Let Big Ben Ring: the Exit Time is Announced

S

ources say that “when Big Ben bongs at midnight” on March 29, 2019, the precious negotiation time a new deal forward between Britain and the rest of the EU will end. An agreement, however, has to be reached as soon as October 2018 to allow both sides time for ratification. The tight 18-month period began on March, 29 with Tim Barrow, the UK diplomat to the EU, delivering Theresa May’s letter to the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk. In this, Article 50, a part of the Lisbon Treaty of 2007, are detailed conditions for a country’s voluntary exit of the Union, which has been officially invoked. The six-page letter helps to clarify the UK’s position on Brexit. It confirms the understanding that the four freedoms of the single market (free movement of people, goods, services and financial market products) are not going to be separated nor infringed, and that there can be no

‘’cherry picking’’, a term that was earlier used in a warning by Mrs. Merkel, who also wishes to put the terms of the UK’s departure before negotiating the relationship. Also in the British letter are traces of warning against the worst option for both sides – Britain leaves the EU without a reached agreement by March 2019. This would occur in the case of no deal and not all of EU members agreeing to prolong the negotiations. In this case, the British cooperation in the fight against crime and terrorism would be weakened, according to Mrs. May. To preclude such an outcome, both negotiating parties ‘’should engage with one another constructively and respectfully, in a spirit of sincere cooperation’’. Amongst the issues laid down for discussion is an agreement about the rights of EU citizens living in the UK and UK citizens living in the EU. Unlike rumors claiming that people who have come to the UK from abroad before March 29 will get more rights than those arriving after the letter has been sent, Mrs. May has promised to keep all immigration rules as they are, as long as the UK remains an EU member. Furthermore, the relationship towards the Republic of Ireland, the only EU country sharing a land border with the

orth Korea tends to adopt rather exorbitant practises, but this time, their so-called “Fashion Parade”, reached unexpected heights. North Korea shocked the world when they showed off a bevy of its newest missile launchers and weaponry during the annual military parade hosted in commemoration of Kim Il-Sung in mid-April. Although, the current North Korean weapons cannot match the massive American or Russian armory, it proves a substantial step from what western experts had previously branded as a “Dog and Pony Show”.

BBC, ‘If the USA is planning a military attack against us, we will react with a nuclear pre-emptive strike by our own style and method’. Even though, the world has sighed in relief after North Korea's previous nuclear tests have failed, we are now confronted with new and, potentially, unknown weapons. An example of this is the KN11, a large, solid-fuel missile, that initiated a chain reaction of alarm bells across the world when it was displayed. As of now, our governments are not fully aware of the range nor of the damage such a missile could cause. Furthermore, military analysts are “not sure of the size of the potential nuclear warheads that would be placed on the KN-11”. Perhaps more worrying, the DPRK, has no incentive to stay within the barriers of UN resolutions, as can be seen by its infringing on more than five rules in 2017. Further concerns are the reactions of President Trump. In his presidential campaign, he showed clear antagonism towards the rogue regime and went to the The North Korean military parade only extents of claiming that “if necessary, he will take them down”. O On the contrary, Russian President Putin, has sent several thousand soldiers to the North Korean borders, as a sign of utmost readiness for a conflict; this act was initiated after the North Koreans directly addressed the Russians in late April as “the bear that should be put to sleep’. Finally, the South Koreans, with their new president, Moon Jae-in, opt for a sheerly diplomatic approach and hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict; however, all while keeping their backs covered by US fleets, loaded with decimating lethal weapons and aircrafts. The tension rises as North Korea carries out another ballistic missile test, days after the inauguration of the South Korean President. North Korea shows no incentive in stopping now. n Sunday May 7th, Emmanuel Macron was elected French President by a landslide, leaving the controversial Marine Le Pen in his wake. Macron’s victory brought a sigh of relief to France’s allies across Europe who feared Le Pen’s radical populist following and its potential to lead to a French leaving from EU as well. With all votes included, Macron won the election with 66% of the votes. As he later added “ I know the anger, the anxiety, the doubts that very many of you have also expressed. It's my responsibility to hear them”. He vowed to “work to recreate the link between Europe and its people, between Europe and citizens." Francois Hollande, the man who brought Macron into politics, added, “it confirms that a very large majority of our fellow citizens wanted to unite around the values of the Republic and show their attachment to the European Union". Macron had served in Holland’s unpopular socialist government for years, but since his election he has shown that he could actually be the one to revive, galvanize and stabilize France’s position in Europe. The BBC reports that most citizens feel Macron “stands for change”. ADÉLA CHROUSTOVÁ 1

World News & Current Affairs Last Dinosaurs

D

inosaurs are known to have lived in a period called the Mesozoic Era, which occurred between 230 and 65 million years ago. This was long before the first modern humans, Homo-Sapiens, surfaced. During the Mesozoic Era, the Cretaceous Period took place lasting approximately 79 million years; this was followed by the Jurassic Period, which we know today as the time of dinosaurs. According to numerous studies, Triceratops, Centosaurus, and even the T-Rex are considered dinosaurs that were an intrinsic part of this era, however, since 2014 The University of Bath has been conducting a study during which one of the last living African dinosaurs was discovered in a phosphate mine, northern Morocco. This species of dinosaur, Chenanisaurus Barbaricus, is reported to be the last known species to survive before a huge asteroid hit planet Earth 66 million years ago. This project was carried out for an international scientific collaborations aim to conserve and protect Morocco’s rich fossil heritage, with the creation and studying of the country’s paleontological collections. This study proves that a distinct fauna of dinosaurs was evolved in Africa after the Gondwana supercontinent broke into smaller continents and further suggests that this dinosaur species could be a smaller African later version of the North American T-Rex. March For Life Demonstration

