Dear Princess Owner/Enthusiast Welcome to My Princess the official magazine for Princess Motor Yacht Sales and its dealer partners from around Europe and the Mediterranean. In this edition, we are thrilled to update you on the stunning and much anticipated Princess 30M Yacht, which will be appearing at both the Cannes and Southampton Boat Shows in the Autumn. Also in store for you is a review of the V58 Open – launched in 2015 – journalists from Motorboat and Yachting put her through her paces! It has been a great year for us so far. In spite of some interesting times in the political arena, growth remains strong, and Princess continues to develop new models at a phenomenal rate, offering an exciting range of options for would-be and existing yacht owners. As a company, we are continuing apace with the development of the service aspect of our business. We now have more than 40 employed technical staff across our network, which means we can be even more responsive. We have also introduced a Concierge service for customers, to give them one-to-one care. Within these pages you will find an interesting piece from Simon Birchall, Princess Motor Yacht Sales’ Aftercare Director, Mallorca and an insight into how he is developing our Service division on the island. Don’t forget to keep an eye on our website – where you will soon see quite a few new developments in the World of Princess Motor Yacht Sales. We are now looking forward to the Cannes and Southampton Boat Shows in September. Please do come along and pay us a visit – it is a super opportunity to meet with the whole team.

PRINCESS 30M

What makes a Princess M Class special is an aura of total confidence. A yacht with an impressive presence, powerful performance and contemporary elegance, designed and built to your personal taste and requirements.

PRINCIPAL DIMENSIONS Length overall (incl. pulpit) Beam Draft Displacement approx. Fuel capacity Water capacity (excl. calorifier)

Like the other yachts in the M Class range, the Princess 30 Metre Yacht has the very considerable advantage of Princess expertise. Over 50 years of boat building excellence that combines the attributes of award winning advanced technology with a timeless sense of style. With a resin infused, semi-planing hull, this raised pilothouse yacht delivers considerable volume, a 27 knot top-speed and a range in excess of 1,000 miles. The

impressive flybridge offers complete versatility of layout. There is more than enough space to include a spa bath, sun loungers, two sets of sofas, a full dining area and a bar as well as the twin helm station. In addition, an optional hardtop and retracting sunroof enables the flybridge to be used day or night, in full sun or shade. Additional sea level deck space includes a hydraulic bathing platform adjacent to the garage, large enough for a 4.5 metre tender.

Having the choice of up to five ensuite cabins, including a full beam main deck master suite is rare on a 30 metre yacht. Guest accommodation on the lower deck includes a choice of either three cabins with a full-beam VIP or four double cabins, two of which can automatically convert to twins for complete flexibility. Captain and four crew sleep forward on the lower deck.

PRINCESS V58 OPEN QUITE POSSIBLY THE MOST STUNNING THING TO COME OUT OF THE PLYMOUTH YARD FOR A LONG TIME, THE V58 OPEN LIVES UP TO ITS LOOKS Article courtesy of Motor Boat and Yachting, February 2016

6 | MyPrincess

Princess and Bernard Olesinski seem to be on a winning run at the moment. The S65, tested by Motor Boat and Yachting in December 2015, is probably the sweetest looking sportsbridge on the market, and the new 75 – launched at the London Boat Show in January, – is a beauty. Which brings me on to this, the V58 Open. For me, the V58 Open stands out from an already handsome crowd. It’s long and low and elegant but it’s also arresting with proportions that are close to perfection. Princess usually errs on the side of caution when it comes to design, preferring evolution over revolution, but the V58 treads an ideal line between aggression and elegance. This a boat that draws you in with its appearance then charms the pants off you the moment you step on board. Sure, looks aren’t everything but in the world of the 60ft sportscruiser they’re a good place to start. One reason why the Open looks so good is because of just that – it’s open. Princess hasn’t had to increase the height of the roofline to accommodate cockpit doors, so the charcoal superstructure

can sweep tightly over the cockpit and give the boat a far more hunkered down profile. There is a deck saloon version available, and no doubt it will be popular, but for now we can focus on the party version, the sun-soaked version, the version that is a giant nod to sportscruisers of old. Interestingly the split between sales of the smaller V48 Open and its deck saloon sibling have been split pretty much fifty-fifty, suggesting that the enclosed saloon version of these boats isn’t going to have it all its own way on the sales sheet.

