hat is going on? Like you, I read the headlines, hear the news stories of the day and scratch my head, wondering if we have lost our minds. I don’t think that it is just access to information that is causing the relentless stress we feel as we watch what is happening in our world — things that seem so contrary to what we know to be God’s revealed truth in Scripture and in Christ. More and more, we realize that the Apostle Paul is speaking truth to us when he reminds us that “our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20, NIV)

Point Magazine exists to tell Point University’s stories. It is intended to serve as a vehicle for connecting the University’s alumni and friends. For the first 49 volumes of its existence, Point Magazine was known as The Gold & Blue. The magazine is published by the Communications Office, which retains the right to determine the editorial content and presentation of information contained herein. University Comes Together to Serve Others

he President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll once again includes Point University among its list of colleges and universities noted for “solving community problems and placing more students on a lifelong path of civic engagement.” This designation is the highest honor a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. The University was one of 16 institutions in Georgia given the distinction this year.

“Point University is committed to the idea that every believer is a minister,” said Wye Huxford ’73, vice president for spiritual formation at the University. “We also are intentional when it comes to the idea that an important part of any education that includes biblical studies must be the expression of what we believe. The most obvious sign of our commitment to Christ is our service to others.”

Point University’s service to the community includes a large number of individual and small group projects, in-

cluding internships in locations ranging from a local hospice to a village in Africa; volunteering at local nursing homes and Christian summer camps; and a campus-wide recycling effort led by student volunteers.

Batson-Cook Construction generously donated the materials for the building stations. Kim Roberts, executive director of the Chattahoochee Fuller Center Project, said she was humbled by the generosity of the partner organizations and Point University students.

“This event not only offers hope for a family to have a decent place to live, but it gives our community an opportunity to come together and share God’s love to those in need of housing,” said Roberts.

“It’s amazing what can happen when we all come together.”

Point University student Herani Tesfamariam ’16 said one of her favorite experiences was building relationships with other students while working together toward a common goal.

“It’s been great to serve our community,” said Tesfamariam. “I’ve been able to work with students I don’t know as well, and we are bonding and building community through this project.”

One of Point University’s institutional goals is to inspire a vibrant transformational community that encourages social, intellectual and spiritual growth; Christian witness; intercultural experience; and servant leadership. For Justin Moss ’17, a counseling and human services major, Impact Day is a perfect representation of this goal.

“Our goal is to become more Christlike every day,” Moss said. “Service projects like this are a prime example of who we are and who we’re supposed to be as Christ-followers, as a University and as family members.”

Impact Day has been a Point University tradition since spring 2008. Since then, thousands of hours of volunteer service — from picking up litter to tutoring students, from working on houses to fixing up playgrounds — have been completed by students, faculty and staff.

Volunteers were divided among thirty stations, each building a single wall for a house. At the end of the day, volunteers stood the walls of one of the houses up in the parking lot, giving volunteers ­— and the homeowner, who was present that day — the chance to pray over them.

Volunteers also wrote verses of Scripture and words of inspiration on the wall frames.

Music as a form of communication is explored in many facets. Through entertainment, worship, art, business and marketing, people use music in today’s culture for various individual and collective purposes. In this course, we study music as escape from reality and escape to reality. Intellectual and emotional aspects of musical communication are highlighted, and students formulate personal philosophies of music related to their life goals..

Meet a Skyhawk: Brittany Jacobson ’16

The role of a Point University studentathlete comes with the responsibility of living and learning for Christ, diligently pursuing your studies to be the best student . . . and then comes dedication to your sport. An often-forgotten part of the college experience is the importance of internships and networking.

For Brittany Jacobson ’16, a right side hitter for Point volleyball, getting the necessary experience in the work force was imperative. Through hometown connections, Jacobson was able to nab an opportunity last summer in her native Newton County, Georgia, as an event coordinator at the Chamber of Commerce. Jacobson viewed the internship as a chance to put her touch on events that she watched as a young girl.

“Growing up, I would attend all of the events around town,” Jacobson says. “I always had ideas in my head of what I would change or how I would do something different. When I was able to get behind the scenes, I was able to change it.”

Her main focus as freshly appointed event coordinator of the Newton County Chamber of Commerce? The annual Fourth of July Independence Day celebration. Working with town leaders to plan out the details of the event was a somewhat tedious venture, as she had to earn respect slowly, by proving herself over time. Jacobson went on to make the 6 | POI N T MAGAZIN E

Fourth of July celebration a major success, with American Idol runner-up Bo Bice as a musical act and an estimated attendance of more than 9,000.

With the experience she gained from working in an internship, Jacobson says she has a better idea of her abilities. She now believes in herself as an event coordinator who can provide a quality service in a wide variety of areas, rather than just in sports.

“At first I was focused on sports event coordinating,” Jacobson says. “I’m an athlete, so dealing with sports comes naturally to me. Working in other events didn’t come as easily, but now I know that I can open up to different aspects of event coordination as well.”

Jacobson’s internship was so successful, the Newton County team asked her to stay: “After the internship, they asked if I could stay and continue working for them, but I had to turn it down because I had to finish school,” Jacobson says. “They’ve invited me back this summer, to work in a higher capacity than last time. They also have told me to make sure and apply there after I graduate as one of my first jobs.”

So what is Jacobson’s advice for students pondering the idea of an internship?

“I would definitely suggest doing an internship,” Jacobson says. “At first, I had no real-world experience. When applying for jobs, they didn’t want to look at a GPA, they want to see if you can apply what you have learned in college.”

Skyhawk Swimming Launches with New Head Coach

McDonough Location to Open in Late Summer Point University has chosen McDonough to be home to its third metro-Atlanta location. The University now offers adult-degree and dual credit enrollment programs at McDonough Christian Church. This new southeast Atlanta location is convenient for busy adults looking to start or finish a college degree and high school students wishing to complete their high school diplomas while earning credits toward a college degree.

“We are in a very convenient location right off of Interstate 75, near many shopping and eating establishments and very easy to find,” said Melissa Roberts, site director for the McDonough location, pictured above at the facility’s entrance. “Our location is accessible for residential communities and many businesses, as well.”

