The story behind this 207-foot Benetti’s auspicious name

It’s all about your senses coming alive, in what you see, touch and feel. That’s when you have the best experience of your life.
T
iming is everything. When the original owner of the 207-foot Benetti hull FB265 walked away from
the project 10 months before delivery, an opportunity presented itself, the kind the boat’s new owner has
made a living out of exploiting. “Let’s just say there was
a clear opportunity for a mutually beneficial deal to be done,” he
says when we meet on board. The British businessman had been in talks with Benetti throughout the summer of 2014 about a
new project, and when FB265 was left ownerless two-thirds of
the way through construction, he made a list. Cons: Layout was largely fixed and engineering installed to a different owner’s
specification. Pros: He’d get a brand-new boat in less than a third
of the time it takes to design, commission and build one. He spent the rest of that summer weighing it up.
“She’s only the second bluff-bowed boat Benetti has ever built,
after sixty-five-meter Nataly,” the owner says. “I was on a boat in Porto Cervo in 2014, and Nataly was there. I just kept looking at her and asked for the tender to take me around the boat. I grew to love the shape more and more. It was exactly what I wanted,
so I was sold on the exterior design of FB265. The question was
whether we could turn her interior into something which would suit our family, from a design, style and functionality point
of view.” The fit-out was about 40 percent complete when the commissioning owner dropped out, and some of his choices were a little eccentric.
“There were no bars,” the owner says, “and it was designed for
a Rolls-Royce Phantom to be kept in the tender garage! I didn’t
need any of that. The sun deck was all wrong — everything was too small, the Jacuzzi, the seating. Inside it was like a Russian tsar’s palace. I’m not saying that’s bad, but it’s not my family’s style. It
was too heavy, too classical and it was quite dark. We needed to de-wood it, basically.”
Delivery, too, was a consideration. If he bought it, he wanted it
for the tail-end of summer 2015, an aggressive schedule that had a
few people at Benetti sweating. “I lost a bit of hair,” Benetti project
manager Marco De Cosmo jokes. “But the owner is such a nice guy — it’s difficult to say no.”
The deal was eventually signed in October 2014, spurred on by
news that one or two other buyers were circling, and a delivery target was set: July 2015, giving the Livorno shipyard just 10 months to turn a palace into a home. “I had to make a quick
decision: Go for it or pull out. I was actually in Hong Kong airport on my way home from a business trip, and I said, ‘Let’s do it.’ The deal was closed at the airport,” the owner recalls. Delivery was
nudged back throughout the transformation, and FB265 emerged from the yard just weeks before the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show in September, where she was introduced to the world as 11.11.

