MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

CIPHE CONTINUED SUPPORT Proud to be a Professional Brexit may be causing doubts and worries, but please be assured that the CIPHE continues to conduct ‘business as usual’ and members will see even more support in their professional development and education.

MEMBERSHIP Kevin Wellman, CIPHE CEO

EU REFERENDUM Following the EU Referendum held on 23rd June 2016 and the UK’s decision to leave, a number of members have asked whether there will be an impact on the CIPHE and its members. Please rest assured that the CIPHE is working hard to ensure the needs of all of our members and the plumbing and heating engineering industry are not compromised. As far as CIPHE membership is concerned for both existing and new members, you will not be affected by the outcome. Furthermore, in our capacity as a Professional Engineering Institute, we are supported by the Engineering Council, which is a signatory to the Washington Accord. This is an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programmes. Within Europe, the European Directive on the recognition of professional qualifications continues to apply to the UK. From a technical perspective, the CIPHE is introducing a Technical Strategy Group, which will consider political, economic, social and technological challenges our industry will face in the years ahead. More information on this will be published in due course.

There has been a great increase in membership enquiries worldwide and much credit must be given to the immense work undertaken by our volunteers, who provide great support to the team at Head Office. The ‘Proud to be a Professional’ campaign has been supported by all the trade press and the articles they have published have generated lots of discussion within the plumbing and heating industry. In addition to individual membership applications increasing, we have received applications from manufacturers and merchants seeking Industrial Associate membership and from colleges and training centres applying for Approved Training Centre recognition. Within two weeks of the renewal of our Engineering Council license, which now embraces CEng registration, we received over 70 enquiries for Chartered Engineer recognition. If you would like more information on Engineering Council registration, or assistance with your career progression, please contact the membership team.

WATER TREATMENT WEBINAR There was a great response to the inaugural webinar that took place on 17th May. It was viewed by more than 600 people; 88 percent of viewers were male and 12 percent female, it was watched in 20 locations with 12 percent of viewers accessing it from outside the UK. Some 27 percent viewers were aged 45-54; 23 percent aged 25-34 and 21 percent aged 35-44. As this edition of p&he is going to press, final arrangements are being made for September’s webinar on wetrooms, which will be followed later in the year by webinars covering system efficiency, controls and cyber security.

NEWS

TheNEWS PEGLER YORKSHIRE HOSTS INAUGURAL CIPHE ROUND TABLE Chaired by Richard Soper, Director of International Development for the CIPHE, the participants discussed pressing issues in order to make changes in the industry for the benefit of the public. Key issues discussed included the importance of bringing more young people into the industry via apprenticeships, encouraging installers to say they are ‘Proud to be a Professional’, as well as the installer’s role when it comes to protecting the general public – especially the elderly and vulnerable. The round table commented on how the CIPHE and its members combined, can help drive training via many different routes to encourage more apprenticeships and continued learning. In addition, the consortium discussed a ‘common sense’ approach to industry best practice and how this can be embedded within the day-to-day operations of plumbing and heating engineers.

CONSUMERS DEMAND COMFORT, CONVENIENCE AND CONTROL • Interest in app-driven thermostats grow as consumers say heating is ‘very difficult’ to control; • One in five UK homes don’t have thermostat, timer or radiator valves; and • Half of households don’t know how to use their heating systems properly. Consumers across the UK are demanding greater control from their heating system as new research shows one in five households lack even a basic thermostat or radiator valve. Smart heating systems could unlock a whole new era for the heating industry, with nearly half of the country’s households saying they’re interested in intelligent thermostats. Among the trends highlighted in its latest UK Pulse survey of consumer habits, is that the growth in smartphones and app-based technology has created a new demand for boilers that can be controlled via mobile devices, while others seek systems that offer greater level of manual control, such as timers, valves and thermostats.

CIS VERIFICATION PROBLEMS USING HMRC CIS ONLINE SERVICE There have been problems for firms in all sectors with the HMRC online verification system. The new system is removing verifications done online and by phone, that are more than two years old. It is also removing all verifications that were done by phone even when they have been used regularly since initial verification. HMRC cannot promise a quick fix. There is no legal obligation to re-verify subcontractors every two years. The HMRC system is in error. However, if the number of subcontractors showing as unknown on your system is small, you should re-verify. If you are talking about a major job re-verifying hundreds of subcontractors, you may wish to hang fire if you can, working in tranches to verify the subcontractors due to be paid within each of the next payment cycles. Where you previously verified a subcontractor and know their status, you can legally pay according to that status. It is not ideal to rely on an old verification and in an emergency, you will have to rely on your knowledge of the status.

VIESSMANN TOUR OF GREAT BRITAIN Viessmann has unveiled a new Infomobile display vehicle, which will demonstrate its technologies to installers throughout Great Britain and show consumers how they can save energy and lower fuel bills through “German engineering for your home.”The Infomobile is visiting merchant branches throughout the country, as well as retail premises, town centres and outdoor events. Darren McMahon, Viessmann Marketing Viessmann on the road Director, said: “Hundreds of thousands of home owners throughout the UK could cut their energy consumption and costs by using modern and efficient heating technologies. The Infomobile will show some of the best ways of doing this, at the same time as widening awareness among installers and consumers of the Viessmann brand.”

