&B fans haven’t seen the last of Maya and Nicole’s parents: Conservative Midwesterners Julius and Vivienne have moved to Los Angeles to be closer to their girls. It’s a move that the actors are thrilled about. Enthuses Anna Maria Horsford (Vivienne), “I must tell you that after we had done our last show, Obba [Babatundé, Julius] and I happened to be at the same event, which was Jackée Harry’s [exLily, ANOTHER WORLD] birthday party, and all of these people who I never knew watched BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL secretly told me, ‘That’s my story! What’s going to happen next?’ and I said, ‘Oh, no. We’re done. We’re off now,’ and they said, ‘No! They can’t do that!’ I said, ‘CBS can do whenever they want. What are you talking about [laughs]?’ But, it turned out that there is still more story to tell. Obba and I are thrilled. As an actor, you can’t afford

to get your hopes up about anything because you never know what’s going to happen in this business from one minute to the next. The last time we were here, it opened up the gates to a whole lot of discussion and we’d love to see that happen again.” When last seen in August at Maya and Rick’s wedding, the duo had trouble accepting that their firstborn child was transgender. The Avants are in for an even bigger shock this time around, as they arrive just as daughter Nicole is making the biggest decision of her life about whether or not to be a surrogate and carry a baby for Maya and Rick. “This story is going to be quite a journey for everyone involved,” says Horsford. “Initially, Vivienne returns

“Tears will be shed.” has made a long-term commitment here, even if they do sharply disagree on some things.” Horsford shares that despite the months-long absence from the B&B set, it felt like no time had passed since the last story arc played out. “I am so happy with the welcome back,” Horsford smiles. “Everyone said, ‘We knew they wouldn’t end things like that,’ and they were right. because she had gotten a taste of something she was desperately missing in her life. At the wedding, she realized just how much she missed the two children she gave birth to, but what she comes to find is that her children need her, too. Tears will be shed.” Horsford teases that the new story arc will shake up the Avant family like never before. “It’s going to be interesting to see how they play this dance,” she says. “Julius and Vivienne will have a lot to talk about. The story not only focuses on the parent/child relationships, but it also examines their marriage. The B&B writers seem to have a crystal ball when it comes to looking into a long-term marriage. The last time we saw this couple, they did agree on certain levels, like what it is to have a child outside of the parameters of what we call ‘normal.’ In their day, you looked at a baby and thought, ‘This child is going to become a doctor.’ You didn’t think about their sexuality. They’ve had their share of disagreements on that issue, as well, and yes, Vivienne didn’t leave with her husband at the wedding, but you don’t just break up over something like that. In this day and age, to see a long-term marriage like theirs is a big deal —

these two beautiful and talented young women who play my daughters [Karla Mosley, Maya, and Reign Edwards, Nicole]. I love them. They’re so clear, not just in their acting ability, but in knowing their characters, as well. The fans are welcoming me back to town, too!” she marvels. “That’s the big deal. The fans have really picked up on this. We didn’t have Twitter the first time I was on a soap opera [as GL’s Clara in 1979]. For most of my career, I wasn’t tweeting. No one knew what it was, but now the fans can tell you immediately how they’re feeling. When I first started doing it, I thought, ‘I’m not going to be that person,’ but now I wake up an hour earlier just to tweet [laughs].” 5

late- breaking news Q With Hilary showing no signs of emerging from her coma, Neil is having doubts that his ex will ever wake up. Gwen tries to buoy his spirits by insisting that success is just around the corner. “Gwen is believing in that for him,” points out Nadine Nicole (Gwen). “She’s in love with Neil and she wants to have a relationship with him so much that she’s taking the optimistic route that they can make this happen together. For Gwen, there’s no other way but a positive outcome, so she’s blocking out everything else.” Gwen is startled when she sees Hilary’s fingers move. Encouraged, Neil takes the patient’s hand and urges her to come back to them. “Hilary hasn’t moved in a very long time so seeing her come to life, even a little bit, gives Neil and Gwen an amazing sense of hope,” says Nicole. “They’re not really sure if it’s some kind of involuntary twitch or just a muscle spasm but it’s a sign they might get what they want.” Dr. Neville examines 6

They just want Hilary to come back.” When Neil presses for more details on a timeline for Hilary’s full recovery, the doc becomes defensive. “Because Neil has so much at risk, he’s pushing the doctor’s buttons, and their way

of communicating is kind of humorous, but at the same time it’s nerve-wracking because they’re not agreeing on some things. Dr. Neville warned them from the beginning that this would all have to be done his way, so it’s getting frustrating for Neil.” Gwen takes Neil for a walk and after they leave, Dr. Neville dozes off. That’s when Hilary opens her eyes and focuses on the stranger napping nearby. “Hilary has been hopped up on all these crazy drugs, so when she wakes up, she’s very disorientated,” previews Mishael Morgan (Hilary). “There’s a real disconnect with reality and she’s trying to fight through the clouds, but there’s no telling what kind of effect these drugs have had on her.”

Q It’s a wild week for Chad, who awakens from his coma and is stunned to find himself handcuffed to a hospital bed. Portrayer Billy Flynn previews, “As soon as Chad wakes up, the police are notified. So while Chad is trying to understand what has happened to him, he suddenly has all these police in his room who want to arrest him.” Complicating matters is that Chad is suffering from memory loss. “Chad doesn’t know why he’s in the hospital,” Flynn points out. “He doesn’t even remember that Will is dead.” Daniel walks in on the commotion and protests the actions taken by the Salem PD. “Daniel doesn’t want to release Chad until he’s sure that everything is okay with him,” explains Flynn. “Even Rafe thinks that Chad should get his bearings before being taken away.” Ultimately, Justin has the final word and he wants Chad locked up immediately. “Justin says that the jail doctors can take care of Chad,” sighs

the actor. “Justin thinks that if Chad remains in the hospital, Stefano will have somebody take him away. He doesn’t want Chad to slip away again.” In the midst of the chaos,

“As soon as Chad wakes up, the police are notified.” Abigail shows up. “She can hear Chad say, “There’s no way I killed somebody. You have to believe me.’ ” To Chad’s disappointment, Abigail leaves. “She doesn’t know what to believe, either,” notes Flynn. “She’s stuck trying to believe her fiancé [Ben, the real killer], even though

Abigail’s heart tells her that Chad is being honest.” Chad is carted off to the slammer, given a quick exam by a jailhouse doc and then tossed behind bars. “Chad knows that he needs a lawyer, but because of the memory loss, he doesn’t remember that Aiden is already representing him,” Flynn points out. Meanwhile, Marlena pays a visit to Chad. “She and Chad have a conversation,” Flynn relays. “That’s when the news of Will being killed starts to kick in. Chad says to Marlena, ‘How could I have murdered Will? He’s my best friend.’ ” To Chad’s relief, Marlena believes him. Later, Andre pays Chad a visit.... 7