I flew from L.A. to Pisa for a single day just to see the boat before my family got on board. I’m a perfectionist.
“If you compare the finished boat with the initial renderings we
did for the first client, you would not say they were the same boat,” De Cosmo says. Yet it’s hard to imagine she was ever anything but the monochrome masterpiece she became. Where it was
impossible to change styling left over from the first owner, such as the dark joinery throughout, it was made to look deliberate: The dark wood was offset with lighter colors to create a sort of
Deco-light interior, for instance. “We wanted that kind of look anyway,” says the owner, whose company also designed the interior. “Our home in Los Angeles is Art Deco, too.”
Splashed throughout is artwork from the owner’s collection,
including, much to his young daughter’s delight, a display of
interactive butterflies by Dominic Harris in the main salon that
flutter at your touch. “We’ve had great feedback on those,” the owner says. “I had a guy building a ninety-meter at Lürssen on board
and he said, ‘I have to have that for my boat.’ Everyone’s stealing
my ideas!” The art animates spaces that could otherwise get a bit
two-tone, and one piece stands out above all: a Tracey Emin neon
perfectly located behind the bar in the upper salon that says: “Move me.” Very close seconds, however, are works from Hans Kotter and photographers Helmut Newton and David Yarrow.
Defying the modern trend for hard, minimalist edges, the
main living spaces of 11.11 offer softness and comfort. Part of this comes through the owner’s desire to create a home on the water,
but also because it was built into the contract that the boat had to
be childproof. Curves are preferred to edges at toddler height, and the two main seating areas in the lower and upper salons cluster around coffee tables you can bounce off, or fall asleep against “while watching ‘Peppa Pig,’ ” the owner says with a smile.
It’s the kind of attention to functionality that comes from
having owned boats previously; 11.11 is the owner’s third
superyacht, after a 145-foot Benetti and a 203-footer. “I’ve made
mistakes in the past. I’ve designed stuff that looks great, but then
you sit on it. My wife told me, ‘I’m not sitting on another sofa that’s
uncomfortable,’ ” he says. “Functionality and comfort are the most important things.”
The owner’s wife was heavily involved in the design
throughout, and it was a collaborative decision to take the major step of restructuring the sun deck, the biggest job on Benetti’s to-do list once terms were signed. With the transom garage
housing a custom Benetti limo tender (the first one it’s ever built)
and RIB instead of a beach club, 11.11’s top deck is the pre-eminent leisure area. “It was our first project when he bought the boat,” De
Cosmo explains. The pool was initially placed where the seating is currently, but the new owner wanted it all the way aft, surrounded

by sunpads. “The deck was completely redesigned, destroyed and rebuilt,” the project manager says. To avoid welding and other
“hot activities” so close to delivery, the pool structure was built
in fiberglass and painted to make it blend in. Comfortable seating
and an Italian stone-clad bar were added and an intimate lounging area and kitchenette, a favorite spot of the owner and his family, replaced the former small gym. “We tend to end the day up here, with afternoon tea,” he says.
The mornings are spent around the second spa pool on board,
forward of the superb panoramic owner’s suite on the upper deck. Despite being out front and feeling a little exposed, it remains
a private area and can’t be seen from the bridge above, making it an exclusive little enclave. It wasn’t always obvious that this
would become the owner’s deck. It’s got the view, but the VIP on the main deck has the beam — all 35 feet of it. “It came down to
outside space in the end,” the owner says. “You have a boat because you’re going to spend a lot of time outside, and it’s great to see
our little baby daughter running around the front, which is all
enclosed.” It’s lucky for guests, then, who get quartered in the VIP suite, with its vast acreage encompassing a private study, walk-
in dressing room and six huge portrait windows. The rest of the
guest accommodations are on the lower deck — two twins and two doubles feeding off a central lobby. Each is dressed in the same
Art Deco style, with Italian marble in the bathrooms — personally selected by the owner’s team at the quarry — and Lalique taps.
The design throughout offers a “polycentric experience,” the
owner says. “It’s all about your senses coming alive, in what you
see, hear, touch and feel. That’s when you’re going to have the best experience of your life, and hopefully we’ve managed to achieve that with this interior.”
The exterior sparks the senses, too, and will inspire comment
wherever 11.11 sails. She’s not built on the same platform as Nataly,
but the similarities are clear, although whereas Nataly’s design
was from the boards of Redman Whiteley Dixon, 11.11’s exterior is identifiably Benetti’s work. The decks bubble up behind that long nose, which ends in a near-vertical blade. A significant spray rail
runs aft, to keep water off the decks, a common problem on boats
with such an upright stem. The captain, Vaughan Hill, is pleased, reporting engine loading of just 65 percent at her cruising speed of 15 knots. “We got her up to seventeen-and-a-half knots on the run to Monaco from Livorno,” he says. “We had a head sea, with
two-meter swells. She stayed nice and buoyant and rode over the top, rather than falling into the holes.” Not that he has to worry
about anyone getting seasick; the owner’s wife was a sufferer but
since she was treated by famous British hypnotist Paul McKenna, she hasn’t had a bout.
The benefit of that bow is more volume forward, and this has
been well-used in big chain and bosun lockers on the main deck and generous crew quarters below. The yacht runs with 16 crew currently and the happiest of all is surely the chef, whose main
There are views to die for in the upper-deck master (top), through which you gain access to the private outside space forward and en suite (right). The owner’s passion for custom-made chandeliers is evident in the lighting sculpture above the bed, made with copper-plated feathers dipped in oxidized gunmetal. Above: A marble floor brightens the central lobby.
deck workspace puts galleys of much bigger boats to shame. It’s also a superbly finished space, with — to the chef ’s delight — big windows over the water and a central island.
The owner didn’t spend a huge amount of time at the yard
overseeing the finishing of this and other spaces, relying instead
on his design team, but did make one very important visit toward the end of the build. “I flew from L.A. to London to Pisa for a
single day, just to see the boat, and went back to L.A. the next Top: The full-beam VIP on the main deck trumps the master for space. Six portrait windows let in a huge amount of light, and the cabin has its own study (above) and dressing room.
day. I wanted to see it before my family got on board — I’m a
perfectionist,” he says. As soon as it was handed over, he sneaked in some vacation time before the Monaco Yacht Show, visiting
Capri, where music mogul and friend Simon Cowell was a visitor.
“We had a nice day with Simon in Positano, and then after, headed up to Cannes, Monaco and Saint-Tropez.”
Over the winter break, 11.11 visited St. Martin, St. Barths and
the British Virgin Islands, and she plans on the Exumas next (“so
my daughter can swim with the pigs”), before heading back across the Atlantic for the start of the Mediterranean season.
It’s a trip that wouldn’t have been possible had the owner not
seized the opportunity of buying a partly built boat. The timing was auspicious, like the name of the yacht itself. The 11th day of the 11th month is the owner’s daughter’s birthday, but 11 is also
considered a “master number,” emanating all sorts of positive vibes. It’s definitely doing its job so far — doubly so.