HEATING WITH ICE CREAM (CHOCOLATE) IN YORKSHIRE As part of a new project unveiled by R&R Ice Cream, Iona Capital and Veolia, by-products from ice cream manufacturing, which would otherwise end up in landfill, are being used to produce biomethane via anaerobic digestion (AD). The project has found that chocolate ice cream is the most powerful flavour, producing 10 percent more energy via AD than vanilla and 20 percent more than strawberry. The process utilises by-products from the manufacturing process, consisting of sugar, fat and protein left behind after production line cleansing, at R&R Ice Cream's factory in Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire. The waste material from the production process is then sent to Veolia's nearby AD facility, which was funded by Iona Capital and which uses the by-products to produce biogas for the National Grid to heat homes, as well as a fertiliser for agricultural use.

WHERE ARE ALL THE DUSTSHEETS? David Miller, member of the CIPHE Kent Branch, wonders where all the dustsheets have gone. Flicking through the latest issue of the Journal at the CIPHE AGM last June, it struck him that out of all the images, not one showed a dustsheet

on the ground or on a worktop and he wondered why? David said: “The best ones are those old stripey flannelette sheets you used to get; they seem to attract ‘bits’. “If any of my customers are clearing out

the airing cupboard, I always ask for the sheets if they have any and I keep them in the van.” What do you miss? Tweet us at: @CIPHE using the hash tag #dustsheet

PEGLER YORKSHIRE REWARDS LOYALTY The Pegler Yorkshire Installer Club provides a simple, save and redeem system offering a cash value or free product to the value of points collected. COVER STORY – MEMBER BENEFITS

CIPHE JOINS FORCES WITH

Which? Trusted Traders

The CIPHE has announced a brand new partnership with Which? Trusted Traders with a view to providing additional benefits to members and consumers alike. Richard Soper, Director of International Development at the CIPHE, explains.

A

t the start of 2016, the Institute launched its ‘Proud to be a Professional’ campaign to highlight the huge value that highly-skilled, professional plumbing and heating engineers can make to the quality of people’s lives on a daily basis.

SETTING PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS While members agree to recognise a Code of Professional Standards when they join the Institute, the CIPHE does hear of cases where unscrupulous installers (non-members) are delivering substandard work and taking advantage of people in their own homes. Even worse, these ‘tradesmen’ are getting away with it, as a result of some of the general public who don’t recognise that their chosen installer is incapable of working to the correct quality standards and mandatory requirements.

As an educational charity, the CIPHE is dedicated to promoting best practice and regular training/Continuing Professional Development, in order to help safeguard the health and safety of the public. With consumers still suffering at the hands of rogue traders, clearly, more needs to be done to help stamp out bad practice and protect homeowners in the process. On a positive note, the CIPHE’s logo has long been the indicator of a professional who is competent, responsible and dedicated to the ideas represented by the Code. In much the same way, the Which? logo is another quality sign that is well-known by consumers throughout the UK as a social enterprise they can trust and look to for impartial advice. It is for this reason that the Institute approached Which? Trusted Traders from a moral standpoint earlier this year, with a view to joining forces and offering extra protection and peace of mind for the public.”

HOW WHICH? TRUSTED TRADERS WORKS Alex Neill of Which? Trusted Traders said: “For almost 60 years now, Which? has been rigorously testing products and services and campaigning to make consumers more powerful. “Four years ago, Which? launched the Which? Trusted Traders scheme to give consumers confidence when hiring local tradespeople. “Which? Trusted Traders is a scheme that endorses traders who successfully pass an assessment. This assessment process involves approximately 30 checks that is designed to ensure applicants meet the high standards Which? Trusted Traders expects.” The process includes: 1. A credit report will be obtained to validate the financial health of a business that applies to be assessed. 2. A check of customer references chosen at random by the Which? Trusted Traders endorsement team from the 10 domestic customer details provided, is undertaken to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction. 3. A thorough examination of business and administrative procedures that are being followed, with the consumer interests in mind. 4. A face-to-face visit and interview by a Which? trading standards professional to fully understand all aspects of how the applicant does business. 5. A report of the assessment, providing businesses with valuable feedback from our experienced assessors and recommendations for any changes that may need to be made. COVER STORY – MEMBER BENEFITS

Having passed all these checks, the trader is now able to choose to join the scheme, agreeing to abide by the terms and conditions, code of conduct and pay the membership fees. They can now show their customers that they are an endorsed Which? Trusted trader. Endorsed traders can use the endorsement logo and receive a profile page on the Which? Trusted Traders website, which is free for consumers to access to find a local endorsed tradesperson. Alex Neill continues: “While the assessment process is detailed, it is important to note that Which? Trusted Traders works closely with businesses to identify areas for improvement so that businesses know how they could meet the standards required. In many ways, this is similar to a business health check and applicants often leave the initial assessment with a quick action list to complete before final checks are carried out. “As soon as businesses meet the high standards and join the scheme, they can begin using the Which? Trusted Traders logo and materials to advertise their services. “Working with the CIPHE, our aim is to offer members the opportunity to enhance their professional credentials and secure

more business as a result of being both CIPHE and Which? Trusted Traders endorsed. If you’re a professional, it pays to prove it.”

