Dear Traveler, Every time I come home from a trip it has been the best trip yet! I’m just home from a slow voyage up the west coast of Africa from Cape Town to Accra stopping in all manner of exotic places. Some of my favorites I had hardly heard of before I started researching the trip: Lobito in Angola, a lovely Portuguese colonial port with immense grace, good beaches, and a super friendly welcome: Limbe in Cameroon, with a gorilla rescue farm and scores and scores of the beasts who have formed new families; Sao Tome, a little independent island nation which produces the world’s best chocolate. A highlight for me was Accra, as Ghana is so vibrant today with modern art, with such a long historical memory, as positive as next-door Nigeria is anarchistic and the Cote d’Ivoire is sullen. One thing is for sure— one West African place is often as different from
the next as Finland might be from Portugal. The point of all of this—when you think you have seen it all, you have just begun! On my ship the Brits were the largest contingent followed by an enormously attractive, savvy mostly youngish group from the Peoples’ Republic of China! Travel has changed more in the last ten years than it has since the first passenger airplane went into service. Think of the places which were once absolutely never-never lands which are now common to our travels: Kathmandu, the Chilean Fjords, Petra, The Galapagos Islands, Burma, and New Guinea all come to mind. Twenty-five years ago how many people did you know who went to Bhutan, Antarctica, Zanzibar or even the Amazon?
Fred at a school in Togo, West Africa.
Travel changes before our eyes. It has not been that long ago that Cancun was a deserted spit of sand, that by contrast Acapulco (which now has almost no direct air service from the USA) was the cat’s meow. We have watched Turkey ascend to one of the most sought-after of all destinations while its neighbor Greece not only suffers economically but has only one direct air flight from the USA. South African travel has soared since the sad days of Apartheid; people go to the beach in droves not only to Thailand but also to Vietnam and Indonesia. Small luxury and soft -adventure cruise ships have infinitely more interesting itineraries . . . but still at Poe Travel our bread and butter might be the great “big four” cities of touristic Europe: London, Paris, Vienna, and Rome. There is a very good reason they are travel clichés— one can never get enough of any of them!
The point of all of this blather and rhetoric is just this question: why are you sitting at home reading this newsletter? Why aren’t you gazing at Lake Baikal or shooting birds in Argentina? Why are you not planning to put a look at history-in-the-making in Shanghai into your travel plans or taking a cooking course in Tuscany? You don’t need to go all the way to Lomé, Togo (the only four letter capital of a four letter nation?) as I just did to start the travel juices flowing. A few days dining high on the hog in Montreal or sitting on the Oregon coast might be just the ticket. At any rate, dear travelers, PLEASE GO AWAY! Your Friendly Travel Agent, FRED

Ellison Poe’s dispatch from Kashmir Ellison recently celebrated her 50th birthday with a wild romp through India. The journey began in Darjeeling in the Himalayas at the old colonial tea estate called Glenburn. Then Ellison and friends headed to Kashmir which, she says, was “magical.” Ellison enthuses, “We had a wonderful friend of Shonali’s [longtime Poe pal], Muzakir Andrabi, show us his country, and we were privileged to meet his family and see his gorgeous scarves being made on old looms.” They then traveled to the golden temple at Armristar where they saw volunteers feed over 100,000 people—a transformative experience. After that they headed to the Ananda Spa, located in the tranquil Himalayan foothills, close to the mythological cities of Haridwar and Rishikesh, surrounded by graceful Sal forests, overlooking the peaceful Ganga as it meanders into the distance. Ellison ended her adventure in Bombay, “boogieing the night away.”

Margaret and Mildred with their exceptional guides at Royal Malewane.
