World News & Current Affairs Trump Care is on its Way

Campaign Device or Promise?

A

fter the surprising win of Donald Trump in the US presidential race, many hopeful voices claimed that Trump's more controversial claims made during the election season were mere 'campaign devices'. However, the new POTUS’s first weeks in office have seemed determined to prove these voices wrong.

"Every presidential candidate exaggerates during the rallies." "Let's give him a chance." These were among the staple phrases relayed by Trump supporters and several media outlets aiming to moderate the strong emotions that have spread after November’s election results were officially announced. Now, a few weeks into Trump's control of the White House, the illusion of mere incendiary campaign devices is vanishing into thin air. The plans to build a wall along the southern US border are on the table and so are many of the controversial executive orders. Among others, Donald Trump has signed an order cutting off funding from Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) whose main goal is to perform or educate about abortion and family planning abroad. This order, the so-called Mexico City Policy, was first adopted in Mexico in 1984 at a UN conference by President Reagan, set aside by Clinton, re-adopted by Bush, abolished by Obama only to be brought back again by Trump. This move cannot be considered as a US abortion ban in and of itself, as it sends a

clear message about the President’s stance on this issue and, more importantly, it shows his determination to follow through on campaign promises, no matter how controversial they may have seemed. Critics are accusing President Trump of degrading American democracy and stepping away from the core value of individual freedom. To adequately assess Trump's executive order and his proposals for the future, an overview of a global approach to abortion ought to be made. In general, abortion policies are divided into three categories: they are either provided without restriction (regardless of why), they are permitted to preserve the health or save the life of the mother, or they are prohibited altogether. Mauritania, a central African country, has the world’s strictest policies towards women in regards to abortion: under no circumstances are they given, not even to save the woman's life. However, if this is the case, then after the legal proceedings are initiated, the defendants may use the general criminal defense of necessity. The only European country in this category is currently Ireland. The category with exceptions to preserve health includes countries such as New Zealand, Argentina or the UK, where abortion is allowed in case of fetal impairment. The most relaxed abortion laws can be found in North America, most of Europe and Australia. If Trump was to proceed with the harsher abortion legislation, the US would move from the most tolerant category to presumably the 'health preservation' category. Asking oneself whether this shift would simultaneously indicate a shift away from the American values will likely lead to the omnipresent debate regarding this issue: pro-life vs prochoice.

eplace, repeal, delay -- The three key words debated in relation to Obama care which has ‘’gotta go’’ along with her institutor. The healthcare system established by the Affordable Care Act in 2009 has helped circa 22 million Americans to obtain insurance (including above 40 percent insured via their employer), and thereby declassified previously unaffordable healthcare. A fundamental principle of ACA was the guarantee of insurance, regardless of the person's medical condition. To secure the interest of the provider companies and keep them on the market, the government had to ensure an abundance of healthy people would underwrite. Hence fines were established for those unwilling to choose insurance; this prong of Obama care is referred to as the Individual Mandate.

Even before the election, some healthy people preferred to pay a fine than to insure, thus leaving the insurance companies with a majority of costly, sickly clients, leading to companies withdrawing out of the market. The Obama government obtained at least one insurer per state, but areas like Alabama or Oklahoma ceased with only one plan available. The Fake News Controversy

I

n Kiev, Ukraine, the set is getting ready and only seconds remaining until the daily night newscast begins however, this edition is somewhat special in the most unexpected and yet completely expected way. This Russian newscast tells nothing but lies. As a response to the long-term East-West conflict that began in Russia more than three years ago, the journalism department in Kyiv decided to start their own movement. As the anchor of the broadcast channel, Margo Gontar, intones “Welcome to ‘Stop Fake,’ the place where we set the record straight on fakes about Ukraine.” Somewhere else in the world, we could expect that news is the daily provision of numerous lies, but after watching ‘StopFake,’, we can be certain of it. ‘Stop Fake’ is an honest satire newscast that was brought up by many journalists from the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, after Yevhen

ple with disabilities and – via its filial, but separate program Medicare – the elderly. A dilemma placing values of economical sustainability against personal benefits to certain classes of enrolles has arises. Presumably, the system appealed to some, and you would guess the majority of them were sicker, poorer and older, while most criticised it – including the man of ‘tremendous changes’. Let me briefly analyse the outlooks for his implementation of the three mattering words. Repeal – the most unerring out of the trinity, anticipated in the upcoming weeks. As promised during the election campaign, Mr. Trump is expected to ‘‘immediately repeal and replace Obama care ’’. Mike Pence also specifically pledged to ‘‘get rid of the individual mandate’’. The problem is that Republicans have not yet decided on what will come next: Replace or Delay? Delay seems a convenient prerogative allowing Republicans to fulfil their election promise, as well as to take time planning a replacement, which could become a matter of years. Yet eventually they will have to coalescence around a particular plan to -Replace Obamacare. The visions of this vary from proposals to replace the current system with nothing to proffering plans that are close to an upgraded version of Obama care. Among the most discussed, is Paul Ryan’s plan of Better Way or Paul Rand’s idea of individually organised insurance pools. What we can expect is less support for permanently sick and old people, with the effect of lessened expenditures on government subsidies. For now, despite predicted and already befalling destabilization of the insurance market, people can still purchase insurance for the following year. Elizabeth Janečková