ACHIEVING WHICH? TRUSTED TRADER STATUS As a result of the new partnership between the CIPHE and Which? Trusted Traders, members of the Institute are being invited to take advantage of a discounted offer when they apply to become a Which? Trusted trader. Any CIPHE member who is keen to add to their professional credentials by undertaking the assessment, will receive a free assessment (normally £75 for businesses of less than 20 employees) and if they meet the standard and choose to join the scheme, will receive a 25 percent discount for the first five years of their membership off the standard fees, which are applicable each year for membership of the Which? Trusted Traders scheme.

FOLLOW PAUL’S JOURNEY TO BECOMING A TRUSTED TRADER… Our very own CIPHE President, Paul Williams, will be applying to be a Which? Trusted trader. P&HE will be following him as he goes through the assessment process, so look out for Paul’s progress in a future issue of the Journal.

TRAINING MATTERS

TRAINING MATTERS

ALL THAT MATTERS IN THE TRAINING WORLD

CAROL’S PUTTING HER FEET UP! This summer, Carol Canavan, author of all our Training Matters articles, retired. She said: “I’d just like to let you know how much I have enjoyed working in the plumbing and heating industry over the last 18 years. I have met some fantastic people who are passionate about what they do; they fill others with enthusiasm and encourage them to be the best they can.” Her final article will be published in our November/December 2016 issue. It will focus on how City & Guilds have been rewarding the achievements (for over 100 years) of learners, lecturers and

trainers who have attained great results by producing exceptional work – going above and beyond what is expected to achieve their goals. We thank Carol for all her hard work and positive messages over the years. Her commitment to our industry has been exemplary and we wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement. Our Training Matters columns will continue to be published in the Journal and provided by a new author. Carol signed off by saying: “Goodbye and good luck in all your endeavours!”

THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT

PRESIDENT’S DIARY

Proud to be a Professional Paul Williams became the CIPHE National President at the AGM in June. Since then, his feet have barely touched the ground, as he travels round the country representing the Institute and its members.

Paul Williams

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for the support and messages that I have received since I accepted the honour of this prestigious position.

M

y first duty as National President was to attend the roundtable meeting held at Pegler Yorkshire, with members of CIPHE Head Office staff, Peglar Yorkshire, press, plumbing merchants and CIPHE members. This was a very interesting day with some relevant issues raised. There are more roundtable meetings planned, which members are encouraged to attend. (See panel below for details). I also presented Mr Phill Jackson and Pegler Yorkshire with their Approved Training Centre (ATC) plaque.

NEW APPROVED TRAINING CENTRE It was great to have a tour around Amersham and Wycombe College, which is now a CIPHE Approved Training Centre. I spoke to the lecturers about training standards and development and presented their ATC plaque.

Amersham and Wycombe College presentation Worcester in June. It was a positive meeting and we are very encouraged by the support from our IAs and the trade press.

THE ‘DAY JOB’ As well as carrying out my duties as National President, I continue to work as a plumber. As a CIPHE Approved Contractor Person (ACP), I am entitled to join the WaterSafe scheme. This brings enquiries from the public; one enquiry recently led to a contract when the local water authority had given my client notice to renew their water main, as it was leaking about 1000l/ hour. I renewed the main, helping to stop the water company wasting so much water. If any college or CIPHE Branch would like me to attend an event, please email Cathy Swain at Head Office on catherines@ciphe.org.uk or visit http://www.ciphe.org.uk/ presidential-bookings

ROUND TABLE MEETINGS The next technical round table meeting will be held at Aqualisa Products Ltd, The Flyers Way, London Road, Westerham, Kent TN16 1DE on Tuesday 8th November 2016, from 10.00am to 1.00pm. Lunch will be provided. For more detaills, call Lesley Challis on +44 (0) 1708 463115 or email lesleyc@ciphe.org.uk Aqualisa Products Ltd is a CIPHE Approved Training centre.

2015 was a year of change in the heating industry. Regulations implementing the Eco-design of Energy Related Products Directive (ErP) came into force, setting specific requirements for space heating products across the EU. Coupled with this, the associated Labelling Directive introduced mandatory energy efficiency labels for products, together with package labels for combinations of products at the point of installation, with the intention of driving consumer behaviour to choose higher rated options.

