THE

SHOW IN TOWN

F

OR THE 56TH YEAR, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show will be making waves yet again as it hits the “Venice of America.” With last year’s renovations and expansions setting the stage for another impressive show, FLIBS continues to set its sights on being bigger than ever. Yachting’s capital is gearing up for more than 100,000 attendees and 1,000-plus exhibitors, all across an exhibition space exceeding three million square feet over the course of the show’s five days.

Set a little later this year — fingers crossed this means slightly cooler and more enjoyable weather — FLIBS will open her gates from November 5 to November 8, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and November 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Boat enthusiasts will swarm the docks of Bahia Mar, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina, The Sails Marina, the Fort Lauderdale Hilton Marina and the Pier 66 Marina, to ogle the nearly 1,500 gleaming boats in all their glory. But what’s a boat without accessories? You’ll have to navigate your way around the Broward Convention Center and Bahia Mar for a glimpse at the latest marine gear and toys as the crowds satisfy their marine mania. This year’s show also features a technology upgrade: a new, text-based communication system. Want reminders about special events, seminars, cocktail specials and more? Text “FLIBS15” to 55778. Want more info about a specific exhibitor and their product? Text that product’s custom interest code to 55778. So just what should you check off your FLIBS bucket list this year? If you’re in the market for a new toy for the yacht, be sure to stop by Nautical Venture’s AquaZone, a 40,000-gallon pool for in-water demos and hands-on testing, at the Sailfish Pavilion outside the Convention Center, or if you’re looking to plump up your resume, check out the Blue Wild Watersports and Marine Expo inside at Lobby B/C. Whether you want the scoop on freediving or tips on stand-up paddleboarding, you’ll be sure to pick up a few tricks to add to your arsenal of skills. But between all that exploring and manning the docks, it’s easy for exhaustion to creep in. Don’t forget to slip away from the maddening crowd to the Dockwalk Captains’ Hideout for a bit of relaxation, food and some much appreciated A/C. And when the horns sound at 5 p.m. on Monday, it doesn’t just signal the end of the show, but an hour’s notice to our annual Dockwalk Party with a “Welcome to the Jungle” theme. Held after the show’s closing for the first time in the Bahia Mar Commodore Ballroom, get ready to ring out FLIBS in style…it’s time to party!

Looking to cool down, fuel up on food, find a few moments of quiet or network and add a little entertainment to your day? The Dockwalk Captains’ Hideout is where you’ll find it all. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, the Hideout will be your refuge. For the third year in a row in the Bahia Mar Hotel, the Hideout has expanded to the full length of the Commodore Ballroom. It’s the same space as last year — only bigger and better, with the entrance through the hotel lobby. When hunger gets the best of you, a hot lunch will be waiting in the airconditioned Hideout from noon to 2 p.m. Top it off with drinks or dessert — cakes, tea and beverages will be served from 2 p.m. until close. The Hideout isn’t just a chance to escape from the stress of the show; it’s also an opportunity to get information on the latest superyacht ventures and marinas, learn more about your career and step up your professional networking game. Free Wi-Fi from e3 Systems will allow you to easily connect with new friends on Facebook and LinkedIn. MPT will be hosting Capt. Roger Towner, MCA Chief Examiner, in the Hideout, so stop by and chat to him and to Amy Morley-Beavers to get the scoop on your mariner training, certification and credential questions. And don’t forget to enter the brand-new Dockwalk Captains’ Hideout Awards. Take home a pair of Bose Headphones for the Best Crew Image Award, sponsored by Zeidel & Co; an Apple Watch Sport for the Voyager Award, sponsored by platinum sponsors Oxxean Empresas Maritimas and South America Super Yacht Support; a GoPro Hero 4 for the Hero Award, sponsored by Marina Casa de Campo; and an iPad Air 2 for the Bonus Award, sponsored by Dockwalk. Get more details on entering at www.captainshideout.com/cho-awards. The winners will be announced on Monday. But we’re not the only ones with goods on offer — e3 Systems will be giving away an e3.IPTV Box with six months of programming to one captain. The winner will be announced Sunday, November 8, at 12 p.m. The 2015 Dockwalk Captains’ Hideout wouldn’t be possible without our incredible sponsors. A special thanks to our platinum sponsors: ◃ Oxxean Empresas Maritimas: marina based in Puerto Montt, Chile ◃ South America Super Yacht Support: prime superyacht agency in South America And heart-felt thanks to: ◃ Crown Bay Marina: St. Thomas megayacht base ◃ e3 Systems: leading technology and IT provider for superyachts ◃ Marina Casa de Campo: Dominican Republic marina and yacht club ◃ Maritime Professional Training: Fort Lauderdale crew training ◃ Martek of Palm Beach: maritime electronics ◃ Yacht Flowers: Fort Lauderdale florist ◃ Zeidel & Co.: yacht apparel; offering t-shirts for all Hideout attendees The Dockwalk Captains’ Hideout is for superyacht captains and crew only.