GH’S SPINELLI CLOSES IN ON THE TRUTH ABOUT “JAKE” Q It’s a week filled with ups and downs for Spinelli as he hunts for a way to figure out who “Jake” was before the accident that rendered him a John Doe. There’s a hiccup in Spinelli’s investigation when he’s nabbed for hacking into the G.H. computer. “It’s been really fun!” says Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) of revisiting “The Jackal’s” computer-hacking roots. “Back to trying to figure out information, trying to stay out of trouble while doing so, and getting to do the searching with some of his friends, i.e., Sam and Carly. It’s felt like the old days.” Spin is caught off-guard when he’s busted. “He never assumes that he’ll be caught because he’s always one step ahead of everybody,” Anderson explains. “But he also has a lot more to lose this time around,” given that he has a daughter, Georgie, and a live-in love, Ellie, back in Portland. “He’s less inclined to do illegal things now, but in 8

Software Update: Spinelli (Anderson, l.) has a new plan to solve the “Jake” (Billy Miller) mystery.

this situation, when he’s trying to help out Sam and do something that’s for a good cause, he obviously thinks it’s worth the risk — but also, he doesn’t think any risk is that high, because he’s so good. So, I think getting arrested does take him aback, for sure.” Enter Diane. “She doesn’t have much sympathy for him that he’s lost his touch,” Anderson chuckles.

“He’s less inclined to do illegal things now.” She comes to his rescue, but tries to extract a promise from Spin to contain his behavior to the legally sanctioned. “He’s pretty upfront with her,” the actor previews. “He says, ‘Don’t worry, I won’t ever do this again.... but I have to finish this first.’ ” Once out of lockup, Spinelli charges ahead with a radical scheme to

pinpoint “Jake’s” identity. “Basically, he wants to take ‘Jake’s’ X-rays and medical records and put them into a reconstruction program. There are X-rays from when ‘Jake’ first came in [to the hospital], before all of the surgeries happened to fix the fractures in his face and whatnot. Spinelli thinks he has constructed a program that can use what he looks like now, mesh that with the X-rays and produce an image of what he looked like before. So, then the task is, what if we don’t recognize that face? Spinelli is thinking about running it through facial recognition software tied to the DMV, because they don’t assume that it’s anybody that they’re going to know.” But if the program works and produces an image of Jason’s face, Spinelli and Sam will be in for quite a shock. “I hope that Spinelli gets to have that moment of realization,” Anderson says. “That would be really satisfying.”

Q “The show is fabulous, the character is fabulous, and any chance to work with Bradford [Anderson, Spinelli] is like a glass of champagne,” beams Carolyn Hennesy, who is back on GH as Diane this week. Scheduling the appearance tipped her off that a Diane/Spinelli reunion was in the offing. “We had to wiggle around some dates, because I was going to be in New York on the date that they wanted to film, initially. So they said, ‘Well, we’re going to have to check with Bradford and see what we can do.’ That’s when I went, ‘Ohhh!’ ” When she returned to the studio, Hennesy reports, “It’s been so long since I’ve been there that I introduced myself to everybody by saying, ‘Hello, I’m Carolyn Hennesy, I’m new.’ Everybody laughed. Then I saw Bradford and threw my arms around him, forced him to throw his arms around me and was simply not going to let him go! It was just such a lovely reunion.” Anderson says, “She’s such a force of nature anywhere, really, but in this character, specifically, she has such a comfort zone that it’s just fun to be in her orbit.” Hennesy was encouraged that the show’s new head writers, Shelly Altman and Jean Passanante, were inspired to write her in. “They are chicks — yay, girl power! They understand, I think, that Diane is something slightly different, kind of off the norm, she’s a woman of a certain age who gets the joke and takes no prisoners without being catty or bitchy, and I think that women want to see that.” All in all, she says, “It’s wonderful to be back. This week, Julian and Alexis spend some quality time with baby Leo, and the proud pop also introduces the little guy to his older half sibs, Lucas and Sam. “It seems like the Jerome family is growing by leaps and bounds, which bodes well for me and Maura [West, Ava],” notes William deVry (Julian). Indeed, since moving to Port Charles in 2013, Julian has gone from zero kids to three, but this is his first go-round with a baby. “The idea of having a child to raise from the very beginning and being a part of his life from the start is appealing to Julian on many levels,” the actor says. “But the idea of raising a child is far different from actually raising a child, and for this powerful mobster to leave the mob and try to be a family man, there are going to be obstacles in this fantasy. I don’t think it’s going to be all milk and cookies.” For Julian or Alexis, because when Olivia comes to pick up her son, she and Julian share a close moment — which Alexis witnesses....

Champagne is delivered to their table, but as he seemingly starts to pop the question, Ashley suddenly shows up and thwarts the moment. “Ashley thought maybe she was interrupting something, but nothing that important,” chuckles her portrayer, Eileen Davidson. A miffed Abby politely urges her mom to move along, but Stitch gets a phone call and has to leave for an emergency. After he exits, Abby reveals that Stitch was about to propose, though Ashley isn’t so sure. “Ashley is taken aback,” says Davidson. “After all, Ben had just said a few weeks before that he couldn’t stop thinking about her.” When a disheartened Abby leaves, Ashley is stunned when she finds an engagement ring in a glass of champagne. Adds Davidson, “Ashley will do her best to put this in perspective and do what’s right for her daughter.” But what will that be?

The conservative Avants, however, quickly discover Maya’s request of her sister and Nicole dreads broaching the topic with them. “No matter how bad Nicole thinks they’ll react, she knows it will be 10 times worse than that,” chuckles Reign Edwards (Nicole). “Especially when it comes to her father. He still thinks of Nicole as his little girl, but she’s grown up a lot!” Ultimately, Nicole wants to do the right thing by Maya. “Nicole loves her sister with all her heart,” says Edwards. “They’ve formed an incredibly special bond in the time since Nicole tracked her down and moved to Los Angeles. editors’ Digest Salutes The Best In Soaps Adam’s Family Values,

Brawl Or Nothing: Adam (Justin Hartley, l.) and Billy’s (Burgess Jenkins) discussion soon devolved into a free for all.

T

he buildup to “Gabriel Bingham” getting publicly outed as the presumed dead Adam Newman has been masterful, bringing our collective anticipation to an almost frenetic level. And when Y&R finally lit the fuse, we were treated to an impressive pyrotechnic show that didn’t disappoint. At first, Adam’s wife, Chelsea, kept his identity a secret so they could be together. But when she found out that Adam had helped Ian launch a cyber attack on Newman Enterprises, Chelsa realized that no matter how many skins are shed, a snake is still a snake and threw him out. At Jabot, she blurted out to Billy and Victoria that her brother is alive. She was met with disbelief even when she detailed how he’d survived that fiery car crash. “Look past the plastic surgery,” Chelsea urged. “You will see what has literally

been staring you straight in the face.... You know it’s Adam.” Billy paced the room in shock as Victoria processed the news. “I thought so many times how he reminded me of my brother,” she reflected. In flashbacks, Billy pieced together “Gabe” moments, and the truth sunk in. Looking gobsmacked, Billy leaned against a chair and seethed, “Son of a bitch. It’s him.” Meanwhile, Ian gleefully exposed his co-conspirator’s true identity to Phyllis, and she dropped the bomb on Victor and Jack. “I wondered about Bingham’s hatred of me,” Vic ruminated, then noticed Jack shifting uneasily and deduced that his foe had already known about Adam.

