SEA LEVEL YACHT DESIGN & ENGINEERING

Koncept CF8

Yachtualno BENETTI

BENETTI

FB 265 m/y 11/11 Benetti has recently delivered splendid project design work for M/Y 11/11 a superyacht, boasting, aesthetic, and originally functional features which are both original and denote strong personality.

F

ollowing a first test carried out on FB 252 Nataly, former 65 metre Amnesia IV initialled by Redman Whiteley Dixon, well certainly Benetti’s management has approved vertical or axe bows as Anglophones like to call them, referring to their shapes which have been specially designed to pierce waves cutting through them as is expected from every good superyacht. The same styling has gone into the making of the latest 63 metre superyacht named 11/11, which was met with great public approval but not only in the course of the latest Monaco Yacht Show held last September. The idea which something perfect deserves full marks is universally accepted and considering a range from 1 to 10, the latter being the highest, then 11 has been finally deployed to describe something which goes beyond maximum standard, whether it be in terms of opulence, intensity or any other value. So when the owner decided to call this Benetti 11/11 it was quite clear to everyone that this was not just any other yacht.

71

This time the FB265 steel and aluminium superyacht was entirely designed, stylised and engineered in house at Benetti’s. The unique aesthetics of the vertical bow receives no push from waves as happens with classic hulls, but cuts through them as it advances elegantly and more fluidly, delivering greater stability thanks also to a sporty beam of 10.80 metres. The superyacht has been significantly redesigned in comparison to the original concept in just 10 months. It now possesses four decks on a steel hull with aluminium superstructure capable of hosting up to twelve guests and sixteen crew. An extra advantage gained from this configuration of the hull results in accrued space on board ship. Crew cabins are all practically of the same size and aren’t penalised by the bow narrowing. The remainder of the extra volume is deployed as stowage space. Benetti’s technical team and designers strove to come up with solutions which could maximize sea feeling experience at both ends of the yacht. This result was achieved through detailed study and punctual development of full height see through cut glass panels, in lieu of non see through bulwarks along the deck, opposite the saloon and thanks to enormous cut glass, glazed sliding doors which shut off the upper and sundecks in correspondence to the owner’s quarters and

bridge deck’s helm controls station. The yard’s designer and technical teams dealing with the development of the exteriors and of the interior layouts on board of 11/11 well interpreted the owner’s wishes reaching an ideal result from both a technical, aesthetic and functional view point. The yacht’s four decks sport flowing power packed lines, lightened by large window like ports which deliver lots of natural light inside while the bow area along the main deck is totally uncluttered. Technical spaces as well as the areas reserved for manoeuvres are in fact fairly embedded and don’t therefore limit sea views from either the helm controls station or from the owner’s cabin which is situated full beam across forward of the main deck. 11/11’s layout is equally original. There are in fact two real and proper owner cabins: one is along the main deck and the other is situated on the upper deck, both are very large. The latter one along the upper deck, benefits from a private access leading directly to the bow end sector of the deck which hosts a swimming pool and sunbathing area totalling forty square metres. The layout’s divisions allow for generous comfortable and functionally divided spaces inside and out. The main saloon is an impressive one in terms of size, it sports a made to measure U shaped settee, a formal looking dining table with a seating capacity of twelve and

a relaxing range of greys. The sky lounge on the upper deck offers a more informal setting and atmosphere, thanks also to its attractive cocktail bar. The lower deck hosts four large suites two of which are doubles and the remaining two are twins. All suites are equipped with en suite finely decorated bathrooms with Italian marble directly chosen on site while Lalique crystal decorated made to measure taps slot neatly into lavish wash basins. An impressive foyer and stairway on the main deck are enriched by a shining white Italian marble floor and by the hand crafted stainless balustrade and shiny milled handrail. There are several options as to where to take a meal, on the main deck or on the upper one for example but also on the most luxurious one which is situated astern of the upper deck where fourteen guests can sit at a backlit “quartzite” table. An external bar made up of a block of chiselled Italian stone weighing over a ton and two symmetrical seating areas flanked by made to measure settees complete this very welcoming space. The sunbathing area is a dominant one on board, it has been set up in 15 square metres of open space in which to relax, sunbathe, and entertain. A bar in sand blasted stone furnished with seats, a thermal bath looking pool and an adjacent cooking facility enhances greater comfort to the area. The adjacent Turkish bath’s decor sports pearly mosaics with tinted quartz stones and relaxing colour therapy. The massage salon consists in white marble lining, an adjustable ‘massage’ bed and a locker for hand towels. A lot of technology has been carefully installed into the overall design and layout which

