THE AMBROSIA SEQUENCE Taiwanese-born tycoon Ambrose Young owns Hong Kong’s largest superyacht, the Benetti-built Ambrosia. It’s the third in an ambitious series, and a fourth is now on the cards.

n first meeting, Ambrose Young comes across as a genial man, seemingly free from concern. He laughs with a wheezing cackle. He is also extremely low-profile. Little is known about his company, Young Brothers Holdings, and there appears to be no photos of Young online. Yet, for years, he has been the owner of the largest resident superyacht in Hong Kong, the 65-metre Ambrosia. Wedged next to Lady Candy, another Benetti superyacht, which is owned by Hong Kong businessman Alan Chuang, Ambrosia is so big that it barely fits into a berth at its usual location at the Hong Kong Gold Coast Yacht and Country Club in Tuen Mun. Looking at it from the club, it almost seems so wide as to be pushing its dockside neighbours away. Young likes to joke that a special dredging operation had to be conducted just so he could fit his superyacht into its berth. At the moment, a low tide prevents Ambrosia from leaving the marina. On board, Young points to a special high-power line that he paid for to have installed at the marina, just to service the electronic systems aboard his yacht.

Grand gestures and big toys are calling cards for Young. Normal superyachts carry the logo of the yard on the side of the superstructure; Ambrosia (the third in a series with that name by Benetti) instead has Young’s own personal coat of arms. A single angler’s chair is perched at the back. Young isn’t into fishing so much as taking in the view when the yacht is at sea. Young, who was born in Taipei, spent time in the Taiwanese navy as an officer in the early 1960s, before leaving in 1963. A portrait of himself as a young naval officer hangs in his private study aboard Ambrosia. But it would not be the shipping business in which Young made his fortune. In the 1960s, Young started working in the aviation business, ultimately becoming the Asia representative for aircraft makers in Europe and the US. During that time, British airlines began to sell their propeller airplanes and replace them with jet aircraft. Young found himself selling off propeller aircraft to new airlines in Asia. Acting as the sole representative for companies such as Boeing is no longer possible, Young says. “It’s all G2G [governmentto-government] now,” he says, calling himself a “strategic adviser” with a laugh. Young retains an intense interest in aviation. Young Brothers Aviation, which is owned by Young Brothers Holdings, owns a flight school in Australia and a substantial stake in TAG Aviation Holding, which in turn owns TAG Aviation, one of the world’s biggest corporate jet service providers and the owner of Farnborough Airport in England. Here, business travellers to the UK can avoid the congestion of London Heathrow Airport. According to Young, it is the largest private jet airport in the world. He notes proudly that the facility even has its own hotel.

Through his part interest in TAG Aviation Holding, Young is a business associate of Mansour Ojjeh, who, incidentally, launched his own superyacht, the 72-metre Kogo built by Alstom, in 2006 – the same year that Ambrosia was launched.

A LANDMARK DEAL

04 05

By the 1980s, Young was well-known enough to be approached for a deal on a superyacht. He ultimately wound up declining to purchase a 100-foot Azimut yacht. But in the process, he met Paolo Vitelli, now chairman of the world’s biggest yacht builder, the Azimut-Benetti Group, which owns Benetti, a legendary superyacht yard. At the time, Vitelli was trying to rebuild Benetti, which had been bankrupted in the early 1980s by its efforts to build what was then the world’s biggest superyacht – the 86-metre Nabila. That yacht, launched in 1980, was built for Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. According to superyacht designer Donald Starkey, quoted in a 2010 article in Superyacht World, “The interior and the exterior [of Nabila] were responsible for opening the eyes of potential owners, showing them what was possible when money was no real object.” But Benetti was left with some of the costs for the yacht. Young decided to go into business with Vitelli, taking a 25 per cent stake in the new Azimut-Benetti Group, after Vitelli acquired Benetti. “Vitelli was in trouble; I saved his life,” says Young with a laugh. Young ordered the first new steel-hulled superyacht, a 40-metre, which came out of the Benetti yard. But

Vitelli found another buyer, so Young let that one go and instead purchased a 45-metre – the first Ambrosia. Young got François Zuretti, who got his start by designing Middle Eastern palaces in late-’70s (and later worked on one of the king of Morocco’s palaces), to design that yacht. By then, superyachts had become popular among wealthy Arabs, who cruised the Mediterranean. After selling his first yacht, Young recruited Zuretti for his second Ambrosia, and then his third. Young sold his share of the Azimut-Benetti Group to Vitelli in the 2000s. According to Young, Azimut-Benetti was revitalised as a result of his input. “Without me, there wouldn’t be Azimut-Benetti today. I told him [Vitelli] how to change the way of marketing, how to shake up their marketing department,” says Young. He adds that he never acts as a broker for Benetti, but the possibility of ordering a fifth superyacht from Benetti is exciting. “Imagine – five in a row! It’s not small, it’s historical; it’s a big marketing tool. Besides, everyone in the yacht industry knows my name!”