The McDonough location will offer an associate degree program, as well as a bachelor’s degree program in human relations. In addition, the site will offer dualcredit enrollment courses for high schoolers. Dual-credit classes begin in McDonough in August, and Access program classes begin in September.

Point University athletics announced this spring the hiring of Kaymee Kelly as the Skyhawks first head men’s and women’s swimming coach.

“I’m excited to join a growing athletic department and have the opportunity to create a highly competitive NAIA program that this university and community can be proud of,” Kelly said.

“There is a tremendous amount of talent in this region, and I am ready to get started on the recruiting trail,” she continued. “I believe we have the tools in place here at Point to be successful very early on. I am thrilled at the opportunity to build a foundation on Christ and to serve Him in my position.”

Kelly most recently served as head swim coach for NCAA Division II Mansfield University (2012-15), where she guided her team to four new school records and qualified for the most Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference participants in six years. While at MU, Kelly maintained a 100 percent graduation rate for her student-athletes.

Point swimming will start competition in the 2015-16 academic year and will practice and compete in home meets at the Valley Community Center in Valley, Alabama.

Closing a Chapter As the Point Forward capital campaign comes to a successful end, Point Magazine talks with President Dean Collins ’79 about what’s next.

Point Magazine: What was the original campaign goal, and was it met?

Dean Collins: When we launched the Point Forward campaign in 2012, our goal was to raise $20 million. That was a pretty ambitious goal for us, but we took a leap of faith, and God answered. So many of Point’s friends and alumni made generous contributions to the campaign over the last three years, and every gift mattered. In fact, I’m thrilled to say that we exceeded our goal by about $75,000.

PM: For our newer readers, what was the Point Forward campaign all about?

What did it fund?

DC: Point Forward was launched to help fund the relocation of our main campus to West Point. So the funds raised as part of this campaign went toward purchasing, renovating and maintaining our new facilities here. Campaign funds also helped us in the transition between campuses — for example, hiring movers to move an entire college campus is pretty expensive! And until we relocated our Atlanta campus to Lindbergh City Center, we still had some of the expenses associated with maintaining our historic campus. The campaign helped the University make it through those challenging times.

That’s a testament to what Point Forward helped us accomplish.

nology needs, at all of our locations. On our main campus, our immediate needs are three-fold: space for our new marching band, a chapel, and more residence hall space. The band is growing faster than anyone expected for the first year, and we are almost out of space in the Scott Fine Arts Center. So we need to expand there.

Since we moved to West Point, we haven’t had a chapel of our own. We’ve been relying on wonderful local churches to host our chapel and communion services.

And we love those churches, but once again, our growth means we need more space. Likewise, all of these new students need somewhere to live — and we need to construct additional residence halls to house them. In the next few months, look for us to launch a new campaign focused on meeting those needs.

PM: How has Point University changed in the last three years?

DC: You know, the world of higher education is constantly changing. And our trustees feel strongly that in order to continue educating students who will influence the world for Christ, we’ve got to keep up with those changes. So in the last three years, we’ve added new degree programs and new sports teams. We’ve launched fully online degree programs, and we’ve added some new off-site locations. We moved our Atlanta campus from East Point to the Lindbergh area. Point Forward laid the foundation that allowed us to accomplish all of that.

PM: How would you encourage our readers to consider a gift to Point?

DC: A gift to Point is an investment in the future of Christian higher education.

Our students are graduating — 400-plus are graduating each year — and they are going on to do amazing things as they serve Christ around the world. When you support Point, whether that’s with a $25 pledge or a gift of real estate, you’re contributing to making a kingdom impact on the world. That’s something worth investing in.

PM: So now that the Point Forward campaign is over, what’s next?

DC: There’s always something new on the horizon! There are always facility and tech-

GAME CHANGER POINT’S NEW FOOTBALL COACH SAYS IT’S TIME TO WIN by austin penny

POINT UNIVERSITY ATHLETICS ushered in a new era this spring with the hiring of Head Football Coach Mike McCarty, formerly an assistant coach at the University of West Alabama (UWA).

With nearly a decade of college football coaching experience, McCarty served the previous six seasons at UWA, where he also worked with running backs, tight ends, linebackers and special teams.

In 2013, McCarty was named interim head coach and the team won the Gulf South Conference Championship, marking the first time in program history that West Alabama had earned back-to-back GSC championships (2012-13).

As a player, McCarty began his career at Troy University as a wide receiver, where he was a two-year letter winner. Finishing his playing career in 2006 at UWA, he earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management. In 2012, McCarty earned a master of arts in physical education at UWA. For McCarty, Point was a sought-out destination; he was drawn to the University’s dedication to Christ and also the opportunity to build its football program from the ground up.

“I love the mission of Point University and its Christ-centered outreach and focus,” McCarty said.

“And I love the idea of laying a firm foundation for Point University and building something that leaves a lasting impression on the long-term development of the character and attitudes of young men.”

To get an idea of Point football’s lead man, you must understand his background. He was raised with football on the brain. His father, a former head football coach at the high-school level, won a state championship.

“I grew up in a football family,” McCarty said. “Football has been a big part of my life since I was born. My dream for coaching was to be in college football. When I graduated with my undergraduate degree from UWA, head coach Bobby Wallace gave me the opportunity to start my career as a graduate assistant, and I am grateful to this day for that chance.”

A man of Christ, McCarty says the Lord helped guide him to Point.

“I took the position because I believe the Lord opened this door of opportunity for my family, and we are extremely honored and humbled to be in this position,” McCarty said. “I consider it a tremendous privilege to be given the opportunity for this coaching staff and this football team to work as hard as we possibly can, day in and day out, to ensure that we are representing Point University in a way that this community will be proud of. The administration and leadership of Point is behind us in every facet, so it has made the initial stages of our development that much smoother.”

With a successful spring under his belt, McCarty has his eyes set toward the fall, when the Skyhawks will look to rebound from a tough 2015 campaign. He demands that his players commit 100 percent effort to becoming well-rounded men on and off the field.

“We have high expectations for everyone who is involved in this program,” McCarty said. “We believe that playing football for Point University is a privilege and not a right, and we expect our level of accountability will reflect that attitude. Academically, our student athletes will be held to a high level of responsibility with their classroom behavior and their study habits to ensure that they start off on the right foot every semester and finish strongly. We want to consistently maintain progress toward degree throughout the entire team, year after year. On the field, our team will work extremely hard in the weight room, meeting rooms and on the practice field. We will strive to prepare to win every day and cultivate winning habits on and off the field.”

