ABOUT THE COVER Reflecting the more in-depth collaboration efforts
of the MVP Group’s Paskong Kapatid, this issue’s cover integrates both the festive spirit of Christmas and the value of compassion, togetherness and camaraderie. It is truly the season of giving and sharing our love and time to others as exemplified by the genuine smiles of the children made happier through the Group’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives during the traditional Christmas party for them. This is the essence of the Yuletide season – a semblance of light and hope for these children, despite the seeming insurmountable challenges of life.

Season of Hope
o say that 2016 has been quite shaky is an understatement. It was actually a year of upheavals.
In May, former Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte won the Philippine presidential elections on a platform against drugs and criminality. At 71 years old, he is the oldest to assume the presidency. He is also the first president to come from Mindanao. In June, the UK voted to exit from the European Union that led the British pound to its lowest levels in decades. And last November 8, the US elected Donald Trump as its 45th President. At 70 and with a net worth of $4.5 billion, he is the oldest and wealthiest to assume the presidency. He is also said to be the first in US history to be elected president without ever having held public office or served in the military. For PLDT, we embarked into a digital pivot that saw our accelerated push towards digital services and innovative solutions. We disrupted ourselves as we see our traditional services such as voice and SMS being replaced by digital technologies. We are constantly challenged to improve performance while exercising prudent spending. Despite all our efforts, our stock price has nosedived from a high of P2,360 apiece to the current P1,350 level. At one point, our stock price dropped to a low of P1,260 or nearly a 50% decline from its 52-week high. But all is not lost. There is a lot of reasons to hope that things will get better. First, as MVP has said, our management team is finally complete. We have seasoned executive Eric Alberto as our Chief Revenue Officer. Adding to his sterling credentials is the Communications Excellence in Organizations (CEO Excel) Award conferred to him by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). Working with him are Rey Espinosa who was named Chief Corporate Services Officer, Ralph Brunner as Chief Customer Experience and Data Analytics Advisor, Liza Sichon

as Chief People and Culture Officer, and Joachim Horn as Chief Technology and Information Advisor. PLDT also remains the leader in fixed voice and broadband services. With 88 years of history, we should have the stronger relationship with the Filipino people. We also have the most extensive fiber optic network, already reaching 140,000 kilometers, which serves as the backbone for the introduction of digital services. Indeed, there is so much reason to hope that things will get better. It will get better if we just continue to push on, move forward, keep on fighting. Giving up hope, as that scene in the recent Star Wars movie Rogue One depicted, will only mean acceptance of defeat. But we are fighters. We are rebels. We don’t accept defeat. Jyn echoing Cassian in Rogue One said, “Rebellions are built on hope.” With that hope, the Alliance rebels were able to accomplish their mission that (we know) eventually led to the destruction of the Death Star. This Christmas, may we also not extinguish that hope and fuel it into renewed passion to serve our customers better and build quality life for our people. Merry Christmas everyone and the may the force be always strong in all of us!

PLDT, UPOU renew Infoteach partnership
Continuing its pursuit of academic excellence, PLDT has partnered with the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) for the 4th consecutive year by signing a MOA for the implementation of the 2016-2017 PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program. Aiming to propagate digital literacy nationwide, the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program provides opportunities to public high school students and teachers to learn advanced learning courses and modules that empower program participants to become prepared in the digital world.
Since its inception in 2004, the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program has produced about 20,000 graduates across the nation. The 21st century skills modules include effective communication skills, which consist of an online course on oral communication and conversational fluency in English; social media for education and responsible citizenship; media literacy, global citizenship, which is composed of computer ethics, cybercrime law, and social responsibility; and green IT. PLDT Community Relations (ComRel) Head/ Consultant Evelyn M. Del
Rosario underscored the importance of building formidable partnerships in making the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program a reality. “Since the onset of the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program, we have built partnerships among renowned institutions to ensure the growth of this project,” Del Rosario said. “Evidently, it has continuously touch the lives of many, proving to be a platform of advanced learning in this digital age.” UPOU Chancellor Dr. Melinda dP. Bandalaria emphasized the significance of the reinforced collaboration
between PLDT and partners. “In UPOU, we always look at partnerships as a learning process. The Infoteach Outreach Program sends out a message of continuous learning – not only among the participants and beneficiaries, but even between partners,” Bandalaria said. “Partnerships often become an extension of one’s sphere of influence. It gives opportunities to see the reality of what education should be – empowered and thriving on excellence.” Katrina A. Mallari