Ultra high definition Samsung curved screens have been installed in specially designed recesses to best integrate with the overall decor. Side by side to the extraordinary natural daylight which can brighten up the yacht’s interiors, scenic effects come into play after dark when lying to an anchor thanks to 46 under-waterline lights placed along both sides of the magnificent hull. A pair of Caterpillar 3512C 1,350 KW engines revealed great performance, reaching a top speed of 17 knots one knot more than what was foreseen by contract and the same can be said for the yacht’s cruising speed which was again one knot more than the 15 agreed on in the contract. At cruising speed of 16 knots the yacht’s range is of 5,000 nautical miles. The two nickel-bronze-aluminium propellers by Detra in Genoa have been designed to deliver high efficiency and low pressure drive resulting in lower than forecasted noise & vibration values stated in the contract which are fully compliant to IMO – A468 (Xll) standards. 11/11 is equipped with a Benetti built limousine custom 8 metre tender and with a Novurania 6 metre RIB. BENETTI

L’adiacente bagno turco è interamente realizzato in tessere

BENETTI SELLS 230’ CUSTOM 7TH 50M+ CONTRACT IN 12 MONTHS Further consolidating their position at the top of the Global Order Book, a position they’ve held for 16 years, in March Benetti announced the sale of a new custom build 230’ (70m) displacement yacht, designated hull number FB270, named Project 169. The sale continues the commercial success for the Italian yard and represents the 7th contract signed in the last 12months for units over 164’ (50m). Further information on the project will be released in coming months, but

from what we’ve gleaned so far the concept promises to be extremely interesting as it results from collaboration between the Benetti in-house designers and the experienced Owner with his personal design team. If our intuition serves correctly, this could be another sweet project that builds on the success of a yacht we recently viewed in Miami. Fabio Ermetto, Benetti’s CCO is extremely satisfied with this sale, commenting: “Benetti has consolidated its

reputation as a reference point for all those owners with vast experience in the yachting market, as with the Owner of Project 169 testifies. They turn to us with very special requests for specific designs, based on long standing yachting experience and never compromise in the highest levels of operation and performance. This, along with our consolidated financial strength that has developed steadily over the years, earns us the trust of clients around the globe.” www.benettiyachts.it

The Registry of Aruba Crystal Cruises The Registry of Aruba has entered an agreement to work with Crystal Cruises to develop an Aruban AOC for Crystal’s expanded brand extension Crystal Luxury Air, which will feature a B777-200LR Boeing Business Jet and a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The twin-aisle Boeing 777-200LR and Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which typically seats up to 400 and 300 passengers, respectively, will be redesigned to accommodate just 88 and 52 guests, respectively, with flat-bed first class seats and beautifully appointed lounges and bars. The planes will boast the premium luxury that discerning global travelers have come to expect from Crystal, including copious amounts of guest space, plush amenities and Crystal’s world-class service and crew. Trips will range from 14 to 28-day around the world itineraries, and include accommodations at the world’s most luxurious hotels, the finest Michelin star-level cuisine prepared by celebrated chefs and fabulous local cultural entertainment. Additionally, the aircraft can be arranged for special charters. Established in 1995, the Registry of Aruba was the first privately managed aircraft registration program rated Category-1 by the FAA, which has regulatory framework in compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The Registry of Aruba is available to private, corporate, and commercial operators with aircraft with a minimum MTOW (Maximum Takeoff Weight) of 5,700 kg as well as turbine helicopters with a minimum MTOW of 1,000 kg. Lighter aircraft with a MTOW below 5,700 kg. can also be registered in Aruba under special DCA (Department of Civil Aviation) approval depending on the type and area of operation.

