26 ABOUT THE COVER The year 2016 beckons with a winning start – an astounding moment, a euphoric slice of time that one wishes can last longer as he basks in the glory of victory that is rightfully his. The memory of winning lives on as it transforms, changes one’s outlook in life. “A Winning Start” cover was conceptualized by Media’s new graphic artist Archie Mangahas.

T

his issue is all about winning.

We celebrate the New Year with the victorious homecoming of Miss Universe Pia AlonsoWurtzbach. Her journey to become the most beautiful woman in the universe was definitely not a walk in the park. The announcement itself was one for the books which everybody in the planet knows about already. Less known, however, was her relentless determination to reach the top. After two failed attempts for the Universe crown at Binibining Pilipinas, she tried again for the third time despite discouraging words from many people as she’s already much older compared to the other contestants.

Winning

The achievement of our very own network engineer Marjory Sy felt like winning the Miss Universe crown. Marj was awarded the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional of the Year in Dallas, Texas. She was also nominated for Industry Person of the Year. We should celebrate this award not just because she ably represented PLDT and rose on top among the best in the world but also because she conquered a profession that’s dominated by men. This feat also came at the heels of her Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE) certification which she earned after so many sleepless nights and hours of reading and laboratory works. Another PLDT woman executive who assumed a leadership role in an influential international organization is PLDT Hong Kong GM Edith Gomez. She was recently sworn as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Philippine Hong Kong Association (PHKA). Founded in 1961, PHKA is a social and charitable organization composed of Filipino expatriates based in Hong Kong.

Various PLDT programs, and not just individuals, have been recognized in the global stage. The latest of these achievements was the Excellence Award for Best Presentation and Content for PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program led by PLDT Community Relations (ComRel) Head Evelyn del Rosario. Held in Singapore, the award was conferred at the International Conference on Education and Social Science (ICESS) organized by the International Society for Engineers and Researchers (ISER). There are many other successes that we are celebrating in these pages. And it’s very clear that these triumphs are only made sweeter because they were earned through hard work and determination. Here’s to a victorious 2016 to us all!

PLDT HOME Fibr, DSL, Ultera, and Smart subscribers can now access the extensive library of movies, TV shows and original content of global video streaming pioneer Netflix. While all PLDT HOME subscribers can access Netflix using their home broadband plans, Netflix is best experienced with the powerful connection of PLDT HOME Fibr which now delivers speeds of up to 1Gbps and with plans as low as P1,899 per month, with free TVolution stick. Netflix’s adaptive streaming feature recognizes how robust the connection is and automatically adjusts the video quality streamed to the screens. Fibr’s unique symmetrical download and upload speeds allow

users to watch their favorite Netflix shows on high-definition and even on Ultra HD quality. Users may also opt to stream Netflix content on their HDMIready TV using the TVolution Stick whether thru browser or by downloading the app from the Microsoft Store. Netflix users can also watch their favorite shows even outside the home with Smart’s largest broadband network in the country allowing Smart subscribers to stream Netflix content anytime and anywhere. Smart Bro Plan 799 subscribers can connect their free 4G pocket wifi to up to ten devices with 4.5 Gb monthly data allocation while prepaid kits are available for only P1, 495 which comes with 350 mb data allocation for per month for three months.

“We recently increased the speeds of all Fibr plans while we continuously deploy more LTE sites for wider coverage in anticipation of customers’ growing appetite for bandwidth heavy apps like video streaming,” PLDT and Smart EVP and Consumer Business Group Head Ariel P. Fermin said. “The enhanced availability of Netflix in the Philippines will add to the growing range of compelling content that people can easily access through the robust and extensive fixed line and wireless networks of PLDT and Smart.” PLDT and Smart’s digital financial unit, PayMaya Philippines (formerly Smart eMoney), presents the easiest payment solution to customers without credit cards to subscribe to Netflix using their PayMaya

mobile app which generates an instant Visa card for any mobile subscriber. Consumers can immediately use their PayMaya account after being topped up in over 15,000 reloading centers nationwide. In addition to Netflix, PLDT HOME and Smart broadband subscribers can continue to seamlessly access other world-class entertainment options from iflix and Fox International Channels at no added cost. Netflix is the world’s leading Internet television network with over 69 million members in over 60 countries enjoying more than 100 million hours of TV shows and movies per day, including original series, documentaries and feature films. PLDT HOME, Smart pioneer PH’s 1st data sharing capabilities PLDT and Smart have come together to offer the Philippines’ first data plan that enables subscribers to a home DSL service to share their data allocation with mobile phones of their family. Under its new Speedster Fam Plan 1299, PLDT HOME DSL offers five times faster speeds of up to 10 megabits per second (Mbps) and a monthly data allocation of 50 gigabytes (GB). Moreover, subscribers who upgrade their Speedster Plan with a Smart mobile plan 399 or plan 600 can share 6 GB of the 50 GB monthly data allocation to their mobile phone lines which they can use even outside the home. Customers may get up to four Smart mobile phone lines bundled with their Speedster Fam Plan all conveniently billed under one subscription. According to PLDT and Smart EVP and Consumer Business Group Head Ariel P. Fermin, this new service takes off from the Filipino value of sharing. “Sharing is at the core of every Filipino family. We share everything, from food to stories, and memories, and now, data connectivity,” he said. He added that, “Now, more than ever, the strongest connections truly begin at home. With this unrivaled and powerful convergence of the country’s number one broadband provider, PLDT HOME; and the undisputed leader in

mobile services, Smart, we are going beyond the home and enriching mobile experiences of our subscribers. It’s certainly not just about the shared gigabytes but we humanize technology by empowering our customers to live their digitally driven lives to the fullest and strengthen the connections they have with their loved ones despite physical distance through the power of digital and mobile technology.” PLDT HOME’s launch of the new Speedster Fam Plan 1299 comes at the heels of its groundbreaking partnerships last year that enriched the digital lifestyles of its over 70 million subscribers combined. For worldclass entertainment

Smart named best mobile operator anew by int’l body For the second straight year, Smart Communications was named Best Mobile Operator in the prestigious World Communication Awards (WCA), an annual recognition program for innovation and outstanding performance in the global telecommunications industry. In a ceremony held recently in London, Smart bagged the coveted prize over Australian company Telstra and Middle Eastern operator Ooredoo.

