welcome to the 22nd edition of My Princess. The clocks have changed, it’s now officially summer and time to enjoy getting out on the water. There has been some resemblance of normality since last September, especially with the European boat shows last Autumn. After a pause on many public events, we were delighted to meet customers face-toface again, and welcome new members to the Princess family at the Southampton International Boat Show and the Cannes Yachting Festival. There was a real sense of being re-united, an upbeat vibe and so many people enjoying a good catch-up. Shows were very well attended and it was a pleasure to welcome visitors onboard, eager to see the line-up, global launches and show debuts. Following the unfortunate cancellation of boot Düsseldorf in January, Princess Yachts took the opportunity to hold its first Exclusive event at the prestigious Royal William Yard in the brand’s home of Plymouth. The 8-yacht line-up included the all-new Princess X80 and Princess V50, and was incredibly wellreceived. We were also pleased to support the inaugural BoatLife Live boat show held at the NEC in Birmingham. Princess Yachts scooped 3 accolades in the Motor Boat Awards 2022, following rigorous sea trials with the Princess Y72 in the Flybridges over 60ft category and the Princess F45 in the Flybridges under 60ft category, plus a ‘Highly Commended’ in the Custom Yachts category with the Princess X95. The yachting industry remains vibrant and we are pleased to announce a new dealer has joined the network – we welcome BJ Marine in Ireland. Premier Marinas in Swanwick, near Southampton, have created a new sales pavilion, and we are delighted to be moving our office to this fantastic new facility this summer. And a new office has just opened in Puerto Portals in Mallorca with the official launch event taking place on Saturday 30th April during the Palma International Boat Show. We are also delighted to announce that our sister company, Argo Yachting, has been awarded exclusive distribution rights to market the Italian designed Pardo Yachts in the UK. With over 50 years of innovative expertise from Cantiere del Pardo, Pardo Yachts are renowned for their exquisitely designed ‘walk-around’ models. In this issue, we’ve included detailed reports of the exceptional all-new Princess X80, V50 and Y72 from industry experts Nick Burnham and Jack Haines, along with some incredible boating destination spotlights on the Lake District and Southern Spain. We also spoke to two of our Princess customers about their experiences onboard, cruising in South Devon and the Balearics. I hope you enjoy our latest customer magazine to kick-start the busy season, packed full of inspiring articles. I’d like to wish everyone a fantastic summer on the water and I very much look forward to seeing you at one of our events this season.

The new Princess V50

AQUAHOLIC’s Nick Burnham joined the Princess team at the Princess Exclusive event held at Royal William Yard in the brand’s hometown of Plymouth back in January. Here’s his take on the new Princess V50. The original Princess V50 was one of the brand’s most endearing and most enduring models. Launched in 2018, it offered a real sweet spot for owner operators, being compact enough to be easily managed yet spacious enough to offer premium features like a full-beam owner’s cabin with a large en suite, the option of a dining area or third cabin on the lower deck, and a VIP cabin with a scissor-berth option allowing two single beds or a double. For 2022, Princess has launched the latest incarnation V50. A keel-up brand new design, it retains everything that made the original great, but layers on new highs of styling, features and standards of fit, finish and flourish.

4

Styling The new V50 is quite simply sexier. From the lower profile roofline of the deck saloon, complete with contrasting dark grey accents and a choice of feature colours, to the curve of the sheer line and details like the concealed engine vents, this is a great-looking boat. Practicality For all its supermodel looks, Princess has been careful to ensure that this yacht is even more practical in daily use. Cleats and fairleads have stainless steel extensions to lift mooring warps clear of the gelcoat, preventing dirt and wear, and in the engine room every single pipe and wire is clearly labelled. Versatility The V50 is transformer-like in its ability to adapt. Triple-sliding saloon doors, one-touch electric windows, and a huge solid sliding roof section mean that the deck saloon can be as open or as climate-controlled as you like. Scissor berths in the forward cabin swap from V berths to a double, the dinette table lowers to create extra sleeping, and a TV slides smoothly out of the sideboard for movie nights. Quality From the diamond-stitched helm seats that wouldn’t look out of place in a luxury sports car, to the fit and finish of the multitude of interior fabric and cabinetry choices, there is no doubt that you are aboard one of the finest 50ft yachts on the market today.

“The new Princess V50 is quite simply sexier”

September 2021 BOAT SHOW REVIEWS Back to normal – almost. With a pause on physical boat shows over the previous couple of years, there was a feeling of some normality and a lot of excitement – with just a sprinkling of anticipation – as we all geared up for the September shows last year. Nothing beats face-to-face interaction when it comes to the yachting world, and Princess was delighted to exhibit some fantastic line-ups, including global launches and show debuts and, of course, to welcome customers back onboard.

Southampton International Boat Show 10–19 September 2021 Back – bigger, bolder and better than ever before. British Marine pulled out all the stops with the redefined and much-loved SIBS at Mayflower Park and on Europe’s largest man-made marina. Defined zones were created to guide visitors easily through the exhibitors’ stands showcasing yachts on and off the water, lifestyle, merchandise, gadgets and gear. The Festival Green made a show debut hosting evening music and refreshments for all to enjoy. One of the key objectives of the show was focused on engagement – getting people out on the water, from dinghy sailing to motorboat rides and SUPs, and everything in between. The show organisers also placed great importance on sustainability.

6

Princess Yachts showcased five yachts, including the dynamic Princess V55, the sporty S62 and S66 sportbridge yachts, plus the award-winning F45 and F55 flybridge models in the marina, and experienced queues of visitors eagerly waiting to have a look onboard. As the UK’s largest yacht manufacturer, Princess continues to place sustainability at the heart of its business, aligning its manufacturing processes to become more sustainable; implementing more responsible waste management systems; and continuing to support the Marine Conservation Society, the UK’s leading marine environment not-for-profit organisation. Princess has also announced some exciting news about partnerships and new innovative projects, including the Hybrid X95 and a brand partnership with Salcombe Gin.

7

Cannes Yachting Festival 7–12 September 2021 One of the most glamorous boat shows on the circuit, who doesn’t love an excuse to travel to the beautiful South of France? With the perfect climate, the Princess display sparkled in the Cote d’Azur sunshine with an exceptional eight-yacht display. Visitors flocked to see the first glimpses of the global debut of the all-new Princess Y72 motor yacht and the European premier of the awardwinning Princess X95 – the first model in Princess’s new super flybridge X Class. The on-water display also featured the S62, S66 and S78, along with the F50, F55 and the dynamic V60 within the Vieux Port. Furthermore, Princess announced their continued commitment to setting industry benchmarks in sustainability and reduced environmental impact.