dris Elba’s story is a classic case of overnight success that took at least a decade, but his commitment to his craft is inspirational. Playing Luther, the intense and brilliant murder detective in the TV series of the same name, made him famous across the globe, and he has gone on to play a host of memorable parts, in particular, Nelson Mandela in Long Walk To Freedom. Now there is serious talk of Elba as a contender to play the next James Bond. Regardless of what his next career move might be, we are delighted to feature the entertaining Mr Elba on our cover with an exclusive interview (pg. 14).

After the red carpet, the next best place to be seen at this week’s Cannes Film Festival is on board a flashy superyacht. For some, the massive luxury vessels docked at Cannes’ picturesque Vieux Port will be the real stars of the show, with some costing upwards of £500,000 a week to charter. In addition to private planes and sprawling villas, superyachts are the ultimate symbol of wealth when the rich and famous visit French Riviera hotspots such as Cannes, Monaco and Saint-Tropez. As the 69th film festival begins today, yachts will play host to exclusive parties or high-stakes business deals, or serve as lavish hideaways for studio executives or A-list actors and their hangers-on. Extravagant amenities include helipads, personal submarines, infinity pools, spas, bars and even Michelin-starred cuisine. For those who don’t have one of their own or haven’t arranged a charter just yet, these are some of the best superyachts available for hire in the Mediterranean this season. Scroll down for video

For those looking to impress with a massive party, the historic Christina O, which has hosted political leaders and A-list celebrities, may be the finest option. Built in 1943, glamorous 325ft superyacht was used as a World War II surplus Canadian frigate before it was bought by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1954 and transformed into a floating palace. In the 1950s, Onassis threw star-studded parties attended by the likes of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, US President John F Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. Onassis later married President Kennedy's widow, Jackie. Today, the five-deck Christina O, named for Onassis' daughter, features an elegant interior and amenities such as a bronze-edged swimming pool, Jacuzzi deck, spa, Michelin-starred cuisine and music lounge after undergoing another refit in 2001. There is accommodation for 34 guests and 38 crew, although the yacht can host 250 guests should the owner decide to throw a cocktail party at port.

