THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF PRINCESS MOTOR YACHT SALES

Welcome Dear Princess Owner/Enthusiast Welcome to the 17th issue of My Princess, the official magazine for Princess Motor Yacht Sales and its dealer partners from around Europe and the Mediterranean. 2018 was a year of growth and success for Princess Motor Yacht Sales, with increased presence at international boat shows and a new office opening in Neustadt, Germany. We have introduced new additions to the Princess range, including the Princess F70, V60 and V65. We also announced the revolutionary new Princess R35 with a global launch at Cannes Yachting Festival in September. This exciting introduction to the R Class has wowed customers so far, and I know it will not disappoint on our R35 roadshow this year. We are now in what will be the busiest year yet for Princess Motor Yacht Sales, with expansions across our dealer network and within our company itself. A number of important customer events and international boat shows are in our diary for 2019, so there is sure to be an opportunity for you to meet our team, experience the Princess community and view our display of luxury Princess yachts. The all-new Princess Y85, V78 and F45 had their global launches at Düsseldorf Boat Show where they certainly impressed with their innovative technology, spacious interiors and sleek design. We are looking forward to sharing with

you more launches throughout 2019 and into 2020, with new models on the horizon including the Princess X95 - the latest in Princess super flybridge design, plus the newest addition to the V Class, the V55. If you’ve been a regular recipient of this magazine, you will know that we like to feature our owners and invite you on board to experience their Princess journey. This issue, we’ve included a fascinating story about Tim Parker, an adventurous yacht owner who will inspire you to journey further than you have done before. We’ve also included a few extras, including advice on cultural destinations to travel to, an introduction to our new Swiss dealers and an interesting interview with a Metal Shop craftsman who has seen Princess Yachts develop over the last three decades. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those customers who took part in our Customer Satisfaction survey in 2018; this simple yet important exercise helps us to improve our business for the future, so we encourage more customers to take part this year. We hope that you continue to see further improvements made across our company from this initiative. I do hope you enjoy this edition of My Princess and I look forward to seeing you all during the season or at the upcoming boat shows! Yours sincerely, Colin Capewell, Managing Director Princess Motor Yacht Sales

NEW PRINCESS Y85

She delivers a unique and luxurious experience within her spacious and flexible layout, with the ability to travel fast and in style. Designed in collaboration with long-standing naval architects Olesinski and Italian styling house Pininfarina, she is innovative, unique and unmistakably Princess.

T

he Princess Y85 had her global launch at Düsseldorf Boat Show earlier this year as part of an 11-yacht display. Her innovative features and incredible styling

did not go unnoticed, with spectators queuing to get a glimpse of this impressive new model. The exterior styling by Pininfarina emulates that which has been already seen on the revolutionary Princess R35, delivering a futuristic yet elegant profile with dynamic lines and expansive windows in the topsides of the deep-V hull. Her flexible galley arrangement has been crafted to suit all lifestyles, allowing the owner to choose between open plan and closed galley at the touch of a button. When it came to designing this new model to the Y Class, three key areas needed to be covered - light, space and guest comfort. This is increasingly apparent as you travel between the large aft sunpad through to her al-fresco living inspired flybridge. Enjoy undisturbed views from her single-level main deck,

DÜSSELDORF BOAT SHOW 19th - 27th January 2019 Since 1969, Düsseldorf has hosted its annual boat show to the international market with great success and increased growth year on year. To coincide with the celebration of the show’s 50th anniversary, Princess Yachts displayed a stunning line-up of 11 yachts on what was the largest Princess stand to date. Boot Düsseldorf is now the largest indoor boat show in the world, taking place over 9 days in January - it is now the prime time to get your boating fix before the season commences. Amongst the 11-yacht line-up were 3 global launches; the dynamic Princess Y85, the spacious and luxurious F45 and introducing the new flagship of the V Class, the Princess V78. Visitors to the show were able to enjoy a new concept in yacht design across these three models thanks to a collaboration between the well-known naval architect Olesinski and the Italian designer, Pininfarina. Joining the global launches on the stand, we had members of our other classes plus a very special nostalgic piece.