BBC Celebrates 80 Years

Fedchenko put the misinformation of the public into recognition for the first time. After many disputes and issues between Moscow and Kyiv, local journalists realized that the people of Kyiv deserve a movement or at least a space for their own “fake” voice. After many years of news outlets being manipulated and coerced to feed people lies, had spurred these young and brave journalist to take matters into their own hands. The channel touches the themes of war, cultural and religious problems and serves both ways of propaganda. “The more outrageous it is, the more likely it is to be on the program,” Ms. Gontar, the anchor, said. Although the stories are “patently absurd,” she said, she plays it straight on air. “People should take it seriously,” she also adds. One by one, the stories include things that never happened, actions that were never done and applauses heroes and people who never existed. There has been even a time when the newscast debunked a Russian news report on President Poroshenko giving a soccer ball, as a present, to a Ukrainian soldier with an amputated leg. Other recurring false themes contain highly radical and extreme satire. As Ms. Gontar adds with the promising suggestion that more stories will come “We will keep following the propaganda and catch the lies,” she said. “See you next week.”

n November 2 1936, in London, the first regular television broadcast was introduced by BBC. At the time, there were only a few hundred televisions and only twenty television broadcasts, as the only place with signal was London and the cities within its close vicinity. The high cost of televisions made it a pastime of only the wealthy, setting up a platform for the progress to come. The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is a British public service broadcaster. It is headquartered in the Broadcasting House in London and began in 1922 (94 years ago), making it the oldest national broadcasting organization in the world. The current owner is Her Majesty’s Government. Today, the BBC prides itself with more than twenty-five million subscribers. The current success of a regular television broadcast takes a great amount of work. Since the 1900s, people have mastered interactions with photosensitive properties of matter, however, to break up a picture and put it back together inside your TV presented a fitful challenge. In 1924, a Scottish engineer named John Logie Baird constructed the first television apparatus and by August 1926 the Ministry of Posts allowed Baird and his company to hold a trial broadcasting. The resulting competition led to the finding of another company called Adéla Chroustová Marconi-E.M.I. which had a screen with Open Press 5 - March 2017

higher definition, hence in 1933 BBC reached out to them instead. Subsequently, in 1935, the Ministry of Posts suggested giving both companies a broadcasting chance – Baird's company and the Marconi-E.M.I. These two rivals were swapped on a weekly basis. Marconi-E.M.I.'s screen played its role and ultimately drove Baird out of the market.

Since then, the habit of watching television has spread like wildfire. By 1938 there was a sixteen hour broadcast day on Sundays, though there was a brief pause due to WWII between 1939 and 1945. By 1948 the BBC had its own news outlet and in 1953 there were already twenty million people watching TV. Since then, BBC has quadrupled its following, making it one of the most successful television outlets in the world; a testament of hard work and single-minded determination paying off. World News & Current Affairs Refugees Welcome Here?

N

o hate, no fear, refugees are welcome here!’ — These words ricocheted from a brine of thousands of agitated protestors centralized around America’s major airports throughout February. President Donald J. Trump, with his antiMuslim ban policy, had spurred a tidal wave of antagonism setting up his next few years in office. But just what was this move? One of strategical importance, or was he merely taking a sardonic jab at the democratic party and its followers? After Prime Minister Theresa May’s acute visit to the White House, President Trump crossed a line (that many say ought not to have been crossed) by signing an executive order indefinitely banning Syrian refugees, revoking all other refugees for 120 days and prohibiting people from seven Muslim nations from entering the United States of America for 90 days. The countries listed in the ban were Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. This resulted in more than 60,000 visas being revoked and hundreds, if not thousands, of people stuck in immigration check lines at airports across America.

A New Wave of anti-Semitism

more than inspiring—almost rousing. Tens-of-thousands of protesters rallied at America’s major airports and, with the help of multiple lawyers, they attempted to aid as many people affected by the ban as possible; in some cases this meant sheltering them, buying food for them or just sending out messages of support.

United States Court Judge for the Eastern District of New York, Ann Donnelly, was the first judge to speak out against the ban. In her ruling she said “Individuals with refugee applications approved by US Citizenship and Immigration Services as part of the US Refugee Admissions Program, holders of valid immigrant and nonimmigrant visas, and other individuals from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen legally authorised to enter the United States cannot be removed by the US government.” Several more judges had similar remarks, however, it was Judge James Robart, who finally lifted the executive order, prompting President Trump to brand him a “so-called judge”. On March 16, a revised 90-day travel ban went into effect, removing Iraq from the list The people have spoken. Their decision above. This ban applies only to new visa apis sovereign. Just like in any democratic state, plicants, meaning those who had been granted their voice shouted out to be acknowledged, their visas will be allowed to enter the U.S. and so it has. The swift public outcry and reaction James Alexandr Carr against Trump’s executive order has been

fter the election of the U.S. President Donald Trump, the rate of hate crimes has been rising more and more. With an increasing amount of threats to various Jewish community centres and schools, how will the new administration deal with anti-semitism? Ever since the November presidential election, the rate of hate crime towards various ethnic groups in the United States has been on the rise. Most prominently this involves violence towards Muslims, Mexicans, African Americans, and immigrants. However, in recent months such hate crimes have also occurred towards groups of Jewish citizens. The nature of hate towards Jews in the U.S. has varied from bomb threats in schools and community centers to vandalizing gravestones. According to a March 13 report on CNN, there have been over 100 threats targeted at Jewish community centers in the U.S. prompting multiple parents to pull their children out of schools across the country. With the fifth wave of bomb threats that occurred at the end of February, as many as thirteen community centres and seven schools had been evacuated entirely. Fortunately, none of the threats have turned out to be real and the centres and schools resumed their activity eventually. Furthermore, more than 150 Jewish gravestones have been vandalized or knocked over completely in a cemetery in Philadelphia with similar occurrences happening in Missouri as well. As of now, funds

