Panthera really does epitomise all the positive characteristics of the aluminium 500 series: a successful and well tried-and-tested technical combination brilliantly honed to produce a solid yet light yacht with an optimised hull that delivers both super performance and a long range. The changes in the rules introduced in recent years meant that interior layouts had to change but Benetti is already working on alternatives that will allow us retain the series’ distinctive exterior lines.

clients that love the kind of speed and sporty lines Benetti wasn’t renowned for until recently.

Security on Board

WATCHING OVER YOU At the recent Azimut-Benetti YachtMaster event, TSR spoke to a number of captains about what they perceive as real, modern-day threats to the safety of their owners, guests and crew.

S

ince the emergence of Somali piracy as a risk to commercial ships transiting shipping routes, the popular discourse in maritime security has been protecting one’s vessel from the spectre of attack. This usually comes in the form of a mercenary chaperone when negotiating high-risk areas. However, not only have the number of attacks fallen in recent years, the proximity of pirates to superyachts and their well-trodden cruising grounds is not as close as we were led to believe when the maritime security market first began to spike.

In truth, the threat of piracy is not one a superyacht owner should lose too much sleep over. However, as an extremely valuable asset, and one that carries a number of similarly valuable assets, a superyacht does present an attractive proposition to opportunistic and organised criminals. With this in mind, we asked a selection of captains at the Benetti YachtMaster what their primary security concerns are when operating a superyacht.

Security on Board

CAPTAIN ALEX GREENSON 47M PANTHERA (BENETTI FB 502) The yacht I captain is private and less than 50m, so although we operate with a version of a self-written ‘mini ISM’, we are not bound by a regulated set of procedures with a DPA or even a watchful management company in the implementation of ISPS. We do it all ourselves within the requirements of Class and Flag. Security for the yacht that I manage is very straightforward. The yacht stays in Ibiza for the majority of the time, at the same marina. During the low season, when the owner is not using the yacht, we run a normal rotation with at least one person on board at all times – the watch stander. I would like to say more, but too much information constitutes a breach in the security practices that I preach. The biggest thing that I emphasise to the crew on board is not to become complacent with our situation. Winters in Ibiza are very different from the summers. Just the same, I continually encourage the crew to maintain a vigilant watch and an awareness of unusual events and personalities near the yacht’s mooring position at the marina. During the summer season, when the owner and his guests are using the yacht, we maintain the same vigilance, with an emphasis on maintaining a strict policy of confidentiality. As captain I am very strict about not disclosing the identity of the owner to anyone. The traffic inside the marina increases dramatically during the summer, and many people want to know who owns the yacht.During the summer months the size of the crew increases. Before new or seasonal crew start on board they must sign a non-disclosure agreement. This agreement serves to protect the owner during a crewmember’s employment and after it has ended. An article written by Mark Hookham in The Sunday Times, entitled ‘Yachties at risk as ISIS takes to the sea’, stated: Luxury yachts and other shipping in the Mediterranean could come under attack from heavily armed ISIS fighters using speedboats to conduct attacks from the Libyan coast, a former Royal Navy Admiral warned recently. Rear Admiral Chris Parry said he feared the ‘super-rich’ could be singled out as part of a piracy campaign that would threaten shipping from Gibraltar to Greece.

I continually encourage the crew to maintain a vigilant watch and an awareness of unusual events and personalities near the yacht’s mooring position at the marina.

Yachting, any leisure activity, is going to be under threat,’ he said. ‘If I were the likes of the super-rich I would be a bit concerned about my physical security.’ ISIS pirates would pose a greater danger than the Somalis, who have attacked shipping in the Indian Ocean, because they are better armed. ‘You are going to get them turning up with surface-to-air missiles. Helicopters are going to come down if you are not careful,’ Parry said, adding that ISIS would have an ‘endless supply’ of fighters and weapons from Syria and Libya. This is pretty scary stuff. It just goes to show you that now more than ever is not the time to become complacent about the yacht’s security. I let my crew know this again and again. J

Security on Board

CAPTAIN LUCA MOSCA 56M M/Y ANNAEVA (BENETTI FB 234) My priority is always my owner, his family and guests. Even if a superyacht is considered a small company, we don’t produce incomes, but rather costs, and we manage what is most important for the owner: his spare time, holidays and well-being. Security is a paramount part of this package. We conduct a risk assessment of the areas we intend to cruise and then consider and implement different security procedures. A discreet escort service, provided by trained crewmembers during guests’ leisure activities on shore, such as transfers and excursions and even during water sports activities, is always a good and effective precaution. Choosing a proper agent that has reliable and verified collaborators – drivers, guides, beauticians, etc. – is another very important asset. For ISPS-compliant yachts there are clear instructions to follow, according to the security level on board. Regular patrols, strict control of access when moored and at anchor, and permanent watches at the gangway or swim platform are the best precautions.

Alcohol and drug abuse are serious problems, and very common in the yachting community. There are other concerns, however, that have to be addressed on charter yachts. Possession and use of drugs on board by charter guests and incorrect declaration of the currency carried are the most common and difficult to manage. It’s always tough to make guests understand that even if they are spending hundreds of thousands of euros or dollars on chartering a superyacht they are not allowed to break the rules and the law. Another concern is related to crewmembers’ commitment both on board and off. Alcohol and drug abuse are serious problems, and very common in the yachting community. A background check is sometimes not effective or thorough enough to assess who we are recruiting on yachts, and the captain is often the last one to be aware of what’s happening down in the crew areas. Watching our crewmembers, listening to rumours on board and regular cabin inspections are all good measures. My security concerns are focused on everything that can affect the correct, regular and peaceful activity of the yacht and its use by the owner and guests – and not forgetting crew – in respect of procedures and international laws.