Project 31

Princess Y85

Launched in 1965, the Project 31 was the first boat Princess ever built. Production continued until 1973 and over that period some 240 boats were built, mainly for the UK and northern European markets. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Princess Yachts, this 1968 model was meticulously restored paying particular attention to its heritage. The Project 31, followed by the Princess 32, 33 and 37 in the 1970’s, established the company on the international boat building scene and laid the foundations for the current Princess range from 35ft - 130ft. When you compare the Project 31 to the revolutionary new Princess R35, it is clear to see how Princess yacht architecture and design has advanced whilst still remaining true to its heritage. Here at Düsseldorf Boat Show, visitors were able to indulge in the new concept of the R35 whilst being able to compare it to the traditional qualities of Project 31, and the larger yachts also on the stand. The impressive R35 in electric blue took pride of place at the entrance to the Princess stand, ensuring an extraordinary experience from beginning to end. The stunning all-new Princess V78 had her global launch at the show, presenting itself as the flagship of the V Class range. From the moment you step onboard, her quality in craftsmanship and detail is clear to see. With a grand central access from the bathing platform to the cockpit with flexible seating and a spacious galley aft arrangement - ideal for socialising and entertaining - the V78 has been built with yacht owners in mind, combining luxury and practicality into this contemporary build. She certainly won’t disappoint on performance either, with a top speed of up to 39 knots, and her pioneering lightweight deep-V hull ensures a smooth ride.

Princess Yachts Limited saw impressive sales of 21 yachts at this year’s Boot Düsseldorf, worth in excess of £38m. With a strong order book confirmed for 2019 and 2020 along with the announcement of the new V55, Princess Yachts is sure to grow in its success in coming years. Düsseldorf Boat Show had record numbers of 250,000 visitors attending with Princess customers travelling in from all over the world to view what was on offer. Princess Motor Yacht Sales had a larger than ever presence at the show, with over 40 members of staff attending throughout the 9 days. We welcomed customers from our international markets as well as customers from Great Britain - with convenient flight links between Düsseldorf and the UK, we welcomed more British customers to the show than ever before, making it apparent that this show is now the place to be, replacing the former London Boat Show.

ARTS & CULTURE MONTENEGRO

Discover MONTENEGRO The pearl of the Mediterranean, Montenegro is fast becoming a popular destination for tourists and yachtspeople alike. Situated in the south of the Adriatic Sea, it is a Balkan country with a rugged mountain landscape, medieval village hubs and a narrow strip of sandy beaches that hug its coastline. Montenegro is home to a vast amount of natural beauty, as well as historical spots for those seeking art and culture.

P

odgorica is the capital city of Montenegro, marking it as the official commercial and cultural centre. Most of the city was destroyed during World War II, so what we see of the city today is mostly new built with modern buildings and ample green space around every corner. Indulge yourself in a number of cultural events in this capital, making sure to book tickets for a show at one of the theatres such as Crnogorsko Narodno, Gradsko and Dodest. Why not spend the day in the search of history and visit the ruins of Nemanjica Grad or the remnants of the city of Doclea, Stara Varos and Vezirov. For those seeking an opportunity to get in touch with nature in Montenegro, you need look no further than the National Park Skardarsko, home to the largest lake in Balkan; surround yourself in natural rugged landscape alive with rare species of flora and fauna. There are a number of activities you must do whilst in Montenegro according to their locals and their traditions. Taste

the ancient menu of Montenegrin cuisine on your travels - enjoy food and drink such as cicvara, kacamak, local wines, plus many other tasteful delights. Be ready to surrender your senses not only to an exquisite array of food, but also to the generous hospitality of the Montenegrin hosts who will welcome you with open arms. Discover the ancient traditions of Montenegrin Folk music with a local festival. Why not partake in traditional folk costume, an integral segment to Montenegrin life. Influenced mainly by numerous conquerors of the past, whose artistic goods and characteristic traits have designed the Montenegro we see today. The country’s history and geographical conditions come together to influence the choice of fabrics in the costumes, creating something that is vibrant and eye-catching yet traditional. Cetinje, known as the royal city of Montenegro, rests in the base of the Lovcen mountains; it is a treasure of Montenegrin culture and historical

