Polish Market Special Edition For CeBIT 2013
Polish Market If there are decisions that can be called “business bull’s eye”, then the decision of Hanover Messe in 1986 on the organization of the CeBIT technology trade fair is certainly one. And it is not about looking at the organizer’s financial statements. There is nothing to worry about here, given that within a few years’ time the event became the world’s leading trade fair, where an ordinary exhibition stand needs to be applied for as early as a year prior to the expo, and a better one even more in advance. It is mostly about the role CeBIT played in the development of the European and world ICT sector, including especially the comprehensive implementation of information technology in all sectors of the global economy. Are we equally attractive when it comes to supply? We do not have a company like Nokia or Siemens, but the Polish ICT sector is made up of hundreds of thousands of businesses which, although rather small, often shine in their respective market niches. Arguably, Polish business service sector counts among European champions, being one of
the magnets attracting foreign direct investments to Poland. We have thousands of companies able to produce top-class software - from entertainment (such as “The Witcher” game) to highly specialized (such as simulators for operators of offshore oil rigs). We also have companies that - like ABC Data - are already the leaders of the equipment distribution market, at least in Central and Eastern Europe. Are we able to show it to the world? CeBIT is a great window of opportunity which can be used even better now that its importance has been recognized by the Ministry of Economy. Last year, Poland had a national stand, which benefited Polish exhibitors. The Ministry’s debut was so successful that Poland got promoted to become one of the strategic partners of CeBIT 2013. Our exhibitors will be able to showcase their products under the slogan “Do it with Poland” at Polish national booths in as many as four specialized pavilions. And, we know it, they can attract the world’s interest. We, in Poland, know that. :: Krystyna Woźniak-Trzosek Editor-in-Chief President Rynek Polski Publishers Co. Ltd.

To make economy grow Janusz Piechociński, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy talks to “Polish Market.”
Over a month ago, President Bronisław Komorowski appointed you as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy. This is a huge challenge. What aims did you set yourself to improve Poland’s economic performance? The mission of the Ministry of Economy and mine as the Minister of Economy is to create the best conditions in Europe to do business. To this end, I will first of all take steps to improve the legal framework of doing business in Poland. An important element of support for our companies is investment incentives such as special economic zones, which is why we want to extend their lifetime. A vital part of the economy is energy. In this sector, too, legal regulations need to be adjusted to the changing market conditions and the EU requirements. The Ministry of Economy has prepared a package of energy bills that a re

being examined by the government. After that, they will be going through a long legislative process. The euro zone has recently been an object of a heated debate. Does it make sense to consider Poland’s accession to the euro zone if there is already talk of its meltdown? When joining the European Union, we made a commitment to adopt the euro with no time frame being specified though. If you look at it from the economic point of view, entering the euro area could be beneficial under certain conditions. I believe that the primary benefit of being a member of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is that it would enable to reduce transaction costs and exchange rate risk, and therefore to curb business operating expenses. Another positive aftermath would be boosting domestic and foreign investment. Before making the decision to accede to the EMU, we should, however, consider any potential threats. I believe that joining the euro area Poland will, unfortunately, run a risk of losing its economic competitiveness when the ECB’s monetary policy proves pro-cyclical, i.e. not tailored to the real market situation. Portugal, Spain and Greece were among those affected. At this point, I would like to draw attention to the fact that the recent global economic crisis has highlighted the advantages and the significance of the floating exchange rate. It serves as a sort of an automatic stabilizer, making the economy quickly adjust to adverse external conditions and mitigate a negative impact on exports. That is why, my
opinion is that adopting the euro at a rate other than that implied by the long-term balance would create yet another threat for Poland’s economic competitiveness. We should also keep in mind that even if there are arguments in favour of the euro, this does not mean that we are ready and we can adopt it. The measure of EMU readiness are objective parameters, the so-called Maastricht criteria. Special Economic Zones were created to exist until 2020, i.e. for 7 years from now on, but there are opinions that it is worth considering their lifetime. What do you think of it? I believe that special economic zones should continue to exist, as they proved to be an effective instrument of stimulating investment and job creation. According to the data from the third quarter of 2012, over PLN 83.8 billion were invested and 186 thousand new jobs were created in special economic zones. All governments provide assistance to entrepreneurs. Poland cannot afford to deprive itself of this measure, especially that it has no other support instruments to replace it. EU funds for investment promotion and job creation have been virtually exhausted, and those under new operational programmes (2014-2020), probably less opulent, will be available no sooner than by the end of 2014. Therefore, together with the Ministry of Finance, we will develop criteria for the operation of special economic zones in the regions affected by the structural unemployment. We will also analyze the instruments and rules of providing assistance to investors. ::
Polish Market
E-service from strength to strength Bożena Lublińska-Kasprzak, President of the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP), talks to “Polish Market.”
