From the President As they say “time flies when you’re having fun.” What a fabulous first half of this GSNA year. I have been having a blast! It is hard to believe that in a few months I’ll be a PP (past president). But the fun and learning isn’t over yet. Cindy Ham, Mark Conoly and Mike Pollard are planning this year’s Equipment Academy to be held January 15-17 in Perry. If you’ve never been, consider attending this incredibly informative meeting. It’s a very efficient way to learn about equipment essential to our work. February brings visits to our State legislative leaders and the Georgia Legislative Conference. Stephanie Taylor, PPL chairman, and Linette Dodson, co-chair, along with our legislative consultant, Mary Frances Williams are planning a conference that will guide us through the legislative process and provide attendees with tips for getting the most out of our legislative visits. We should never underestimate the importance of connecting with our legislators. Also in February, Regina Williamson, School Level Chair, will be coordinating our annual training for food assistants known as SNAP training. The one day training sessions will be offered 3 times across the state and are focused on the needs of the kitchen staff. And don’t forget about our State wide fundraiser “Light up the Night to end Childhood Hunger. ” Donations can be made in honor or in memory of people special to you. Or place your order for sparklers!! We’ll light up the night with our sparklers at the final event of this year, GSNA’s annual conference in beautiful Jekyll Island. Don’t miss this issue’s conference information. One glance at the agenda and educational sessions is proof of the planning that has gone into providing you with a fantastic conference experience. Register now. Come be a part of the only professional organization for those dedicated to school nutrition in Georgia. Take advantage of these networking and learning opportunities provided by GSNA. I look forward to seeing you there!

Winter 2013

Executive Director’s Message Dear GSNA Members, Although OLD MAN WINTER seems to be on his way at the moment, I have so enjoyed the absolutely gorgeous leaf colors this past month and know you have also. Like the varied colors in the trees, our lives constantly bring us changes and we have to cope with these. As a past president of GSNA once told me, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.” Are you feeling especially flexible this year? Don’t forget to take some time for your self and reflect on your own “Thanksgiving thanks” list. Health, grandchildren, healthy children eating lunch and breakfast in your schools, and wonderful new menus probably make the list! And we at the GSNA office are so thankful and delighted to know each of you, who do such a grand job of “building healthy children ready to learn,” every school day. Plus we are excited to welcome the new baby in the GSNA office, Averi! Patrice gave birth to Averi on Nov. 13th, 2013. Congratulations to the new family! We have enjoyed a successful and busy few months of GSNA activities, including the Kick Off Luncheon, CROP Show, Executive Board and Committee Days, and Manager’s Retreat in Savannah. You may have heard about the fabulous “CHOPPED” session at Manager’s Retreat given by Vanessa Hayes. It was truly outstanding! If you missed any of these you really missed some great training and networking. Of course, we are busy working on our events that begin after the new year, with a Board meeting, Equipment Academy, SNAP Training, Georgia Legislative Action Conference and Annual Conference in April (Jekyll...Here we come). Our Manager’s Retreat in Savannah, was another marvelous success, thanks to the planning and imagination of School Level Chair Regina Williamson, assisted by System Level Chair Vanessa Hayes. We all learned that “THOSE

The learning, networking, laughter, and sharing of ideas was, as always, a rewarding experience. The dates and locations for our SNAP Training (School Nutrition Assistants Program) are in this magazine and on our web site. They are all in February. Be sure to watch your e-mail and the GSNA Web page, plus GSNA Facebook page, for the information. In the office, we are working on this issue of Georgia Gems, Conference planning, Equipment Academy next month, legislation, public relations, and membership. And we are already working with President elect Kelly Schlein on plans for next year! Don’t forget our Georgia Advocacy Conference, Feb. 4–5, 2014 at the Holiday Inn Capitol. This meeting takes the place of individual Legislative visits by GSNA Districts. Someone from every District should be attending the meeting and training on the first day, and then on the second day, we will visit the Capitol in a group. We must continue to help legislators understand that “A Hungry Child Cannot Learn.” Enjoy your friends and family over the holiday season and rest up for all of the remaining GSNA and school nutrition activities in the next few months! ell the holidays are fast approaching and I hope that everyone is trying to settle into the new regulations. It will soon be time for us to spend with family and give “Thanks” for all things in our lives. I hope that your National School Lunch Week was everything you imagined and more! I am always proud to be a “lunch lady.” I know over the years we have tried to improve our image from how society has defined us through TV shows and books. I feel we have made great strides towards becoming a professional and managing our part in helping students become successful at school. We all must remember that we are the front line for our School Nutrition Programs and we might not be able to change the regulations, but we can always adjust our attitude in handling every situation as they are presented to us. School Nutrition Employees are probably the most versatile on the