O

n April 24th, 2017, over 5,000 protesters took the streets of Prague to mark the 17th annual Prague “March for Life” rally. Each year the crowd has grown, supported by people who wish to overturn the abortion law here in the Czech Republic (and worldwide). For some, like OG’s Debate League finalists, this is just one of the vital questions this brought up by an event like this. And the annual March for Life signifies different ideas for different people. Among them are people thinking of income inequality and asking: should the EU try to minimise the wage gap between the rich and the poor at the cost of hindering economic growth? Or should it foster a more prosperous system driven by fewer, more powerful individuals? Not only are emoluments, but services are also being questioned. Where do the rights of the state begin regarding forcing citizens to pay for healthcare they never

required? Who holds the responsibility for providing aid to the needy? And still, what place in our system will be made for the growing Muslim minority, and how can we secure it? It is these things, and more, that brought 5000+ people out to the streets to march, instead of talking. They hope to inspire others to clearly express their stances, while encouraging the rest of the country whether an abortion law that allows for the ending of nearly 70 unborn children with imminent potential, is in the best interest of our country. As Prague is swaying in a burst of confident, strongly expressed attitudes, debaters (from Open Gate) are fighting for victory by the arts of their logical and verbal abilities. Marchers have a tougher task - to win support of the public, they need to prove in their own life that having a family is a value worth sacrifices appealing to young people. ELIZABETH JANEČKOVÁ

This enormous “green attraction” was a joint effort between Disney and Duke Energy Power. This agreement allows Duke to own the panels, while Disney gets the electricity. While many people applaud Disney for shifting to green energy, most have focused their attention on the farm's playful shape—the iconic Mickey Mouse head— which can reportedly be seen from space. Local citizens have commented saying, “I love the hidden Mickeys. My family has always been kind of Disney freaks, and when we found out about [this plan] 10 years ago, it completely changed our trips.” Disney World leads the amusement park industry in both content and quality and now they hope to lead in sustainability. Disney hopes others will be inspired to follow their lead for a cleaner and more environmentally-friendly world. ADÉLA CHROUSTOVÁ

Taking Back Promises Made

P

resident Trump is a man of controversy, known for contradicting former President Obama at nearly every turn. After 135 days in the Office, President Trump has successfully dismantled Obamacare, demonized Obama's education policies and has now confirmed he will pull America out of the Paris Climate Change Agreement. What does this future mean for all of us? Being a business savvy Republican, it is almost certain that Trump will directly confront climate change to appease various business backers, especially as he has called global warming, on many occasions, a blatant Chinese “hoax”. During his campaign, Mr. Trump told voters that he “wanted to scrap agreements”, contrary to the national interest, all whilst advocating for invigoration of the coal industry. Unfortunately, this shows inconsistency in American leadership because when Barack Obama signed the G7 pact in late September 2016 it meant that the US became obliged to actively combat climate change through a series of homeland and external industry interventions. The US also set the bar very high for other countries who felt somewhat “pushed” into following the superpower’s lead. This later translated into strong government advertisements and educational programs on the danger of climate change and its causes. As of print, Trump has officially announced America’s leaving of the climate

Open Press 6 - June 2017

deal leaving many experts to speculate on the impacts of what this may mean. One thing is for certain, though Trump announced plans to leave, the actual exit from the accord is a 4-year exit, meaning that even if America does leave, unless President Trump is elected to a second term, the final days of his presidency would end with America still under obligation to meet these global emission standards. Essentially, whoever comes after Trump could effectively negate his exit plan (though that is years away). If the United States, who up until now has been an intrinsic leader in the fight against climate change, are to pull out, then many fear smaller countries will follow. This would mean that the agreement starts losing relevance and impact in today’s society, due to a lack of support; this later precipitates onto the concept of climate change itself. This is only amplified by Trump spiking the USA’s carbon footprint — primarily, by indulging into a coal-dominated industry — leading to a tightening in conditions for those remaining and possibly international condemnation targeted at America. President Trump has been in office for 135 days at the time of this printing. These days have been a suspenseful, anxiety-drenched rollercoaster ride for many. Will Trump revert to his Twitter account in the days ahead and let us know what he’s thinking, or will he stay professional and tackle this issue presidentially? JAMES ALEXAND CARR

unning… what a terrible activity it is for many people. However, if you have some motivation, it can be enjoyable. And if the motivation is to help someone else, who wouldn’t run as much as they can? There’s a project called Run and Help created by a company called Konto Bariéry, and our school has been participating for a few years now under the entusiastic leadership of Mr. Chara (pictured below).

Editor‘s Note and we hope more will come. The maximum our school ran was 1751 km in April 2016. The rules of this project are easy: spend some time in the fresh air together. The best time period to run is from April to the end of May. Every individual can pick a distance of his or her own choice and its not a competition, so nobody measures time and everybody wins; everyone donates their time, money, and running stamina! In the end, the collected funds are sent to Konto Bariéry who distributes it to those in need. From my own experience, I can say that it is a great project and the atmosphere is amazing. Ever since I ran my first RaH, running has became my favorite sport activity. I am a real fan of this project, and I hope that it will spread throughout the country so more can be helped! ith the approach of summer also comes the last edition of the year for our OG Chronicle. For this occasion we decided to change things up and try creating a common theme for our Interviews and Special Interests section. As the end of the school year is rapidly heading towards us, a lot of different school events are coming up. Therefore, we decided to unite our section under the theme of “school”. Though, to preserve the original motif of providing lots of variety to you, each of our writers wrote an additional interview or article about a special interest they have, so we hope you will enjoy that as well. And, with no further ado, we hope you enjoy the newspaper and we’ll see you in back here next fall. Enjoy your summer! VALERIE PYTJUK, SECTION EDITOR

