Greetings, Pacific Northwest District Key Clubbers! The end of the year is here! It’s so bittersweet to think that there is such a short amount of time left in our terms. While my Key Club journey comes to an end, I am taking the time to reflect on the last four years I’ve spent in this organization. Whether you’re starting your first term as a club officer or graduating high school, I encourage each of you to think about some of your favorite Key Club moments so far. I am so excited to continue watching the growth of the organization as an alumni. We’re bound to do great things. As you all are aware by now, this year’s District Convention was cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Although it’s a very unfortunate situation and I’m heartbroken that we cannot provide our members with their well-earned convention experience, I’d like to spend the remainder of this update covering a few of the cancellation logistics as they apply to your clubs. As stated in previous emails, we are not able to comment on the exact amount each club will receive at this time. We are working with our partners at Travel Portland, the Oregon Convention Center, and each hotel to ensure clubs will be able to receive a partial refund. More information will be released as it becomes available, so please avoid individually contacting District Administrator Brian Egger or the DCON registration email with refund-related questions. Elections for District Executive Officers will be held via webinar meeting this year. PNW Key Club does not have the software necessary to facilitate a meeting that can accomodate for over 300 club delegates. For that reason, the 2019-2020 District Board will serve as the voting body in this election. The webinar will take place on Sunday, March 15th and results will be announced by email and social media shortly afterward. As you recall, awards are presented to clubs during the Closing Session on Saturday night. Most award recipients were determined at the Winter Board meeting by outgoing lieutenant governors and members of the Kiwanis Committee. Award recipients will be listed in the March 17th Biweekly Update. Awards will be mailed to the attention of each club's faculty advisor. PNW Kiwanis Foundation Scholarship

recipients should be notified by the Foundation itself. Additionally, all contests that require auditions will be canceled. This includes the Community Initiative, Oratorical, and Talent contests. Clubs that wish to submit a scrapbook (traditional or non-traditional) must mail them to the District Office at 1024 Marine Drive, Astoria, OR 97103. These must be postmarked by Thursday, March 19th. I recommend that your club sends these using a tracking number. And lastly, at this time, lieutenant governors should expect to receive their division’s Thirst Project merchandise orders at Spring Board. Further updates will be provided as they become available. Thank you all for your patience and understanding during this time. It is unprecedented for any Key Club district to cancel their convention. We did not take this decision lightly and I promise to provide as much of the convention experience as I can through alternate formats like this newsletter. I have had an amazing year serving the Pacific Northwest District and would not have given up this experience for anything else. I would like to send out a HUGE thank you to all of you for making this year so memorable. Your constant dedication, energy, and motivation for service inspires me daily and I am so honored to have served each and every one of you. On that note, I am proud to say that from March 2019 to January 2020, the Pacific Northwest District of Key Club International has completed a whopping 59,629 hours of service according to our Secretary Reports. You have all worked so incredibly hard this year and I am unbelievably proud to see how unique, efficient, and generous our District is! This experience has truly changed my life and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for us all. Once again, thank you ALL for everything you do!

What’s poppin, PNW? On March 9th, 2019, I was elected alongside my fellow executives at District Convention. I can still vividly remember the exhilaration of running from room to room to caucus, and the surrealness I felt during the closing session when my outtie handed down the editor pin. From stressing over the creation of my first ESPRESSO to bonding with the District Board during board meetings, this year has been nothing short of incredible. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your District Editor - it has been an absolute honor. Although our retirement and the end of this Key Club year may not be traditional, I know that PNW Key Club won’t let an unfortunate circumstance change our passion for service and mindset of growth. Thank you once again, and I hope you enjoy the final edition of THE ESPRESSO.
Speaking of summer, it is not uncommon for Key Clubs to get into a funk as the school year ends and attendance dwindles. It is never too late to turn things around by focusing on club achievements, creating positive social media posts that encourage non-members to see what your club is all about, and attending the 2020 Key Club International Convention in San Francisco, California, June 30-July 5. I would also encourage clubs to consider inviting their new lieutenant governor to a meeting so they can bond with members before summer begins. As the old saying goes, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” The Kiwanis Key Club Committee is already working with the incoming lieutenant governors to ensure they provide you the kind of support you deserve. It is hard to believe another year of Key Club service is coming to an end, and a new year is about to begin. I want to personally thank all of the members, officers, and advisors that helped make the 2019-2020 service year a successful one. For example, we raised more than $30,000 for the Thirst Project. In addition, despite not being able to hold DCON because of COVID-19, we still welcomed 4 new Key Clubs to the PNW which will result in more hands for service. Finally, 6 Key Clubs received service grants through the Pacific Northwest Opportunities Fund (PNWOF) that totaled $4,434. If you missed the opportunity to

Hello PNW! I hope as we are wrapping up the year you are all feeling satisfied with your terms as officers or year as a member. I know at this time it can be difficult to stay focused as we are ending a year and getting things in line for the next, however, please take into account that we still have about 15 clubs that are still not dues paid. As it has passed February 1st, these clubs are now suspended, to ensure that your club does not have to face an $100 reactivation fee in the fall, please submit dues for at least one member in your club. To gain assistance with this process, please email memberservices@kiwanis.org or me at treasurer@pnwkeyclub.org. Additionally, if you have currently paid dues but have any questions or are receiving calls or emails claiming you have not, please email me. Thank you all for your continuous effort and communication! With all of that being said, this year has made me believe the people who say a year goes by in the blink of an eye. This has been one of the most challenging years I have faced and it has encased so much personal growth. The days of the journey went slow but the year concluded so quickly. I am so thankful to Key Club for showing me that when you put effort into things you are passionate about they give back to you. Being treasurer of the Pacific Northwest District will be an experience I reference and appreciate for the rest of my life. To this year: thank you for giving me my best friends, the most hardworking district, and people I will call family for the rest of my life. Please remember to celebrate all you have accomplished this year, whether that be as an officer or member. Also, do not forget to thank all of the adults, Kiwanians and teachers who make Key Club possible and successful for us all.
ACTIVE: If your club has successfully paid its dues by December 1st, your club has an active status. Clubs that paid by November 1st, have received an early bird patch. SUSPENDED: If your club has not yet paid its dues, it is currently suspended. Once suspended, clubs cannot use the Membership Update Center. They must create a roster and submit dues to Kiwanis International. INACTIVE: If a club has not paid its dues by February 1st, and does not pay by October 1st of the following year, the club will become inactive. This means the club will no longer receive any resources from the Key Club International Office. To become active again, the club must complete and submit the “Petition for Reactivation Form� along with the US $100 reactivation fee and membership for at least 15 members.

Kiwanis-Family Relations The Kiwanis-Family relations committee has been hard at work continuing supporting collaborative relationships for Key Clubbers and the other branches of the Kiwanis Family. Recently, we published the Builders Club curriculum, which consists of 24 slideshows that include lessons, activities, fundraisers, and service projects for middle schoolers to partake in. Also, our committee has produced the Builders Club Toolkit to go with the slideshows. This toolkit highlights the reasons to join Builders Club, how to use the curriculum slides, example service projects, and more. Please utilize the curriculum and the toolkit to mentor neighboring Builders Clubs and help them develop the next generation of Key Clubbers. March marks the end of the Key Club year, and the time that transitions take place. There will be new officers and members; however, for some, this marks the end of their Key Club journey. To all the seniors, thank you for your service to your club, division, and this district. As you take the next step in life, consider continuing your journey with the Kiwanis-Family by joining Circle K, the collegiate level of the Kiwanis-Family. There are over 13,000 members internationally and 16 clubs in the Pacific Northwest alone. You can carry on your passion for service at a school with an existing Circle K or charter your own. Helloooo Pacific Northwest! My name is Irin Shim and I hold the immense honor of serving as your Key Club International Trustee for the 2019-2020 service year. I am so honored to have been able to share this past term’s PNW experience with you all and to have been able to work with one of the brightest, most passionate, talented, and service oriented executives in International. Katie, Georgia, Alicen, Justin‌ Thank you for going on this wild ride with me! You have left big shoes to fill! On that note, I encourage you to giddy up into the new term with me and make every moment of your Key Club experience count. I encourage you to actively attend events and learn something new everyday. I encourage you to make new friendships with fellow key clubbers, reach out to your advisors and local Circle K, and engage with your community to learn first hand how to better serve your homes, schools, and communities. Take all this new knowledge and apply it to every aspect of your lofe and continue to share your experiences with others and enlarge the Kiwanis Family. After all, service truly is the gift that keeps on giving. So, these next few months of the transition period, I challenge you to break out of your comfort zones, share your experiences, and serve like there is no tomorrow. Division 26 February DCM Emmy Ngo, Lieutentant Governor of Division 26
On February 28th, clubs located in Seattle gathered together for Division 26’s DCM located at Seattle University in partnership with their CKI chapter as well as the University of Washington’s CKI. With this Kiwanis-Family event, members were able to bond with each other and get to know the college students during a fun filled scavenger hunt with various challenges and activities. This included educating members through social media posts about the Thirst Project, to silly things like creating a Tik Tok together. The CKI members were open to sharing their college and Circle K experiences with Key Clubbers. It was a great way to get current seniors thinking about alumni programs and Circle K clubs near them for their collegiate journey. While the scavenger hunt came to an end with members getting food (sponsored by West Seattle Kiwanis), they were able to turn their attention towards a Thirst Project Road Warrior named Estefano. Estefano came across the country from Florida to spread awareness and educate youth on the water crisis and how Thirst Project has taken action to end this world scarcity. Through an educational video and demonstration of the weight of a jerrycan, it was apparent this left a mark on our members and that they’ll take all information and awareness back to their respective clubs. Adjourning with a group photo, the event provided many bonding experiences for all clubs present, and we are so excited to see everyone back at the next event. Thank you to all the Unicorns that made it out that night!
Division 82 Polar Plunge
Kaitlyn Kim, Lieutentant Governor of Division 82 In the 2020 Polar Plunge, there were 24 teams including local police and firefighters who gathered to donate to Special Olympics Oregon. The event occurred on February 15th at the Rogue Valley Country Club. The Ashland High School Key Club donated $700 to the Southern Oregon Special Olympics with 14 Key Clubbers being sponsored for $50 each by Ashland Kiwanis. Each Key Clubber volunteered to partake in the Plunge by jumping into 46 degree water and raising money to benefit Special Olympics athletes.
