Instead of bright jewel tones and cool silvers; this summer's heavy metal heats up with bronzes, coppers and gold-leaf designs. Not for the faint of heart!

Defining Your Contours

The best way to keep a sun-kissed glow all summer, without sitting in the sun, is to enhance the contours of your face with a matte or subtle shimmering bronzer. Added bonus: the cheekbones pop, noses enhance and jaw-lines streamline creating dimension that looks GREAT in pictures!

Lovin' Those Golden Arches

Draw attention to your eyes by bleaching those brows. It creates lift and opens up the face. This is a trend that needs a little maintenance but gives a dramatic punch.

Color Coding Be a little daring and add a splash of color with liner and shadow. Stay within the eye area to keep it contained & under control. The secret is choosing JUST one color. This will keep the look up-to-date and out of the 80's.

A Breath of Fresh Face

Natural skin is always in, so matter what your complexion, it behooves you to take care of your skin. Treat yourself to a facial once a month, exfoliate regularly, use good products, drink plenty of water and eat healthy. You know ... less pollution! Taking good care of your skin allows you to wear less makeup. A brightening concealer and tinted moisturizer should do the trick. If you want to go a little further, add a highlighter to brow bone, bridge of nose and above cheek bones.

Medium to full coverage foundation (light coverage for those w ith flawless skin) Conceal under, inner and outer corners of eyes, sides of nostrils, corners of lips and any other blemishes Set foundation and concealer with a pressed or loose translucent powder. For more coverage use a pressed foundation Contour face on outer edge of forehead , under cheekbones and chin , along jaw and the sides of nose with a matte bronzer 2-3 shades darker than skin tone. The goal is to go from black on the lash line, blending up into bronze Line the upper and lower waterlines with a black kohl eyeliner Fill in groomed eyebrows with a brow powder or pencil! shade lighter than your hair color if you are a brunette, and 1 shade darker than your hair if you are a blonde, have light brown hair or fair skin Highlight under eyebrows with a flesh -toned matte ey eshadow Apply a set of natural false lashes with Duo Ey elash Glue Curl and apply a coat of very black mascara on upper and lower lashes On apples of cheeks lightly brush a soft pink blush Line lips with a flesh-toned lip liner Finish off with a creamy pastel Barbie pink lipstick. Tip 1: Do t he eyes first, clean up any fallen eyeshadow, then apply foundation. Tip 2: If you are weary of using black eyeshadow, substitute with dark brown until you build up your courage and skill. Remember, its only makeup!

We received over 2,000 entries and after weeks of deliberation we announced our finalist and first prize winner. Lauren Veluvolu embodied the combination we were looking for. nl

We spent the weekend with the curvy beauty in NYC on the set of her feature shoot and enjoyed watching Lauren take on the role she was born to play. We are excited about bringing you closer to this curvy beauty who is about to set the plus size modeling world on fire.

Maddy: How would you describe yourself? Lauren: I'm young, adventurous, a fashionista, animal lover, love bringing out the best in people, and I am in LOVE with plus size modeling and the overall power of curves and confidence combined!

Maddy: Was entering t he model search something you did on a whim or did you put a lot of thought behind it?

Lauren: When I first came across the ad for the PLUS Model Magazine and


Dorothy Combs Next Plus Size Super Model search, literally I was so excited that an opportunity like this had come up. As an aspiring plus model, I know when a good opportunity surfaces, you must submit ASAP! I knew this competit ion was going to be a tough one seeing that both PMM and DC Models were behind it. It was a big step, yet I fe lt ready enough to take it.

Maddy: Have you always wanted to be a model?

Lauren: I never considered modeling as an option due to self body image issues. I looked at models as these perfect and absolutely flawless human beings. I always told myself I wanted to be a famous movie actress! It was not until my junior year in high school that my body had started to really develop and I learned to start accepting myself. I felt beautiful and more confident than I had ever fe lt in my entire life. I remember having my very f irst photo shoot, which was a little less than two years ago. It was absolutely amazing, and literally nobody could tell that had been my first time shooting. I love expressing myself different ways, and just being me in front of the camera is one of the greatest ways to do so. Ever since then, I have been working hard and striving to be the best model I can be.

Maddy: When you were contacted about being the w inner, how were you fee ling and what type of response did you receive from your fami ly and friends?