Team BENETTI 206’: MY 11-11

Making her US debut at the new Yachts Miami Beach installation at the Island Gardens Deep Water Marina on Watson Island, the 206’ Benetti christened 11-11 proved to be one of the stars of the show. Afforded the opportunity of a detailed tour, INVICTUS sat down with the owner to discuss his remarkable level of personal involvement in the project, a situation that he describes as ‘beyond hands-on’ INVICTVS

Since the dawn of the 21st Century one shipyard has dominated the yachting sector in terms of their prolific output: Azimut Benetti. The publishing of the 2016 Global Order Book that provides market intelligence on new orders, yachts in construction, delivery and sales, saw the Italian powerhouse maintain its position at the very top for the 16th consecutive year. With 63 new build projects under contract, totaling almost 8,500’ (2,580m) and with an average length of 134’, the industrious activity of the Azimut and Benetti brands certainly engenders confidence in owners from whom the financial stability of a shipyard is a primary factor. In times of recent financial turmoil it is obviously not only shipyards who have come under pressure however, and with owners occasionally not in a position to complete a commissioned project opportunities arise for those in a position to pick them up and see them through to completion. Initially ordered by a Russian client who found it necessary to sell his project during build, hull FB 265 proved to be just one of 74

those opportunities. Being partially completed the dramatically reduced lead time to delivery proved to be an attractive incentive for the current owner, who counts amongst his diverse portfolio of interests a luxury property development company. Utilizing the considerable resources of his talented in-house design team and working closely with Benetti, the owner set about refining the yacht’s design, layout and interior décor to better reflect the tastes and intended use. The result? “We’re very happy with the yacht. It came out very well, has been shortlisted for some awards and came in at a price we’re happy with.” Launched in 2015, MY 11-11 features a distinctive plumb bow like that of MY Nataly (ex-Amnesia IV) a 213’ (65m) from Benetti’s FB series delivered in 2011. The inclusion of an extra deck in the arcing profile of her superstructure however has allowed MY 11-11 to offer a full owner’s deck, vast on-deck VIP suite and four guest cabins on the lower deck. Such an arrangement will no doubt make the yacht a highly attractive proposition when she does eventually

enter the charter market, though for the time being she remains private for the use of the young owner and his family. Interestingly, with the designers recognizing that young children would be onboard many ‘child friendly’ features were integrated throughout the yacht, like the soft rounded edges of the main salon’s coffee tables for example. Having placed great store in such details, we enquired if the owner intends to use the yacht extensively? “We used her over new year and in early January,

now we’re here in Miami for the show,” he replies as we sink into the comfortable C-shaped banquette that wraps around the aft section of the cockpit. “In Easter we’ll be back in the Caribbean before she heads back for the summer in the Med. I’d estimate we’ll use her between two to three months a year.” When asked if there were any plans to charter the yacht, the owner shrugs. “We haven’t really thought about it yet in truth. She won’t be available straight away as we’ll be using her extensively, but maybe

toward the back end of 2016 there will be some opportunity. I have a lot of friends who want friends who want to take the opportunity of time onboard,” he laughs, “but we’ll have to see. Yachts have played a role in the owner’s family in recent years and the experience accumulated in past projects is apparent in 11-11. “My brother, who is also my business partner, undertook an extensive project in a build, but as he spent considerable time aboard I didn’t have so much opportunity. I really had a great experience building with Benetti on this occasion; Vincenzo was so easy to work with and we’d certainly be happy to discuss building there again.” When owners hint at potential future builds we can’t help ourselves asking the obvious question: so is 11-11 available on the market? The owner gives a wry smile. “I want to enjoy this one for a while with my family,” he states, before grinning conspiratorially, “but then I do enjoy the project side of building a yacht.” The owner’s areas of commercial interest–which includes prime luxury property developments–determines he enjoys an extraordinarily direct hands-on role in the design and management of the project. “Through our business we work with some of the most renowned designers in the world,” he explains,

As with the rest of the yacht, the owner’s salon is bedecked with art: a custom Tracey Emin neon lights up the bar. “but we also have a highly talented in-house design team, so we’re able to mix and match on different projects. I must also compliment Benetti on the level of professionalism we experienced with their team during the build of 11-11, they really were very good.” The owner actually describes his input as “beyond hands-on,” and his enthusiasm for participation in every detail is obvious. “You’d be surprised at just how involved I am. Next week I visit the marble quarries in Italy to chose each individual slab for the interior of the house. For me the satisfaction comes in knowing every detail, like every piece was selected for the individual veins and how they will be positioned in the space.” During our tour of 11-11 the talent of the owner and his design team became obvious. Rather than being presented a clean-sheet for their design, they worked around the challenge of not only modifying a partially completed interior to personal tastes, but navigating the variations in cultural references.

