hristmas carols were soon replaced by the political slogans of the nine presidential candidates. Czechs spent November and December choosing from the well-known political figures like Miloš Zeman and Mirek Topolánek, as well as those perhaps unheard of before. Open Gate has, among other schools, exercised its right to contribute to the polls with our students joining the 43,559 who voiced their opinion at the beginning of December 2017. Open Gate students opted for Jiří Drahoš with 41% while in the all-country student results he won a third of all votes. The second place in Babice was awarded to Mirek

he OG Science Fair was a highly successful event, organized on Monday, 11th of December, for all students in the sports hall. During the afternoon, everyone could come see the greatest projects the students made. I had the great pleasure of being part of the competition, as I was among those who managed to qualify into the final round. All those who succeed in the lower gymnasium attended the meeting 30.11. 10:00 am and for upper gymnasium on 1.12. There, the teachers gave everyone the necessary instructions: where they needed to be, what time the fair starts etc. Everyone had to remake their project into a special poster from the company AMAVET. The poster had to be done to the Friday before the event.

When D-day came, the people who presented went to the school cafeteria for
Topolánek, while underage voters elsewhere pushed there Miloš Zeman with almost 20% Marek Hilšer followed with 13.39% in the country and Jiří Hynek with 9% in OG. The fourth place in our school went to Zeman, as well as to Pavel Fischer who achieved the same position in student elections across the board. Student voices are, however, far from being an accurate indicator of the nation’s preferences. In the last and first direct presidential elections in 2012, our current president only managed to get 9.4% of students’ votes. Understandably, students are often categorized as one large social group in which we put our hopes, the voting preferences vary drastically from grammar schools to vocational schools, simplified: preferring either Drahoš or Zeman respectively. In the student presidential elections, there were 171 grammar schools out of the total of 384 schools, which is not a good representation of the Czech Republic’s social stratification. This historic second direct vote for our president was anticipated with fear by those who understood that the abundance of prospective candidates could only disperse the votes into several smaller and easily defeatable fractions. Such expectations were expressed for example snack and subsequently went to retrieve their posters. There were 27 perspective groups of students pitching their wellprepared presentations. Each team had one hour to prepare before the start. The first three hours were open to the lower gymnasium, where attendees had the opportunity to listen to various guests. Some of whom were: Mr. Lukačevič, Research Assistant at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, who talked about Mars and space; Mr. Medřický, who talked about robotics; and Mrs. Sochorová, who described the elated life of a scientist. After the first period, the presenters were rewarded with a well-deserved break. The second half was for the upper gymnasium, where guests could switch roles and learn something new from a student presentation, while evaluating their investigation. After school ended, the fair was open to the public. At six o’clock the verdict was struck, with the “Does chewing gum help us concentrate” sweeping up most of the awards. However, it is important to note, that winning was not as important as the effort invested. Students learned a great deal and experienced a professional environment. So remember, it’s not about winning; it’s about the happiness of sharing the outcome of your work.

by OG History teacher Mr. Tomášek who, when asked for a forecast on the first day of the election, commented ‘’Many of the candidates are homogenous. I am afraid their voters can be dissolved.” In the first round of the January 2018 elections, Czech voters have again shown greater preference for Miloš Zeman than the average student. Indeed, young people have favoured Jiří Drahoš, Pavel Fischer or Marek Hilšner. Could the youth adhere to their political opinions as they become older, thus being able to shift the Czech political scene? This was the question addressed by the Czech youth, not only students from Open Gate.
hen Christmas comes, it is a long tradition at Open Gate that the students, teachers, staff and guests sit together and enjoy a meal: the OG Christmas Dinner. Again in 2017, our cooks prepared amazing dishes and with snowflakes falling outside, a truly Christmaslike atmosphere was set! About two weeks before the dinner, a survey was sent so everyone could choose their preferred main course. The choices contained both traditional and slightly unconventional Christmas foods: salmon, carp, or schnitzel - with potatoes, or potato salad. A vast majority of students opted for a schnitzel-salad combination, and I must say that it was brilliant and I am sure the other options were delicious as well. The entrée was accompanied by a tuna paste appetizer and the

any regard quality education as an inherent prerequisite to success, however, most neglect the importance of extracurricular activities in one's future. Luckily, we at Open Gate, have the unique opportunity to self-actualize our passions and develop our academic skills through the vast repertoire of after-school clubs such as photography, athletics, journalism, debate, and martial arts. The flagship of student life at Open Gate has evolved into a group of academic clubs - Journalism, Debate, and Entrepreneurship - with, when accumulated, more than 80 student members. Academic clubs and societies are mostly student-led organizations promoting cooperation and coordination among members, whilst maintaining an erudite atmosphere and profiling its gradual improvements through academic reports. As of recently, the Open Gate Business & Entrepreneurship Society has been established, the preeminent goal of which is to ostensibly develop and broaden the financial orientation of many students. In five club meetings, the students have managed to grasp the basics of binary options, be familiarized with the functioning of numer-