PRINCESS Y CLASS

Y72 Deputy Editor of Motorboat & Yachting, Jack Haines Exterior running photograph, Paul Wyeth

With storm clouds gathered over Plymouth, we took the opportunity to gain a true insight into the seakeeping ability of Princess Yachts’ Y72. The Y72 is indeed a big boat, at 71ft 5in (21.8m) and nearly 52 tonnes half-loaded, it is both physically larger and heavier than the F70 it replaces. Somehow, it feels even larger than the bare numbers suggest when you’re on board. And despite being the smallest model in the Yacht range, it feels more of a scaled-down motoryacht than a large flybridge cruiser. It’s a handsome thing, too – imbued with classic Olesinski lines, but breathed on by Pininfarina, with curves in all the right places.

11

The call was made to head to the mouth of the River Yealm, which offered a decent burst towards the east with the worst of the swell nibbling out our hindquarters. From the magnificent perch that is the Y72’s upper helm, the boat, spurred on by the might of twin MAN V12s and their 3,3000hp, barrelled through the following swell with almost indecent composure. Even in these conditions, with waves of 1.5m if not a little more at times, we saw speeds of 30 knots as the hull pushed through the water, sending angel wings of spray shuddering away from the bow. What’s most impressive is that the Y72 can handle conditions like this in two different ways. With the fin stabiliser engaged (gyros are an option as well) you can set the throttle back a touch and just let the hull and fins do the work, the former disposing of the lumps with nonchalance as the latter ensures roll is kept to a comfortable minimum. But, as with every Princess flybridge I’ve tested, the steering dynamics are so good – even on a model of this size – that if you want to hand steer the boat it’s incredibly rewarding. The steering is light considering the size of the machine, but this just makes the boat feel so manageable at speed. Upwind, though the breeze picked up the spray and dashed it across the flybridge at times, the hull felt similarly comfortable with the speed pulled back a touch to around 20 knots. The difference in ride between our Princess F55 chase boat and the Y72 was marked, as the knowing glances of those of us fortunate enough to be onboard the larger boat acknowledged. The F55 is no slouch at sea, either, but the extra size and displacement of the Y72 made for remarkably serene progress given the sea state. Things only improve at the lower helm, which is not always the case given you are closer to the waterline and can often feel the bite of the sea state more. Despite there being twin 24.2-litre

12

V12s mounted in the deck below, the saloon is a seriously hushed place to travel. The sound levels only just creep over 70db at WOT, which is all the more remarkable considering the conditions. The glass in the saloon is just extraordinary, so much so that there is no real penalty to driving from the lower helm as the view is almost as good as upstairs. The helm seats, which are a new design, look and feel lovely and have been angled perfectly so that you don’t have to perch on the edge of the base to interact with most of the helm controls. The MFDs are a little bit of a stretch but the three big screens present boat and navigation data beautifully, including a Böning boat management system – standard on all Y models – which displays a feast of engine information in superb clarity. Part of the Y72’s allure is that it will top out at nearly 31 knots, but you can also throttle back to displacement speeds, activate the fins and boost the range to cover large distances in comfort. If you just need to get somewhere or are doing a night passage, then the warmth and protection of the lower helm where you have the boat’s systems at your fingertips and the crew can gather around in comfort would seem the place to do it. The Y72’s interior is typically demure but the design and layout of the saloon works so well. All the furniture is set at the perfect height to ensure the windows and whatever it is they allow you to look out upon are the stars of the show. Nothing about the interior feels as if it has been done for show; it’s attractive and beautifully built but clearly designed to be used. Note how the flooring cleverly segues from timber to carpet amidships so guests can pop inside the saloon without getting the carpet wet, for example, and how easy it is to access the generous under-seat storage.

improvement and delivers an en suite bathroom with twin sinks and a vast separate shower.

Understated luxury

The aft galley has bars at either end, with the option to have a pair of stools inside so guests can draw up and have a coffee in the morning or something stronger in the evening. It’s an easy deck to move around because it has not been over-furnished and with the dinette located in a useful position opposite the galley, the area amidships is free to be a relaxed lounging space where you get the full benefit of those spectacular windows. So vast is this space, in fact, it would be good to see a handhold mounted on the ceiling so there is something to steady yourself with when at sea. Having a run of seating beneath the windscreen adjacent to the helm is nothing new but Princess has upped its functionality by incorporating a sliding desktop that means you can rest a laptop here and tap away with the best view in the house. It was the 68, which preceded the F70, that first split access to the owner’s cabin and guest accommodation, and that same configuration makes an appearance here as well. The master suite has a private spiral staircase off to port from the main saloon, while guests use the traditional central companionway forward to get to their three cabins. The layout forward is a familiar one with near identical twins on either side and a double VIP en suite up front, but again it’s the quality and execution that is most noticeable. There’s a reassuringly expensive look and feel to everything you come into contact with, right down to the top notch fixtures and fittings in the well-proportioned bathrooms.

All models come as standard with a crew cabin and this is another area that is improved over the previous model. It’s genuinely equipped to a standard that could see it being put to use as a spare guest cabin if necessary but, if it is crew who are using it, it’s helpful that the new design incorporates direct access to the lazarette and engine room through a pair of watertight doors, meaning crew members don’t have to go out on deck to check on the machinery. There is a deck hatch in the cockpit for quick checks at sea, however. Princess hasn’t yet succumbed to the beach club trend but there is still some clever stuff going on at the transom. The hydraulic bathing platform has a weight capacity of 550kg so can carry a decent tender, but if the preference would be to keep that clear then the tender can be stowed on the flybridge and winched in and out with a crane. There is also a hatch above the platform that is designed to stow a pair of Seabobs with charging points so they are ready to go. The living spaces on deck are palatial, especially the flybridge, which has a ribbon of sunbathing space sweeping down the starboard side with a big wet bar opposite. Princess has swayed towards a slatted hard top as opposed to a canvas one and, though it’s an optional extra, expect 99% of boats to have it fitted. It’s a lovely bit of design and as neatly integrated as you could hope a solid top to be on a boat of this size. There is only so much you can learn from testing a boat in mill pond conditions – a tea tray with an outboard would be fine when it’s flat. Testing a boat in the rough opens a window to its character that simply isn’t as easy to find if conditions are too kind. On this test the Y72 showed that it is far more than just a very nice place to spend time with the sun shining and the anchor out. No one really wants to go boating in the conditions we faced but it’s reassuring to know that if you get caught out and have to knuckle down, the Y72 is up to the challenge.