ermany, you don't have anything to do with democracy. These current practices of yours are no different than the Nazi practices of the past said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on March 4. President Erdoğan has gone from blatant name-calling to serious insults. According to The Guardian, he has gone to the extent of identifying the Netherlands and Germany as “States whose current practices are no different than the Nazi practices of the past.” Are his, now seemingly, malicious and improper comments, justified or are they unprecedented verbal assaults? Since becoming the president in 2003, his Islamic nationalism has had many reasons to intensify. Muslim Turkey, is in his eyes, is disadvantaged in comparison with Christian Europe. “Where is the liberty of religion?” were his words of condemnation addressed to the European court of justice that allows businesses to ban their workers wearing “visible religious symbols”. Erdoğan’s threats have reached new levels in response to the March 15 Dutch elections which found Mark Rutte and his Liberal VVD party on top. Erdoğan’s strong words of congratulations included, “You might have won the elections but you have lost a friend like Turkey.” The Turkish foreign minister later added the threat: “You have begun to collapse, Europe...Holy wars will soon begin in Europe.” To what extent is our European mentality similar to that of the days leading up to WWI? This is debatable. Supposing there are common elements, it is not via blame and threat we can transform our society towards tolerance. Elizabeth Janečková

are being raised to repair and restore the vandalized headstones. Even though none of these crimes can be traced back to anyone in particular and there is so far no clear connection to the presidential election, President Trump has suggested that these threats “are politically motivated.” Whatever the motive, Jewish communities all around the country are growing anxious for their safety and demanding a response from the Trump administration. While President Trump has condemned anti-semitism and said that “it is horrible and it has to stop” so far there has been very little

action done by the administration to minimize the hate crimes. What action has been taken has been considered “too little, too late.” The administration’s criticism for lack of protection of Jewish communities has increased, especially after there was no mention of “Jews” or “Judaism” in the White House statement on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 26, 2017. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia even linked this omission to “Holocaust denial”. It is expected that if another wave of threats was to occur, the Trump administration would be finally prompted to act, however nothing is confirmed as of yet. Maria Pavlovec

Kvarta Explores Jewish Quarter

O

n the 2nd of March both, Kvarta A and B, visited the Jewish museum in Pr6ague. We were accompanied by Mr. Witt and Ms. Drabkova, two of our Kvarta English teachers. The trip follows the curricular plan for Kvarta who study the Holocaust time period both in history and through English literature. The whole trip started with a long ride by bus and subway to the center of Prague where Mrs. Macura was waiting with the rest of students who decided to begin their journey already in Prague. Now our tour could finally begin. Our first stop was at the Maisel Synagogue, where we met our tour guide. She was a really keen and kind woman and, despite her unusual pronunciation, she was able to answer our questions thoroughly. She taught us about Jewish history before it was time to move to another place. Second up was the Pinkas Synagogue. This synagogue seemed (to me) the most interesting one. On its walls were written names of the victims of Holocaust. It was unbelievable as there were over 77,000 names written in tiny beautiful handwriting. These names reflected only those killed from the Czech lands. Even though the Pinkas Synagogue seemed amazing, it felt uncomfortable at the same time. Maybe it was because of the man who was giving us information about the victims in the background. Later, we toured the old Jewish cemetery connected to this synagogue. This cemetery is a bit unorganized in opposite to the cemeteries we are used to, but its disorganization makes the place more mysterious. Some of the gravestones here are nearly 400 years old and, in many places, bodies are buried on top of other bodies. Surely I recommend you visit both of these places.

Open Press 5 - March 2017

After a short break we went towards the Old-New Synagogue. We were told that it is the oldest synagogue in Prague and in the whole of middle Europe. It is a modest, cold and small synagogue, with 100 seats placed around the walls. We were informed that this synagogue still works and that every Saturday Orthodox Jews have worship here. This is the synagogue where the Golem myth is connected to. Finally, the Spanish Synagogue is well known for concerts which are often organized there. It was built at the end of 19th century in a Spanish style, which makes the synagogue different from the ones we saw because it is so brightly decorated with colorful paintings. After taking lots of pictures, which later appeared on Instagram, we went for lunch. We were invited by Mrs. Larisa Fedorova, who welcomed us in her restaurant. We were honored to be there. After eating a delicious meal and dessert in her unique Prague restaurant, we went secretly to admire the toilets. (Yes, even the teachers went to see the toilets after hearing how amazing they were.) Afterwards, we prepared our way back to home. Overall, it was a well organized and instructive trip, and I believe that everybody enjoyed it. Adéla Janovská