Margaret Kemp & Mildred Cooper send news of South Africa En route to South Africa, Margaret and Mildred spent a few days kicking around London where they stayed at the The Wellesley—a glamorous 1920s townhouse, restored with a modern take on the art deco style, in prestigious Knightsbridge. There they were treated like queens, enjoying over -the-top service and every amenity imaginable— including a Rolls Royce ride about town. From there it was off to South Africa, first stop Tintswalo Atlantic in Cape Town where they soaked in the sights of Table Mountain and Hout Bay. M&M then traveled to La Residence & Villas in the Cape Winelands, a stunning estate high above Franschhoek created by arbiter of style Liz Biden. From there they headed to Tintswalo Safari Lodge, located on a private reserve open to Kruger National Park. M&M loved the owners, Gaye and Ernest Corbett, as much as the lodge itself. Conservationists and adventurers, Gaye and Ernest regaled them with their many exploits in Africa (including a car race from South Africa to Cairo). Margaret says of the couple, “They are amazing. Ernest is like Ernest Hemingway . . .
They have such passion, are so dynamic and funny . . . to be on safari with them was a scream..” M&M’s stay at Tintswalo also included getting up close and personal with a pride of lions and a close call with a marauding band of monkeys. The next stop was another Liz Biden creation, Royal Malewane Private Game Reserve where M&M experienced the wild heart of Africa’s bushveld with luxury beyond compare. (Bill Gates was their suite’s prior occupant.) M&M were then off to Singita Boulders which rests on the banks of the Sand River in the Singita Private Game Reserve, in the heart of the Sabi Sands. There they saw a tremendous amount of game, including leopards and rhino. “The most leopards I’ve ever seen,” says Margaret. “We also saw over 500 cape buffalo birthing babies and lots of birds . . . the wildlife was just unbelievable.” They ended their stay in Johannesburg (or Jo’burg), where they visited Soweto, Nelson Mandela’s former home, the Apartheid Museum, and other sites. Bookending their safari with stays in cities made for a perfect experience. “Africa speaks to your soul,” says Margaret. “It needs to be on everybody’s bucket list.”
( from left to right) Karen Sugden with Africa House Safaris, Nancy & Joell Daniel (Orlando, FL) in Bwindi Impenetrable Forrest.
Nancy O’Brien’s dispatch from Uganda, Tanzania & Kenya The intrepid Nancy just returned from a wildly thrilling three-week trek to see the mountain gorillas in Uganda and chimps in Tanzania with Africa House Safaris and Taste Africa. Nancy tells us that the oft-overused phrase “trip of a lifetime” definietly applies here. “It’s a trip I didn’t know I wanted to do. It wasn’t on my radar,” she says, “But it was life changing.” She began her voyage in swell style in Paris at the gorgeous George V, before heading to Entebbe. The first day they climbed Murchison falls and “almost died.” The next day, they were off to Kanyanchu Park in search of chimpanzees. After trekking into the jungle, they came upon a family of chimps and observed them at close range for over an hour as they went about their business. For the babies, that business included clinging to their mamas’ backs and undersides, tussling, and making mischief. A juvenile male—a “Marlon Brando type,” says Nancy—tried to entice one of the females, while another shook the trunk of a giant ficus tree, which Nancy learned was a means of communication. From there, it was off to Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous
for its tree-climbing lions. And, as promised, there they were, like oversized housecats, lounging in enormous ficus trees, some with their legs dangling astride the limbs. On the next leg of the journey, the group set off in search of Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, which Nancy says is true to its name. After trekking for over an hour through thick vines and brush, they came within ten feet of a huge silverback and his family. There were six females and 10-12 babies, one of whom climbed up on a rock and beat his chest (silverback style), while others crawled all over the napping silverback. “These animals are extremely powerful and majestic. I left this experience feeling very strongly how important it is to protect them and keep them in their natural habitat.” In Tanzania, Nancy and her group enjoyed spectacular game drives and luxe accommodations, and concluded their amazing adventure with some wonderful shopping in Nairobi.