Stairway to heaven

Despite the quality of the other cabins, the master suite still manages to steal the show. Not everyone will see the sense in gobbling up space in the saloon with a separate stairway to the master but it adds to the sense of occasion, especially as you catch a glimpse of the water through the hull window on the way down. It is a beautiful cabin and an area that is one of the main beneficiaries of the larger proportions over the F70. On that boat, the en suite was tucked in a corner at the forward end of the cabin but here the bathroom now runs behind the bed, which creates a much more spacious en suite but also adds another layer of sound insulation between the main cabin and the din of the machinery space. On every level it’s an

Cannes Yachting Festival

6–8 May

6–11 September

This show is hosted by MDL Marinas and takes place at Ocean Village Marina in Southampton. It boasts a mix of over 60 new motorboats and sailing yachts, enabling you to take to the water this coming season. A range of ancillary services, including boating gear and gadgets, finance and insurance, is also on offer. Entry to the show is free but do register for your tickets. One of the most glamorous shows of the season is held in Cannes at the Vieux Port and Port Canto against the romantic backdrop of Côte d’Azur architecture near La Croisette. With an eclectic display of boats from 3m to 50m in the water (under 10m on land) ranging across sailing, motor, monohull, multihull, rigid or semi-rigid hull, from the world’s leading shipyards, there is plenty to explore. Princess Yachts will host a fabulous display of their beautiful craft.

Hamburg Ancora Yacht Festival

Southampton International Boat Show

20–22 May

16–25 September

Although it’s not the first destination to come to mind, along the Baltic coast there are some fantastic spots to enjoy boating. There’s no better way to experience this than with the Princess team in their home marina in Ancora. Originally named the Hamburg Boat Show (Hanseboot), it was taken over by new organisers, YachtFestival365 GmbH. This is Germany’s largest in-water show and has approximately 180 boats on display and welcomes 180,000 visitors.

The UK’s largest annual boat show, now in its 53rd year, continues to go from strength to strength. Last year, British Marine redefined the show with a new expansive layout and the addition of the Festival Green. It also aims to engage the community and offers as many on-water taster sessions as possible from sailing to SUP and everything in-between. Spanning 10 days, this much-loved show attracts the key global luxury motorboat and sailing yacht brands on and off the water for serious boat buyers. You can book tickets online in advance to visit Mayflower Park and Europe’s largest purpose-built marina.

Barclays Jersey Boat Show 10–12 June After a 2-year pause, this Channel Island boat show will once again take place at St Helier Marina adjacent to Weighbridge Place. Renowned for being a key event in the Channel Islands’ diary, it offers an array of yachting and lifestyle exhibitors on and off the water along with an Outdoor & Active zone, refreshments and music, and attracts 30,000 visitors. Hosted by Ports of Jersey, this is a free-entry boat show.

British Motor Yacht Show 15–19 June A boutique show born of Princess, Sunseeker and Fairline is growing in presence and last year included a further 15 yacht brands from overseas. Premier Marinas in Swanwick will host this show on the picturesque River Hamble. Taking place later than usual due to marina works, it will also span five days to enable more visitors to enjoy the stunning displays of yachts with ease. Alongside Princess yachts, enthusiasts can also speak to the team about sister company, Argo Yachting, offering heritage US brand Chris-Craft, new award-winning Finnish Saxdor Yachts and Italian-designed Pardo Yachts. Visitors can also meet the brokerage team to discuss buying or selling pre-owned yachts with Princess Motor Yacht Sales and Argo Yachting.

CUSTOMER EVENT Barcelona F1 Grand Prix cruise 19–23 May A flotilla of motor yachts accompanied by the Princess Motor Yacht Sales team will set sail for the Barcelona F1 Grand Prix. It’s the highlight of the customer events calendar. The cruise will depart South West Mallorca for Port Vell in Barcelona from 19th–23rd May 2022, with motor yacht owners and others invited to join this memorable event. The itinerary provides ample opportunity to enjoy both qualification and race day, with time to enjoy Port Vell and meet with fellow yacht owners and enthusiasts.

PUERTO BANÚS AND

S O U T H E R N S PA I N

Nestling between elegant eateries and designer boutiques on the famous waterfront at Puerto Banús, Princess Motor Yacht Sales Marbella enjoys a setting that few dealerships in the world can match.

Headed up by Nick Case, a man with 35 years under his belt at Princess Yachts, it’s also a company with a very firm grasp on how special it can be to own a yacht in the rich and diverse cruising grounds of southern Spain. We spoke to Nick to find out how operating a yacht out of Puerto Banús can be good news for your logistics and your finance, as well as your cruising entertainment.

Nick Case and the ‘Marbella approach’

Having started his Princess Yachts career as a broker in Poole in the 1980s, Nick then headed up a Princess dealership in Gibraltar in 1990, before moving across to Puerto Banús in 1994. That’s where he established the Marbella arm of Princess Motor Yacht Sales, a dealership that is now enjoying its 28th year in business. And when asked about the secret to his success, Nick is disarmingly straightforward in his assessment of what really counts: “It’s about making life for our owners as easy as possible. A lot of our clients are from northern Europe. When they finish their holidays and head

16

home, they want to know that their boats are being properly cared for – so it’s not just about selling boats. It’s about the advice, the servicing, the warranty and the aftersales back-up. It’s about delivering a package that allows our owners to enjoy their boats without any stress, doubt or worry.” In Nick’s case, “making life as easy as possible” involves everything from servicing, cleaning and fuelling to mechanical maintenance, equipment upgrades, boat prep and even laundry. But that personalised service is clearly a key element of Nick’s approach to building client relationships that last. “We tend to build very close personal ties with our clients over time” says Nick. “In fact, they’ll often ring me directly if they need help and that’s part of what creates loyalty and enables us to move our customers up through the range. A lot of them have been with me for decades now – and we’ve gone through four, five, six boats and watched their whole families grow up. Eventually, I get to see their children coming in to buy their own boats, and that’s an incredibly satisfying thing to be a part of.”