Run and Help is a sequence of charity runs where anyone can participate, from individuals to large groups. The group can decide how much money they will donate per a given distance. For example, OG donates twenty Czech crowns per kilometer. Of course, that’s just the minimum contribution, you can always give more. All the money donated then helps people with medical problems. ith all the spring and summer months also comes the festival season. People are getting ready for Coachella, Burning Man, Sound on Sound Fest, or even Majáles and Rock for People. But it’s not all just about the music festivals. Unfortunately, such an inhuman event as the Yulin Festival takes place in China in the upcoming months as well. The Yulin Festival, commonly referred to as the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival, starts on June 21st and is an annual Chinese tradition to mark the summer solstice. Between 10,000 to 15,000 dogs and cats are slaughtered for their meat during the 10 days of the festival. Since it takes place in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, these poor animals travel hundreds of miles crammed in trucks, undernourished, barely able to breathe and often end up with their limbs broken. No wonder many of them don't survive the transport in such conditions. Those that are still alive are later put on display in the public markets for customers to chose from and to be sure the meat is fresh. Once they choose, the dog is skinned, roasted or boiled alive, sometimes even dragged behind a car until it dies. Some believe the dog meat tastes better thanks to the adrenaline it produces when it dies in fear. Some of these unfortunate dogs are seen wearing a collar which suggests they could have been stolen from their homes and families.

Panda Poop is Earning Money

ecently, specifically during the Eastern holidays, I got a chance to make my tiny, little dream come true and finally meet the cutest tea producer of one of the world’s most expensive tea. It happened in our German-speaking neighbour’s capital. A place that left me speechless though, and not only because I was sick and lost my voice, was Schonbrunn Zoo, which is one of the most popular attraction in Vienna and built in 1752 also being the oldest zoo in the world. Many of zoo experts and non-experts say that it is also one of the most attractive ones. To be honest, my feelings were mixed at the beginning, Insectariums being the first place I visited. But then it got happier when a hippopotamus, not just a hippo, I say an enormous hippopotamus transferred his enormous happiness on me while occupying his whole enormous water tank and swimming better than my best inner swimmer in PE. What I saved to be the best for last and what made my day, maybe possibly even my year, was a fluffy thing, considered one of the world’s cutest animals. Scientists actually speculate that seeing this furry animal may excite circuitry in our brains that is normally related to interaction with humans. Abigail Tucker explained this cuteness factor in her article for Smithsonian.com. “...Babies have supersized eyes, and pan-

das’ trademark black patches make their eyes appear larger by a factor of ten.” Some great news is that last year the panda disappeared from the red list and is no longer considered endangered. In the past decade, the giant panda population numbers have increased by 17%. Their adorable appearance has actually played a big role in their safeguarding. They are the most popular endangered animals to donate to, which means look matters, kids! No, of course personality is the main thing and speaking of that, pandas have a really specific one: they eat,

sleep, and poop—a lot. And that poop adds up, making it the key ingredient in the world’s most expensive tea called Panda Dung, costing around $200. But who wouldn’t like the tea from the world’s cutest animal? This is just one reason why organizations like the World Wildlife Fund has successfully helped save the panda from the red list. Clearly, its never too late to change the future. So, save bamboo trees and drink more panda poop tea!

Just the fact that these monstrosities have been going on for over 400 years is sickening. Dogs don't deserve to be treated with such cruelty, they have the right to live happily amongst humans in loving families and in the environment where they are treated well. The local governTEREZA CHÁROVÁ ment continues promising to take action every year, but the officials claim it is organized by private businesses, and they are unable to prevent it. If something isn’t done to prevent this immediately, thousands of innocent dogs will be killed in a little over a month’s time. Please do not ignore this awful truth and visit the website written down below to sign a petition created by the Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project, whose mission is to reduce animal suffering in China and Taiwan. Approximately 285,000 more supporters are needed to reach the goal of 3 million signatures. Please help this organization out and possibly save the lives of thousands of dogs. https://www.change.org/p/mr-chenwu-yulin-governor-please-shut-down-the -yulin-dog-meat-festival-in-guangxichina VALERIE PYTJUK

Special Interests & Interviews If Not Us, Who?

N

ext April 2018, OG will be joining the worldwide conversation. For the last three months, a select team has been planning and now it is confirmed that Open Gate has been granted a license to host our very own TEDx Conference!

Imagine... tudents who attended TEDxYouth organized by the International School of Prague. Who will we be inviting to speak? We are going to invite eight speakers, from scientists to artists to writers. For the time being we aren’t going to tell you the names just yet. Everything is in the process—just know that the lineup is exciting and powerful. Why did the team choose these people? All of them are experts in their fields, truly world experts. We think they have a lot to pass on to everyone. In addition, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see these people in real life.

I sat down with Honza Hrebík from Kvarta A, the PR Manager for this event, and asked him a few questions about the event itself. As PR Manager, Honza’s job is to promote the TEDx event and communicate with the public. Here is an inside look into this prestigious OG event.

I

magine you were a prince or a princess, a king or a queen… Can you do it? I think most of you can and even more than that. I believe you are able to imagine the beautiful dresses you would wear and the castle you would live in as that member of royalty, the gardens surrounding the castle or the beautiful view you would have from your room. You know what is interesting about this? There are no two people who would imagine this in the same way.

