We had some great stories on the blog in July, where many focused on how size is perceived in the industry and beyond. There were some inspiring stories such as the plus size runner who proves that she is not “too fat to run” and our counter article to a certain magazine’s list of 7 plus size models, who are not actually plus size. Changes are happening in the industry and making sure our voices are heard will help that shift continue. We also started a new feature where we will share with you what the PMM staff is currently wearing and loving. We hope by seeing a group of women, who are different heights and sizes, wearing what we love, will inspire you to get out of your own fashion box and be more bold, more confident. As one of my favorite quotes states, “Confidence is your best accessory, never leave home without it.” Until Next Month ~ Marcy fearlesslyjustme.blogspot.com If you have any questions or comments, you can always email me at marcy@plusmodelmagazine.com

I was brought up in a very healthy, organic chemical free environment, however in the model industry it’s extremely difficult to avoid chemicals, so I try to live by 80/20. At home I have all-natural, chemical-free products (or as few chemicals as possible). In my day-to-day life I never wear makeup (unless I have a casting, in which case my MU consists of brands like Ere Perez, Nude, Lavera) or do anything with my hair except wash it and let it dry naturally. I stand by sleep and water being the two most important things anyone needs! Followed by nutritious fuel for my body, as I need to keep my energy at 120% from the moment I start at 8am to the very last shot at 6pm. I relate myself to a blank canvas - An artist wants something that is excellent quality and will enhance their creation to it’s full potential, because no matter how good the makeup is or retouching, if you haven’t got that quality canvas to start with, it’s never going to live up to it’s full potential; makeup can’t achieve that fresh sparkle in the eye. I prep my skin the night before and morning of, do regular green tea face masks and hair treatments throughout the week, plus soaks in baths that have coconut oil and magnesium in them, all to help feed and nourish my body so that it’s at the uttermost prime before I get to the shoot.

Banaban Organic Virgin Coconut Oil

Suvana Lip Balm

Coconut oil is a major must have for me; it is my go to product for everything, both in diet and for everyday usage! Besides cooking, I use it as a moisturizer, makeup remover, deodorant, sunscreen, toothpaste, oil pulling, hair treatments as well as for any cuts, rashes or injuries. My skin just sings after using it. I love the Banaban product range not only for the quality, but also for what the company stands for in supporting Banaban people of Fiji and Banaba Island.

Lips are so im and are particu vulnerable bec skin is so thin while backpac I needed some help seal mois protect them f exposure. I wa luscious lips, and cracked.T only lip balm use. It’s a 100 Certified Orga that contains C Coconut Oil, V Honey and is a Chemical Free Australian Ma Owned!

Al’chemy Hair Products

I have virgin hair, which means that my hair is natural, never having dye or color put in, so it’s extremely soft and shinny... However it also means that it doesn’t hold as well and can drop out of style/volume very quickly. On a shoot I get a lot of products put in my hair to help hold it, from hairspray to styling, powders to teasing... add super-hot tongs and wind machines to all of that and by end of the day my hair is incredibly knotty! So yes, I need a good shampoo that will rejuvenate my hair, and Al’chemy does just that. My hair is left soft and rich after using it and the smell is amazing! The products are all-natural and are free from animal ingredients and animal testing.

I am a HUGE fan of dry body brushing! This baby is a non-toxic brush, which is amazing on the skin. Body brushing first thing in the morning can actually set up a perfect day! I do this before exercising and showering and follow it up with a slick moisturizer to nourish the skin (personally, I’m a fan of coconut oil). Benefits include increasing the circulation to the skin, breaking down unwanted toxins, shedding dead skin cells (and encourages new cell renewal), which results in smoother and brighter skin. It also helps with any pesky ingrown hairs, muscle tone and many more benefits!

Cactus Body Brush

Anything from the McArthur range is simply heaven! I mainly use the Complete Skincare Cream (lighter, use as a day moisturizer) and the Hydrating Facial Cream (heavier, so use at night before bed). My face soaks it up leaving it is so soft and smooth, and the smell is divine! The range of natural skincare and body products let you benefit from this remarkable fruit, from head-to-toe, with products that are free from petrochemicals, sulphates, parabens or animal testing.

is fair with a few blemishes, and I’m constantly mixing foundations to match my skin. I’ve been looking into airbrush products but not really sure if I should spend the money. Celebrities have their own make-up artist, but what does one have to do to achieve that look without the make-up artist? -

Dorinda D.

Dorinda, now you need to become your own personal makeup artist! It takes practice and a lot of trial and error. The key is to have fun with it.