“I believe we can win here,” McCarty adds. “The quality of high school football played in the immediate surrounding areas is as good as anywhere in the country, so I believe we can bring in high-character students and outstanding athletes without leaving the backyard.”

IN THE HEART OF IT ALL The Atlanta site at Lindbergh City Center was chosen, in part, for its centrality and ease of transportation.

Doug Johnson ’11, who serves as site director for the Atlanta location, says that both students and staff take advantage of the close proximity to MARTA. “The MARTA station is less than fifty steps away from Point University’s Lindbergh location, for all of the Fitbit connoisseurs,” he says. “As this becomes more of an apparent benefit to current and future students, it will prove to be a great benefit to the overall enrollment of Point University.”

THE TRIP SEEMED LIKE IT WOULD NEVER END. My mind was racing with many thoughts about the classes I would take, the professors I would have, the students I would meet, and what living in the dorms would be like. Driving up to what was then Atlanta Christian College in East Point with my parents, in November 2009, was something I knew I would never forget. We had moved to Georgia just a few months before, and we hadn’t often traveled this far north, except to go to the airport when my dad came and went from his mission trips to Guatemala.

I still remember getting off the exit at Camp Creek Parkway, then weaving through all of the neighborhoods, admiring how pretty the fall leaves looked on the trees. I lived most of my life in Florida; fall pretty much does not exist there, so this was one of the most gorgeous scenes I have ever taken in.

What really took my breath away was when we reached the campus and I got to look at Westside Chapel, the library, the 14 | P OI NT MAGAZIN E

Since the relocation to Lindbergh City Center, walk-in traffic has increased, and Johnson is hopeful enrollment will follow suit. “The most exciting thing about the move to Lindbergh is that this new location gives us an ‘extended reach’ to north Atlanta and many northern counties,” he says. “We are excited about exploring a new group of students that can grow with us as we expand our borders.”

CITY CENTER The Lindbergh MARTA station, just a block from Point’s Atlanta location, is conveniently located in the heart of Buckhead. Students who live and work all over the city can easily commute to their classes without having to fight traffic. Students who do drive to campus enjoy a dedicated parking area in a garage just across the street from the classroom building. “Atlanta traffic is always a problem, particularly in the heart of the city,” says Dr. Joshua Rice, instructor in Christian ministries. “However, the MARTA station is making it much easier for students to SUM M ER 2015 | 15 arrive for class.”

ROOM TO GROW Students at the Atlanta campus are enjoying an improved classroom environment, but there’s also room here for growth: extra classrooms for expansion as more students enroll. Johnson says, “The most difficult thing about moving to Lindbergh was leaving the rich heritage and legacy of the East Point campus. The Access program students were the final group to transition from that location. Many great leaders were groomed and developed on that campus. We were in a state of eagerness and nostalgia at the same time. While the East Point location served as a great campus for traditional and Access students, the Lindbergh City Center location has the potential to be the premier location for Point University. The close proximity to highways, restaurants, and shopping allows the student experience to go beyond the walls of the building. Many students come early to meet with their study groups at nearby restaurants.”

I instantly fell in love with how the place looked, but the moment I stepped into McKinney’s Coffeehouse, I felt it. I felt peace. I felt a sense of security, God’s warm love over the place, and a pat on my back congratulating me for finally reaching the destination that I had been searching for. That day, I was a nervous wreck! I have always been very quiet, so being in a new place where I did not know anybody and spending the night with complete strangers in the dorm was something I did not picture myself doing just a year before.

Prior to this new adventure in my life, I had worked hard to finish high school as early as I could. All of my hard work paid off when I was able to skip 11th grade. My senior year of high school was difficult, because I didn’t know where I was going to go to college. My parents had no money to help, and I had no job at the time. I also knew that my parents would never let me live far away from them, so I was trying to reach a compromise within myself. After months of praying, fighting with myself, and moments of desperation, I decided to search “Christian colleges” on the Internet. What was then ACC was the first one on the list. I skimmed through the site to see where it was located, and when I saw “Georgia,” I closed the window – that would be too far away from where my parents lived. But less than a month later, my father announced that we were moving from Florida to Georgia. At first, I thought nothing of it; but as soon as we moved here, I felt the Lord leading me to apply to ACC. I stumbled into many alumni and current students who urged me to apply. During this time, I learned the greatest lesson of trusting God, because with no money, no friends and no idea of where I was, I applied and let the Lord work. God already had a plan to provide me with all of this through ACC. On that night I spent at ACC as a prospective student, I had made a friend almost instantly. We became roommates when she started school, and she is still one of my best friends to this day. God provided me with scholarships, grants and even my first job! I would have never imagined the other things He had planned for me. I made so many good friends, and even fell in love with my husband.

whole time, I prayed and prayed. I had this sense of belonging. I knew that everyone who had been on this campus would miss it very much, and I was there with them. But I also knew this feeling was more than just me trying to prepare myself to say goodbye. Sure enough, I stayed at the East Point campus as an Access student, and I was hired for a full-time job as the enrollment coordinator for our Access program in East Point.

I am still a part of the Access team here in our new Atlanta location at Lindbergh City Center, and I want to share with you what a blessing it has been.

Driving up to our destination, further north than five years earlier, I felt all of my thoughts coming back again. Who would I meet? What help can I offer the professors? What does the building look like? And the big one . . . how will I adjust? All of the staff from East Point arrived at the Lindbergh location in November 2014 to see it for the first time. We saw the classrooms, the offices, and the work that needed to be done. Changes and new starts can be scary, but walking through the halls, I felt the Lord again – and I knew I was where I needed to be.

The first week at the Lindbergh location, everyone got to unpack right away and get all of their things situated so that they could pick up their work where they left off . . . but not me. Before we even made it here, I had already arranged two campus visits for prospective students. Then people who had heard about the move around the area began walking in. By the second week here, I was finally able to finish unpacking, and I was just so happy to see the potential in this new place.

says “Point University – Now at Lindbergh” that people see when they get off the train. I’ve had walk-ins come straight from that MARTA station because they are curious to see what we are all about. Since I was blessed to experience the ACC years and learn about our history, I get to tell people about that every time I walk them around the building and show them the new classrooms, computers and other resources that are provided for those who attend. I see their faces light up as I tell them how old Point University actually is. They love the history behind the University, and they love that we are in their neighborhood now.