ou will be happy to wear the new uniforms. Especially when you have watched the mini fashion show at the PLDT Innolab recently which featured employees, colleagues of various shapes and sizes whom you meet every day, who modeled the 2017-2018 uniforms with ease and confidence. Look closer at the photos in these pages and you’ll see your officemates - cool, beautiful, and elegant in their outfits. They definitely pulled it off, and you can too. Isn’t that exciting?
Alma Flores shows off the new pantone red shade uniform with the silhouette tailored blazer in red maroon polyester with a straight cut skirt highlighted by a cutting in front.
Reflecting the Company’s corporate image and its digital transformation, the new uniforms show designs that are efficient, sensible, and practical. The digital elements can be especially observed in the matrix-like embroidery at the front of the wrinkle-free barong for male employees. As in the previous years, both male and female employees will be given two sets of uniforms per design. The red motif for the ladies will be rendered by winning designer Premiere Center for Fashion & Design, while D’ Designer Fashion & Garments will deliver the charcoal gray ensemble. Two off-white barongs with a complementary pair of pants in two different designs will be made by Manila Embroidery for the male employees.

Dominating the digital era
C
elebrating four decades of service is a rarity. Engineer-economist Fred Carrera describes the milestone as a feeling of professional fulfillment and achievement in his field of endeavor. It was in 1976 when Carrera’s PLDT journey began. As an Engineering Assistant, he did economic planning studies in plant separation, engineering valuation, rates and tariffs, toll settlements and revenue requirements of services offered such as PABX and other services (local and toll services). After three years, Carrera took a competitive scholarship offer from the Center for Research and Communication (now University of Asia and the Pacific) in which he studied M. In his present role, there are quite a few things, which he expects as the Company embraces its digital pivot. “We [PLDT Technical Operations Center team] expect to have more challenges in ensuring to have a reliable network that will deliver awesome customer experience in line with the Company’s digital pivot. There is a constant need to train and motivate all our personnel to adapt with the technology changes as we go through our digital transformation,” Hernandez said.

am what you call someone who “rose from the ranks” – working hard until I have proven myself worthy of the promotion to the next position. [It was] a long journey but it’s worth every step and every job level,” said Angel Senina, who has been with the Company for 30 years. Her story is one that indicates a very interesting evolution revolving around the very particularities of the unknown to what is knowingly accomplished and simply done out of habit. During her first few weeks as a Jr. Clerk at Pasig Service Center, she was tasked to do the annual budget for the whole division. It proved to be challenging for her because everything seemed so unfamiliar back then. But with the support of her superiors, she thrived. Climbing the ladder of success, Senina maintained the belief that hard work and perseverance can definitely go a long way. Since her early years in the Company, her roles have changed. But as an IT Business Analyst, her invaluable contributions remain impactful. As she continues her stay in PLDT, she hopes to further develop her skills and constantly provide a room for growth. CC:

tarting out as an Engineering Assistant with Regional Traffic Administration under the mentorship of Terry Pia Jr., Benjie Causon Jr., one of the 196 25-year service awardees, has learned invaluable lessons from different sections and divisions, even gaining first-hand insights on the customers’ concerns and issues. In his early years in PLDT, Causon has learned the value of hard work. There is a certain amount of loyalty and untiring dedication that is thoroughly put in every role. In his time with the Regional Traffic Administration, where Causon stayed for seven years, he, then, applied to become a Corporate Strategy Analyst. Staying for another five years, Causon dreamt bigger and aspired to become better. It was in 2001 where Causon flew high and beyond. “I got my wings, so to speak, as a Strategic Planning Executive,” Causon said. “When an opportunity came, I got assigned to my first area, Quezon Business Zone for nearly three years until I got re-assigned at Baguio Customer Service Zone for two and a half years. Then finally in my regional stint, I got assigned to Batangas Customer Service Operations Zone, which also included Quezon and Bicol areas,” Causon said. Going on his fourth year, Causon is currently handling the Las Pinas-Alabang CSOZ which also includes San Pedro. Through great collaboration, he and his team have grown this zone into a 1.7B zone for the past three years, becoming the 3rd biggest zone nationwide (second only to Cebu and Cavite), and the biggest in GMM in terms of Home business. he Yuletide season is a time for giving as it embodies the spirit of love, compassion, and togetherness. Spreading happiness for everyone to feel this holiday, the PLDT-Smart Foundation, along with the rest of the MVP Group Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Council, celebrated Paskong Kapatid – a traditional Christmas party for children from various partnercommunities. With smiles permanently painted on the lips of these 131 kids, this year’s Paskong Kapatid was a much-awaited celebration – not only because of the generous gifts given by the MVP CSR Council. But it was with the untiring dedication and efforts of the companies under the MVP Group umbrella to truly give the best for the kids.

It was a memorable early Christmas celebration for 80 kids, aged 4-5 years old, from Consuelo Chito Madrigal Foundation, Inc.’s (CCMF) early learners. These kids were invited by PSF to join in the early Christmas celebration. CCMF early learners come from the depressed areas of barangays Payatas and Bagong Silangan. In the CCMF Payatas site, the children and their families were also recipients of the foundation’s various socioeducational programs such as nutrition, healthcare, skills training programs, scholarships, and tutorials. These children received free early learning education including free school supplies, uniforms, and shoes.
The kids are all smiles as they continue to enjoy their time during the event.
Asian Hospital Charities Foundation brought 10 kids, aged 8-11 years old, for Marilac Hills – a residential treatment facility for female children. Makati Medical Foundation also invited 21 children, aged 4-16 years old, who are dependents of AFP soldiers and personnel who are currently seeking treatment at

One Meralco Foundation also lit up the Christmas of 10 kids, aged 4-7 years old, from Caritas Manila. The MVP Sports Foundation also invited Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippine Olympian silver medalist, to give the kids inspiration to pursuing their dreams – no matter how impossible they may seem to be.

Everyone was in good spirits as the holiday cheer was brought by fascinating performances aimed to entertain the children. PSF, in partnership with Smart, brought in the Batibot children’s show. Encouraging the children to actively participate, the Batibot show through its Christmas storytelling segment was a fun an d interactive way to teach kids a valuable lesson this holiday season – one that underscores the importance of Christmas as a day rooted in love and compassion, rather than any material possession.