Using an airbrush machine can be pricey, but you don’t need one to achieve flawless, lightweight coverage. Have you ever been color matched? My advice would be to skip the drugstore brands for now because there’s no way to test the product before you buy. Go to a makeup counter or store like Sephora where there are several options to choose from. If you find that the color is not right, don’t feel obligated to purchase anything. Just try somewhere else.

Tell them what your needs are: color and texture of foundation (would like one shade so you don’t have to mix), skin concerns (a few blemishes and an oily t-zone so you would prefer oil-free), concealer (can be used anywhere on the face that’s also great for highlighting).

Once you find the right foundation and concealer, the next step would be application. The difference between a professional look and that of a novice is skill level. Search YouTube for videos where you can learn contouring and highlighting, eyebrow shaping and filling in, proper eyeshadow and blush placement, etc.

You can also find plenty of more specific tips at my beauty blog: www.tarataylor.net/beauty-blog

media and asked them to share their favorite plus size denim brands and styles. I received lots of great feedback, and I was surprised to see such a diverse collection of answers. It made me realize how many different plus size denim brands are out there for us to choose from, and it inspired me to create my feature this month, “A to Z Denim Guide”, PMM’s first comprehensive denim shopping list. Denim is such a huge part of our everyday wardrobes that I wanted to create a go-to list for plus size women to use as a tool when shopping. I hope this list inspires you to try a new style of denim you have never worn, or a plus size brand that may be new to you!

This month’s issue of PMM is not only about denim, but also about celebrating junior plus style. Our Fashion & Shopping Editor, Alissa has put together a hot list of “Back to School Style”, highlighting the season’s best junior plus trends and styles, and fashion contributor, Monique has given us a cure for our “Denim Dilemma”, with fresh outfit inspiration to incorporate into our daily denim ensembles.

On a beauty note, our Beauty Editor, Tara is sharing her top 10 products for “Teen Beauty that will keep hair, skin and nails looking natural for teens, while still having fun!

Whether it is casual and cool, or dressed up and chic, whatever your denim style, I hope this issue brings you {at least one} new denim must have and tons of outfit inspiration to carry you through the rest of the summer and straight into back to school season, even if you are not heading back to class!

DENIM with blog editor Marcy Cruz

As formerly a size 32 and now a 26, I know personally that it can be a challenge to find denim in sizes above a 24. Trying to find the perfect pair of jeans is time consuming and just not fun. Being a plus size woman above a size 24, I had to learn what my body shape was and that helped me immensely in finding denim that fit well. Jeans come in many styles and not every style is for everyone. A skinny jean can elongate as well as slim your legs – a great thing for petite women. A bootcut jean works well for taller women and women with larger calves. A tapered waist will do wonders for pear shaped women with smaller waists. And if a jean has spandex in it, that stretch factor will help with fit and comfort. If you carry all your weight on top, a jean with an elastic waist is super comfortable and will give you some definition in your waist. It’s important to know your measurements and inseam (the length of your leg taken from your crotch to your ankle against the inside of your leg). Trying on jeans is a must. If ordering online, pay close attention to the measurements on the size chart and read customer reviews. If you can afford to, order two different sizes in the jeans you want. Or take advantage of free shipping and returns when you can.

So here’s my 15 plus retailers that offer denim above a size 24... #1: Lane Bryant – Up to size 28 [click] #2: Simply Be – Up to size 28 [click] #3: Avenue – Up to a size 32 [click] #4: Catherines – Up to a size 34/36, 5X [click]

Interview by Madeline Jones How long have you been blogging? I have been blogging on my own site a little over 2 years. Everyday Runway originally started as a column on a digital publication called Fahrenheit 24/7. Shortly before the publication shut down, I transitioned Everyday Runway to the site that exists today. Where do you love to shop? I shop EVERYWHERE! I am the true definition of a shopaholic and I find something I can incorporate into my wardrobe almost anywhere I go. I am also a high/low girl so you can find anything from Kmart to Neiman Marcus in my wardrobe. Some of the places I frequent here in Atlanta are Twelve 24 Boutique and Fashion to Figure. As far as online I love, Lane Bryant, ASOS and Eloquii, to name a few. Do you prefer online shopping or in-store? Both. While most of my clothes are off the rack from big box retailers, I love the exclusivity that an Indie designer provides. For the past few months at high-

profile events I have been wearing Shang Coleman for Numbered Designs; a collection available exclusively at Twelve 24 Boutique. In my opinion, you exude a different level of confidence when you are wearing something tailor made for you. You also don’t have to worry about someone else showing up in what you are wearing. In addition to Numbered Designs, I have also worn custom Tikedi, Lavender’s Jungle and The Wendy S. Collection.