Our brand-new students who started school at Lindbergh City Center this past February are a wonderful group. I had the privilege to work closely with all of them to get their admission files done. I love being able to build these relationships, and with my office being near the entrance to the second floor, I get to see all of those students I helped start here . . . and those I helped start in East Point, too. I even still get to see old classmates who are about to graduate. Their smiles are a blessing to see. Every time I walk down the halls, I see the classes being held at night and I can see still see the one-on-one relation-

ships the professors still have with their students. That, to me, is key. The relationship that Point professors have with our students is more than I can describe with simple words. It is one of the things at the top of my list of why I had originally chosen ACC. I cannot tell you how many times I have been told, “No one in my previous school would have taken the time to do this for me.” That is why I love it here.

This Atlanta class spent time praying together before beginning the night’s lecture. “No matter the degree, our professors always include the point of view of faith in the classroom,” says Widener.

Another benefit of the new Atlanta location is greater access to state-of-the-art technology, including the computer lab in which this student is working. “The computer lab is spacious and available to our students any time we’re open,” says Widener. “It’s set up in a way that classes can be held there, if need be, which makes it easier for a professor to show his or her class something on the computer — such as an English class learning how to format a paper.

SEASONS OF CHANGE

Students like Anthony Hunn ’14 — an associate degree graduate who is now working on his bachelor’s degree in human relations — have seen a lot of change in their years at the University. But Hunn says the change hasn’t caused any challenges for him. “Everything was smooth!” he says.

“The most exciting thing concerning the transition to the Lindbergh City Center location has been the proximity to my home and job, and the building and classrooms. I really like the updated features. I chose Point University three years ago to continue my education, mainly because of it being a Christian college, and I am absolutely glad that I made Point my choice.”

POINT UNIVERSITY IS the new owner of the former Riverside Country Club in Lanett, Alabama, after the club’s board of directors recently gifted the course to the University.

The course and its amenities, which have been managed by the University since 2014, have been renamed the Point University Golf Club, which includes a public golf course and other facilities open to the public. Improvements to the property are underway, including remodeling work within the clubhouse in order to provide an excellent guest experience.

“We are grateful to the Riverside board of directors for their incredible generosity, and we pledge to be faithful stewards of this beautiful gift,” Point University President Dean Collins ’79 said. “Owning the course gives us another touch point in the Greater Valley Area as we strive to serve our community with excellence.”

John King, an award-winning PGA professional and experienced golf operations manager, serves as the new golf club manager. A native of Portland, Maine, King has a teaching resume boasting high-end resorts and private country clubs spanning the East Coast, from Maine to Florida. Early in his SUM M ER 2 015 | 23

career, King met professional golfer and golf broadcaster Ken Venturi. King worked for Venturi for 11 years, teaching first at the Ken Venturi Golf Academy (KVGA) at Greenlefe in Haines City, Florida. He later moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he served as owner and director of instruction for the KVGA at Grandover Resort.

From 2005 to 2014, King was the director of instruction at Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Alabama, working with all levels of golfers from beginners to professionals. In 2011, King became involved in The Plane Truth, a golf program spearheaded by Jim Hardy and Chris O’Connell. Plane Truth’s focus on helping instructors become more educated and enjoy being part of their students’ improvement fell in line with King’s own teaching philosophy, he says. He became a Level 2 Certified Plane Truth Golf instructor, and this continues to be a great partnership.

King says that the club, which is also home to the University’s men’s and women’s Skyhawks golf teams, will provide a top-notch practice facility and a challenging course for competitive match play.

“Riverside Country Club’s members laid a solid groundwork for golf in the community in past years, King said. “They really stepped up to the plate five years ago by adding another nine holes, taking the club to a point where it could host events and tournaments.

“Point University will continue to nurture a love of the game in our communities and bring players, tournaments and outings to the area. As golf course conditions continue to improve, I can see Point University hosting collegiate golf tournaments.”

In addition to public play, an events facility for business meetings and training sessions, club meetings and other special events, such as wedding receptions, has been upgraded. Dining and catering services are also being offered. Heart of the South Restaurant, which relocated from its former downtown West Point location to the Point University Golf Club, provides event planning and meal service during the week, in addition to offering on-site catering services.

on Saturday morning, as he sometimes did not, we left to participate in community outreach at a local church,” Hill says. “We assumed when we came home, he would be there.”

ater that afternoon, they heard the heartbreaking news from a family friend: Omari had been in a car accident and had passed away. Confused by the second-hand report and panicky at the thought of losing their son, the Hills raced to the hospital, where their worst fears were confirmed. Omari and his fellow rear-seat passenger had been ejected from the car in which they were riding, and both had died.

“Of course, we cried and wept for days — and we still do,” Hill says. It was hard to think of life without their vibrant, energetic son.

“Omari was intelligent, friendly, and God-fearing,” Hill remembers. “He was also good in acting in church plays and dramatizations. He attended church every Sunday and played the drums. He

hat’s how Access student Eva Hill ’15 remembers life before October 2010. She and her husband, Toni, enjoyed sharing their Atlanta home with their two grown sons, Rashad and Omari. “As parents raising two young males, they were at times a challenge,” she says. “We always enjoyed the holidays together.”

The family was looking forward to celebrating the holiday season that year — but on Saturday, October 16, everything changed.

The day before, Eva, Toni and 23-year-old Omari had all left for work around the same time, as usual. Omari had been tutoring struggling students in math at Brown Middle School in Atlanta.

He’d also gotten involved with the football and basketball teams, enjoying his interaction with the students. “They began to call him Coach Hill,” Hill says. “He was so very proud of that.”

That Saturday morning, nothing seemed wrong at first. “When Omari did not return home

Faced with the reality that their beloved son and brother was gone, the Hills turned to counseling. “Fulton County referred us to workshops for parents who had lost family members tragically,” Hill explains. “We attended those meetings for a few months. We then attended one year of counseling at Odyssey Counseling in East Point. The therapist was awesome ­— she was a great shelter in time of the storm.”

radually, through their grief, the Hills became aware of the startling reality: too many people die in the U.S. each year as a result of not wearing seatbelts. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately half of all car crash fatalities are among those unrestrained by seatbelts.