To Phyllis’s horror, Jack confirmed it. Cue another delicious war of words between the titans. (Jack had the best line: “Your ego has finally overtaken the space once occupied by your brain.”) Over at The Underground, Nick, Nikki and Sage were celebrating the arrest of Ian when Victoria entered, and as her account of Adam unfurled, Sage closed her eyes in pain, knowing what was coming next. Indeed, Victoria accused her sister-in-law of being in on the Gabe scam. When Nick confronted her, Sage whimpered, “I knew.” He responded with rage and disappointment, and Sage slinked off after promising him a divorce. On the near-deserted

Linsey Godfrey (CAROLINE, B&B)

induced tryst she’d had with his son, Thomas, before saying, “I do.” All hope that the baby might be her husband’s was dashed when he revealed that he’d had a vasectomy. As Caroline came clean about the one-night stand, Godfrey’s work captured her panic, fear and devastation, rendering the admission as memorable as it was poignant. As Ridge’s words sank in, Caroline’s heart visibly sank along with them. Her voice cracking and tremulous, nearly overwhelmed by nerves, a twitchy Caroline summoned all her courage and her confession tumbled out, each revelation more painful than the next as she tearfully recounted how she’d landed in bed with her stepson. Talking in circles and nearly incoherent, Caroline was inconsolable as she tried to delay the inevitable (identifying Thomas as the man she’d slept with). The fewer words she used, the more intense Godfrey’s emotion became, and finally, she uttered Thomas’s name. “I’m so sorry,” she repeated, gut-punched and stricken, bracing for his reaction. A shocked, angry Ridge refused to hear her defense of Thomas’s behavior, reducing her to a wail: “He’s the father of my baby!” Curled in a ball, her nose red and runny, Godfrey was a hot mess as Caroline purged her soul, the emotional toll striking as she exhausted her energy to bring the implosion of her character’s world to agonizing life — wringing her hands, flailing her arms, cupping her ashen face in her palms, her guilt and shame manifesting as broken sobs. The force of her commitment was felt in every beat of a bravura performance.

rooftop deck of the G.C.A.C., Adam sat pondering his next move. Billy strode in and took a seat across from him, speaking volumes wordlessly as they glowered at one another. The conversation started off as controlled and intense, but as they rehashed the details of the night Delia died after being run down by Adam, their voices escalated. Billy upended the table and both men jumped to their feet. Enter an eerily calm Victor, hands in his pockets. “Hello, Adam,” Victor smirked as he ambled up to his son — then slugged him to the ground. The fisticuffs continued as Billy began pummeling Adam, who didn’t defend himself. Jack intervened, holding his half brother back and ordering Adam to scram, which he did. He sought refuge at the bar downstairs, where Victor joined him. “I can’t even imagine how disappointed you must be, knowing that you were dancing on my grave the whole time I was never even in it,” Adam snarked. We were not expecting what came next: Victor’s eyes misted and he countered, “I missed my son.” But his statement ended on a less affectionate note: “I will fight you to the death.” Soon after, Adam was arrested, but the swath of emotional destruction his resurrection cut was just beginning to be felt. This leg of Adam’s story demanded a huge, satisfying payoff and Y&R delivered just that, rewarding viewers’ patience with sharp scripts and 앮 dynamic performances.

thumbs up!/ thumbs down! DAYS OF OUR LIVES Beat It

DAYS has done a fantastic job shifting away from stories that weren’t working, but the tales are moving at such a fast clip that key scenes are getting lost in the shuffle. For example, Steve was back in Salem for sev-

On DAYS, when Chad saw Andre for the first time, he said, “Who the hell are you?” Is it really possible that in all of his time living chez DiMera, Chad never saw a photo of either Tony or Andre? Also, when Justin came to confront Stefano, why didn’t he react to seeing Andre, who everyone believed was dead? And how did he know it wasn’t Tony, for that matter? ... On GH, Kiki’s real estate agent, Babs, snarked that she’d never get list price for Silas’s condo, since his murder had been all over the news. But when Franco entered, she asked Kiki, “Who’s this guy?” Um, only the guy who was arrested and stood trial for the aforementioned headline-grabbing murder! ... After learning that Y&R’s Adam is alive, how did both Victor and Billy know that they could find him on the rooftop of the G.C.A.C.?

thumbs down! BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Pair And Pair Alike

Watching Eric eloquently settle the feud between warring cousins Steffy and Ivy reminded us just how much he is missed in day-to-day storytelling. While we’d like to see the patriarch more invested in the FC power struggles, we’d actually love to see him get a personal life on-screen — and this would be the perfect time to renew his relationship with AWOL Donna. The show has teased us with a potential rematch, yet inexplicably, there has been no follow-through. On a soap which constantly invests in second, third and 10th chances (Hello, Ridge and Brooke, Liam and Steffy, Bill and Katie et al), we’d love to see Cupid’s arrow point toward these deserving exes.

SOAP OPERA DIGEST

eral weeks interacting at the hospital with Kayla and at the cop shop with Hope, but what we didn’t see was him crossing paths with his beloved sister, Adrienne. And we surmised that Theresa was aware of Paige’s tragic death only because she stopped by to help Eve donate her belongings for charity. As for poor JJ, his devastation over losing his young love happened off-screen. The manhunt for the Necktie Killer and Bo’s quest to return home to Hope are certainly suspenseful, but playing the emotional beats of a story goes a long way toward engaging viewers.

B&B’s Eric and Donna (John McCook and Jennifer Gareis)

thumbs up! BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Man Overboard

With all that Thomas has been through in the past few weeks — wrestling with his feelings for Caroline; sleeping with her while she was, apparently unbeknownst to him, under the influence of pills and alcohol; Caroline’s marriage to his father and apparent pregnancy by him — it is understandable that Thomas would feel the urge to act out in a major way.

He’s handled all that’s come his way less than gracefully (sleeping with interns and punching Ridge in the face), but this self-destructive bender is not altogether unrealistic behavior for a troubled single guy in his 20s with good looks and a flashy lifestyle. This current path is providing a lot for Thomas and those in his orbit to contend with, and it could be interesting to see him climb out of the hole he’s digging for himself with his reckless 앮 actions.