Lauren: Oh my goodness, when I f irst received the phone call from PMM announcing the f inal decision had been made, and after 2,000 entries of beautiful women, I had won first place; I could not believe my ears. After I got off the phone. I told one of my really good friends that night, and I was sitting there in tears of joy. I could not stop crying, it was so unreal. I could not believe it! the craziest and most exciting things that have ever happened to me. It was and still is truly a blessing, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity of a lifetime. Soon after I told my mom and the rest of my family, and they were so ecstatic and excited for me! I was going to work in New York and winning a contract, and not just any contract but a contract w ith Dorothy Combs Models was a dream come true! It just goes to show that when you continue to work hard and never give up, what sounds like the impossible can be turned into the possible.

Maddy: You came to NYC for a shoot with Lucaspictures, PLUS Model Magazine and Victoria Janashvili. What lessons did you walk away w ith that you did not know before?

Lauren: After a long and fun fil led weekend of shooting in New York, I walked away with so much more than I had when I f irst learned I won the model search. I met some of the most amazing, hard working, and talented people! Ifelt so welcomed and appreciated, and knowing that I was there because they had bel ieved in my overall potential is one of the greatest blessings of all. I learned so much about movement and angles, and how to work my curves even more on camera than I had known prior to the shoots. I learned about the plus industry itself, and how much of an impact it is making on the overall fash ion world today. It's such a beautiful thing! I could have shot from sunrise to sunset; I had that much fun. Modeling has definitely turned into a passion of mine, and I am going to continue to work hard at what I love doing most. There is definitely no stopping for t his gal anytime soon!

Maddy: What are your goals in the modeling industry?

Lauren: About a year and a half ago, when I really started getting serious about modeling, I made a "To Model

For" list, and on that list I listed different companies and clients that I had my heart set on modeling for. I am going to keep shooting until I am able to finally work for them! I love the acceptance of curves in general and it seriously is the most amazing feeling seeing other plus size models also succeed and the confidence they carry. I am definitely a true believer of all around beauty, and I cannot wait for more and more acceptance of further audiences. It is such a beaut iful thing!

Flit\/orite ttj-pe of VlA-us~c: My favorite type(s) of music, because I have a couple, would have to be R&B and Hip Hop. I love dancing and really upbeat stuff, but I also like my favorite slow jams when I am in a calmer and more laid back type of mood.

If I had to choose five things that I could not live without, I would choose thy one and only God, my Mom, lip/ body moisturizer, my phone, and definitely chocolate. Created and produced by model, entrepreneur, and mogul, Gwen DeVoe; FFFWeek has grown from a production for plus size women into a week full of multi-faceted events catering specifically to the curvy woman. Not only about showcasing fashion, but also empowering curvy women, providing industry education, conducting health and fitness workshops, creating networking opportunities, and cultivating new talent. A mover and a shaker, Gwen DeVoe's moves have opened the doors for mainstream positive attention for the full figured woman. She has shaken up preconceived notions about the full figured woman and their importance in all aspects of fashion, garnering worldwide acclaim. For those who may know you, how would describe yourself your upbringing into industry?

A : I am a former athlete who switched careers to become a freelance plus model. After freelancing as a plus model for many years, I decided to try my hand at event planning and hosting. I no longer consider myself a planner, but an event producer.

Q: What were some of the challenges you encountered along your journey to success? A : I think some of the challenges I encountered were not realizing and ultimately maximizing my ability to bring people together. You know the old saying "If I knew then, what I know now", I imagine life would be significantly different fo r me.

Q:

What is your most memorable moment, to date, in recognition for the plus size movement? A : My most memorable moments came from not selling my soul for the sake of popularity. I produced FFFWeek the way I wanted to produce it, embracing and including as many individuals as poss ib le who typica lly would not have been invited to partic ipate in such an event. I included sizes above an 18 and petite models, which fo r some was (and still is!) a high risk. I stayed true to what I believed and did it my way. Nothing beats that, absolutely nothing.

Q:

In 2009, Full Figured Fash ion Week debuted in New York City. What was your vision behind this premiere show? Has your vision for FFFWeek evolved and if so, how?