Last year, Smart won in the invitation-only category over six other finalists, including Globe Telecom and Turkcell. The WCA is organized annually by Londonbased industry publication Total Telecom. In naming Smart best mobile operator, the WCA recognized the company’s ability to “develop its business by moving into new areas or through service innovation.” Powered by its strengthened digital strategy which focuses

on new mobile data offers and digital partnerships, Smart posted an all-time high growth for its mobile data and broadband businesses in the first nine months of 2015. Combined revenues reached P15.6 billion, aided by a 139% upsurge in mobile data usage within the network. Smart recently forged partnerships with leading global digital technology companies like Uber and Airbnb, and with entertainment companies like iflix, FOX, MCA Music, and Sony Music. It introduced a slew of

digital offers under the “Smart Life” campaign, which gives Filipinos the best of entertainment, convenience, urban comforts, and peace of mind wherever they go. These new partnerships are tied into a more streamlined suite of mobile data offerings, bannered by Smart’s Big Bytes 50 offer that includes 350MB of openaccess data, plus 600MB of additional data for iflix, FOX, and SPINNR, valid for three days. PLDT Pay Express Van

brings bill payment convenience to Manila customers PLDT is again revolutionizing customer experience with the Manila launch of the PLDT Pay Express Van. Fresh from the positive reception of its pilot launch in Cebu, PLDT now brings the convenience of a mobile payment center to its Manila subscribers. PLDT Pay Express Van is a joint initiative between PLDT and Customer Frontline Solutions (CFS), a subsidiary of Meralco and Bayad Center. A first in the industry, the Pay Express Van is a sales and service center (SSC) on wheels where the customary cashiering system found in a payment center is fitted into a mobile truck. Manned by three cashiers ready to process transactions, the setup triples the number of

04

cashiers available during days when the volume of paying customers is high serving as an SSC extension. With more cashiers, payment queues and processing times are shortened, making for a better customer experience. On average, transactions in the Pay Express Van are done in two to three minutes. Moreover, multiple PLDT accounts for HOME, Alpha and SME may be processed as well. “PLDT is dedicated to providing excellent service to our customers. We constantly think of ways on how we can give them the best service and the best experience at all times,” said Jonel M. Ladaban, PLDT vicepresident and head of

credit and collection management. “With PLDT Pay Express Van we are able to supplement the number of available cashiers when customers need it most. We understand our customer’s busy schedules and how time consuming bills payment can be. We want to lessen the time it takes them to transact with this invaluable service,” Ladaban added. The PLDT Pay Express Van will be posted in

Pasig and Pasay SSCs, the two branches with the highest number of customer traffic during peak dates. At its initial rollout, the mobile truck will be stationed in Pasay until February 5 and will operate in Pasig by February 8. From then, it will be stationed in turn between the PLDT SSC Pasig branch along Bagong Ilog every 1st to the 14th of the month and the PLDT SSC Pasay branch along Harrison every 15th to the 30th of the month. THIRD TIME’S A CHARM

For Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, anything is possible By Katrina A. Mallari

M

iss Philippines and PLDT HOME ambassador Pia Wurtzbach was crowned as Miss Universe 2015 last December 20 at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas. It was undoubtedly one of the most dramatic moments in the Miss Universe history as host Steve Harvey announced the wrong name of the winner during the pageant’s coronation night.

08

Nevertheless, it was still a moment that will be remembered by many – not just because of the initial setback that happened, but how, after 42 years of drought for the crown, Wurtzbach brought it back to the Philippines. Among 80 women from different parts of the world, Wurtzbach was hailed as the top seed. But it wasn’t all glitz and glamour for Wurtzbach. Before becoming Miss Philippines and eventually,

being crowned as Miss Universe 2015, Wurtzbach joined the Binibining Pilipinas beauty pageant three times. In the first two years of her attempt for winning the crown, her efforts fell a little bit short. But Wurtzbach epitomizes third time’s a charm as she bested 33 other women and won the title of Miss Philippines 2015 to represent the country in the Miss Universe pageant.

NOW, I finally got the best Christmas gift ever – and not just for me, for my country. I’d like to say thank you to everyone who believed in my potential and those who supported me from the beginning.” .

“We could not be any prouder of our very own PLDT HOME DSL ambassadress as she embarks on this new journey after bagging the 2015 Miss Universe crown,” PLDT VP and HOME Marketing Director Gary Dujali said. “Pia has been with us throughout the year as we agressively went around the country bringing the family-sized broadband connection of HOME DSL to more Filipino homes nationwide.”