heritage. Interesting architecture dating back to the 18th century line the streets of Cetinje, with splashes of greenery flowing through this small city. The monastery of Cetinje, built in 1701, has seen destruction several times through its past, however now it is the spiritual and political seat of the local people. Visit the relics of Saint Petar of Cetinje, one of the illustrious patrons of Montenegrin history. For those seeking art and culture on their trip, Cetinje is home to a wealth of art galleries, museums and parks; make sure you visit Orlov Krs, where you can enjoy a great view the city and the Lovcen mountains. Natural beauty and history come together seamlessly in Montenegro, creating the perfect destination to spend your time enriching yourself in local traditions, pasttimes and landscapes. With a host of pristine national parks, lakes and mountain ranges, juxtaposed with busy harbours, historical city streets and upmarket restaurants, Montenegro is a destination to discover.

Explore

Switzerland’s stunning

Three Lakes

The mountain range of Jura and the Three Lakes region of Switzerland presents its very own lake district, where rolling vineyard-cloaked hills hug the shorelines and chocolate-box ancient towns dot the landscape. Location-wise, the ‘Three Lakes’ (Lakes Biel, Morat and Neuchâtel) are in the west of Switzerland at the foothills of the Jura mountain range. Easily accessible, all three lakes are connected by an excellent canal network, making navigating the area by yacht a breeze. Lake Biel (Bienne) Fifteen kilometres long and up to 41.1km at its widest point, Lake Biel’s tranquil plateau lake is blessed with many historic points of interest including: • Biel – This town at the foothills of the Jura mountains is famed for being the watchmaker centre of Switzerland, with numerous watchmaking factories based here. The Omega Museum, displaying 4000 watches from the illustrious maker Omega’s history, is a good place to begin gathering knowledge of the industry’s significance to Biel. • St Peter’s Island – To surround yourself in natural serenity, head to this remote vineyard-covered peninsular, which is connected to the charming town of Erlach by a 4km path and also accessible by boat. Rooted in history, bishops, nobility and the Romans have ruled the former island. The first residents were monks who built the nationally significant former priory building that dates to 1127 and is now a hotel and restaurant. • Rebbaumuseum am Bielersee (Hoff) – Visit the museum devoted to regional historic winemaking paraphernalia, housed in a beautiful 16th Century manor house on Lake Biel’s left bank in Ligerz.

Lake Morat (Murten)

Lake Neuchâtel

The smallest of the three lakes, and of a shallow depth, Lake Morat attracts swimmers in the summer months as well as water sports enthusiasts. A visit here is not complete without sampling the area’s finest white wines at vineyard cellars and hostelries on its slopes.

Stretching 38 kilometres long and 8 kilometres wide, Lake Neuchâtel is the largest of the lakes. The hills surrounding its north shore are characterised by vineyards and make beautiful spots for swimming, surfing and rowing. By contrast the south shore is a vast reed-covered habitat for birds.

• Morat (Murten) – Amble around the quaint alleyways and arcades of this small medieval fortified town originating from 1170 at the southeast shore of the lake.

• Neuchâtel – At the foot of the vineyards is this charming medieval limestone-constructed town with a French feel, providing ample shops, restaurants, museums and theatres to while away the time in the most relaxing way.

• Avenches – Head just 3km from the lakeshore and you are in this delightful town, resplendent with a magnificent mix of Gothic and Renaissance buildings, arcades and important Roman heritage. The capital of Roman Helvetia, some 2000 years ago, Avenches features a well-preserved amphitheatre, which is still used today for outdoor concerts. • Papilliorama-Nocturama, Kerzers – Fancy a complete change of scene? Watch exotic butterflies go through the lifecycle at this fascinating tropical adventure world. Then pass through Nocturama to encounter a variety of nocturnal animals including sloth, tree porcupines, night monkeys, kinkajous and ocelots in a South and Central America jungle-created environment.