Roughly 3 in 5 fatalities among 16- to 20-year-olds can be attributed to failure to wear a seatbelt.

Seatbelt usage rates drop as children and teens age; as a result, the NHTSA has recently launched its first campaign urging parents to insist that their tweens (ages 8-14) buckle up. The NHTSA’s Click It or Ticket campaign website points out that in 2012, the lives of more than 3,000 people over age 5 could have been saved by wearing seatbelts.

“Once we discovered how many teens and young adults were dying, we decided to sponsor a safe driving class,” Hill says. “This empowered us to make other parents aware and address our grief and heartache simultaneously. We thought, ‘What would Jesus do?’ He would have us to assist others.”

Eva and Toni considered opening their own safe driving school, but quickly realized that the logistical and financial obstacles of launching a successful school would be difficult to surmount. “My husband, being the innovator that he is, thought of the idea of collaboration with safe driving schools which are currently in existence,” Hill explains. “This allowed us to move our mission into motion without addressing the organization, time and finances required to open a safe driving school alone.”

The Hills created the Malcolm “Omari” Hill Scholarship Fund and sponsored their first safe driving class in October 2011, one year after Omari’s passing. Since then, they’ve sponsored more than 25 classes, offering local youth the opportunity to learn about safe driving, free of charge. Each class begins and ends with the phrase, “Omari says, ‘Buckle up!’”

B

y 2020, the Hill family hopes the Scholarship Fund can reach a total of 192 classes offered — each including a simulator for students to experience. Long-term, they hope to rent a facility as a central location for sponsored classes and increase both public and private funding.

Omari Hill may have passed away, but his voice can still be heard. This is true in a literal sense; Hill kept her son’s cell phone account after he died, and is comforted that she can still listen to his voice mail recording. But it’s also true in a metaphorical sense. Through Omari’s legacy, hundreds of students are learning to be safe drivers — and countless deaths and injuries may be prevented as a result. When his parents remind students to buckle up, his voice is heard.

“I am sure Omari would be so thankful we have taken the time to honor the transformation of his life — which brings hope for others,” Hill says. “His tragedy will bring about awareness and insight, and save lives.”

Bernard Cameron

ATLANTA B.S., Organizational Leadership Hogansville, Georgia

Like many adult students, Bernard Cameron was hesitant when he considered returning to college. “It had been over 20 years since I had been enrolled in a formal learning situation,” he explained. But a friend recommended Point. It was convenient to his home, and the one-class-per-five-weeks schedule was something he felt like he could handle.

Prior to enrolling at Point, Cameron had earned an associate degree from Atlanta Junior College in 1986. He found that the Point environment was quite different. “What was unique about Point was its emphasis on not only the classes we took, but how our Christian experience was integrated into each class,” he says. “So, not only were we being prepared for a career, but attention was paid to our walk with Christ.”

Cameron says that Kathy David, director of disability services, had a tremendous impact on him as he dealt with getting the accommodations for which he qualified as a student with low vision. “There were some struggles at first, but I could not have had a better advisor,” he says. “She exceeded my expectations by ordering special equipment, reviewing my written submissions, and just being an encourager.”

Now that he’s back in the swing of the higher education routine, Cameron has no plans to stop any time soon. “I am contemplating enrolling in a master’s degree program studying sociology or an area related to consumerism,” he says.

Wherever Cameron ends up next, he’ll take with him the most valuable lesson he learned at Point: “Having matriculated at Point has made me more aware of the importance of servanthood.”

Cherise Costley

WEST POINT A.A., General Studies LaGrange, Georgia After high school, Cherise Costley dreamed of attending what was then known as Atlanta Christian College.

But life simply got in the way. Years later, when the newly renamed Point University relocated to West Point, Costley heard about the Access program and how it fits into adults’ lives and schedules. “I attended West Georgia Technical College off and on for six years, but was not able to get very far because of the schedules,” she says.

“With Point’s Access program, I can be a full-time student while also ensuring my other responsibilities are completed.”

Already pursuing a bachelor’s degree in human relations at Point, Costley plans to continue her education at the graduate 30 | P OI NT MAGAZIN E

Regina Clyburne

ATLANTA B.S., Human Relations Powder Springs, Georgia Regina Clyburne made two attempts to earn a degree before she enrolled at Point, but something just didn’t feel right. “They were not conducive to my schedule or my learning style,” she explains.

“Point University has been a blessing from God. It is set up to support the adult student. Where my previous attempts were challenging and overwhelming, I did not feel that pressure at Point. I felt the support of my professors and facilitators, and it was a comfort to know that I was among people who shared similar beliefs.”

Clyburne had already been in a helping field, and the responsibility of that role spurred her on to higher education. “I am in a position where I have such a profound effect on people’s lives,” she says. “I knew I needed to become more educated so that I would be serving at my highest potential.”

Currently, she volunteers as a counseling liaison in her church, and she also has been a volunteer advocate for children through CASA of Georgia.

The role of faith, Clyburne says, is especially important in the helping professions. “I believe that knowing how God feels about people and the challenges they face can only enhance my ability to support them with moving into a positive direction,” she says. “Once you know what God says, you can compare that with the psychological theories and premises and hopefully come up with wise counsel.”

Clyburne is already applying to graduate school for counseling, and feels that Point has prepared her well. “I feel so blessed to have had the Point experience,” she says. “It has been an emotional journey that has yielded great revelation.” level and pursue a career in higher education. “I have always been fascinated with anything in the psychology and/or sociology fields,” she says.

She credits Blair Walker ’83, West Point site director and Access instructor, with encouraging her to keep going. “He has taught me how to be a better listener, a better Christ follower, and he has shown me that even when you go through dark moments, there is always a reason to smile,” she says. “You can literally see Christ living in him.”

Costley was raised in a Christian home, but says that the experience of faith and learning she has had at Point has been powerful nonetheless. A favorite course, Old Testament Survey, helped her better understand “the foundation of our faith.”