ous types of businesses, and are now transferring their knowledge into the demo-accounts on the stock market. Lukáš Ceplický, a co-founder of the club, states that he “appreciates the enthusiasm and elation from students in their quest for knowledge,” although “they are operating on one of the most complex financial systems.” Vice President and co -founder, Matthew Šmidberský, adds that he “firmly believes that this outlet into the real-world of business will be of great help in the future,” and “sees great prospect in the club in the following years.” Moreover, our debaters have yet again successfully represented OG. In mid-December Václav Benedikt Loula and J.A. Carr, as part of the Czech National Debate Team, left for the largest international debate tournament in Europe - WHO. Here they managed to not only to attain an impressive team result, losing only once by a single point to the American National Team, but more-so they managed to position themselves in the top 40 best speakers of the tournament; hence beating the likes of many stellar teams. Special Interests & Interviews Tips aor Getting the Best Sleep Possible

hen thinking about my article’s theme, I found myself awake until the early morning hours wondering what I my topic would be…. Soon, I did not get enough sleep and was quite tired the next day. Luckily, though I sleep well once again, some people, including my roommate who inspired me to write this, are not so fortunate. They often lay awake in their beds, seeing the time literally fly by, and the only thing keeping them company is their despair. This is insomnia, and it is one heck of a scary condition! Even though I am the type of person who could sleep through an atomic bomb attack, I, too, have experienced insomnia. Have you ever found yourself lying in bed and stressing over some difficulties in your life for so long that you thought you must have been lying there for all eternity? If yes, then you know insomnia. To provide you with a more specific definition, insomnia means having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or returning back to sleep. There are three types of insomnia: transient insomnia, where sleeping difficulties last for a few days; acute insomnia, with the symptoms showing up for about a month; and chronic insomnia, which can last for months, or even years. But don’t despair, as here are tips for better sleeping, some of which have even been tested on me. First of all, change your lifestyle. Schedule your sleep – It is important to wake up and go to sleep at the same
time every day, even on weekends. Thanks to this, our body gets used to the cycle and recognises our best sleep time. Remember, bed is for sleeping only – If you have a habit of lying in your bed watching TV, doing homework or whatever else than sleeping, stop it. Buy yourself a couch or a beanbag to lie on during the day, and leave the bed only for sleeping. Your mind will then associate the bed with sleep and the couch with other activities, making it easier to fall asleep. Set an alarm to go to bed – This one is tested on humans, and it works. If the feeling of shock when looking at the clock and realizing it is around midnight is familiar to you, this may help you. Simply set an alarm to remind you to go to bed, and if you are the person to hit the snooze button at least three times in the morning, set more alarms. Even if you hit snooze on one of them, the other will still annoy you a minute later. Make your room silent, dark and cool, that‘s the best you can do for both your body and your soul. Tested on and approved by humans. Before Going to Bed Put electronic devices away – Electronics are just another source of light that tells your body “be awake!” so put them away ideally an hour before going to bed. Also, never ever use your phone to check what the time is when you cannot fall asleep. It only distracts your mind and makes falling asleep even harder. Drink some herbal tea – This might
Temptation
work on you or not. However, it can’t harm you, and will likely relax you. Herbs good for sleeping are chamomile, valerian and lemon balm. Scent your room with essential oils – This is similar to drinking herbal teas, as essential oils can be put into aromatic lamps or into small bowls with water atop your radiator; the herbs listed above work well. Again, tested on humans. When in Bed Get calm and relaxed – You can either do some relaxing exercise like yoga before going to bed, or you can imagine your muscles are relaxing one by one starting at the tips of your toes when you already are in bed, lying comfortably and ready to sleep. Do not try to fall asleep – Stop thinking about sleeping when you try to sleep. Try counting something, sheep or whatever you want, you can even name all the things you are grateful for, but before each number or item of the list, breathe in and out deeply. Do not stare down the clock – You are not going to help it if you watch the hands of the clock move on and on. Not only are you thinking about sleep negatively, such as “I am probably not going to fall asleep at all,“ which programmes the mind to think that sleep is negative, but you also focus your mind on watching the clock instead of on relaxing and letting it slowly drift to sleep….

