. Letting in fresh air and sunshine helps the room feel fresh on return after school. Since bedrooms are shared spaces for relaxation, showing respect for each other is essential, and a clean room helps create a sense of order.

BEDDING / LINEN

Every boarder is provided with a pillow, bed sheets, bath towels, and pillowcases, which are laundered weekly. Bed linen and towels are changed on Thursday mornings. Students will remove sheets and towels and place them into laundry boxes. Additionally, each boarder is encouraged to bring her own doona and two covers to personalise her space.

BEDTIMES

Lights go out at:

Year 7 9:00 pm

Year 8 9:30 pm

Year 9 9:30 pm

Year 10 10:00 pm

Year 11 10:00 pm (in rooms, quietly preparing for bed), 10:30 pm (lights out)

Year 12 10:00 pm (in rooms, quietly working)

Recognising the importance of sleep for health and well-being, all students need to settle promptly at night, as research indicates that adolescents need at least nine hours of sleep per night. More information about the benefits of sleep is readily available online. Additionally, students are reminded to wear appropriate sleepwear each night to ensure comfort and maintain sleep hygiene. Please refer to the packing list for sleepwear.

BIRTHDAYS

Birthdays are a time to celebrate and a joyful occasion in the boarding community! Students have the opportunity to celebrate their special day during dinner with their choice of dessert or cake. To join in the festivities, all boarders are encouraged to come prepared to celebrate their roommates' or friends' birthdays, either by bringing a gift or having funds available to purchase one.

CCANDLES, OIL BURNERS, CANDLE LAMPS, INCENSE

For safety and compliance with fire regulations, these items are banned from use by students at all times. If using a diffuser, please check that roommates also enjoy the same fragrance before assuming its use.

CHURCH AND RELIGIOUS SERVICES

All boarders are warmly invited to attend church services. A chapel service is held every Wednesday at the end of dinner at 6:40 pm, conducted by the College Chaplaincy team. Boarders interested in attending Sunday services or Youth Groups are encouraged to discuss options with the Director of Boarding.

COMPUTERS AND INTERNET USE: WIFI

The Boarding House is equipped with a wireless network, allowing students to access the internet from their rooms. For support purposes, all computer programs should be in English.

Students in Years 7 to 10 are required to hand in their laptops, iPads, or other internet devices at bedtime each night for safekeeping. Year 11 students need only to hand in their phones. All devices are made available after breakfast each morning. Senior boarders are encouraged to turn off their technology at bedtime to ensure a restful environment for everyone. If a senior student is finding self-regulation of technology challenging, devices will be handed in with phones to provide assistance and a good night's sleep until they are able to self-manage.

COMPLAINTS AND DISPUTES

Life is an adventure with challenges that provide growth opportunities, and open communication is key to overcoming these challenges. Students are encouraged to speak to any of the Boarding House staff about issues that concern them. Year 11 and 12 students, having likely experienced similar situations, are also ready to offer advice and support to younger students.

Parents are welcome to contact the Director of Boarding with any questions or concerns they may have. The Boarding House is committed to fostering an open, direct, and supportive approach to resolving both personal and communal challenges.

CONDUCT

Boarders are encouraged to be courteous, sensitive, and polite to each other and staff, reflecting the College's ethos and the attributes of intelligent young women. Our expectations promote common sense, cooperative living, and acceptable behaviour standards. If challenges arise, students receive a warning to help them understand the consequences of their actions and the opportunity to adjust their behaviour. Further action, appropriate to the situation, will be taken if necessary.

Detentions are assigned as needed and cannot be postponed, ensuring consistency and fairness for all boarders.

Boarders have an obligation to embrace the rights and responsibilities of all students in the school, as outlined in the Student Handbook for all students:

Rights

To be treated with respect

To work and learn in a positive environment

Responsibilities

Treat everyone with respect and discourage others from acting disrespectfully

• Respect the privacy of others

• Do not disclose personal information about others

• Do not gossip or make false claims about others

Inform responsible and appropriate others when one needs assistance with any matters

DDAY GIRLS

Boarders are encouraged to make friends with day students, as these connections can greatly enrich and broaden their school-life experience. Day friends are able to invite boarders to visit their homes and enjoy overnight stays when invited. We encourage the boarding girls to have a broad and diverse group of friends in school and to be good friends themselves. Being involved in co-curricular activities enables boarders to meet a diverse group of students across school year groups.