The Polish ICT market, the value of which is estimated at EUR 20 billion, is not big yet, as compared, for instance, with the IT sector in Germany, valued at EUR 150 billion. However, it shows the fastest growth rate in the EU - 12% per annum. When granting subsidies to projects in this sector, PARP is also one of the architects of its growth. From this perspective, how do you evaluate the future of the IT sector and its impact on the competitiveness of the entire Polish economy? According to data from the Office of Electronic Communications, about 75% of Polish households have today access to the global network. Deloitte prepared three scenarios of Internet development in Poland: basic, dynamic and - the most optimistic one - a digital leap scenario. In all of them, it is expected that the number of web
6 :: polish market :: special edition 2013
users will grow, drawing the growth of Polish GDP. In the first scenario, in 2020 this number may grow to 18 million, in the second one - to 20 million, and in the third one - to as much as 28 million. What is more, the number of mobile internet users is expected to note the most rapid growth - their number will be 3.5-7 times greater than now. How does the number of web user translate into the growth of Polish GDP? In 2010 the Internet enabled the generation of 4.8% of GDP, or PLN 68 billion. In 2020 - depending on the scenario - the figure will be 9.5%, 10.2% or 13.1%. This amounts to PLN 247, 267 and as much as 345 billion, respectively. In the most optimistic scenario, the increase of investments related to the Internet will result in the GDP growth rate amounting to 5.3% in 2014. The value of the above mentioned indicators makes the IT sector a special interest to PARP.
Can the support of IT projects completed in Poland hold in any way the draining of Polish IT specialists by the German or American market? The Polish IT market is doing quite well. The IT specialists are one of the best earning groups of employees in Poland, and our companies are quite often exporting IT services. The financial resources distributed by PARP as part of measure 8.1 of the Operational Programme Innovative Economy also contribute to the fact that talented programmers stay in Poland. They have an opportunity to start their own, well-run business. The new businesses also create jobs for IT specialists. The projects eligible for subsidizing should have their “economic sense”. How can we evaluate the market success of e-services which were created as part of projects supported by PARP? The application documentation for measure 8.1 of the Operational Programme puts great emphasis on business aspects of the provision of the planned e-service. The entrepreneur completing an application for subsidy has to present, among others and an analysis of the competitors, substitutes for the planned e-service, a SWOT analysis, an outline of the marketing strategy, and an analysis of the e-service demand. Also the determination of innovative qualities of the eservice, evaluated at the stage of facultative substantial criteria evaluation, requires from the entrepreneur to indicate the competitive advantage. Of course, it is not possible to guarantee that the subsidized projects will be a market success. In particular, it has to be stressed that innovation always involves to some risk, and it is impossible to determine its market potential with absolute certainty. Nevertheless, the implementation results are satisfactory. The survival of start-ups supported by EU funds is much higher than in the case of similar market indicators. The best projects among those subsidized as part of measure 8.1 of the Operational Programme appear among winners of various competitions or