Variety A Presidential Easter

T

he Easter Egg Hunt is a traditional Easter event that consists of children running around and trying to find hidden Easter eggs in gardens or parks. There are three simple steps to follow for when you want to organize your own Easter egg hunt in your backyard. 1. Decorate your house: Hang pastelcolored balloons and flowers outside your house, so everyone knows where the hunt is, plus get the right atmosphere of spring, fresh and Easter. 2. Prepare everything for the hunt: You can hide either real or plastic eggs. Don’t forget to get your supplies ready in advance, so you are not stressed. You can dye the real eggs in bright colors, or fill the plastic ones with small toys, candy, coins or stickers. And don’t forget about the baskets. 3. Hide the eggs: Usually, the hunt is for both younger and older children. If so, the best way is divide your backyard into two zones according to the participants’ age. Hide the eggs in open space and other easy to find spots for the younger ones, but make the hunt difficult for the older ones. And remember: the hunt does’t end until the last egg is found, so keep a count about how many egg you hide. If you are too lazy to organize your own Easter egg hunt, or you want to experience something extraordinary, you can attempt The White House Easter Egg Roll. This tradition has been held since 1878 when President

espite the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, the universe remains deadly cold and uninviting. This, however, never stopped mankind from wanting to explore the unknown places that lie, quite literally, beyond our horizons. Before Elon Musk could have even started dreaming of commercial flights into space, there were others setting the grounds of space aeronautics as we know it today. Unfortunately, the successes achieved in this field are often attributed to a select few (often white male) heroes. This spring, the movie Hidden Figures will arrive to the Czech Republic to tell the story of Katherine Goble Johnson, an African -American woman who played a significant role in NASA’s early space program. The story also follows Jackson and Vaughn on their uncertain paths of women of color in science. The movie has so far received very warm reception, as evidenced by its three Oscar nominations. Although the critics do not see it as very “artistic”, it brings a strong, inspirational story to women of color and women pursuing careers in science. At the same time, it gives important recognition to figures the majority of us has never heard of but without whose brilliant minds mankind would not have reached its current destination. Special Interests & Interviews Don’t Follow Your Dreams

A

dream is a succession of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that usually occurs involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. What you have just read is the official W ikipedia definition of a dream. Translated – dreams are scenarios your brain forces you to see while you’re asleep and vulnerable, with a goal to either wake you up sweaty, confused, crying or all of the mentioned. Each and every human is different, but there still exist things which we all have in common; every individual has DNA, a heart and dreams. Although we may dream about insignificant things, unworthy for us to remember after waking up, we all dream every night and although there are some who think they definitely don’t experience dreams, it’s one of the biggest myths: they do. I’m sure you have heard that it is partially possible to analyze, or interpret, dreams; this

Editor‘s Note

can even be very useful. But the bigger question remains: should we really follow our dreams? Many people feel that important messages are hidden in dreams. They try to interpret each symbol and figure out what is “the true path” of their lives. It obviously depends, however, on a view of the symbols; a book of dreams may tell you you’re going to help to the economical development with implementation of new innovations you came up with, while you thought eating cereals was just eating cereal... Let’s take the ridiculous dream of a girl who we will call “Kelly”. Kelly once had a dream where she drove a baby stroller (no, she wasn’t standing behind the stroller, she was actually inside of it, sitting behind an actual steering wheel); she didn’t know where she was driving to, yet she was sure the destination was very important. When she arrived wherever she intended to arrive, her parents were really mad because their silly, little Kelly had forgotten to bring the tuna sandwiches like she was supposed to! So Kelly was forced to turn her stroller around and drive back home for them (mind you, this was in a stroller, so it took her like 12 hours). On her way home, Kelly was casually crashing into waffle-headed people, and it didn’t bother her a bit. However, finding out that the tuna sandwiches, for which she had just driven a day and a half, were eaten by an actual animal tuna, devastated her. In the end, Kelly and her whole family joined in at a funeral for the tuna sandwiches which had been cannibalistically devoured by a tuna. Now it’s time for the next step – analysis. According to a dream dictionary (which is a thing that truly exists), if you’re pushing (in our case driving, but whatever) a baby stroller in your dream it means you are about to attain success in your life, and you should be proud

London Bridge is falling down, falling down... As Oktava steps off into the void and leaves many bridges behind, it becomes vital to ask “what’s next?” with the affected rambling of an involved insider. In truth, these last few months have been filled with turmoil. Hormones, bone structure, the driving licenses merely assert themselves when we, in the final stages of this trainwreck of adolescence, are to make the most vital of decisions. Maybe you already have a calling. There surely are plenty of high school students mouthing Hippocratic Oaths before falling asleep, or imitating the strokes of Millais's brush with cutlery, or imagining the tea trees of Laos in place of Czech oaks. Some even know their destined school. However, the majority of us do not, and those are the ones I want to console. IB exams are due in two months, and yet many Oktava students (myself included) doubt on a weekly basis the choices they have made. As this is most likely the last piece of writing I will ever submit to the OG Chronicle, I cannot end on a different note but to say pursue what you love. Search for and do what excites you. When making decisions about your future, remember that while it might be a nice gesture, you are not obliged to compromise on what you like in order to make someone - anyone - else happy. Good luck! For those who were celebrating the “Moulin Rouge” (and for those who weren’t) here are some student memories of moments they found great, hilarious, worth remembering or totally disastrous.

and boost your ego. Next there are the waffles, which are an indication that Kelly should approach life from a more pragmatic perspective. Finally, when a tuna fish appears in your dreams it possibly symbolizes agility and stamina; it says Kelly should start working on building a strong character – probably without inclinations to fall under depression after seeing an eaten tuna sandwich. Now, what should Kelly do if she wants to become a better person after interpreting her dream? She may think a stroller symbolizes a soon pregnancy, she’ll find a potential father, will get pregnant and end her school attendance (that is, if she was a student in the first place). Naturally, she’ll get a job in a waffle bakery, where she won’t make enough money yet will be sure she “approached life from a more pragmatic perspective” AND Kelly will be concerned that she’ll soon gain stamina thanks to the tuna once seen in a dream. Kelly will likely die a struggling vagrant on the streets. Or, perhaps instead of analyzing and overthinking such insignificant details that could hold you back in life, or even ruin it for you, try to focus on the relevant things. This excessive analyzing of unimportant things can often prevent a person from making clear decisions. If the over-thinker Kelly had just made a regular tuna sandwich, she wouldn’t be dead right now. Therefore, instead of interpreting your ridiculous—and probably trifling dreams– find inspiration in them, because dreams support creativity, and stressing about banal things is not only unpleasant, but also unnecessary. So, stop following your dreams, and start following your dreams.:)

Special Interests & Interviews What are your pet peeves?