PSF President Esther Santos emphasized the spirit of giving, particularly in this time of the year. “More than anything, Paskong Kapatid is a celebration of love. It embodies the spirit of kindness and generosity that ultimately touches the lives of others,” Santos said. “The lovely smiles in the faces of these children are manifestations of a kindness received through the selfless act of giving.” The 2016 Paskong Kapatid ended with the beautiful lights from “Liwanag Park” illuminating the entire Meralco compound. The event aims to empower thought leaders in the South to be more aware of the New World of Work—how businesses and business leaders can make insight-driven decisions with the help of technology.
According to Chet Alviz, Head of SMACS (Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud and Security), events such as these are vital in helping enterprise clients utilize digital resources to help get their job done in a more synergized manner. “We are now living in the age of the ‘mobile-first’ consumer; where the customer’s experience of any product or service defines success or failure of a venture. nspiration fuels productivity. Enlightenment ignites performance. Therefore, leadership’s tall orders revolve around their commitment to be excellent stewards of the talents that’s supposed to thrive in teams by providing the best opportunities for skills development, career growth and work-life balance. Our passion should lie in nurturing a happy work environment of engaged and empowered people. :: Meaningful manifestations that would attest to high impact practice of this value: :: Affirmation and recognition (not necessarily monetary) for jobs well done :: Triple A principle: AwarenessAppreciation-Advocacy. :: Employees are made ‘aware’
of opportunities to grow themselves holistically. :: Employees ‘appreciate’ these programs which are made available to them. :: Employees promote and encourage other employees to actively participate in these programs. :: Competencies that enable the high impact practice of this value: Effective Communication Skills to promote awareness campaign programs :: Effective Presentation Skills to entice employee engagement that will eventually reinforce commitment to corporate goals Coaching Skills for talent management and stewardship, transfer of knowledge, replication of competencies and professional growth
Loyalty to an organization is cultivated not just through enticing salaries and benefit packages. What keep talents glued to a cause is the actualization of their potentials that find meaningful expression in programs and engagements. The extra mile will come naturally when growth inducing moments in project involvement get them excited. Do we lead ‘’exciting’meetings? Do our goals ‘excite’ us? Do the business imperatives produce ‘excitement’ in the atmosphere? The “care factor” in the work place is most pronounced when people report to work with spring on their feet. Big challenges? Caring people will be here to stay not in spite of these… but BECAUSE of these. CC:

Christmas means...
Of Christmases Past and Present By Mary Grace O. Sze, ECSM
Four. Reindeers colored red and gold, Christmas balls and little cherubs never grow old. Eyes filled with wonder as I hung each on our tree That little tabletop shrub that I still remember so dearly. Six. Paper creased from constant folding, I read back my message fervently wishing and hoping The jolly old man would read my little letter And grant my request of a little dollhouse with a built-in dresser. Eight. Eleven. Twelve. I still sang the Christmas carols so fervently. But alas! No more little notes hung by our tree. Gifts and cards are instead exchanged with school buddies. And a little note from my crush had made me a girl so giggly. Fourteen. Eighteen. Twenty. It seemed that the Holidays had skipped by quickly. At twenty-two, twenty-six and thirty, Friends had become part of the celebration annually. Although the heart of thanksgiving is always, always about family. Thirty-one. We started a tradition, yes, with our little one. A Christmas portrait taken in front of our own tree. With an accompanying message that always began “With Holiday cheers and well-wishes from our family.” Thirty-four. I can’t remember a Christmas that brought so much sorrow For it was the first that we celebrated without my father. But we still got by with cheery disposition and a bit of bravado For we know that he wouldn’t want us to be sad but be jolly rather.
Paskong Pinoy
Higit sa anu pa man, huwag nating kalimutan.
Thirty-six. This year is special, very special indeed! For we got a new angel to join us on Christmas Eve. A little boy who was born in April just like his late grandfather A gift that will change our Christmas from hereon and forever.

Sa Ilalim ng Christmas Tree Ni Winona Zerla B. Santos, Regulatory
“S
Christmas means... Seeing, drinking, talking, eating , bonding with your family and loved ones. Going to church with them.. knowing that through God, life means love. Edwin V. Cortez, NOVA/NQCY
CC:
Christmas was the most awaited time of the year in childhood. It was the season of gift-giving. Money couldn’t fit into the wallet. It seemed like an endless spending spree. As the years went by, the child grew older and took on the role of the giver. More years later, he is now a grandfather. He is the much willing host of the Family Christmas Celebration to reunite the family once again and keep the Christmas tradition going. Happy Christmas!

Christmas means differently as we age…. As a child it means hanging our Christmas stockings on the Christmas tree, receiving toys from Santa and people who are dear to us. As a teenager it means receiving a special gift and new clothes to wear for the holidays. As an adult it means shopping for our loved ones, plenty of events and joining the holiday rush. It also means completing our “simbang gabi “ or the dawn mass , so that our prayers and wishes will be answered. We look forward to family gatherings as we give back to others whatever blessings we have received. It means thanking God for all the blessings. It also means that whatever trimmings we have for Christmas, it is Jesus who is the center and the real reason for the Season. Merry Christmas !!!! Ma.