I am looking forward to wearing flirty circle skirts, breezy maxi dresses and white jeans. If you have any of these 3 in your wardrobe, you are all set. These pieces can be styled a variety of ways and can take you from day to play by simply adjusting your accessories.are definitely a must on my list.

What trends are you looking forward to wearing this season?

plus-model-mag.com | aug 2014

I would describe my style as Modern Vintage. I consider myself to be on trend, but not trendy. I am completely obsessed with 1950’s & 1960’s fashion and am inspired by style icon’s Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn & Marilyn Monroe. I endeavor to incorporate the polish of Jackie, classic styling of Audrey and the sex appeal of Marilyn in every ensemble I wear.

and designer for her favorite brand, City Chic. This month we had the awesome opportunity to learn more about this beauty and get some insight about life as the face of this brand. Maddy: Growing up did you always know you wanted to be involved in the fashion industry? Courtney: I always knew I wanted to be involved in the fashion industry. I started as a freelance makeup artist, working on photo shoots. There was such a buzz around the fashion, models and designers; that feeling is addictive. Maddy: How did you get started as a model?

In 2007, I entered a modeling competition through Cosmopolitan Magazine Australia, and was lucky enough to get to the top 3. It was after that, I moved from the Gold Coast to Sydney to pursue my dream job of becoming the face of City Chic. Maddy: You have been the face of City Chic for many years, what has the experience been like for you? Courtney: Being the face of City Chic has been a life changing experience. City Chic has given me the confidence to wear the styles, colours and trends that I love, but didn’t think I could wear. I think this journey has been the same journey for our customer too, which is why I relate to her so much. It is that emotional connection to the City Chic customer that makes me truly passionate about my job. Maddy: You and I spent some time together a few years back here in the states and you always look amazing. What would you call your fashion style? What are your favorite brands and designers?

Courtney: Growing up, I would look up to my Mum, she is a lady who dresses to impress even if it was to go down to the shops to grab some milk! I would say my style is glamorous and fierce. I want to make an impact when I walk into a room. Clothes aren’t just garments for me, they allow me the confidence to speak my mind, to contribute my ideas, and to be creative in my work. You never know who you may run into or what opportunities the day will bring. A great fit is really important to me so honestly, I really only wear City Chic, the clothes are tailored to suit the curvy woman and show off my best assets. I have a major shoe fetish – so that’s where I splurge on designers! Maddy: Every aspiring model reading this interview wants to know two things... how do you keep your body in model shape and what are your tips to aspiring models about working with clients? Courtney: My tips to aspiring models are... 1. To love yourself in your own skin. 2. Practice poses in front of the mirror and research high fashion magazines. 3. Look back on your portfolio shots to see what works and what doesn’t. 4. Have a good work ethic - Be pleasant and punctual; no one likes a grump! 5. Be aspirational and always look your best, on or off the job. 6. Be confident, but not cocky. 7. Heels, heels, heels!

Life can be a journey with highs and lows and times when everything just seems right. How do we stay positive and put ourselves first when we live in a world that is very demanding of our time? This month I’m giving you my... 8 Tips to YES I CAN #1. Start facing problems head on It isn’t your problems that define you, but how you react to them and recover from them. Problems will not disappear unless you take action. Do what you can, when you can, and acknowledge what you’ve done. “Failure is a detour, not a dead-end street.” Zig Ziglar #2. Start being honest with yourself about everything Live with integrity, be honest about what’s right, as well as what needs to be changed. Be honest about what you want to achieve and who you want to become. #3. Start making your own happiness a priority Your needs matter! Remember, it IS possible to take care of your own needs while simultaneously caring for those around you. #4. Start being yourself, genuinely and proudly Embrace that individual inside you that has ideas, strengths and beauty like no one else. Be the person you know yourself to be – the best version of you – on your terms.