• Yverdon-les-Bains – If you are into wellness, why not pay a visit to this nearby attractive traditional spa town. • Champ-Pittet nature conservation centre – Get your binoculars at the ready as your marvel at nature in its most diverse at Switzerland’s largest marshland and unique bird paradise. Open from May to October, this reed-covered habitat known as ‘La Grande Cariçaie’, extends for 40km along Lake Neuchâtel’s entire southern shore.

See Princess Yachts at Ascona Boat Show Our Princess Motor Yacht Sales distributors will be exhibiting at Switzerland’s Ascona Boat Show from 19th – 22nd April 2019. We will be providing guests with the opportunity to see the R35 up-close with a technical demonstration and sea trials on the 23rd and 24th of April. For those seriously interested, you can register your interest by emailing sales@princess.co.uk.

What to see and do in Ascona While you’re in Ascona, an attractive low-lying village on Lake Maggiore’s northern shore, why not soak up its relaxed café culture. Ascona’s mild climate makes for pleasant evening strolls along its pedestrianised lake promenade. Venture into its narrow lanes and there are craft, designer boutiques, galleries, wine and spirit and souvenir shops galore. Ascona is also a resort in its own right, with prestigious hotels and excellent restaurants together with multiple sports facilities including an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool plus water sports, such as surfing and sailing. The beautiful unspoilt scenery of the neighbouring Tessin valleys offers great hiking too.

INTRODUCTION

What’s new in Lucerne At the beginning of the year, Princess Motor Yacht Sales announced the appointment of two new dealerships, with locations on Lake Zurich, Lake Lucerne, Lake Maggiore and within the beautiful Three Lakes region to help strengthen the presence of Princess in Switzerland. Hensa Lago Marina, based in Altendorf, Lake Zurich, and Herzog Marinecenter, which has facilities in Alpnach, Lucerne and Gersau, will offer the Princess range of luxury yachts to customers across these regions. Their partnership with Princess Motor Yacht Sales brings together three family-run businesses who all share the same commitment to excellent customer service. “ Switzerland is a stunning location for would-be Princess owners, and we have been keen to increase our coverage in this area. Both new partners have more than 100 years of history in the region, superb facilities, and an outstanding reputation, so we are particularly excited to have formed a strong relationship with them.” He continued: “We think Princess is a great fit for all parties and comes at a perfect time with our sector getting ready for the 2019 season of boat shows across the UK and Europe.” Managing Director of Herzog Marinecenter, Ivo Herzog, explains: “There is a real sense of excitement around this deal and we are looking forward to introducing our clients to the full Princess range. We will be one of the first Princess distributors to see the new R35, which will be arriving in Switzerland over the Easter weekend, and is the perfect craft for cruising the waters of the lakes in our region.” Bjorn Hensler, owner of Hensa Lago Marina, commented: “We have built a great facility here at the marina on the beautiful cruising waters of Lake Zurich, providing outstanding opportunities to display our new Princess Yachts as well as supporting and caring for the boats over the winter period. MALLORCA Bestowed with a treasure trove of pristine anchorages, Mallorca is renowned for its beautiful locations to while away your time in.

Recommended restaurants & beach bars: • Sa Foradada, Deià

Torrent de Pareis

Island of Cabrera

With its unique spot between two imposing cliffs divided by a river gorge, the cove is a one-of-a-kind photogenic beauty spot. Lying in the shadow of the Puig Major – Mallorca’s highest mountain – the location provides a spectacular backdrop to outdoor concerts in July.

A well-kept secret, Cabrera is an uninhabited island on the southern coast of Mallorca where the landscape remains undisturbed for centuries. Here, you can truly kick back and relax in total tranquillity surrounded by a secluded oasis of turquoise blue waters and a natural abundance of marine wildlife.

Cap Formentor

Camp de Mar

Cala Sa Foradada

Lying on Mallorca’s most northerly point, Cap Formentor will enchant you with each footstep. If you set sail from Pollença, you can’t fail to miss the sight of the opulent La Fortaleza. Featured recently in the TV Series “The Night Manager”, it is known as one of the most expensive mansions in Spain. If you decide to venture further, get your cameras ready as you may just spot some dolphins in their natural habitat.