Jim & Marcia Darr, Anne Lewis, Sandy Jones, Nancy Dickins & Richard Meyer at Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
Nancy Dickins returns from Southeast Asia
We recently caught up with Nancy who had much to report about her adventures in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos with our friends at Trails of Indochina. One of the big highlights for the group was Ankor Wat. Nancy enthuses, “I loved our visit to Angkor Wat and was amazed at the size of the whole complex; the work equals that of the pyramids.” Other highlights included: riding a Vespa in Saigon to eat street food, participating in a cooking class in Hoi An (Pho, anyone?), and kayaking in Halong Bay. “It’s the best way to enjoy the beauty of those waters,” says Nancy. She urges travelers to visit Angkor Wat now rather than later because, “it’s one those places that might not survive the stress of tourism.” What’s next for the globetrotting Nancy? Group departures to South Africa and Croatia. Call us for details!
A windswept Julie at the One&Only Ocean Club.
Julie Champlin reports from the Bahamas Julie just spent a long weekend in paradise and shares these impressions: “Sol Kerzner’s luxurious investment into the Caribbean has resulted in the Bahamian paradise-intra-paradise, The One and Only Ocean Club. Despite being littered with Hollywood A-listers and dynastic heirs and heiresses, the posh and the common alike are astounded to ever see or hear another guest; the tranquility and silence are broken only by the melody of the shore and the lucky gulls who call the property home. The Ocean Club is the idyllic sanctuary for those wishing to escape the buzz of Atlantis (or their offices, for that matter!), while still allowing guests of The Ocean Club almost full-access to the Atlantis resort and casino.
The greenery-ensconced Garden View rooms in the original Hartford Wing are excellent alternatives to The Cove at Atlantis, while the Crescent Wing and Villa Residences offer guests luxury absolute. Private transfers running late into the night transport teens to Atlantis’ Crush Teen’s Club and adults to the casino and adults dance club. From the warm smiles that greet you in the morning to the chocolate covered strawberries and bubbly that tuck you in, The One and Only Ocean Club doesn’t disappoint at any turn.”

CRUISE
N E WS
Come aboard elegant ‘L’Austral,’ sister ship of the popular ‘Le Boreal,’ for a Mediterranean voyage encompassing the region’s most alluring ports of call. Go ashore in Greece, Italy, and France and enjoy a range of optional activities, along with great food, drink, and onboard entertainment from renowned jazz violinist Didier Lockwood. Other A&K Advantages include: an onboard A&K Tour Director who acts as your concierge throughout the voyage; a guided pre-cruise tour of Athens; optional shore excursions; and meeting the captain at a reception exclusively for A&K guests. If adventure cruising is more your style, may we suggest A&K’s Arctic Cruise Adventure: Norway, Greenland & Iceland. Travel on an exclusive chartered departure of the luxury all-balcony ‘Le Boreal’ to remote Arctic islands few others have seen, including the Svalbard Islands, Greenland, and Iceland’s West Fjords. If you book by September 30, 2013, you can save up to $1,500 on a 2014 Arctic Cruise!
Long time, no sea Viking longships are almost sold out for 2014 so hop to, river cruisers! River cruising has always been a great way to explore the world in comfort— and now, with the introduction of the Viking Longships, river cruising in Europe is even better. If you’re considering Russia, Ukraine or China, Viking offers the very best ships in those regions as well. Wherever the travel muse calls you, book now to take advantage of the 2014 Early Booking Discount and to get first choice of available departure dates and stateroom categories. Elegant. Stylish. Exceptionally comfortable. And long (did we mention long?) As for 2013, imagine the wonder of experiencing the holiday season in Europe on a river cruise. Each day you float into a new festive city filled with Old World charm and holiday spirit. Fall and winter bring a relaxed, unhurried, and authentic experience in the cities on the rivers of Europe. The crowds have gone, the weather is cooler, and there is magic in the air (along with the delicious scent of warm spicy glühwein and gingerbread!) In November they’ll serve Thanksgiving dinner on board all of their departures and also offer the chance to discover some local fall traditions—like carrying lanterns door to door on St. Martin’s Day. In other Viking news, 2015 will bring the maiden season of Viking Star, an all-new, all-veranda ship accommodating only 928 passengers. It’s an ocean cruise experience, focused on destinations and inspired by Viking’s loyal river passengers. And like their river cruises, it’s all inclusive!