‘‘It’s about delivering a package that allows our owners to enjoy their boats without any stress, doubt or worry.’’ 17

Better-value year-round cruising

One of Marbella’s greatest natural yachting assets is of course its climate. Nestling in the lee of the Sierra Blanca mountain range, it experiences an amazing 320 days of sunshine a year, enabling true four-season boating. And while the relative absence of coves and calas means that the immediate coastline around Marbella and Puerto Banús is best suited to day trips, its proximity to some amazing (and radically contrasting) destinations makes it one of the best yachting bases in the whole of Europe. “We’ve got Morocco just 36 miles away,” says Nick. “You can go west, round the corner to Portugal – and a lot of boats, particularly the larger ones, will base themselves down here and then cruise the Mediterranean. They’ll go up to Mallorca or they’ll go further east to Croatia or Greece before coming back here for the winter. And the fact that we’ve got Gibraltar about 30 miles away means we have easy access to duty-free fuel, saving our owners about 50% on regular Spanish prices. We have numerous golf courses nearby and you can ski in Sierra Nevada which is only a two-hour drive from Banus.” But as Nick explains, if you’re a UK resident with a boat in Puerto Banús, Gibraltar’s position brings much greater financial incentives than just cheap fuel. “If you own a UK (non-EU flagged) boat, the Temporary Admissions Scheme means you can keep it in EU waters for 18 months without paying your 21% VAT. At the end of that 18-month period, you have to take it out of EU waters to reset the clock. But from here, all you have to do is steam into Gibraltar for a night and, just like that, you’re set for another 18 months of tax-free boating.”

18

Through the straits: Spain’s Atlantic coast

As you head west from Gibraltar, with a tax-free boat and a tank full of half-price fuel, southern Spain’s Atlantic coast opens up a range of tempting destinations. Leaving behind the kitesurfing and windsurfing Mecca that is Tarifa, you will come to the ancient port city of Cadiz. Reputedly Europe’s oldest continually inhabited settlement, it’s a bustling place, mixing endless sandy beaches with a tangible sense of history and thriving maritime commerce. Head just a few miles further west and the Guadalquivir River invites you 70 miles inland, providing direct access by boat to the famously seductive city of Seville. While its historic centre, medieval lanes and UNESCO world heritage sites are worth the trip in their own right, it’s the buzz of the place that really hits home. Whether you want to head for a traditional flamenco club, time your visit to coincide with one of the city’s many festivals or simply enjoy the infectious hum of al fresco diners among its ancient plazas, Seville is a major highlight in any cruising itinerary.

As you head west from Gibraltar, with a tax-free boat and a tank full of half-price fuel, southern Spain’s Atlantic coast opens up a range of tempting destinations.

Cruising east: from Malaga to the Balearics

Having undergone extensive redevelopment over the last few years, Malaga is now one of the top tourist cities in the whole of Europe. It’s a place of historical buildings, cosmopolitan bars and memorable restaurants, all elegantly linked via expansive pedestrianised streets and enjoyed by a vibrant mix of happy locals and international tourists. The waterfront is being developed now too, with two marinas in the pipeline, plus high-end facilities for visiting superyachts, so it’s a really fantastic place to visit. But if you want something more intimate and low-key, Nick describes Marina del Este, a little to the west of Malaga, as “a superb stop for smaller boats, with a beautiful setting and lovely clear water for swimming.” If you want to go even further around southern Spain’s Mediterranean coastline, Alicante and Valencia are both perfectly accessible and so are the fabled islands of the Balearics chain. According to Nick, “Ibiza is about 360 miles away and Mallorca is about 450 miles away, so within 48 hours you can be on location, cruising the Balearics. In fact, if you’re happy to take your time and run at displacement speeds instead, it’s perfectly possible to do the trip in a 70-foot-plus boat on just half a tank of fuel – so it really couldn’t be easier.”

International destinations: Morocco and Portugal

While Morocco might not be your first thought when putting together your cruising plan, Tangier is now more attractive to visiting yachtsmen than ever before. Its glitzy new marina puts you right at the heart of the town, in prime position to experience a wonderful clash of traditional rusticity and upmarket refinement. From here, if you want an even more intense Moroccan adventure, you can just grab a taxi, head inland and immerse yourself in a culture that provides a thrilling contrast to Europe’s mainstream boating scene. According to Nick, if you want to explore the Portuguese coastline instead, that’s an equally easy day-and-a-half cruise from Puerto Banús. The gorgeous resort of Vilamoura makes a great stop on Portugal’s south coast before you reach the historic port city of Portimão in the western Algarve. From here, after you round Portugal’s south-western tip, it’s a clear run north towards Lisbon – one of the most dramatically beautiful coastal cities anywhere in the world.

What kind of yacht works best?

It seems that virtually every boat in the Princess Yachts range, from the V40 right up to the X95 and Y95, has a role to play in the Puerto Banús boating scene. While clients who have an apartment or villa nearby tend to go for smaller V-Class models that are well set up for day boating, those who have no local residence tend to use their boats as holiday homes, as well as entertainment platforms. According to Nick, clients like this tend to go for “larger flybridge-equipped boats with higher volume and extra live-aboard practicality.” They will often spend four to six weeks on board using Puerto Banús as a base from which to explore the entire Mediterranean. But as Nick explains, both for local day boaters and for more ambitious long-distance cruisers, the ongoing evolution of the Princess fleet remains vital: “There’s a DNA in Princess that endures from year to year and from Class to Class – and you can still see it, even in the most recent boats. It feels like there’s a really authentic heritage there and when you marry that with some of Princess’s amazing new designs – like those of the explorer-style X Class – it puts my clients in a great position to enjoy this magnificent part of the world to the utmost.”

AN DR E W N OALL AND HIS

PRINCESS F50

20

Age:

51

Home: King Point Marina, Plymouth Base:

North Devon

What’s your boating history?

I grew up in St Ives in Cornwall. Dad was part of the lifeboat crew so my brother and I grew up around boats. But having left Cornwall for work, it wasn’t until the age of about 42 that the urge to be on the water returned. We bought our first boat in 2008 – a Jeanneau Merry Fisher 625, which we launched and recovered all around the southwest and South Wales. And after the novelty of trailer boating wore off, we relocated to a dry stack in Plymouth, before upgrading to a Prestige 34S and then to a Prestige 390S.

