BENETTI 140 VELOCE

IN A RAPID WAY

Veloce (pronounced va-lo-cha), is the Italian word for rapid, or in a rapid way. It is a term forever used by Italian sports car manufacturers to determine their fastest and most desirable models; machines such as Alfa Romeo’s classic Giulia Sprint GT Veloce and Lamborghini’s monstrous Murcielago Super Veloce. It is a word synonymous with great power, high speed and sleek, exotic looks. This Benetti 140 also wears is Veloce name proudly. It is the first of Benetti’s Fast Displacement series and the yacht spearheading the shipyard’s new D2P (Displacement to Planing) hull. We caught up with her earlier this year, eager to learn more about the innovations, hidden beneath her Stefano Righini designed exterior. By Steve Chalmers Images courtesy of Benetti

nnovation has always been a major part of Benetti’s charm. The Italian shipyard creates some of the most stylish yachts on the water and combines them with state of the art marine architecture, high tech electronic-trickery and the mechanical flair Italian engineers are so well known for. The Veloce 140’ is typical of the shipyard, mixing striking lines, total luxury and a huge performance to create a yacht that performs superbly. However, the 140’s high-performance has not happened by chance; every detail has been requested by the Owner, a trusted Azimut|Benetti customer, someone fully aware that the shipyard would listen to his every requirement, and deliver on every promise.

The Owner wanted a yacht that could reach a heady top speed of 26-knots and cruise at a more than adequate 21-knots. He also requested space, luxury and a low draft to enable him to cruise his favourite areas. Benetti’s answer was the Veloce 140’, a yacht showcasing so much of the Italian shipyard’s knowledge – a yacht that truly is, ground-breaking. The 140’ is the first yacht of the Benetti Fast Displacement series. She features a new Displacement to Planing (D2P) GRP hull, which was designed by Pierluigi Ausonio Naval Architecture Studio with the technical assistance of the Azimut Benetti Research and Development Center. As its name implies, the

D2P hull can cruise as at 12-knots in displacement mode and then make the transition to 20-knot planing speeds, efficiently and quickly. Another technical aspect of the 140’s hull is her wave-piercing bow bulb. This was the result of countless hours of testing, during which, many differing hull forms were tested and discounted by the naval architects. To match her internal innovations, Benetti turned to Stefano Righini, for the exterior styling, while the interior was conceptualised by the UK’s Redman Whiteley Dixon, in collaboration with the Owner’s designer. The British team came up with the theme of Air, Land and Sea, with

the 140’ following the Air theme, using the yacht’s glazing to create a light and airy feel. For the décor, Redman Whiteley Dixon employed their knowledge of designing sailboat interiors to give the 140 a bright and spacious ambience. Working alongside the renowned international architect Joao Armentano, they utilised a number of exotic materials and woods, such as light gray TAY and slate gray TABU for the flooring, with decorative elements, such as the silver lacquer finish and finished the ceilings in alcantara. The 140’s interior layout is also intriguing, as on the main deck, instead of a master suite, the Owner requested

a fully equipped gym – so much for using your yacht to take things easy. A drop-down balcony adds to the open feel of the gym, which is itself, fitted with Technogym’s Personal Line. This top-level equipment has been installed into a number of well-known superyachts, as well as being placed in the Monaco Yacht Club Wellness Centre - It’s just as well the 140’ features a massage room and enough space to flop down and chill out. Also on the main deck, you will find a large formal dining area with seating for twelve and a huge living area that extends outdoors, highlighting the 140’s ‘Air’ theme. Heading down, the lower deck is dedicated to accommodation and