Second Opinion When DAYS brought Eric back in 2012, they recast with Greg Vaughan and gave him an unexpected story — Eric had become a priest. Vaughan made us believe it with the honesty and conviction he brought to his portrayal. But Eric didn’t wear those vestments for long. A scandal (Kristen drugged him, then taped herself having sex with him) stripped Eric of his duties. Though he was eventually cleared, he left the church. Since then, Eric has spent his time in loser relationships (Nicole, Serena) in which he’s again been the dupe — and this guy is no dope. Eric — and Vaughan — deserve better. If DAYS can’t find him a suitable partner, here’s a thought: Why not have Eric go on a retreat, do some soulsearching and conclude that the priesthood truly is his calling? There’s no shortage of Salemites who could benefit from his counseling, and even add some amateur sleuthing to solve crimes. A priest can be devout, down-to-earth and funny. Kinda like Eric. — Stella Bednarz 31

Q This week, Hilary finally wakes up from that coma, which means her portrayer, Mishael Morgan, is back after giving birth to her son, Niam, on August 9. Soap Opera Digest: Welcome back, Mishael, and congratulations to you and your husband on Niam! Mishael Morgan: Thank you so much. It feels good to be back and he’s been such a blessing. Digest: Hilary’s story has been going great guns while you were gone. Have you been tuning in? Morgan: Everybody has asked me that and I assumed I would be watching and I really intended to. I thought the eight weeks that I took off would have a little bit of a vacation feel to it but yeah, no! This amazing chapter has been a lot more work than I anticipated [laughs]. So, no, I didn’t have time to watch the show, but I’ve been following tweets and I’ve heard that it’s been awesome. I’ll try to catch up soon. I know plenty has happened. Were you excited to get back

It was weird. I felt eight weeks would be enough time off when I requested it, but after my weeks were flying by. I was telling myself, “Maybe I’m not ready!” Digest: Did you feel emotionally prepared for your maternity leave to end? Morgan: As soon as I went back to work, it felt so natural and it also felt necessary. I needed that space to recoup with work and then come back home to Niam, which was really nice. At first, I went back to work for only a couple of days, so it made for a nice transition and it gave me a little break from

because we’ve both been home together and doing this as a team, so we know each other’s faith in each other. In the beginning with the changing-of-the-diaper thing, I was a little worried because my husband would get flustered, but he got over it and he’s doing fine. Digest: How did you decide on your son’s name? Morgan: We had two names kicking around. We had Niam and Mikael. Right after he was born, my husband went to get something to eat and while he was gone for that hour and when Niam would cry, I would say, “Oh, calm down, Niam.” That was the first name that would come to my head. When my husband came back, I asked, “What name have you been thinking of since he’s been born?” and he said Niam. So, that’s how we decided. Digest: What has surprised you most about being a new mom? Morgan: I’m surprised how well Niam has fit into our lives, but what really surprised me was how painful breast-feeding really is and how much destruction a tiny little mouth with no teeth can cause. That was a huge surprise [laughs]. Digest: Did any of your Y&R pals meet the baby before you came back to work? Morgan: Christel [Khalil, Lily] did! She came by and it was so funny. Niam can get a little fussy when he’s awake, especially if he sits there and does nothing. But Christel just picked him up and he sat on her lap for an hour and a half and he was so calm. He didn’t say anything. It was so bizarre. I was going, “What’s wrong with this kid?” but Christel said, “Aw, he just loves me.” Digest: What kind of reception did you get from your co-stars on your return? Morgan: Everyone has been so amazing. They want to see pictures and are excited to have me back. They’ve been really happy for me and very supportive. I couldn’t ask for any better co-stars, for sure. Digest: Will your husband need to return to Toronto anytime soon? Morgan: He’s actually going back [shortly] 35

being a mom. Digest: How was it getting back into the Hilary groove? Morgan: I feel I was able to get into my work-mode place pretty easily. The thing I really loved about being back is that I felt like myself again. Obviously, I knew I would miss Niam right away, but as soon as I got onstage, I felt like myself. I actually felt more empowered to work. It was like, “This is what I do.” There was this pride about being Mishael Morgan again. I feel like there’s more balance in my life, but maybe when Niam starts crawling around and getting involved in things, it’ll be completely different. We’ll see. Digest: Did you have any problems with learning lines again? Morgan: I was worried about that a little bit because I felt like maybe I wouldn’t be as prepared. When I got the scripts, I didn’t have a lot of time to prep, so I was a little worried that I might be rusty, but it hasn’t been too bad. So far, so good. Digest: Have you been bringing Niam to work with you? Morgan: That’s what I was going to do originally, but my husband is still here from Toronto, so he’s been taking care of Niam. We’ve been playing it by ear and so far, I haven’t needed to bring Niam to work. I haven’t been on set consistently since I’ve gone back. I had one full day and the other days have only been a few hours, so it hasn’t been too bad. I also live pretty close to the studio and that helps a lot. Digest: How has your husband been handling that arrangement? Have you gotten any urgent phone calls or texts when you’re at work? Morgan: No, he’s an amazing dad! I don’t even think twice about leaving Niam at home with him. I remember one of my cousins was always anxious to get home to her baby and we were like, “Why? Isn’t he with his dad?” And she would be like, “Yes, but he doesn’t know what to do all of the time!” I haven’t had any of those concerns. I think it’s

for a week. There are some renovations finishing up in our basement in Toronto, so he needs to be there. We’ve been talking about it and wondering, “Are we going to be able to do this?” But we realized, “We can do this.” I’m Niam’s mom. I can be with him for one week. It’s going to be an interesting time,

They’ve Got It Covered Q When Morgan returned to the Y&R studio, she was greeted by a myriad of gifts from fans, including this blanket (r.). “It’s amazing,” the actress marvels. “It’s huge and has two of Niam’s pictures on it, with his name and date of birth. It’s so beautiful and so thoughtful. I will keep it forever.” Morgan is bowled over by the gesture. “Y&R fans are the best. They’re so supportive and they care for you as a person, not just the character you play. They see us every day, but we don’t see them as often, so we don’t realize how involved we are in other people’s lives. To get a reminder from them is really nice. It’s one of the reasons why I love being an actress!” 36

but it’s also week that I’m going to be off, so I’m sure it’ll be fine. I’ll just call Christel if I need a break. Digest: The fans have been anxious for Hilary to wake up. Their feelings for this character could have been much different considering the things she’s done. Morgan: Oh, I know that. When I first started, I kept repeating in my head before every single scene, “She needs to be likable. She needs to be likable.” Even though she was doing these bad things, I knew it was important that she had to be likable instead of a one-dimensional, mean person. It’s easy to fall into that trap, but you have to remember to make her human. Digest: Anything you’d like to say to the Y&R fans who’ve been anxiously awaiting your return? Morgan: I am so thankful that the fans have been so patient. I’m so flattered that they want to see what’s going to happen with Hilary, but that they also like me. So, thank 앮 you for loving me!