“It wasn’t until I came to Point that I saw the big picture of how our faith affects anything and everything we do,” she continues. “I have learned an abundant amount of information that will help me further my career, but I have gained an even better understanding of our faith.”

Ruan da Costa

WEST POINT B.B.A., Management Campo Bom, Brazil Ruan da Costa might never have ended up at Point if not for his former soccer coach, fellow Brazilian native Saulo França (’12-’14). “I figured it would help me having someone that understood my background and culture as my coach,” he explains. “I will be forever grateful to him.”

Da Costa had attended other colleges before, but says he found Point’s apartment-style housing more appealing than the residence halls he’d experienced elsewhere. “Also, I really enjoyed my relationship with the professors here,” he says. “Much more personal than at my previous colleges.”

Da Costa always planned to be his own boss one day, so

Angela Forester

PEACHTREE CITY B.S., Human Relations Tyrone, Georgia

Angela Forester’s collegiate career began at what was then Atlanta Christian College in 1986, when she enrolled as a traditional student, pursuing a music degree. Years later, she found herself back at what is now Point University — but in an adult program and at a location (Peachtree City) that wasn’t available in the ’80s. “I chose to enroll at Point to finish my bachelor’s degree because I believe in what the University stands for, their mission, what it has been and what it will be in the future,” she says.

Not all of the faces she encountered at Point were new, though, including that of Dr. Jim Donovan ’74. “Dr. Donovan was my ACC president when I attended the first time, and this time around, I was blessed to have him as a professor,” she says.

With 25 years of business experience under her belt, Forester could easily have pursued an organizational leadership major, but she found herself drawn to human relations.

“I desired to dive into myself as a person, becoming more familiar with who I am, who God is, and to help people in the world around me,” she says. “At this point in my life, it is more important for me to help guide people toward a positive life.”

Although Forester is seeking God’s guidance as to what her future holds, she says her time at Point had a big impact on her life. “My Point experience has assisted me with an individual acceptance of where I am in my life, and desires for where I want to be in the future,” she says. “Point University has opened doors for me personally and professionally, broadening me toward individual development, renewal and improvement.”

a major in management seemed like a good fit. Da Costa graduated as one of the first students to earn Point’s new bachelor of business administration degree in management.

He especially enjoyed Professor Alan Kemper’s Strategic Management course. “I liked the freedom that we had in this class,” he says.

As a transfer student, da Costa didn’t have quite as much time to enjoy the Point experience as some of his fellow graduates. But he thinks that the faith-based knowledge he gained during his time at Point will be helpful in the long term. “Studying more in depth about religion and Christianity helped me to be more open minded,” he says. “I think that this is something valuable that will make me relate easier to people in the future.”

Now that college graduation is behind him, da Costa has big plans for the future. He’s returning home to Brazil and will be working with his brother. “This past January we started an import and export business, and I am very excited about it,” he says.

And, as planned, da Costa will be his own boss.

Martika Gamble

WEST POINT B.S., Biology Shiloh, Georgia

Martika Gamble has always dreamed of helping people by serving in the medical field. But in 2004, this dream was intensified when she lost her biological father in a car accident. “When this traumatic event happened, it made my desires stronger to do what I had set out to do, which is to be and make a difference by helping people,” she says.

When the time came to go to college, she didn’t apply to many schools, trusting that God would lead her in the right direction. “He chose Point University, therefore, I chose Point University,” she says.

Known around campus for her positive attitude and engaging smile, Gamble says she will miss the close-knit Point community — especially the volleyball team, for which she worked as a manager for several years.

“Point has changed my perspective on how I view people,” she says. “Being here has taught me how to be patient with people, while at the same time, loving them through their situations. Being here has taught me to never let your light go out, and to always be the one doing the influencing. I have learned that people are always watching you and looking for a reason to either do what they want to do, or do the right thing. My testimony can help the other person get through it and be okay.”

With a long-term goal of becoming either a cardiovascular surgeon or a microbiologist, Gamble first intends to pursue a master’s degree in microbiology before attending medical school.

Kevin Gartrell

PEACHTREE CITY A.A., General Studies Douglasville, Georgia Kevin Gartrell is not new to higher education. He attended Indiana University/Purdue University of Indianapolis as a full-time, traditional student, but had to discontinue his studies when various life issues got in the way.

“I have been physically disabled since 2010,” he says, “but with the support and encouragement of my wife, I felt as if God would have me prepare for further use in His kingdom. To be honest, I just want a closer relationship with our Lord. If He will do the work in me through preparation, that I may be of service to others that would bring glory to Him, then I’m in it to win it.”

Robert Hayes

ATLANTA B.S., Organizational Leadership New York City, New York It was an Emory University recruiter who encouraged Robert Hayes — who was seeking a program that combined business and theology — to consider Point University.

He found that the organizational leadership major in the Access program was the perfect fit. “The organizational leadership major at Point is where business, leadership and Christian ministry all intersect and combine to make one beautiful and powerful gift to the body of Christ and the kingdom,” he says. “It is rare to find an undergraduate program like this.”

Hayes says he had long wondered how to reconcile his desire to minister to others with his entrepreneurial spirit, and that the Access program helped him join those two sides of himself. “The organizational leadership program instilled in me that the calling to do business is just as valid a calling and ministry as the call to preach or serve in a church, or on the mission field,” he says. “I am an ordained minister and I am an entrepreneur; the Great I Am made me both of these. Because of my time at Point, I now feel competent and confident enough to courageously go out into ‘the world’ as a minister and a businessman and make a difference for Christ.”

His classes, he says, helped him realize that business is all about people. “More than a great business plan or strategy, more than systems and processes, building and maintaining a successful business is about attaining, building up, and retaining successful people,” he says. “Realizing this truth was an ‘aha’ moment for me.”

Hayes and his wife recently started a business venture, and he was also accepted to graduate programs at both Emory University and Yale University. “I am courageously stepping out in faith and putting into practice all that I’ve learned at Point,” he says.

Gartrell chose Point for its Christian focus, but also liked the idea of being in the physical classroom for just a few hours a week. After attending orientation and talking to Ross Haralson ’07, site director for the Peachtree City location, he knew he was in the right place. “I knew if the rest of the school was as sincere and genuine, it was going to be great,” Gartrell says. “His passion to promote others’ success is contagious.”