Light, both in its natural form and in the soft hues of the 140’s materials, plays a key role in the generating the Benetti’s positive ambience. Whether the Owner is dining on the main deck, or relaxing on the sundeck sofas, he will find peace in the form of rich luminosity

features an Owner’s suite, and five guest cabins, sleeping a total of 12 people. The crew has four cabins, sleeping eight. If the gym was meant for breaking a sweat, then the 140’s sun deck is all about rest and relaxation. Guests have the options of chilling-out in the hot tub or lazing about on the U-shaped sofa, drink in hand, under the blue sky. Of course, if it’s all too much, you can open the bimini, sit at the bar and watch your favourite film on the flat screen TV. It’s a hard life. The upper deck is again Air-themed and features a selection of freestanding furniture. This can be arranged as the Owner wishes, or even removed completely to create a number of larger entertaining spaces. A majestic, sixteenplace dining table can be found aft, with the bridge forward. The spacious foredeck features U-shaped seating, a table and another pool, however, water lovers will most likely spend their time on the huge beach club, which can be furnished with a range of sunpads. As regards the technological heart of 140, Benetti has fitted two MTU 12V 4000 M93L 3500hp engines in to the confines of her hull. These are the largest powertrains ever fitted at the Viareggio shipyard, and the reason the 140’s D2P hull can reach her target cruise and top speeds. Innovative, stylish with great performance, Benetti’s 140’ rightfully lives up to her Veloce status. ı

The 140’s huge beach club can be quickly furnished with a range of sunpads and features a dedicated bar to keep sun worshippers fully hydrated

LiviNg off The LaND owning a yacht is now pRofitable. By Andre Frois “With the Euro in a trough, this is one of the best times to buy a boat,” comments Edward Tan. The Director of Hong Seh Marine’s sweeping statement has us listening. Since majority of yacht builder shipyards are in Europe, particularly in Italy and the Netherlands, the plunging Euro might render a simple boathouse as affordable as the six or seven figure sum that a land vehicle commands. “Singapore is surrounded by water and the ability to use yachts in South-East Asia has grown a lot in the past five years. 20 years ago, if you owned a yacht, you would be sunk! However, immigration and security have improved recently, because people now see the recreational value of yachts, beyond that of commercial use.” Tan’s company Hong Seh Group’s first chance foray into the boating industry occurred when a few customers including Malaysian royalty asked for yachts in the late 1980s. Tan divulges that he came to enjoy the sea, which led to Hong Seh creating a “1800-” concierge service, which takes care of everything from cleaning the inside and outside of boats, to assisting with the planning of a holiday. Hong Seh currently works in partnership with the Ferretti Group’s various yacht brands like Riva, CRN and Pershing. “Destinations that yachts can sail to from Singapore include Phuket in Thailand, Batam and Bintan in Indonesia, as well as Rompin, Tioman and Rendang in Malaysia. Terengganu’s Monsoon Cup yacht race is now heavily promoted. The Southern Islands are short 20-minute jaunts from marinas like ONE°15, Keppel and Raffles,” he encourages. “Similar to cars, a yacht’s rate of appreciation and depreciation is all about brand value,” observes Gianluca Poerio of Sand People Communication, which specialises in media relations for luxury yachting. Although the value of a yacht falls upon sale, certain brands of yachts sustain high values after purchase, and in uncommon cases such as celebrity ownership, provenance and rarity, command a higher resale value than its original buying price. “If you have a very good internationally renowned brand like Benetti or Ferrari, a yacht or car will still be very valuable after years and years.”

“The life cycle of a yacht depends on the material with which the yacht was built. If we talk about fibreglass or aluminium, we can assume a life cycle between 25 and 30 years, while steel yachts are the longest running and may have a centenary life cycle,” discloses Andrea Pezzini, CEO of Floating Life, a full-service international yacht charter, sales, concierge and management firm.

He further elaborates, dispelling misconceptions that yachts have a limited number of serviceable years like cars. “Yachts are typically worth 20% to 25% of their original value in the first year, 10 to 15% in the second, 5 to 10% in the third, and 5% in following years,” reveals Fabiomassimo Discoli, Sales Manager of the Ferretti Group. “Annual maintenance costs for yachts below 30m include berthing, insurance, standard maintenance and paying crew, which is normally around 10% of the yacht’s purchase value. For yachts above 30m, maintenance can cost as little as 5%.” Regarding the advantages and disadvantages of investing in a yacht, industry veteran Pezzini weighs in that there are none, explaining, “because someone who owns a yacht does it for passion and not for a ‘safe haven’ asset or in order to get huge revenues. However, thanks to new forms of business in yachting, such as fractional ownership and chartering, one can recover the original investment by generating rental profit through the yacht.” In the example of a €1.8m yacht: If its annual maintenance costs €200,000 and the profit of chartering it out for one week is €130,000, the owner would have paid €3.4m over the course of eight years, but would only have to charter his yacht out for 27 weeks within these eight years to cover costs. “Fractional ownership is new in Asia but not new in Europe,” remarks Tan. “People who are not ready to buy a boat can come together to pay a company to manage a boat. Splitting €20,000 to €200m four to eight ways greatly defrays the cost of enjoy the boating lifestyle.” “I find that yachting in general is great for quality family time, because we are forced to put our phones away and interact in communal spaces, rather than read Facebook posts over dinner. Privacy is also a key benefit of owning a yacht because only can fish can complain about any ruckus made,” he jocularly adds. “If you like yachts and live in Asia, you are right now in the money. Stay aboard and let the service team handle everything, to enjoy maritime life to its fullest. Asia is summer 365 days a year if you move strategically up and down, and boating is best served warm.”