Soap Opera Digest: Greg, you joined Y&R as Kevin in 2003, two years before Camryn wrapped playing Cassie. What do you remember about each other back then? Greg Rikaart: Cammie, can I throw you under the bus? Camryn Grimes: Totally. Rikaart: I remember she had a big crush on Michael Graziadei [ex-Daniel]. Grimes: [Laughs] That would still be true. Rikaart: What’s funny, she was the young’un, but at the same time she was the veteran because she’d been there longer than the other young people. Grimes: I remember I was really excited about Greg because he played this super-creepy character. Digest: What was your initial reaction to working together after Camryn came back to play Mariah? Grimes: It was so funny, one day we were like, “Hey, we have scenes together! That’s weird.” And it was so random. Then, every now and then we’d have more scenes together and we’d say, “This is funny.” Rikaart: It was fun from the beginning because they were such an unlikely couple, which is part of their charm and the fun. I didn’t think of our scenes as being any different from the scenes that I’d shoot with anyone else, but I’d see us on TV and I’m like, “Oh, that’s why it’s different!” When you’re in it, you can’t really tell. Digest: What were your impressions as you really got to know each other? Grimes: I’ve always thought Greg was an incredibly talented actor — Rikaart: Aw, go on! Grimes: And I still do. I discovered that I was learning a lot about timing and beats with the

comedy we were playing. I’ve never really done funny stuff and I was really grateful to be working with him. Rikaart: She surprised me with the way she portrays Mariah. I just remember Cammie being this sweet, little girl [as Cassie], but both she and Mariah have an edge to them that’s not harsh or off-putting. It’s just a complexity there that you don’t associate with a kid, and that’s how I knew her all those years ago. So it’s been a fun discovery of, “Oh, no, this is a fully realized grown-up who is fun to play with.” Digest: Was there a point that you noticed your characters shared this quirky chemistry? Rikaart: I don’t know if I have a particular moment where I was like, “Oh, this is working.” Grimes: I agree, but at one point I did come up to him and say, “People like this!” It surprised me, as well, just because it was an unlikely pairing and I think once we started to feel like the writers had a thing for us, then it picked up speed. At least for me, it made us want to put more work into how to get the scenes just right. Digest: All of a sudden, you guys were the ones with the one-liners and providing levity. Rikaart: I always remember Jeanne Cooper [ex-Katherine] saying, “No matter how serious a scene is, you can’t forget to have fun.” And even in the midst of, “There’s a dead body and we’re stuck in this cabin,” we still allowed for the characters to be who they are and say inappropriate things. It’s been super-fun. Even before there was a nice reaction from the audience, I was getting instantaneous feedback from everyone

I always think Kevin is really fun when he gets to be snarky. He’s a perfect cohort for a relay race. Grimes: And Kevin balances out Mariah really well, so she’s always better when she has someone to play off. And I think that’s what really works and where you get all those quippy sort of lines that I can throw out there. I appreciate being considered at all. Again, I’m really glad that the fans and the people keep asking about me because I think that means something to Ken, the producers and, hopefully, the folks at NBC. Digest: Have you had any conversations with the show about coming back? Ashford: I haven’t in a while. I’ve had some other folks, guys like managers and agents, checking in and that’s kind of the way it goes. You have to keep knocking on the door every now and then and say, “What’s up?” It gives them time. It’s like a great ocean liner. It doesn’t just turn around on a dime. So it’s nice to know that I can at least get word in to the captain [Ken Corday] every now and then. Digest: Would you be open to a return? Ashford: Yeah, I would be open. I’ve auditioned for a lot of different things and realized that I was given a lot of wonderful leeway with the things that I got to do as Jack. I’m also always open to coming back as someone else. Digest: Has there been a part of you that wishes you were there to play alongside Stephen Nichols (Steve), Melissa Reeves (Jennifer), Judi Evans (Adrienne), Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) and other members of the cast? Ashford: Absolutely. Mary Beth and I work together on THE BAY and she talks about how fun it is at DAYS. You go in and play with people who get it and who work in a certain way. Judi’s a wonderful actor and Missy is obviously amazing. I think it’s a good time for them. Digest: Who are you in touch with from DAYS? Ashford: Mostly, it’s Mary Beth. Judi has worked on THE BAY and I see her from time to time. I’ve also talked with Patsy Pease [ex-Kimberly], who plays a very interesting character on the next season 45

SOAP OPERA DIGEST

Soap Opera Digest: Have you been aware of all the chatter from Jack fans, advocating your return to DAYS? Matthew Ashford: Yes, I have. And it’s been kind of wonderful. I’ve been watching from the sidelines and I’m aware of it, and it’s encouraging, and I appreciate it because it shows that, I guess if you were on the stage, you’ve left the stage and walked into the wings, but the applause is following. It’s a wonderful feeling as an actor and performer to know that people not only recognize it but they’d like to see more. Digest: In our July 13 issue, DAYS Executive Producer Ken Corday was asked about the possibility of bringing you back. He said, “Let’s talk about Matt for a minute. Jack fell down an elevator shaft, was impaled and is dead, dead, dead…. That’s not to say that he won’t come back some day, but you have to watch it with the audience that they don’t say, ‘Oh, our trust is ruined, Ken. You keep killing people and they keep returning.’ ” What is your reaction to hearing that DAYS has opened the door a crack for you to possibly return one day? Ashford: Before now, I never really heard the impaled part [laughs]. All I ever heard was that Roman said, “Jack died a hero.” So that’s all I know. I didn’t know any of the grisly details. But in the halls with the producers over at NBC, they made the mystery kind of in a clearer tone, clearer imagery, about how dead Jack is in the storyline right now. I’ve been doing this quite a long time and I realize they put a lot of focus into these characters coming back, and then there are other characters coming in. A Martinez [Eduardo] is there as well, I understand. Vincent Irizarry [Deimos] is also there. That’s a lot of firepower. You have a lot of wonderful actors at DAYS. I think they’re filled up by now. Of course,

of THE BAY that hasn’t been released yet. It was pretty cool to catch up with her because we also had the 50th anniversary of our alma mater, the North Carolina School of the Arts. It started the same year as DAYS. So I went back for that, to catch up with my old classmates and see a lot of people who came before and after I was there. I think Patsy was working. She wasn’t able to be there. I also talk occasionally to Charles Shaughnessy [exShane], who is often working around the country performing. Digest: When you think of DAYS, what memories stand out for you? Ashford: The Cruise of Deception was a big adventure. The whole arc of coming in and beginning with Stephen and Mary Beth, and then the ensuing arc with Missy — those were great times and it went on for years. When I came back in 2011, that was a full year of a very clear storyline. It’s very memorable, as well. Digest: You mentioned Patsy Pease appearing on the THE BAY. What can you say about your character, Steve, in the new season? Ashford: We’re taking some twists and turns. I’m working with some new people. The Garrett family is hit with a very large

