We asked each of our children to share their POA story. Maddison: I am 11 years old and have been showing POAs since I was 3. I have shown 5 POAs so far in my career. I started with JBJ’s Totally Macho, who was the POA stallion my mom used to show. Then I moved to Sheza Cool Color, who my Aunt Kimmie showed. My mom, Grandma Debbie, and Aunt Kimmie decided it was time for my own POA, so Aunt Kimmie contacted the Gallagher family to see what they were going to do with The Crisco Kid after Sammi graduated. They decided to sell him that spring and he became mine. We showed in leadline, walk trot, and showmanship that year. We even won Leadline Costume at the International. The following year I showed Crisco in all the walk trot classes and even started cantering. My last year in 8 and under, I showed Miss Coppertone and won walk trot English pleasure at the International. It was decided that I needed a new pony for 9-12, so Aunt Kimmie searched again and found Perpetually Tipped (Reese) who the Hunter family was selling. I didn’t even know anything about it. We came home from our Disney vacation and found him in our barn. I wasn’t quite ready for Reese that spring, so I showed Crisco in all the main 9-12 classes and used Reese for showmanship and trotted through the gaming classes. This year; however, I showed Reese in everything and we placed in a couple classes at the Congress. I did also show Crisco at the Congress in Native American Costume in which we were Reserve Champion and in the 9-12 Girls Western Pleasure Class in which we placed 3rd. Carter: I am 9 years and officially retired from showing POAs. I showed leadline on The Crisco Kid and had fun but didn’t want to show anymore after my mom couldn’t help me. I still go out and help once in a while in the barn, but I would rather ride my bike or play video games. I did win Leadline Costume and Leadline Equitation at the International my last year I showed. I still like to go the POA shows to see my friends and just hang out. Carson: I am 7 years old and and started out showing leadline on LDT Mister Mojo who is still my favorite POA. My Aunt Kimmie used to be my leader with Mojo and then my mom became my leader when I moved onto Crisco. Next year, I will be showing Crisco in the 8 and under classes. I might start cantering, although my mom said, “we’ll see, let’s make sure we can trot all the way around the arena first”. I was very happy to win both Leadline Costume and Leadline Equitation at the Congress this year. I also was Res. Congress Champion in English and Western Walk-Trot Boys 8 and under. As for our ponies, we have two great ones in our barn. The Crisco Kid is just an amazing pony that really knows what he needs to do. Although he can be frustrating at times, he truly has taken care of each one of the kids and we all love him dearly. Perpetually Tipped is the other great pony we own. He and Maddie really came together at the end of the season and we are looking forward to next year. We are also very proud of our children. It is always fun at the shows seeing friends and hanging out, but not always so much fun at home doing chores and practicing. They do both pretty well. We just want to say special thank you to our family: The Haas’, Chestnuts, Clarks, and Bunns for all the help and support this season. A special thank you to the Vartorella family for the use of the Native American costume the past several years. Our family wishes your family a very blessed holiday season and a successful 2014.

How Can I Compete in the 2015 Select Sire Futurity Classes?

JOYSE BANISTER Chief Executive Off icer 3828 South Emerson Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46203 317-788-0107 officemanager@poac.org

This time of year, I begin to get calls asking “how can I participate in the Select Sire Futurity and how do I buy a stallion?” I have often joked with my staff that we need a “POAC Futurity Book for Dummies” because I could refer to it also when calls come in! The futurities can be really confusing to the seasoned POA owner, not to mention the new owner. For this reason, I am going to try to list some Futurity Facts to try to make it understandable to the common horse owner… • If you have a broodmare and want to breed to a stallion that will have a resulting foal that is eligible to be in the Select Sire Futurity, from now until February 1, 2014 is the time you can bid on the stallion of your choice from the published 2015 Select Sire Futurity Stallion List. Bid forms are in the POA Magazine and on the website. • If you choose to send in a bid, you must a pay minimum of half the advertised breeding fee on this list, or $200 if it is listed as Private Treaty. The higher you bid, the more likely you will have the winning bid. All bids are opened after February 5, 2014, and the bidders are notified that they have either been successful in purchasing the stallion, or they receive their bid check back with a letter that someone outbid them for the stallion breeding. • After you receive your above letter, if you won the stallion bid, then you are responsible for contacting the stallion owner and making arrangements for the breeding of your mare. All arrangements are strictly between the mare and stallion owners. • If you did not successfully purchase a breeding, you can purchase any available stallion that was not purchased during the bidding phase by sending a check to the POAC for the minimum bid of $200, or half of the advertised breeding fee if more than $400. You can purchase a stallion until July 31, 2014, and still have a resulting foal be SSF eligible for 2015. • You can also breed your mare to one of the stallions that had been purchased by someone else and the resulting foal will be SSF eligible, but you would have to contact the stallion owner directly to see if they are willing to breed your mare, and you will be subject to whatever breeding fee they choose to charge you. • After July 31, 2014 any stallion that has not been purchased is not eligible to produce a foal for the 2015 Select Sire Futurity class. • After breeding your mare to a SSF Stallion, your next step is to make sure you nominate the mare by December 1, 2014, while she is still in foal. You can nominate her after the foal is born, but you will pay much higher nomination fees. Forms for this are on the POA Website and also in the POA Magazine. • The next payment due is the sustaining payment in June 2015 for the mare, and finally a payment in September 2015 for the foal. In September, you will also pay the foal’s entry fees to the Select Sire Futurity including stall, class fees, office fees, drug testing fees, and any tack stall or bedding fees. • You are now ready to show in the 2015 Select Sire Futurity Colts or Fillies class!!! Your foal is also now eligible to receive incentive monies if it shows in the fall futurities as a yearling, two-year-old, three-year-old, or four-year-old because its mom was nominated to the 2015 Select Sire Futurity. Even if the foal does not show in the SSF class, it remains eligible for incentive money because of the mare nomination. I hope this helps you understand how this Select Sire Program works…it is a great program but the process can be quite intimidating for the new participant! Good Luck to all the stallion owners as well as mare owners for 2014!!! Until next month, hug your kids and your ponies!!!

Abby Kelts

Annie Wallace (12) and her POA “Tees Sassafras T” and other kids in her USPC club recently met with a professional Reining trainer, Justin Henderson, that instructed the kids on how to work on a small circle to engage & control the different parts of the horse’s body under saddle. She thought this was very neat, fun and educational. Her volleyball and soccer tournaments had to be rescheduled due to our early-October winter snow storm recently. Her volleyball team ended up being the winning team for their district when the tournament finally happened. Speaking of the bad weather we’ve had this fall… we did have a fatality due the big flood in September. Robbie Alexander (3) lost his pony Snow White due to colic and toxemia from the stress of the flood. With the help of some friends, Snow White was moved from her flooded field to a dry stall, but still got sick. His vet recommended she go to Colorado State University vet school for treatment, but all the roads were closed. Robbie’s mom spent all night nursing her back to health from toxemia, only to have her colic. They even had a really hard time with burying her due to the flood. This was all devastating to the Alexander family. Joanna Rufino, came to the rescue. She went on the POA breeders’ facebook page and found people willing to donate a safe pony for Robbie. She got 5 responses! Alison Esler, of Kentucky donated Flame n Fandango (Fannie) a 14 year old POA mare. Doreen Poteet donated Fannie’s ride to Iowa. The POA board donated money for a stall and shavings for the week in Iowa. Joanna donated Fannie’s ride to her new home in Colorado. For those of you who attended the sale, you may have heard this part of the story before. Thanks to all of you who donated money for Robbie to have some new tack for Fannie. She is enjoying her new life with Molly and the Alexander’s gelding. Robbie and Fannie, with Joanna holding the lead, are our picture this month.

December Youth News

Bryce Carns

These past few months have gone by fast. I had so much fun showing with all our POA friends. At the shows I showed Tributes Impulsive Chex and our two newest additions to the Carns showing barn is Impulses Foxy Lady (aka Charlie) and Impulses Gold Catina (aka Kat). Charlie and I went down to the Reichert Celebration and did very well. We won the 2 and 3 year old western pleasure futurity, reserve in junior western pleasure and reserve 2 and 3 year old hunter under saddle futurity. With Impulses Gold Catina I won 1318 hunter under saddle and reserve junior hunter saddle. At the Reichert I signed up for trainer for a day. My trainer was David Archer. David and his wife Courtney were great to work with. I learned so many things from them. It was truly an opportunity of a life time. I hope everyone had a great year and can’t wait to see everyone next year.

Shelbi Radig

My name is Shelbi Radig and I’m sixteen years old and I live in Omro, Wisconsin and proud of it! I go to Omro High School, and I’m a sophomore. I own two ponies; their names are Flowers in Heaven (Flo) and J-N Myte Vista Gold (Vista). I ride Jazz It Up N Heaven (Jazz It) in the speed classes but am training Vista to do them too. He’s fast if you put his mind to it. This year at fair I took Jazz It, because Vista turned up lame, and we won all of our speed classes and halter classes. We also did the Equestrian Team for my school and we rocked that too. I’ve been in the P.O.A. circuit for about six years now. I’ve learned a lot about horses and ponies since I got mine and joined this club. The best part about the P.O.A.’s is all the color and that everyone is so friendly. This year has been the best, I hope this next year will be even better! Hope to see all you guys next year!!

Emma Bougie

Hi my name is Emma Bougie. I turned 15 this October. I have been involved with POA’s since I was 5. I live in Osceola, Wisconsin with my 3 brothers and mom and dad. My current pony is named Impressive Bobbie Sox. We call her Bobbie. She is young and still learning, but we have fun. The kids in the Wisconsin club are a great bunch and even better riders. We had a great time in Des Moines, IA at the sale. I got to ride the ponies into the sale ring. I also had a great time with friends and also got to meet new friends. Speaking of friends; over the summer my good friend Bryce Carns and her family worked very hard to teach me and my pony the art of Hunt Seat and Showmanship. I really like it a lot and had a super good time. I had fun swimming, watching baseball, and attended my first concert. What a great time I had see Daughtry with my best friend. Thank you Bryce, Barron, Autumn, Jan and Dan you have all made my summer special. I have to tell you about my special Aunt Elizabeth (aka Bitty) who took over the show season when grandpa was not able to continue due to an accident. She stepped up to the challenge (sometimes with 3 teenagers) and we made many good memories. It took a lot of work and organization to get us all down the road and to our classes on time. Thank you and love you today and always. I am looking forward to continuing to grow in the show ring, meet new people and have new adventures. I have added POA Queen to my bucket list and l am looking forward to representing the POA club now and in the future. POA December 2013 - Page 39

HIS SUDDEN ANGEL, 3-year-old daughter of Suddenly A Sonny, ApHC, sire of many POA halter and performance ponies, and out of Touched by An Angel. This filly was born chestnut shoncap and is now white with small red and black spots. My other filly is HIS FANCY FREE, who is by Santee Sheik, first place weanling in the Select Sire Futurity, sired by His Fancy Carbine, who is out of the best 56” ApHC mare ever offered in a POA breeding program. FANCY’s dam is Santee Penny, who is also sired by His Fancy Carbine, which makes her a double-bred His Fancy Feather. This filly is a very shiney, dark chocolate roan with snowflakes and a stripe, and is a 2-year-old. Both fillies have gorgeous heads and necks, are sound of wind, limb and eye, and are gentle.