Utmost gratitude Wurtzbach expresses her utmost gratitude for this recent achievement, addressing the people who have supported her throughout her journey. “Wow. Words can’t describe how grateful I am for this. It was quite a journey getting here with three attempts at winning Miss Philippines,” she said. “Now, I finally got the best Christmas gift ever – and not just for me, for my country. I’d like to say thank you to everyone who believed in my potential and

those who supported me from the beginning.” Wurtzbach’s indefatigable spirit and perseverance is an inspiration to many. It is in believing in the many possibilities of one’s dream that it is truly realized. Her journey to becoming Miss Universe 2015 exemplifies a heart that tirelessly strives to achieve something more – one that manifests the reality that indeed, anything is possible. CC:

stablishing breakthroughs in corporate social responsibility (CSR), the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program spearheaded by Community Relations (ComRel) recently won an Excellence Award for Best Presentation and Content. Held in Singapore, the International Conference on Education and Social Science (ICESS) was organized by the International Society for Engineers and Researchers (ISER). PLDT ComRel Head and Consultant Evelyn M. Del Rosario collaborated with the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) FICS Dean Melinda Bandalaria and Emely Amoloza in showcasing internationally the continuous efforts made by PLDT and its renowned partner-agencies in implementing a program that provides opportunities for the acquisition of digital skills as a way of adapting in the 21st century teaching and learning arena. These partner-agencies are UPOU, Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA), and the local government units (LGUs) in different areas nationwide.

The paper written by Del Rosario, Bandalaria, and Amoloza was submitted by the authors to ISER to recognize in the international arena a CSR project such as the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program that enables a nation to thrive in a technologically advanced world. From barangay to national level Since 2004, the program has evolved from barangay to national level, initially catering to only national high school students, which started in 2006 with Netopia as one of the partneragencies. In 2012, a teachers’ category was created to respond to the need for advanced teaching methods of national high school teachers. Since the year marking its first implementation in 2004 until 2013, the program has produced 9,073 student and teacher graduates. In 2014, the program has continuously reached out to different schools nationwide. Covering 14 schools in various areas in the country this year, it has produced 4,513 student- and teacher-graduates. In a span of 11 years, the program has changed the lives of 13,586 student- and teacher-graduates.

Tedious task Implementing a CSR project such as the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program is a tedious task that entails commitment, effort, and hard work. With three phases included in the program: the training of master trainers and training of trainers, the roll-out of training program, and the Home DSL Broadband Quiz Contest, PLDT aims to create greater possibilities of digital learning and provide maximum benefits to every individual participants. “PLDT has always envisioned many ways of helping and reaching out to people,” Del Rosario said. “The thirst for knowledge among the PLDT Infoteach Outreach Program participants has continuously led PLDT and its partneragencies to strive harder in providing advanced learning tools and teaching methods for the ongoing search for digital and technological innovations.” Making a change requires a series of small steps. It begins with something small – an idea that is rooted in hope. As one takes on tiny steps towards achieving milestones, one ultimately creates a bigger picture that evidently leads to changing people’s lives. CC:

inning is an astounding moment. It’s a euphoric slice of time that you wish could last longer as you bask in the delightful warmth of recognition and acclaim. It generates excitement, a fantastic flash of disbelief (OMG! is it really me? plain average me?) and transforms you into the happiest, walking-on-air human being. Global awardee For Marjory Sy who was recently named Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional (CECP) of the Year, the first MEF CECP awardee in PLDT and the Philippines, getting the award was like winning the Miss Universe title: “I felt like I have been crowned Miss Universe 2015 that night, a great pre-emption to the Philippines’ winning the actual pageant!” The MEF is a global industry alliance composed of nearly 220 member organizations based in 43 countries. professional excellence, leadership, and innovation in the global Carrier Ethernet community. 2015 was a dazzling year of achievements for Marj. “Winning the MEF CECP is one of the achievements I am most proud of, aside from passing the Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (CCIE),” says this network engineer. “Two achievements in one year – that’s only possible with the Lord’s guidance and grace. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent PLDT and the Philippines in the global Carrier Ethernet stage.” Getting the CCIE, for one, involves arduous work, tons of commitment and wrought-iron determination. certifications any network engineer or IT person would aspire of achieving,” Marjory wrote in an article published in Access Magazine, December 2015. “The preparation towards achieving the CCIE dream was a journey only the strong-willed can survive. It meant personal sacrifices and reprioritization, sleepless nights and time away from home and usual daily routine, and countless hours of dedicated reading and laboratory exercises.” Her job at the Product & Services Network & Platform Solutions (ProdServ) Division entails designing the solutions network and managing projects for the various PLDT services offered to clients. too overpowered for words, i can only stare with admiration at the beauty of landscapes.” - macky sevilla Marj joined PLDT in 2006, her second job after completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering (BS ECE) at the UST. She was a student-camper in 2003 “where I was assigned to the same team I am with right now, under the mentorship of Innovation Center Head Czar Lopez where my current team belongs.”

Prizewinning Photographs Marc Edgar Sevilla, Macky to friends and colleagues, is a telecom engineer at the Fixed Network Resolution and Escalation Division. Like Marj, he also took his on-the-job training in PLDT while still a student at the Mapua Institute of Technology. He too graduated with a BS ECE degree and joined PLDT in 2010, one of the cadet engineers hired that year.

Needless to say, her favorite subject is Math. “I love Math and any subject or course related to it. Math does not call for long memorizations as it deals more with analysis and comprehension of the given vs. the needed values. With Math, I was trained to find the quickest way to solve a problem.”

He also passed the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), the second level in the tough ladder of certifications.