Hygge-ing Through Life—The Danish Way
I
magine. A country where the climate conditions don’t allow you to see light for 17 hours a day during the winter time is on the absolute top of the list with the happiest populations in the world. Its name is Denmark, But, what is it that makes Denmark the land of happiness? Could it be the concept of “hygge”, an idea utterly impossible to pronounce and translate, that propel Denmark forward? Since we’re unable to translate hygge, let’s take a look at what the concept is actually about because it’s not just a not so recent trend making masses of people crazy. It originated in Norway, but Danes adopted it, made it one of their national symbols and now everyone just connects it with Denmark. It’s a psychological state emerging from the feeling of safety, relaxation and coziness, it is, in fact, described as a feeling of coziness and contentment. It’s well-being. It’s a list of things that are supposed to make you feel cozy, which includes for example a cake, hot chocolate or a coffee, good book, board game, fireplace, blankets and pillows or candles. Imagine all of these things together in one room; that is hygge. In other words, it’s an overrated trend that exploded from incomprehensible reasons and by which millions of people ran to the closest bookstore to buy an overpriced book telling them what to do to be hygge-ing. Telling them things they could have thought of themselves if they weren’t so immersed in the need to fol2
low the latest trends. Sitting around a coffee table with your closest ones and playing board games is one of the definitions of hygge. But what if someone likes socializing and meeting new people on huge parties? Does the fact that he’s not hygge put him further away from reaching his feeling of happiness?
Source: Google Images
Let’s exaggerate now, shall we? Isn’t the feeling of self-acceptance one of the essential elements in the feeling of happiness as a whole? Doing what really brings you contentment, not caring if you fit in a group of people with different mentalities, not caring what they think about your values; isn’t this also a little important? Sure, sitting on a sofa, wrapped in a blanket, holding a warm cup of tea sounds like paradise for many people, but not all! Regarding the fact that every individual has different perceptions of happiness, isn’t commanding people with
lists of things that should and shouldn’t make them happy, a little bit stupid? Isn’t purchasing books with nothing more than basic ideas a bit strange? Now, don’t get me wrong, people. The hygge lifestyle isn’t wrong. Thinking that it’s the only thing capable of bringing happiness to all and advocating a set of basic principles with one’s credit card, is. Hygge is just taking simple images and organizing them to a ‘lifestyle’. It’s giving a couple of common ideas a name. Hygge books are full of very nice photos but the words don’t really say anything. If it’s not obvious by now, I think they’re highly unnecessary. Just because it happens to be today’s trend, it doesn’t require you to follow it to become a happier person. So, think twice about wasting your money on a book, which won‘t make you realize anything new. Acquire the best of all these basic principles in their simplest form while setting aside time for selfcare, friends and family, and most importantly, what truly brings you happiness. TEREZA CHÁROVÁ

ould you agree to commit a crime if someone offered you a treasure in an exchange? The temptation of evil is not an unusual subject for a novel, but Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho offers new approach to this ancient theme story in his book The Devil and Miss Prym. This powerful, complicated, psychological novel written in 2000 tries to answer an uneasy question: Are people essentially good or evil – and to what extend can their decisions be influenced? Coelho asks this along with many other questions. The story takes place in a small village, Viscos, whose society is composed of older people, except of one young lady, Miss Prym. The villagers live in boring peace until one cloudy day when a stranger arrives to their sleepy village. He shows the naïve barmaid a bar of gold he hid in the woods and tells her of another nine nearby. She must inform the villagers about his offer – gold for villagers in an exchange of a murder. The stranger says: “If, at the end of seven days, someone in the village is found dead - it could be a useless idle man, or someone with an incurable illness, the victim doesn't matter - then the money will go to the other villagers”. Although the stranger may seem like an antagonist, he only tries to understand the true nature of humans. This book is based around two choices. The first is Miss Prym's - she can choose to steal the one gold bar she knows about and flee to the city to make her dreams come true. This would not only help her achieve all she has always dreamed of, but also protect her neighbours from a difficult decision. On the other hand, the more moral choice would be not to steal the gold, and not tell the villagers about the stranger's offer. However, the stranger tells her what will happen if she keeps the secret – she, herself, will be most probably killed. (“If they do decide to kill someone, you will probably be their chosen victim.”) So, what is left for Miss Prym to do? She tells the villagers about the offer, and now they must make a choice: should they accept the gold and agree to murder or let their home vanish into the wind? What Coelho does well is present a story, in which his characters must prove to the stranger (and the reader) that humans are both good and evil, with a choice between both. Clearly, there have already been many books written on this topic, but none was like this one - it is a very specific, personal look at what people can do when pushed. The Devil and Miss Prym is not Coelho’s best book, but it is surely worth reading. I would recommend it to those who like to explore human behaviour in extreme situations.