Photography by Nichole Alex

#5. Start valuing the lessons your mistakes teach you Mistakes are okay; they’re the stepping stones of progress. If you’re not failing from time-to-time, you’re not trying hard enough and you’re not learning. Take risks, stumble, fall, and then get up and try again. Appreciate that you are pushing yourself, learning, growing and improving. Significant achievements are almost invariably realized at the end of a long road of failures. One of the ‘mistakes’ you fear might just be the link to your greatest achievement yet.

plus-model-mag.com | aug 2014

#plusmodelmag

inspiration + style

#6. Start giving your ideas and dreams a chance In life, it’s rarely about getting a chance; it’s about taking a chance. You’ll never be 100% sure it will work, but you can always be 100% sure doing nothing won’t work. Most of the time you just have to go for it! And no matter how it turns out, it always ends up just the way it should be. Either you succeed or you learn something. Win-Win. #7. Start believing that you’re ready for the next step You are ready! Think about it. You have everything you need right now to take the next small, realistic step forward. So embrace the opportunities that come your way, and accept the challenges – they are gifts that will help you to grow. Don’t be afraid to be amazing! #8. Start working toward your goals every single day Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Whatever it is you dream about, start taking small, logical steps every day to make it happen. Get out there and DO something! The harder you work the luckier you will become. While many of us decide at some point during the course of our lives that we want to answer our calling, only few of us actually work on it. Here is how you can start. Just get up and do it! 1.Capture Your Ideas, Wants and Dreams 2.Create a Result-Focused, Purpose-Driven, Massive Action Plan 3.Commit 4.Schedule Henry David Thoreau once said, “Wealth is the ability to fully experience life.” ...Appreciation and faith are important to having a successful, purpose driven life; always be thankful for all that you are and all that you have!

Life on the PLUS Side: Positive Thinking Welcome to PLUS Model Magazine’s August 2014 health and wellness column! We hope you are in great spirits and enjoying summer so far. In this issue, we would like to offer you continued motivation and inspiration about living on the plus side of life and show you how a positive outlook on life can improve your health, relationships and future. Every day that we rise, especially when in great health, we have a fresh start; a new opportunity to live our best lives. The time for accepting defeat and stopping at the walls previously set by society, associates, enemies, and even our own mind are OVER. In changing our mindset, setting intentions, and utilizing positive thinking, we are reaching elevated heights and becoming the best person we can be. Positive thinking encompasses many things. It is much more than a sunny disposition or smile. Positive thinking is very much an internal process. It includes changing your usual thought pattern by focusing on positive outcomes, multiple possibilities, and increased opportunities; all of which will help build skills and mental agility.

Did you know positive thinking and optimism is associated with higher recovery rates for individuals undergoing treatment of chronic illnesses, injury, and depression? Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have conducted extensive research into the power of the mind and the effects that positive thinking has on it. Although it is unclear why positive thinking individuals experience improved health outcomes, some of the benefits include increased life span, lower instance of depression, lower levels of distress, greater immune resistance and better psychological and overall general health. Positive thinking is different for everyone as is our life’s path. We wanted to share with you the story of an amazing woman who found her path in life by adapting positive thinking. Author, comedian and motivational speaker Kelly Swanson sat down with me for an interview that we hope will inspire you to think more positively and realize your true potential in life. “I’ve found that using my weight, age, appearance, intelligence, weaknesses as excuses to hide behind – doesn’t serve me well. Instead of saying ‘No, not me, I’m not good enough’, I say ‘Why not me?’ and I jump. I’m living my dream and dreams aren’t handed to you. It’s a lot of work and sweat and tears. And going after the life we want takes great courage, and often has consequences. Be courageous anyway.” ~ Kelly Swanson

Yve: Kelly, you have quite an interesting story. Please share with our readers a little bit about yourself and how you got started. Kelly: Thank you, Yve. The truth is everyone has an interesting story to share. I was just bold enough (or crazy enough) to take mine to the stage. Because I believe we met in this moment for a reason, I ask those of you who are reading: “What’s your amazing story?” You have one. Even if you think it’s not that special. I promise it is. Each one of us was lovingly dropped here on earth to bring a special gift. You have one, even if you haven’t opened it yet. Yve: With some of the adversity and obstacles you’ve faced, how do you thrive on the plus side of life? Kelly: Some days I feel like it’s about getting back up. Our dreams aren’t reached in one giant leap – but in thousands of tiny little steps, forwards, backwards with the road lined with tears, questions, and triumphs, both big and small. But to answer your question – how do I keep going, keep facing my fears, and keep going after my dreams? (1) I see a vision of the life I want. I’ve learned you can’t get where you want if you don’t know what it looks like. (2) I believe in a story of victory and not defeat. Your life can change dramatically for the better, even if nothing around you changes, simply by changing the way you see it. (3) I do choose to believe in myself and that I am

Yve: So...30 day happiness program? We want some happy. Please tell us about your program.