DRIVER TRAINING AND DRIVER LICENCES

The College has a driving instructor available and a car for all boarders to learn to drive. Driving lessons may be taken after school hours, and bookings are arranged through Gateway Reception. Tests may only be taken after school in Burwood or online. Parents or students should email or have a conversation with the Director of Boarding to discuss the process prior to booking a lesson.

DRUGS (INCLUDING TOBACCO, ALCOHOL AND VAPES)

We promote a healthy and safe environment. To support this, drugs, smoking, vaping, and drinking alcohol are prohibited. Those who uphold this policy contribute to our positive and supportive community. Any use of these items while boarding will be addressed by the Principal and disciplinary actions will be taken.

EEARLY MORNING WAKE-UP

Boarders with early sporting commitments are encouraged to take responsibility for waking up and arriving at their activities on time. To ensure a smooth start, please discuss your plans with staff the night before and have all necessary items outside your bedroom, ready for early departure. This helps maintain a peaceful environment for your roommates. Movement within the room should be minimised before the official wake-up time of 7:00 am.

ELECTRICAL ITEMS

To ensure safety and comfort in the Boarding House, students are encouraged to bring approved electrical items. Electric blankets, cooking devices, electric kettles, personal heaters, steam irons, and fans are not permitted. Other electrical items may be brought in after being checked and tagged by staff at the beginning of each year. Please ensure that any international power devices comply with Australian standards, as the College supports only those that meet these requirements. International students may request adaptors from senior staff if needed.

EMERGENCY DRILLS

Emergency drills are conducted each semester. Boarders are instructed on how to respond to emergencies.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURE IN THE EVENT OF A FIRE OR LOCKDOWN

Students are to follow the procedure applicable to the emergency as per the training given at the start of each semester.

For Fire Alarms:

• Alert staff.

• Alert students.

• Move quickly to the appointed assembly area.

• Quietly line up in year groups as names are marked off on rolls.

• Follow directions of College staff or emergency personnel.

• Stay calm.

For Lockdowns:

Listen for instructions and follow procedures.

FFITNESS

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for developing brains, bodies, moods, and well-being. PLC Sydney provides many activities to assist in this area. Students can attend morning or afternoon sessions in the weights room for supervised sessions. They can also join the Aquatic Centre swimming program, which has a fee. Details are available from the Aquatic Centre.

FOOD

Students are welcome to keep sealed and clearly labelled food in the Boarding House refrigerators to maintain good hygiene. For safety reasons, any hot food or drinks brought into the Boarding House must have a sealed lid. Afternoon teas and general snacks can be eaten in the Boarding House, provided they are not excessively fragrant. We encourage hot food to be eaten in the boarders' dining room at all times.

As students can visit Burwood, Ashfield, or Croydon after school to purchase food or personal items, food deliveries are not encouraged.

FURNITURE

Year 7-11 bedrooms are arranged to ensure the safest and most effective use of shared space. Students are asked to keep the furniture in its designated position, with personalisation achieved through decorations.

Year 12 boarders may personalise their rooms by moving their beds and desks with assistance. If additional furniture is brought, it must be taken home at the end of the year.

GUARDIANS

Interstate and overseas boarders must have a Sydney-based guardian or host family to support them when they are not in the boarding environment. Guardians should be over twenty-five years old, fluent in English, and readily contactable by phone. They must be available to care for the student in emergencies, such as illness.

The Coordinator of Overseas Students provides a detailed outline of guardian responsibilities for international boarders, ensuring clarity and support.

HHOLIDAYS

School holidays are wonderful opportunities for boarders to spend quality time with family and friends. Boarders are encouraged to reconnect with their family homes, especially during the first few holidays, to maintain normalcy. These early holidays can be challenging, and students might feel reluctant to return to school. With support and encouragement, this transition becomes easier over time.

To foster a sense of belonging and responsibility, boarders are encouraged to pack their rooms at the end of each term and participate in end-of-term activities.

When returning from holidays, boarders should arrive at the Boarding House between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm, ready for dinner. International students should return based on their flight arrival times. This allows students to reconnect with friends, unpack, and prepare for the upcoming term.

The Boarding House is closed during holidays, so holiday arrangements must be made one month in advance. Flights should be booked at least six months ahead. For requests to leave or return outside the normal calendar dates, complete a Special Leave Form from the Deputy Principal’s office early in the term.

BOARDERS’ FREE WEEKENDS

Boarders' free weekends are scheduled in the middle of the term when a public holiday occurs, allowing students to leave school after 3:00 pm on the designated date.