T

he topic of pet peeves is often taken as something to write about when you have no ideas or inspiration. That may, or may not be, my case. Nevertheless, when I googled “things to write an article about” it caught my attention. It lead me to acknowledging my personal pet peeves and even doing some research about how to overcome them so that I can share it with you.

To start with, pet peeves are usually complaints about specific behaviors rather than general feelings of dissatisfaction and unhappiness, or a minor annoyance that an individual identifies as particularly annoying to himself, to a greater degree than others may find. Most of the time (but not always) they involve people who are close to us. I always knew I had them, but when I spent more time thinking about it I realized there are more of which I didn't even know about—way more. My first, and biggest, pet peeve is when people chew, drink, or generally consume anything edible extra loudly or with their mouths open, but let’s be honest…who doesn't get annoyed by that? Loud sneezers, slow walkers, over excessive touchers, people that stand on the left side of the escalator, those who judge a person just by his social

media page or who say the phrase “criss cross apple sauce” are equally bothersome to me. Due to my short temper, I do not cope with my pet peeves easily, therefore, if you are like me, here are a few methods on how to overcome your pet peeves based on my research. The first step to defeating any pet peeve is to acknowledge that you have it. The next step is either to address the annoyance directly with the person or people causing it, eliminate the circumstances that are causing the problem in a creative and efficient way or try to realize it is not personal and the person does not acknowledge it. Another great approach is to find something to appreciate about the situation. Now this might seem impossible if its clearly a situation that irritates you but if you access it with a positive mindset it will work. I’m not saying that you necessarily have to enjoy being stuck in a traffic jam, but you can, for instance, try to shift you attention to listening to your favorite bands cd, or if you hate how a member of you family leaves their dirty dishes on the table focus on cherishing your time together because, in the end, in a few years you will find yourself missing how you had to clean after them. Hopefully this article helps you overcome your pet peeves, or at least deal with them better. Ultimately, I’m sorry, but you just have to deal with it. Valerie Pytjuk

W

ho wants to spend Christmas in a tropical climate anyway? Wise words from young Kevin McAllister in one of my favorite Christmas movies, Home Alone. For those of us living in the Northern Hemi-

sphere, Christmas time is a time for warm hats and crackling fire places. For building snowmen and sipping on hot chocolate. But honestly, who would not prefer spending Christmastime at the beach and coming back home sun-kissed, positive and full of energy? But, how would you feel about a sundrenched Christmas where the crisp snow is swapped for soft sand? It sure does sound appealing, doesn’t it? Start with waking up on Christmas morning to the hot gleaming sun and eating a rich breakfast of freshly picked juicy fruit while sitting outside by the pool. After breakfast, quickly put on your swimming suit, grab your beach bag and your favorite book and arrive at the beach to order a cold (non-alcoholic) piña colada. Just picture yourself on that beach with your sunglasses on, sipping that cold drink. Naturally, when I stay at home for ChristSo it looks like Christmas in the tropics is mas, my morning looks a bit different. slippers to put on as fast as possible to get warm again. I go downstairs into the kitchen and find myself waiting for the water to boil for my hot cup of tea, hoping that it will thaw me on the inside, while looking out of the window and at the field covered in a sparking fresh layer of snow. Just thinking about that gives me shivers. Christmas is supposed to be about spending time with your loved ones, family and friends, but what most people find is that they spend so much time running around during the holidays that they don’t get to spend as much time with them as they would like. In fact, experts suggest that there is more stress put on people during the holidays than there is during any other time of the year. This is proven by the fact that hospital emergency rooms see more people for ‘stress related’ illness in November and December than they do any other time of the year. It has also been medically proven that the beach is a sanctuary for the human body, mind, and spirit. Just being in the sun, standing on the shore is known to be a healing and relaxing experience for children and adults. And being there when you do not have the typical tourist crowds, like in the summer months, can make your vacation even more beneficial and healing.

The Anangu founded Uluru thousands of years ago, when they were on a long voyage across Australian desserts and they were looking for a water source. For hundreds of miles they were walking in the flat Australian desert and suddenly they found a huge mountain in the middle of nowhere with a year-round water source. he 59th Annual Grammy Awards or music’s so-called ‘biggest night’ were held on February 12, 2017. They were broadcasted live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. For the first time the show was hosted by the hilarious James Corden. This years show didn't fail to blow my mind once again, from the incredibly stunning performances to the moving and some surprising speeches.