Does Christmas take more meaning as we get older? By Maria Emilia S. De Leon, Recovery Collection Management

et me count the ways …. We learn to let go of things that are important to us when someone needs them more. We learn to accept things beyond our control. We learn to share even when we are in need too. We enjoy every moment. We emphatize with strangers and we commit to help them. We become sentimental. We value relationships. We care. And our children treat us as their friends because we’ve done something good. It leads to selflessness. Our wisdom grows as we get older. But hey, I love Christmas trees, lanterns, bells, ribbons, Santa Claus, reindeer, Christmas songs, Christmas cards and Christmas movies ….. more than ever. CC:

A Mad Hatter Takes on Christmas By Leopoldo Lalim

oes Christmas make you happy? If you answered yes, i doubt it. Maybe you don’t realize but it’s not Christmas that makes you happy. What first comes into your mind when you think about Christmas? (Pause for 15 seconds) Done? Ok. Had a picture of a baby in a manger popped into your head? If you answered no, it’s not Christmas that makes you happy. If you answered yes, may I ask why a picture of a baby in a manger makes you happy? I highly doubt anyone is still “happy” about Christmas in itself. Why are we even celebrating “Christmas”? Can we PLEASE NOT celebrate Christmas anymore? It’s useless to call it that when we don’t know what it means, right? Let’s call it Philippine-Year-enderparty-day or something! Christmas day is simply an intricate calculation and intermingling of facts after all (thank you Mr.Google). It’s simply a commercial ruse much like Valentine’s Day! Right? right. Let. us. not. celebrate. Christmas. Anymore! (Before you hang me up on a tree, please read a bit more.) I THINK YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME. This trail of thought reminds me of a specific part in an intricate story written by a mathematician, Charles Dodgson. He is better known for his pen name Lewis Caroll, the writer of Alice in Wonderland (he holds a special place in my heart for his creativity). For annual celebrations like Christmas, the tea party in wonderland always comes to mind. They were celebrating each other’s “unbirthday”. That is, they were celebrating all the days that was NOT their birthday 364 days of happiness. Liking me a bit more now? Other than our unwritten addiction to dichotomy (which i hope to touch upon soon), I notice that people look for “special” “one time” “limited” editions of everything. We look for specific “special” days in our busy-ness. Someday we’ll be having specific-time-in-a-specific-day celebrations - how i dread the image. With so many “special” days soon we’ll go to special hours then special minutes!!! If everything is blue, nothing will be blue! I SWEAT (not the good kind) JUST THINKING ABOUT IT! To put it simply, most people have lost the joy of the normal everyday life. Right? right.

