MAY NEWS LETTER
By the time you read this a long established Plymouth motorcycle dealer will be closed for good. Damerell’s on Mutley Plain pulled down their shutters on the shop for the last time at 5.30pm on Saturday April 30th. The workshop at the rear remained open just to complete repairs on customers bikes already in the workshop. It’s sad to say even this stopped and the workshop closed for the last time on Friday 13th of May, an ominous date you will agree. Four staff remained on the premises until the end, two of the staff do not wish to be named or their future plans disclosed, this of course must be respected.

Of the other two Jack intends to set up his own motorcycle workshop in St Judes doing repairs and MOT’s. If you give him a couple of weeks to get set up and want to give him a try you will be able to phone him on 01752 269699. Plymouthmcc wish's Jack the very best in his venture. The one remaining member of staff Matt who was good enough to supply most of the information for this article will be staying with Damerell’s and will be based at the Cornish branch working in the sales department. All the very best to Matt from Plymouthmcc and thanks for all the info. If you have been a customer of Damerell’s and would like to continue using them, you can. If you want your bike repaired just phone the Cornish branch and they will come and pick your bike up for you, that service is completely free of charge, all you have to pay for is the repairs. Many storied have abounded as to why Damerell’s closed down in Plymouth, one story is, it’s because GT’s now have the Kawasaki dealership, they went Bankrupt, were bought out, so on and so on. None of these story’s are true, it is simply because the building needed a tremendous amount of work to bring it up to standard and it was not worth doing as far as Damerells were concerned so they decided to close. There are not many Business of any kind that you never hear any one say a bad word about, Damerell’s Plymouth was one of the few. No matter who you spoke to every one only had good to say about them. Surely that is a brilliant Indictment to the professionalism and dedication of the staff something to be proud of. Damerell’s Plymouth would like to thank all the customers who have given their custom over the last thirty eight years, it’s been a pleasure to serve. The committee and members of Plymouthmcc wish all staff the very best.
Below is a page from the Herald from 1978 when Damerell’s first opened.
Ken and Denis’s Trip to Quiberon
Denis and I booked overnight on the Saturday which was virtually empty, they only used one deck, and that was only half full. We decided not to go for the whiskey tasting so we only had a few light refreshments before getting to bed. Sunday morning was a leisurely affair as we had plenty of time to have breakfast etc. before disembarking at ten o’clock. Then it was off to Niort for our overnight stay at the BB Hotel. This was a good ride with no hold-ups or dramas. Having booked into the hotel it was off to the Buffalo Grill for something to eat then back for a few snifters. Monday was dry and bright and we travelled to Ourador-sur-Glane and spent a good three hours visiting the Martyr Village. Then it was on to St Amante de Montmoreau (one hour north east of Bordeaux) where we were to stay with Denis’ friend. The first night is a little blurred as we managed to consume copious amounts of good port after tea. We were on the top of a hill with the nearest shops at the bottom. Tuesday was a chill out day (or so I thought until Denis suggested we go shopping). Then it was up and down the hill twice. I was a little the worse for wear after the second trip as I don’t normally do walking. On Wednesday we were going to visit Bordeaux and go by train but got our underwear in a tangle and never made it. So more trips up and down the hill until it was suggested to us that there was a place of interest about fifteen minutes away. This was the village of Aubeterre (reputed to be the prettiest village in France). There is what remains of a subterranean cathedral which was well worth the visit. It was after this visit that one of the dogs escaped and it took quite a while for two men in flip flops chasing all over the local gardens and fields to recapture it. It was quite a sight and a neighbour eventually took pity on us and caught the offending beastie. Thursday morning was cool and clear and we were looking forward to a good ride up to Quiberon 320 miles north. Everything went well until just before Nantes then the roads were completely jammed. This meant filtering for about 30kms until we were clear of the jams and able to put on any speed. We hit more traffic at Vannes then it was nose to tail all the way into Quiberon. Altogether not a nice experience.