By 2020, it is estimated that the ErP provisions related to space heating will result in annual emissions savings in the order of 110Mt CO2 across the EU, in comparison to “business as usual”. Much of this saving will be realised by minimum boiler energy efficiency requirements, which effectively ruled out standard efficiency boilers up to 400kW rated output from September 2015. In many countries, this meant a significant change to normal practice. In the UK, however, condensing boilers have been a requirement in domestic Building Regulations for over 10 years, so the transition was far simpler. 2015 was the first step on the ErP journey, with more changes set to come. In September 2018, NOx emission limits

TECHNICAL Regulations do not align and are not directly comparable, with the efficiency metric used in ErP. This is confusing to consumers but a great opportunity for well-trained and skilled Installers to offer consumers advice on how they can get the best solution for their homes. There is room for improvement and a definite case for action here; we anticipate that government will consult on possible changes to minimum requirements later this year, with a view to implementation next year.

will come into force, which set a maximum value of 56mg/kWh for gas/LPG fired boilers and 120mg/kWh for oil boilers. Some products on the market today will not meet these limits, therefore will require redesign or must be discontinued. An earlier ErP regulation relating to heating circulators impacted the market in 2015. Since 2013, it has been a requirement that glandless, standalone heating circulators with a rated hydraulic output of up to 2500W, have a maximum Energy Efficiency Index (EEI) of 0.27. This was tightened to an EEI of 0.23 in 2015 and integrated circulators, such as those built into combi and system boilers, were brought into scope, with huge energy and emissions savings when aggregated across the entire EU. More change is on the way. With a review of the directive for circulators due next year and space heating to follow in short order, it is expected that these reviews will pave the way for further product requirements into the 2020s. For manufacturers, it is clear that innovation and product development will continue to be critically important in meeting future requirements of both regulators and increasingly tech-savvy customers.

INSTALLERS For installers, the requirement for package labels under the Labelling Directive, was expected to be the main impact resulting from last year’s changes, many manufacturers and suppliers developed calculation tools and training content to assist with the generation of package labels, making the process as easy as possible and reducing additional time needed. Extensive research with homeowners and the wider supply chain in the UK indicates that, although the creation of labels is simple and installer awareness is high, consumer awareness is low, take up has been limited and demand for higher package ratings is yet to manifest.

A slow start for sure, but not a missed opportunity. So far, the ErP and Labelling Directives have been implemented in relative isolation to the rest of the UK regulatory framework, policy development is underway which will see a degree of integration.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR BOILER REPLACEMENTS The change to building regulations in 2005 remains one of the most successful government interventions into the residential energy market. By mandating that all new domestic gas boiler installations should use a condensing boiler, the government improved the energy efficiency of the residential heating sector at little additional cost to consumers. Using the principle of low cost, incremental improvements to system efficiency and some elements of the ErP Directive, the stage is set to revisit minimum requirements for boiler replacements within Building Regulations. As detailed in the 2013 Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide, current Building Regulations require a minimum SEDBUK 2009 boiler efficiency of 88 percent, in terms of control, a room thermostat, timer and TRVs are recommended. By and large, this minimum set of requirements and recommendations has not changed since 2005, yet technology has moved on apace. Under the ErP Directive, proven technology, such as modulating and compensating boiler control, are recognised and offer improved package efficiency ratings when applied. Furthermore, the old boiler efficiency rating systems still embedded within Building

REDUCED EMISSIONS AND HIGHER FUEL SAVINGS Expected proposals include altering the boiler efficiency metric to refer to an ErP seasonal space heating value, thereby aligning with product labels and data fiches. Minimum levels of heating controls are also expected to come under scrutiny with a key proposal being to mandate weather compensation for all installations, together with effective time and temperature control. This will help ensure that condensing boiler installations will operate at optimum efficiency levels throughout the year, resulting in reduced emissions and higher fuel savings. Furthermore, the effectiveness of other measures such as TRVs, automated optimisation and Time Proportional and Integral (TPI) control are likely to form part of a call for evidence. Regulations surrounding energy, emissions, heating systems and product standards will continue to evolve over time to support the wider decarbonisation and energy efficiency agenda, irrespective of potential changes in the UK’s relationship with the EU. It is critical that the entire industry engages to support good policy-making, providing feedback and evidence into consultations, with the ultimate aim of securing the best deal for our customers. Training and awareness will be key to embedding change, and manufacturers will continue to push the agenda here to make

UNDERFLOOR HEATING HITS THE HEAT SWEET SPOT Installers are very aware of the benefits of water-based underfloor heating (UFH) over electric systems or traditional radiators. Cheaper to run, better at distributing heat and offering complete design freedom, water-based UFH has been the heating solution of choice for over the past 15 years.

H

ow can we be sure that we are selecting the most appropriate products for each project? Andy Coy, Product Manager at Polypipe Underfloor Andy Coy, Heating, explains Product Manager how it is important for Underfloor Heating at Polypipe to approach each job individually and specify the perfect system for every installation. UFH manufacturers understand that every project is different and should offer systems to work in almost any scenario, this means giving installers more ways to provide customers with a suitable home heating solution, whether it be for a new build, renovation or home extension. If UFH is specified while a building is in the design stage, solid underfloor screeded systems are usually the most efficient choice. For new builds, the piping is fitted directly into the floor and covered with screed, before finally laying the chosen floor covering on top. These systems are perfect for heavyweight floor coverings like ceramic tiles, or where the floor covering needs to be secured directly to the panel, such as with solid wood flooring. A maximum UFH circuit length of 120m means one pipe run can be used to heat a whole room, with no joins within the floor meaning no opportunities for leaks.