A : My vision in 2009 was simply to produce an event that resembled MB Fashion Week, but exclusively Shoulder Dr ess: UniqueVintage.com

for plus sizes. My v ision for the event has now expanded to include not just the runway shows, but also more educational workshops. I want FFFWeek to be known as the event that assists in expanding other fashion businesses.

Q: What can sponsors, industry insiders, and guests expect from Full Figured Fashion Week 2012? Can you tell us in one word?

A : One word is hard to describe a monumental event like FFFWeek but if I had to choose a word, it would be: GROWTH.

Q: I have noticed in this years show, you are featuring Big &Tall men. This is a f irst for FFFWeek; how did you come to that decision?

A : I was motivated to do a Big and Tall mens fashion show by the tons of emails I received from big and tall men who asked me to find a way to include them.

Q: The itinerary for this year's FFFWeek is very colorful, featuring new events and partnerships. Once again, as an innovator, how do you decide on offerings at FFFWeek? I have a f ive year plan for FFFWeek and so many of the offerings that are presented to me in the form of FFFWeek partnersh ips are seriously considered because I feel that most of these offerings bring me that much closer to my overall f ive year plan.

I think it is important to have high end retailers involved in FFFWeek because just like in any other industry, plus size consumers are diverse in their clothing tastes and it is important for us to acknowledge and provide options that support that diversity.

A : I would advise anyone who wanted to achieve their goals is to be diligent. persistent and humble. These are the key ingredients to achieving your goals. What an honor and privilege it has been to interview Ms. Gwen DeVoe! Thank you kindly for t ime and candor!

We have talked about a million and one things that you are doing. How do you get all of these things done within a 24-hour day?

A : You are very welcome!

A : I have a really great group of individuals on my production team, including my assistant, who are willing to step out of their roles to assist me in whatever "extras" I throw their way. It also helps to be organized.

What is your key to success 1n balancing life & work?

A : Of late, I have not been too successful in the "balancing" part but I try to remember to make an effort to enjoy life while working. It is difficult sometimes because when you are passionate about what you do, you can often become overwhelmed by that passion. A good way to avoid becoming overwhelmed is to make sure you spend time with people outside of your industry.

Q:

Colleen: What motivated you to apply to be the Face of Full Figured Fash ion Week 2012? Venessa: Well for the last few years I had always wanted to, but always made an excuse of why I shou ld not. My selfconfid ence was low and this yea r I am in a better place in my life and my conf idence is better than ever before. I just feel timing is everything and I felt like this was my year. C: Who inspires you in the plus size industry?

V: Monique and Jill Scott. They are two beautiful women that ar e confident inside and out. C: How do you feel events like Full Figured Fashion Week affect plus size women? Does it shine a more positive light on full figured women to mainstream society?

V: I feel that FFFWeek brings unity amongst full figured women across the US. When full f igured women and designers can come together and eel-

ebrate who we are and that we can be accepted with our size. we are showing people that we are here to stay. The more we stand together and voice our opinions, the more we are breaking down barriers in today's society and their outlook on plus size woman.

C: How would you describe your persona l style?

V: Well to be honest I am a very simple woman, I love to throw on a tee-shirt and capris, but when I do go to an event I love to be fabu lous with a nice dress and killer pair of heels. C: How do you feel about the current state of the plus size modeling indust ry? Is there anything you want to see changed?

V: It is a very challeng ing industry to be accepted as a plus size model. I think we have made some progress but I st ill feel we have so much more ground to cover. The change I would love to see is more designers making clothes that fit full figured women. not just go up to a size 12 or 14.

C: What has been your biggest challenge to becoming a plus size model? V: For me either I was not small enough or big enough. My size has fluctuated from a size 22 to 10.

C: You have faced some medical challenges such as battling cervical cancer and losing your abil ity to walk due to a problem with an epidural injection. How have those challenges changed your outlook on life? V: I have been through so many trials and setbacks, but through each exper ience I have been through have made me a stronger person. Without my faith in God, I wouldn't be where I am today. Life is not guaranteed so each day I live my life to the fullest. C: We recently saw you in the Spring/ Summer campaign for Wole Designs. Are there any other upcoming projects that we can look forward to seeing you in?

V: I am currently in two fashion shows coming up this week modeling for the House of Van Miller, with Vanessa Henderson and Felicia Dietrich Crochet Couture. Most recently I was working on a project and modeling for a new fu ll figured clothing line, CURVATO by Nicci Gilbert-Daniels from the R&B group Brownstone.