If you’re looking to spend your evenings in peaceful solitude then why not drop anchor in this small resort. Picture yourself, relaxing and unwinding in a natural world of pristine soft sands, dazzling waters and a rocky coastline. These unspoilt shores are relatively protected from strong winds, creating the perfect cruising getaway.

Jutting into the sea are the distinctive jagged rocks of the Sa Foradada peninsular with a gorgeous natural bay offering splendid views to the Tramontana mountains beyond. Over the years, the salty waves and gusty winds have hollowed out an eyecatching 14m-diameter hole in this bizarre rock formation.

• Balneario Illetas - Beach Club, Calvia • Port Petit Restaurant, Cala d’Or • Ponderosa Beach, Playa de Muro • Illeta, Camp de Mar

MENORCA Escape to an island enriched with wondrous coves and UNESCO preserved natural wonders, absorbing archaeological sites and relaxing in the finest of restaurants.

Recommended restaurants: • Es Bruc, Santo Tomás • Trogloditas, Cala Morell

Cala Addaia This large natural harbour, surrounded by a pine-tree covered landscape and rocky coastline, is the perfect spot for those who love diving and a spot of fishing. This sheltered port is ideal if you crave tranquillity but offers few buoys and moorings, so we recommend getting there early to secure your berth.

• Cova d’en Xoroi

Cala Escorxada

Island of Colom

One of the best anchorages in Menorca, this secluded virgin bay is protected from the south wind. With its powdery white sand beaches and pristine blue water, it’s a peaceful paradise. Off limits to cars and only accessible by boat or by foot, it’s the perfect haven to truly get away from it all. Just remember to arrive with your food supplies as, being away from civilisation, Cala Escorxada has no restaurants, but then that’s part of its untouched natural appeal.

Well sheltered from prevailing winds, the Island of Colom has a large sandy area for anchoring your yacht. The scenic island encompasses part of the natural park, S’Albufera des Grau and has two beautiful coves to escape to and gently unwind. Offering arguably the best snorkelling in Menorca, you can experience some amazing underwater wonders, whilst on land the areas of untouched wilderness are equally stunning.

Cala Galdana The perfectly horseshoe-formed bay has been considered by many as of one of the most beautiful coves in the whole of Menorca. With aromatic pine wood filling the air, sparkling turquoise green water and glittering white sand, the bay is picture-postcard perfect, drawing many comparisons with the Caribbean. The location is also ideal for an overnight stopover as you will find good anchoring spots with a depth of at least 5 metres.

Cales Coves Cala Coves is a maze of 100 ancient, once-inhabited caves carved from its cliffs. A cherished spot for yacht owners, this sandy anchorage is approximately 3 metres deep. The bay is cocooned by cliffs, making it the ideal overnight mooring option.

26

• Los Bucaneros, Cala Binibeca

MY PRINCESS ISSUE 17

FORMENTERA If you crave island life but want to escape the crowds, then Formentera is the place for you. The most southerly of the Balearic Islands, it has only recently been made available to visit by boat, giving you freedom to explore its unspoilt natural surroundings. Isla de Espalmador Yacht owners adore the uninhabited Isla de Espalmador. It is a nature reserve with an expansive sandy beach and gentle west winds, which make it a perfect place for sailing. It presents a great territory for sailing and if you also love fishing, snorkelling and swimming, then look no further. Tip: Anchoring can be on sand with stretches of seaweed,so choose your spot carefully.

Illetas The long narrow beach of Illetas should be visited at least once in a lifetime. Often compared with the Caribbean or Fiji, this thin strip of pure white sand surrounded by crystal clear turquoise waters is truly stunning. Stay a while and you can enjoy undisturbed sunsets over the stunning blue Mediterranean.

Cala Saona Experience blissful tranquility on one of the quietest beaches on the island of Formentera, enveloped by red cliffs and a rocky coastline. Its pure, sparkling waters offer an idyllic location for diving and snorkelling amongst the marine life.

Recommended restaurants: • Tiburón • Molí de sal • Chezz Gerdi

The crystal-clear waters here beckon you to go swimming and snorkelling, with the protected bay offering a sheltered place to anchor overnight amongst a natural landscape of untouched sand, rock and seaweed.