Already pursuing his bachelor’s degree in Christian ministries at Point, Gartrell finds it amusing that one of his favorite courses so far was one he avoided in high school. “Biology was absolutely incredible!” he says. “The way Professor Donnie Cook applied it to the classroom was fantastic. Everyone should be able to see the proof of our God’s genius through the examination of the human body.”

Gartrell isn’t yet sure where his educational path will lead him. “I never really had any after-Point plans going into this,” he explains. “At 58 years young, you learn that success is where preparation and opportunity intersect. I believe Point is who God is using to prepare me for whatever road He chooses.”

Charlesetta Lewis

SAVANNAH A.A., General Studies Savannah, Georgia

Charlesetta Lewis kept telling herself she wanted to attend a Christian college. She just hadn’t found the right one yet. But then Point University opened its Savannah location, and Lewis saw her moment. “Every day, the transit bus would go by, and the logo read, ‘Point University, taking the cross everywhere,’” she says. “This caught my eye, because that’s what it’s all about — bearing the cross of Jesus — so I enrolled.”

At Point, Lewis found a faith-based environment that had been lacking at the other colleges she attended. “At Point, we prayed before class, we could say the name of Jesus freely, and we were all like family,” she says.

Lewis found the professors and staff at the Savannah location to be encouraging and inspiring. She is particularly grateful for the assistance of Roxane Pace, site director. “I would always tell her I was not computer-savvy, so she pushed to have a computer class so that those who need help in that area can now receive it,” Lewis says.

Citing favorite courses ranging from Public Speaking and Short Stories to Old Testament and New Testament, Lewis clearly loved every minute of her time at Point. “My experience with Point has changed my life in so many ways,” she says. “It showed me who I really am, and it brought out strengths I never knew I had. I am forever grateful.”

Lewis plans to come back and pursue a bachelor’s degree in Christian ministries at Point. “There are so many areas that I want to embark upon, but I really believe that I will end up teaching and preaching the Word of God,” she says.

Timothy Mitchell

WEST POINT B.S., Biblical Studies and Preaching Ministry Stockbridge, Georgia Tim Mitchell’s sister, Laura Mitchell Webster ’12, attended Point, so he had a pretty good idea of what to expect when he enrolled as a first-time freshman. “I knew that Point University would provide the knowledge and experience I would need to be successful in ministry,” he says.

Mitchell also knew from the start that he wanted to major in biblical studies. “Biblical studies would afford me the opportunity to broaden my scope of understanding in the Bible and also for its application,” he says.

He cites two professors, Dr. Barry Blackburn and Dr. Jennifer Allen Craft ’07, who had the biggest impact on him during his studies. “Both these professors, and others, took an interest in my life beyond academics,” he says. “They are both outstanding teachers and passionate about what they help students learn.”

Mitchell even says the infamously difficult Greek courses were among his favorites. “Greek was a challenge, but incredibly rewarding to work through,” he explains.

Currently, Mitchell serves as youth and children’s director at West Point First United Methodist Church in West Point, Georgia, and says that his studies at Point have prepared him for that and future ministry roles.

“Through relationships with students and professors and rigorous academic courses, Point helped me to prepare to be a leader in ministry wherever I go,” he says. “I am confident that without the time that I have been at Point and what has been invested in me, I would not have been nearly as prepared for ministry.”

Roy Moore

ATLANTA B.S., Christian Ministries Miami, Florida Roy Moore first came to Point University in search of accreditation, having attended another college — which lacked accreditation — in the past. “I had wasted years at a college with no accreditation, and did not want to lose time or money,” he says. Moore embarked on a search for a college that would offer him biblical education, but with the accreditation he would need to pursue graduate studies after finishing his bachelor’s degree. “I found what was then Atlanta Christian College,” he says, “and my experience since has been very rewarding.”

Moore chose to major in Christian ministries because he felt it would align best with his long-term goals: earning a master of divinity degree, becoming an elder in the United Methodist Church and becoming a chaplain. “I’ve always been curious about what the Bible says,” he explains, and his studies at the University did not disappoint.

He cites Dr. Lee Reese, Dr. John Morris and Dr. Gordon Griffin as favorite professors. “I was very intrigued with their style and knowledge of the course curriculum and their personal experiences,” Moore says.

“My experience at Point University changed my life in a way that I view the world and the people in it from a totally different angle than I did before coming here,” he says. “I have come to understand that God wants me to be a part of a community.

Previously, I understood the personal quest for God, but now I realize that God wants us to be inclusive of others.”

Demetrius Rudd

WEST POINT B.S., Child and Youth Development Valley, Alabama

As a native of the Greater Valley Area, Demetrius Rudd didn’t really have to go away to college; college came to him when Point University relocated to his hometown. “I felt it was a great place for me to grow and to further develop my relationship with God,” he says, “as well as being a light for Christ any way I could.”

He chose his major, he says, because he likes making other people happy. “Whatever I can do to put a smile on a child’s face makes me happy, as well,” he explains.

A member of the football team, Rudd says he’ll never forget the realization of what a blessing it is to have the opportunity to earn a college degree. “I had the chance of playing the great game that I love for two years, and I also had the chance to coach football as well,” he says. “I realize since I have been here, my desire to love, help and motivate others has proliferated.”

Rudd is grateful to Dr. Lacey Southerland for motivating and encouraging him during his time as a student in the Department of Education. “She is truly a great mentor and a great role model,” he says.

Now that he has earned his degree, Rudd plans to continue expanding the business he had already started, as a fitness instructor in the local area. He also plans to continue coaching sports and hopes to inspire young people.

Layna Winn

WEST POINT B.A., Early Childhood Education Newnan, Georgia When she was in high school, Layna Winn visited what she says seemed like a hundred different college campuses. “However, when I visited Point, the difference was immediately clear to me,” she says. “My older brother [Tyler Winn ’10] had attended Point, but I did not know how great of a university it was until I met the people who make Point what it is.”