How has it performed?

We’ve kept our boats at King Point Marina in Plymouth for a long time and, as one of the sites Princess uses to finish and commission its boats, you see a lot of them in the marina. I’ve always enjoyed walking the pontoons, looking over the various boats of a summer evening, so Princess is very much the home team and I’ve had an ambition to own one for many years.

It’s been fantastic. Having gone from 39 to 50 feet, it’s amazing how the modern design really maximises the volume. On previous boats, my wife wasn’t all that keen to sleep onboard but she absolutely loves the full-beam master cabin on the F50. The IPS pod-drive system has also been amazing. It feels almost like it’s reading your mind – and my brother and daughter love it every bit as much as I do. Beyond the space and the controllability though, it’s just the quality. I love quality. I want to see it in the fixtures, the fittings, the furniture. I want to see it everywhere and Princess is as good as it gets.

Why did you choose the Princess F50?

What was your yachting highlight of 2021?

Why did you pick Princess?

My brother and I narrowed it down to a Prestige 520 Flybridge, a Princess V50 and a Princess F50. Personally, I would have gone for the V50 because it’s one of the most beautiful boats out there. But when my wife and daughter saw the F50, there was no contest. They loved the ‘galley-up’ arrangement for the wide-open views and for the more intimate connection with the social areas of the saloon. They also loved the F50’s three-cabin arrangement and the extra deck space provided by the flybridge. So, it was the women in the family who had the casting vote!

For me, having guests on board is one of the major joys of having a boat – and since we took delivery in June 2021, the guest count is already in the mid-30s. We’ve had a couple of wonderful trips to Fowey and a couple to Salcombe – and another great moment was when we anchored off Whitsand Bay as the sun went down. We’ve seen a humpback whale not far from Plymouth, which was fantastic, and we’ve also seen feeding tuna, as well as dolphins. These are experiences you just can’t buy and we’ve enjoyed them all together as a family. It’s already enriched our lives in so many ways, I will never regret a single penny.

What are your cruising plans for the future?

Getting back to St Ives would be superb and the Isles of Scilly are also on our to-do list. But the southwest is our home and to be honest, there’s nowhere else we want to be. When we drive down after work on a Friday, it’s far enough away that it feels like a proper trip but it’s not so remote that it’s impractical. And we’ve got some of the world’s most iconic boating destinations like Salcombe and Dartmouth right on our doorstep. What could be better than that?

PRINCESS F62

If they’re doing this on the small stuff, the big stuff that really matters is going to be great quality.

What’s your boating history?

Why did you select the F62?

Why did you choose Princess?

How has it performed?

I’ve been well into boats since I was young. We started in smaller dayboats but my Dad got fed up with us dragging it around with waterskis when all he wanted to do was have 10 minutes to himself. He decided we needed a boat that would enable him to sit and relax while we went out on the jet RIB – so we made the step up to a pre-owned Princess 52, before selling that to upgrade to our new Princess F62. We’d been looking at boats around the 19-metre mark from Princess, Sunseeker and Fairline for many years. But the quality and modernity of Princess really stood out. We’re involved in motorsport as a hobby so we’re used to seeing tough, highquality stuff and we noticed the small things. The switches on the flybridge, for instance, were proper waterproof rocker switches, whereas on the other boats, you’d see regular mainstream switches with waterproof covers. All these little things caught our eye and we thought, “Well if they’re doing this on the small stuff, the big stuff that really matters is going to be great quality.”

22

We considered the S62 with the smaller sport fly and the sunroof above the lower helm. But because of the weather in Mallorca, we pretty much live on the flybridge so we really wanted the extra space and flexibility of the F62. There’s a big upper dining area and bar, plus a convertible second table for overflow, and a master sunbed at the back. When you’ve got 10 or 12 people on board, that’s just fantastic. The biggest thing we’ve noticed is the refinement. You don’t even know the engines are on when you’re in port – and whether you’re sitting at 10 knots or cruising at 20 knots, it’s so deadly quiet, you barely even know it’s moving. The fact that we have a gyro means it’s extremely smooth too and that’s a major bonus at anchor, as well as underway. We also love the space. You can have a whole group of people on board and, while some people are messing around in tenders, others can be sitting downstairs or sleeping at the front, while you’re enjoying a full-on party in the aft cockpit. And actually, the whole aft end is brilliant. When we’re not on the flybridge, we’re usually messing about with the tender so the high-low platform is massive for us. And with the bar area opened up and people making drinks in the aft galley, it’s just a fantastic place to be.

What was your yachting highlight of 2021?

Definitely our week in Ibiza. It was early September so the sea was still warm but the high-season chaos had died down and you could put the boat right in close, exactly where you wanted it. That north side of Ibiza is absolutely stunning, with some great restaurants and anchorages – and what’s really special is that, although we’ve been going to Mallorca for 15 years, when you have the flexibility of a boat like our F62, the things you can see and do are amazing. You see people and places, hidden beaches and wonderful restaurants, that you would never even attempt to get to by car or on foot.

What are your cruising plans for the future?

We want to do a bit more around Menorca and we’ve also talked about getting over to Sardinia and Corsica. We’d probably take it over and leave it there for the summer, so the logistics need a bit of working out, but that’s definitely going to feature in our plans. SPOTLIGHT ON

The Lake District Radiating sheer beauty, the Lake District is a very special place that brings together picturesque lakes, soaring fells, and stunning valleys. A captivating blend that makes it one of the most spectacular National Parks for inspiration or reflection. One that has sparked the literary imaginations of Williams Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

It’s also famous the world over for rugged outdoor pursuits. It was on Cumbria’s incredible terrain that the popular activities of fell walking, fell running and modern-day rock climbing emerged. For a true authentic Lake District experience, nothing compares to boarding a boat. From the water you get intimately connected with the twists and turns of the everchanging lakeside and the diverse wildlife that inhabits it. That’s why it’s great to keep your boat here and why Princess Motor Yacht Sales has a distributor here.