OPEN-AIR LIVING On an open-backed sportscruiser of this size the cockpit is a single gigantic outdoor living area with the added convenience of a pneumatically sealed sliding roof (that is also enormous) and inset with glazing so even if the weather’s poor you still benefit from the natural light. Part and parcel of this more traditional layout is of course the sunpad on the transom which, though well clear of the protection of the hardtop can be doused in shade thanks to an optional electric awning that glides out from within the coaming.

ALL OF THIS ADDS TO THE V58’S FUN IN THE SUN ETHOS; YOU CAN JUST PICTURE IT IN A CYAN BAY

MyPrincess |

7

THE DRIVING POSITION IS MARVELLOUS, MAINLY DUE TO THE PERFECT GEOMETRY BETWEEN THE SEAT, WHEEL AND THROTTLES 8 | MyPrincess

Below the sunpad there is of course space for a tender garage, this one large enough to swallow a Williams, meaning you can keep the hi-lo platform clear or use it to stow additional water toys if you’re happy to carry more weight at the stern. All of this adds to the V58’s fun in the sun ethos; you can just picture it anchored in a cyan bay with the tender swinging gently off the stern and the bathing platform submerged just below the surface of the gin-clear water, adorned with a couple of director’s chairs.

PARTY PALACE And the cockpit, wow! Once you step up from the bathing platform, the sole is completely flat all the way up to the companionway hatch. This makes moving around so safe and easy, as does the large passageway between the table and the wet-bar, which avoids any sort of pinch point. And you are likely to have a fair few people on board because I reckon you could fit the full RCD complement of 14 passengers around the immense cockpit dinette at a single sitting. It might be a bit tight but the point stands, it’s a fantastically spacious seating area opposite an equally expansive wet-bar that is kitted out with a good selection of storage cupboards and the usual goodies like a griddle, toploading cool box, sink and £15,000 worth of (optional) 42in pop-up weatherproof TV. Yes, a pricey option, but a great way to transform the cockpit into an outdoor cinema on a balmy evening.

Forward and to port a curve of seating doubles up as place for crew to sit on passage and somewhere else to sunbathe beneath the open sunroof if the sunpad at the stern is occupied. The helm station opposite has two seats to cater for a navigator, who can control one of the pair of chart plotters, while the skipper concentrates on helming.

WE HAD A DECENT SEA RUNNING DURING THE TRIAL BUT THE V58 BRUSHED THE WAVES AWAY WITH EASE Not that helming the V58 takes much concentration; in fact it couldn’t be much easier or more relaxing to get this boat galloping gamely over the crests. The engine options are simple, both D13s from Volvo Penta in either 900hp guise, as we had on test, or the detuned 800hp versions. Both are fine partners for the V58 with even the smaller engines claimed to be good for around 35 knots flat out, maybe a touch more. The 900s on our boat made mincemeat of getting the V58 out of the hole and into its 30-knot stride. We topped out at just over 36 knots, a strong performance when you consider that Sunseeker’s Predator 57 ran out of puff on the same motors at 34 knots during our sea trial (MBY April 2015). Princess has such a knack of producing beautifully balanced shaftdrive boats and the V58 handles as tidily as any of them. The helm is light and slick lock-to-lock so it’s very easy to get the hull to change direction with the flick of a wrist. We had a decent sea running during the trial and photoshoot but the V58 brushed the waves away with ease, though I did engage a bit of tab to keep the hull cutting cleanly through the crests. We were driving the boat far harder through the rough stuff for the sake of the camera than any owner is likely to do in these conditions, so the boat’s refinement is all the more impressive. As are noise levels, which remain well suppressed despite the open cockpit. No doubt the deck saloon version will be the more relaxing cruiser but the Open is properly smooth and I see nothing wrong with being able to hear the rush of the water off the transom and the odd throb from the exhausts. The driving position is marvellous, mainly due to the perfect geometry between the seat, wheel and throttles that means you can sit right back in the chair with the wheel in one hand and the throttles comfortably beneath the other with an excellent view out at all times. The dash looks and feels classy and it’s great to have so many little cubbies to chuck a phone or a pair of sunglasses.