Polish Market on lists of the best growing IT companies, and most of all, they generate for their creators and investors real revenues, which is the basic measure of a market success. We hope that the ultimate balance of outlays and revenues from the implementation of this measure, which will be known only in a few years’ time, will show the actual and clear advantages for the Polish economy resulting from launching this type of tool for promoting the e-economy. Anyway, the existing results allow us to be optimistic. The applications received as part of subsequent editions are full of ideas for e-business. Based on them, is it possible to say anything about the special features of the Polish IT sector? Is the share of new technologies increasing? PARP’s experiences in implementing support programmes for the growth of businesses allow us to say that Polish businesses are very aware of all trends in technology and social interactions of the global and national economy. This however does not mean that the subsidized projects reflect these trends on an on-going basis based on examples originating from the Western markets. Most of all, we have to be aware of psychological, financial and technological barriers relating to the national recipients of e-services. For instance, the saturation of the Polish market with mobile devices such as tablets or stateof-the-art smartphones, development of broadband networks, and in particular, of mobile networks, the financial potential of the Polish public with respect to payment for electronic services - these are factors which make the Polish market much different from the most developed economies and limit the adaptation possibilities with respect to the new technological advances. The applicants for support from measure 8.1 of the Operational Programme are not trying to be, at all costs, the pioneers of technological innovation. The subsidized projects are well thought-out, mainly business-wise. The evaluation principles assume that the innovations that will receive points necessary to obtain the support have to generate a specified competitive advantage, which means that they have to find their recipients on the target markets of the specific e-service. Therefore, we will find among the ideas mainly product
innovations, which virtualize and automate certain business processes or everyday activities specific for given social groups, aimed to make our lives easier. These are both ideas made in Poland and novel e-services existing on Western markets, mainly in the USA, adapted to the Polish reality. PARP supports the development of the ICT sector not only by subsidizing projects, but also by carrying out an educational activity. One of such spectacular campaigns was the “E-business Academy” What are its effects and can we expect some activities of this kind next year? For a few years now, we have been running a project “We Support e-Business”. As a part of it, the web.gov.pl service was created. At present, there are 12,000 registered users who form the largest community in Polish e-administration. The service has had more than 5 million visits so far; it features more than 1400 articles and the same number of posts promoting the e-services. The service hosts the largest database of e-business events in Poland. It is also a huge knowledge base: more than 60 e-books and e-guides on e-business have been downloaded so far more than 100,000 times. As part of this project we launched the “E-business Academy”. The activities conducted under the auspices of the Academy are large-scale and gather a large number of participants. In the last three months alone, we organized a series of regional conferences entitled “E-business Academy”. They were attended by more than 700 persons present in conference halls throughout Poland. The same number of attendees were gathered at the eBusiness Forum in Warsaw, which was a summary of the “Academy”. The web transmission was watched by 10,000 web users. The “E-business Academy” also generated a huge knowledge base. During just 2 weeks, the records from the conference were played more than 15,000 times. As part of the entire series of conferences, we were happy to host 75 experts, who in total gave almost 100 hours of lecture. The audio and video materials from all the meetings are available on PARP channels on Youtube.com/webgovpl. These numbers convince us there is a need for this type of meetings. We will be continuing these activities also in the next year.