SUSPENDED UFH

Polypipe Overlay Lite UFH system

Where floor is timber suspended or battened, a suspended UFH system provides the best solution. Spreader plates are fixed to the joist using small nails or staples and the pipe is then fitted to the pre-formed grooves of the panels. Adding a layer of insulation below the panels will ensure that almost all of the heat generated passes up into the room. This system is also perfect for ‘sprung’ flooring systems used in gyms and sports halls.

OVERLAY UFH Sometimes, such as in refurb projects, it is not possible to excavate the floor to install a screeded system. In this instance, overlay systems are ideal. Fitted over the existing floor, overlay UFH is well suited to renovations, or as a later addition to a new build project. These systems require water to be heated to temperatures of around 45˚C, much lower than that required of radiators, whilst maintaining a heat output of approximately 100W/m² to make the systems more environmentally friendly and, potentially, more cost effective.

Sometimes, floor joists make installing UFH on upper floors slightly more difficult, however modular heating panels (MHP) can make this a quick and simple job. MHPs

deliver a pre-configured solution that can be easily fitted and connected on-site. They can be placed in areas that require heat the most, while avoiding areas that do not require additional heat, such as under baths and fitted units. The beauty of specifying and installing UFH is that whether the project is a retrofit, new build or refurb, there is a system to suit. Help is also at hand, for example, by joining reputable industry groups such as Polypipe’s Registered Installer Network, where in-house teams of design engineers can take the hassle out of planning projects, including recommending which products to use, helping with all the required calculations and specifications so you can get on with the job.

PROTECTING US FROM ROGUE PUMP IMPORTS Peter Reynolds, Managing Director of Grundfos Pumps Ltd and President of the British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA), says it is incumbent upon us all to ensure the provenance of any pump systems that we specify or buy.

O

ur final exit from the EU is still some time away and there are many questions that still need to be addressed. A key factor in the Peter Reynolds, Managing Director of success of the ‘vote Grundfos Pumps Ltd to leave’ camp was that voters thought that this would give us the ability to control our borders better. This heightened protection is perceived as the opportunity to control immigration – but this factor is only one small element within the bigger, border control picture. Take pumps for example, they may not be the first things you think of as a target for non-compliance issues. However, pump specialists in the UK who are part of the industry pressure group, the BPMA, have been in dialogue for over three years about such imports with the National Measurement Regulatory Office (NMRO) who are the responsible UK Market Surveillance Authority. In recent years, market surveillance has been a key element in terms of delivering a fair and efficient EU internal market; their role ensures that products placed on the market, comply with EU regulations without posing any safety or environmental threats for users and the public. All of this was to ensure a level playing field/fair competition in the market as well as safeguarding the coherence of the European regulatory framework, the consistency of which depends on effective enforcement.

by CEOs from prominent member companies, met with the then Better Regulation Delivery Office (BRDO) in their role of UK Market Surveillance Authority to encourage them to take appropriate action. To date, despite a variety of approaches both directly and indirectly to the NMRO, the situation remains unchanged, with no specific plan to remove illegal products from the market, indeed, there would appear to be no cohesive methodology to clearly identify rogue imports.

SAFETY THREAT There are many concerns regarding these non-compliant products being available within our market as they have the capacity to cost bona fide companies millions of pounds in lost revenue, thus placing jobs and hardearned reputations at risk. Another area of real concern relates to their safety, as without proper testing, they could present a safety risk. The BPMA will continue to seek action and is currently approaching key figures within the newly-formed Government to engage them in this debate. Market surveillance is likely to come under increasing scrutiny. We need a plan to protect our industries, reputations and borders from the unscrupulous exploitation by companies to whom standards are irrelevant. This stance may not be as headline-grabbing as stopping people at our border crossings, but has the potential to make a fundamentally more significant difference.

PROTECT OUR BORDERS On the face of it, pumps may not seem to be an obvious area of concern. However, their importance is evident − not only maintaining internal ambient temperatures, but also keeping the wheels of industry turning, delivering sufficient clean water to where it is needed and removing waste water from where it is not. Protecting us from rogue pump imports is only one factor within this Brexit bigger picture. However, if we at the BPMA were unsuccessful before the vote, how can we ensure that we are protecting our borders successfully in the future? We should all be more responsible for the areas that we can influence i.e. ensuring the provenance of any pump systems that we are specifying or purchasing. The BPMA is committed to bring pressure to bear on all the agencies charged with maintaining standards for the greater good, but we need the support network to function to ensure that we are ready to take advantage of all the new opportunities that await us.

ILLEGAL PUMP IMPORTS In the UK, the responsibility for protecting us from non-compliant imports falls to the National Measurement and Regulation Office whose role is to simplify technical regulation for the benefit of British business. The BPMA approached them with growing evidence relating to the presence of illegal pump imports entering the UK from other countries, especially Asia, in 2013. The BPMA, supported

WARM AIR HEATING Adrian Jelley of Johnson & Starley, discusses the growth in popularity of warm air heating systems.