planet. Superman has nothing on us. We are able to leap tall buildings in a single bound but still produce awesome meals to our students all over the state of Georgia. I am only a call away or send the Bat signal for me to assist you. The theme of this message is that we are superheroes and touch lives daily! Not all professions can claim that in their line of work. The progress that we have made in this short time only shows what the rest of the school year has in store for our students. I want you to always remember that “We are School Nutrition!”

ell it’s that time of year again! We are settling in to our routines, feeding children, educating the community, showcasing initiatives, and changing the game. We are becoming a vital part of the educational process. School nutrition is like no other profession, we do more than just feed students, we change lives, we become advocates for a healthy America, and we become whatever is needed of us because we have the ability to connect, implement, and create change all with a meal. What is our part as system level affiliates? It is our job to inspire those we work closely with. Inspire them to be the very best as well as present and serve the absolute best quality meals available. It is our job to reconnect those at the grass roots level with our purpose, our history, our mission, and our destination. We have to make sure everyone around understands why we do what we do. Once that piece of information is shared it sparks a huge connection of pride, an overwhelming sense of purpose, and a wonderful feeling of being chosen to perform such an amazing task. We understand that success can be achieved by being who we are and standing on the platform provided by GSNA. We need all leaders to get motivated and reconnected. Being a member of our wonderful organization should not be a choice, it should be a given! We have to understand that our success is directly tied to our commitment and participation in GSNA. Who are we to demand excellence when we offer mediocrity? GSNA provides professional validation to what we do on a local level nationally. Being connected gives a voice to those who normally would not be heard. This is our chance to serve up our

4

Light up the Night Join GSNA for an evening of fun under the stars on Friday, April 11, 2014. We’ll dance to the sounds of a party DJ, enjoy good food and unite in an opportunity to help children and families in our communities. As night falls, we’ll light up the night with sparklers and together we will continue the fight to end child hunger. 28.8 percent or one in every four, of Georgia’s children lives in food insecure households. This means that nearly 600,000 children under the age of 18 don’t always know where they will find their next meal. According to Share our Strength every dollar you donate through the No Hungry Kid program can connect a child in need with up to 10 meals. Your tax-deductible gift will provide vulnerable kids with nutritious food and teach their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals. There are several ways you can be a part of this very important fund raising event. • Place your sparkler order now and we’ll have them ready for you at the Friday night beach party. • Make a donation in honor of someone special to you. Tell us their name and address and we’ll send them a card to inform them of your tribute. • Make a donation in memory of someone and we’ll post their names to our memorial board which will be on display at the party. Place your order here or include on your conference registration form: You may reproduce this order form as needed.Make checks payable to GSN Foundation and send check and order form to: GSNA – Attn: Valerie Bowers, 2372 Main Street, Tucker GA 30084 Each box of sparkler contains 6 sparklers and is $5.00. Advocating for Georgia School Nutrition and Our Members by Stephanie Taylor and Linette Dodson, GSNA Public Policy & Legislation Co-Chairs

T

he Public Policy and Legislation Committee works throughout the year on issues that impact school nutrition programs on the national and state level. Our association membership plays an important role as the voice of child nutrition. Every legislative contact made, either on the local, state, or national level, increases awareness of school nutrition and the role our programs play in reversing the childhood obesity epidemic. During the FY 2013 Legislative Session, Governor Nathan Deal and legislators demonstrated their strong support for School Nutrition funding by eliminating the proposed budget cuts that were in the Amended FY 2013 and FY 2014 budgets. Many thanks to our membership for the calls, emails, and contacts made to the Governor’s Office. Your voice was heard!