PALACE ON THE SEAS

Young seems to regard Ambrosia as more than a home away from home, intimating that he prefers being on board to being on land. He has cruised around Southeast Asia and Europe extensively. “Hong Kong has a lot of rich guys, but they have small ones [superyachts], including Li Ka-shing,” Young says. “They are only in the yacht for the weekend. I use the yacht as a relaxation place. With a big yacht on the high seas, I have the sky and water together, just sitting here. You have natural meditation; you need that peace,” says Young. The vast interior of Ambrosia by Zuretti feels like a palace, and a very personal one at that. The main deck lounge features a piano bar that borders onto the main dining area. The dining room has photos of Young at black-tie events with US Republican luminaries including Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush. Sliding glass doors separate the dining room from the saloon, which is etched with designs of the Copernican universe. Further forward is Young’s private office space and then his master bedroom. What makes the interior of a superyacht special is the use of rare materials. Zuretti started developing an Art Deco style in the first Ambrosia, using cherry wood, teak, ash wood and burl. Other materials include goatskin, parchment, mother-of-pearl, galuchat (sharkskin), bamboo, buffalo hide, granite, onyx, marble, and gold and silver leaf. The main lobby features a grand staircase connecting six decks, from the crew mess and engineering areas at the lowest deck, to the sky lounge at the upper deck. A large piece of panel art depicts classic sailing vessels from the European Age of Exploration.

THE CEILING [OF THE STARGATE ROOM] USES HUNDREDS OF FIBRE OPTICS TO RECREATE THE STARS OF THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN HEMISPHERES 06

The upper deck is home to the one-of-a-kind Stargate Room, which bears the imprint of Young’s obsession with aeronautics. A circular dining room faces a deck looking back over the sea. The ceiling uses hundreds of fibre optics to recreate the stars of the northern and southern hemispheres, with a panel driven by electric motors and linked to the yacht’s GPS systems to move it in relation to Ambrosia’s position in the ocean. The floor features a bas-relief of the moon’s surface made out of glass. On the walls are photos of astronauts. On a shelf next to a table is a gold model of a Chinook helicopter. Young’s love of engineering reflects his lifetime dealing in aviation. His yacht was one of the first (alongside the Kogo) to feature Azipod propellers. Most boats feature a shaft and a propeller to enable their forward thrust. Azipods, which in 2006 were a very new

06 The Stargate Room on the upper aft deck

technology for superyachts, are self-contained pods with propellers driven by electric motors. The pods can swivel around 360 degrees, which means there’s no need for a rudder. It is also a more fuel-efficient means of propulsion over longer distances.

SUPERYACHT PIONEER

Young is quick to take credit for developments in the Asia superyacht scene, in part due to his willingness to pioneer the ownership of such a large boat. But further changes are afoot. Taiwan is starting to emerge as a yachting hub. Six marinas have been built by the government and locals have begun buying yachts – one billionaire recently purchased a 45-metre sailing yacht, due to be delivered this year, says Julian Jesson, Taiwan manager for Simpson Marine.

Hong Kong’s wealthy are also in on the superyacht act – but while Taiwan has been making life easier for yacht owners, in Hong Kong, it’s getting more difficult. Young notes that the local Marine Department has now made it impossible for foreign-registered yachts (such as Ambrosia) to sail around in Hong Kong waters, unless it’s to a shipyard for maintenance. Perhaps it is for this reason that on the same day that Young meets with a representative from Benetti to go over the layout for the fourth Ambrosia, he lays out his plans for a two-year world tour. Young will travel from Hong Kong to his old cruising grounds in the Mediterranean, and then wants to cross the Atlantic and enter the Caribbean, passing Panama to cruise the South Pacific. Perhaps by the time Young gets back to Hong Kong, the next Ambrosia will be ready.

■■■■ YOU KNOW THE SAYING…THE ROAD IS LONG, WITH MANY A WINDING TURN. Oh, and let’s not forget the bumps, too. But when said road culminates at the doors of the Spa Boutique Terme di Saturnia in Tuscany, famous for its thermal springs, it just might be worth the two-hour trek from Rome. While the hot spring’s sulfurous eau de parfum might be slightly overwhelming when you first step inside the hotel, the nose grows accustomed to it soon enough — and we had ample evidence that the captains found the waters rejuvenating.