Every single performance was iconic, and guaranteed to be remembered. Pop music was represented by many amazing artists. For example, The Weekend gave one of the best performances of his career singing his new single “I Feel It Coming” with the help of the famous duo Daft Punk. Ed Sheeran played his chart topping hit of 2017 “Shape of You” using only his guitar and an effect pedal, as a one-man band. Chance the Rapper made a gospel-fueled rendition of his song “All We Got”. The Grammys wouldn't be the same without the reigning greatest award-show performer of this decade, Beyonce, or as I like to call her Queen Bey. Her performance of “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles” from her album Lemonade, was pristinely delivered and moved everybody, not only in the arena but also behind the screen watching the show. It was no surprise that this would once again be a big night for the very talented Adele, who won both record of the year and al-

bum of the year. But Adele herself was shocked when she won album of the year. She thought Beyonce’s album deserved it more than hers. She talked about how Bey’s album Lemonade was “so monumental”, and how much she adored the singer. My personal favorite part of the whole show was the moment my all time favorite band, Twenty One Pilots, was announced for winning best pop duo/ group performance for their hit “Stressed Out”. What completed the whole show was when the duo’s name was announced. Their pants dropped to the floor before going up on stage to accept their first ever Grammy award. In their acceptance speech they told a touching story about how they watched the Grammys years back in Tyler’s house before realizing they were all in their underwear. Then and there, they said if they ever won a Grammy they would accept it “just like this”. Lastly Tyler triumphantly said, “This just goes to show that anyone, anywhere, can do anything,”. In my opinion The 59th Annual Grammy Awards were one of the best yet, and I am already looking forward to what the next Grammys will bring. As the amazing Billy Joel once said, "I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.” Lauren Muldoon

hen someone says they want to become a health professional, the first thing that pops into everybody's mind are doctors and nurses, or in rarer cases, medical researchers. However, it is arguable whether these people occupy the most important professions present in the field. While it is undeniable that executive health professionals are crucial for our society, there is another branch of public health vying for more attention: preventive education. Such an approach is deeply logical, as avoiding health problems and complications is the easiest way to reduce our need for medical care, even if all cannot be prevented. This is even more important in regions with severe economic issues, such as sub-Saharan Africa. In countries like Uganda or the Democratic Republic of Congo, which suffer from huge inequalities and badly distributed wealth and opportunities, providing education about most common regional illnesses is critical in reducing the countries' mortal rate. The success of education is apparent in reducing contamination by illnesses when we compare the statistics of more economically developed and less economically developed countries regarding illnesses present in both, such as HIV/ AIDS or tuberculosis. HIV/AIDS has no vaccination and no effective cure, only expensive treatment which slows down the destruction of lymphocytes; therefore, prevention is the cheapest and the most effective way to combat it. After numerous awareness campaigns in the West during the epidemic's rise in the 1980s and 1990s, the number of found cases per year decreased significantly. On the other hand, the number of cases kept rising in heavily hit regions like Africa where authorities like Christian churches denounced any form of contraception as well as Western-supported prevention programs. The role of education is therefore substantial in reducing health risks.

The Feminism of Birth Control

O

ral contraception, the Pill or birth control - no matter what you call it, we all know what it is. A simple pill, containing oestrogen and progesterol, which prevents pregnancy. We are all familiar with it because today, it is the norm. However, when the Pill was first introduced in 1961, it sparked a lot of controversy. The biggest outrage revolved around religion and whether taking birth control meant playing God.

Since then, contraceptives have proven essential for the modern-day family and society. The Pill allowed women to start taking jobs and led to their economic empowerment. Oral contraception incorporated women to the work force and today; women represent half of all U.S. workers and are the primary or cobreadwinners in two-thirds of American households. It is a consequence of the increase in college-educated women, that has been only possible due to the access to contraception, granting women the power of choice regarding their pregnancies. As a result, the world’s biggest economies and societies have flourished. The Pill has also been vital in family planning and led to a decrease in the number of abortions. Most notably, birth control has given women control over their own bodies and futures. Women can now opt to finish or extend their education and to be a part of the work force for as long as they want before bearing chil-

dren. With birth control, women have been in charge of whether or not they have children. If the answer is yes, they decide when and under what circumstances their child is born. Due to obvious reasons, reproductive rights have become significant to the women’s rights movement. Ever since, feminists have been fighting to provide women with absolute control and equality, starting with the right to property and the right to vote. In 1967, second wave feminism championed the Abortion Act, which entitled women to an abortion if it took place under 24 weeks of pregnancy. Even though the fight for equality is nowhere near finished, the conditions for women have been gradually improving and thus the objections had faded. Then, a man who takes pride in grabbing women by their genitals became the President of the United States. Now, his pro-life stand and state funding decisions may result in undefined access to birth control and unlawfulness of abortions. How ironic of a man who claims that pregnancy is an inconvenience for business. To resist, on January 21 2017 during the Women’s March, millions all over the world marched to support, among other significant causes, the access to contraceptives and the right to an abortion. These rights have enhanced the lives of millions and are crucial to not only women’s equality but also to modern society. It has become apparent that the dispute regarding contraceptives is not about religion or pro-life belief as it is about the constant urge to control women’s bodies and consequently, their lives. So, if and when Trump’s male state representatives, who will never be shamed for taking birth control and will never be pregnant, touch the reproductive and abortion rights, the nasty men and women will grab back. st

ear Readers,

As the sun finally comes out to greet spring, the months of constant colds and coughing are hopefully finally over. We notice the coughing because we are often worried that at the end of the week, we will become its victims - coughing, laying in bed and not feeling well.