ost of us think about South Africa as the colorful country with unusual animals and sandy beaches. I hadn't thought different but our family trip made me think deeper. For a month we stayed in a not-so-touristy and famous destination on the south-east coast, and I had the opportunity to see how South Africans live from the poor to the rich. Firstly, we need to face the truth. Almost all of the poorest have dark skin and a minimum of them worked hard enough to now belong to the rich and wealthy ones. Nowadays, 23% of South Africans live in slums. Slums are overcrowded city districts where all the poor people live in shelters built from anything they find, mostly sheet metal. We would think that the blacks aren’t allowed to make more money because of racism that remained since the days of apartheid, however, what we were told by the locals proves the exact opposite.
Most of the poor are happy and pleased with their actual life situation, even though most of them work as servants for wealthy people and see how luxuriously they could live. They don’t even seem to envy others and are just grateful for what
Princes of K-Pop
they have. We were also told that supposedly they carry this modesty from their old ancestors and don’t want to change anything about their life. For us, some of them may seem obtrusive and nosy, but that’s their nature and way of social living. Richer local people are grateful for help in many housework and the poorer are willing to help them. Naturally, not everyone's the same, and sometimes there may be tension, but it's always manageable.
Overall, locals are calm and joyful. Only occasionally we saw someone unhappy. People are used to waving at each other even though they have never met before and when you sneeze in a supermarket, there’s always going to be someone to say “Bless you!” I wish more people here shared similar kindnesses. Though my opinion may be distorted, I'm pleased that at least in that small African village people live together in peace. Perhaps this is why their national motto is “Unity in diversity”.

ulletproof Boy Scouts or Beyond the Scenes, also knowns as BTS, is a seven-member South Korean boy band starting to dominate the world with their dance performances as well as with touching lyrics about real issues that everyone of us goes through at some point.
Since I am a part of their fandom, ARMY, for almost a year now, I figured it is a great opportunity for me to tell you something about those admirable boys who stole hearts of many fangirls and helped many overcome their struggles. First of all, the septet debuted in 2013 with ‘No More Dream’, a song which encourages listeners to pursue their dreams. While their first two albums Skool Luv Affair and Dark & Wild tells listeners that it's okay to be different and to rebel against the rules, their next albums The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, part 1 and 2 are about growing up. These last two albums show us a completely different side of BTS and defined their music style. With the release of the album Wings,
which was inspired by the Hermann Hesse book about growing up and finding yourself, their success could not be denied, especially not after the Billboard Music Awards in 2017 where they won the Top Social Artist award. In September 2017, a new album took the spotlight. Love Yourself: Her was followed by a campaign to raise money for those in need, and BTS tried to pass over to their listeners a simple, yet important message: in order to love others, you need to love yourself first. As the year 2017 was coming to an end, BTS was on multiple American talk shows including The Ellen Show or The Late Late Show. They also made their U.S. television debut with their performance of ‘DNA’ on the AMAs. International fans have gone crazy and you should too! BTS loves their fans, they try to stay in touch with them via livestreams and are just overall very inspiring people. Go check them out and maybe you will better understand what I mean when I say: ‘They are the best in the industry.’