Cala H’ort The beach of Cala H’ort, surrounded by sand and pebbles, is a popular anchorage providing spectacular views of the magical rock, Island Es Vedra. This mysterious uninhabited island is said to be the third most magnetic spot on earth, rising majestically out of the water. If you decide to pay a visit to learn more about its hidden myths and legends, be sure to make a wish and see if it comes true.

The wind blows smoothly here, so overall it’s a very secure place to anchor your yacht.

OWNER’S STORY

“It showed me what was possible”

There’s no finer reward after selling a successful business and retiring than buying a boat. Many do, but few then take to it with quite the enthusiasm of Tim Parker, the son of a World War 2 Royal Naval submarine commander.

T

he signs were there from the beginning. His first boat, a Sunseeker Portofino 31 bought in 1989, was kept in the UK. One day Tim decided to use the boat to go to lunch. He went to Cherbourg for the ‘Fruits de Mer’. The Sunseeker was later transported to Spain where Tim and his wife Vanessa have a house at La Manga Club near Tomas Maestre Marina, 50 miles south of Alicante on the Mar Menor. A Broom 44 took its place. With more accommodation, the boat had far greater cruising potential. So, Tim took it down to the Tomas Maestre Marina and back. As you do. “It showed me what was possible, but I always felt like I was pushing at its boundaries a little” Tim tells me. So with a taste for distance cruising, Tim went shopping for a boat that would satisfy his needs both for covering ground and for spending extended periods aboard. “I personally prefer sports cruisers to flybridge boats. Although they have less ultimate space for a given length, I like the lower profile, the lower centre of gravity and the single level external deck area that keeps everyone together but also grants the space for everyone to spread out. With a retractable roof it also allows you to be in an open boat without being blown to bits or roasted by the sun”. After an extensive search, in 2002 Tim found the boat

32

MY PRINCESS ISSUE 17

of his dreams, a Princess V65 for sale with Princess Motor Yacht Sales. Fitted with a pair of MAN 1050hp shaft drive diesel engines which give a 35 knot top end and an easy 25 knot cruising potential, it was a boat with both the legs and the sheer space to fulfil his needs. He called it ‘Songbird’. “We spent the first year getting used to the boat in the Solent with the help of Princess Motor Yacht Sales.” Some modifications were made concerning the living space - the boat came with two garages for example. Tim kept one but had the other converted into a cabin, taking crew accommodation from one to three and adding an en suite.

At deck level the aft canopy was extended to a framed type that took enclosed deck living right to the back of the boat or provided shade with the sides removed. Batteries were upgraded to almost double the standard capacity, a water maker was added, a Bauer dive compressor fitted and refrigeration and cooling upgraded, including a crushed ice maker and champagne cooler. Safety kit was upgraded and even dedicated drawers for Admiralty and Imray charts added to the cockpit. The net result was a boat that could go anywhere within reason. So Tim did. “There are only so many times you can go around the Isle of Wight, so in 2004 we started the big adventure. My good friend, a very competent seaman called Sam Toogood, joined me on board and we headed for the Med. We crossed the Bay of Biscay, initially to Biarritz then followed the coast around, past Portugal, up through the Straits of Gibralter and finally to Tomas Maestre Marina”.

OWNER’S STORY TIM PARKER

The following year they headed east via Sardinia and Corsica for Pisa in Italy, then followed the coast via the Cinque Terra villages and ports like Portofino and Monte Carlo. “There is no finer way to visit a town than arriving by boat” Tim explains. “The harbour is the hub of any coastal town. Arrive by land and you have to work your way through the usually industrial outskirts. Arrive by boat and you land right in the centre of the action and in the most attractive part”. In 2006 it was the Amalfi Coast before turning south and heading for Stromboli and the northern islands of Sicily. 2007 and ‘Songbird’ headed for the Adriatic and Venice before diving into the myriad of islands that create sheltered cruising and stunning scenery off Croatia.

