ROBB REPORT INDIA OCTOBER 2015 THE FIRST BENETTI Veloce 140 (+39.0584.3821, www.benetti yachts.it), the initial launch from the Italian builder’s new Fast Displacement series, is ideal for owners with active lifestyles. It features two pools—one on the sun deck and a deeper one on the upper deck—a beach club at the transom, and a full-beam gym at the bow. The gym is equipped with multiple treadmills, an assortment of free

weights, and a retractable side terrace that allows fresh air and natural light to enter the space. The yacht, which debuted at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last autumn, has an unusually versatile upper deck: All the furniture can be easily moved to create a large indoor and outdoor space where guests can mingle. The Veloce 140 benefits from a displacement-to-planing hull,

which provides the fuel efficiency of a full-displacement hull and enables the high speeds of a semidisplacement hull. It can cruise at 12 knots for 1,250 nautical miles and travel smoothly at speeds as fast as 21 knots. The first example of the Veloce 140 is configured to accommodate 12 guests in six cabins. The model’s starting price is available upon request. —DANIELLE CUTLER

HAPPENINGS Story by Steve Davis; photos by Steve Davis and Thierry Ameller

Warming up to Success ■■■■ FLEECES AND COATS WERE THE ATTIRE at the Tombolo Talasso Resort for the 16th Azimut-Benetti Yachtmaster, but inside, more than 90 captains, surveyors, engineers, and owner reps kept warm reconnecting with old friends and new. Fortunately, that first cold, cloudy early February day primarily was spent inside where Alessandro Gallifuoco, Benetti’s quality and after sales manager, welcomed the group with a “state of the company” presentation, which included the progress (and pride) of four new yachts larger than 90 meters.

Meeting to keep the Benetti community connected, this year’s event, themed “Superyachting on a Global Scale,” was the second and largest of three Yachtmaster events held this season (the first in Asia last November and the third in South Florida this April). Implementing a refined version of speed dating, captains gathered in small groups, and Benetti service partners had about two minutes at each table to brief captains on new products as well as the advantages and support their company provides — a commitment from Benetti to show the importance of the relationship between the yard, its captains, and its partners. Part of that commitment is to provide the group a platform to discuss important issues affecting the industry, and workshops were held daily focusing on the pressing issues of VAT, environmental standards, insurance, and crew management. For example, when chartering in Italy, a pro-rated 22 percent VAT is due based on the number of days spent in Italy if the place of delivery is in a non-EU country, but none is due if delivery is in another EU country. With changing environmental standards, RINA

has developed the Green Plus Yacht certification that addresses 12 different pollution sources with solutions to prevent them. On the insurance side, whether in a refit, experiencing an incident at sea, or a mishap in the harbor, the importance of ensuring all aspects of the yacht and its operation are insured couldn’t be stressed enough, especially keeping coverage current when the yacht transitions to different cruising grounds, undergoes repairs, has equipment changes, including toys, or a transfer in ownership. The most animated discussion, however, involved crew management, and with all the personalities involved, there’s no doubt the captain’s leadership style makes a big difference. Whether using psychometric testing to understand crew or becoming a better delegator, the captains got a little boisterous, but it was all with good intention and in good humor, most agreeing that it’s a never-ending story. Fortunately, the group wasn’t locked down in the resort’s conference room each day. Thursday and Friday mornings started off with more exercise than was necessary. The days turned brightly sunny with blue skies along the Etruscan Coast of Italy between Livorno and Piombino, and the chill wrapped the athletes as they jogged, biked, and ran a ninja warrior obstacle course in the “Illegal Olympics,” the early morning frost making

the inflated obstacles more like a slip-n-slide. Hilarity was the norm as teams navigated the bouncy balls, surfboard, spider web, and swinging demolition ball. But that was only half the fun. Those who would face the “Olympics” on day two headed to the race track, donning overalls and helmets as they snuggled into their low-rider go-karts to whiz around the course. Spinouts, bumping, thumping, and rubber tire fragments spit out onto the track. The competitive spirit was strong in both events, keeping teams in hot pursuit for supremacy. When the dust had cleared and the sweat had evaporated, the Red Team claimed victory in the Illegal Triathlon and Niki Travers Tauss, CEO of Valetta Superyachts, sped across the go-kart finish line with the fastest time. After an afternoon of massages, spas, and therapeutic pools to soothe the muscles, Yachtmaster colleagues gathered for a celebration dressed with a Roaring Twenties flare. From Charlie Chaplin to stylish flappers, guests showed their 1920s best, enjoying an exquisite dinner followed by desserts, cigars, and entertainment, including a performance by violinist Saule Kilaite. Lifted by a successful three days of camaraderie and fun, the Benetti Yachtmaster once again demonstrated that through communication and respect, growth and innovation will flourish. DW