Who is working on the OG TEDx Team? There are around twenty people helping preparing this event - both teachers and students. Everyone has a role in this; we have class representatives, PR experts, photographers...we need the whole team to work well. So far I have to say we are doing good.

What is TEDx? TEDx is an individually organized “event” under the umbrella of the international TED organization. It is organized by an independent group (TED fans, cities, schools, various organizations), but it works on the same principle as TED conferences, sharing talks under the slogan “ideas worth spreading”.

What more can you tell us now? After long discussions and voting, we chose the theme of “If Not Us, Who?” We think this theme really brings together the ideas of the speakers we want to invite and our goal of spreading new info out into the TED commuIt is quite an obvious fact, but that nity. doesn’t diminish its meaning. Moco Museum of Amsterdam

M

oco, also known as the Modern Contemporary Museum Amsterdam, provides a extensive range of modern and contemporary art available to the general public. Moco Museum focuses on proven pioneers and protagonists, the socalled “Rock Stars of Art” within disparate art movements.

The Moco Museum is located in Villa Alsberg, which is set in the middle of the Amsterdam Museumplein along with many other famous museums, such as the Van Gogh museum and next to the legendary I Amsterdam sign. This townhouse was designed in 1904 by Eduard Cuypers, cousin of the renowned Pierre Cuypers who was responsible for the Rijksmuseum, which is on the opposite side of the square. The museum consists of two exhibitions - one by Banksy and the following one by Salvador Dalí. Bansky’s truly unique exhibition caught my eye. Well known for his outdoor work that you can find all over the world, you can find many examples of his indoor art at the Moco Museum. These 4

pieces are owned by collectors who had bought them at other Banksy exhibitions. The Moco Museum is displaying all his famous pieces like Laugh Now, Barcode, Girl with Balloon, Kids on Guns, Pulp Fiction, Flower Thrower, Monkey Queen, Kate Moss, Bomb Hugger, Soup Can and many more. There are also a few pieces which were rescued from the rubble of buildings that had been torn down around the city. The Moco Museum is currently the only museum that holds Bansky’s indoor art. Just to give you a small insight of how possibly could Bansky’s art look. Just imagine - when you hear the word tank, the first world that come to your mind are war, terror, destruction, fear and sadness. You would imagine a depressing piece of art that would bring all these emotions to you, but Banksy displays a tank with a pair of cute pink bunny ears and a perfectly tied blue bowtie. Unexpected. Another example is when Banksy displayed a military guard with a yellow smiley face instead of his normal straight face.

From the examples above it is selfevident that artwork by Banksy truly unique. His artwork is also characterized by striking images combined with slogans, often engaged with political themes, satirically critiquing war, capitalism, hypocrisy and greed. Banksy uses common subjects including rats, apes, policemen, members of the royal family, and children. Many times, Bansky’s work comes out as ironic, sarcastic and odd. One of Bansky’s most famous pieces, and one of my personal favourites, is called Girl with Balloon. In this work an innocent girl is reaching for a red heartshaped balloon that is just beyond her grasp, and the words “there is always hope” are placed behind her This simple image has stimulated interest and discussion across the art world, and many different interpretations have arisen. The image evokes the idea that hope is essential, giving people motivation to continue despite seemingly dreary circumstances. Love, symbolized by the balloon, is a fundamental human need and must be cherished. (People even have tattoos of the balloon girl!) This popular piece has been copied onto canvas prints and posters around the world. After visiting the Moco Museum Banksy has found his own special place in my art; next time I visit Amsterdam, I will definitely go to the Moco again! Hopefully, you will have the same amazing opportunity one day soon! SARAH MULDOON

ty of things, accountants are able to work with big numbers because they can imagine the equations in their heads. I don’t think an accountant would be able to imagine a 3D model of a building as well as some architect, and the architect probably wouldn’t be able to solve difficult equations just in his head. Apart from designers, architects and accountants, there is this one profession that uses the imagination probably the most - writers. I believe many of you have read some book and marveled about how realistic the characters are, how elaborate the world is or how original the plot is. And you thought to yourself, it certainly must have been hard to write that book. I agree, it must have been a lot of work. And it certainly required a lot of imagination. Imagination is the greatest quality of a writer, greater than the ability to write engagingly. While engaging writing is an ability, and you can practice it, vivid and powerful imagination is a gift that has to be inborn. That is also why writers are so praiseworthy: for their ability to bring entire new worlds to life and feed our hunger for something unknown and exciting in our lives, for the fantastical adventures our imaginations can’t create themselves. So what about you? Do you have the imagination of an accountant, a designer, or more like the one of a writer? JOSEFÍNA DUŠKOVÁ

Special Interests & Interviews Taste of Brittany—Interview with Tea Vulasová

pril 24th was the day our French speaking students from Sexta started their journey to one of the French provinces in western France, Brittany. After nearly two weeks, they returned full of experiences. From a report on the Open Gate web page we know how the whole trip went. So I decided to interview Tea Vulasová, one of the travellers, with specific questions relating to her personal experience and memories from her time in Brittany.

O

Speaking of humor, do French people have a specific type of humor, was there some joke they said that you didn’t get? I would not say there are differences between Czech humor and French humor.