GSNA 2014 State Legislative Issue Paper INTRODUCTION In 1946 Congress passed the “Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act” largely due to the efforts of Georgia Senator Richard B. Russell. Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture administrates the school meals program at the Federal level, while the Georgia Department of Education’s Child Nutrition Office manages the program at the state level. In Georgia we serve an average of 1,180,000 lunches daily, and an average of 554,000 breakfasts. The number of schools offering universal free breakfast to their students in 2013 is 376. We have a participation rate of 75.5% percent in our school lunch program and 34.3% in the breakfast program. Additional key points are as follows: • State funding is provided in the form of a salary base to assist with reducing meal prices and promoting quality meals. • No state funding is provided for breakfast.

22

• The majority of school lunch and breakfast programs in Georgia are predominately self-supporting and receive little or no direct local funding. Average cost

of producing a lunch (labor, food, equipment and overhead) is $2.75 per meal. • The money generated by meal service pays for salaries, benefits, food products, new and replacement kitchen equipment, some facilities, maintenance, and computer hardware and software. • School meals programs make a significant financial impact on Georgia agricultural products. During school year 2011-2012, Georgia’s School Nutrition Programs purchased food products valued at $353,192,644 in addition to receiving USDA commodity foods valued at $52,532,885. • Georgia also benefited economically during school year 2011-2012 through USDA’s purchase of Georgia agricultural products for use in nutrition feeding programs nationwide. ISSUES • Provide Georgia’s children with quality school meals that promote optimum health and optimum body weight to insure they are ready to learn. • Continue critical state funding to maintain quality school nutrition programs. • Support adequate funding for Georgia public schools. • Increase the funding for the Public School Educators Retirement System (PSERS) from the current $14.75 towards the $16.50 cap per year of service.

Improved Student Nutrition Through The CEO Program by Nicole James, GSNA 2013-2014 Culinary Arts Chair & SN Director Butts County

A

s a school nutrition department in Butts County School System, our team is always seeking out innovative ways to accomplish our mission of boosting participation in our healthy-eating programs, and we are so excited to be a part of the new pilot for the Community Eligibility Option (CEO). What better way is there to help achieve three top-priority goals in our school system through one single program? We strive for higher participation by our stakeholders, healthier children in our classrooms, and better relationships between our schools and our community. Thus, the Community Eligibility Option puts a “Capital C” in the word “Community” in our mission to serve our children in Jackson, GA. The key to good nutrition is not only preparing healthy food options, but actually getting students to participate in the school nutrition lunch and breakfast meal program. The CEO program allows qualifying school systems to offer both school lunch and breakfast at no charge, which in today’s economy can be a life saver for struggling families. The Butts County School System has introduced the CEO program for the 2013/2014 school year with a resoundingly positive result. The school nutrition department is serving approximately 43% more students at breakfast and 18% more at lunch. Our elementary schools are serving an average 91% of students at lunch and between 76% and 96% at breakfast. Our middle school is averaging 96% at lunch and 56% at breakfast. The high school is averaging 86% of students at lunch and struggling at breakfast with only 22% of Bridgford 03_7.75 x 5 3/9/12 2:19 PM Page 1 students048-1154 participating.

The implementation of the CEO program is only the beginning to actually getting students to participate in the school nutrition lunch and breakfast programs. One of the keys to the success of the CEO program has been the introduction of a new student salad bar at Jackson High school, serving a variety of fresh vegetables daily. The new salad bar meal option is serving on average 125 students per day. Students are choosing from a spinach salad and romaine mix adorned with fresh vegetables such as juicy grape tomatoes, crisp sliced cucumbers, bell pepper rings, chilled baby carrots and bright green broccoli florets. Proteins include a choice from perfectly diced ham, shredded cheddar cheese and cubed grilled chicken. Improved breakfast participation has been through a breakfast in the classroom program at two of the three elementary schools. Breakfast carts have been strategically placed in the hallways making it both appetizing and convenient for students to partake in a healthy breakfast in the comfort of their classroom. Our success to improve nutrition of the students in Butts County is the partnership that has been forged between the school nutrition program, school administration, parents and the community. These partnerships were developed through activities such as the system wide lunch and learn, positive newspaper coverage, school board support, and other promotional activities. Butts County has come together as both a school system and community to ensure our future through investing in both the educational and nutritional needs of students, which is the true purpose of our mission.