After a trip like that, you could forgive Tim for resting on his laurels and enjoying the quiet life close to his home port. In fact, the delivery trip was just the beginning. Aided by Sam, and joined regularly by his wife, his family and a rotating host of friends, the real adventures began. “That autumn we took the boat to Casablanca in Morocco. It was an amazing voyage, on the way we took the boat up the Sebou River to a city called Kenitra. They’d never seen a boat like it and the harbour master insisted on organising an armed guard! For two days we had an old retired Moroccan army colonel with only one tooth sitting on a bollard next to the boat with a rifle on his lap”.

MY PRINCESS ISSUE 17

2008 was a big one, four months on board and a cruise to Greece to explore the Greek Islands. “The boat worked brilliantly for living on board. It was a travelling hotel and an entertaining space as well as a boat (we could get 11 around the cockpit table, eating freshly caught fish and all manner of shells grilled on the barbecue). We always had a succession of guests joining us”. 2009 was mostly France and the following three years the Balearic Islands. “There’s not a cove we left unexplored. We fell in love with Ensenada de Eubarca. It’s a cove in Ibiza surrounded by huge granite cliffs, with good holding but a 20m bottom. Too wild for most boats. The enormity of the place shrank Songbird. Sam would entertain us by jumping 30 to 40 feet into the sea from dizzyingly high ledges in the cliffs. Mallorca, however, the next island, is the best island in the world - it’s got everything. Mountain ranges, the weather, remote coves, sandy beaches, lost fincas and meadows, beautiful coastal resorts like Andratx and Cala d’Or and there is the fabulous architecture and sophistication in Palma, not to mention the restaurants. In fact, almost every cruise we made involved a trip to Mallorca. The island is so accessible for everyone in Europe.” In 2013 Tim turned the bows of ‘Songbird’ north and headed back to the UK, but even that was not without adventure. “There was a northwest (often force 6 or 7) blowing for a month. At one point we got stuck in Nazare in Portugal which faces the Atlantic and is the location of the largest surfed wave in the world. Twice we tried to leave and were beaten back by the waves. On the third attempt we pushed on into a two metre swell. At Finisterre (the north west corner of Spain) we suddenly found ourselves in the kind of incredibly long Atlantic swell normally only found well offshore. We

were able to surf down the face of the swells at 20 knots before labouring up the next one and over the top at 8 knots. 12 hours later we were having a well-deserved drink at the yacht club at La Coruña, northern Spain”. 40,000 sea miles later ‘Songbird’ is back in the UK. After a few local trips (comparatively at least) over the last couple of years (Isles of Scilly, La Rochelle, into the River Seine to Honfleur), ‘Songbird’ is reluctantly for sale with the brokerage team at Princess Motor Yacht Sales, due in part to Tim losing his faithful crew Sam, who recently settled in Cornwall with his new lady after his father died, and Mike his brother (‘Songbird’s engineer at sea) after two hip replacements. Tim also now finds hauling lines, and reading the dipsticks at 77 hard going. “I’ve done it all too”, he says. “It has been an amazing and incredibly capable boat, and a real credit to its designer, Bernard Olesinski. We’ve done far more with it than perhaps might have been envisaged and it has weathered whatever we could throw at it and coped brilliantly”. And the 12 years of nomadic cruising? “A phenomenally rich period full of millions of experiences from enjoying a G&T on the foredeck in perfect surroundings to scrabbling around town trying to drum up as much cash as possible for a refuel in a small port that won’t take cards to assisting with a medical emergency to anchoring in the most blissfully scenic bays in the world. It’s been the most life enriching experience. That voyage to the Jostedal glacier in Norway, maybe that’s for ‘Songbird’s next owner”

‘This story is dedicated to the memory of Mark Toogood, a dedicated and much-loved friend who spent many years aboard Songbird’