The providers of e-services that made a commercial success on the Polish market should try to sell their products abroad. What support, apart from, for example financial assistance in the patent procedure, can PARP offer them? The e-Business Forum mentioned earlier was held under the motto of foreign expansion of e-services and B2B technologies. We gathered experts and practitioner from Poland and abroad, and we talked about all the aspects of such expansions in six thematic groups. During the e-Business Forum we granted awards for the most innovative e-services and B2B technologies. The winners of the competition will be able to participate in the CeBIT expo as part of the stand organized by PARP. We also promote the best e-services in best practice catalogues. We support the beneficiaries with knowledge. Every year, we publish reports that present the level of development of the e-service sector in Poland and globally. We also make available many other specialist e-books. Can the CeBIT expo this year, where we will be a strategic partner, be an opportunity for the Polish ICT sector to make a global appearance? Will PARP be involved in this event in some special way? CEBIT expo is one of the largest meetings of people from the ICT sector and digital economy in the world. Since 1986, it has enabled establishing new business contacts, given an impulse for the sector to grow and mad market success easier. Year after year, the expo attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. Last year, it was attended by more than 311,000 people (exhibitors and visitors) from more than 50 countries. This year’s expo is special - Poland is the Strategic Partner of CeBIT Expo 2013. The partnership of Poland in organization of the CeBIT expo is one of the elements of the 3-year programme of promoting the Polish ICT sector under the slogan “Do IT in Poland”, as part of the campaign “Polska Power”. This is a huge opportunity for Poland to promote the successes and opportunities of the ICT sector. We will be present there and we will have an opportunity to present our achievements and get inspired by knowledge and experience of others. :: special edition 2013 polish market :: 7

“Shareconomy” as the leading theme of CeBIT expo in 2013 CeBIT expo - the largest meeting of representatives of the ICT sector and digital economy in the world. For several years, it has been facilitating new business contacts and in consequence, giving an impulse to the growth of the sector and making it easier to succeed on the market. The expo is very popular and each year it attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.
The expo responds to the market challenges and today the new challenge is the Shareconomy, which is global sharing of knowledge, joint use of intellectual resources and exchange of experiences using modern technologies. After Cloud Computing in 2011 and Managing Trust in 2012, time has come for Shareconomy. It is a new form of cooperation based on trust which consists in sharing knowledge, contacts and resources. The private sector has found out a long time ago that cooperation - especially in times of economic crisis - is better than competition, as the joint use of achievements and ideas brings many profits. Nevertheless, the success of the idea of sharing depends on the willingness to cooperate, resourcefulness and openness in carrying out ideas. Shareconomy was selected the leading theme of CEBIT 2013 expo because of opinions of management boards of the global leaders in the ICT sector and corporations which are the main recipients of this type of solutions. Market trend analyses were taken into consideration, too. Suggestions from CeBIT fans in social media were also important. “More and more users use cloudbased solutions, more and more people trust in ICT innovations. So, the most important fair of the digital world takes up the new challenge: it consists in the popularization of knowledge sharing, joint use of intellectual resources and exchange of experiences as the new form of cooperation,” says Frank
8 :: polish market :: special edition 2013
Pörschmann of the CeBIT expo management as part of Deutsche Messe AG. “The technological base of Shareconomy is built by new telecommunications and IT solutions. They enable the implementation of the knowledge sharing phenomenon, which is in its various aspects the foundation of a stable growth of companies and responsible management.” The term Shareconomy describes an important social trend: change of attitude from the will to have to the need to share. Frank Pörschmann perceives various aspects of this trend: “Firstly, Shareconomy has a decisive influence on the course of various processes in the company - for instance on the increasingly popular use of social media by companies. Secondly, the world wide web becomes the main place of work and execution of tasks by project groups - both within the organization and outside. Business partners, advisors, suppliers and customers are involved in particular elements of the business operations, becoming an element of a wider process. The boundaries between particular elements of the organization and between the company and its environment become blurred. That is why both the managers and the employees must change their mindset and way of operating and must learn to share knowledge, contacts and resources.” Successful market leaders have already implemented modern tools that allow for sharing knowledge quickly and efficiently. “Blogs, wikis, group