Dreamy ships and departures Now through October, 2013, the chic 56-stateroom twin mega yachts, SeaDream I and SeaDream II will sail the French and Italian Riviera, Spain, the Black Sea, the Greek Islands, and Croatia. In November and December 2013, SeaDream I will be yachting Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama before heading to the Caribbean. From October 2013 through April 2014, SeaDream II will explore new ground as she visits Asia’s most striking locations, from the hustle and bustle of international shopping havens Hong Kong and Singapore, to the undisturbed charm and tranquility of Myanmar and New Guinea. All of these sailings sound dreamy, but our interest was particularly piqued by the aforementioned Black Sea and Costa Rica voyages. Just envision yourself surrounded by those you love (or maybe taking a break from those you love) on the deck of SeaDream I during the Thanksgiving holiday, giving thanks for 5-star service and the lush Costa Rican coastline. SeaDream vessels are like small floating boutique hotels; or, as we like to say, they’re yachts without the attitude. It’s a distinctly different experience from big ship cruising, and SeaDream’s philosophy of casual perfection runs through everything they do. With only 112 guests and a crew of 95, the level of attention and service you receive really does make you feel like you’re on your own private yacht.
CALIFORNIA
DREAMIN’
A star is reborn
( from left to right) Margaret Kemp, Cindy Holloway & Ellison Poe at the Orient Express Bellini Club meeting at El Encanto this June
It’s a recipe for a California Classic: Take one hotel with a star-studded Hollywood past, add stylish American Riviera décor with one knock-out ocean view, and combine with a sparkling sprinkling of art, California coastal dining at its very best (with the help from one very pampered cow), and seven years dedicated restoration. The result? Orient-Express’ latest creation, and first hotel on the US West Coast—El Encanto, which opened March 18th in Santa Barbara. A glamorous hideaway for almost 100 years, El Encanto sits on seven acres of beautifully preserved landscaped gardens and is an integral part of Santa Barbara’s social, cultural, and architectural heritage. Under Orient-Express’ watchful eye, the hotel has been fully restored and now consists of 92 individually designed California-style bungalows, each with its own private patio or garden. This hotel has it all: diamond dusted butterfly wings by artist Damien Hirst, an outdoor rainforest shower, a cow named Ellie whose milk is used to produce handmade cheese, and vinotherapies, which offer healing properties extracted from regional vines. So come, walk a meandering citrus-scented path and soak in the calm, peaceful vibe that made the hotel a favorite amongst Hollywood’s Golden Era elite. And, yes, we said “vibe,” because this is California.
Beachy keen Rise to surf and sunshine at Shutters, an iconic Santa Monica hotel, just grains of sand away from the water. It’s ideal for vacations, social events, business meetings, or just a weekend away. Think of it as luxury without the stuffy, or as Travel & Leisure says, a “laid-back beach house feel, with all the perks of a luxury hotel.” Or as we like to say, like your own beach house, only nicer and without sand in the sheets. At Shutters, you can be as active or as passive as you like ( just not passive aggressive). The bike path along the Santa Monica coast is renowned for roller blading, paddle tennis, jogging and biking, or just people watching, and it’s right outside the door. You can also enjoy shopping at Santa Monica Place, exploring Main Street and Montana Avenue, checking out the Third Street Promenade, or braving the Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica Pier.
Casa Del Mar-velous Whether you’re on a business trip or a romantic weekend getaway, Hotel Casa del Mar in Santa Monica is a destination poised on the edge of the ocean and at the cusp of what’s happening. Its Beach Club glamour proves that luxury and a lack of formality can peacefully co-exist. Casa Del Mar also offers the best view in town; its floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Pacific coastline will do wonders for your perspective and your soul. Enjoy Casa Del Mar’s top-rated Santa Monica seafood restaurant with panoramic ocean views and all of the day’s fresh catches, all business conveniences, a wide choice of Santa Monica’s most luxurious hotel rooms and suites, a dazzling lobby buzzing with activity, a wellness spa, a view of the Santa Monica Ferris Wheel, and the feeling of living extremely well, SoCal style. There’s a certain energy here that’s both electric and cool, and, yes, we did say “energy” because this is California.