Rather than take the expensive route of stripping out the already installed dark high gloss walnut joinery, the team cleverly lightened the styling with stainless steel and mirror inlays and fused this with art deco elements to create character. Loose furniture from brands like Yachtline, Legnoline, Dudgeon Sofas, Bill Cleyndert, Francis Russell Design (FRD), Madson Black, Yasemen Hussein, PWC, Oksana Glinska and Heirlooms can be found throughout the yacht, with items from their collections carefully selected for their practicality, comfort and contribution to the overall ambience. Meanwhile, a cleverly curated collection of artwork punctuates spaces and brings 11-11 to life. The bespoke neon by Tracey Emin that takes pride of place behind the sky lounge bar is complimented by a colorful ‘Explosion’ from Hans Kotter, while an engaging ‘Fractal’ holographic piece by the latter provides a conversation piece in the main deck lobby. Elsewhere is hung photography by Helmut Newton,

David Yarrow, Peter Lik, Alistair Taylor-Young, Adam Ferguson, Terry O’Neil, Ellie Davies and Noah Da Costa. While a bespoke hand-drawn Chronoglyph II by Ben Sack provides interest in the upper lobby stairwell. Down below one finds two large organic art works by Guido Mocafi co., inspired by the marine environment they center 11-11’s position as a floating gallery. The prolific use of polished stone that lines significant portions of the 1,181 GT volume of 11-11, contrasts deliciously with the soft buttery leathers, shagreen panels and tactile textiles. Each panel of onyx and marble was hand picked, with its color and veining specifically chosen to emphasize the area it is fitted in; like the delicate grey veined white marble of the on-deck VIP en-suite that reflects light around the voluminous space. “The problem with marble is that it stains over time, whatever any consultant advises you with regards to sealing it,” sighs the owner. “There are always new exciting materials on the

sign.” We asked about the different challenges involved in designing the interiors for residential and yachting projects? The owner answered candidly; “We’ve completed many residential and commercial projects, but we’ve designed aircraft interiors, helicopters, we can turn our hand to anything. Maybe a space shuttle would be fun,” he laughs. “Moving the materials from a private home to a yacht does present some challenges, but it is fairly straight forward, especially when compared to aircraft.” Having been afforded the opportunity to explore the many alluring charms and spaces of 11-11, we asked the owner where his favorite spot on-board would be? “It really depends upon the time of day,” he

muses. “In the morning it would probably be the sky lounge, with my daughter, watching her cartoons. Then, if I need some time to myself to relax that would be in the master suite’s Jacuzzi. When friends are aboard and we’re entertaining or having lunch, we head up to the top deck instead of the more formal dining area on the main deck… to be honest there are so many great spots on the boat and we use them all. We designed it to be that way.” As the yacht was initially commissioned by a Russian client owner, who found it necessary to surrender the project during build, we asked what details had been changed from the original and why? “Here in the cockpit was a huge crane,” the owner replies

The full beam on-deck VIP could be considered a second master; making 11-11 a very interesting proposition when she eventually enters the charter market.

point at the aft section above the transom. “It was included as the garage was intended to house a Rolls Royce Phantom. Obviously that wasn’t in our plans, so in removing the crane we dramatically increased the size of the cockpit, which is now a very social space and gets a lot of use. Also, on the upper deck, the space originally intended as a cinema we instead converted in a fantastic study which I use as my office when onboard, so that is well used too. Basically we looked at the original and adjusted it to suit our own lifestyle.” The high number of engineering ‘complications’– like fold-out balconies, shell doors and expanding beach clubs–that have come to define yachts in recent years are notable by their absence on 11-11, so we

asked the owner was this a conscious decision to reduce sophistication and increase reliability? “On my next project I’d like to have some balconies, not too many fold-outs, but balconies are really nice. My personal opinion is that you really have to get to a size where such features don’t look so out of place like they do on yachts of 200’ (60m), somewhere perhaps around 260’ (80m).” Eschewing the prevailing fashion for an aft beach club, the transom plate instead conceals a cavernous tender garage where the 11-11’s toy inventory is stowed. There one finds a 26’ (8m) custom limo tender built by Benetti. Powered by a 3-liter Mercury turbo-diesel hooked up to Mercury duo stern drives, the tender was designed to a style that references

the mother ship. For less formal transfers and fun afternoons on the water, a 19’ 6” Novurania RIB with 260hp Yanmar jet drive resides next to the limo in the garage. Unfortunately, being berthed alongside in the marina we had no excuse to make use of either, but upon departing, having enjoyed the warm hospitality of the owner and his staff, we reflected on an exceptionally well presented yacht. Having achieved marvels while working around the significant challenges of a partial completion–in terms of décor and personalizing spaces like installing bars and converting the previous gym to a pantry that serves the bridge deck’s aft terrace¬–we can’t wait to see what the owner and his team can achieve with a blank canvas!