Goals vs. Dreams: An International Interview in Perspectives
F
or me, a goal has always meant something I looked forward to achieving, working hard on and making sure I am moving closer to. On the other hand, dreams are for me something that would be awesome to happen, but I don’t rely on them nor work towards it. They’re often big and not easily achievable. But different people have for sure different views on it. So, I interviewed a few people and asked them questions about their goals and dreams. Here are their answers.
Source: Google images
Q1) Do you think there is a difference between the terms "goal" and "dream"? If so, how big? A1: ‘I think a goal could be described as a short time or long time goal and a dream is your ultimate goal.’ - Jennate, Netherlands A2: ‘A goal tends to be something realistic we look forward to achieving, but a dream tends to be a lot more complex, it's something we want to do but it tends to be a lot more "unrealistic" than a goal. For example, a goal would be to be able to achieve a certain mark in a race, a dream
could be to take part in the Olympics.’ - Anonymous, Spain A3: ‘I think there's a difference, but it depends on the person/topic how big it is. I would define a goal as something you're working towards because you really want to reach it, and a dream as something where you know it is unlikely to happen and you don't work hard for it.’ - Lea, Germany A4: ‘There is a small difference I think. You’re more dedicated to a goal than to a dream.’ - Monika, Estonia A5: ‘Yes, a goal could be smaller while a dream is bigger and requires more time. - Nancy, Mexico Q2) What's your goal for 2018? A1: ‘I don't really have a specific goal, but I want to get higher grades in school and work on my skills and abilities. ‘ - Jennate, Netherlands A2: ‘That would be a hard question to answer. That’s due to the fact that during 2017 I achieved some of my personal goals, such as becoming better in sports, and I look forward to continuing to improve in 2018. However, perhaps my greatest goal for 2018 would be to "cure" myself of depression/anxiety and try to become the happy person I used to be! Even though I improved drastically in the last weeks, there are a few "scars" that need to get healed!’ - anonymous, Spain A3: ‘My goal for school is to get the same
grade average as last year and my goal for swimming is to train more often and reach certain times at different distances.’ - Lea, Germany A4: ‘Work hard on swimming, do well in school and eat well. - Monika, Estonia A5: ‘To travel to lots of places, competitions, and workout more.’ - Nancy, Mexico Q4) What's your goal in life? A1: ‘In the end, I want to be able to say: "I did everything I wanted to do." ‘ - Jennate, Netherlands A2: ‘That's such a complex question, but my main goal in life would be to make a social change in the world. I'm aware of global issues such as discrimination, animal and human violence, stereotypes... and I would like to change people's minds about it. Even though I know it will be nearly impossible to do so, I'd like to be remembered for all the good things that happened because of me. ‘ - anonymous, Spain A3: ‘That's a hard one. I think having my own family/having children and working in a job I like. These are the most important goals for me. In general, just living a happy life. ‘ - Lea, Germany A4: ‘To be happy.’ - Monika, Estonia A5: ‘To go to the USA, become a citizen there, live there my life there and have a career.’ - Nancy, Mexico
Open Press 8 - February 2018
Q4) What is your ultimate dream? A1: ‘I want to have an influence and be able to make people happy.’ - Jennate, Netherlands A2: ‘To be remembered as a person who achieved great things. Most of us live, enjoy our lives, but are remembered only by our loved ones. I want to be remembered, in the time I'm alive and after I die as well, as someone who made a great impact in the world's lifestyle. I know it's totally unrealistic but it hurts me to see people getting bullied and discriminated for being "different". We must find a solution to that, and I want to be the person to do so.’ - anonymous, Spain A3: ‘Same/similar things as for the goals because in this case, I can't really differentiate between goal and dream since it's still a long time until these things get more important.’ - Lea, Germany A4: ‘To be a wedding dress seller or a baker. And to be overall happy.’ - Monika, Estonia A5: ‘To have a good life and be happy with my job and myself.’ - Nancy, Mexico And what about you? What are your answers to these questions? Are you a dreamer or are you rather on the ground when it comes to setting goals?

Social Commentary & Opinion Challenges of Social Media Influence
T
hroughout the last two decades, social media has quickly become the most popular world-wide trend. Nowadays, almost everyone has an account on one social network or another. In fact, confessing to not having a Facebook account has become hardly believable. Rightly so, because social media has proven to have a large impact, both because of its wide-range propaganda and the variety of its forms. Many, especially millennials, consider social media an exquisite invention in which one is to find pleasure and fancy. However, there are still some among us who disdain social networks because of the negative influence they have. When talking about the influence of social media, one expects to hear about how awful it is. Besides, one is often advised not to spend his time on social media and do “something useful” instead. Despite similar claims, several studies have focused on the positive impacts of social media on our lives. To start with, social media undoubtedly provides the easiest and quickest means of communication. Social networks such as Facebook’s Messenger, WhatsApp or even Twitter represent some of the most frequently used communication platforms among smartphone users. The rise of these applications over the rather old-dated SMS or phone calls is caused by the fact that they are easily obtained and, unlike the latter, do not require payment.
In addition to providing communication and therefore a chance to socialise, social media are proven mood-boosters. Research has also shown that browsing on social platforms helps to reduce stress. In spite of this, the same research has acknowledged that the positive impacts of social media are highly individual. In other words, what helps one reduce stress, might evoke anxiety in someone else. Despite their somewhat positive impact on our well-being, social media are a common cause of anxiety and other mental health issues. People have reported feeling lonely or envious after scrolling down others’ profiles and seeing the things they wished they had themselves. Recurring negative emotions linked to one’s social media experience may lead to serious mental disorders, such as depression. Furthermore, using social media has evoked hopelessness or worthlessness associated with the notion of timewasting. The real danger of social media usage, however, lies much deeper than that. Thanks to the popularization of social media, instead of serving their primary purpose of sharing and communication, their objective has in some cases shifted to questionable political propaganda or cyber-bullying. Today, the views of young people are more than ever before influenced by what they encounter on Facebook or Instagram, and which is often carefully con-
cealed to seem benign. Moreover, social media often show us a distorted image of reality. Starting with the ideals of beauty all the way up to the correctness of political views, social media is feeding the young generation with re-enforcement of what they ought to feel, believe and even look like. As a result, the fragile self-esteem of the youth is challenged by an everlasting unescapable pressure from the outside. Notwithstanding, more and more people develop a social media addiction, which is in essence incurable.