LODGING WE A sanctuary in the Capital of Empires Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul, which debuted this spring in the Besiktas shopping district, is located in an historic tobacco warehouse in the bustling financial and entertainment district of Besiktas. The restored 1930s property presides on the Bosphorus’ European shore with 169 rooms and 17 suites (some with private terraces) and includes Shangri-La’s lauded Shang Palace Cantonese restaurant, and a spa that takes cues from its
continental crossroads location, offering reflexology, tuina (deep-tissue) massage, and other traditional Chinese treatments, as well as three hammams (Turkish baths). Shangri-La Bosphorus is the only hotel to enjoy the seven silhouettes of Istanbul from its rooms and has the biggest percentage of rooms with a view of the Bosphorus Strait, the 30-km stretch of water separating Europe and Asia. Breathtaking!

Aman amazes Simply put, Aman sets the bar to which everyone else aspires. Over 20 years ago, Aman created its flagship resort Amanpuri on a cream beach in a mature coconut grove on the island of Phuket. Aman continues to flourish with individual and unique resorts nestled in remarkably beautiful places all over the world. Common to all Aman properties— a pristine, natural location, outstanding facilities, exceptional service, and a small number of rooms to ensure exclusivity and privacy. Their spectacular new properties in Turkey (Amanruya), Greece (Amanzoe) and Indonesia are no exception. There are few places in the world that offer classical history and natural beauty in equal measure. The Aegean region of Turkey is one such place. The Bodrum Peninsula is home to Amanruya, named after the Sanskrit word for peace, Aman, and the Turkish word for dream. Amanruya is set on a peaceful hillside, offering breathtaking views of the sea and a winding pathway leading to a sheltered pebble beach. Comprising a 38-suite resort, an Aman Spa, and in the near future a number of Aman Villas, Amanzoe is Amanresorts’ third Mediterranean retreat—the Greek complement to Montenegro’s Aman Sveti Stefan and Turkey’s Amanruya. Drawing its name from the Greek word for ‘life,’ Amanzoe is situated on a hilltop close to the quaint town of Porto Heli on the east coast of the Peloponnese. The resort offers almost 360º panoramic sea views as well as a private Beach Club in a picturesque bay. Just the thought of Aman makes us sigh a collective, “Ahhhhh . . . “
A room with a zoo Allow us to introduce you to the trendiest hotel in Berlin (which just so happens to be the hottest spot on the globe these days for fashion, art, design, and music). Design Hotel “Das Stue,” which opened in December 2012, is located in the former Royal Danish Embassy, right next to the Berlin Zoo/Tiergarten (which, incidentally, is Europe’s oldest and most visited zoo). Originally constructed in the 1930s, the historic building blends elegantly and seamlessly with a modern addition and has 70 rooms and 10 suites. Other points of interest (and pride): Michelin starred Chef Paco Perez, close proximity to spectacular shopping, bike and Segway rental, easily accessible boat tours, and a mere 20 minutes from both airports. Easy to get to, hard to leave. Stue-pendous!
THE GREAT HOLIDAY GETAWAY For many people, the perfect Christmas is one spent at home, sitting around a tree, opening gifts, and quarreling with family. For many others, however, the holidays are a great time to get away, to venture to some far-flung, exotic locale or your favorite resort. If you’re thinking that Santa’s got the right idea—traveling the globe—then may we suggest the following holiday excursions on our wish list: Magical Dar Ahlam in Morocco, Hotel Goldener Hirsch in splendid Salzburg, or the ruggedly lurxurious Ranch at Rock Creek in Montana. The time to plan is nigh—let us help!