The Chief Engineer explained to us that rather than risky innovation, proven systems were installed throughout for optimized reliability.

HE STATE OF THE YACHTING INDUSTRY is strong, or at least stronger. After two years of stable numbers following the 2013 low point, the number of new yachts reported on order or under construction — 755 yachts 24 meters and larger — is actually up. Amid a sea of change, there is a constant: The Azimut Benetti Group retains its first-place ranking with the most yachts reported under construction or on order.

The Players The cards have been reshuffled somewhat between the most productive yacht-building countries, even if the top three remain the same — Italy, The Netherlands and Turkey. Taiwan, which was lagging a bit in the past few years, has grown again, mostly thanks to Alexander Marine and Horizon. The UK, meanwhile, has slid back, as did The Netherlands (which had a record year in 2014–2015), Germany, China and the UAE; however, some of this may be due to yacht builders under strict nondisclosure agreements. The projects that builders are not able to disclose, but we know exist, are listed as “custom” instead of under the builder’s header and country. This typically affects the largest projects, which primarily means Germany and The Netherlands. While the yards are unable to officially confirm them, these projects are real and eventually will see the light of day.

Norway has claimed the 10th-place ranking from Greece thanks to two large projects building at Kleven and subcontractor work for Palmer Johnson’s SuperSport series in carbon. Palmer Johnson recently announced it was moving its operations from the U.S. to The Netherlands, but the move had not yet happened at press time. Pending the move, we listed the carbon hulls and superstructures being built for the SuperSports under Norway. Next year, they will add to The Netherlands’ numbers. INTERESTING FACTS • 755 yachts 24 meters and up under construction • Most builds in six years • 2.9 percent increase from last year • Lined up bow to stern, the GOB yachts would stretch more than 19 miles • Average size of yachts under construction is 134 feet • Orders for expedition yachts increase 17 percent from last year

Palmer Johnson’s move is one of the changes that will affect the U.S.’s ranking in the future. In fact, one of the main contradictions in this year’s GOB is what we call the American paradox. Thanks to strong order books from the Westport, Hatteras and Viking yards, the state of the yachting industry in the U.S. looks pretty healthy. But the reality isn’t so cheery. On top of Palmer Johnson’s departure, Christensen has gone through an ownership change, and recently sold Trinity is for sale again. Yet while some U.S. yards apparently struggle to keep going, the American market is currently one of the strongest, brokers tell us, unlike the Russian market. Economic sanctions against Russia and other factors, including the drop in oil prices and political unrest, continue to have a negative effect on the once-healthy Russian market. While ultra-rich Russian clients are still around, newcomers to the yachting industry have left the market for the moment. This could help explain why 2015 was a good year, but not as strong as expected,

especially on the brokerage market. The second-hand market reached 300 sales as we finalized this report on October 14, 2015, a level of sales achieved three weeks earlier the previous year on September 22.

The Big Boys In the category of yachts 250 feet and larger, orders are down just one from last year’s record high. However, 21 yachts of 100 meters (328 feet) and larger are under construction, and four were delivered in 2015. Exciting and impressive projects have already launched for an imminent delivery, such as the 468-foot (143meter) Sailing Yacht A at Nobiskrug or the 351-foot (107-meter) expedition superyacht Ulysses at Kleven. Other supersized projects scheduled for 2016 include a secretive, high-volume 492-foot (150-meter) project to be delivered by Mariotti and the largest ever superyacht in gross tons, the 512-foot (156-meter) project Omar, which Lürssen built for a repeat client.

Speaking of Lürssen, its order book continues to be impressive with no fewer than five projects over 100 meters under construction and deliveries all the way to 2019. Kleven, Oceanco and Benetti also each have at least two projects of 100 meters or larger on their respective order books.