Was it hard to start communicating or find a topic for discussion? I had no problem communicating with my correspondents/French teenagers, I guess we discussed pretty much the same topics as with my friends who speak Czech. I even met a Polish girl who was already fluent in French, but we had a great time trying to speak in Czech and Polish with each other. The same applies to my host family - once I learned how to respond to questions like “How was school today?” or “Would you like to eat pancakes for breakfast?” I had a good time speaking with them. My host family was interested in the Czech culture, so I described them what we eat during Christmas (they Have you experienced some misunder- were surprised) and then I showed them what standing you found funny afterwards? our president looks like (they were even more Of course! pen Gate is full of excellent activities; you’ll never get bored here. That said, here is an event which combined fun, cooking, teamwork and food! The event was the essential “Food Day” which celebrated its 3rd anniversary. Food Day is an event where each dormitory floor has its own team made up with three people. The whole afternoon, teams prepare their meals for the judges: “professional” food experts. What about the food? Something special you fell in love with or you were eating for the first time? I had four sweet pancakes (“crêpes”) for breakfast every single morning. This means I ate 56 sweet pancakes in two weeks - a good number, right? Since Brittany is known for its delicious pancakes, I had to taste even the salty ones (“galettes”). My personal favourite was galette complète which contains ham, cheese, egg and salty butter, and I ate five of them. One interesting fact about Brittany is, that they have butter with added salt in it and are extremely proud of it. When they go on a holiday to the south of France, they carry salt with them because they are not used to eating the butter without the salt. Did you have any expectations about the trip and were they fulfilled? I had already been to Brittany thus I knew it is going to be cold there. And yes, it was cold. TEREZA CHÁROVÁ

One of the most important things in the movie, the one thing it wouldn't be the same without, are all the magical songs from the original movie that was released 26 years ago. As a fan of the first, I went to see the new movie to see if it could compare to my childhood favorite. I worried this new production remade into live -action would be a 21st century comedy. But this remake is anything but disappointing. In fact, it answers a lot of questions from the classic animated movie that had been left unanswered. For example, how did everyone in the little town next to a palace forget there was a huge kingdom with a royal family nearby? Or what happened to Belle’s mother? In the animated version Belle’s mother isn't even mentioned once, but in the remake we get to know everything about the woman Belle was deeply curious about.

always had a special place in my heart. I was curious to see if this one particular scene stayed as enchanted as it was in the original. Even though Lumiére, the candelabra, changed a few words in the new version, it lived up to my very high expectations and made me as happy as it always did. In conclusion, there weren't any major missteps between the new live-action remake and the original classic. Emma Watson portrayed Belle better than anyone else could, even though she added some more feminism to the character (but that never hurt anyone!). It was refreshing to see a Disney classic turned into a movie played by real actors, and seeing the magic of animation remade into a live movie. LAUREN MULDOON

Every month, Draga Čermáková, the organiser of Food Day, unveils a new interesting theme. Past days have included themes such as soup, chlebíček, pudding, pancakes, bramborák, salads, but the most popular one, by far, is sushi. The best part of these food days are the results of meals which will be awarded and the final degustation by the hungry students of Open Gate. May 18th was the second essential sushi day, and I was so excited that I signed up to be a judge for this event to taste some sushi. I was hired as a food expert which is not an easy job. Students did a good job preparing really tasty and creative sushi for us, like the Sushi hamburger you see pictured here.

Unfortunately, the food topics occasionally repeat, mainly because we are out of ideas and the dormitory equipment is not able to create more food days. Nevertheless, these food days are very important for students because it teaches us how to cook, cooperate and enjoy time spent together at the dorms. In conclusion, I hope a lot of people are going to be interested in future food days. Ultimately, don’t be afraid to try to cook something sometimes—it may be delicious! Hope to see you all at the next Food Day on October. ALEXANDER FEDOROV

Social Commentary & Opinion The Tolerance of Intolerance

W

e, and millennials especially, deem ourselves tolerant and unprejudiced. But each and every single day we tolerate intolerance. We tolerate racist, homophobic and sexist comments, sometimes in our own homes. But how can this possibly happen when our society is the most tolerant it has ever been? The explanation is simple; the principle of tolerance is flawed. Its concept claims that to be truly tolerant, a person must tolerate everything. Yes, that also includes intolerance. As a result, this era’s open-mindedness has been leading to the so-called paradox of tolerance. Its definition states that it is a consequence of unlimited tolerance, which allows intolerant forces to limit and eventually destroy the concept of tolerance. Consequently, people in today’s society tolerate others’ hate or discrimination simply because they believe anything else would be directly opposing tolerance. For that belief, the same questions remain, ‘Where does tolerance end and intolerance begin?’ or ‘What exactly is too much?’ These are questions that nobody can accurately answer because the limits are different for every country and every single human being. But that does not mean we should

Dangers of

blindly tolerate or ignore intolerance. Each person has to find his stand, either one continues to thoughtlessly tolerate everything or that person sets his or her limits regarding tolerance - be it a racially discriminating comment on Twitter or your brother’s homophobic remarks during family dinner. At that point, one may not be completely tolerant, but he or she protects his beliefs. That person remains intolerant towards intolerance - the only position capable of preventing the paradox of tolerance. It is strongly understood that today’s world is very tolerant and requires no interference. That feeling is even enhanced by the strong presence of tolerance-promoting social media posts. But acknowledging the fact that the current U.S. President and France’s almostelected one both built their political campaigns on hate and achieved tremendous votes suggests otherwise. Each of us needs to realize that at some point tolerance simply ends and the reign of intolerance begins. If the goal is to avoid the paradox of tolerance, something has to change…or the only people truly living in tolerance will remain white and privileged, and most likely men. TEREZA JAKOUBKOVÁ