Winn fell in love with teaching after shadowing an elementary school teacher in high school. She says the opportunity to get into the classroom her very first semester is what set Point’s education major apart from others she considered. “To me, there is no better way to learn how to teach than to jump in and teach!” she says. “I have constantly had the support of my professors, and know that I can come to them even after I graduate

Maila Thao

WEST POINT B.S., Psychology Lawrenceville, Georgia Maila Thao chose to attend Point University based on the recommendation of a friend — a recommendation she’s now very glad she took seriously. “I was given the impression, from a previous graduate, that Point had great professors and was a great school,” she says, “which I can now proclaim to be true!”

Thao majored in psychology, she says, because it reflects her own personality and mindset. “I love learning about the human mind, and how and why things work the way they do,” she explains.

Yet it wasn’t just the courses in her psychology major that made an impact on Thao. “To be honest, I’ve enjoyed all of the courses that I’ve taken,” she says. “From my psychology courses to my biblical studies courses, I’ve learned so much in such a short amount of time. All of the professors that I’ve had did an amazing job!”

Thao isn’t done with school yet, though she plans to take a year off before pursuing graduate studies. In fall 2016, she plans to enroll at Armstrong State University to pursue a master’s degree in communication sciences and disorders.

Although Thao’s time at Point went by quickly, she says it has left her forever changed in more ways than she can imagine. “I’ve grown so much while at Point, intellectually, spiritually and personally. I am truly blessed beyond all measure, and hope that others will be able to experience the same blessing.” and continue in my teaching career. I have gained real-world knowledge of the classroom through this program, and feel more than prepared to successfully manage a classroom of my own in the fall!”

Though she loved her education courses, Winn says some of her favorites were the courses that made up her biblical studies minor. “Although I had grown up in the church, these courses really caused me to dig deeper and allowed me to solidify my beliefs in a way that made it easier to express and share my faith,” she explains.

Winn says she’s grateful for the impact Point had on her personal development, too. “Before coming to Point University, I was a very reserved person,” she says. “Being involved was never something that really interested me as a high school student; in fact, it pretty much scared me. However, Point University brought out the real me. I was surrounded with people who cared about me and pushed me to be my best. I was encouraged to get involved in on-campus activities and quickly joined leadership positions.”

Winn’s hard work at Point will pay off this fall, when she begins teaching second grade in Troup County, Georgia.

SPOTLIGHT Point alumnus Mason Mercure ’04 found himself making news around Christmas time this year.

Mercure, a former Marine and an officer with the Atlanta Police Department, heard from a fellow officer about a family whose Christmas presents were stolen just a couple of days before the holiday. The criminals had also badly beaten and injured the family’s dog.

Mercure was moved to action, and posted on his own Facebook page about the family’s plight. Friends began to respond, and a GoFundMe site was launched. A total of more than $1,500 was raised for the family. “It’s really easy to put yourself in these people’s shoes and empathize with them and understand what they’re going through,” Mercure told Atlanta’s WSB-TV. Dr. Delno Brown died December 8. Dr. Brown served the University as academic dean and professor of Christian education from 1964-69.

Brenda Cunningham, better known as “Ms. Brenda,” died December 23. She served for many years in the dining hall at the East Point campus, and was known and loved by decades of Point alumni.

Larry Doyal, longtime friend of the University, died November 23 after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Buchanan Doyal ’64, who served the University as receptionist for many years.

John Parris (’70-’72) died January 26.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Guidry Parris (’71-’72), and their three children.

Julia Harris Rose (’67-’70) died March 29. She is survived by several sisters and brothers, including Johnnie Harris Baldwin ’70 and Dennis Harris ’58.

5THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN HOUSTON

1. Enjoy some authentic Texas barbecue. One of the biggest benefits for any visitor or transplant to the Lone Star state is simple: barbecue. Asking someone to name his or her favorite barbecue restaurant in Texas is like asking a parent about his or her favorite child. There are many that are delicious, but the one that is a must-visit is Corkscrew BBQ in Spring, Texas, north of Houston.

Located beside a shopping center, their restaurant is a food-truck trailer with a covered dining area using a metal carport. But do not let their modest appearance fool you: on weekends, the line starts to form at 9:00 a.m. for an 11:00 opening, and for good reason! For the past three years, they have been featured on innumerable “Best BBQ” lists and awards all over Texas. (Be warned, though — their beef ribs, a Saturday-only menu item, are more than one-and-a-half pounds of delicious smoked meat!)

2. Visit one (or more) of the many museums and studios in downtown Houston. Do you want to take a trip to space without leaving the ground? What about view some rare art, or are you more intrigued by scientific artifacts? No matter what interests you, there is surely a museum for it in Houston — even funerals! If you’re a student, be sure to bring ID, as you can get discounted or free admission at a variety of locations with the display of a student ID. You can leave the car in the garage, too, as you can travel between them all by using the city’s light rail system or bus service. If you would rather focus on local art than historic artifacts, there is a wide swath of studios popping up with independent artists all over the north side of the city.

3. Visit Houston’s oldest worshipping community. Downtown Houston is full of buildings that speak to the storied past of the state of Texas, not just to the modern oil and gas industry — and one of the top sites to visit for history buffs would have to be Houston’s first worshipping community, and its only one still worshipping at the same site today. Christ Church Cathedral, of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, was built in 1839 and still stands tall 176 years later. Along with its storied past, the Cathedral is full of things to see, do, and enjoy: kneeler pads cross-stitched with the names of each church in the diocese, the Hines Center for Spirituality & Prayer (to open in fall 2015), and the delicious Treebeards restaurant in the Cloister.

4. Catch a show at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and enjoy preshow meals and refreshments on the Woodlands Waterway. Located in The Woodlands — one

of the top 10 planned communities in the nation, 30 minutes north of downtown — the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is a top venue for some nationally acclaimed acts, ranging from contemporary music to stand-up comedy. It’s never fun to go to concerts hungry, so be sure to stop at the nearby Woodlands Waterway, known for its scenic views and wide variety of dining choices, for dinner before you hit the concert of your choice.

5. Spend a day relaxing on Lake Conroe or hiking in the Sam Houston National Forest. When the weather is nice, why spend it indoors? Pop up to gorgeous Lake Conroe, where you can rent a boat, or just enjoy sitting by the water. If you’re not a fan of swimming, you can travel north to Huntsville, to the Sam Houston National Forest, home of more than 161,000 acres of hiking, camping, hunting, fishing and equestrian activities, to experience God’s creation.