STAFF INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW

Conner Moore

Retrofit Technician, Princess Individual Words by Nick Burnham

Conner was 17 years old, halfway through his A Levels and aiming for university, when he saw an advertisement for an apprentice position with Princess Motor Yacht Sales in Plymouth. “I’ve always been quite ‘hands-on” says Conner, “I’ve helped my step father with construction projects for years”. So when the opportunity presented itself, he grabbed it with both hands. Conner started with Princess Motor Yacht Sales at Sutton Harbour on the Barbican, joining the PDI (pre delivery inspection) team that examines and tests every facet of brand new Princess yachts as they are delivered from the factory, ensuring that each function and every surface is in perfect order. “I worked with the PDI team for two years - it gave me a real understanding of every inch of a Princess yacht - how things work and the terminology, but it also helped me learn to work as a team - it brought me out of my shell and was a great introduction to the business”. Conner even spent some time working at the Princess Yachts factory in the pre build department, putting together small assemblies like bilge pump systems. As well as working here, Conner also went to college one day a week. “I initially completed a Level Two in electronic engineering, then progressed to a Level Three qualification in electrical and mechanical engineering. I completed an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification) in which I was assessed regularly at work. It really helped to develop my skillset as well as my knowledge of boats”. After gaining his qualifications and following those instructive two years within the PDI team, Conner progressed to a full time role with the Retrofit team at Turnchapel, Plymouth. “Retrofit is a whole different series of challenges. We’re taking completed boats and retrospectively fitting often complex equipment to tailor the boat to an owner’s needs. It might be fitting a water maker, installing full boat wifi or audio-visual upgrades. It’s a job that has really broadened my horizons - so far I’ve visited Mallorca, Switzerland, Italy and Germany”. Conner describes one particularly challenging retrofit installation. “We had a customer with a Princess F55 who wanted to be able to run 240-volt systems, including a Seakeeper stabiliser, overnight without the need for shore power or running a generator. We worked with Mastervolt, creating schematic drawings and wiring diagrams to build and deliver a tailor-made system that involved five 24-volt lithium-ion batteries linked to two Mastervolt Combi inverter/ charger systems. It was a huge and challenging operation that

involved fitting large amounts of bulky equipment into an already finished boat, but it was massively satisfying to pull off”. Now 23 years old, Conner is a valued member of the engineering team at Princess Motor Yacht Sales, completely vindicating that decision six years ago of taking the apprenticeship route to his present career. STAFF INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW

Pete Gibson

Hardwood Machinist, Princess Yachts Words by Nick Burnham

Working in the engineering and crafting of Princess Yachts for 35 years, Pete has seen the design change from traditional models to revolutionary introductions, such as the Princess R35. Here, we are given an insight into Pete’s experience within his role at the shipyard, looking at how all the components come together to create a finished Princess yacht.

“I’ve been with the company about 35 years”

How did you start with Princess Yachts? I started my career as a furniture maker, making not just the furniture but also the tooling to create it. I saw a job advertised with what was called Marine Projects in those days for a wood machinist, applied and got the job. How long have you been working with Princess Yachts? In total I’ve been with the company about 35 years. I began working at the company’s Valley Road site as a wood machinist before being promoted to charge hand. I later moved to creating intricate parts for the furniture and I now work at the Coypool factory which is a huge facility that assembles much of the large kit parts, such as the furniture, that is eventually fitted to the boats in build. I create a huge variety of items, things like the trim to the backs of the helm seats. How does the process begin? We start off with design drawings and dimensions from the design studio. It’s then down to us to see whether we can physically create what has been asked for. Sometimes it’s quite a challenge to match a complicated request, but there’s almost always some way of doing it. And of course, every single model requires its own bespoke items. It’s not simply a case of making one part that is then used across multiple boats, they’re all unique. What do you make the parts out of? They’re made from hardwoods. Walnut, oak, beech, tulip, those kinds of materials. The choice of material will in part be governed by the customer’s specification for the boat.

Have the designs changed over time? We’re working with much larger items these days, especially for the bigger boats. And the designs can be far more sophisticated and intricate than they used to be. Has the process changed much over the years? Yes, very much so. We used to do everything by hand and then it would be clamped into blocks. Now we use computer driven CNC machines, grinders and other power tools which improve both the efficiency of manufacture and the quality of the end product. What happens to the products you create? After we’ve made them, they go to the ‘furniture shop’ and will be used in the production of the furniture. And once that is assembled, it will go to the ‘paint shop’ to be finished as specified by the customer, typically a high gloss or satin finish.