magine living in an absolutely tolerant world. Your reaction to the image is surely positive, even enthusiastic. This level of excitement is quite predictable, because you might have already imagined a peaceful place of content. In such a world, nobody is mean or envious and all live in utter harmony. Additionally, hatred and prejudice have disappeared. It would surely be a thrill to live in such world, I imagine you thinking. However, all of the above is not true. Although it sounds lovely, a hundred percent tolerant world would not be such a delightful place, in fact. The official definition of tolerance is being able to accept and tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that one does not necessarily agree with. So, absolute tolerance would mean absolute freedom of opinion. On one hand, freedom of opinion is essential for creating democracy. But on the other hand, when there is no constraint on what one can think or believe, people tend to experiment with extremist ideas. If we lived in a 100% tolerant world, we would, in other words, lose control over what is unacceptable. For in a world where everyone tolerates everything, one is no longer aware of the possible dangers which come from loosening the reins. As a result, one becomes immune, and therefore prone to extremism. There is no wrong thinking in a perfectly tolerant world, hence no precautions to it. And so, the existence of an absolutely

t is on the news, it’s on Facebook, and it’s in state policy. Unlike Kylie Jenner’s breakup, migration doesn’t seem to fade. Logically so; we still haven’t found a solution. What is the problem? Hatred. When these (poor, desperate) people come, a two-sided conflict is born. Here foreigners hate the locals and vice versa. What a mess.. Now this article will bring no new revealing solution, for I, a teenager, must humbly acknowledge it is not in my capacity to come up with one. What it will do instead is to shed a new light on how pressing this conflict is, not only on the extensively debated moral side, but especially the practical one. An ever-rising number of people around the world abandon their homes in hope of a better life in Europe. Leaving their lives behind, they pursue what they see as the promised land. However, as soon as they enter, their illusions are brutally shattered. The city at the mountaintop has its door shut. Not only are they met with anti-Semitism and called swine, but also treated like them. Lockdown, insults and poor prospects for the future is a perfect characterization of a migrant’s daily struggle. No wonder it is so easy for radicals to enlarge their support. On the other side, a negative attitude is understandable too. It is fair for a lower class, working male to be afraid of losing his job. It is fair for a woman to be afraid to go swimming with males who don’t think she has the right to reveal her skin. And even if it was not justifiable, it is un6

Tolerance and the Elderly

The Challenge We Face

derstandable given the rising percentage of people living under stress. No wonder radical parties are on a rocket-like rise. We are put to a challenge. It is clear that the model exercised in the status quo is everything but sustainable. To surpass it, we have to go back in time. Once, there also was a culture thriving and expanding. It failed. “Why?” I hear you cry. Well Roman culture was clashing with migration and in the long run, the policy of unfriendliness resulted in the disintegration of the empire. We are at a crossroads and, unlike the Romans, we still have both time and power to steer for a peaceful solution. So, let me pursue further this polemic to a conclusion. It is easy to spark conflict in our heterogenous, hostile society, but that is not leading us anywhere. The quest for finding a mutual ground is more pressing than ever, a question of life and death – both figuratively and literally. We still have time and we’d better use it, before we descend into ashes. Time for a debate is over, now deed must prevail. Tolerance is not a choice anymore. VIKTOR ŘÍHA

any consider the elderly rigidly intolerant. They do so based on their personal experience or common awareness. It is true that some encounters with the older part of our society are unpleasant, to say the least. Everyone has once seen an uneasy dispute between a grumpy elderly and a shop assistant over the lack of discounted goods in a supermarket. In that situation, the elderly person has probably acted unduly; therefore, all the other shoppers have judged the sharp elderly person intolerant. Consequently, after this single experience, they create a universal stance on all elderly people, a notion of intolerance and narrow-mindedness. In addition, some of us tend to think that we get less tolerant as we grow old. According to this statement, we start off with a certain amount of tolerance as children and then gradually lose it whilst reaching a certain age. While it is, with exceptions, right that we become more conservative throughout our lives, it is not generally true that we become intolerant. In my opinion, though one can enlarge or reduce his/her level of tolerance in life, one cannot deny his personality. In other words, if you are born less tolerant, you will more or less remain the same with increasing age. Older people are hence not intolerant because of their age, but because of their nature. Also, every aspect of their so-called intolerance stems

from their viewpoint on life because deliberation in an early age means a staid and less open minded attitude in an advanced age. Furthermore, young people often grumble about how the elderly are intransigent to controversial or taboo themes. All this complaining is, nevertheless, not a result of intolerance in the elderly but, on the contrary, in the youth. It is the outcome of a great generation gap and incomprehension between the two different, yet similar, groups. For it is not the nature of the people that has changed, but the conditions they live in. The everyday struggle for safety and covering basic needs has been replaced by the desire for likes on Facebook or Instagram. From this example, it is clear that priorities as well as worldview have shifted, which is completely understandable as the world we live in is much more comfortable than it was seventy years ago. Therefore, it is in a way more just for an old person to grouch about the lack of what he needs than for a youngster to grumble about his “necessities.” It is due to their life experience, which is diametrically different to that of a millennial person, that seniors view certain matters or display opinions otherwise. All in all, next time you see a grumpy old man, do not jump to judging his tolerance, but think of your tolerance toward his age. ANNE-MARIA MATEJAS

Social Commentary & Opinion The Pros And Cons of Capital Punishment

P

RO: On one hand, capital punishment has unquestionable benefits. One of such benefits is the fact that you punish those citizens who behave badly. The main idea is that for everything unlawful you do, you get punished. Additionally, your punishment is directly proportional to your harmful deed.