W

arm air heating in the residential sector was perceived to be the first central heating system installed in the UK Adrian Jelley,Technical back in the late Development Manager at Johnson & Starley 1950s and at its peak, there were 26 leading manufacturers making a variety of models to suit all types and sizes of properties. Warm air heating grew in popularity and was used extensively in local authority dwellings and the larger spec built dwellings and reached its peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The majority of appliances were on/off types, fitted to an open flue and mounted on a ‘stub duct’ distribution system. However, on the larger dwellings, these would have a ‘perimeter system’, either stepped duct or radial to reach the extremities of the rooms to be heated.

through the system and passed through a filter, which not only takes out the mould spores, but other pollutants such as dust and pollens. This is an advantage for occupants who suffer with allergies related to poor indoor air quality. Modern warm air systems have the ability to clean the air electronically; this removes contaminants at an efficiency of 95 percent down to one micron. The airborne particles are attracted and trapped to the electronic air cleaner by polarising the filter media and unlike electrostatic cleaners; they will not produce any ozone. As the space heating load drops to a range of 1kW to 3kW and warm air heating is the preferred system, then the provision can be met by alternatives to the traditional gas fired air heater. There will still be a requirement for domestic hot water, which can be fed from a boiler, either individual or communal, but rather than using radiators or an underfloor system, a simple fan coil unit

could be used. The fan coil could be fitted into the MVHR system and the warm air distributed in the same ductwork.

VENTILATION For off gas grid developments, air-to-air heat pumps are another alternative, which again can be part of an MVHR system and distributed through the same ductwork or by a ceiling cassette in the appropriate room. With the advances in smart control systems, the possibilities for a combined warm air and ventilation system are endless. However, with many older warm air heating systems still installed and working satisfactorily, the ventilation of the dwelling must not be confused with the ventilation provision for the combustion air requirement and/or compartment ventilation, as this is a separate requirement as described in BS5440. The dwelling ventilation requirement is described separately in Approved Document F of the Building Regulations.

MECHANICAL VENTILATION HEAT RECOVERY With the drive to ‘near zero carbon dwellings’ Building Regulations require improved levels of insulation and air tightness where the space heating load will reduce − but the need for ventilation will increase. To combat the old problems of mould and fungi growth and poor indoor air quality, continuous mechanical ventilation systems are growing in popularity, particularly mechanical ventilation heat recovery (MVHR) systems as they are able to filter the incoming air to prevent most of the airborne pollutants from entering the dwelling. Where a warm air system is installed in dwelling with an MVHR system, the pre-heated air from the ventilation system and the warm air ducting can be shared by simply connecting it to the return air duct on the warm air heater.

CLEAN AIR Dwellings heated with warm air systems have very few issues with mould and fungi growth as the air is continuously circulated

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

CIPHE INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATES

PROUD TO BE ASSOCIATED Paul Massey, Chairman of the CIPHE’s Industrial Associates (IA) Development Group, explains why support from the Institute’s IA members is vital to promoting pride and professionalism.

Proud to be a Professional

W

here is 2016 going? Here we are, post Brexit and three quarters of the way through the year; so what Paul Massey, have we achieved at the CIPHE? Well, from Chairman of the Industrial Associates where I’m sitting, quite a lot. Development Group Since launching the CIPHE’s ‘Proud to be a Professional’ campaign at the start of the year, the amount of interest and enthusiasm the Institute has received from its Industrial Associate supporters has been incredible. We have seen an increase in attendance at the quarterly Industrial Associate Development Group meetings, that are held in order to bring like-minded people and organisations together from across the plumbing, heating and bathroom sector. This includes leading industry bodies like the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) and the Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA) that share common aims to protect consumers and the vulnerable. So far this year, these networking events have been hosted by AKW Ltd, Thomas Dudley Ltd, Worcester, Bosch Group and most recently, Viessmann on 6th September and we are extremely grateful to everyone for their help. While such gatherings are well attended by Industrial Associate members, non-members are encouraged to participate too by way of introduction to the Institute’s role as an educational charity.

HIGHLIGHTING APPRENTICESHIPS AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES On that note, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and training remains high on the agenda, with the aim of highlighting apprenticeships and career opportunities while setting the highest standards for best practice and safeguarding consumers in the process. CIPHE members couldn’t agree more and as a result, several Industrial Associate supporters have already joined colleges around the UK in registering their own training facilities as CIPHE ApprovedTraining Centres (ATC) this year. The CIPHE is working with Industrial Associates in a variety of other ways. From organising round table debates that bring experienced people together in a professional environment to discuss topical issues and identify practical solutions to industry challenges, to running webinars in conjunction with the Institute and developing technical articles for the P&HE Journal; there’s plenty going on, so why not get involved and help to achieve our common goals?

LESS TALK, MORE ACTION While it’s good to talk, it’s much better to take action, says Roger Webb, Director of External Affairs at the CIPHE.