• Students may be collected from the Boarding House between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm unless alternative arrangements are made.

• Return times are between 4:30 pm and 8:30 pm on the return day, or by 8:00 am on the following school day if prior arrangements are made with the Director of Boarding.

• NSW Government Country Buses are approved transport for boarding students, and staff will accommodate their departure and arrival times.

IHOMESICKNESS

Homesickness is a natural and healthy expression of a daughter’s love for her family and home. It is a normal process of separation and varies widely among students. Parents may also feel sadness when their daughter goes away to school, reflecting their deep care and concern.

If homesickness becomes a concern, especially when expressed tearfully over repeated conversations, parents are encouraged to reach out to Boarding House staff. Often, students share their worries with parents but enjoy a cheerful evening with friends, which can leave parents feeling uneasy. For support, contact the Director of Boarding or Senior Boarding staff.

INSURANCE

Boarders are encouraged to take responsibility for the safety of their personal belongings. The College cannot provide insurance for personal belongings. Parents should arrange insurance for valuable items like laptops and other personal belongings.

INTERNATIONAL BOARDERS

All international students receive the Information for Overseas Students publication prior to commencement. The Coordinator of Overseas Students will meet regularly with students and is available for support as needed.

JJEWELLERY

For safety, students should leave expensive jewellery at home. Precious items brought to school must be securely locked in the student's cupboard when not in use.

Jewellery is not permitted with the school uniform. The only visible body piercing allowed is one set of earrings. Tattoos are not permitted at any time.

LLAUNDRY AND DRY CLEANING

Boarding House laundries are equipped with washing machines and dryers. Parents are encouraged to teach their daughters how to wash their clothes before arrival to ensure they feel confident using the facilities.

LEAVE PROCESS

SIGNING OUT

Boarders must be signed in and out of the Boarding House by a staff member whenever they take leave. Parents and guardians are asked to come into the Boarding House foyer to personally collect or return boarders.

Online leave is managed through Reach. Information on how to use the Leave program will be emailed to parents and guardians. Access Reach via the PLC Places Log-in on the Boarding Tile (https://places.plc.sydney/).

Students may enjoy afternoon tea or dinner with family members with approval from the Director of Boarding.

TAXIS AND UBERS

Travel by taxis or Ubers is not permitted for boarders. Refer to the Boarding Tile for alternate transport options.

LEADERSHIP

Leadership opportunities within the boarding community allow students to develop essential life skills such as responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving. Our boarding house is not just a place to live; it is a supportive and dynamic environment where students thrive and develop these essential skills.

Leadership begins in the junior years, and we expect all students to have the capacity to lead at some stage during their boarding experience. Leadership is not just a formal position but a way of stepping in—both formally and informally—when needed to assist and guide others.

In Semester 2 of Year 11, the boarders and boarding staff vote for the Captain and Prefects for the year ahead. These positions come together to serve various aspects of the Boarding House. The Captain and Prefects also sit on the College Leadership

Team. All Year 12 students are viewed as leaders and are expected to demonstrate maturity, compassion, understanding, and support for younger students. The Year 12 cohort works together for the benefit of the boarding community.

MMAIL

All mail and deliveries are to be addressed to: Boarding House, 34-36 Young St, Croydon NSW 2132.

Parcels and letter mail delivered in the morning will be delivered to the Boarding House in the afternoon. Staff will leave parcels on the staircase for collection after school.

Notification on a parcel being delivered may take another day to reach the Boarding House.

While the College strives to offer a balanced diet, please note that there are limits to accommodating highly specialised diet plans.

MEAL TIMES

We value meal times as an important part of the day, and we encourage all students to attend. For weekday breakfast, students should wear their full school uniform. Dinner attire should always be neat and, on certain occasions, formal. Acceptable dinner dress includes the full school uniform or good casual clothes such as skirts, dresses, trousers, presentable jeans, and suitable shoes. Pyjamas and rubber thongs are not considered acceptable attire at meal times.

DINING ETIQUETTE

Students are encouraged to quietly line up outside the dining room.

• Year 12 enters first, followed by Year 11, and so on.

• Students stand quietly by their designated chair until grace is said.

• Each table is invited to collect their meal in an orderly manner.

• Late arrivals should present themselves at the head table and politely excuse themselves before sitting down.