obstacle. My character is part of the Garrett family by marriage, but he’s kind of on the outside looking in. Digest: You have had some changes in your personal life. You now have a son, Henry, 2. You also have two adult daughters, Grace, 23, and Emma, 18. What differences have you noticed raising a boy? Ashford: Henry is nonstop action. He runs, moves, pushes, pulls, climbs. I was talking to Mary Beth about him and she laughed, because she raised two sons. She said, “Oh, yeah, they stay busy.” I used to be able to sit with one of my daughters in my lap and read. But Henry is just busy. He’s a bundle of joy. I have four older brothers, one older sister and two younger sisters, but I never saw myself as the baby boy. So my experience with baby boys is a little limited. Digest: You and Lana Buss also have a daughter due in November. What are the differences starting a family at this stage in your life? Ashford: Our daughter’s birth is just around the corner, November 14 or so. As

for the differences starting a family at this stage in my life, I’m older [laughs]. My energy is what it is, so I have to plan a little more. I’m also enjoying it because I realize these moments come and go so quickly. My daughters are 18 and 23. So I’m really trying to live in the moment and enjoy the moment. Digest: How did you and Lana meet? Ashford: We were doing a play together, Antony and Cleopatra. We started out as just good friends. Lana’s a good actress and smart and funny. Obviously, my marriage came to an end and it’s been really rough, honestly, with the daughters. But hopefully we’re all moving toward a happier future. Lana and I didn’t expect to be having kids. But life just finds a way, as Jeff Goldblum said in Jurassic Park [laughs]. And here we are. Digest: You tweeted about attending your daughter Emma’s cabaret performance in July. How is she doing? Ashford: Emma is going to graduate this year from LACHSA, the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. She wants to pursue singing and musicals, so she was doing a cabaret. It was an extra part of

their classwork. It was wonderful. Emma has always had musicality to her. She’s a beautiful young lady, and her mother has trained her well, so she has a lot of talent. Performing really brings Emma happiness, it makes me happy that she’s doing it. It’s a hard road to be an actor. But she’s following her dreams, and as a parent I have to stand back and let her go for it. And she’s worked very hard at it. Digest: What would you want to say to your fans who have been so supportive? Ashford: Again, I really, really appreciate their support and being there for me. They’ll share memories that sometimes I don’t remember. They’ll bring up something that Jack or Jennifer did. There should be a THIS IS YOUR LIFE show for longtime actors who have worked on daytime soaps. The fans could come out and share their memories, which the actors may not remember, because the characters have led such busy and exciting lives. The fans have a wonderful energy. When things get kind of quiet as an actor, it keeps 앮 me going. 47

SOAP OPERA DIGEST

Scene Heard BED SORE Before ever shooting a love scene as GH’s Dillon, Robert Palmer Watkins had to shoot Dillon shooting a love scene (opposite Kirsten Storms’s Maxie in the movie their characters are starring in). Watkins reports, “The scene where Dillon kept envisioning Lulu in Maxie’s place was really fun to shoot, because we literally did the scenes multiple times and switched in Kirsten for Emme [Rylan, Lulu]. It made for a complex day of shooting because of the camera angles they were using and we had to look directly into the camera at points, which was weird. There was a moment where Maxie was straddling me on the bed and they’ve got the camera up above on the ceiling, coming down behind her shoulder,

and she’d be on top of me, then they’d move her off of me, put the camera in her place and I would have to stare in the camera and go through the emotions of realizing I’m seeing Lulu. It was very strange to look directly into the camera and while I’m doing this weird stuff — half-naked, mind you — Kirsten is next to me, like, right next to me on the bed. She’s not in the shot, but she’s just watching me do this into the camera! It was a strange experience, very bizarre.”

VOCAL SUPPORT

A can’t say enough good things about his DAYS co-star Kassie.

52

When A Martinez (Eduardo) learned that Kassie DePaiva (Eve) was out at DAYS, he took the news hard. “I’m so profoundly disappointed that Kassie is off the show,” he says. “I understand that her character was pushed into some very dark corners, in terms of what Eve did, but I find it really sad that Kassie was shown the door, rather than resuscitated before our eyes. Her work is phenomenal. Kassie is one of the greatest teammates you could ever have. She brought the light day after day, and she has attended to other people’s stuff. She made everybody else’s journey through the day easier by the nature of her kindness and her profound empathy as a human being. Beyond the fact that she’s a kick-ass actor, she’s killer beautiful. I think letting her go was a mistake and I hope that it gets addressed at some point.”

Although Melissa Claire Egan’s (Chelsea, Y&R) husband, Matt Katrosar, works for CBS Sports, he’s still very much invested in her daytime job and faithfully watches Y&R — even her love scenes with Justin Hartley (Adam). “Matt watches all of my scenes,” says the actress. “It’s nice that he’s supportive, but he also takes notes. After he watched my first love scene with Justin, Matt called him and gave him about eight things that I don’t like to do. So, this is why love scenes are never uncomfortable for Justin and me because we’re too busy laughing.” However, Egan says that while her husband is willing, she no longer runs lines at home. “Matt’s a very smart guy and great at his job but he’s not an actor,” she shares. “He’s very loud and it’s distracting to me. I’ll tell him, ‘Babe, can you do it lighter?’ and then he whispers. So, yeah, he knows to keep his day job.”

I remember, I said to Norman, ‘Out of respect, I need to meet and talk with someone who is transsexual.’ I had friends who were gay, but that was it. I can’t remember her name, but Norman flew a woman down from San Francisco. She was born a man and was now a woman — and we had the most amazing day. Norman was so generous. He set us up in a room where we had lunch and sat and talked. There were so many questions, and we had the best possible time. I got to know all about everything, from the electrolysis for the beard to how to take your car into the shop, because it’s different if you’re a man or a woman when you take the car in. The thing that I got from our meeting was respect. You can’t help but respect these strong people who were born in the wrong body and did something about it.” 53

*Fudge has a pretty long shelf life when properly wrapped and stored. Wrap fudg e in wax or parchment paper and then plac e in a plastic storage baggie. Fudge will keep for two weeks at room temperature or three mon ths in the freezer. (Do not store in the refrigerat or.) Always use caution when working ** with boiling sugar. Keep children and pets out of the kitchen, be careful when transporting, and never touch or taste hot mixture.

KELLY’S CACHE (Eva, B&B) Q Last year for Scott Clifton’s [Liam, B&B] birthday party [his birthday falls on Halloween], Darin [Brooks, Wyatt, B&B/her fiancé] and I came up with a very lastminute DIY costume, as we had no time to find one during the week. We decided to go with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere from Pretty Woman. Not only is it one of my favorite movies, but the costume is super-easy to make!