But she doesn’t spend all her waking hours thinking about the Fibonacci sequence and the Number theory. Marj’s multifaceted interests include writing poems, reading online journals, singing via online karaoke or downloadable app, dancing, playing basic guitar tunes, and cooking. One of the prolific contributors to the Life & Arts section of Acc:ess Magazine, Marj is also the earliest to send in her poems for the monthly issues. Inspired by her “encounter with the Lord, the frustrations/ disappointments and success, the unreciprocated affections, the unexpected Miracles from Him, dreams and random thoughts,” she writes fast, taking only 15 to 30 minutes to compose a poem. And as Marj writes about her muses, another engineer cum visual artist stirs up the photographic landscape with his mesmerizing photographs that have won awards in various nationwide photo contests.

Inspired by thought-provoking photographs, the budding photographer began to shoot during his free time. He bought his first camera with his first bonus and made it a point to take pictures regularly to practice his skills. Joining the PLDT LENS Camera Club in 2011, Macky’s talent started to shine. His name popped up in photo contests, the images he took gained recognition. Very soon, his works became consistent winners in numerous photo tilts, including the Iconic Impressions, conducted by Anchor Land Holding, Inc., and the Capture Digital Photo contest by Forum Robinsons, as well as those organized by the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation (FPPF). At PLDT LENS Club, he was voted Photographer of the Year for three consecutive years, from 2012 to 2014, earning for him and his riveting photographs the Hall of Fame award in 2015. He was also elected President of the Club last year. He is currently specializing in landscape photography because nature evokes a different feeling for him: “Too overpowered for words, I can only stare with admiration at

the beauty of landscapes.” Macky relates how he shoots sunrise and sunsets which require endurance and patience in waiting for the right timing: “You have to wait for hours on end to get the perfect shot. The sun doesn’t always show itself the way you want it to.” Nature and animals, some of the most compelling subjects, are oblivious of cameras, which brings to mind another photographer in James Thurber’s story, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, who said, “Beautiful things don’t ask for attention.” Travelling and its unlimited opportunities for shooting invigorates him. His favorite subject, the Mayon Volcano with its majestic splendor, is overwhelming: “Iba ang experience when it comes to Mayon! Speechless ka sa sobrang ganda. It retains its beauty from all angles.” “Photography is really absorbing and exhilarating, if you have the passion for it,” Macky says. “But your shots have to be acknowledged by other people, especially professional photographers, so you can measure your skills and continue to improve them.” He counsels aspiring photographers to search the internet for interesting photos and get inspiration from photography experts and icons: “You can upload your shots on social media, a big tool in photography, where people can view your photos and give you feedback.” He did this, still does it, and it jumpstarted his zeal for photography. As both Marj and Macky tell us, limitless passion, commitment, hard work, and patience pave the way to pleasant surprises: The extraordinary winning moments of our lives. And we wonder in exultant disbelief: Is this really for me? CC:

EICB Code A has three major award categories namely: revenue, customer experience, and innovation. Subsidiaries/VIP Acct Mgmt. Executive Anthony Lim and Enterprise Subsidiaries & VIP Acct Mgmt. Senior Manager Dennis Donato with their team received an EICB Code A win under the Customer Experience Award Category for their work

during Pope Francis’ visit in the Philippines. Asked about what they felt upon the recognition given to their efforts regarding the project, Lim and Donato noted the efforts of the people behind it, emphasizing how it was a success built on teamwork. “Getting an award is not easy, especially the EICB Code A,” Lim said. “Supposedly, there were more people who deserve the award – people who worked outside throughout the duration of the event. We’re only representing these people.” “One thing about our people that is noteworthy is that while we were conducting all these, they were all very supportive,” Donato said. Winning an EICB Code A under the Innovation award category is the PLDT SME Nation Tech Island project headed by PLDT Head of SME Community Engagement & Marketing Communication Gabby Cui. “PLDT Tech Island is the largest event for our IT community,” he said. “It is an event in which we introduce them to all our innovative solutions.” PLDT Category Head for SME Data Solutions Marc Roxas, who was

We are all trying to change that game throughout the industry,” Roxas said. Cui and Roxas expressed gratitude upon the recognition the Tech Island project received. With heart and hard work dedicated to the project, every effort to make the event a success was truly worth it. “It felt really rewarding to be recognized by the EICB Code A,” Cui said. “It inspired us to make it an even better event.” “It was very challenging at first, but if you see it through the end, it’s very fulfilling,” Roxas said. “The project was a huge collaborative effort. Everyone from our sales, technical, customer experience, events and of course marketing team helped out in this event. Everyone played a part. It really was a one big SME effort.”

With outstanding efforts and projects recognized last year, the EICB continues to pursue excellence in bringing about a great customer experience. “Through Code A, the EICB hopes to deliver significant growth and competitive progress leveraging on social, mobility, analytics, cloud, and security on an overlay to our core connectivity resources,” PLDT VP and Head, Subs & VIP and GM, ePLDT-ABM Global Solutions Luigi Lopa said. PLDT and Smart EVP and Head of Enterprise, International and Carrier Business and ePLDT CEO Eric Alberto emphasized the importance of Code A in fostering teamwork by encouraging more collaborative efforts towards a common goal among the different units across the organization. “The EICB recognizes the exemplary performance of every employee and efforts based on a great collaboration, which result to significant revenues

of the Enterprise Business,” Alberto said. “By continuously encouraging them to go beyond what is expected of them, we create a greater avenue for growth and improvement in delivering the best customer experience.” While the recognition given to the top performers of every project was rewarding, their sense of fulfillment truly came from the hard work they have put into their work; thus, enabling them to embark on a path towards reaching their highest potential. With various achievements recognized in the past year, there is no doubt that one tirelessly exerts effort in exceeding what is expected of them. By doing more, one achieves higher standards of service, resulting to better performance and creating greater customer satisfaction. CC:

ailing from Pangasinan, Paciano Salting has been teaching for the last 16 years at San Jose National High School. And as luck would have had it, he was one of the raffle winners during Gabay Guro’s Grand Gathering of Teachers held in September last year at the Mall of Asia Arena. Salting drove home a Foton van, one of the event’s major prizes from Foton Philippines, a partner-company of PLDT-Smart Foundation (PSF). With overwhelming joy, Salting expressed his gratitude to the people who made it possible for him to attend the grand gathering as well as to PLDT and Foton Philippines. “Salamat po una sa dati naming district supervisor Edwin Ampler. Siya po ang nagbook ng ticket ko,” he said. “Salamat din po kay Alex Mamaril. Siya po ang nagsama sa akin. Sa principal namin, Dr. Lodivina Zamora, kay Sir Eflido Capua, maraming salamat po. At higit sa lahat, maraming salamat sa PLDT at sa Foton Philippines.” When asked what he will do with the Foton van, he excitedly shared the idea of turning it into

By Katrina A. Mallari a family service. Explaining that their house is six kilometers away from the school where he teaches, he is extremely thankful for the convenience that comes from winning the Foton van. PLDT Group Controller and Smart Chief Financial Officer June Cheryl Revilla emphasized the importance of giving every possible opportunity to the people who have helped shaped us to be the persons we are today. “This partnership is about taking that first step – giving them every opportunity that paves the way for their lives to be changed,” she said. “These teachers and mentors have given their time and effort to every individual they have come across with in their lives. Now is the time to make a difference in their lives.” EVP for Foton Philippines Anna Maria Parado noted the second time Foton Philippines and PLDTSmart Foundation’s Gabay Guro tie-up in changing the lives of teachers nationwide. “This is the second time Foton Philippines

supported the program. Foton is a commercial vehicle brand. This means that vehicles can be used for businesses,” she said. “Aside from personal use, the car seats can be folded and used for delivery – a convenience that especially caters to various SMEs.” “It’s different from just giving a car. Now, we can think of doing something else. Owning a van can be used in many different ways. For instance, it can also be used to earn some extra income for the family,” Parado added. Be it luck or simply a twist of fate, there are rare moments when one faces a situation that is evident in one’s favor. Paciano Salting is a lucky man, but even more so, he is one of the many teachers whose luck is well-deserved. Awarding the Foton van to Salting is a simple gesture of utmost gratitude for the many years of hard work and dedication in shaping the many lives of today’s youth. CC:

I

t is possible for some people in work teams to get so engulfed by the many pressing deliverables day after day and miss out on rich interfaces that inspire unity. When this happens for some time, the burnout syndrome is certain to take its toll on morale and the punishing timelines find everyone yearning for more meaningful interpersonal connections that go beyond the needs to achieve business goals. That is why perhaps, the Team Dynamics Workout PLDT HR-OD conducted for Smart ICON Integrated Resources was so well received. It became the long overdue learning expedition on relationships and attitudes that build momentum for solidarity and commitment. At the helm of this initiative is the Head of its group, Mike Garzon who persisted on tapping EmpDev Head Nonong Noriega and Lead Training Officer Lydia dela Merced, given the lingering impact of their past engagements with Smart CustCare two years ago.

place at the same time the riveting team encounters unfolded. To Garzon, there are no showstoppers to get his troops on the same page and winning mindset. It was a major breakthrough that broke down the walls of indifference and built bridges of understanding.

Held at Smart Staff house in Tagaytay, the clamor to make this happen was such that to ensure perfect attendance, a remote site for operations was installed in the function room itself with participants taking turns in monitoring the provision of service requirements there and then to ensure continuity and that quality of work output remains uninterrupted. “Teambuilding is not a one-time conduct of a session. Even more critical is what happens when we leave the structured environment. The seeds of goodwill must be nurtured. We have the guard the momentum to be able to sustain the gains, said Noriega. The second phase will likely happen this year. In the end, everyone is one in believing that a productive and memorable session is bound to give birth to another one. CC

Taking the Lead

Oscar “Ren Ren” Reyes as PLDT HOME’s newest Operations Head By Katrina A. Mallari As PLDT HOME’s new head for operations, Ren Ren Reyes believes that there are greater possibilities for PLDT to truly be the internet hub.

I

t takes excellent leadership, a great mindset, and strong strategic plans to establish a wave of change and ultimately be able to adapt to it. As PLDT HOME’s newest Operations Head, Oscar “Ren Ren” Reyes, Jr. envisions and intends to focus on three things: consumer orientation, quality of products and services, and service orientation. These three vital components are strengthened by concrete plans of action through acquisition, upgrade, and same-day service. “Consumer orientation entails the absolute need to meet the current and future digital needs of our consumers. Furthermore, we need to be obsessed with quality because that is precisely what the consumer wants,” Reyes said. “They want quality products and quality services. And these consumers are truly becoming more and more demanding now. So, if we are able to improve our capabilities and standards, and deliver it with quality, there are greater possibilities of competing in this digital age.” “When it comes to service orientation, we need to measure ourselves versus what the consumer expects,” Reyes added. “We need to review all our current standards when it comes to service