ap, or hip-hop, can probably be credited as the most influential, but also the most controversial music genre there is. Hip-hop culture has swayed generations and still has a tight grip over the youth even today. But what exactly is it? It wasn’t until the 1970s when alongside the Civil Rights movement, rap became the means for the disenfranchised Afro-Americans to express their struggles and make their voice be heard beyond the borders of their ‘hood’. It was at this stage when hip-hop’s ‘bad cousin’, a subgenre called gangster rap, took the entire rap scene by storm. It is easily distinguishable by its glorification of the life on the street, in gangs, but also its heartfelt critique. Lyrics in the songs were authentic and as such served as a mirror for the whites to see the dayto-day realities, like drive by shootings, drug dealing and lives in housing projects of African-Americans. ‘Streets too loud to ever hear freedom ring.’ Mof Def Afro-American youth were the ones most severely impacted, as for them the ungraspable lyrics were daily realities. Moreover, as many came from ghettos, these adolescents dreamed of the fairytale success of popular MCs, a reminder 4

ear Readers,
First, let me welcome you to 2018, and wish you all that you want to be wished – be it health, love or other less mainstream alternatives. Today, we are undoubtedly living in a world of influences. Social media at the tip of our fingers, and (fake) news everywhere we look. We are surrounded by information - be true or false. Even though we may not realize it, everytime we scroll through Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, we are being influenced. In 2018, being an influencer is also a job. Our writers chose topics on a wide spectrum within this theme to fully explore what and how influences us. In this edition, you can read about the negative and positive influences of social media or the influence of rap culture. Other articles discuss the influence of the legalization of abortions, unseen influences or how humans still remain the greatest influencers. As always, practice your critical thinking, and don't get influenced - at least not too much.
And so, however helpful and secure social media may seem, it represents an omnipresent threat and challenge in the hands of the those who wish to use it for the wrong reasons.. One large change from last year was the location of the event. Last year it took place in the sports hall, but this year it was organized in the school dining hall. Both locations have their pros and cons, but I think it doesn’t really matter if this wonderful tradition happens in the giant hall or the nice dining room. Or if is it dinner or lunch. Even the type of food is not the main thing. It is Christmas, making people from the whole school get together and have a good time.

Social Commentary & Opinion The Art of Manipulation
W
e are constantly told that all of us are influenced by a multitude of different parties, whether it is our parents, school or just events around the world. However, when it comes to the less obvious factors, the general population's view is more mixed. Generally, there are two points of view on this topic. Some believe that there is some sort of a great and devious plot which aims to manipulate the entire world, while others believe that it is complete and utter nonsense and mostly trust their governments to do the right thing. Who is right and who is wrong? Is there actually a clear cut answer? Does this discussion even hold merit? These are the questions to answer.
Source: VoicesofYouth.org
To get a more balanced view, I will firstly explore some of the influences that I consider to be less obvious. One of these is commercial. This is undoubtedly a vast topic, yet it can be simplified. One of the primary forms of commercial influence is advertisement, especially nowadays when

businesses seem to be far greedier than ever before. Whether this is true or false, advertisements are certainly one of the most effective forms of influence. Otherwise, those using them would have already switched for something else. However, this doesn't often come up because the majority of the population has become used to it, which makes advertisements even more impactful. On the other hand, the influence of modern media is much more controversial, even though similar to advertisement, this is nothing new either. Newspapers have always been slightly biased towards one point of view or another, and this has, without a doubt, affected their audience to some extent. All of this isn't even considering government censorship, which can bring media influence to a whole new level. Yet, what makes the influence of modern media so controversial is the fact that they are usually not self-serving, but have the ability to promote a certain viewpoint on a multitude of events. This can oftentimes be impossible to prove, thus generating further controversy and general suspicion. Again, this can be driven to the extreme when one considers the fact that many mass media are being bought up by influential public figures, sometimes even politicians, who may very well have ulterior motives. This brings me back to my previous questions. It is obvious that certain individuals and groups have a staked interest
in influencing the world´s general population, yet how extensive is this really? First of all, some types of influence, like advertisement, are fairly simple but hen asked what influences us, we impactful, because whilst many don't are most likely to talk about tradireally seem to think about them, they tional media, such as TV, newspapers play an important role in our world to- and magazines, or social sites. he trend of criminality had been rising in the USA since the 1960s until early 90s according to multiple online sites. Since then, murder and violent crime rates have been on decline. Statisticians and media provided at least seven different reasons (including state interventions) for this predicted trend. According to Levitt and Dubner’s 2005 book called Freakonomics, the decline was caused by applying the death penalty four times as often as before. Logically, this interpretation makes perfect sense. People are less likely to commit their intended crimes. However, when statistics are analyzed, a broader context is necessary. Therefore, much later, the real influence of the increased numbers of death penalties on criminality was re-analyzed. It was eventually found out that it had an unremarkable influence on crime rates. It’s because the chance that a criminal would be sentenced to death increased so unnoticeably that it represented almost no motivation for the criminals. In fact, statisticians the pair interviewed made a very similar mistake in analyzing at least five of these seven possible causes. They all made the same mistake, as they ignored that correlation doesn’t imply causation, and presented many false reasons for why crime rates actually diminished. Most importantly, the trend was the same in states where these causes were not even implied, therefore, there was some other reason
that connected all of the states of the USA. There are correlations everywhere, but they hardly ever cause any effect on one another, such as in this case, because there is usually some other independent factor which is to blame. In this case, the factor that certainly had the highest impact was surprisingly the legalization of abortions in 1973 after the Roe vs. Wade case.