To reflect on this, the Social Commentary section is once again united by one theme – health. Today, it is a word that we selfishly use only when referring to our own wellbeing. Though we deeply care about the health of our family and even our fluffy companions, we rarely ever think of the women that are banished because of their menstruation or the children dying because there are no vaccines. So we present to you our stories. As always, use your creative thinking; moreover, cherish your health and, during the present situation, probably even your access to healthcare. Home Birth: Calculating the Risks

A Another significantly important factor is obviously vaccination, which was the main tool in reducing the occurrence of tuberculosis – vaccines form a branch halfway between preventive programs and medical research, as they combine the tactics of one and information value of the other. Thanks to the invention of vaccines, our society has been able to reduce or even completely get rid of serious illnesses such as the plague; educating people about their usage is therefore strongly desirable for humanity. This does not concern only parts of Africa and Asia – a surge of misinformation about vaccines and the subsequent opposition to them led to large outbreaks of measles in recent years in France. Therefore, education about health is absolutely vital also in more economically developed regions in order to prevent serious regression into past medical problems. Information about the world's health issues and the modern solutions to them is not only important to be transmitted in schools, but also in the media and through public campaigns. In our age, when misinformation rules public opinion due to the spreading of fake news and fake sources on the internet, it is arguably even more important than ever before to keep the society informed. Furthermore, contrastingly to many political problems, health is a topic that most of the world would universally agree on – humanity's aim is the best health achievable through modern science. And to attain this goal, we must support proper education about health and stop misinformation from spreading. Advocate for health. Always fact-check. Tereza Podhajská 6

ccording to the W ashington Post, the popularity of midwives and planned home births is on the rise. Little do many parents know that this is a really dangerous decision, as I learned when consulting this problem with Doc. MuDr. L. Krofta. Even though there is a great number of successful stories of natural home deliveries, there are also many stories that went straight from terrific to terrible.

As The New Y ork Times states “The state’s figures show that that year [2012], the death rate for babies in planned home births with a midwife was about seven times that of births at a hospital.” Usually, parents choose to hire a midwife for two main reasons. First, they want the birth to be as natural as possible, in known surroundings and without any medication. Second, they do not have insurance and hiring a midwife is far less expensive than going to a hospital because there are no hospital expenses. According to the Mayo clinic, one of the top-ranked hospitals in the world in Rochester, Minnesota, parents are often seeking a less expensive way to deliver their child. This can mean that they consider their financial situation before their baby’s needs. What these two types of parents have in common is

the fact that they choose a way of delivery that is unsafe for both the child and the mother. These problems can come from the midwife’s education, or lack thereof at times. Anybody can be a midwife - it only takes a certain course if you are already a nurse or a three years course with no previous experience in healthcare. There is an immense difference between the education of a midwife and the one of an OB Gynecologist. For comparison to the maximum three years education of a midwife, a Gynecologist has to study for 11 years, yet they are allowed to do the same job. Many people do not realize that yet midwives helped women birth children for centuries but, according to the journal of the Royal Society of Medicine, a great number of mothers used to die during childbirth. To be exact, 700 out of 10,000 mothers died during a childbirth in the 20th century. To compare today in Czech Republic, less than 10 mothers out of 10,000 die during a childbirth. From this problem arises another one. In many cases, the midwife does not know how to deal with the complications that may occur during childbirth. After only engaging in one course, how can a midwife know when it is time to call a doctor or to go to the hospital? In better cases, the midwives have to deal only with fecal waste in the amniotic fluid or just when the labour is not processing quickly enough, which is a very common issue during childbirth. These complications can be easily fixed by going to the hospital. Unfortunately, much worse difficulty may occur, for instance when the placenta peels away from the inner wall of the uterus before delivery, the umbilical cord drops into the vagina ahead of the baby - the placenta is not delivered or it's not delivered intact. These problems may happen rapidly. According to Fox News “The death

Open Press 5 - March 2017

rate for midwife-attended home births was the highest, though, with almost 13 fatalities for every 10,000 deliveries,” the study found. That compares with roughly 6 deaths for every 10,000 hospital deliveries by a doctor. The most frequent causes of labor and delivery issues that contributed to neonatal deaths at home were situations that caused brain damage such as oxygen deprivation to the brain or suffocation. These happened in 2.3 of 10,000 births at home versus 0.21 per 10,000 in hospital.” In such case, the midwife needs to rush the mother to the hospital, which takes time. This could be at the cost of lives - the infant or the mother. Moreover, when the mother gets to the hospital, she is the doctor’s respon-

sibility and may cause the doctor trouble. When you chose a homebirth without a doctor, medication or proper hospital equipment, you are focusing more on your own needs and not your baby’s. This is an uncertain way of delivery, for there is a chance of something going terribly wrong, especially in today’s advanced medical world. A home birth is a safe kind of birth providing that everything goes smoothly, but that is anything but certain. Natalie Žalmanová

espite it being a part of everyday life, menstruation and issues surrounding it became something unheard of and sometimes even taboo. There are two sides to this problem - the perception of menstruation in societies of the more economically developed countries and the perception in less developed countries. The deliberate ignorance of menstruation, however, brings its negatives in the form of health risks. Modern societies' idea of menstruation became one of denial and repression of its existence. Today, it is easy to choose from a wide variety of products that help us women feel more comfortable and lead less disrupted lives. Even though this may seem revolutionary and considerate to women, usage of such products can lead to health complications. For example, toxic shock syndrome can be induced by tampons and its consequences are often severe. This, of course, is an extreme case, but there are less severe problems that usage of tampons and pads can bring, such as the drying of vaginal tissue. Moreover, women are usually forced to continue with their normal lives despite the fact that menstruation is often painful, which can lead to excessive use of painkillers. Overall, modern society is programmed to believe that menstruation does not stand in the way and provides many means with which women can ease their periods. As a result, menstruation is not taken seriously and many women do not talk about it or consider its influence on their physical state when making decisions regarding their everyday life.