CEO, Benetti Vincenzo Poerio joined Benetti in 1993, when the 143-year-old Italian shipyard had fewer than 20 vessels on the water. Today the global fleet of Benetti yachts is near 200, and 44 more are under construction. Poerio, who trained as a mechanical engi‐ neer, is always seeking the next innovation, whether it’s a new propulsion system, interior design, or hull shape. —MICHAEL
Reasons to be concerned about the mar‐ kets
VERDON I arrived at Benetti when I was 38. I had no experience with yachts. I’d worked at a military shipyard, as a hydrodynamics re‐ searcher, and at a yard that converted ships to liquid-gas carri‐ ers. My initial goal was to design complete systems. The reputa‐ tion of Italian shipyards was that they could create beautiful inte‐ riors but not functional yachts. We changed that, so now Benetti builds some of the most highly engineered yachts in the world, including the three 300-foot-plus gigayachts in our yards.

One of our most recent custom launches, the 207-foot 11.11, is a great example of where yacht design is headed. The vertical bow has many positive functions beyond aesthetics. London designers Redman Whiteley Dixon created three different interiors to give these semicustom yachts a bespoke feel. We’re now planning a series of superyachts over 180 feet. range. We’re also moving forward with innovations in propulsion. In 2007, we launched the first Azipod system on the 213-foot Am‐ brosia III. We’ve supersized this technology on our new 330foot-plus Project Zoza. Azipods are steering engine pods that minimize vibration and take up less interior space than traditional systems, and they are much more fuel efficient. They are a breakthrough, not just for Benetti but for the superyacht world.

Best of the Best 2016: Yachts | 195 Feet and Up: Benetti 11.11
Michael Verdon June 1, 2016 The art deco–inspired interior of 11.11 is among this year’s most eclectic and most attractive. Details include a backlit quartzite dining table in one of the saloons, a diamond-patterned marble floor in the central lobby, and a copper chandelier that looks like a wreath of feathers and hangs over the bed in the owner’s suite. The owner acquired this 207-footer halfway through the build process and brought in his own design team to incor-porate these and other details into the existing frame-work. The art decorating the interior includes an interactive piece by the British artist Dominic Harris. Called Flutter Wall, it’s a video panel depicting dozens of butterflies that seemingly come to life and form a kaleidoscopic swarm when you touch the screen. http://robbreport.com/paid-issue/best-best-2016-yachts-195-feet-and-benetti-1111

In addition to a suite, the owner’s deck features a hot tub and a sunning area. The main deck includes another suite that spans the yacht’s 35.4-foot beam. Four staterooms are located below deck. has many positive functions beyond aesthetics. These straight bows give more interior volume, plus they make the yacht more stable in rough oceans. On 11.11, the bow also serves as a helipad. During the recession, the yachting world nearly came to a halt. Instead of retreating, we launched six new yacht series in our Displacement Class in three years. In the last two years, we’ve also launched the Veloce 140 and Vivace 125 series in our new Fast Displacement Class. They have speed, range, and beautiful interiors. The Vivace 125 has a range of 1,250 [nautical] miles at 12 knots and can reach 22 knots. London designers Redman Whiteley Dixon created three different interiors to give these semicustom yachts a bespoke feel. We’re now planning a series of superyachts over 180 feet. It’s a game changer, because it will be a semicustom series in what has always been a custom size range. We’re also moving forward with innovations in propulsion. In 2007, we launched the first Azipod system on the 213-foot Ambrosia III. We’ve supersized this technology on our new 330-foot-plus Project Zoza. Azipods are steering engine pods that minimize vibration and take up less interior space than traditional systems, and they are much more fuel efficient. They are a breakthrough, not just for Benetti but for the superyacht world. Boats and Yachts