C: You have three wonderfu l daughters. How do you balance being a mother w ith modeling and acting? V: Oh wow, it is very challenging with our hectic schedules. I am truly blessed

C: Acting was your f irst love. How di you get into the plus modeling industry? V: I actually started modeling when was I was thirteen for a few years, but it was not until I moved Atlanta in 2006 that I actually started doing fash ion shows and worked my way up.

C: How was your experience in the US Army? Has it had any impact on your modeling career?

V: It was very challenging and definitely made me a diverse person with being able to adapt to different situations as in w ith my modeling career. The military is not for everyone.

C: We are all counting down to Full Figured Fashion Week! As the spokesmodel for the event. who are you looking for ward to interviewing on the red carpet? V: Well to be honest I am actually excited to meet all the different designers and models! bY shannon hiett Plus size women have a new series to look forward to watching on TLC; which premiered May 29th at 10/9 Central featuring Lee Lee's Valise Boutique in Brooklyn; hence the series title of Big Brooklyn Style. The series features shop owner, Lisa Dolans personalized shopping experience with three customers per episode that require assistance in their navigation of plus size styles and their bodies. Lisa Dolan was kind enough to take time out of her undoubtedly plus size schedule to speak with PLUS Model Magazine about her new series and what it is like to work with Stacy London, one of Big Brooklyn Style's executive producers.

SH: How did this new series opportunity for Big Brooklyn Style with TLC come your way?

SH: How long has your boutique, Lee Lee's Valise been open? Where exactly are you located?

LD: Stacy L ondon, our executive producer was in our store the second day we were open. She immediately recogn ized that we were f ill ing an important niche with fashion forward clothing for the plus community. A few weeks later we were featured on What Not to Wear and have been on more than twenty times. We first talked w ith Stacy about our own show three years ago and now it has finally happened.

LD: Lee Lee's Valise celebrated its five year anniversary on May 5, 2012. We are located at 368 Court Street at the corner of President Street in beautiful Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. Born in Brooklyn, we intend to always stay in Brooklyn and serve our neighbors and friends in the same way that stores did in the 1940's. Personal service where they know your name and make sure that you are satisfied with your purchases.

SH: Why did you decide to open Lee Lee's Valise?

SH: I see that you sell online as well as retail in store; where does most of your customer base come from; internet shoppers, walk-ins, or regulars?

LD: Most of our business comes from people who Google us or have seen us on one of our many appearances on What Not to Wear or other media appearances. When you Google "plus size boutique" we come up on the first page. Then, the customer either visits our brick and mortar store or orders something online. S ince New York has so many visitors we also have many destination shoppers who plan their trip around a visit to L ee L ee's Valise. Then they become dedicated online shoppers. We also have our regulars that found us one way or another. The walk-ins are the most fun. They were just walking by, and then I usually hear a scream before they come bursting in! Its a blast after that!

LD: I decided to open Lee Lee's because I lived in a beautiful area with many small hip boutiques that I could not shop in. There wasnt a place where someone like me cou ld walk in and try on fashion forward clothing and have a lot of options in making a purchase. I wanted to create a fash ion boutique, but just with different sizes. SH: Which is your most popu lar clothing item?

LD: My most popular garment is my Franny open cardigan. It is the perfect piece for layering or to cover your arms if you are sensit ive to that issue. I teach my customers to drizzle or leave it open and flowing down the side to elongate the torso and use a solid color to break up some of my prints which may be too much for some people without a little contrast. It is my bestseller and most of my clients have one in every color and style that I make.

SH: Whats the most exciting part of your journey with f il ming Big Brooklyn Style t hus far?

LD: The most exciting part offilming Big Brooklyn Style is what will be happening in the future due to the show. Our store and our ideas will be exposed to a much larger audience and it will enable me to help many more people. I can make more clothes and open new stores and bring the experience to rest of the country. This show allows me to reach so many more women and let them know that they can get clothes for the way they are right now. Not how they will look after t hey lose ten pounds or two sizes. That they can dress for who they are today, for that party on Saturday night and wear something that makes them feel good to work tomorrow! Plus size women everywhere wi ll not have to take the crumbs big companies give them. They w il l be able to dress as confident as they feel by wearing stylish clothes that look and fit great. AJA: No. I am lucky because my body goes w ith my image. I am a mother and a w ife. But you know what I have not iced about being a plus sized woman; people become in love w ith your talent. Hey, the person who needs to love my body loves it, so I'm good!