On the other hand, there is denial and even judgment of women on their period in the less developed societies. Some cultures are known for expelling menstruating women from their community as they are considered impure. Women in Nepal gave testimony of being forbidden to go outside, of not being allowed to eat certain foods or to touch men and things considered holy. There is also an extreme ideology, thanks to which women are banished to small huts outside the village with little to drink and almost nothing to eat. This can bring serious health risks since the weakened body is more prone to infections and other health complications. Moreover, disorders such as abnormal uterine bleeding or dysmenorrhea can be dangerous when not treated or not taken seriously.

All in all, the health risks concerning menstruation are often linked to the neglect and denial of its existence. Some countries even offer paid menstrual leave, such as Indonesia under the Labour Act of 1948. Maybe if women, and men as well, saw menstruation as something that makes women women, something that belongs to them, as the virtue of their femininity and of their fertility, the health risks would be limited. The Moral Cost of Health

A

merica will soon replace the so-called Obamacare with a new policy - Trump does not seem to care. Should WE care? The purpose of this article is not to show whether private or public healthcare is better for society, but perhaps which system secures the moral high ground in a better way. In order to do so, we must first define each, and only then we can compare them. A public healthcare system is one which is collectively funded via taxes, ensuring that everyone has access to healthcare facilities.

On the other hand, we have the private contender, forcing every individual to pay for himself and only himself. Under this model, healthcare is compulsory, ran by profitseeking companies and generally more efficient. The lack of practicalities in this article occurs due to their absolute insignificance to my philosophical argument. Morality should always outweigh practical benefits whatever they may be. The reason why we condemn child labour is for exactly the same reasons. So, for the sake of argument and the fact that a completely different debate would unfold if practicalities were at stake, I shall only concentrate on the moral moiety. The fundamental flaw of the public system is to it utterly inherent, it strips one of his decision-making power. The taxation systems do not ask for your opinion. They overlook

Everybody Does It, All the Time

your desires and decisions. The legitimacy of taxation schemes hinge on the premise of enforcing universal morals. Such action, paradoxically, due to its disdain to popular opinion, falls short on its moral foundation. A cornerstone of morality is being omitted; moral validity can only be established subjectively. On the contrary, the alternative is not morally withstanding either. Not everyone will be able to afford medicine, just like many cannot now. Results are differing: people of age, those unable to pay for their expenses or simply deemed profitless for insurance companies, suffering by easily preventable diseases. The fact that some may disagree with a necessary sacrifice in the form of taxes does not make it moral, just like thinking that the unwillingness to exercise makes being fat beautiful. Preservation of human life is under all circumstances superior to everything else.

Both options are flawed, so it is impossible to make a universal verdict. Ultimately, the burden of decision shifts onto individual societies who decide, for themselves, which concept of healthcare establishments works best for them. Viktor Říha

our mom and dad did it as well. In fact, they might be doing it in this very moment. And there are at least 50 million other people doing it right now, probably even more. Failure has become one of our society’s taboos. Each day, we are pressured to achieve the highest result and reach the top in any area we are active in. Be it in sports, academic progress or work, many individuals find themselves under pressure. Failing is unacceptable and those who fail are either perceived as a disappointment or are laughed at for their uselessness. Unfulfilled expectations of an individual as well as unfulfilled expectations of society create a stressful element in our everyday lives. Effectively, individuals reprimand themselves for their occasional mistakes, no matter how big they are. Moreover, they are afraid of errors. Instead of fearing the consequences of failure, we should learn to embrace it and improve our emotional health. What those mocking anyone for their failure often forget is the fact that everybody fails at one point or another in their lives. Even dropping toothpaste on your clean clothes is a form of failure. Just like tolerating the tiniest mistakes, we should learn to cope with the bigger ones and perceive them as positive. Failure is the name for an emotional state which occurs after not meeting the society’s or our own expectations. The key thing to realize is: no one is obliged to fulfill anyone’s expectations, even their own. Taken from a more holistic

Open Press 5 - March 2017

point of view, the universe does not care about your bad test and so should not anyone else. That, however, does not mean that having a goal and fulfilling it is wrong. In fact, failure is a key element in achieving it. The assumption that failure is the opposite of achievement is a myth. On the contrary, many actions that are perceived as success were most likely preceded by a chain of mistakes. Failure is the indicator that shows your personal improvement. It can point you to the right direction or to a goal that suits you better. It takes some time to improve in any activity and the only person worth comparing to is yourself. It is not necessary to attain the goal you have set for yourself, the importance lies in the process of reaching it. If such action contributed to your personal growth, there is no sense in being upset about not reaching the goal – you can always try again, being richer by new knowledge. If you think it did not influence you as a person, it actually did: it showed you the path you should not take. Failure is certainly not a negative phenomenon. And those who pressure others not to fail are foolish.

Všudypřítomnost agentů, železných pěstí režimu, pak posiluj náš strach o ústřední milenecký pár a podněcují naše sympatie. Scénografie tedy značně zasahuje do příběhu.

K zabíjení a vymítání démonů. Dívka pootočila hlavu a jemně ji zahnula doprava.

Schoval meč a přiklekl si k ležící dívce. Zavřel dívce oči a rychlým krokem odešel z uličky. Do místního nevěstince.

Ferevin pořád nevěděl, proč dívky takhle vysávala a okrádala, a ani to nehodlal zjišťovat. Pak se mu zavřely oči a on omdlel. Když to uviděl, málem zešílel.

A