For instance, when you are driving and exceed the speed limit, you pay a fine. When you steal money, you go to jail. This is the same logic when it comes to capital punishment. When you do something really atrocious, for instance murder someone, you deserve nothing less than the death penalty. Moreover, the ones who harm society in such a significant way should be gotten rid of, so they cannot harm the society any longer. These facts make capital punishment justifiable, in my opinion. By being a citizen of certain state which allows the death penalty, you agree that if you break the law in such a significant and injurious way, you may face the death penalty. Additionally, capital pun-

ishment works for the greater good of the society. The government has an obligation to provide safety for its citizens, and with the death penalty, it gets rid of such hurtful people. Furthermore, it is beneficial for the society to see the government protecting its citizens, in times of harm and danger. The society needs the action of the government. When one kills another human being, the government should not be lax and should react in certain way. The right way is a capital punishment, for not only has the government an obligation to punish the criminal, it should also punish him or her by a sentence directly proportional to his or her crime. In conclusion, we should tolerate the death penalty for multiple reasons. Firstly, capital punishment is the right punishment for the worst criminals. Secondly, it is justifiable because the people know what happens when they do unlawful things. Lastly, the death penalty serves the greater good of society by showing that the government it taking care of its business.

C

ON: On the other hand, even though the death penalty may be considered a good punishment, the question is; do we want to punish the criminals or to improve them? The problem with capital punishment is that its consequences are permanent. Since the person is executed, an opportunity for a second chance or for improvement is eliminated. The government should be trying to make its people better and give them a second chance. If the government gives criminals a second chance, the criminals could improve and understand what their mistakes were. The worst-case scenario of not implementing capital punishment is still much better than killing a person. The worst-case scenario is that the lawbreaker will not improve, but he or she is still going to sit in jail, probably for the rest of his or her life. There, they would have to think deeply about what an atrocious deed their crime was. Also, they would have to live with the guilt for the rest of their lives. In my opinion, even if the criminal does not realize that their actions were unacceptable, he or she would have to at least live with the guilt forever and that is the worst punishment. Additionally, if the government is claiming that a murder is a bad thing to do and should be punished accordingly, why should be the government be allowed to do the exact same thing and not only go unpunished, but also should have the right to kill other people as a punishment. The government is the head

Religious Tolerance: My Beliefs are My Choice

D

uring different parts of our lives, we contemplate different concepts related to tolerance, and we notice different instances of intolerance. However, one concept throughout history takes the lead. At a time when Donald Trump is President of the U.S., and France almost elected a woman who once compared Muslims praying in the streets to the Nazi occupation, religious intolerance is unfortunately becoming very relevant. We like to pretend we live in a tolerant world, but building political campaigns on the hate of different religions (and winning), hardly seems tolerant. The same goes for banning people who practise a religion that extremists use to justify their actions from entering a country. Throughout history, people worshipping in a certain religions have been targeted, discriminated, and sometimes even killed for their beliefs. But towards the end of the 20th century, religious tolerance was on the rise. However, ever since the tragedy of September 11th, 2001, dislike, or even hatred, of certain religions has rapidly increased, especially regarding Muslims. This is evident in the rise of religious hate crimes and the interference of the government in worship. Lately, the main stimuli of religious tolerance has been politicians who encourage intolerance in order to produce fear and hatred. These feelings are then used during speeches and campaigns to receive as many votes as possible. Yes, Donald Trump can be blamed for

the increase in hate crimes driven by religion in US, but not even he can be blamed for religious intolerance. The problem was and always will be fear. People fear violent attacks, and some even a religious takeover. However, a religion or a belief is never at fault - people are. It is people who can transform a belief into action. It is the individuals that radicalize the religion, and use it to hurt others or even whole countries that are behind horrendous actions. No matter what a person says he fears in regard to a certain religion, it is not what he fears. That person is scared of something he does not know, and instead of trying to understand, he hides behind the veil of intolerance. On the other side of the spectrum are atheists - a group that has no religious beliefs, but is still not tolerated, especially in the U.S. According to research, more than 50% of Americans would be opposed to a family member marrying an atheist and around 43% would not vote for an atheist presidential candidate, placing atheists last – behind Muslims. In addition, in seven states, it is illegal to hold public office if one is an atheist. Even though this group never faces any harsh discrimination comparable to African Americans or Muslims, they are still facing intolerance. There is no direct cause of the dislike, but polls suggest that the intolerance of Americans most likely stems from the belief that someone who is not religious is immoral or unpatriotic.

In the Czech Republic, we hardly ever notice this since the majority of citizens are atheists. The nature of our atheism in unknown, but during my short life, it has been the norm. I also like to think that we are believers, but simply not in the world’s most widespread religions. However, as a result, we are often the ones being intolerant towards someone’s belief. The Czech Republic does not impose any restrictions similar to those in the USA, but our religious viewpoint affects our everyday lives. Czechs sometimes feel uneasy when discussing religion or talking to a very religious person. We are not used to that type of conversation, and more importantly, we are not knowledgeable in the field. We fear what we don’t know. As stated, fear of the unknown is the driving force of religious intolerance. All in all, whether a person believes in unicorns, Kim Kardashian or God, it is his belief and his choice to do so. Tolerating the beliefs of others establishes one as a person – a tolerant one. You may not tolerate pineapple on pizza, but you need to be tolerant of who or what a person prays to. TEREZA JAKOUBKOVÁ