22

because it’s not okay anymore to be acceptable. Our consumers need to be delighted. That’s really how we get to deliver brand love. Brand love would be measured by great service because we are a service oriented industry.” Mixing service orientation and consumer orientation to provide quality products and services entails a visible plan of action as the Company moves into the digital age. Reyes emphasizes on acquisition to be the first step in combining all three components. According to Reyes, acquisition pertains to households as the focal point of business. Attempting to reach an addressable market of 18 million households, Reyes admits that it’s a long way to go. “It’s still very far off, but there’s a lot of room to grow. It’s important to take these things one step at a time,” he said. Reyes explains that the second step involves upgrade – a continuous effort to serve and delight current consumers. As technology continues to evolve, the consumers’ demand for it increases as well. Upgrading services is a way to innovate new tools to satisfy the consumers’ need. But more than that, Reyes points out that through the advancement of technology, there is an even larger opportunity to be able to impart

knowledge. “It is important to guide our consumers through the digital age. By imparting knowledge, we give them choices on how to consume technology and empower them to do so,” he said. “Educating them gives them the opportunity to acquire the different needs they want out of HOME – peace of mind, security, and connectedness.” Along with the consumers’ demand for technology is a constant need for quality service. Reyes explains that the third step includes this particular demand on the service side. “Getting as close to same-day service as much as possible is a way to truly send a message of prioritizing our consumers’ needs,” he said. “This is not something that happens overnight, but that’s the vision.” “The future is really all about the internet-of-things. That means everything can be connected. With this idea in mind, there are greater possibilities for PLDT to truly be the hub of the internet-of-things,” he added. Despite the responsibilities and tasks that his new position entails, Reyes draws inspiration from his parents, his wife, and kids. Through his parents, he learned to live by the values of continuous learning, excellence, integrity, hospitality, love of family and dedication to God. Being a family man, he spends quality time with his wife and kids. “Time outside the office is primarily dedicated to the family. Weekends

are filled accompanying them in their activities – soccer, basketball, and ballet,” he said. “When we have more time, we go out of town – preferably the beach.” Reyes also manages to talk about a range of things – from discussing strong strategic plans to sharing simple things like the origin of his nickname – one that resulted from combining ‘r’ of Oscar and ‘en’ of Enrico, adding that his friends would say it comes from his father’s namesake. “Dahil Oscar rin pangalan ko, naging Ren Ren,” he said. As a leader, Reyes identifies himself to be very resultsoriented. “It’s about delivery. I like to go out in the field. I like to be with the people, and really talk about the execution,” he said. “So, at the end of the day – that’s what delivers the results. I empower my team but I also hold them accountable at the same time.” As he takes on the lead of becoming PLDT HOME’s Operations Head, Reyes relies on PLDT’s core values of commitment, service, and innovation as PLDT steers to greater heights, moving into the digital future. It makes a character out of him – be it, a fruit ninja, a Katniss Everdeen-like character, or a child that plays a traditional game like tumbang preso. All these are possible because of a community as innovative as Virtual Reality (VR) Philippines. PLDT along with VR Philippines brings a game-changing technology through virtual reality. Held recently at PLDT Innolab in Mandaluyong, the Manila Vive Jam invited participants ranging from university students to freelance and professional app developers to learn and collaborate on creating immersive VR applications and experiences using room-scale tracking and natural input technology that is made possible with the HTC Vive and StreamVR platform. n a strict biological line of thought, our sense of sight, smell, taste, hearing and feeling makes us enjoy life. When one of these gets impaired, we go to the doctor for remedies for they upset the quality of any experience we go through. But there are other five fine senses we need to check on that impact the way we face and realize our aspirations for the future. When they’re not in top shape, they also affect the fulfillment of destinies.

1. Sense of Adventure. It is likely that game changers will disrupt the way we operate our businesses again. If we’re too fixated on a game plan that does not provide for contingencies and sudden alteration of priorities, then we’re bound to lose steam. We have to see change not in the context of displacement or disorder but as opportunities to level up. The digital transformation should get us all excited and open to new learnings. O nward With A T hankful Heart by Mary Grace O. Sze, CSSM

“M

om! It’s a beautiful day!” my daughter greeted me as I was preparing her breakfast this morning. Her emphatic declaration was amusing considering that she was just gazing at the sky and was referring to the sunrise. A petty thing some of us might think but the wonder it brings to a child’s eyes made me realize that there is nothing too small or too big that we can’t be thankful for. Writing this article made me reflect on the year that had gone by and it made me realize that God had truly been generous with His blessings. And though I won’t be able to list it all, the Lord knows that my heart is bursting with joy and thankfulness for His gifts. For the past year, I am grateful for having the opportunity to be a more involved parent in my daughter’s school. I am also grateful for having the time to spend with my daughter – attending “tea parties,” reading her bedtime stories and answering her never-ending Why’s. I am thankful for being blessed with another child. And I am equally thankful that both the baby and I are safe despite going thru an oophorectomy at the onset of my second trimester of pregnancy. I want to give thanks for having the strength and guidance to overcome the trials that came into our life. I am grateful for my husband who has always been a staunch supporter and a wonderful, wonderful father to our child. I am grateful for learning to accept that my father was indeed gone and the pain that came with his passing is slowly easing. The memories though and his presence in our hearts will never be gone. And for that, we are eternally grateful. I am thankful for the learnings that each day brings - be it having a positive or a negative impact in our lives. We will always be grateful if we are able to bring these lessons with us as we strive to grow morally and spiritually. I am grateful for the gift of life – of being able to wake up each day and gaze at the marvel that is my family and the beautiful world that we live in. To still be able to feel the wind in our face, the drops of rain on our hair and the sand on our feet. The list will go on because we will always have something that we should be thankful for. Yes, maybe it’s time to learn from a child and make sure that we do not miss the blessings that the Lord has been showering us. Let us fill our hearts with positivity and may we learn to celebrate all our victories and shortcomings because the New Year beckons and it is better welcomed with a skip in our step and a cheerful beat in our hearts. “I do”