CATERING FOR ALL For such a cockpit-orientated boat, the interior doesn’t feel like the poor relation in the slightest. It’s spacious, well designed and beautifully finished, even by Princess’s elevated standards. The galley is endowed with a full-height

MyPrincess |

9

Plenty of seating around the dinette and the big teak table raises/lowers electronically

fridge-freezer and a handy return that not only means you can wedge yourself in when the boat is moving but also creates an ad hoc breakfast bar to serve the dinette opposite. The dinette, though compact, does its job well enough, which is to cater for quick breakfasts and cosy nightcaps if the conditions don’t suit living on deck. Enter the full-beam master cabin and the first thing that strikes you is how low in the hull this cabin is. This makes for plenty of headroom – on the port hand side of the cabin, at least – and genuine waterline views from the bed thanks to the pair of one-piece hull windows. The person sleeping on the starboard side of the bed will have to duck their head to get in but you can at least sit up comfortably and read before going to sleep. The ensuite is a bit of a step up from the cabin floor but once in there the level of finish and detailing is sublime, plus there is a good amount of natural light and a separate shower cubicle

with a solid door. The guest bathroom forward, which is ensuite to the VIP cabin and a short trip across the saloon from the bunk cabin, is given more space than that of the master and also acts as the day heads thanks to an access door straight from the saloon. The VIP cabin is endowed with plenty of headroom and loads of natural light due to the long strip of glazing overhead and the elongated ‘knife’ window that Princess is rolling out across the range. As an optional extra you can have scissor-action berths in this cabin to add some versatility. The third bunk bed cabin is ideally suited to kids, as the bunks are quite close to each other and the ladder up to the top bunk restricts access to the bottom one. That said, it does get a large window with two opening ports inset, its own flatscreen television and a hanging cupboard, so adults will be comfortable enough for a short stay.

Long strip of glazing in the foredeck makes for a very bright VIP cabin

The optional scissor-action berths add to the VIP cabin’s versatility

VERDICT This is an incredibly difficult boat to level any criticism at because for what it is – a big, powerful, sexy sportscruiser – it doesn’t really put a foot wrong. The third cabin is a bit pokey, yes, but straws are being clutched at there. If you want a more spacious saloon that sits on the main deck with great views out and doors to shut out the cold and any evidence of the engines running then hold out for the deck saloon version – the Open is doing its own thing. With the rise of the deck saloon sportscruiser and its best of both worlds configuration, it had looked like the days of the open-backed sportscruiser were numbered. But as sales of the V48 Open have shown, there is still plenty of life left in this more traditional style of sportscruiser. And though the deck saloon variant of the V58 will be more usable and a better year-round

option if you plan to keep the boat on our shores, there is just something about the V58 Open that really gets under your skin. It might be its unwavering focus on delivering a sociable main deck that wants nothing more than to be packed with people enjoying themselves as the sun beats down. It could be the nostalgic sensation of helming a 60ft sportscruiser that actually feels like you are out on the water rather than insulated from it. Or it might just be that this is a Princess product that drips with finesse and practical ingenuity but also makes your heart skip a beat whenever you look at it. It has the want factor, not just because of how it hangs together but because it grabs your attention and refuses to let go. For more information visit www.princess.co.uk

OWNER’S STORY

BILL TAYLOR

Princess 56 - St Katharine Docks, London

PRINCESS 56

Bill Taylor’s interest in boating was sparked in 1972, aged just 25, whilst on holiday. Relaxing with his young family on the blue flag beaches that run from Bournemouth to Sandbanks and watching the boats coming out of Poole Harbour, Bill made his mind up that one day he would have a boat. In 1980, he purchased his first boat, a twenty three foot sailing boat. As the family grew, so did the boat, owning classic models from within the Princess range in the Princess 33 and 35, as well as a Trader 42 trawler yacht, before moving into Flybridge models from Fairline. His last Fairline was a Fairline Squadron 55. Following the opening of the new office in May 2015, Princess Poole had just taken delivery of a brand new Princess 56 Flybridge Motor Yacht for display at the Poole Harbour Boat Show. Bill continues.... ”I stay on board my boat most weekends enjoying spending time together with the family on the water. I was looking for a boat that would provide more space and comfort for us all without going too big but

that I could also use to entertain clients”. Bill jumped into his helicopter and in just over one hour landed in Poole. Although a similar size to his current boat, Bill couldn’t believe how much extra space the Princess 56 offered in both the daytime living areas and the accommodation. “The large saloon windows and master cabin hull glazing just gave such a feeling of space and being on a much larger boat. Also, I was really impressed with the detailing and build quality which seemed to be of a much higher standard than my previous boats”. Bill took delivery of his new Princess 56 in July. Having spent most of the past thirty years on the River Crouch cruising the Thames Estuary and the East Coast, Bill’s current berth is in St. Katharine Docks, by Tower Bridge in the heart of the City of London. Bill adds “I am very pleased with my new Princess 56 and being just one foot longer that my previous boat yet offering so much more space, the mooring fees are the almost the same!”