The Azimut-Benetti Yachtmaster kicked off this year’s event in Saturnia, Tuscany, from February 4–6. For its 15th year, it took a slightly new turn with its mix of entertainment and education, adding two new events to the roster. One put the media, including Dockwalk, in the interviewer’s seat to shine the spotlight on the captains’ perspective, or 22 APRIL 2015 DOCKWALK.COM

in my case, on the owner’s representative, for insight into their experiences during all project phases. Andrew North discussed Benetti’s Project Zaza, its Passenger Yacht Code vessel scheduled for delivery in 2018, including the challenges of his role and the build during the interactive session. Afterward, the attending captains dispersed for

their choice of six workshops, the second new concept. Each workshop was led by a moderator with a deeper focus on various topics, including upcoming IMO regulations, port state control, the MLC, VAT in Europe, hiring crew and more, in a smaller, more hands-on setting. But before the serious stuff started each day, there was fun to be had, as the participating captains were divided into three teams (red, white and green) for the morning’s activities: building the perfect marina (with Lego), crafting a (floating) vessel from cardboard and testing out their (almost nonexistent) golf skills at the driving range. My team, the White team, thoroughly

enjoyed playing with Lego. We crafted a fantastic marina with all the amenities a captain could dream of: marina office with helipad, fuel dock, Travelift, mobile crane, ISPS security, paint shed, bar, crew gym, high-speed Internet access, airport shuttle, P&M semisubmersible vessel, tennis court with covered stand, pool and environmental waste disposal with 10-meters depth throughout (and yes, there were berths). But, alas, ours was not the winning design, and the Red team ultimately was crowned the victor. Our next attempt at a win was at the driving range. You know what they say about captains and golf — that they have all that time on their hands to hone their

golf games? Well, that really wasn’t evident. Shockingly, the White teams fortuitously landed all the talented golfers, and both White team A and B claimed victory. From the golf, it was all down to the captains’ design and building skills in the cardboard boat-building contest. While cardboard might not be coming to a yard near you anytime soon as a prized material, all teams’ designs managed to stay afloat — until they were unceremoniously ripped apart by their opponents. Even so, it was an impressive show of design skills (and tape) all round. Apart from the fun and games, any Italian event is known for its fabulous food

and drink. This was no exception. From the themed Roma Caput Mundi dinner under the stars alongside the thermal spa — yes, that was a Roman Centurion in line for the buffet — to the choreographed perfection of the last supper that ended with the bang of fireworks, the food left nothing to be desired. The fireworks were spectacular, as were the synchronized swimmers who put on quite a show in the hot springs. Before the evening was lost to the dance party, partygoers set paper lanterns off to blaze in the night sky for quite the spectacular scene. We’re looking forward to seeing how Azimut-Benetti manages to top this event next year. DW DOCKWALK.COM APRIL 2015

“It goes straight down under the water, then straight back, so it cuts through the water like a blade,” says the superyacht’s American captain, Kelly Esser. Delivered in late 2014, Cheers 46 is Hull No. 1 of the Italian shipyard’s Veloce 140 series, as well as the largest model in its Fast Displacement range to date. The superyacht’s wave-piercing bow is a key part of Benetti’s new, patented D2P hullform, which combines impressive performance for a displacement hull with improved fuel economy and increased range. “The owners wanted speed and range, and this yacht offered both,” says Esser, who is fleet captain for the new Benetti Veloce 140 and the family’s other boat, an Azimut 116. In fact, Esser reports that Cheers 46 beats Benetti’s projected top speed of 21 knots by as much as five knots, and has a cruise speed of 21 knots. “It’s faster than it was designed to be,” he says.

He attributes the superyacht’s extra velocity to its unique layout, which was specified by the owners. They asked Benetti to move the Veloce 140’s main-deck master stateroom to the lower deck and replace it with a custom gym. The new, full-beam fitness area boasts a foldout balcony. Guests who get hot working out can take a cold plunge in the superyacht’s foredeck pool. Another area where the owners gave special attention was the teak “beach” area formed when the crew opens the hinged transom. This premium party platform has an L-shaped bar with TV, refrigerator, icemaker, sink, Weber grill and huge portable sun pads. “This is exclusively a guest area,” Esser says. Just forward is a large tender bay with overhead davit where the Williams jet boat tender, two personal watercraft and dive tanks are stored. Incorporating a tender bay in the yacht’s design opened up room on the flybridge for a large Jacuzzi and sunbathing area, but it also robbed space from the engine room. Still, the well designed, if compact, engine room provides good access to the main engines, gensets and other equipment. The owners also moved the captain’s cabin to the lower deck crew quarters and claimed the stateroom aft of the wheelhouse for a VIP guest suite. These layout changes happened before Esser joined the Cheers 46 program. Esser, who grew up in Fort Lauderdale crewing aboard the famous Jungle Queen party boat and working for Cape Ann Towing & Salvage before getting into yachts, served as build captain for the last year of the Cheers 46 project. “I laid out the bridge,” he says, showing off the wheelhouse with its arsenal of the latest electronics, including a Böning yacht monitoring system. He spent four months in Italy overseeing the final stages of the project at the Benetti shipyard in Viareggio. He was particularly impressed when the shipyard sent a captain, electrician, engineer and plumber to ride portto-port on the superyacht’s two-week maiden voyage in the Med. “They made sure the owners didn’t have any hiccups in their trip. If something broke, they fixed it on the spot,” he says. “When we got back to the shipyard, we had a very small list.” DW