I

n early July, I spoke at the CIPHE’s quarterly Industrial Associates Development Group event, which was held at Worcester, Bosch Group. In front of a room full of people representing some of the best-known names in the business, I gave a brief Roger Webb, CIPHE Director of presentation about how the very last External Affairs thing our collective industries needs is another ‘talking shop’ and why the CIPHE’s mission is to be anything but that. Having launched the ‘Proud to be a Professional’ campaign at the start of 2016 and talking to manufacturers, colleges, students, merchants and installers in the process, it’s clear no-one else wants that either.

BEST PRACTICE As an educational charity, the Institute is dedicated to championing best practice, career opportunities, promoting professionalism and safeguarding the health and safety of the general public. To get these messages heard, the CIPHE is creating new opportunities to encourage both members and non-members to engage in activities that are supportive of these aims. Earlier this year, the CIPHE held its first webinar in conjunction with one of its IA supporters, ADEY Professional Heating Solutions, which was watched ‘live’ by over 600 members and non-members of the Institute. Being able to watch a training session online and gain CPD points in the process was a big hit with viewers. Thanks to the success of this initial trial, other online training sessions have been planned and will continue to run into 2017.

CAREERS To highlight careers for young people in the plumbing, heating and bathroom industries, the CIPHE launched its Apprentice Awards. Entries are now coming in and we’re looking forward to announcing the winners at a reception at the House of Commons this November. These initiatives, alongside others that provide extra reassurance for consumers − like the Institute’s newly established relationship with Which? Trusted Traders (see page 10) − are just a few examples of how CIPHE actions are speaking louder than words. Let’s keep the momentum going.

UNVENTED WATER HEATERS Thirty years ago, the UK water heating industry took a major leap forward with the introduction of the unvented water heater.

T

his was by no means a new system, having been invented in 1861 by British engineer, Thomas Hawksley and used extensively Stuart Doggrell, National Sales across Europe. Manager at Fabdec Ltd However, prior to 1986, it had been prohibited in the UK to heat water in a pressurised closed cylinder, because of the risk of explosions due to a build-up of pressure. As the technology evolved and the industry was able to deliver devices that would ensure safety, laws were amended to allow for heating water in unvented cylinders. This greatly improved the delivery and comfort of hot water to consumers – guaranteeing hot water at mains water pressure. People’s expectations increased and they wanted to recreate the luxury experience at home that they may have only had in hotels. Unvented water heaters quickly developed from leisure and commercial use to domestic households, where conventional vented systems with loft feed tanks – whilst effective – were limited in hot water pressure that they could deliver.

Fig. 1 Conventional unvented hot water cylinder installation schematic

FLOATING BAFFLE As pioneering as the original unvented heater was, research and development within the industry meant alternative solutions to cater for the expansion of hot water were sought and this led to the next innovation – what is commonly known as the floating baffle.

This is an internal expansion device, which would provide for a volume of air to be accommodated above the water level inside the cylinder. Sitting on the water surface, the baffle would reduce the exposure of air to water to a minimum. With no external expansion vessel required, this would allow for a quicker and simpler installation, also reducing the amount of space required.

SECURITY AND SAFETY The change in UK legislation was accompanied by a set of rules and regulations to ensure the security and the safety of running this system. In accordance with BS 7206: 1990, to accommodate for the expansion of the water as it is heated inside the water tank, an external pressurised expansion vessel would need to be installed in the piping system. Whilst there was also an allowance for limited internal expansion in the system, the expansion vessel was a necessary additional fitting which could cause multiple installation issues. It would need extra space and was another functioning part of the system that would require regular maintenance – including having to be re-pressurised throughout its lifecycle.

CPD Fabdec Excelsior 3S

Fig. 3 Venturi theory principle whereby the pressure at ‘point 1’ is higher than that at 2, and the fluid velocity at 1 is lower at 2 due to the cross-sectional area differential

The floating baffle was an innovative technology that enjoyed huge success and is still used extensively today. However, it is important to recognise that it only minimises the issue and does not completely eradicate it. Utilising the floating baffle results in a short, medium or longer-term retention of the internal air expansion gap. The air gap or ‘bubble’ will need to be re-charged, which may or may not be frequent, dependent on the conditions of use. Because the baffle is designed to move up and down the dip tube outlet length (as the water level fluctuates) there is still the matter of wear-and-tear, plus, the outer ring can never fully seal against the inner wall of the vessel; so ultimately, the system would still require maintenance. So, how could the expansion system be improved upon even further, to create, say, a totally self-sustaining internal air gap system?