Derwent Water marina

Mooring at the well-serviced bustling marina of Portinscale, Keswick, you can take to the nearby Derwent Water and make the most of this pretty lake location. There’s an abundance of natural wonders to explore by boat, canoe and kayak, navigating peaceful sheltered coves and islands against the majestic backdrop of the Skiddaw, Cat Bells and Borrowdale hills. The location is also a hive of windsurfing and sailing activity. Why not have a go at stand-up paddleboarding?

Whitehaven marina

This great marina in the north-west coast of England offers handy access to the Lakes. It boasts 400 fully-serviced pontoon marina berths, plus many quay wall berths for larger boats.

Enjoying the waters

Excellent water sport centres serve all the main waters of Windermere, Ullswater, Coniston and Derwentwater. Lake Coniston – an attractive sheltered location encircled by Lakeland valleys – is the best place to enjoy kayaking. Feeling brave and don’t mind getting soaking wet? Then Keswick Adventure Centre might appeal with its ghyll scrambling and canyoning activity. Perform slides, jumps and scrambles as you descend the craggy Stoneycroft Ghyll in the Newlands Valley. Wild swimming in tarns, lakes, and rivers is a great way to appreciate the scenery and serenity of the Lake District. The deep-watered Bassenthwaite Lake is a popular spot.

24

Walkers wonderland

For anyone with even a passing interest in walking, the Lake District is an idyllic location for gentle ambles up to challenging rock scrambling. On the Haystacks fells, take a pleasurable walk up to the Blackbeck and Innominate Tarns. Start from either Honister Pass or, for a more strenuous hike, from Gatesgarth near Buttermere. Up for a bigger challenge? How about Scafell Pike (at 978m, the highest mountain in England). Taking approximately four hours to summit, the trail meanders through heather and grassland onto rocky scree and boulders. At the top of the summit plateau, the views on a clear day are amazing, combining Moasdale and Wastwater below and, in the distance, the southern lakes and Irish Sea.

Pretty villages

Chocolate box views are plentiful. Nestling in the Lakes’ heartlands, Grasmere is a delight to explore, charming visitors with quaint cottages, shops, pubs and cafes – and its famous Grasmere gingerbread. If you’re around Eskdale, the beautiful Eskdale valley encompasses picturesque villages like Santon Bridge and Boot. Whilst there, a trip on the Ravenglass and Eskdale steam railway is a must. While on the west coast of Cumbria, the view from Ravenglass (the National Park’s only coastal town) of the shingle beach and fishermen’s cottages looking out over the estuary is simply breathtaking.

SHEPHERDS

OF WINDERMERE

In conversation with Darren Grundy, Director, Shepherds of Windermere While Shepherds of Windermere has been at the heart of the Cumbrian boating scene for more than a century, its role has certainly changed over the years. Having started out as an independent boatbuilder in 1900, it gradually transformed into a local boat sales hub. And since the current owner, Darren Grundy, took the reins in 2019, it has gained even greater traction as a nationally-renowned boat broker for new and used sports boats, motor cruisers, RIBs and sailing yachts. Operating out of the prestigious Windermere Marina Village complex, Shepherds now sells in excess of 100 boats per year, more than doubling its sales figures for both new and used boats in the last three years alone. And it’s clear that Darren’s background as an avid boater and long-term Shepherd’s client has played a key part in that success, by equipping him to deliver what his customers want. “We’ve got a 10mph speed limit here on the lake,” said Darren, “so performance isn’t always at the top of the priority list. Instead, people tend to use their boats as sightseeing platforms and holiday homes, so it often comes down to the practicality of the deck arrangement and the quality of the accommodation.” In terms of that deck arrangement, there tends to be a natural divide between flybridge fans and those who prefer a more open-decked saloon. But having added Princess to his fleet in August 2021, Darren is confident that boats like the V40, F45, V50 and F50 are a great way to satisfy his customers in both regards. “With Princess, you always know that you’re going to get build quality, attention to detail and aftersales care. But what surprises a lot of clients is that when you put Princess next to the likes of Fairline, Sealine, Beneteau or Cranchi, the pricing is actually surprisingly accessible.” And according to Darren, that accessibility is also something that people love about the historic cruising grounds of Lake Windermere. “You don’t need to worry about the tides or the currents. All you have

26

to do is avoid the red buoys and stick to the speed limit and, with a well-chosen boat, you’ve got a home-from-home among some of the boating world’s most spectacular scenery.” But, of course, as a business that has been consciously engineered from the customer perspective, getting things right is about much more than just the hardware. “Whether you’re buying a million-pound Princess or selling a pre-owned £3,000 RIB” explains Darren, “our team will always make sure that you’re made to feel valued. It’s certainly what I wanted as a customer, so as long as I’m at the helm, I will make sure it remains at the very heart of everything we do.”

THE PRINCESS EXCLUSIVE EVE NT

Princess Yachts shine bright in Plymouth

Following the cancellation of boot Düsseldorf, it was an inspired decision for Princess Yachts to host their first very own Princess Exclusive event in their brand home, Plymouth, from 22-30 January 2022. Set against the majestic backdrop of the imposing former victualling yard, Royal William Yard, Princess celebrated the global launch of the all-new Princess X80 and the all-new Princess V50.

28

The invitation-only nine-day event also showcased the awardwinning X95, the Y72, S62, V55, V40, and F55 to customers, special guests, brand partners, local community organisations and press, as well as taking the opportunity to celebrate the talent of the 3,000-strong workforce. The U-shaped marina lent itself as the perfect venue for this private on-water boat show, which was simply breathtaking by day and elevated to another dimension at dusk when the eight yachts were lit – absolutely stunning. Will Green, Chief Commercial Officer, Princess Yachts, said “The proximity of Royal William Yard to our factories around Plymouth also allowed our employees and the local community to see a boat show line-up on their doorstep. We are extremely grateful to the team at Royal William Yard Marina and at Urban Splash for helping us bring this incredible event to life, as well as to the resident berth holders for allowing us to borrow their unique location.”

