SCENOGRAPHIES OF SIREN’SCAPE • PROPOSAL FOR THE 18TH VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE

Important Note: The name of our collective is TEAM NEMO. As the application form only gave the options of handing the project in as a private person or as a company, (which requires, among other things, a company registration number and the latest balance sheet statement) and as Team Nemo does not yet have a legal form at this very moment, we decided together that Point Nemo Publishing Sarl is submitting this application. Point Nemo Publishing Sarl is a member of the collective but is not the entity to be put forward in communication, press etc. The latter is called, as indicated, Team Nemo and is made up of the people whose exact list you will find in the attached documentation alphabetically. TEAM NEMO are:

TEAM NEMO • 1) TEAM PRESENTATION

What we do: TEAM NEMO is a transdisciplinary collective formed by a striving group of friends and young professionals. For the Venice Biennale TEAM NEMO brings together expertise in text, design, sound and video to develop a multi-layered project. Some of us shared for many years a self-chosen home in Vienna (Austria) where we met as students in the various classes of the Akademie der Bildenden Künste from architecture to scenography. Years later Anna Valentiny took over the editorial board of the magazine ADATO and with Eleni Palles & Nikolas Ettel joining the team as co-authors, the publication found its most critical voices and persistent story tellers. Today and together with Jeanne Petesch & Laurye Pexoto, both partners at Valentiny hvp Architects, we think and build architecture & urbanism in Luxembourg and abroad. In 2020 Point Nemo. Publishing was founded, it’s first book project being “40 Years of VA” with Ian de Toffoli writing the Stories from the Inside. For Scenographies of Siren’Scape, Ian will find once more the right words to tell a long and complex story in an intelligent and entertaining way.

Our philosophy: We believe that true innovation of thought and image emerges when the limits of disciplines are pushed to the extremes. A totally new creation may take shape in cross-media language, when the neighbouring and the distant become conglomerate.

Anna Valentiny earned a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 2018. Her thesis project, “Hortus Alienum – Scenographies of Nobody‘s Voyage”, can be read as the culmination of her overlapping interests in writing, design and the curation of thoughts through narration. Before her appointment as chief editor of ADATO in 2017, Anna worked for the Zürich-based architecture magazine archithese. Her most recent endeavor, Point Nemo Publishing, was launched in March of 2020. Anna lives and works as an architect, publisher and editor in Luxemboug and Brussels. WRITER CONCEPT ADATO THEMATIC BOOK SERIES

Flicker through ADATO “Architecture & Medicine”

ADATO is a thematic book series for architectural positions by young professionals, designers and theorists. ADATO creates a place for speculation, research and exploration. ADATO fosters a post-disciplinary discourse, and thrives through the global scale of its editorial network. ADATO encourages change. In the form of essays, interviews, reportages or Werkschau, ADATO is practicing and thinking about architecture in relation to neighbouring fields such as fine arts, film, and theatre, yet always within the socio-political context of the spheres we share. PUBLISHER UNTER DER HOHEN BRÜCKE DIGGING IN A DITCH WRITING FOR A PLACE Author: Ella Felber ISBN: 978-2-9199670-0-1 Pages: 208 Format: 135x210mm Languages: EN/DE Publication Date: Novembre 2021

Listen to Anna’s interview with Ella Felber

This publication is an experiment. It consists of multiple attempts to construct a place within architecture and poetry, as an exception of the distinction. In a case study – a reading – of „Tiefer Graben/Hohe Brücke“, various writings assemble in this book. While digging in this place, an essay, a sequence of encounters, and a sketchbook arise: a reflective investigation, directed explorations and raw, intimate approaches.

AN EXHIBITION SPACE IN AN UNIQUE ENVIRONNMENT CENTRE NATURE ET FORÊT BIODIVERSUM CAMILLE GIRA

Learn more about this project

Location: Remerschen (Luxembourg) Client: Administration des Bâtiments Public Year: 2004-2016

The Biodiversum in the nature reserve Haff Réimech is an elaborate timber construction. It combines frame constructions with a mesh grid of planks. Together they form two opposing halfshells – just like an inverted boat. The facade covering consists of untreated and rough-cut Alaskan cedar shingles. This covering, together with the organic looking shape of the longhouse, determines the ensemble‘s character. Since Fall 2014, the building exists on the small peninsula on the ponds, merging its environment in shape and material, as if it had always been there. The Biodiversum fulfils among others the function of exhibition space, sensitizing children and teenagers but also grown-ups for ecology, the conservation of nature and environment.

DEVELOPING A THEMED SPACE OR WINE AND ARCHITECTURE CENTRE MOSELLAN

Location: Ehnen (Luxembourg) Client: Administration des Bâtiments Public Year: 2005Learn more about this project

The Centre Mosellan in Ehnen is an extension and conversion project. The project consists of a complex of various old buildings with an important architectural history. Within the framework of the project, the existing buildings will be partially reconstructed and renovated with an adjacent new building added to the historic complex. This new museum for Ehnen is developed to stage a themed space all around the topic of the regional wine production – a tasting bar is established on the first floor of the new building while an exhibition parcours is developed together with a team of scenographers.