Still in Line We’re happy to see a few pedigree yards return in this year’s GOB. For example, Burger Boat Company has received an order for a 104-foot (31.6-meter) expedition yacht, Ocea has a new 99-foot (30-meter) commuter, Otam is building a 115-foot (35-meter) tri-deck yacht and Cantieri di Pisa, under new ownership, is coming back to life, presenting two new model concepts at the Monaco show. The bulk of new orders are for yachts between 90 feet and 150 feet, a nine percent increase from last year. As far as types of yachts, expedition yachts continue to be a growing trend, while express cruiser (or open) orders are on the decline. Fewer sailing yachts are under construction, but are concentrated among a core group of yards traditionally known for building sailing yachts, such as Oyster, Southern Wind, Vitters and Royal Huisman, which are doing well with their order books. Refit activity continues to grow in every country and in every yard. Even for the most prestigious and busy builders, it has become an essential activity that provides consistent work and revenue. Feadship has completed the refit of Podium (launched by Lürssen in 2006 as Linda Lou), a first for the Dutch company as it previously only handled refits of Feadship yachts. In the UK, Pendennis continues its success story with refits, including the delivery of the beautiful classic superyacht Malahne, and a long list of projects already scheduled for 2016, including the refit of the Derecktor-built superyacht Aquila (ex-Cakewalk).

Back on Track Another positive for this year’s GOB is that many projects that were listed as “on hold” for a long time have become active projects again, meaning construction is or will be resuming soon. For instance, Metalships will complete the 194-foot (59-meter) superyacht whose construction

THE RULES & METHODOLOGY The Global Order Book was established in 1992 by ShowBoats International to provide a body of data, updated annually in a systematic fashion that shows the scope of economic activity within the superyacht industry. Each year we present a list of yachts 24 meters (78’ 8”) and larger on order as of September 1, 2015, at ship-

30 JANUARY 2016 DOCKWALK.COM

yards throughout the world. Every effort is made to ensure accurate, comprehensive data. We rigorously survey all shipyards, and each receives the same rules. Whenever possible, data is cross-referenced with other industry sources, and in many cases, is corroborated with personal visits to shipyards.

Participation in the GOB is entirely voluntary and free of charge. For a project to be included, it must be signed with a minimum 10 percent deposit received by, on or about September 1. Spec builds may be listed only if actual construction, e.g., cutting metal, hull lay-up or tooling, has begun by the same date.

started at FNM in Spain. At Mondomarine, the M54 that started a couple of years ago has been sold and will be delivered in 2017. Project Nato, a 246-footer (75meter), started by San Marco in La Spezia, Italy, will be shipped to another yard with a target completion date sometime in 2018. There are three unsold hulls at Pisa and with the yard’s new owners, we expect they’ll be completed in the near future. In Canada, Crescent Yachts, acquired last year by the grandson of the yard’s founder, is back in business with two projects that have been on hold for years and now scheduled for launch in 2015 and 2016.

The Forecast Consolidation among builders seems to be a trend and could also be the solution for the future. Mondomarine recently acquired Cantieri di Pisa. Gavio Group, with its main yard Baglietto, had already acquired Cerri in 2011, and in early 2015 added Bertram to its portfolio. In The Netherlands, Acico Yachts promises to breathe new life into the struggling Jongert yard. In China, IAG Yachts, formerly owned by an audio-visual conglomerate, has become part of Sunbird, a multifaceted boat builder founded in 2003. The GOB this year shows a yachting industry that is more compact and stronger. Most pedigree yards have comfortable order books for the coming year. At the 2015 Cannes and Monaco yacht shows, industry professionals were markedly optimistic, and so are we.

32 JANUARY 2016 DOCKWALK.COM

The Dockwalk Factor New builds launching mean more jobs for crew. Just how many? While exact numbers aren’t possible, there’s room for optimism due to the solid numbers. The Global Order Book puts the number of active vessels 24 meters and larger in the water at 9,902 as of September 2015. Estimating conservatively, beginning at the lower range of 24 meters and moving up to vessels of 100 meters plus in length, the low number estimate has potentially 38,774 jobs available in the marketplace. If you factor in the crew numbers on the higher side, the number comes in at 72,810. This number does not include the 754 vessels currently in build. If we look closely at those figures, the picture looks even brighter. According to the Global Order Book estimates, both high and low, once the in-build vessels launch over the next few years, the crew market could see between 5,086 ranging to the high estimate of 8,429 additional crew jobs. With more stringent requisites required of crew, apprentice programs and specified training in all departments continues to support new and experienced crew to fill the yacht industry’s revitalized growth. Even with the fluctuating economies, the industry appears to be on a healthy heading. Needless to say, there are plenty of boats and each boat needs crew. For a full breakdown of the new builds by yard, check out the December/January 2016 issue of ShowBoats International. DW