work systems, survey programmes and other applications of this type will significantly change our working environment in the coming years. The entire system of communication, the decision-making method, the role of management in the life of the company and even expectations of candidates towards potential employers will change,” Frank Pörschmann adds. “To say in short: the global economy will become a network of connections. Those who want to be successful need to find their feet in this new model similar to the Facebook structure.” This philosophy is visible namely in the fact that more and more sectors get into a close cooperation - companies from various sectors cooperate on finding new solutions and developinnovations. A further growth of suppliers of applications and ICT services is increasingly dependent on the growth of sectors that are the main recipients of ICT solutions: the motor and power industry as well as the health care sector. Changes can also be seen in the way consumer goods are used. The trend to possess is driven out by the trend to use, more and more people decide to rent instead of buying. “Carsharing – a system of co-owning cars - is one of the most important new mobility models. Websites where you do not buy a given music composition and instead of downloading it to your computer, you only get a time-limited right to play it become increasingly popular, too,” explains Frank Pörschmann. Also software starts to be used today according to a completely different model - customized, adapted to specific needs, to specific purposes. This significant change in the business model is also a challenge for politicians. “It is necessary to start an international debate on rights related to use of products without purchasing them as property. At present, these issues are not fully regulated, which becomes a restraint in the development of the new model of global economy.” Frank Pörschmann stresses. ::
A CUTTING-EDGE COMPANY Hydromega was founded in 1988. From the beginning of its activity it has been dealing with designing and manufacturing hydraulic actuator systems and industrial automation. Parallel with the production of hydraulic power supplies and devices with hydraulic drive sys tems, Hydromega carries out research, development and implementation works. Permanent cooperation with industrial plants and solving, often difficult, technical issues gave the company practical knowledge which is used in its projects. The company has 17 utility models and patents, as well as over 8,000 solutions in the field on hydraulic actuator systems. Owing to its many years of reputation and the fact that its brand is wellknown, Hydromega was able to establish permanent cooperation with technical universities, including the Military University of Technology, the Gdańsk University of Technology and the Military Institute for Tank and Automotive Technology.

Polish Market E-business Category I place – Konrad Description of the project: Ktotomowi.pl is the first service in the world offering rehabilitation exercises specially dedicated to the children with impaired hearing, in particular with cochlear implants. The Institute of the Pathology and Physiology of Hearing in Kajetany is one of the leading centres in the world in which cochlear implant surgeries are performed – in Polandthere are thousands of children who have regained their hearing owing to the said treatment. Such an operation, even though complex, is only the beginning of a difficult path that a hearing-impaired child must walk in order to have
a normal life. A child with an implant must learn to hear – he or she receives sounds totally differently than a healthy child, so he or she must get used to new stimuli and to interpret them appropriately. So far the children have had materials only for speech therapy at their disposal – charts with drawings, puzzles, building blocks, etc. As regards the e-service, not only does it offer attractive, specially prepared games and animations, but it also provides thousands of natural sounds and the so-called onomatopoeias. It is an ideal supplement to a strenuous rehabilitation process. It is the first e-service in the world specially addressed to a target group.

Stopango Description of the project: The Stopango platform allows planning routes for public transport, obtaining information about the scheduled departure times and checking the timetables. In the mobile devices a functionality for foot navigation is currently being developed. The current market for the service is the USA, Canada and Australia. For the cooperating companies an API is available and on its basis the said companies may create various products, such as interactive kiosks with departure times, timetables to be displayed on the bus stops or tram stops or widgets directing users to their websites.
Nearly 80 regions are covered by the service. At the moment an iPhone application is very popular. A great asset and an advantage of the platform over the competitors is the functionality for providing the carriers with tools for a simple integration with the system: an import tool from the Busman planning system, belonging to the AGC company, which system is very popular in Poland, or a tool for importing the timetables published in compliance with the international GTFS standard. The platform uses the geo-localization of the user, the online connection and the technologically advanced algorithms.

Its effectiveness is owed to the fact that during the learning process several senses are used at the same time (eyesight, hearing, touch [copying]) and also intelligent repetitions are scheduled, which have been programmed on the basis of the research into the human memory. From the perspective of the user, the learning process is exactly as it should be: fast, pleasant and effective. In the service there are between ten and twenty professional language courses prepared in cooperation with the University of Warsaw. Besides, the users have a possibility
of using flashcards (in Polish: “fiszki”) of other students and creating their own flashcards (it is possible to create a few thousand flashcards in more than 20 languages), to which Fiszkoteka automatically adds speakers’ recordings and pictures. With one click the users may change their lists of flashcards into MP3 files, which may be listened to at any time (e.g. while taking a walk, traveling or before falling asleep). Several learning modes are available (including games and tests). Also, a foreign version (memoteque.com) is available and the final tests of the mobile versions (Android/iOS) are currently under way.