This story, however, will not analyze the moral side of abortions but will look at what it brought in. Records show that most women who undergo abortions are statistically young, single and from poor social conditions. They are women who would not be able to provide their potential children with appropriate nurturing and upbringing. That means, when a woman makes the difficult choice to end a pregnancy, she

hough it may not be seen so, the fashion industry belongs to the largest industries in the entire world. According to Wikipedia, unimaginable amounts of money are spent annually on clothing, footwear and accessories; the entire industry reached almost $2,560 trillion in 2010. This enormous business employed more than 57.8 million people worldwide in 2014. Yet, only few chosen ones are given a chance to start their own company and to become famous in this gigantic and merciless world. It is likely you’ve heard about Coco Chanel, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior or Elsa Schiaparelli, but have you ever heard about Erling Persson, Bengt Rosell, Ingemar Boman, Thomas and Christian Meyer, Michael Marks or Thomas Spencer? These names are not as famous, yet theye stand behind some of the largest brands that most of us shop at: H&M, Lindex, Desigual and Marks & Spencer. In these shops we seek trendy clothing that we can’t afford from famous luxurious designers. So, exactly what are the new trends of this spring? As each new season is like a new year in the fashion industry, some of the trends come and go quickly. Old ones are labeled as passé and those who still have the courage to wear the “old” clothes are simply “out”. But what is “in” for women in the spring of 2018? Elle magazine has recently published a guide to this spring’s greatest trends. It starts with rubber. Really. Rubberized materials are chic
this season, as they are used for dresses, shoes, coats, pants and bags by Calvin Klein, Simon Miller or R13. Asymmetrical necklines are another great trend. They twist around your neck and shoulders and create a bit offbalanced silhouette, but it is truly fancy, as shown on products by Calvin Klein or Haider Ackermann seen below. Possibly the most surprising trend is the return of the fanny pack.
new, but on contrary! If you wear a suit of an interesting color, such as purple, khaki or gold, you would follow the trends just fine. Hawaiian shirts and prints are great men hit of this spring. You can see them on shirts, pants or suits, even by Louis Vuitton! In this season waistlines, men are following women: their waists are raised a lot, accompanied by belt or two and even provoking visible boxers, as Haider Ackermann did. Also, jumpsuits are a “real yay!” this season, with Prada, Boss and Ralph Lauren making them as well. And a man in jumpsuit looks truly appealing.

One would think this hip-slung bag is already “out”, but Marc Jacobs, Gucci and Kate Spade are all proving otherwise. Going transparent is another important thing for this summer. Clear and translucent bags, shoes or even dresses may be only for the braver ones, but remember: you don’t want to be out! As for colors, pastel lavender, white suits or dark denim sets are the hits of this spring. So don’t be afraid to go out in soft purple dress by Michael Kors, stunning white suit from A.W.A.K.E or dark denim overall by Colovos. The menswear have experienced new trends as well, and suits definitely stand out. You may think that a suit is nothing

erbs that refer to various signs that indicate the weather change in the short horizon. People created them by observing the reactions of animals and plants to weather changes. For example, “If spiders are many and spinning their webs, the spell will soon be very dry.” This example refers to the humidity of the air. When there is too much water in the air, meaning the rain is about to come, the webs get moist and can easily break, so the spiders stay hidden, waiting for the change for the better. However, when the air is dry, there won’t be any rain any time soon. The spiders are out on their secure webs and waiting for prey.