Laurye Pexoto always liked numbers and looking for solutions to all kinds of problems. At the same time she was very responsive to art. Becoming an architect was the best way to reconcile all these passions. Today whatever the project, Laurye always gives her all and works her best to meet the client’s expectations. She comments the essence of Valentiny hvp Architects’ works the following: Since the very start and over many years, our architecture developed a strong language – always different, answering it’s function and location, yet recognizable. This strength is sometimes its weakness, but it is our identity. For more projects >> http://www.valentinyarchitects. com/studio/directors-associates/laurye-pexoto

Learn more about this project

The office building of KPMG located on the Kirchberg plateau was designed as a landmark to the tram and car-drivers passing by on the avenue John F. Kennedy. The Corten steel facade marks the first layer of separation between public and private. In the inside the complex fathoming between public and semi-public spaces is redefined every day: Most of the workplaces within this modern office building are flexibly designed. This way the working space changes on a daily basis. In this way, an ever moving spatial and inter-human environment takes shape.

LIBRARY FOR MORE THAN 6.700 STUDENTS LUXEMBOUR LEARNING CENTER

Location: Esch-Belval (Luxembourg) Client: Le Fonds Belval Year: 2008–2018 Learn more about this project

Today Esch is going through an extensive re-evaluation programme. Its western periphery Esch-Belval was developed from a former industrial park into the Cité des Sciences - campus to the university of Luxembourg with the Learning Centre (LLC) as its university library. The LLC is developed within the skeleton of the former Möllerhalle. The obsolete core of the building was removed and the outer skin was dismantled. After defining the functions, developing on different levels around a staircase and big open space in the middle of the structure, the biggest challenge was to define an optimal relation between transparency and exchange for group works (between seeing and being seen) & the protection from gazes and noises in intimate working areas.

SCENOGRAPHIES OF SIREN’SCAPE • PROPOSAL FOR THE 18TH VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE

1. THE NARRATIVE - A story about a future past Not so long ago, this city rapidly expanded and merged its suburbs and later the surrounding rural fabric into an uncontrollable ever- growing mass of twisted cityscapes. Using the traces of the past and overlapping the data gathered by our dear colleagues from the ground task - we’ve learned to read Siren’s city. By walking the remains of the winding streets above the valleys and sandstone plateaus, we start to understand the ruling dynamics of previous times. It seems easy to say that what some might consider a loss was predictable. Others might call it “only a logical consequence”… well, the image of today was certainly not intended. If we believe our eyes and the interpretations of our specialists, it seems that, back then, they all tried very hard to fight the machine code that is still ruling today - a grinding monster of regulations, manuals, and codices to hold what cannot be preserved - urban change. Excerpt from the archaeologist’s logbook on Siren's Landscape (Siren’Scape).

2. BACKGROUND Luxembourg's well-known origin myth goes back to Count Siegfried. According to the legend, he fell in love with Melusina and married her on the condition of a special viewing taboo on which he is not allowed to see her during her Saturday’s bath rituals. In various versions, Melusina becomes the source of his prestige and wealth, until Count Siegried breaks the viewing taboo, peeks through the keyhole, and sees his beautiful wife’s secret fish tail. Melusina, realising what had happened, vanished into the river and was never seen again. Melusina’s myth not only drills on the archaeological site of the Bockfiels, but more importantly, it is the very act of risking new viewpoints. This provides new insights to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, which has experienced exceptional economic development over the past three decades and continues to have undeniable effects on Luxembourg’s territory, particularly in regards to spatial planning. Here, four sectoral plans “reserve” land for the future which tries to guarantee a quality of life in an environment of dynamic socio-economic and demographic development. The sectoral plans, put into function by the Ministry of Energy and Regional Planning are supported on municipal level by the PAG (Plan d'aménagement général - general development plan) und PAP (Plan d’aménagement particulier - special development plan), for new or existing development and the building, public road and site regulations. By risking a humorous look through various keyholes, the exhibition offers unusual angles on this story, and brings the spectator into a new world of spatial storytelling. This motif of forbidden portals, opening up concrete and fictional viewpoints regarding the same topic, is manifested in Scenographies of Siren’Scape.

TEAM NEMO • 2) PROJECT PROPOSAL

3. THE EXHIBITION CONCEPT The proposed exhibition Scenographies of Siren’Scape translates seemingly endless pages of design rules, distance regulations, volume recommendations, material specifications and regionally authentic plaster colour collections - in short: building codes - into a walkable mixed media experience. Through different portals, the exhibition opens a discourse about past/present/future building practices. This format challenges the visitors’ perception of spatial planning and urban development and reveals new possibilities for sensing and imagining city life. The exhibition aims to develop a deeper understanding of what it means to describe the built environment in terms of authenticity, temporality, life cycles, and ever- changing living standards. Hence, following the narrative, we can learn from these archaeological remains and recreate an urban archaeology for future generations. The story begins with actual physical remains and unfolds throughout the exhibition into the current , potential, and speculative future past(s) of Luxembourg.

4. DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIENCE Our proposed installation is perceived and designed as a performative apparatus that guides the visitors through the narrative and facilitates immersive experiences. One can walk around a series of abstracted facades, that through the use of VR and sound transform, thus extending the viewer‘s perception of the physical space and inviting them to immerse into a spatiotemporal palimpsest. Within the Sal d’Armi, the physical walk-in installation will be the starting point for the unfolding of the four chapters of the narrative. Its design will include physical and digital elements and their combination will open ‘portals’ into Luxembourg’s built fabric The story is told from the perspective of a future archaeologist's logbook and written by Ian de Toffoli together with the input of the curational team. Divided into three sections - „Thresholds'', „Streets“ and „Signs“ - the installation recreates this future urban absurdity through maps, historical documents, artefacts, mixing real-world scenarios with imaginary agents, and on-site events.