How-To:

Here’s what you’ll need: For Vivian

1. Take the plain white T-shirt outside (we could only find a long-sleeved, so we cut the sleeves off) lay it flat, and using the blue spray paint, spray in horizontal lines like this on both sides. 2. Then take your black paint and do the same. 3. Once both sides are done, let it dry a few minutes. Then

• Thigh-high boots • Blonde wig • Necklaces • Bracelets • A plain white T-shirt • A plain white tank top • Red blazer • Spray paint (blue and black)

• A ring (a giant key ring or shower ring will do) • Scissors (try to use fabric scissors; you will see why!) • A sewing kit or safety pins

For Edward

• Gray or black suit • Tie • Briefcase • Old ’90s cell phone, if you can get one

• Silver spray for hair color 72

1.

take your scissors and cut out the armpits in a half-moon shape, leaving some material at the top to attach to the ring. (This is why fabric scissors are important! It was hard to cut straight, but when it was on, you couldn’t tell.) 4. Do the same with the tank top, leaving the bottom longer to wrap.

3.

SOAP OPERA DIGEST

5. Sew or pin the pieces around the ring. 6. Once it is completely dry, get dressed and don’t forget to tie the red blazer around your waist!

3.

5.

Makeup:

I did a smoky eye and a red lip — one of my favorite looks! • For my eyes, I used Chanel Les 4 Ombres palette in Mystère. • For my lips, I used M.A.C lip liner in Redd, and then I mixed Charlotte Tilbury [K.I.S.S.I.N.G] Night Crimson with Smashbox Cherry Smoke Be Legendary lipsticks. Q On October 27, DAYS OF OUR LIVES 50 YEARS, a photo-driven book that takes a look back at five decades of NBC’s longest-running soap, will be released. Here, its author, Co-Executive Producer Greg Meng, talks about putting together what is sure to be a keepsake for every fan.

All about the new book celebrating 50 years of DAYS 74

Soap Opera Digest: When did you come up with the idea for the book? Greg Meng: I pitched this book five or more years ago to Sourcebooks as part of a trilogy. I had pitched the first book, which was Days of our Lives 45 Years: A Celebration in Photos, and then the second was the Better Living book, and the third was going to be the 50th anniversary book. Looking back at other books that had been done, and the websites that are so wonderful with information, I thought, “Well, this needs to be bigger. This needs to be an art book. This needs to be a picture of what the essence of DAYS OF OUR LIVES is about. Not every fact and figure, not a yearbook of everybody that’s ever been on the show, not a list of storylines, nothing by decades. It needs to reflect the soul of what the show is about.” And so that was my goal. I didn’t want it to be dated, ever. Digest: How did you start the process of breaking down the chapters? Meng: Actually, I had many conversations with myself in the shower, thinking about, “Okay, how do you begin this? Where did this all begin? Well, it started with the original family.” And then I thought, “There are four families. The Hortons, and eventually the Bradys, the

and Cops” was a fun one to do, and believe it or not, it took the longest to do even though it’s a short chapter. I had layouts that I liked, like the Larry Welch wedding to Hope. In the final spread, I took his campaign poster and the wedding photo of Hope and Larry and we created a gold frame around it. I thought that spoke volumes, to put that campaign poster with the artwork. It wasn’t just about Bo coming and taking her

history, would you include, specifically those two elements?” The Stalker was such an important story. It was a long run on our show, but it had so many interesting elements, and honestly, the artwork was really good and I thought it told a great story. We created the police reports and files on each victim and got creative with it. And then the coronation had incredible artwork. Richard Bloore, who’s our current costume designer, designed those costumes, and I just thought that was some way to show ageless fashion without getting into the decades and the years. And then it aligned perfectly with the coronation 75

DiMeras and the Kiriakases.” But I was thinking about how important the Horton family was in establishing what the show was about, with their strong, Midwestern family values. And then branching out from there: “Okay, what are these other families?” and “What else is important on the show?” Then I started breaking down these ideas into chapters. Digest: What was your general process? Meng: I worked inside and out. I would be at the office, and then go to NBC and go through the boxes that were available to us, digging, digging, digging. I worked with Elizabeth Gulick, who’s worked with me on the last two books and is the graphic designer. She’s over on the CBS Radford lot, so I would literally leave here at 5 or 6 in the evening, go over there, and we would work until 3 in the morning for weeks on end, and then I’d be on the freeway at 5:30 showering and coming back in. Digest: Did you have a set number of pages when you started? Meng: No, because I didn’t want to limit myself. It just kind of evolved, and then I had to beg the publisher for another 120 pages [laughs]. After they started seeing some of the chapters, they gave it to us. They were lovely to work with. Digest: Do you have a favorite chapter? Meng: I have different chapters that are favorites: “Unsinkable Women” and “Unstoppable Men” come to mind. “Spies

Member Of The Wedding: “There’s a page there, and it really was not in the show, but it was the reception of Roman [Wayne Northrop] and Marlena’s [Deidre Hall] wedding at Chasen’s and there was a fabulous photo of [the late] Betty Corday [co-creator/former executive producer] and I just thought it was great to incorporate some things like that organically.”

Meet The Candidate: This spread with Larry Welch’s (Andrew Masset) campaign poster and photo from his 1984 wedding to Hope (Kristian Alfonso) is one of Meng’s faves.

massacre, which I thought was a good example of the magnitude of the production values and acting, and utilizing characters, and playing other characters within the roles. I thought it was a great picture, even though it may not be the most talked-about storyline. It really presented a lot. Digest: What has been the reaction to the finished product so far? Meng: I’ve had people here in the office who look at it and take it home and come back and just say, “Ooh, this is the essence of the 76

show.” And that personally was the most complimentary thing I could hear. But it’s for the fans, so I can’t wait to see how that registers. Digest: Are you excited about the book tour? Meng: Yes, and the cast is excited about it, too. I can’t think of a better time — who has 50 years? I just enjoy it and I love getting the feedback and hearing what the 앮 fans have to say. Please settle an argument between me and my stubborn sister. She insists that another actress played the role of Brooke Logan on B&B. I am absolutely sure that’s not true, since Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke) is an original cast member! Please set my sister straight! Thank you. K.V., Moorpark, CA A Well, you’re both right. Lang origi-

nated the role and has played Brooke for the past 28 years. However, there were two instances where another actress filled in for Lang. In 1987, Catherine Hickland (ex-Lindsay, ONE LIFE TO LIVE et al) stepped in as a temporary recast for two episodes when the actress was on sick leave, and 10 years later, Sandra Robinson (then-Sandra Ferguson; Christine, THE BAY et al) briefly took over for 15 episodes in 1997 while Lang was out on maternity leave when the actress gave birth to her third child, daughter Zoe.