TIA: Interesting. So tell me a little about your must haves! What are some accessories you must have? And what is your favor ite shoe?

AJA: I love a jumbo sized cocktail ring, and I love stilettoes. Oh and textu red pantyhose like fishnets - love them, and of course my black framed glasses. (Laughs]

TIA: Who is you favorite designer?

AJA: Rachel Roy, because she has a real extra-large (laughsJ.

When I first read the script, I saw her in my mind almost instantly and had a feeling of who she was way before I reached the last page. I felt her pain. Sometimes I felt like she was invisible, but I also think that, with kids who are like Meredith, they a/ways leave something behind. They leave little clues of their existence that will be seen by those who choose to look.

Deborah: Have you experienced any weight bias as an actress? Do you feel like you have equal access to roles as a plus size act ress?

Betty: I just want to portray great characters and people that everyone can relate to. I want to be someone who could be your sister, your cousin,

but also be comfor table. I am a photography student in London, so I think that what I wear reflects the amazing creative energy of that place. I do not have a set style. It is whatever catches my eye and looks good on me. It is actually much easier to get great clothes for me in London. I can get great outfits on High Street. I think every woman in my position wants to look and feel good and be able to walk into a store and walk out with a fabulous outfit.

What can we look forward to you doing in the next year? I do a little bit of everything, and I do not see that changing. As they say, variety is the spice of life ! Modeling for just over a year, I have done most of my modeling locally so spreading my wings into other markets could be the next step. Name your favorite store to shop for curvy clothes in your hometown. I love Gussied Up located in Toronto. Who is your style icon? Past: James Dean; how can you not pay respect to a past style icon who still to this day photographs of him exude what I consider to be the epitome of cool. James Dean for me, whether it be in a basic tee and jeans or a sharp suit, always looked amazing. If I were alive during his prime I would definitely have looked toward him as my style icon. Present: David Beckham. We are constantly bombarded with images of Posh and Becks - in print, at events, photos of them walking down the street, and rightly so. They are a stunning couple and their fashion sense is almost always spot-on. David Beckham is my style icon because he always looks amazing no matter what he is wearing. He isn't too outrageous in what he wears and the way in which he dresses makes it feasible in my mind that anyone can mimic this style and pull it off looking just as fantastic as he does. There is almost an effortlessness to his style as well, in the sense that for David Beckham he doesn't appear to be trying too hard to look good: but he just does- every single time. Whether it's casual day-wear, nighttime or formal wear I look to Becks as a present day style icon. How did you find out about BGM Models?

I read an article online, which featured BGM founder, Darrianne Donnelly talking about the lack of plus size male models in the modeling industry. People had always told me that they thought I had great eyes and smile, and I thought "Why not?" So here I am!

What do you think about being an "authentic" plus-size model? I think the most important thing about being an "authentic" plus-size model is having the confidence within yourself to portray a healthy body type. It's about embodying positive self-esteem and being a role model for those who are not the equivalent of a size 6 and showing that you can be big and beautiful and at the same time healthy. What is your favorite brand? I tend to gravitate towards Ben Sherman, MARCS and ZARA MAN when I shop. There is something about the quirkiness of the Ben Sherman designs that draws me to them; while the winter trends of MARCS allow me to either dress up with their range of jackets and trench coats while their knit sweaters are great for casual everyday wear in colder weather. I love ZARA MAN because it's very unique to Melbourne men's fashion. The designs are very European and I can almost guarantee I will find something there that I can't find anywhere else. What is unique about you? Physically- My dark features such as dark hair, eyebrows with a combination of my light colored eyes (they change between blue/green/grey) allow me to morph between looking typically Caucasian as well as appearing European. Meeting with the models: On the evening of day 2 we headed back to En Boga Restaurante to meet the 17 curvy beauties who would be gracing the runway.

Puerto Rico's most well known plus size model, Ana Garcia was in attendance looking beautiful as ever. It was great to be able to chat with her about the budding industry in P.R..

Each one of the ladies was beautiful and embodied true curves and confidence. They ranged in size from 12 to 18.