THE VENTURI EFFECT In the early 2000s, Fabdec started looking at ways to develop a self-sustaining system. How could air be ever-present in the vessel in a range of operating conditions and how could the absorption of this air into the water be eliminated over a period of time, which has always been the downside of any unvented hot water system? One key idea that was proposed was to install a device on the inlet valve which followed the Venturi effect, so named after

Italian physicist Giovanni Battista Venturi (1746 – 1822). This, in simple terms, is the reduction in pressure that results when a fluid flows through a constricted section of pipe, with no discernible restriction to the volumetric flow rate. In the process, a fluid’s velocity must increase as it passes through a constriction in accordance with the principle of continuity, while its static pressure must decrease. Any gain in kinetic energy a fluid may accrue due to its increased velocity through a constriction, is balanced by a drop in pressure. It is the mixing of liquid with air – or more specifically, the introduction of air bubbles into the liquid – that makes the patented ‘SelfSustaining System’ 3STechnology unique, with the system now able to maintain the internal air gap as hot water is drawn off further upstream in typical usage. As it replenishes the internal expansion device permanently, there is no need for recharging or regular servicing. The organic development of the inlet valve, led to prototype trials with the help of Birmingham University Chemical Engineering Division and the Advanced Engineering Cluster at Wolverhampton University, who carried out Computational Fluid Dynamics to find the best geometry for the product.

COMPACT INSTALLATION SPACES What is also important to consider is the dip tube length within the vessel itself. The relationship between ‘aerated

INTRODUCING THE iTherm ELECTRIC SHOWER FROM AKW

MIRA ELITE QT FOR QUIET PRESSURE AND GOOD LOOKS

AKW’s iTherm is a modern, high-gloss thermostatic electric shower. LED temperature and flow indicators ensure the perfect thermostatically stabilised shower every time. With simple, yet independent temperature and flow controls, the shower includes an easy push power button that maintains settings for the next shower. Advanced shutdown features enhance safety and prolong each unit’s life. With smooth, rounded edges, iTherm is the ideal replacement shower with a universal size and shape. With multiple and flexible entry points, it works with existing cabling and pipework. This ensures fast installation and provides flexibility in bathroom design. With a three-year guarantee, iTherm is available in 8.5kW or 9.5kW, IP45 safety rated options from leading merchants.

The integral pump on the new Elite QT shower, from Mira, has been re-engineered to deliver much quieter operation and low noise flow in areas of low pressure, without any loss of power. The incorporation of patented Mira technologies such as Clearscale™ and new Clean-Flow™ technology – lowers maintenance costs and prolongs appliance life, especially in hard water and rural supply areas. It is also suitable for low pressure water systems and if water pressure is too erratic for a standard electric or mixer shower. The new Elite QT can retro-fit directly over its predecessors as fixing holes and connections are the same and it can replace current competitor pumped electrics, fitting straight onto water and electrical connections, with minimal filling of old screw holes.

FERNOX EXTENDS SCALE REDUCERS RANGE

SNICKERS HEAVY-DUTY WORKING CLOTHES

Fernox has extended its range of quality, WRAS approved, scale reducers. Ideal for areas where water hardness levels exceed 200 ppm, the range of scale reducers provide added boiler protection. The range of magnetic and electrolytic devices can be installed onto plastic, copper and brass pipework with either push fit or compression connections. The Fernox Magnetic Scale Reducer prevents the build-up of scale using magnetic principles, acting as a water conditioner. The devices offer single appliance protection ensuring that should any scale re-form – it is easier to remove. The Fernox Electrolytic Scale Reducer alters the structure of the salts, which form limescale, causing the particles to cluster together rather than attach to pipework and key components of central heating systems.

Part of the Next Generation Workwear range, Snickers’ RUFFWork working clothes are modern, heavy-duty garments that combine an amazing fit with reinforced features throughout. The special ‘Dobby Pro’ fabric used in these garments provides a unique combination of comfort and durability. What’s more, the ‘Cordura 1000’ reinforcements are up to three times more durable than regular Cordura and, with a special DWR coating to repel oil and moisture, these trousers will stay looking good for longer. RUFFWork trousers are available in different feature and functionality levels that include holster pockets, built-in ventilation and a stretch gusset. They’re also available in denim and as shorts. 01484 854788 info@snickersworkwear.co.uk

MIRA ADDS BIOCOTE® TO ENCLOSURE SEALS

V850 GATE VALVES OPEN UP OPPORTUNITIES

Mira Showers has enhanced its installer-friendly, Leap enclosure range with the incorporation of BioCote® into all of its door seals. BioCote® is an anti-bacterial, anti-microbial additive that stops discolouration and reduces bacteria and mould growth by up to 99.9 percent. The finish, based on silver ion technology, is integral to the seals and will not wear off or wash away – so they retain their anti-bacterial properties for life. The Leap range of shower enclosures delivers a clean, on-trend contemporary aesthetic combined with high-quality, engineered design features that also make it highly robust – it comes with a market-leading lifetime guarantee – and is simple to install.

Pegler Yorkshire’s new V850 ductile iron gate valve provides a solution for potable water applications. Gate valves, primarily used to allow the flow of liquids, ensure very low friction loss and provide a high flow path when fully open. The new V850 has a non-rising stem which supports ease of operation in confined spaces. The WRAS-approved V850 from Pegler Yorkshire is ideal for isolating pipelines that transport potable water. Its design incorporates a stainless steel stem providing resistance to corrosion, in addition, its discs are coated in a EPDM material to reduce exposure of fluid to metal surfaces. The valve is coated in an Epoxy paint to prevent direct contact with the ductile iron body to avoid any contamination of the water supply.