Q

Can you please tell me the name of the song and the artist that sang it on the 9/14 GH episode during the Sonny and Carly montage? It is so beautiful. I think Y&R used it for a segment with Sharon and Nick at one time. Irene S., via email 88

What ever happened to Cane’s mother on Y&R? I can’t remember the character’s name, but she was played by that famous GH actress. I do recall that she left Genoa City in a hurry, but I’ve never heard her mentioned since. B.D., via email A Y&R’s Genevieve was portrayed by

Genie Francis, GH’s iconic Laura. In 2012, Cane accused Genevieve of hiring a young woman to pose as his late sister, Samantha. Genevieve insisted she would never perpetrate such a cruel hoax, then confronted the woman, who didn’t confess to anything, but reacted strangely to Colin’s name. We never found out who was behind the scheme as the gal was

DAYS EDITION! about the death of Will.

BAD THINGS HAPPEN IN THREES I just finished watching the October 9 episode of DAYS and was on the edge of my seat wondering if they would actually have Will Horton be the third victim of

the Necktie Killer, but they did it. Will is a legacy character who we watched grow up on-screen and I am so angry about this. I cried after today’s episode and have been in a funk all day. This is unforgivable. Josh M., via email

UNHAPPY ENDING In my 30-plus years

“Will [Guy Wilson] is a legacy character [on DAYS] who we watched grow up onscreen and I am so angry about this.”

as a DAYS viewer, I have never been more disgusted by a storyline than the violent strangulation death of a gay legacy character. As the mother of a young son who was struggling with his sexuality, we were able to watch Will come out, fall in love and get married together. I was able to show him that the world was becoming more accepting, and that young men like him were worthy of love. Then, I was able to tell him that gay characters could make mistakes and be forgiven. Now, I regret ever encouraging him to watch. While heterosexual couples from the show have had their share of tragedy and happiness and happy endings, DAYS’s one gay couple, and the couple who had the first gay male wedding in daytime, has been given a grotesque and cruel ending as both actors left. There was an opportunity for a truly remarkable ending: a happy one. Melinda in Philadelphia

PAIN IN THE NECK “Thank you for your honest interview with Alison Sweeney [Sami] concerning the death of her onscreen son, Will.”

ON THE RECORD Thank you for your honest interview with Alison Sweeney [Sami] concerning the death of her on-screen son, Will. I agree with her 100 percent that it is a mistake and I can relate to her feelings of betrayal and hurt. I’ve watched DAYS for years and Will has always been a part of the show. When Chandler Massey joined the cast, Will quickly became my favorite character and, to be honest, the sole reason I kept tuning in. While the rest of the show spun its wheels with the typical soap drama, Will’s comingout story was a refreshing change of pace. Massey’s interactions with Deidre Hall [Marlena] as she

helped him come to terms with being gay, and then his romance with Freddie Smith [Sonny] were phenomenal. Truthfully, I still don’t understand why Will had to die. Will could have been allowed to slip into a coma, or couldn’t it have been revealed to just the audience that Will survived but didn’t want anyone to know? That he needed to get away from Salem and everyone to reflect on what his life had become? My only consolation is that on DAYS, no one stays dead for long. Marlena, Jack, Stefano and Kristen, among others, have been assumed dead but turned out to be alive. (EJ being alive also proves this point.) Hopefully, this unnecessary

I am very disappointed with the whole Salem Strangler and the people that have been killed so far. Poor Paige and now Will. It was heart-wrenching to watch Ben kill Will. I seriously hope they get him; he is one creepy person who I hope is not the father of Abigail’s baby. I am very upset that Will has been killed off instead of another character. I have watched DAYS for a very long time and this is just so unsettling. Holly G. from New York

WHERE THERE’S A WILL... DAYS has made a very big mistake by killing off Will Horton, a core member of the Bradys and Hortons who started on the show. It was a beautiful story of love for Will and Sonny. I am not gay, but loved the story. Many of the current and returning vets have done far worse than Will ever did but are still living and scheming. To sacrifice Will seems 93

killing of Will Horton will be reversed down the road. To quote Alison Sweeney: “It breaks my heart that there is no Will anymore.”

unfair. Please, Ken Corday [executive producer], fix this! I started watching the show because of Will and with him gone, there will be no desire to watch anymore and I have heard this from many other fans. S.N., via email

OUT WITH A BANG I recently watched the show where Will was killed by the Necktie Killer. The scenes were disturbing and

hard to watch and I was riveted to the screen the whole time. The new writers have really upped their game, and although I hated to see Will go, he went out with a bang! I have watched DAYS for 30 years and I have never enjoyed it more. Keep up the good work!

I find it a real tragedy that DAYS chose to kill off one of the only two gay characters on the show. With so many other characters with absolutely no storyline, choosing the gay character to kill makes me question the intent of the writers and their “new direction”. In today’s world, having gay characters offers so many story possibilities that were never explored. For shame, DAYS! D.B., Washington, DC

A REAL MISS

Sorry to say, I am not concerned that Will was killed off. The writers really screwed that character up. I always liked Will; considering his childhood and a mother like Sami, he became a good character. Then, for whatever reason, the writers decided to make him just like his mother: always me, never taking responsibility for anything, always someone else’s fault. Yes, the writers did a great injustice to a character that grew up with a lot against him. So sad!

I am writing in to say how sad I am that Will was killed off on DAYS! Fans have known and followed this character for ages, and to be killed off is just wrong! Thank you to Dylan Patton, Chandler Massey and Guy Wilson, the actors who brought Will to life! Will will be majorly missed! I hope that Mia at least gets mentioned and not just Sonny; after all, Mia was Will’s first love ever! I am a huge Will and Mia fan and I’ll always be! Best of luck, portrayers of Will! Here’s hoping Will will be back, as well as the other victims at some point! Kudos to everyone involved in this story!

FRANCO-FILE I just watched the 10/7 episode of GH, and I have to say, Franco brought me to tears. I don’t for one minute think he has become a new man, but when he talks with Nina and Kiki, he is so very sincere and authentic. He wants so much to help them and be there for them, and his words are so heartfelt, it just brought me to tears. That is the Franco I love to watch. In the past, I always rooted against him, and now I so want to see him enjoy his life. Go, Franco! Lori R., North Brookfield, MA

Q What was your last takeout order? “I had plain spaghetti with marinara sauce, which is something I could have easily made myself at home. But no, I had to order in because I didn’t feel like cooking, even though I usually love cooking.” Q What movie scene scared you when you were young? “Phantasm, where this weird metal ball flew around the mortuary and stabbed people in the head. I’ll never forget that thing. It terrified me!”

Q What era would you like to live in? “Nowhere in the past. I’m way too interested in modern technology and I can’t imagine myself without a cell phone. What would I do without texting? If I could, I would rather live in the future and have a car that flies.” Q How are you in touch with your masculine side? “I’m too independent, but not because I want to be. I just haven’t found the right man yet.” 96

Q Would you date a man who didn’t like dogs? “No way! I love dogs and he’s got to love dogs. I think someone not liking dogs tells you a lot about what kind of person he is.”