Poland
– partner country of CeBIT expo 2013 On March 4th, Chancellor Angela Merkel and Prime Minister Donald Tusk will open the International ICT expo CeBIT 2013 (5-9 March 2013), as this year, Poland is the partner of the trade show. The ceremony will be attended by 2,200 persons, including representatives of governments (including the Minister of Economy, Janusz Piechociński), public institutions, presidents of the largest IT companies and German and foreign journalists. The memorandum of understanding on strategic partnership for CeBIT 2013 expo was signed in Berlin on June 26, 2012 by Frank Pörschmann, member of the board of Deutsche Messe AG responsible for CeBIT expo, and Dariusz Bogdan, undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Economy. Jerzy Bojanowicz
CeBIT expo (Centrum der Büro- und Informationstechnik) was organized for the first time in 1970, as the ”computer part” of the famous Hanover Fair. Since 1986, it has been an independent event organized in early March, a few weeks before the Hanover Fair. One has to add that in 1996 CeBIT HOME show was organized. It was supposed to take place every 2 years, but in 2000, due to the organization of the World EXPO in Hanover, it was relocated to Leipzig and ultimately, it was cancelled. For many years, the show has been attracting thousands of visitors from all over the world. No wonder, as it is the largest IT (software and hardware) and new technologies (including mobile telephony and brown goods) trade show. In 2012, products and services of 4200 exhibitors from 70 countries, shown in 26 halls and pavilions of total area

of 466.1 thousand sq.m., were seen by about 312 thousand visitors. But CeBIT is not only Hanover, as only this year, other CeBIT shows will be organized: CeBIT Bilisim Eurasia (Istanbul, Turkey), CeBIT Australia (Sydney) and BITS (Porto Allegre, Brazil). “I am happy that Germany, our main trade partner, has noticed the potential of the Polish ICT sector and gave us the title of partner country for organization of the largest ICT trade show in the world - CeBIT 2013. We will take this opportunity to develop mutual cooperation in the scope of innovative technologies. I am convinced that in the coming years, the ICT sector will drive the economic growth of entire Europe, that is why it is worth investing in it today. The global meeting of the ICT sector in Hanover is a great opportunity for our companies to become known on the German market. We do not consider CeBIT expo as a onetime event, but rather as an opportunity to develop innovative companies and to increase Polish and German trade
in the area of modern technologies.” said Dariusz Bogdan, Vice-Minister of Economy, at the agreement signing ceremony, emphasizing that Poland’s partnership on CeBIT 2013 is a result of several years of efforts of the Polish government. In 1993, the Central and Eastern European countries were a partner region of CeBIT, appearing under the slogan “Business with Eastern Europe”. “In the last twenty years, Poland went through an incredible growth, and survived the economic crisis from the years 2008/2009 almost without losses. We want to offer our neighbour the opportunity to be presented to the world as the country of modern technologies.” stressed Frank Pöschmann, member of the board of Deutsche Messe AG. “We are happy that, as a partner country, we can present a country that is an attractive place to locate projects and has a great growth potential for the ICT sector owing to its well educated specialists.”