Superyacht News

 by CAPTAIN MICHAEL HOWORTH (www.thehoworths.com)

Yersin

DEDICATED TO SCIENCE, EXPLORATION AND PRESERVATION

F

ollowing in the wake of Jacques Cousteau will be the 77 metre expedition vessel Yersin. The passenger yacht was christened in Monaco recently when Fanny Fiat, the daughter of the yachts owner, broke a bottle of champagne against the hull to wish God speed as she embarks on a voyage of Science, Exploration and

Preservation carrying a strong message of oceanographic awareness, as she does so. The vessel name Yersin in honour of Doctor Alexandre Yersin (1863-1943), who worked for the Messageries Maritimes merchant shipping company and whose research, led to the discovery of the bacillus behind the bubonic plague on 20th June 1894.

François Fiat, the owner, his wife, his Captain, Jean Dumarais, and his Chief Engineer, Yordan Hristov have designed the yacht themselves without the aid of an agent, naval architect nor designer. Instead construction was entrusted to Piriou a French commercial shipyard in Concarneau. The owner and his team monitored the whole construction process and selected the equipment and fittings themselves. Built to passenger ship standards the yacht has been built with three key objectives in mind as to how the vessel will be deployed. They are Adventure, Science and Education. Adventure suggests the boat can sail anywhere, in any weather, with a reinforced hull for the ice. As her vocation is exploration the owners have set aside 70% of the space to communal and technical areas. When it comes to Science the vessel is packed with eco-friendly technology. Electric propulsion gives the yacht a cruising speed of 11 knots while consuming 380 litres of diesel, an hour half of what would be consumed with diesel engines. At a slower steaming speed of 9 knots, the total consumption (electricity, heating / air conditioning included) falls to 180 litres an hour, giving autonomy for 12,000 miles and 40 days at sea with 40 people on board. Grey water waste is recycled for washing down for example, and reverse osmosis produces freshwater for all the yachts needs. The element of Education, is covered by taking children on board to educate future generations on protecting the environment.

The new Amels 180 will be delivered to her Owner in less than 2 years in Spring 2017. Brokers Y.CO based in Monaco represented the buyer. a very strong claim to being the largest Sun Deck found on any 55-metre yacht. “The continuing success of the Limited Editions range has really continued unabated,” stated Managing Director Rob Luijendijk. “We’re seeing strong interest in our offer from the Middle East, Latin America and renewed interest from Russia. Exchange rates have played a role with our clients in the US, but we believe the key to our success is our commitment to continuously improve, listen to owner feedback and strive for perfection.” It was in September 2005 that Amels first unveiled the Limited Editions concept at the Monaco Yacht Show. Since then the shipyard has built more than 20 Limited Editions yachts, completing each yacht on schedule as promised. This achievement is unprecedented and proves how innovation can revolutionise the superyacht sector. Now, 10 years later, the builder is preparing to introduce the sixth member of the highly successful Limited Editions family at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.