Yve: What are some words of advice you can give to our readers about positive thinking and following their path? Kelly: I think I already said it above. My advice would be to See, Believe and Do. Yve: After our readers finish this article, how can they experience more of your light, message, and inspiration? Kelly: I would love to connect and make new friends! There are many ways that people can join my world. You can visit my website: www.kiwilive.com and in the password box enter “kelly”. Kelly: I don’t act like I’m something I’m not. I don’t pretend to have it all together. I’m one hot southern mess. I draw on my eyebrows and sometimes if I’m sleepy, I draw them on crooked. Last week, I drew one a good inch higher than the other. I had to walk around all day looking suspicious. It’s not perfection that people want these days – it’s connection. Yeah, I’m bigger in size than the other motivational speakers. People love to laugh. They love to find hope. They love to hear that they matter. They love to get permission to be who they were born to be. They love to hear that they are good enough, just the way they are. That’s what I bring them. Humor and Hope. That’s why we connect.

Yve: For many of the young girls, women, and readers who have yet to reach the point of complete self-love, as a motivational speaker, how are you able to so easily connect with your audience and/or readers? How does your message connect with the audience so sincerely?

Kelly: I’m so HAPPY about this new project. Not everybody can see my shows in person and when they do, they keep saying, “I wish I could take you home with me.” Well, now they can. I have partnered with a company called Placebo Effect to put together a 30-day online happiness program. It’s a daily 3-minute video with me talking, sharing my funny and inspiring stories, and providing an action step for that day. The goal of the program is to help you change the way you see yourself and your world; to help you find happiness. And then you become a part of the happiness community and we all comment and share happiness. To sign up, click here to and start and get your happy on.

enough. I also choose to take action. In every moment and every situation, we have a choice. I choose to be happy, although it’s not easy; it’s not something you wait on! I deserve to be happy and so do you.

This month we took to our Instagram to answer your most pressing questions about being a plus size model. If you are looking for the truth, here it is... empress_bebi asks... How do I become a plus size model? And do I still have a chance at 5’6” tall? Becoming a plus size model is much like any other career. Research the modeling industry and decide what type of modeling you are best suited for. Fashion models are generally 5’9” and up, fit models are usually 5’8” and up, but there are clients who need petite, fit models and this may be a good fit for you. As in everything else, there are exceptions to the height rule, however you will be working very hard to build a modeling career at this height. The reason for the height requirement is that sample sizes do not come in petite samples, and clients will ask models to shoot up to 50 pieces in one day and there is no time to pin clothing when you are working with time constraints.

robyn_russia asks... How do you start approaching agencies for representation? Great question! Most agencies take online submissions. Send clear images wearing denim jeans or leggings with a color or white tank and some strappy heels or pumps. Keep it simple: simple makeup, simple nail color, and simple hair. Photos you should send... one full-body photo against a wall, one side-shot, as well as a close-up photo of your face. Just those three photos along with your email or letter with your name, TRUE height, dress size and contact information. brovvneyed_monstar asks... Can you start a plus size modeling career at any age? Is it necessary to start in a major city like New York to get major bookings? We called some of the top agencies that represent plus size models in the United States. Collectively this was the answer, “We are always looking for models of all ages, but as our veteran models begin to transition out of the industry we are primarily looking for models 18 to 25. If she is older, has a great portfolio and the ‘look’ we are looking for, we will consider working with her.” Modeling jobs happen across the United States and overseas, so you don’t have to LIVE in NYC to work, but it would be helpful since many bookings and castings happen in major cities. The thing you should focus on is getting representation. This will ensure you know about all potential jobs and that you attend castings.

shmanishmasia asks... Once you’ve been signed to an agency, what are some of the best ways you can market/promote yourself aside from the work your agency does for you. (I know agencies have guidelines that you need to abide by, so each one is different.) Just some general “Get your face out there” sorts of things that can help boost your image. Many models believe that once they are signed, the magic begins. In today’s society social media and developing your brand is extremely important. Please, whatever you the boundaries of any rules with your agency. Social Media: Use Facebook, Instagram, etc. to show your work and build relationships and network.

consider doing, always make sure it is not overstepping

looks like it’s all glamorous, but showing the reality and hard work will help build a bridge between you and your followers. Events/Networking Events: There are models that do not mix modeling and community; the truth is that when you model, you are modeling to the community. Attend local events or events where your followers or new potential followers will be. The community can elevate a models career faster than any booking, so always be aware of how you are perceived online. Be kind, graceful and friendly.