To ensure smooth operations, all students are expected to attend meals unless prior arrangements have been made with the Director of Boarding. Students are not permitted to remain in the upstairs area during meal times.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS

The College Nurse will arrange all local medical, optical, dental, orthodontic, chiropractic, and physiotherapy appointments requested by parents. Students should attend specialist medical appointments with a parent, guardian, or relative, as these often require detailed information, and specialists are generally located outside the College’s local area.

International students should ensure they have the means to cover medical fees at the time of their visit.

MEDICAL DOCUMENTATION

The College's online Student Medical Consent form must be completed prior to entry into the College. This document should be updated annually or as medical changes occur. This assists the College nursing staff and senior boarding staff in managing medical care effectively, particularly after holiday periods. All medical information is treated confidentially.

Parents are required to advise Boarding or Nursing staff of any health or safety risks so appropriate measures can be taken.

If your daughter has any special requirements, such as allergies, asthma, or special dietary needs, please provide detailed information along with an up-to-date Medical Plan from a doctor and all prescribed in-date medication.

MEDICAL AND HEALTH ISSUES

PLC Sydney has a College Nurse on campus Monday to Friday from 8.00 am to 3.30 pm.

If a student feels unwell on a weekday, they should notify the Director of Boarding and the College Nurse. Depending on their condition, they may be admitted to the sick bay. The Health Centre is monitored only during school hours, after which senior boarding staff take over responsibility.

If a student feels unwell after hours, they should contact a boarding staff member for assistance. They can knock on the staff sleepover room door, and a staff member will assist as needed. The staff member will assess the situation and address it appropriately. Senior staff will contact the College Nurse the following morning unless urgent hospital care is required.

Any boarder unable to attend school due to illness will remain in sickbay during the school day.

If a student has an infectious disease or requires prolonged care, the College Nurse will arrange for parents or guardians to collect the student. Recovery will be managed at home following NSW Public Health guidelines.

To ensure proper medical attention, all medical forms and information should be sent to the Health Centre as soon as possible.

MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

The College Nurse or Director of Boarding will contact parents or guardians as soon as possible.

MEDICAL VACCINATIONS

The College hosts vaccinations on behalf of NSW Health for Year 7 and Year 10 students. Further information is available on the College Parent Portal. Parental consent for the immunisation program is submitted online.

MEDICARE-PRIVATE HEALTH FUNDS

At the beginning of each year, please update the Student Medical Consent and Procedure Form online, ensuring it includes an up-to-date Medicare number and accurate medical history. Overseas students should have private medical insurance.

To contact the Health Centre, email health@plc.nsw.edu.au or call (+612) 9704 5628.

MEDICATION

For safety and compliance reasons, all medication is administered by the College Nurse or Boarding House staff. Students are required to hand all medicines into the Boarding House office for proper storage. Medications must comply with the

Australian Department of Health Regulations (Pharmaceutical Branch) and be labelled in English by a doctor or pharmacist. Any items not in compliance will be safely returned to parents.

MONEY AND PERSONAL POSSESSIONS

To ensure the safety of personal possessions, we recommend handing large amounts of money, including foreign currency, to the Boarding House staff for secure storage in the Boarding House office. This helps protect your cash until needed, as the College cannot take responsibility for money or valuables left in bedrooms. All bedrooms have lockable furniture, and Year 12 students have a safe in their rooms for managing personal items.

MUSIC PRACTICE

Students are encouraged to organise their practice times with the Music Department. The Grand Piano in College Hall is available to boarders outside of school hours, and there are several areas around the College for private music practice. The private boarders’ music practice room is located under the Year 12 wing and is available between 6:00 am - 8:00 am and 3:00 pm - 5:55 pm on weekdays and weekends as requested, providing ample opportunity for practice.

OOPAL CARDS AND COUNTRY STUDENT TRAVEL PASSES

All boarders are encouraged to purchase a personal Student Opal Card with an auto top-up for convenient travel on city rail or city rail buses. For boarders travelling home each week, a School Student Opal Card can be requested from the College. If an Opal Card is not available, a credit card can be used to tap on and off; however, the cost will be for an adult. Students are always required to follow State Rail regulations and use appropriate behaviour when travelling.

Country students can apply for a Country Link Pass online. At the end of Year 10, Country students are required to reapply for their pass. Country students' Free Travel Pass is for travel between school and home only. Holiday travel on Country Buses is booked by the Director of Boarding 6 weeks prior to travel. Amendments can be made to travel

bookings 2 weeks prior to the travel date. Country passes can be used outside of holidays when requested, with some restrictions. Please seek information from the Country Link website and ask the Director of Boarding for further information if needed.