Christmas should be everyday. Christmas SHOULD be ordinary. We are privileged my friends. We are privileged because we can think of “special” days. Too privileged in fact that we forget the normal days. We forget we have people around us that we can make happy even with the smallest gesture of care and affection. I’d love to believe that Jesus would be ultimately happier if we celebrate “un-Christmas”. Oh, how joyful would heaven be! With 364 days bearing on that one specific “Christmas” day, it won’t be hard to “make” it an un-Christmas too! (No more Christmas day!) Right? right. We don’t have to wait for a specific day to give care and affection, guys. Do you even realize that we often delay our show of affection for “special” days. Would you rather have the person be happy now or be happy some time in the future? The days in between are days that you will leave to chance. They may either be happy or sad days. I would make sure i made the person happier - earlier. Do you agree with me now? You should - in a way. My friends, maybe I’m a little bit crazy in what i’m thinking. It’s not because i’ve been giving so much that i am no longer able to eat properly. I promise you! (haha) It’s more of me receiving - gratefully. I am thankful everyday for what i have, even for just the tiniest things! We can’t give what we do not have after all! Guys, the year is ending. But we are starting again (and again and again and again!). Let’s be NORMAL. We are currently not happy with the things happening around us. Maybe we could look at ourselves a bit more? What have we actually done to help? We don’t need special days, guys! We need to make every day “un-special”! Let’s support our company a little bit more this 2017! Do something different! Make it a NORMAL thing! Share our promos! Help out our technical teams! Be a family member of the company! Make it so normal that you don’t have to think about it anymore! Maybe i’m just a little bit crazy, i loved the mathematician’s “Jabberwocky” poem after all too. 99.7% of the year happy or 0.3% (one day) - you decide! Let’s make PLDT Great! CC:
A Christmas without You By Cherry W. Alaban, EPLM Time has ran so fast, December is here again. Lights are on the streets; Carols are on the air. Everyone is excited, looking forward to celebrate. But a Christmas without you, I don’t think I could make it.
It’s been more than a decade since you’ve been gone. I already have my own family and your legacy has been my guide. This occasion has significance and it reminded me of you so much. A Christmas without you, I knew, it won’t be the same like the past.
It used to be happy, whenever this season is coming. You were there and I don’t remember a sad moment. It was always perfect, until the incident happened. A first Christmas without you, I will never ever forget.
Oh my Daddy, I miss you very much and always will. I’ll do my best to make it more meaningful with my family. They are my inspiration like you used to be. So, a Christmas without you, should never ever be blue.
Christmas
By Samuel P. Hernandez, Enterprise Service Assurance Mgmt-Global As i grow older, Christmas fosters hopes! I feel humbled every time I see the Baby Jesus in the manger. The Son of God, our Savior, is sleeping on a makeshift box used by animals to feed. This is humility most high! This feeling occurs every Christmas time when my family and I prepare our Tree for His muchawaited coming. The heart of our Tree doesn’t dwell on the gift-wrapped boxes and presents our friends send over but the lowly manger where the Messiah sleeps in His radiance and Glory. This Christmas, the Belen, which served as the half-way home for Mary, Joseph and the new-born Jesus, will be the focus of our celebration. For it symbolizes a close-knit family that had to face an adversarial society and a government that was to rule and change their lives in the next 33 years. We are a close-knit family and the presence of the Belen in our home has made us more resilient. Thank God that we have always won life’s challenges. As Christmas came and went over the years, I grew older and my outlook has changed. There were troubling times, but my family and I rejoiced in whatever
blessings our Lord sent to us. We sailed through rough seas and journeyed across difficult roads that tried to stop us. As I grew older and a little wiser and more practical, I can’t help but notice that the scene at the Belen has not changed a bit. Stories retold over thousands of years from as early as 4 B.C. said that it was a silent night and the stars were bright. It was calm, and the shepherds who came with their sheep, cows and goats to pay tribute to Baby Jesus prayed. They were awed by the scene around the manger. The Three Wise Men from faraway lands also came to offer the Baby frankincense, myrrh and gold. An angel told them that the Son of God was born that night. He told the three men to follow a giant star that will stop right above the Belen where they would find Him. Mary and Joseph felt blessed for they were chosen by God the Father to play parents to Mankind’s Saviour. Looking at the manger, I feel a little older, still saddled endlessly with costly and life-threatening health issues that seem to persist. But Jesus, as he lay in the manger, is also looking at me. Or so it seems. As if he is telling me: Sam, my son, have faith, have faith. My adrenalin soars! CC:
When I was a child, Christmas was all about the happiness of receiving gifts. When I became a teenager, Christmas was not complete without attending Christmas party celebrations. When I became employed, it was about sharing the blessings that I received with my family, my relatives, friends and “inaanaks.” I can even sacrifice the office Christmas party for victims of calamities like “Ondoy,” and “Yolanda” and still feel the joy of giving. As I got older, Christmas has become more meaningful. It is all about believing in the love of God, believing in the sacrifice of His Son, and believing in His resurrection. Christmas is all about the salvation of our souls. Ronald Acosta, FNETRES-Transport