Generally, weather proverbs could be divided into two groups. In the first group, there are those sayings that are bound to a specific part of the year. “Who doffs his coat on a winter day will gladly put it on in May”, is an excellent example for this group. For every ‘90s child at heart, the trends worn by the fashionable elite this season are enough to cause serious nostalgia for the most ubiquitous trends. The ‘90s were a breeding ground for some iconic fashion styles that were created. The latest trend of recreating fashionable moments from the ‘90s, plus giving them a little upgrade, has been making its mark in today’s world of fashion. While this article intended to tell you about all of the great 90s trends making a come-back, such as bandanas, chokers, and platform shoes, there was only space to really talk about one: bob and bangs. So let’s get to it… Bobs and bangs have resurfaced by bringing nostalgia to all adults, by forcing them to pull out photo albums and definitely finding a picture of them rocking that hairstyle while growing up. In the ‘90s bobs came in all shapes, sizes and colours and even became popular with men looking for an air of French sophistication (men have been successfully getting away with bobs in France for sometime now). In fact the bob is no longer a symbol of liberation or modernity in the 1990s, as in the previous years. Everyone from Whitney Houston to Courtney Love and even Emo Phillips expresses personal style through the bob haircut. The 20th Century bob hairstyle symbolises the independent, progressive and spirited woman. Taylor Swift? She’s been killing it in bob and bangs for as long as anyone can remember. The fluffed up trends of the ’80s – padded shoulders, neon leg warmers, and hairspray hardened up-dos – were stripped down for something more authentic such as listed above. Since the ’90s were a tough decade to grow up in, filled with wars, financial crises, etc., fashion reflected that. Clothes weren’t just fashionable anymore, they were a way to convey identity. ave you ever wondered what it feels like to be a figure skater? I have; that’s why I decided to interview my friend Rebeka (14), who started figure skating at the beginning of last school year. Q: What led you to figure skating? A: At first, I really liked ballet, but I knew that it was too late for me to start dancing. Nevertheless, when Ice arena was built close to my home, I thought why not start figure skating when it is so similar to ballet and possibly even more beautiful. Q: Tell me something about your beginning. For example did you learn how to fall correctly? A: Yes, we did but just in the first practice. Q: How long did it take you to get used to the pain caused from ice skating? A: Not that much time. Because when I started snowboarding, my feet hurt much more. Plus, it always hurts only some time after the training. Q: How often do you train? A: I train 5 times a week, two of which we train outside the skating rink. When I have time, I also go to trainings on Saturdays. Q: What does the training outside the skating rink look like? A: Basically, we do easier ballet and at the end of the lesson we practice the exercises, which we normally do on ice. Q: How often do you have to sharpen your skates? A: It depends on your skates, but mine have to be sharpened once half a year. Q: What kind of skates do you have? Is

there any special type for figure skating? A: Yes, and I have them, the brand is called Edea. At first, I had normal ones but they didn’t last long. Q: Do you wear skate protectors? A: Yes, I do, but I use them only for skipping. After the skates dry, I have to put cloth protectors on them, so they don’t rust. Q: Would you like to skate alone or in a pair in the future? A: I like skating in a pair more, but from the beginning, when I get to perform, I would like to skate alone, as it’s not easy to choose a partner with whom it would be easy and with whom we would understand each other. Q: Have you ever been to any competitions? A: Unfortunately no, but I would love to compete, luckily there are competitions for beginners. Q: Who is your figure skating idol? A: My biggest idol is probably Jevgenija Medvědovová. She is Russian and, I always find it very cool to watch her. Q: What are your figure skating goals? A: I doubt that I would be a big pro at figure skating because I started late, but perhaps I will get to some small, meaningless competition. I want to figure skate as long as I have time for it. I wish you luck and I hope that figure skating continues to make you happy. Thank you for the interview which may inspire and motivate people who are thinking about figure skating!

Děkujeme a přejeme mnoho štěstí a úspěchů.
her a knížek je skutečně celá spousta. Rád mám americkou a britskou kinematografii, z filmových tvůrců třeba Woodyho Allena, Spielberga , z dramatiků například Mc Donagha, Shakespeara, Čechova a další . Mám rád anglická divadla, některé soubory jsem měl možnost vidět, když hostovaly v Praze, řadu představení jsem viděl v Londýně a v New Yorku. Vzpomínám na Othella, Richarda III., Bouři, Lvího krále, Nice Fish s Markem Rylancem a mnoho dalších. Co se týká spisovatelů, je to celá ruská a americká klasika, z modernějších autorů budu jmenovat namátkou Frederica Celina, z našich spisovatelů Bohumila Hrabala , Ladislava Klímu a Milana Kunderu.

L

R
Elyas lebt in Deutschland.