PARENT/TEACHER NIGHTS AND REPORTS

We warmly encourage parents and guardians to attend parent/teacher evenings to stay informed about their daughter’s progress. There is the capacity to have online meetings if requested if you are unable to attend. Parents are welcome to arrange a meeting with the Head of Year and teaching staff at any time during the year. Reports, including a Boarding Report, are available online twice a year.

PARENTS/GUARDIANS CONTACT DETAILS

Parents and guardians, we kindly ask you to notify the Director of Boarding if any of your contact details (including address or phone number) change. If you will be out of Sydney or Australia and unable to be reached in an emergency, please provide the name and phone number of an alternative adult for emergency contact. Thank you for helping us ensure the safety and well-being of our students.

PASSPORT, ENTRY RENEWALS AND VISAS

We encourage students' families to complete all passport and visa requirements and provide copies to the Enrolments Office and guardian. To ensure safekeeping, all overseas boarders should have their passports held in the Boarding House office. Additionally, please provide a copy of all flight details before the end of each term.

PETS

Students are welcome to have a small fish tank that requires basic care. We encourage students to take responsibility for the care and hygiene of their fish. Please remember to take your pets home during holiday periods.

SPREP (SUPERVISED HOMEWORK)

Prep is held Monday to Thursday across the afternoon and evening and is dedicated to supervised homework. During this time, students receive support from our Academic and Support Staff who are available to assist with homework and personal study. Prep is our Personal Study program where students can focus on their learning at different times, as scheduled by our Director of Academic Studies. Students are expected to use this time effectively to improve their academic skills and enjoy the process of learning.

During Prep, students are expected to work quietly. If group study is needed, staff will try to arrange a suitable space. To ensure a productive environment, mobile phones cannot be used for personal reasons during Prep. If a phone becomes a distraction, staff will hold onto it for the remainder of the session. Handbooks or the individual’s Classroom platforms are checked weekly, and if necessary, nightly. Please ensure classwork is written neatly in the handbook so staff can provide effective assistance.

Students who do club sports and co-curricular activities in the evening will have the opportunity to work around training and still complete the assigned time allotted, as time frames are across the afternoon and evening. To be well-prepared, all students should be organised and ready to do their prep each afternoon. Students need to collect all items needed from their lockers after school and bring everything required for their study program.

SAD NEWS

Boarding staff understand the sensitivity of receiving challenging and sad news over the phone when away from family. To ensure students receive the best support, parents and guardians are encouraged to contact the Principal or the Director of Boarding to be aware before informing the student. This allows staff to arrange for the student to be supported by caring staff during tough times and help boarders process information with privacy. It is preferable to share such news during daylight hours if possible rather than at bedtime. If needed, the Principal or Director of Boarding can also communicate with students on behalf of parents to provide additional support if required.

SCHOOL FUNCTIONS

All boarders are encouraged to attend certain school and boarding functions. These events are important activities that enhance your experience and foster a sense of belonging within the College community. Please make a note of these events and join in the fun! Speech Day is compulsory for all PLC Sydney students. A calendar is available on the Boarding Portal with all dates and events for Boarding. The College calendar is available on the website.

SECURITY CAMERAS

The Boarding House is equipped with security cameras on the corridor of each wing and throughout the College grounds and specified buildings to assist with safety across the campus. The cameras record images, which are stored for a short time and are reviewed only in cases involving incidents that impact the safety or well-being of boarders. For more details regarding CCTV, please refer to the Boarding tile on Places.

SPORTING AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

We highly encourage all boarders to participate in team sports and co-curricular activities. Students should arrange travel to these events with their coaches, teams, or guardians, in consultation with the Director of Boarding. The College Sports department is also able to assist and help organise travel for junior boarders. Participation in sporting teams each semester is required for all boarders. When parents are in Sydney for the weekend, we expect them to escort their daughter to and from her game to relieve the day family from this task on the weekends you are available. Organising travel to sporting events helps boarders develop independence and organisational skills. It is important for students to manage this aspect of their boarding life and to communicate with staff if any issues arise. Students in Years 10 to 12 may use public transport in groups to attend sports events on Saturdays. Please ensure that sports leave requests are submitted by Thursday evening.

STORAGE

We kindly request that all boarders leave their rooms spotless and tidy before departing for the holidays. There is limited storage space available for personal items throughout the year. Thank you for helping keep our boarding environment clean and organised.