“I was really impressed with the detailing and build quality which seemed to be of a much higher standard than my previous boats”

TECH TALK

SAFETY TOP 10 WITH CHRIS BAILEY

B

oating is the ultimate escape from the stresses and responsibilities of the real world. A haven of carefree fun and relaxation. But ‘carefree’ should never be confused with ‘careless’. We all have a duty of care toward our guests on board, be they family, friends or crew. Indeed, beyond forty five feet waterline length (which in Princess terminology equates to the Princess 52 and above) there is a statutory requirement laid down by the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) regarding the safety equipment that should be aboard. (And irrespective of size, it is always worth consulting your insurance company to be sure that you are compliant with its safety requirements). Preparing for the worst case scenario isn’t just about making sure that you’re best equipped to deal with whatever emergency may beset you and your crew, it’s also about simply providing peace of mind for everyone on board, allowing them to be confident in the knowledge that - whilst it is extremely unlikely to occur - any emergency situation can be dealt with effectively. Princess Motor Yacht Sales has long partnered Ocean Safety to supply and equip customer’s vessels not only to MCA or insurance stipulations, but also tailored to precise client needs. Falling, as it does, under the remit of RetroFit Sales Manager Chris Bailey, we asked him to give us his Top Ten recommendations and tips for on-board safety equipment. Whilst far from an exhaustive list, these are a few of the items that should certainly be considered.

20 | MyPrincess

LIFERAFT For a ‘worst case’ situation of abandoning ship, equipping your yacht isn’t simply a matter of totting up the number of crew and buying the cheapest raft of appropriate capacity. Princess yachts are designed with liferaft stowage in mind, so often a specific type and style will provide the most effective installation and deployment. Dedicated cradles provide perfect stowage solutions and hydrostatic releases ensure that life rafts will deploy automatically even in the most severe of circumstance.

LIFEJACKETS Princess offer two versions of the adult lifejacket, a standard auto-inflation unit designed to fulfil all emergency requirements and a premium version designed to be even more comfortable for longer periods of wear on board. But with younger family members in mind, Princess offers a full range of children’s lifejackets, from new born babies through to teenagers.

PERSONAL LOCATORS Personal locators fall into two categories. The AIS personal locator - ideal for night passages or rough weather trips - is designed to be worn inside a lifejacket and activates automatically upon inflation. It sends a ‘squawk’ to nearby DSC equipped VHF radios and uses AIS (Automatic Identification System) to immediately place accurate positioning information onto the vessel’s chart plotter, plus the

distance and bearing of the person in the water. By contrast, the personal EPIRB uses a dedicated satellite system and in-built homing beacon to first alert relevant authorities to a distress situation and then guide the rescuers precisely to the target. Only for use in dire emergencies, it offers one of the quickest and most accurate methods of summoning outside help.

FLARES A flare kit appropriate to your cruising grounds is essential. Normal pyrotechnic flares include rocket flares with an ejection height of 350 metres through to smoke flares that burn for sixty seconds releasing high visibility orange smoke to highlight your location. But new onto the market are high intensity LED flares. Safe, lightweight and waterproof, the key advantage to LED flares is that they will ‘burn’ for over five hours with a visible range of up to seven miles.

FIRST AID KIT

HAND-HELD VHF Not only a back-up to the yacht’s main VHF radio in the event of failure, a hand-held radio adds portability - allowing two way communication from anywhere aboard ship, and can also offer useful ship to tender communication.

FLARES

MEDICAL FIRST AID KIT Naturally no yacht should ever be without a suitable first aid kit, but how about a smaller compact unit for the tender? The best medical kit in the world is of little use if you’re two miles away on a beach when someone falls victim to a slippery rock or needs quick attention for a sting or bite.

GRAB BAG

FIRE BLANKET Not just an essential in the galley for pan fires, fire blankets are also often the most effective way of dealing with a person on fire, perhaps from an ignited fuel spill when refuelling a jetski or RIB for example. LIFEJACKET

DEFIBRILLATOR Although not the most obvious item of emergency equipment, the latest versions of this life-saving equipment are excellent, featuring spoken voice instructions to assist even the most inexperienced in coping with a life threatening situation. Standby batteries typically last four years and the equipment will function for up to four hours of treatment.

GRAB BAG In the heat of the moment the last thing you need is to be scratching around trying to find everything. A waterproof grab bag keeps all the essentials together and safe, ready to go. But it’s not just for obvious items like flares and an EPIRB. Consider keeping passports, spare glasses and medication in it as well.