Eco installations

As part of its sustainability journey, Princess is committed to bringing environmental initiatives to the forefront. The message of sustainability and marine conservation was captured beautifully in the hospitality area with installations from partners Ecoworks Marine, Oceanographic, and Salcombe Distilling Co. Princess also exhibited sea life sculptures to display the all-new eco-friendly fabrics that are planned for the Princess range in the near future.

the latest Princess ‘Superfly’ X Class model The first of the ‘Superfly’ yachts, the Princess X95 combines magnificent yacht architecture with impressive sea handling and fuel efficiency, a partnership that stands out within the yachting industry. And, in January 2022, we welcomed

her sister ship, the Princess X80 super flybridge yacht. This class of yacht completely rethinks what we know about yacht architecture, delivering a new benchmark of luxury living space across four deck spaces and with a super flybridge which extends to the full length of the yacht. The new X Class is the perfect craft for those who wish to spend extended time aboard and venture further afield. Defined by innovative layout options with a host of distinct spaces, the X80 includes an enclosed bridge and skylounge on the upper deck, and an optional master stateroom forward on the main deck. Working together with Olesinski and Pininfarina, Princess has created the ultimate in avant-garde yacht construction with an evolved design meant for extended time at sea.

The best master cabin in its class? Jack Haines, Deputy Editor of Motorboat & Yachting, takes us inside the brand new Princess X80 Superfly at the Royal William Yard exclusive event. Weighing in at around 72 tonnes with a half load and measuring just over 80ft LOA, the X80 was designed by Princess Yachts, Olesinski Design and Pininfarina, with the same principles in mind that made the Princess X95 flagship such a runaway success. Key to the Princess X80’s appeal is the semi-enclosed top deck which incorporates the helm station at its forward end and a sky lounge that leads out to an aft deck complete with a large dinette, wet bar and two low-slung seating areas furthest aft. Side doors in the sky lounge give access to a spacious raised sunbathing area on the same deck, situated forward of the wheelhouse. With the helm up top, the living space on the main deck can extend right forward to the windscreen with an elegant staircase linking the two decks internally. The area at the forward end of the deck, which is flanked by glazing on three sides, is a wonderful dining and entertaining space in the standard layout but as an option can be home to the owner’s cabin with private access to the foredeck via floor-toceiling patio doors on the port side. Not only would that be pretty special for the owner but it would add an extra cabin to the lower deck’s four guest and two crew cabins. There are two MAN V12 engine options available, with even the smaller of the two good for an estimated 28 knots flat out. Siren Marine yacht monitoring

Humphree stabilisation system

This loyal Princess customer needed complete peace of mind that their boat was safe whilst they were overseas. Princess engineer, Gary, fitted a Siren 3 Pro device, which is the next generation in yacht monitoring. It goes beyond traditional GPS, giving owners the ultimate smart-boating experience, keeping you connected 24/7 via an easy-to-use app with global cellular and optional satellite connectivity, meaning that the owner can stay connected to their boat anytime, anywhere.

A new customer requested a comprehensive package of bespoke customisation for their Princess S66 across the entire retrofit offering at Princess Motor Yacht Sales, Plymouth. One key objective was that the owner was keen to incorporate some additional stabilisation whilst underway. Their S66 was already fitted with a Gyro Seakeeper but they requested enhanced comfort for their guests. The Humphree stabilisation system improves sea-keeping performance and enables the yacht to get onto the plane more quickly thanks to its award-winning interceptor design.

‘‘Our Siren Marine system has been brilliant in alerting us to; the shore power going down, the engine connectivity, someone entering the boat and you can check the cameras when people are working on board. All things that make you confident in the security of your valuable asset. And the team are great at getting the job done well and a delight to have onboard.’’

‘‘The Humphree Interceptors have provided a new level of stability. We tested the boat in a 2m swell in Plymouth and there was barely any roll when the stabilisation systems were active. Definitely a musthave on any boat. The friendly and knowledgeable Princess Motor Yacht Sales engineering team in Plymouth have been fantastic to work with.’’

YachtQuarters

THE ART OF S H A R E D B O AT OWNE RSHIP For all its indisputable pleasures, new boat ownership can be a complex and costly pastime. In addition to initial purchase and finance, you need to think about depreciation, berthing, servicing, cleaning, repairs and maintenance. And if you’re unable to use your boat as much as you had hoped, the collective cost of that could seem to outweigh the benefits. But in a world where the shared economy now encompasses everything from watches and cars to holiday homes and aeroplanes, the shared luxury yacht is now very much a reality. There are, of course, plenty of informal syndicates organised between like-minded boaters to help minimise expense but, if you want a professionally-operated scheme that cuts the costs and irons out the logistics without diluting the fun, YachtQuarters is one of the industry’s most exciting solutions. We spoke to Josh Cleaver, Sales Manager at Princess YachtQuarters, for the inside story.

36

What is the YachtQuarters programme?

“YachtQuarters is a way of owning a Princess Yacht at a fraction of the cost and having the full management taken care of by us,” says Josh. “It’s about getting as close to the true ownership experience as possible, but without the big outlay and without the fuss or complication.” As a shared ownership scheme operated by Princess Motor Yacht Sales, that ‘full-management’ approach involves everything from berthing and crewing to tailored on-board service and highly-integrated shore-based support. As Josh explains, in essence, it’s about taking the idea of fractional ownership and elevating it to the level that established Princess owners would expect: “Our YachtQuarters shareholders have a dedicated Yacht Manager and access to our Concierge team. We take care of the calendar, the maintenance, the insurance, the berthing and the hiring of the crew. That means you get to walk on and off with zero hassle – and that makes the yachting experience all the more special.”

How does YachtQuarters work?

The annual calendar is divided up into different seasons according to popularity. Each of the eight shareholders then gets four weeks throughout the year, allocated according to a series of blocking rounds, which rotate year on year, so that everyone has an equal opportunity for high-priority selections. That leaves 20 weeks spare for maintenance, ensuring that you get the use of a pristine yacht with a full Princess after-market warranty, alongside the reassurance that your financial stake in the boat is properly safeguarded. To help maintain high service standards, each YachtQuarters boat is professionally crewed as a matter of course and is run for a contracted period of four years. You are free to sell your share after just two years but, in all cases, once the four-year period is up, the boat is sold and the money is divided between the owners. The owners themselves get first refusal on whether they want to keep the boat and carry on privately but Josh’s hope (and his prevailing experience) is that they will be keen to carry on with a new YachtQuarters vessel. As Josh points out, that’s why there will always be a slight upgrade on the existing boat, “ready and waiting when the first boat finishes its term.”

For clients who want the slick service of a high-end charter, the Princess 68 is perfect. 37

YachtQuarters is a way of owning a Princess Yacht at a fraction of the cost and having the full management taken care of by us...