By Tricia Blue Sixteen years ago, there was a lady Full of love and dignity For almost three decades she enjoyed her liberty But when she got married, she gained insanity

Looking back on your wedding day Everyone felt that love was in the air Romance was seen all over the place Wishing you a life showered with happiness

The union of two strangers is risky Trust and respect are necessary Once love is tested with honesty Time will tell when it’s steady

They say marriage is a piece of paper A powerful sheet that no one can bargain Explore and enjoy every phase it brings And be ready to accept when things have changed

At 29, she said “I do” Gave her heart and soul to you Raised her children with your shadow And embraced the sky with thoughts of you

There’s always a door of hope in life A second chance is waiting next in line Always believe that when hearts become one True love will come in God’s perfect time

a walk of faith and his grace By Marjory C. Sy, ProdServ I started the year 2015 with a clean page Letting the Lord take the center stage In humble surrender, I prayed in confidence “O Lord, guard my heart and increase my patience To do Your Will no matter what it takes To wait for Your Answers no matter how it may come my way To focus on You, to persevere and not forsake The tasks You have given, and be grateful every day.” I let go of the pen and chose to have Him write my story As I have learned from the pain and the burns in my history Declaring that the year will be a start of something new – To pray and rely more on His Love, Mercy and Grace To rest in His Presence and seek more to see His Face Though life was an unpredictable ride through the waves of time, The Lord inspired me to take courage and have faith in His Promises. Ten months of sleepless nights and crazy emotional rollercoaster rides With the end result not clearly in sight, I may have become insane But the good Lord guarded my heart through all the processes He impressed in me: “I will bring you through them all, My child, Trust Me as I know what is best for you. It will be worth the pain.” His Miracles are always amazingly awesome As they are far more than my dreams and aspirations – A fulfillment of a childhood dream to visit Tokyo A realization of a career milestone deemed impossible five years ago A global recognition to years of hard work after a heart-breaking loss A changed life that is anchored on renewed dedication to serve Him more This is my 2015 in review – a walk of faith and His Grace As I look forward to a brighter and better 2016 – more of Him and less of me

or the past years it was a wall of fears, feelings of inadequacy, doubts and insecurities. But I still go on and face life. I wake up every day with a new and renewed hope making sure that my dreams won’t just remain dreams. Like you, I struggle, get afraid, don’t know how to start and finish and break through that wall. But I did, because, look, I am here. I have overcome. Sometimes I still get defeated, get tired and think of quitting because it seems that nothing is happening. But I’m still here, I didn’t stop chasing my dreams. Learn to overcome the curved balls life often throws us. Embrace failures. Listen and give yourself the freedom to try new things on your own.” -Rebelyn Q. Rosales, Business Process Assurance

Reason behind imperfections, lies in maturity. When does a bud become a fruit, And a plant develop roots? Intentions, decisions, illusions... Do all of these answer a weary dream? Or will there still be room for visions and intuitions? The answers, Express not to impress. Inspire with no expiration. Live simply but build a good legacy. Then, wake-up, go back to reality... Prove everything, as hard work really pays off. Slowly you’ll realize fruits are sweetest, when the roots be sprinkled with pure sweat.

Perfect time

I

By Cherry W. Alaban, Enterprise Service Assurance Management

t was November 20, 2014 when I gave birth to my baby girl. Her name is Precious, because for us, she is the most precious gift we have ever received. After 10 years of waiting since we got married, the perfect time has finally arrived. GOD sent her to fulfill my ultimate dream and to bring highlight to my life. Honestly, I am not a successful career woman like I wanted to be. I didn’t become a teacher just like I dreamt of when I was in elementary. I didn’t achieve my high school goal of becoming a journalist or a newscaster either. Currently, my field of work is not related to my college course which is BS in Commerce major in Management Accounting. Despite these, I am happy because I have my daughter Precious and nothing else can be greater than that. Whatever happened in the past, I don’t have any regrets because I know God has His best plan for me. CC:

rom the moment that Charlize Theron, who plays the one-armed Imperator Furiosa in the Oscar-nominated Mad Max: Fury Road, singlehandedly drove her war rig into the liberation of beautiful “breeders” last summer, moviegoers knew that 2015 will be a good year for female characters. To note a few unforgettable ones: Alicia Vikander’s Ava in Ex Machina illustrating the doom of creation destroying its creator; Jada Pinkett Smith’s commanding presence as Rome in Magic Mike XXL who turns the tables by running a strip club with male dancers and female patrons; and the remarkable duo of Cate Blanchett’s Carol and Rooney Mara’s Therese in Carol, who compellingly portrayed the complexity of finding one’s self through love and all its forms.

the rightful keeper of Luke Skywalker’s legendary lightsaber? Daisy Ridley’s Rey in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens did not believe it as well at first, but gradually embraced it, ending 2015’s successful run of showcasing empowered women. Truly, it has been a good year for female characters. Moviegoers can anticipate more with an impressive line-up of movies slated for 2016, and maybe this time, it will be a great year. CC:

Great finish at Chicago, Japan marathons By Monica Belle Tejada, Smart Public Affairs

Smart’s employee-athletes continue to prove their mettle and endurance not only locally but also in international marathons in Chicago and Japan, both of which happened last year. It was the first time for Smart to participate in the events. Strategy and Operations Support Senior Manager Grace Ruperto, left photo, and Logistics Department Head Warren Ermac, center, both finished the Chicago Marathon, an annual event organized by the Bank of America for 30 years now. Wireless Mainstream Enterprise Solutions Senior Manager Sherry San Pedro, right photo, conquered the Osaka Marathon, an annual running event in Japan hosted by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations and Yomiuri Shimbun, a Japanese national newspaper. These marathoners are members of the Samahang Mananakbo ng Smart, one of the 22 employee clubs in Smart that seek to promote active wellness in the company so its workforce can live by the “Live More” manifesto. To promote holistic wellness among its employees, Smart has also been organizing year-round wellness activities including sports festivals, workout sessions, and wellness seminars as part of its “Live Well, Live More” program.