BUCKET AND TORCH The subject of safety equipment always tends to focus around recognised items like lifejackets and flares. But on a more fundamental level, there’s much to be said for a good old bucket and a powerful waterproof floating torch. The former comes in handy for everything from tender bailing to the dreaded mal de mar, the latter essential for pretty much any night-time emergency situation and very handy after dark the rest of the time.

RYBROOK BRISTOL IS NOW OPEN Work started in October on the new facility –which serves customers from an area of more than 12,000 square miles from Lands End, through Wales and up to the Cotswolds.

Parking for over 40 cars and a single customer entrance and lobby area giving access to the building, a customer lounge and car handover area are all part of the facility. As well as the four luxury franchises on the ground floor, the first floor houses a Rybrook Specialist Cars showroom. A ten-bay workshop, meanwhile, serves all four brands. Henry Whale, managing director of Rybrook, said: “I am extremely proud to announce the opening of our ultra-premium retail showroom in Bristol this summer. To have four brands of such extraordinary calibre together in this enviable facility is an exciting prospect.”

“The establishment of Rybrook in Bristol demonstrates our desire to expand the business in the ultrapremium automotive segment and we continue to seek opportunities in the right place with the right partners.” The growth of Rybrook’s relationship with its existing franchise partners and the welcome addition of Lamborghini, strengthens the Group’s position in the ultra-premium segment. The launch of the new Bristol showroom will create 46 new jobs and Rybrook is currently seeking candidates, for a variety of roles, whose top priority is delivering exceptional customer standards.

AFTERSALES

Interview: Simon Birchall,

Aftersales Director, Mallorca ‘Right first time’ is the mantra of Princess Motor Yacht Sales Aftersales Director for Mallorca, Simon Birchall. Brought in to revolutionise the marine aftersales experience, Simon comes with an impeccable history. Twenty six years in the demanding world of prestige automotive customer care, all with BMW, saw Simon rise from Apprentice to Aftersales Manager. His last seven years were with the Rybrook Group, parent company of PMYS, where he scooped the prestigious World Aftersales Dealer of the Year award, beating every other BMW dealership across the globe. It’s against this backdrop that Simon is building a world class aftersales experience for Princess Motor Yacht Sales’ customer base. Based in Mallorca and covering the Mediterranean, Simon has been in the post for a year now, and the changes are coming thick and fast. “When I started, we had five engineers on the island” says Simon, “now we have fifteen”. From creating

24 | MyPrincess

dedicated training programmes, to ensuring that every engineer is fully equipped to tackle every job, that ‘right first time’ mantra starts and ends right here - the logic being that each engineer visits the boat just once, minimising downtime and aggravation for the owner and improving efficiency for Princess Motor Yacht Sales. “By using our own highly skilled engineers rather than contracting out, we completely control quality standards, rather than being at the mercy of sub contractors” explains Simon. “We only employ quality people that completely understand our way of working; that way we can guarantee customer satisfaction”. The result is a phenomenally powerful aftersales facility, but as the saying has it, power is nothing without control, and here’s

where it gets even more impressive. Simon has developed and installed a customer concierge service. A team of three provide a direct personal link for every Princess customer, ready to handle every issue, not just faults. Customers are allocated one of the team as their personal point of call every time so that a strong and trusted working relationship can be established. Want to book an engine service? Call your concierge. Want advice regarding a trip, or berthing arranged for when you reach your destination? Call your concierge. Blocked shower drain, marina recommendations, even someone to take care of the laundry or to put fresh flowers on board - your personal concierge is just a phone call away. From the customer’s point of view, the result is transformative. No longer do you need to spend time hunting for a suitable contractor, trying to orchestrate access or dealing with third parties that over promise and under deliver. One phone call to a known and trusted contact with whom you have an ongoing relationship with and the problem is solved - and it’s solved right first time.

“IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE WHETHER YOUR YACHT IS ONE DAY OLD OR TEN YEARS OLD” SIMON ASSURES ME, “…THE LEVEL OF SERVICE AND QUALITY OF WORK IS ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL”. It’s a win/win for all concerned. Customers benefit from a completely hassle-free interface, minimum downtime and a consistently very high standard of workmanship, while Princess Motor Yacht Sales reaps the efficiency gains whilst claiming another industry first; not to mention the benefit of satisfied customers who are unlikely to want to lose that level of support and convenience when the time comes to upgrade their yacht. It’s a completely fresh approach, interlacing the effectiveness and high standards of the prestige motor industry with the close contact and personalised approach of the yacht market. It has required a visionary outlook and plenty of blue sky thinking, but Simon Birchall has got it right first time.