of the state and should be a role model for all the citizens living in its nation. By allowing the death penalty, the government is sending a very confusing message. Basically, the government is saying that even though murder is unlawful, the criminal will be punished with the exact same crime. By this action, the government is doing the same deed as the criminals. However, the government should not commit crimes but it also should be as moral as possible and in order to be viewed as a role model. In conclusion, we should not tolerate the death penalty because the government should aim to improve the criminals and also act exemplary. In conclusion, there are many pros and cons to this specific problem. The main clash remains between the government’s decision between improving criminals and punishing them. Even though, most of the countries ban the capital punishment, the ones, which permit it, vary from most developed (USA) to undeveloped countries (Saudi Arabia) considering human rights. Extravagance

riting in the social commentary section is a beautiful opportunity to polemize over the current state of society. What is happening? What has changed? I wondered. If you ask elders if today is different than it was half a century ago, the answer is an overwhelming yes. However, when asked why, none will be able to persuasively pinpoint one reason, event or trend considerably responsible for the change: answers vary. Clearly this means that there is a larger entity, source of the visible causes quoted by the elderly. I personally blame individuality. While a few decades ago the emphasis would be put on one’s obedience, now individual interests are embraced. Successful people, contemporary role models, blame their success on avoiding mainstream. Individuality is involved in everything from abandoning family for career or the creation of a success-led society, to something as trivial as iPhone covers. Clothing, houses, cars, TV adverts and even meals at McDonalds embody independence and allow for customizability. Only unique styles are met with appreciation, merely strengthening the trend even further. But that’s not all. We either overlook or simply don’t see these changes – remember, no elder told me individuality is accountable for the change. Here it’s important to acknowledge that these alterations when examined one by one have little to no impact. However, let them stack up and you have your entity. Now I don’t say such development is harmful in any which way. In fact, it is the opposite! In the end, it is extravagance for which our age will be remembered. VIKTOR ŘÍHA 7

ave you seen any one of the Jurassic tetralogy movies? I bet you have, or at least one of them. If not, then I am 100% sure that you know what they are about. In short, the dream was to build the greatest zoo ever — the zoo with real dinosaurs. But the security grid shuts off, the dinosaurs escape their habitats and begin to move freely all over the island while the people in great danger and their lives depend on whether or not they can run away from deadly fangs of a giant Tyrannosaurus or a Velociraptor. Would you dare to visit Jurassic Park? Well, if you are brave enough, you now have the chance!. Universal Studios in Hollywood, California, as well as the one in Orlando, Florida, have opened a thrilling attraction based on Jurassic Park. It is a water ride that follows the concepts of the first movie: at first, everything seems calm and fine, but then it all goes wrong.

The very first thing the visitors see on the ride is the main Jurassic Park gate the very same one as in the movie. As it opens, the voice of John Hammond can be heard, saying the immortal movie quote ‘Welcome to the Jurassic Park.’ Now, the visitors in the raft are being impressed by giants such as Ultrasauruses, Stegosauruses or Hadrosauruses, all in their natural habitats. However, the scenery drastically changes and the broken fence of the Velociraptors habitat appears as well as the Dilophosaurus. As the ride continues, a cracking sound introduces a jeep falling from a cliff - exactly the same way as the jeep in the movie. More Dilophosauruses appear and the raft goes upwards into a building, where Velociraptors parade their fangs and claws. Then, we can hear the dreadful roar, and a Tyranosaurus’s head appears at the ceiling, as it crushes through the roof. After a while, once the ride continues into the dark, the T-Rex attacks again, in his complete and enormous size, roaring and trying to catch the raft with his long and sharp fangs, presenting the peak of the entire ride. Thankfully, the raft goes down a 25 meters long slide into safety from the T-Rex, Velociraptors and all other dinosaurs. I, personally, think that meeting these giants face-to-face would be amazing! you. So, hold on tight and visit the Park. KAROLÍNA HRBALOVÁ

Français Enquête

Vive la Bretagne

C

Guten Appetit!

Schikurs der Quinta

Meine Erfahrung mit deutschem Essen

I

M: Hola Johans. Gracias por estar aquí. J: Gracias a ti.

Europa?

F

Anna zmizela a dívka s ní též. O chvíli později do místnosti vběhla další dívka.

Maminka

Struny przní letmost vzduchu a hudba zazní v tomto duchu.

Do New Yorku mě už nikdy nikdo nedostane!“ Hailey pohodila jemnými plavými vlasy a rozesmála se, modrozelené oči přivírala proti sluníčku. Uličky, náměstí, obchůdky, trhy, kostely, Vltava i dívky.

Náhle mu něco padlo do oka. I ručičky byly zlaté, nehybně ukazující půl čtvrté. „Koupím je,“ sdělil Chris muži u pultu pomalou angličtinou a z kapsy vylovil několik bankovek. Prodavač pokýval hlavou, prohlédl si hodinky a tužkou něco načmáral na roh novin. Číslici 600. Chrisovi hned došlo, o co se jedná – cena hodinek. Dal muži patřičnou částku a odešel.

Tma

Když kvůli tobě potemnělo i nebe.

V očích mu zaštípal písek a oslepil ho.

… Avšak trápilo mě jediné, a to velice. …

„Musíš pryč,“ promluvila dívka anglicky. I hlas měla stejný jako Hailey. Jak věděla, že má mluvit anglicky? „Já…“ blekotal Chris nesrozumitelně. „Odejdi! Chris upadl a svět zčernal. *** Na tváři ho štípla facka. Chris široce rozevřel oči a prudce se posadil. Hailey klečela vedle něho. „Chrisi?“ zeptala se Hailey starostlivě. „Co se stalo?“ „Myslím… Myslím, že jsem cestoval časem,“ zašeptal zmateně. V dlani ucítil něco tvrdého a chladného.

To snad nehty si mám hlodat? A za co, řekni čtenáři. No, proč, na co?