What kinds of boat does YachtQuarters involve?

While YachtQuarters has overseen Princess yachts at both 64 and 68 feet, Josh believes that the extra crew berth on the Princess 68 brings a marked step up in the calibre of the on-board lifestyle. “For clients who want the slick service of a high-end charter, the Princess 68 is perfect. In addition to the Captain, who manages the yacht’s operation, it also has space for a steward or stewardess who can serve the food, take care of the yacht and tend to the owners’ needs.” Critically though, a YachtQuarters yacht is not just about size. It’s also about sourcing a sought-after model of the right age and quality. The Princess 68 currently operating out of Mallorca, for instance, was sold new by Princess Motor Yacht Sales to the original owner and then serviced by them before it returned in part-exchange. So as Josh explains, “we knew the boat inside out. We knew it would be a great yacht to put into the scheme and one that would be easy to cover under warranty. Of course, it’s not a brand new boat, but it feels as close to new as it’s possible to imagine and that’s what our customers want.”

How much does YachtQuarters cost?

The Princess 68, which would normally cost around £2 million to buy, is made available to shareholders for around £275,000 per share, and Josh is very clear about the financial merits of that. “In four years’ time, when we sell that boat, the worst case is that you’ll get 50% of your initial share price back. If you then add £47,000 for each year of costs and divide that by 16 (for your total number of allocated weeks), it works out at less than £20,000 per week on board, excluding consumables. To charter a similar Princess 68 would cost around £34,000 per week before tax and consumables, so the value on offer is extraordinary.” It makes a lot of practical sense too, particularly in the current boat-buying climate. After all, with lead times for new boats getting longer, there can easily be a two-year wait for the delivery of a new 50-footer. But by investing in the YachtQuarters scheme, you can get straight on the water with moderate upfront costs and simply trade your share in when your new boat arrives.

Can you take a YachtQuarters boat further afield?

The YachtQuarters cruising programme is much more flexible than people think. For instance, with its base in Mallorca, the YachtQuarters Princess 68 already has the wonderful attractions of Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca directly on its doorstep. But with a contract that allows you to go anywhere in the western Med, there are a whole range of additional opportunities, as Josh explains: “You could bolt two of your weeks together and spend 10 days in the south of France, with a two-day passage at each end. We could also speak to the owners with time slots on either side of yours and ask if they want to share the costs and go even further afield.” This approach is what Josh calls “maximum experience for minimum input” and it extends to the finer details of the itinerary too. For instance, if you don’t know what to do with your week, you can simply let the YachtQuarters team tailor it on your behalf. “We can arrange the cars to pick you up from the airport,” says Josh. “We can share recommended passage plans and book the restaurants. The Captain’s also got immense knowledge of the local region so his ideas are invaluable. And because your crew will know your preferences intimately, your time on board, as well as ashore, is likely to prove as relaxed and enjoyable as any yachting experience in the world.”

Explore the glittering Balearic Islands

The stunning Balearic Islands, situated off Spain in the Western Mediterranean, offer so much more than beaches and nightlife, and a luxury yacht charter in Mallorca is the best way to discover the four glistening islands with a well-curated itinerary. Starting in Mallorca, the biggest of the Balearic Islands, is a paradise for the rich and famous. The Philippe Starck designed Port Adriano is a must-stop destination to take in the ambience, high-end gastronomy and glitzy designer stores. And if that’s not quite enough, Palma, the island capital, is home to the best boutiques and restaurants. Elsewhere on the island, there are dozens of picturesque fishing villages, secluded caves, and vineyards where you can please your palette, while the more adventurous can cycle Sa Calobra, a 10-kilometre-long trail that winds down the side of a mountain. Sailing east to Menorca, starting at Menorca, the most westerly of the islands, you’ll be greeted by bottle-green coves and shallow turquoise bays at the resorts of Son Bou and Cala en Forcat, both of which offer the perfect family getaway or peaceful escape. The island is also a great destination for snorkelling, and the wealth of traditional family restaurants means there’s no shortage of authentic Mediterranean cuisine. You can also add education to your schedule by visiting the island’s prehistoric ruins. Sail west and you’ll arrive at Ibiza, where you’ll find more great shopping destinations, from designer goods to local curios, and some of the best nightlife on offer anywhere in the world. And if after all that you need to kick back and relax, you can spend a lazy day soaking up the sun, culture and history of the Old Town, or relax on any of the island’s beautiful coves and

beaches. You can get back to nature by venturing north and exploring the hidden caves and thick pine forests, or chill out at the hippy markets of Es Canar and San Carlos. Have you thought about generating an income when you’re not using your yacht? Owning, running and maintaining a luxury yacht can be a costly venture. Offering your yacht for charter can ease the financial burden, plus safeguard its condition, value and maintenance whilst you enjoy the essence of ownership. With the rise in demand for luxury yacht charters across the world, this is an attractive and lucrative option available to yacht owners.

By taking a lot of the expense and stress out of large yacht ownership, we often find that charter yacht owners use their yachts more frequently... Rita Luskovic, Head of Charter at Princess Yacht Charter shares her wisdom… “If you have a well-maintained yacht of 20m or more with a great crew, in a desirable location, with great fit-out and neutral interior design with high-quality bedding, linen, crockery and a fun collection of water toys, then Princess Yacht Charter is perfectly placed to advise you on how to achieve the greatest financial return.”

All charter yachts need to acquire commercial status and be operated as a formal business concern. However, Rita is adamant that there is no reason why a charter yacht owner should feel in any way burdened by such concerns. On the contrary, with a proven charter company and in affiliation with the management company to take care of these issues on the owner’s behalf, the key difference is one of mindset. The owner will need to book the weeks they wish to use their yacht, thus enabling charter guests to book the remaining available weeks.

The positive feedback from guests and retention of charter owners at Princess Yacht Charter is testament to its operations. With offices in London, the Channel Islands, Spain, the Balearics, Portugal, Turkey, Germany and Switzerland, it has access to some of the most exciting destinations in the world and creates uniquely tailored charter itineraries. As a wellestablished company with a formal affiliation to the MYBA (Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association), it provides back-up whenever and wherever it’s required for charter owners and guests alike.

“By taking a lot of the expense and stress out of large yacht ownership, we often find that charter yacht owners use their yachts more frequently – and with significantly more satisfaction than ever before.”