Conquering the 21k and loving it! By Maridel M. Manalang, SSC Visayas

tarting the year in triumph as we ran with the thunderous beat of the Sinulog Festival in the background, six of us from PLDT Cebu recently completed the 21K in the Cebu City Marathon, an internationally renowned running competition organized by RunRio Inc. in Cebu which drew more than 7000 participants who competed in the 42K full marathon, 21K half marathon and 5k run. The 21K Finishers from PLDT were Network’s Irene Tingzon, Ben Canedo and Joneth Aparicio and Sales and Service Center’s Konie Lumapas, Ramir Pedroza and myself. The small but formidable PLDT Cebu running team started with HR’s Bawal Bumigat Program, taglined Takbo Cebu Takbo, spearheaded by Cebu Operations Zone Head Bong Lintag. Supported by HR’s Angelie dela Cruz, the group ran every Mon-Wed-Fri , 5:30AM and 5:30PM. Participants in the program were evaluated based on their speed and endurance. Assisted by the Sugbu Road Runners Club, we also did five road runs in November last year which started from 11k to 21K before hitting the roads for the marathon.

32

It was an exhilarating experience for the six of us. Imagine, getting up early in the mornings or running after work, rain or shine. Hitting the road to get those miles for the past several months was not a joke. All those things we had to go through at our age! At times we were screaming from fatigue and even reached the point of almost giving up. But we persisted. The actual marathon was exciting but scary. We hoped to cross the line on our own two feet! It didn’t matter if we ran for two hours or more, all we wanted was to finish. Running the first 10-12K was easy-breezy for us. The SRP tunnel was a challenge since this was the first time we ran on enclosed grounds (and passed twice) where shortage of air is common. The pain started to kick in after 14K, fatigue slowly crept in and the whole experience became not just physical but mental. The pain I felt was worse than my colleagues since I suffered a bad knee before the marathon even started. Our determination to finish and the sacrifices we made in the past months really set our minds to complete the 21K. In the end, the six of us crossed the line in more than two hours. Not bad for marathon first timers, middle-aged employees who spend most of their time inside the office. It may not be the ideal set-up for us to succeed but we were able to conquer the 21K run. And more importantly, we can teach our kids that with enough perseverance, discipline, dedication and sacrifice, any challenge can be overcome. CC:

holidays’ open heart By Melvin Artugue, FMA – ESAM Team C The entire world is celebrating the Christmas season But one family is struggling for one reason Their little boy is dying due to heart failure They’ve called the best American surgeon just to be sure The little boy is staring at the beautiful fireworks display The un-churched doctor is now on his way He was about to check the little boy’s body parts The boy told him, “You will see Jesus when you open up my heart” The surgeon does not believe in the existence of God All of his ways are neither good nor bad He insisted that he will now check on the sick little boy So he may find a miracle, and the family will find joy The operation started and the poor boy’s heart was found deteriorated With this, he only has a couple of hours to live; the doctor was frustrated

The good surgeon went out of the room to get fresh air This is something beyond his control and was so difficult to bear “Lord, have mercy on this boy,” the doctor said “Please give him a chance to live,” he added “Wait, why am I calling on You Lord?” He then realized “I do not believe in You! Why did I cry?” He went back in as his dimmed eyes did overflow With a gentle voice, he told the boy what he must know “Your heart is very weak and you might die” The boy just stared at him and gave him a smile “I knew I would die, but did you find Jesus in my heart?” The surgeon wept as he is falling apart “Yes, I saw Him and I begged for a miracle to happen” The boy died hours later and the doctor’s life was changed; all was so sudden

My life,–my gift

A

By Ma. Leonora S. Malenab, Cauayan SSC

nother year has passed and I’m looking forward to my new year with love and hope in my heart. 2015 was indeed victorious for me and my family since my health has stabilized again. The last tick of 2015 was the highlight of my triumph over sickness since I was able to finish the year without undergoing any medical procedure or hospital confinement. The stress and fears were all gone and I anticipate another victory again this year! God has really blessed me, surrounded me with love and support from my family, friends and everybody; those were enough to keep me going and fight the battle of my life – the struggle against lupus. I never felt unloved, I never felt self-pity, I never felt isolated. I just keep thinking that life is beautiful – and I should be happy and thankful at all times. God gave me a second chance to live and therefore, this life is only for Him! I thank, praise and honor Him. Every time I celebrate my birthday, I’m so thankful. I’m so proud to shout to the world that I’m given another year to celebrate life. My life is a gift and a blessing! Every day is a gift, a miracle - from waking up each morning to sleeping at night. We overlook these small things that really matter most. Moments spent with our loved ones also signify that life is not measured by material things. They are our treasures - priceless and irreplaceable. We should always count our blessings and give thanks to Him, who is the provider of all! Looking forward to this year makes me positive and hopeful in every way. As I continue to pray, I lift everything to Him. I can never tell where the future will lead me, but through God’s grace and mercy, His will shall be done in my life. This early, I declare another victory for the year 2016! CC:
