Dear Traveler: Fall! The fruit trees of spring blossom in the Argentine and Chilean Lake District . . . the beer flows in Munich . . . the foliage dazzles in Vermont . . . music reaches its yearly crescendo in Vienna . . . the rainy season ends in Southeast Asia. It is a fine time to travel.
jewelry and fabrics, its interesting cooking (the best soups in Europe in my book)—all indelible. If you have not been to Poland, let us and our gifted agents at Mazurkas turn it on for you. If you have been, I’m guessing you’ll want to go back. It is a magnet for me.
We will be highlighting Poland in this issue, and no country has given me more indelible experiences in the dozen or so trips I have made there, starting in the most gelid days of the Cold War and ending recently in its truly explosive creativity. I try to encapsulate my thoughts . . . Here is perfect Krakow with arguably the most beautiful city square on earth and a castle so grand that almost every other castle pales in comparison. Here are the results of the nation’s world preeminence in restoration: Warsaw’s Old Town Square, the inner city of Gdansk, the bridges and late gothic glory of Wroclaw, all restored from literal ashes and ruins. Here is my candidate for the most perfect Renaissance-era town in Europe: Zamosc and the twin-cathedral glories of Torun. Poland still has that delicious sense of discovery about it. My favorite place is probably the ugliest city in Europe, the industrial revolution city of Lodz (pronounced “woodge”—yes, buy the Berlitz English-Polish phrasebook when you go!), with its industrial tycoon villas, its intellectual grit, its gifts to the world from Arthur Rubinstein to Roman Polanski. Lodz, I admit, is an acquired taste, but I can think of few places where your welcome will be more genuine and where evocations of those horrible war days will be more riveting. (The Uprising Museum in Warsaw is the best such place on planet earth; the new, cutting-edge Jewish Museum is stunning; and the enormous, somewhat derelict Jewish Cemetery feels like a vast elephants’ graveyard where I dare the mind to be in repose.) Polish design, particularly in the graphic arts (the most creative poster art on earth), its
Pleasure travel has changed more in the last decade than it has in the past couple hundred years. The tourist hordes (and they are very often made up of Mainland Chinese these days, overtaking the “ugly American” of old), overwhelm at times, and once cherished destinations have become clichés. I so remember when destinations such as Hong Kong, Venice, Machu Picchu, or Bora Bora had a real frisson of adventure. Such places are still indeed worth a visit, though the crowds diminish the experience. In October, it is hard to see Florence for the mobs of people trying to see Florence. I do have one tip for people going to the traditional sights: go in the very off seasons. A semi-deserted Venice in the snow is glorious as a prime example; Florence in January when most people one sees are actually apt to be Florentines is another. There are still exciting choices where we as Americans are not ourselves clichés: Montevideo, Melbourne, Luang Prabang (Asia’s perfect town), Durban, the High Tatras, the Marquesas (the most beautiful island group), Bariloche (where this newsletter began!) all come to mind. Boring people take boring trips. Let us help you erase the travel clichés and, dear traveler, the usual admonishment:

We dedicate this issue to him and include his final letter and quiz. Fred started this newsletter almost 55 years ago, hammering out his lyrical musings on a typewriter and sharing them with his growing group of clients. LODGING
WE LOVE
DISCREET, DELIGHTFUL, DE NIRO, DE BEST Tribeca’s oh-so-sexy 88-room Greenwich Hotel is the dream child of hotelier Ira Drukier and film icon Robert De Niro. A discreet entrance leads to a comfortable lobby that encourages lounging (and people-watching). Upstairs, no two rooms are alike: the style is a blend of Moroccan, French, and Japanese, with rugs covering reclaimed-oak floors and lots of tile. Some have balconies, and all have luxurious bathrooms. Locanda Verde, Andrew Carmellini’s bustling neighborhood restaurant downstairs, serves rustic Italian fare—don’t miss the handmade pastas. The drawing room, a warm space complete with a wood-burning fireplace (reserved for guests only) also serves the Locanda Verde menu—an Italian breakfast of pastries and coffee (which is divine). The spa is done in a traditional Japanese style, as is the lantern-lit hotel pool.
TAJ-TASTIC In a city of seemingly infinite choices, Taj Santacruz , opened in November, is an inspiring blend of sophisticated luxury, authentic Indian craftsmanship, contemporary style, and legendary Taj service perfected over Taj’s proud 110 year legacy. With the most spacious accommodations in Mumbai, including the Taj Club rooms and suites, serviced by intuitive Taj Butlers, the hotel takes prime position just minutes away from the most important commercial and business districts with easy access to the airport. The best of the city is right on your stylish doorstep.
Children stay free from January 5, 2016-April 30, 2016!
We’re particularly dazzled by the fabulous three-bedroom penthouse suite which has huge terraces and feels like a wellappointed apartment . But it’s the privacy, secluded courtyard and no-photos mantra that inspire A-listers to cocoon here again and again.
OFF THE TOURIST TRAIL Built in the 1880s, The Annandale homestead on rural New Zealand’s South Island has been lovingly restored to create a luxurious five-bedroom home (and now villas) in a private, tranquil setting. Their 4,000 acre working coastal farm and luxury villas are nested between the rolling hills of the Banks Peninsula and the sparkling water of the Pacific. Annandale features award-winning architecture and a unique experience referred to as “gumboot luxury.” Make yourself at home in the homestead, including infinity pool, spa pool, and tennis court—or in one of the private villas: choosing among contemporary architecture at Seascape in its own bay, hilltop Shepherd’s Cottage, or seaside family beach house Scrubby Bay. Activities are endless: farm tours, cattle mustering, guided water sports, and culinary lessons. From sunrise to sunset, your private retreat at Annandale is authentic and unforgettable.

THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN VENICE We’re all abuzz with the news of a new, unique experience in Venice—the restoration of a charming 16th-century villa by The Bauers owner and CEO Francesca Bortolotto Possati. This once abandoned, regal property was formerly one of Venice’s chicest addresses and had served as a residence to a number of noble Italian families. The property was wildly popular in the early part of the 20th century when it was an upscale pensione called Pensione Frollo. This pensione catered to an eclectic clientele of painters, writers, and actors. Located on the Giudecca Island facing St. Mark’s Square, Villa F is referred to as “the Soho of the Lagoon,” less known to tourists yet well frequented by artists and the bon vivant crowd. It provides a lovely escape from the bustle of the Venetian crowds but is still conveniently close to the city’s centre for shopping, restaurants, and museums. Their private shuttle boat service is available every day around the clock for guests departing from their dock to all the sister Bauer Hotels in St.Mark.
THE NEXT NAPA The world’s finest Malbec grapes are grown in Argentina’s Uco Valley, home to the 790-acre Casa de Uco Vineyards and Wine Resort. This picturesque estate—bordered by the mighty Andes and blessed with 330 days of sunshine a year—is as intoxicating as the wines. You can soak in the views from one of the 16 smartly furnished rooms and suites, discreetly tucked away within the vineyard. Days are filled with biking, trekking, horseback riding, or relaxing at the Uco Spa.
Insider’s tip: Wine enthusiasts can experience exclusive vineyard access on the fully managed estate, enjoying a variety of special privileges during their stay. Oh là là, c’est chic! The Ritz Paris is scheduled to reopen March 14, 2016! In addition to all the luxury it already offers, the hotel will also be home to the world’s first-ever Chanel Spa.

ISLAND TIME
There’s nothing better to banish those winter blues than an island getaway. If you’re feeling the funk, we’ve got the cure!
AMANERA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
DOLPHIN ISLAND, FIJI Dolphin Island is a stunning 14-acre private retreat that offers a maximum of just eight guests, the ultimate luxury private Pacific island experience, on an exclusive-use basis. The 14-acre holiday home of Alex van Heeren, owner of The Huka Retreats and Grande Provence Estate in Franschhoek (South Africa), was refurbished in 2011 to provide a “luxury castaway experience.” Interiors are relaxed yet smart, food is based around tropical fruit and seafood, and spa treatments use local plants and oils. It’s the ideal place for couples to be sure, but is also fun for families. Kids can explore and enjoy all the freedom that comes with having your own private island, where everything is designed to suit your own family pace and your own personal schedule. Call us about the four-night family special for two adults and two children.
SONG SAA, CAMBODIA SONEVA JANI, MALDIVES The magical Maldives has always been the ultimate holiday and honeymoon destination. Set in the dazzling Indian Ocean, there are 1,192 coral islands of which fewer than 200 are inhabited. Expected to open in 2016/2017 Soneva Jani will be the ultimate Maldives’ luxury resort. It will comprise 57 villas, including 24 over-water villas with one and two bedrooms which can only be reached by boat and which will all have a choice of either a sunrise or sunset view. There are also 20 one-bedroom Crusoe homes on land plus a choice of 13 three-bedroom villas on the beach. Soneva Jani is located on Medhufaru, a coral reef encircled island with a two-mile lagoon—a perfect marine reserve. Plus it’s just 30 minutes by seaplane from Malé International airport.
Served with daily direct flights from Siem Reap and its Angkor temples, the Cambodian south coast is no longer a remote destination. Spanning two untouched islands whose names, in Khmer, translate to “The Sweethearts,” Song Saa Private Island was created for romance. Establishing a new standard for sustainable luxury in Cambodia, this intimate all-inclusive resort comprises 27 jungle, ocean view, and overwater villas. It’s luxury that treads lightly. Traditional Khmer cuisine is served in a modern style, while the spa offers all-organic treatments. Practice yoga with the sunrise and join a marine biologist on a snorkeling safari. Being green has never been so glam!
Insider’s tip: Let the resort arrange a traditional blessings ceremony performed by local Buddhist monks—a wonderful way to celebrate love!
Life doesn’t get much better than an Aman Hotel and Resort, and the latest addition is the new Amanera Aman in the Dominican Republic—doubly exciting because the DR is the destination du jour. Water is intrinsic in the design of Amanera, which draws its name from the Sanskrit-derived word for “peace” and era, the word for “water” in Taíno. Opened this November, Amanera is situated on 2,000 acres of virtually untouched land comprised of verdant peaks and lush jungle with centuries-old trees and royal palms stretching across nearly seven miles of continuous Atlantic seacoast on Hispaniola’s northern shore. The surrounding region, meanwhile, is notable for being both pristine and sparsely populated, offering a variety of scenery that includes starkly beautiful desert areas, dramatic waterfalls, and sleepy towns. The resort will become the first golf-integrated Aman, sited alongside the undulating fairways and challenging greens of the lauded Playa Grande Golf Course, a track distinguished by having the highest number of oceanside holes in the Western hemisphere. Amanera offers 25 free-standing Casitas, 13 with private pools and unobstructed ocean vistas.

IMAGINE THE HAMPTONS (in vivid colors)
In the relaxed Bahian seaside village of Trancoso, Uxua Casa Hotel & Spa—a luxurious haven of barefoot chic style— has become the boutique lodging of choice for discerning Brazilian elite as much as for jet-setters from Europe and the US. From Wallpaper*-worthy interiors to a jaw-dropping beachside location, these 10 private casas offer a sustainable destination for those who don’t want to sacrifice either looks or substance. Uxua (pronounced Oo-shoo-ah) blends harmoniously into historic Trancoso’s picturesque town square, a UNESCO world heritage site. Uxua also boasts a spectacular beachfront lounge, an award-winning restaurant, gym, and the unique Almescar Spa, featuring treatments with rainforest ingredients. Casas range from one to three bedrooms, some of them restored fisherman homes facing the Quadrado. Each casa was created by local artisans using traditional techniques and reclaimed materials and feature kitchens and Bahian art and antiques.
STARRY, STARRY NIGHT Sandwiched between the Pacific and the Andes, the striking landscape of Chile’s remote Atacama Desert is like no place on earth—and Awasi Atacama is like no place you’ve ever stayed. A spectacular base for exploring the desert’s otherworldly environs, Awasi offers eight cottages made of adobe, wood, and stone; each featuring a private patio with an outdoor shower and solarium, rustic custom-built furniture, and abundant open space. You’ll be assigned a vehicle and private guide to accompany you on all-inclusive outings to the area’s volcanoes, ponds, and dry salt lakes. Return to delicious fare in the hotel restaurant, which features local foods such as quinoa and purple potatoes. Adventures include half- and full-day activities such as tranquil nature walks or vigorous hikes, cultural excursions, horse riding, cycling, visits to archaeological sites, and journeys to places tourists rarely venture.
Insider’s tip: Take advantage of Awasi’s astronomer-led nighttime stargazing outings; the skies above the Atacama Desert are some of the clearest on earth. Also, the chachacoma (a native herb) tea, served at check-in will help you adjust to the altitude.
Insider’s tip: Don’t miss the breakfast banquet, which should keep you satiated well past lunch, and track down the bartender who makes a mean passion fruit caipirinha.
EAU COURANT
LADIES OF THE LAC
Located on seven acres of glorious oceanfront, this former Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach property, now in its second year as Eau, retained its vaunted Forbes five-star spa rating for good reason. The award-winning Eau Spa is 42,000 square feet of pure indulgence (that’s a lot of pampered, pedicured feet!), featuring oversize Jacuzzis, treatment rooms with private gardens, and a cupcake lounge. (You heard right.)
Zurich’s venerable hotel, Baur au Lac, boasts a history as breathtaking as its Alp and lakeside setting. Opened in 1844 by Johannes Baur, the property has an illustrious past; it hosted the world-premiere of Wagner’s “Die Walküre,” with Richard himself performing, and Alfred Nobel’s former secretary conceived of the Nobel Peace Prize in one of the hotel’s salons. It’s also the place where Poe’s own Swiss Misses Mildred Cooper and Margaret Kemp reposed last spring. “So fabulous!” says Mildred.
And super chic designer Jonathan Adler oversaw the renovation of the 309 guestrooms and suites, ensuring that you’ll be relaxing in style. Eau also has a kids’ and teen program that get high marks; they offer both AcquaNuts (kids’ camp) or Coast (tweens’ club), both an adventure in social and sporting activities. Other resort amenities include four distinct restaurants and lounges, Har-tru clay tennis courts, ocean cabanas, and a full array of water sports. That all sounds nice, but look for us in the cupcake lounge.
Today, a cast of royals, actors, and musicians (and, of course, Mildred and Margaret) are drawn to the grande-dame hotel for its stunning views, private park on the lakeshore, and location to Zurich’s historic sites and the Bahnhofstrasse, a shopper’s paradise. Of the four dining rooms, the al fresco Terrasse restaurant is the city’s summer hot spot, where locals and guests mingle over light meals and cocktails at the canopy-covered tables.

A LODGE OF A DIFFERENT STRIPE
ON THE MARK
On the edge of the Banjaar River, peacefully overlooking Kanha National Park, sits Banjaar Tola, a Taj Safari Lodge. Kanha is one of the best maintained National Parks in India, and the best way to experience the wonder and majesty of this prime wildlife reserve is via the legendary hospitality of this lodge.
The Mark in NYC is the perfect combo of uptown panache and downtown chic. Housed in a 1927 landmark building at the corner of Madison Avenue and 77th Street, the hotel was reimagined by legendary designer Jacques Grange.
The Banjaar Tola Lodge and suites epitomize the design mastery of Sanjay Prakash, a renowned environmental architect who is deeply committed to energy-conscious architecture and eco-friendly design. Banjaar Tola consists of two elegant camps containing nine tented suites, each featuring its own intimate private deck along the river. Wildlife you can expect to see while there: tigers, threestriped palm squirrels, common langurs, jackals, wild pigs, and black bucks, striped hyenas, leopards, mouse deer, porcupines, and ant-eating pangolins, as well as over 200 recorded bird species. Lodge is not operational from July 1-October 15 due to the monsoon season.
The hotel sparkles from top to bottom, from the striped marble floors and modernist furnishings in the lobby to the cow-print upholstery in the chic bar just off the entrance. Rooms are opulently appointed in very modern style, with plush Italian linens, Sub-Zero freezers for ice, and more closet space than most New York City apartments. Bathrooms have marble floors, decadent sunken tubs, and enough towels to dry a small nation. There’s a state-of-theart gym and a posh Frédéric Fekkai salon for blowouts and benefit-worthy color jobs. The hotel restaurant, the Mark by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, has become a bona-fide destination for well-heeled locals and neighborhood visitors alike. Best of all is the five-bedroom penthouse suite—so spectacular!
QUIRKY OPULENCE IN THE VINEYARDS Ritz, glitz, and an extraordinary collection of top South African art co-exist at Franschhoek’s most flamboyant boutique hotel, La Residence. Hidden amidst vineyards and fruit orchards in the foothills of the Franschhoek mountains, the setting is dreamily Capebucolic. But beyond its angular sienna-coloured facade, you enter a very different world. Take a dash of Versailles and a hint of Rajasthani palace, add chandeliers, sculptures, modern art, and a twist of Moroccan riad, and you begin to get the highly spiced flavor of Franchhoek’s most opulent hideaway. The hotel was the brainchild of Liz and Phil Biden who created 11 huge, spellbindingly snazzy rooms flanking an infinity pool, five sumptuous Vineyard Suites, scented gardens, and airy reception rooms. We love the place’s theatricality, its decorative pizzazz, and its eclectic art. If you’ve got something to celebrate in style then look no further.

A GRAND ESCAPE TO COLONIAL TIMES Occupying an enviable location between the Sabi Sand,
Timbavati, and Kruger parks, Tintswalo Safari Lodge is a dream-come-true safari destination. The “big five” surround the lodge; in fact, the gorgeous main lodge overlooks a favorite watering hole of a large herd of elephants. The suites are decorated to recall 19th-century African explorers, while also offering modern comforts such as indoor/ outdoor shower, private plunge pool, and AC. After a day’s exploration, relax at the Vital Source Spa and follow up with an alfresco dinner, enjoying imaginative wine cellar offerings and the unique tastes and spices of Africa. This is one of Margaret and Mildred’s favorite spots!
Insider’s tip: Go stargazing with Tintswalo’s guides; they have extensive knowledge and are equipped with a Meade telescope to plot the constellations.

A Walk on the Wild Side
A BRIEF PRIMER ON
Getting Through Customs And Security With Ease
Maggie Hogan and Don Pfeifer in South Africa
GLOBAL ENTRY & TSA PRECHECK POE: How did you feel about getting so up close and personal to that meerkat and what other animals did you see (at close range or at a safe distance)? Maggie Hogan: The meerkats were so fun. They kept cautioning us not to pet them. They seemed so sweet, you really had to tell yourself not to touch them, just let them touch you. Apparently they will bite and bear their teeth to those who don’t heed the advice! All of the animals are so special, and it’s thrilling to see them in their natural habitat. We had an especially close encounter with a mother leopard who came right up to the vehicle and tried to pull our fabric cooler off the back. She looked me straight in the eyes, and all I could say to Don was, “Don’t move a muscle!” She was very hungry and could smell the beef jerky in the cooler. It was very exciting, and I was thrilled to get a great shot up close. The lions are always exciting, and there’s something so soulful about the elephants. I think I could visit Africa over and over and never tire of being there.
What did you enjoy about the Tauck experience? This was my first Tauck trip, and they did a great job. The itinerary was diverse, and I felt like I got a comprehensive look at the area through different views. Each property was beautiful and unique. Tauck has teamed up with BBC Earth, and we had an opportunity for education, or a lecture or special equipment to use in order to enhance our experience at each place.
From the saltpans to Victoria Falls, you experienced some dramatic landscape; did you have a favorite spot? The Kalahari Desert and Makgadikgadi saltpans were definitely the big surprise for me in that they were like nothing I had seen, and had I booked the trip myself it would not have been on my list. I am really glad I had the opportunity to experience that area. Overall, I loved it all. I would like to go back and have more time in Cape Town, am so glad we arrived early and spent more time around the Falls than the group—so magnificent; I loved the Moremi Game Reserve and especially the Okavango Delta. We had one day in the Delta at Xudum Lodge where we began the morning in mokoros (the traditional dugout canoes) where your perspective is low slung in the water. We were poled by our guides through the reeds of the grass looking at the small painted frogs, water lilies, and other river life. We came in from the water, hopped into Land Rovers and went into the field and climbed straight into a helicopter. We flew (without doors I might add) above the delta looking at the hippo grasses, peering into a malibou stork nests, and seeing the elephants wading in the waters. You could see all of the trails the hippos and elephants leave as they lumber through the grass and water. Talk about a change in perspective—what a day!
If you’re a U.S. citizen who travels internationally, there’s a $100 investment we recommend you make. It’s more comprehensive than TSA PreCheck, the fast-pass option that gets you through airport security with your shoes on and dignity intact, and only costs $15 more. Global Entry is a five-year membership that allows travelers to bypass the lines at customs by checking in at a kiosk with an entry pin number—your “Trusted (Known) Traveler number”—and a fingerprint scan. It takes less than a month to complete the process, which only has two steps: Fill out an online application (which takes about 20 minutes), and schedule an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Center at a nearby airport. TSA PreCheck is another Trusted Traveler Program designed to make clearing security at airports much easier. Simply put, Global Entry is designed to expedite the customs process, while TSA PreCheck does the same for the security screening process. Note: Global Entry travelers are automatically qualified for TSA PreCheck, but the reverse is not true.

REAL ID
STEP
Will you need a passport for domestic travel in the U.S. in 2016? Four states and one U.S. territory have driver licenses that don’t measure up to the Department of Homeland Security’s standards. But what does that mean for travelers from those five states, which include New York, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and American Samoa? At this point, not much.
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Benefits of enrolling in STEP include: receiving important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in your destination country, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans, helping the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency.
But that isn’t stopping speculation that soon travelers from those states will have to produce a U.S. passport or other additional documentation to take a domestic flight. The issue at hand is a Homeland Security program called REAL ID, which is meant to “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.” If this comes to pass, then travelers would need an “acceptable” second form of ID, which includes passports, passport cards, permanent resident cards, U.S. military IDs, and Global Entry, and NEXUS cards. Visit http://www.dhs.gov/real-id-publicfaqs for more info.

The Chef’s Table This specialty restaurant serves as an intimate dining alternative to the Main Restaurant. It seats a limited number of people and features a view of the chef as he prepares an array of delicious dishes for your gastronomic pleasure. Dining at this restaurant is included in the cruise fare.

“AmaWaterways has a serious commitment to fine food and wine, and related enrichment opportunities, particularly through shore excursions. This would appeal to fans of Oceania Cruises” “This line is best compared to Four Seasons. In style and substance, AmaWaterways offers a contemporary, upscale cruise experience, with service that is a hallmark.” Information taken from the River Cruising Guide from www.cruisecritic.com
La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs™ AmaWaterways is the only river cruise line ever inducted into the Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a prestigious international gastronomic society dedicated to fine cuisine. “Africa is mystic; it is wild; it is a sweltering inferno; it is a photographer’s paradise, a hunter’s Valhalla, an escapist’s Utopia. It is the last vestige of a dead world or the cradle of a shiny new one. To a lot of people, as to myself, it is just ‘home.’” BERYL MARKHAM, West with the Night
In July, my husband and I and our three children (9, 6, and 2), spent a week in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. As a family, we spend a lot of time in the outdoors, so beaches, mountains, and deserts, along with all of the creatures that inhabit them, are a big draw. Costa Rica proved to be a perfect match for our interests, and it was a great choice for a family. We found beautiful lodging at Buena Vista Luxury Villas, where we rented a twolevel “casa” and spent most of our downtime on one of the two porches that faced the Pacific coastline about a half-mile down the hill. We chose half-day outings, so that we would have plenty of time to relax and enjoy life in the “casa”. Our adventures included: a jeep excursion through the jungle; two inshore fishing trips; a catamaran trip; and a mangrove swamp tour. We had a fantastic experience with each of these activities, and the professionalism and enthusiasm of our Costa Rican guides had everything to do with this. I can’t pick a favorite outing, as they were each incredible. I do, however, have certain images from each of them that are forever etched in my mind: my 9 year-old daughter sitting on the catamaran wearing her pink bathing suit and oversized sunglasses; my 6 year-old son kissing his freshly caught “Roosterfish” and mugging for the camera; my 2 yearold with a monkey on his head in the mangrove swamp. I think, though, that the experience that was the most meaningful to me happened in the late afternoon of our last day. We swam for a little while in the pool and then walked down the hill to take in a final swim on the beach. The waves rolled gently, the kids hunted for crabs, and I visited with a new friend. Eventually, a storm that we had been watching from the distance chased us back to shore. While other travelers waited for the resort minivan to come chauffeur them back to their lodgings before the storm, we trekked up the hill in our slippery flip-flops and bathing suits. It turned out to be a stormy and magical journey. It is this little clip on our vacation reel that I return to again and again. I see the five of us, soaking wet, watching the springs come
At that moment, it seemed like the soil and plants and animals were all coming together to say, “Don’t forget there are places like this in the world!” to life, turning over logs to see what might be underneath, picking up the vibrant flowers that had been shaken loose from the plants by the hard rain, and jumping up and down as we watched the monkeys swing and leap in celebration of the gift of rain. At that moment, it seemed like the soil and plants and animals were all coming together to say, “Don’t forget there are places like this in the world!” And, I am sure I heard them say, “We will still be here when you come back.”

EXPERIENCES
JAPAN: A YEN FOR ADVENTURE NORDIC NIRVANA A mini Earth science lesson: The northern lights take place on an 11-year solar cycle. Solar activity, including massive solar eruptions, can occur anytime and produce intense aurora, but those eruptions occur erratically and unpredictably. The 11-year cycle creates a period of frequency, but we are at the beginning a downward leg of the cycle. This means less frequent northern lights, an effect that will likely last until 2024 or even 2026. Lucky for you, however, 2016 will still provide ample sky shows, so there’s still time to see the aurora borealis in all its glory. If you want to catch nature’s most impressive light show, and check a major item off your bucket list, let us plan a trip for you to one of these destinations near the Arctic: Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Russia, Alaska, Canada, Norway, Greenland, Scotland, or the Faroe Islands.
Japan is a land of incredible contrasts; from neon skylines and ancient castles to serene shrines and speeding bullet trains, a tour of the Land of the Rising Sun never fails to fascinate. In Tokyo, marvel at the unique balancing act between Japan’s ancient traditions and its modern outlook. Participate in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony at the Happo-en Garden, zip to the top of Tokyo Tower for panoramic views of Japan’s capital and discover fashion-forward style in the Harajuku neighborhood. Bullet train it to Kyoto, the cultural center of Japan, and marvel at the colors and tastes of your exclusive, multicourse kaiseki banquet, complete with a geisha or maiko. Visit I.M. Pei’s striking Miho Museum and discover Japan’s most traditional works of architecture in Kyoto’s many temples. Travel to Osaka and view a 17th-century castle, or go further afield and explore Hiroshima, where you ferry to tranquil Miyajima Island and overnight in one of the country’s finest ryokans. Whatever version of Japan you want to discover, rest assured that a Poe trip to this spellbinding country provides you with inspiring memories to last a lifetime.

LAST-MINUTE SPRING BREAK IDEAS For the procrastinators among you, check out the following options for a spring break to remember—but call us sooner rather than later! Tauck’s Bridges program takes you to the best family vacation destinations around the globe—on 19 awardwinning European odysseys, African safaris, expeditions in Latin America, and adventures in North America’s national parks. They handcraft each itinerary to inspire wonder and enrich understanding, opening doors to this incredible world of ours. Discover it all by land, river, sea, horseback, and more!
Destinations that may work for spring breakers’ schedules include: Cuba, Costa Rica, Galapagos, and Italy.
One of the best places to see the northern lights is, of course, Iceland, which is fast becoming a hot destination. An underpopulated island marooned near the top of the globe, Iceland is, literally, a country in the making. It’s a vast volcanic laboratory where mighty forces shape the earth: geysers gush, mud pots splutter, ice-covered volcanoes rumble, and glaciers grind great pathways through the mountains.
THE EAGLE HAS LANDED The ultimate Okavango Delta water-based safari, Belmond Eagle Island Lodge in Botswana reopened in November 2015 following an almost total rebuild, bringing innovation and originality to the Okavango experience. Reflecting the region’s natural beauty and offering an insight into the heart of the delta, local artisans and materials were used to create the lodge’s fresh new tented guest accommodation, restaurant, and lounge. Each of the lodge’s new 12 Deluxe Tented Rooms is generously sized, beautifully appointed, and boasts its own plunge pool and outdoor deck with views of the delta. No other lodge in Africa offers such a water-focused safari experience, with activities including motorboat safaris, barge cruises, and mekoro (a local canoe) safaris, as well as walking and air safaris in a private helicopter.
But don’t for a moment think it’s only about the great outdoors. The counterpoint to so much natural beauty is found in Iceland’s cultural life, which celebrates a literary legacy that stretches from medieval sagas to contemporary thrillers by way of Nobel Prize winners. Live music is everywhere, as is visual art, handicrafts, and locavore cuisine. The world’s most northerly capital is home to the kind of egalitarianism, green thinking, and effortlessly stylish locals that its Nordic brethren are famous for—all wrapped in Iceland’s assured individuality. Whist there, we recommend you check out this well-off-thebeaten-track hotel guaranteed to take your breath away— The Ion, an abandoned workers’ inn turned luxury on lava fields! It’s a super-stylish spot amid super-charged splendor. Tip: sample the shellfish soup and sautéed cod.

PUT THE “POE” IN POLAND Nowhere in Europe does history feel as alive and contemporary as it does in Poland. Whether you’re a World War II buff or your interests stretch further back in time to the Middle Ages, there’s riveting history here for every interest. It’s an inspiring destination, as well. Cities such as Warsaw, Gdansk, and Wroclaw were flattened in World War II; now, they’ve been restored to their former beauty and are brimming with culture and energy. The country’s medieval capital, Kraków, is easily Prague’s equal for architectural splendor, and maybe a notch above when it comes to concerts, museums, and Jewish heritage (just don’t tell the Czechs).
Highlights: • Warsaw’s Royal Castle • Czestochowa’s Jasna Gora Monastery & the Black Madonna Shrine • Auschwitz-Birkenau • Cable car ride to Gubalowka Hill • Rafting trip on the Dunajec River • Krakow’s Royal Castle & Cathedral • Wieliczka Salt Mine • Copernicus Museum in Torun
• Organ concert in the Oliwa Cathedral in Gdansk • Malbork Castle • Chopin concert with a glass of sparkling wine • Home-hosted dinner by a local family at the foot of Lowicz Castle • The Panorama of the Battle of Raclawice • Museum of Folk Architecture in Olsztynek
Gerald Hatherly, named one of the “Greatest Travel Pros on Earth” by Condé Nast Traveler, has been A&K’s China Specialist since 1986. Hong Kong–based Hatherly, who is fluent in Mandarin and spends 150 days a year crisscrossing the country, is a cultural encyclopedia and knows everyone who’s anyone in China. Here we offer an A&K Q&A. (Find the full interview on our website.) Why is now a good time to travel to China?
There’s also an undeniable “off the beaten track” appeal to Poland. Poles have long known about their country’s treasures, but for the rest of us, the country is still largely terra incognita. That’s changing slowly, but for the time being, that means the lines into the attractions are a bit less crushing and the welcomes here that much more genuine than you might find in better-known destinations.
I would say that safety and security are important; China is among the safest destinations on earth, and in a time of increasing insecurity in Europe and the Middle East China offers the leisure traveler the promise of a secure destination. In terms of infrastructure there has never been a better time to visit China; the government has poured billions of dollars into infrastructure development from new roads, new airports, and a growing network of high-speed rail which has increased accessibility to areas once difficult to access. Consonant with the improving infrastructure is the growth of newer and better hotels so the foundation for travel—transportation and accommodation— have improved considerably.
Guaranteed departures in the spring, summer, and fall 2016 with our preferred tour operator, the exceptional Mazurkas Travel, all begin in Warsaw.
Another reason is that China is a raising power on the world stage, and I always tell people it behooves us as world citizens to understand countries like China and India which are becoming important players in the world.
SOUTHERN ADVENTURE 9 Days / 8 Nights THE MAGIC OF POLAND 7 Days / 6 Nights THE MANY FACES OF POLAND 14 Days / 13 Nights THE TREASURES OF POLAND 11 Days / 10 Nights
What are some common misconceptions people have about China? There are so many! The ones that I would like to dispel are: • China is a police state—It is the least authoritarian state that I have travelled in; you seldom, if ever, encounter overt police contact; local Chinese are not afraid to approach you; the police are generally
helpful and you can travel unimpeded throughout the country including Tibet (as long as you have the correct travel documentation). • The Chinese are not helpful—The Chinese are among the friendliest and most accessible people that I have encountered. In fact, I speak to lots of travelers from the U.S. and the first and most memorable impression about China is just how friendly and good-natured the Chinese are. • The food—I still meet people who come to China with a suitcase of snack foods. China is now a wealthy nation and a culture that has a deep concern for cuisine so access to good food is not an issue. In fact, Chinese cuisine in China is among the best of any cuisine on earth. • Transportation—There is still a lingering image of China being a destination where domestic flights are risky whether it is because of poor equipment, bad pilots, delays, etc. but nothing is further from the truth today. China is the world’s single largest and most important buyer of commercial aircraft, and both Boeing and Airbus can attest to this. Domestic air routes are the fastest growing on earth, and I travel the length and breadth of the country and have seen a tremendous improvement in airports, aircraft, in-flight service, etc. In fact I have seldom, in the past five years, had a flight delay.

D
ubai International Airport has surpassed Heathrow as the world’s busiest global hub, while three Gulf airlines—Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad—are scooping up passengers like crazy. It’s a tectonic shift in aviation that threatens to leave the West’s cramped, bare-bones carriers in the dust. The magiccarpet experience on one of these aircraft is rather like checking into a small luxury hotel on the wing. For anyone who has endured the post-deregulation austerity of U.S. airlines over the past few decades—uncomfortable, overcrowded bus journeys in the sky—the experience of flying on Emirates or Etihad comes close to recapturing the joy of jet travel from Pan Am’s heyday. There’s only one problem, though: You may never be able to travel normally ever again. Below we take a look at two of the these luxury liners:
EMIRATES
ETIHAD AIRWAYS
Emirates was the first airline to install first class cabins with sliding doors, making them one of the leaders in luxury travel, but the service is what truly sets this airline apart from the rest. The cabins are spacious and cozy, and the cabin crew converts your seat into a full bed with real mattress as part of their turndown service.
Starting in December, Etihad Airway, the UAE’s fastest growing national carrier, will offer “The Residence”—a completely private three-room suite with a closed-off bedroom, living room, and private bathroom. It is essentially your own apartment in the sky—a unique and bespoke travel experience. Designed for up to two guests travelling together, it has been created by leading interior designers and hospitality experts. The Residence is a haven of tranquility, reflecting an exclusive lifestyle that offers the ultimate in high-end luxury.
The comfortable seats—all with digital entertainment systems—have 34-inch pitch in economy, 73 inches in business, and 80 inches in first, the latter classes offering lie-flat beds. The vibe is pure glamour. Think Virgin Atlantic in its youthful heyday, when the journey was an exhilarating part of the experience rather than a dread necessity. And once you do book Emirates’ cabin experience, the perks are worth the money: a separate, private boarding door with no line, unlimited food and drink, top-shelf liquors and Champagne, use of first-class lounges in layover airports, a full lie-flat bed, and an on-board shower with heated floor so you can arrive at your destination rested and relaxed. Amenities: Minibar, private vanity table with adjustable lighting, personal closet, access to onboard showers and spas, touchscreen TVs, and on-demand meal service.
Amenities: 32-inch flat screen TVs, shower, Egyptian cotton sheets, and a personal butler for the duration of the flight. Etihad is famous for creating a personal, intimate feel, giving new meaning to the adage, “It’s about the journey, not the destination.”
INTERESTING FACT: Emirates was the first airline in the world to install personal video screens in all seats, introduce telecommunications onboard, & install inflight telephones & fax machines.

MANN
Attorney at law and Poe Traveler Drake Mann recently enjoyed a safari with our East Africa expert David Sugden of Africa House. Herewith he shares reflections and insights from his time there.
POE: What was one of your most memorable experiences? MANN: I can’t name just one. At dawn one morning, I went bow hunting on foot near Lake Eyasi (Tanzania) with a small group of Hadzabe, a tribe of hunter-gatherers who live completely off the land. Even my short interaction with them and their pattern of living—few possessions, loose leadership structure, nature-centered perception of time, modest impact on their surroundings—had a way of recalibrating my own perception of place, time, and people. In Nairobi, Suggy took me over to see the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s efforts to save orphaned baby elephants. The little ones are surprisingly sweetnatured and funny. In some felt way, we humans elevate ourselves through efforts such as the Sheldrick Trust’s. What game did you see? I saw plenty of cats (lions, leopards, cheetahs, sometimes with their cubs, and one serval); elephants from babies, to migrating families, to solitary bulls; all kinds of antelope (wildebeest, hartebeest, dik-dik, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, kudu, impala, eland…and more); three kinds of giraffe (Rothschild, reticulated, and Masai); zebra (Grevy’s and plains); rhino (black and white, the dung of which I can now distinguish, thanks very much); baboons; warthogs; hyenas; jackals; and, one of my new favorites, rock hyrax—and more types of birds than I could count.
What surprised you most or defied expectations? The diversity of climate (and so, flora and fauna) within short distances. There was a cool rainforest shrouded in fog, for example, along the rim of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area but just a short drive down to the base of the caldera, the sky was wide and clear. I also expected tons of annoying bugs, but there weren’t many (except for one small area with some tsetse flies that my guide was aware of and “migration flies” near the bigger animals sometimes). Also I didn’t expect to see so many familiar behaviors played across so many different species: personalities; cliquishness; maternal protectiveness and juvenile clinginess; male adolescent rambunctiousness and moves toward independence; and the social isolation of cranky old males, the lattermost of which I made particular note of.
I was also surprised, on reflection, that Bert Lahr’s Cowardly Lion costume had such realistic-looking paws, but I don’t suppose that’s what you’re really asking.
What’s your next destination? I’ll probably go back to the DPRK (North Korea) to see how much things have changed since Tony [Poe], Fred [Poe], and I went in 2007. North Korea was not open to Americans at the time, but now they’re more receptive to American tourists. They have some bicycle tours that look interesting.

THE GREAT WALL CALLS Margaret and Mildred’s adventure in China
EUROPEAN VACATION: Normandy, Champagne, Budapest, Lucerne & Zurich with Margaret & Mildred This past July, Margaret and Mildred took a two-week trip through Europe where they sampled summer Champagne, cozied up to fragrant fondue, struck a solemn note in Normandy, marveled at the Market in Budapest, and ate gelato at every stop along the way. The heat was oppressive, and adequate AC hard to find, yet they had a splendid (if sweltering) time. Here are some highlights (for the purpose of this article we will refer to them as M2): DAY 1 THE NORMANDY AREA: M2 enjoyed a tour of Monet’s Giverny garden and home. They arrived early with their guide and were able to walk through at a leisurely pace (flaneur style). They then grabbed a bite in the shade at L’Ancien Hôtel Restaurant Baudy. From there it was on to the Relais Chateau La Ferme St. Simeon, located on a hill overlooking the river in the picturesque town of Honfleur (the place loved by the Impressionists for its light). Day 2 MONT SAINT MICHEL: For centuries one of Europe’s major pilgrimage destinations, Mont St. Michel (and its breathtaking bay) is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. M2 ascended the Grand Staircase (some 300 steps) of this magical island fortress topped by a medieval monastery. It’s spectacular sight, but not for the walking averse. Day 3 THE NORMANDY BEACHES: With superlative guide Nigel Stewart as their guide, M2 found the experience both moving and edifying and were also struck by the distinct character of the different sites they visited: The American Cemetery, Utah Beach, and The German Cemetery, and The British Cemetery. Day 4 CHAMPAGNE COUNTRY/REIMS: M2 stayed in La Briqueterie in Vinay, set amidst the vines in the Reims Area. They took a two-hour tour of Pommery champagne and enjoyed a tasting of “a delicious, refreshing summer blend!” Days 5-10 BUDAPEST: The Four Seasons Budapest was “a lovely, centrally located hotel with great AC that’s on the Pest side of the river. Highlights included St. Stephens, a private tour of the Parliament House, The Market, and fabulous food (Pierrot, in the 13th-century Old Bake House of Castle District, was a favorite).

THE OFFICIAL MAGAZINE OF POE TRAVEL
That’s why for Margaret and Mildred’s first trip there, they entrusted themselves with Imperial Tours. They traveled with their own host who stayed with them 24/7 and also had excellent guides throughout their journey.
There are few–if any–cultures with a history as long, complicated, and fascinating as China’s. From the remote, arid deserts of the wild northwest to neon- “It was so amazing—a true adventure!” says Margaret. “The Great Wall was astounding; we lit Hong Kong in the south, China is a colorful, clashing patchwork of the ancient and modern. The traveled to a remote spot to see it and were the only people there . . . I was surprised by the clear blue diversity of this sprawling country’s archaeology, skies in Beijing, no smog whatsoever . . . we loved architecture, cuisine, and cultural heritage will the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven (where fascinate even the most jaded traveler. we saw a group doing some kind of line dancing There are countless sights to visit in China, and tai chi), Tiananmen square, Guilin, Shanghai. including the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, and It was just a remarkable experience from beginning the terracotta soldiers of Xi’an. But travel to China to end. It felt adventurous but safe. The cuisine is also affords an opportunity to see a thriving world fantastic; the hotels are beautiful. It’s a great small power, whose might is reflected in the skyscrapers group and family destination.” of Pudong and the explosive growth in other cities. “Our clients love Europe and tend to make return Wherever you go, a China travel guide is essential trips there, but we feel strongly about travel to as you navigate this complex nation. China. The time is now.”
LUCERNE: Gorgeous scenery on the drive from Zurich— many farms, farm houses, and lakes. “We wandered the quiet city with our lovely guide who looked like Grace Kelly, seeing The Collegiate and Parish Church, the Lion of Lucerne, the bridge, the Jesuit Church, and then the main rail station.” They learned why the Swiss are the world’s mediators, why their flag is unlike any other flags in the world. In the afternoon, they headed up to Mount Stanserhorn for a great (if hard-won) view. (Getting there entailed a train ride, a cog wheel a gondola, and some deep breathing.) Day 13 BERN: They met their guide in the capital (UNESCO sight) after arriving via Swiss rail. They enjoyed the sights, including the clock tower, but (sadly) not the fondue. Day 14 They traveled back in time on beautiful Lake Lucerne aboard a 150-year-old steamer. Day 15 ZURICH: Bauer Au Lac elicited a resounding “Wow!” from both M2. This sixth-generation managed hotel has an over-the-top staff, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and an enviable setting. They met their lovely guide for a walking tour of Zurich, the old town, where they visited Fraumünster Church (with the Chagall windows), the clock tower, and learned the secret story of Lindt chocolate. “Everything in Zurich screams order, but the little streets throughout the old town are quaint and full of life. Compared to Bern, they have 1,200 fountains with crystal clear cold water!” (They departed and returned with ease thanks to GLOBAL ENTRY—ask us about this!)
WHY CHINA NOW? • Cuisine

• Culture
• The second largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world, totaling 48.