When we arrived at the rally site Kevin, Kelvin and Titch were there to meet us. After putting up Denis’ small (??) tent it was time for another walk to collect some provisions which we failed to do properly and had to ask Kevin to collect a few bits and pieces for us when he returned. For the rest please refer to Titches report. Arrival back in Plymouth was not exactly smooth with the Border Force at Passport Control holding everything up, it took us about 45 minutes just to clear from the Port. Even with the ups and downs a bloody good trip and rally and we would like to thank all who organised and attended the rally for a marvellous time. Ken and Denis
Hangar Des Kelts (Titch, Kev, Kelve)
After an excellent ferry crossing, which included a couple of night caps before we retired to our cabin, we arrive in Roscoff. Very ably led by Kev, and his trusty sat nav, we journeyed to Quiberon through beautiful countryside on some excellent twisty roads (and a couple of green lanes!) a thoroughly enjoyable trip. Many thanks to Kev. On arrival we were warmly greeted by the “Hangar” boys and were invited to pick the pitch of our choice, so we chose exactly the same spot we had last year. Our two respected “former Royals” (Ken and Denis) arrived later in the day, armed with 2 litre bottles of Taylor’s Port, after travelling approx 300mls from southern France! Once they’d set up their tent, which resembles something Billy Smarts Circus could have made use of, we decided to “ Yomp” into town. We met Kelvin, who was staying in a hotel on the seafront, and sat outside a seafront bar to soak up the sun and some very delightful local beer. Later we “Yomped” (a little slower) back to camp and enjoyed a “little” glass of port before retiring for the night. Friday-1st thing, feeling a little deflated, my bed had gone down!! We were joined by Phil’s daughter Jade and her partner Gareth. 4 tents on our pitch now, but we kept a space for Trevor. We were looking forward to him arriving as he entertained us last year with his tent erection techniques but he disappointed us by making a really good job of it this time! Prior to this me, Kev and Kelvin had gone to Carnac on out bikes. We did a tour on “Le Petite Train” which included an explanation of places of interest and in particular the famous megalithic stones (which we had never heard of by the way) but it was thoroughly enjoyable. On the way back I bought a new bed. Continued on next page
In the evening the camp was getting a little busier, the bar was open and the band kicked off, we had a beer and some more port! By now Pat, Roy, Rick and Pete had arrived in Quiberon. Now our party totalled 16, as Jades friends, Emma and Andy had joined us on the campsite and Phil and Heather were in their camper van just outside.
Saturday morning we started with egg and bacon “banjos” which were superb! Many thanks
to Ken, Den and Phil for supplying and cooking and Kelvin for bringing the fresh baguettes from Quiberon.
After brekky, me, Kev and Trev walked into town along the seafront which is very rugged but beautiful. In the square was a big market of local produce. It was fascinating to see it all on display, it is obviously all very good as it was extremely busy. We met Pat, Roy, Rick, Kelvin and Pete. Pat had some strawberries which she said were delicious. We all sat in a café and had drinks (non alcoholic!) Whilst sat there we spotted Ken and Den on a scouting mission. Arranged to see every one back at camp later. Me Kev and Trev walked back and on arrival there was a competition going on to see how far you could throw a Harley cylinder head, we watched from a distance! By now it was quite busy, especially the bar area, and a lot of interest in two young scantily clad young ladies having their photo’s taken in various poses draped over motorcycles. Needless to say, us, as gentlemen didn't take any notice of this nonsense!! Some one must have used my camera for those pics!! Everyone staying at the hotel in town arrived later. All of us campers decided that it was not a very good idea to carry provisions back with us on the bikes, so thought it prudent to finish the wine beer and port that was left!! We all met up and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening watching the bands and the “sexy” show, which didn’t involve any of us I hasten to add! Sunday– We were up fairly early to pack up, said our goodbyes and hit the road. We travelled back safely, Kev, Trev, Ken and myself were very ably led by Den back to Roscoff. Took a different route which was most enjoyable on good roads passing through many places of interest. Many thanks to Den. Met the rest of the gang and enjoyed a lovely dinner of moulles and frites before getting the ferry home. Thanks to every one involved for a truly great time and am looking forward to next year. Titch
Well, it looks like another brilliant trip for the Plymouth Pirates once again, nice to know every one had a good time and the trip was worth it. A big big thankyou to Ken and Titch for taking the time to put together the experiences of all the crew who ventured to the rally. Good write up guys.

An absolute brilliant turn out for the second Plymouth bike night with a total of 497 bikes which raised a further ÂŁ591.67, bringing the total so far to ÂŁ931.25. Many thanks to all who turned up and donated.
There are some real bikers in Plymouth as it turns out, and 37 of them turned up on a wet and wild night for the third Plymouth Bikenight. Well done to them all and they raised another ÂŁ42.22 for the charities. A big well done and thank you to the marshals for turning up in less than favourable conditions to make the night possible at all, and of course all the traders.
Coast to Coast Run 3rd July 16 First ever ride for this one, organised by Pete Batten to help celebrate the clubs 20th Anniversary. Timed for when we should be guaranteed good weather, if you have never ridden this road then you have missed a jolly good ride. Bideford is a lovely place to end up for a ride, stop for a cuppa and a cream tea before a leisurely ride back home. Great day out.