Project Orchid (Klaus Jordan)

PROJECT ORCHID READY FOR HANDOVER THE German yacht-builder Lürssen has earned an international reputation as a specialist in exclusive, custom-built yachts. The family-run Lürssen company can today look back at over 140 years of shipbuilding history. Within just four generations, the Bremen-based Lürßen family has turned a small boat building workshop into a world-class North German shipbuilding company through entrepreneurship, determination and the highest standards of quality. The secret of their success is in their profound trust in their staff, their great drive to innovate and their trademark product quality. The privately run company was founded in 1875 and remains solely in the hands of the 4th generation of the Lürssen family. With a workforce of 1,800, Lürssen maintains seven state-of-theart facilities all in Northern Germany in Bremen-Aumund, Lemwerder, Berne, Rendsburg, Wilhelmshaven, Hamburg and Wolgast. Its headquarters are located in Bremen. The company’s latest launch still known only as Project Orchid has successfully

concluded her sea trials in the Baltic Sea under perfect weather conditions. Her final delivery is planned for later this summer. Both exterior and interior are by British based designers Reymond Langton Design. From a distance, the sweeping curves and elegant proportions give the vessel feminine beauty and elegance and allow the strong, masculine details to emerge; sharp lines define the strong, sculptured surfaces that have been carefully styled to create a sharp contrast with highlights and shadows that lend the superstructure a unique form that subtly changes in different lights as the sun moves across the sky. The balance and proportion of the yacht’s profile also allows for generous exterior decks that offer range of options for guests to enjoy, from sun-drenched, open entertainment areas to more sheltered, intimate formal spaces. The crew is now working closely over the final months before delivery

with the Yacht Management and Project Coordination teams, who have coordinated the build throughout, to prepare the yacht for operational use. Project Orchid will be privately used and will head to Norway for her maiden voyage and for a crew training trip. From there she will make her way from Europe across the Atlantic to enjoy the sun for the winter season between Florida, the Bahamas and The Eastern Caribbean islands.

ITALIAN YARD LAUNCHES FIRST YACHT In a spectacular event that can only ever be created by a classy Italian shipyard, Tankoa Yachts has launched and christened the first of the yachts they are building. Suerte, a 69 metre yacht designed by Francesco Paszkowski was launched in a sensational ceremony that included a ballerina floating through the air suspended above the yacht by a bevy of balloons filled with helium and an impressive display of fireworks, each choreographed to a stunning musical soundtrack. Over 500 guests sat down to a lavish dinner hosted by Tankoa. Musicians played moving from table to table, fine wine was served and it was difficult to perceive that just four days ago the carpeted floating dock on which the ceremony was hosted was in use by a yacht under refit. Suerte will now undergo the final stages of fitting out and undertake sea trials during late July. She will be one of the more anticipated new yachts to grace this years Monaco Yacht Show in September and will be berthed on the T dock. Building began, of what was then S693, in March 2014 for a client of Michel Karsenti’s Yacht-Ology and she is the first hull in a healthy looking company order book to take to the water. Speaking to us at the event, Karsanti said, Suerte is living proof that there are buyers who recognise what we have here in Genoa. We offer a flexible approach to building whatever an owner is dreaming of and we already have clients ready to pay a slight premium for the quality and durability that only Tankoa can offer” Suerte

BOND YACHT BUILDER SWITCHES SIDES JOHN STALUPPI is a serial superyacht owner who loves to build yachts and sell them on. His yachts are famous in that they are all named after movies in the 007 James Bond franchise. Earlier we had reported that Skyfall was to have been built by Sunrise Yachts in Turkey. Now it seems he has cancelled that order and placed it with Italian based Benetti. They have just announced that John Staluppi, one of the company’s most loyal owners ever has renewed his confidence in the yard signing a contract for a semidisplacement hull of 66 metres, fully custom built yacht. Although Benetti will release further details on the yacht over the upcoming months, this project promises to be extremely interesting, involving Frank Mulder for the naval architecture - in collaboration with yard engineering team and Giorgio Cassetta Design for exteriors - along with Benetti in-house design team. As ever Mr Staluppi required a highly efficient and performing hull with a top speed of over 20 knots. He said “Jeanette and I are very happy to be building our new yacht with the Benetti team as my wife, Jeanette and I were extremely pleased with Diamonds are Forever. The new venture will be of a much higher standard with new modern day high tech systems, and once again working with Frank and Bas Mulder. With the combination of expertise between Benetti, Mulder and our design team, we believe this will be our greatest project.”