The cooperation agreement betweenDeutsche Messe AG and the Ministry of Economy was signed on 26 October 2012 by Jörg Bode, Minister of Economy of Lower Saxony, who said that CeBIT is an indicator of the economic growth of Germany in a given year. “If the show is successful, one can assume that the economy will be successful too. I believe that Poland and Lower Saxony have a chance to drive the global economy.” During the meeting, a sectoral memorandum was signed concerning cooperation between the German Federal Association for Information Technology, Telecommunications and New Media (BITKOM) and the Polish Chamber of Commerce of Electronics and Telecommunications (KIGEiT), Polish Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunications (PIIT) and Polish Chamber of Commerce of High Technology (IZTECH). “For many years, Poland has been one of the key trade partners with a fast growing and innovative economy. Our neighbour is an attractive, promising market for ICT sector companies. German companies will get many benefits from closer cooperation” stressed professor Dieter Kempf, President of BITKOM. “Our eastern neighbour is an attractive and constantly growing market for high tech companies. Mutual trade contracts will therefore result in tangible benefits to all the interested parties.” Making contacts with potential contractors during the show and finding solutions adapted to specific needs are facilitated by profiled areas addressed to clearly defined groups of recipients. These are four thematic platforms grouping offers for different target groups: PRO (efficient and safe solutions for commercial companies), LAB (presentations by universities, science institutions and creative start-ups and units conducting technological projects of work results and achievements), LIFE (utility products for the mass recipient, including computer games, which is an area dynamically growing in Poland) and GOV (products which may help improve the work of the public sector and health care). Remarks by deputy Economy Minister Dariusz Bogdan for the special edition of “Polish Market” devoted to the CeBIT 2013 fair Poland is a strategic partner of the CeBIT international fair for the ICT industry in Hanover. Why is it so important for us? CeBIT is one of the world’s biggest meetings for those operating in the ICT and digital economy sector. Awarding Poland the status of partner country at this year’s fair is a special distinction for us and a sign of recognition of not only the potential of the Polish ICT sector but also the strength and stability of our economy. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of being the CeBIT partner for the international promotion of the Polish IT industry as a thriving sector of the economy with a potential for further expansion.
What do you expect of the CeBIT fair in terms of benefits for Poland as a strategic partner? The Hanover fair is the culmination of Poland’s strategic partnership, which lasts a whole year. We are presenting the assets of the Polish IT sector at seminars and press conferences held all over the world. We want the sector to be seen as Poland’s speciality and an industry competitive on a European scale. Let me say that the ICT/IT sector generates almost 4% of Poland’s GDP. In my view, an excellent summary of the fair would be showing Poland as a country whose achievements in the ICT sector are translated into economic growth and attract investment. We also very much want to present Poland’s human capital, which is our big potential. Polish people are excellently educated, have vast knowledge and practical skills, are bright and creative.
We often say that the CeBIT fair creates enormous promotional opportunities for our businesses. What specifically are these opportunities? The fair is an excellent opportunity to establish new contacts and find partners. This in turn is directly translated into enhancing the competitive edge of our businesses and narrowing the gap between Poland and Western European countries. The huge number of diverse thematic exhibitions at CeBIT provides an opportunity to compare one’s ideas to what is offered by others. This provides a boost to further activity and development. What is more, presence in Hanover is an opportunity for international promotion, especially for businesses which have so far operated only on the Polish market. ::
citizens due to implementation of advanced technologies to the public sector and TeleHealth - presentation of changes made by digital innovations in outpatient clinics, hospitals, clinics and pharmacies, improving the comfort of doctors and patients. The current knowledge of the most important trends in all the key areas of the new technology sector will be presented during the sectoral convention “CeBIT Global Conferences” (5-8 March): three parallel sessions with lectures, discussions and expert panel discussions with the participation of specialists from all over the world. The subject matter of the convention will include intersectoral global trends, breakthrough premieres and impact of technological changes on the labour market and social behaviour. The main thematic areas are: Social – social media, Mobile – mobile technologies, Cloud – cloud computing, Smart – smart solutions and Digital Lifestyle.
However, the main subject of this year’s fair, after Cloud Computing (2011) and Managing Trust (2012), is “Shareconomy” - sharing knowledge, resources and experience in the world of business. “The sharing trend turned out to be clearly the most visible trend on the market. More and more users use cloudbased solutions, more and more people trust in ICT innovations. The most important show of the digital world takes up the new challenge: it consists in popularizing knowledge sharing, joint use of intellectual resources and exchange of experiences as the new form of cooperation - both in the economic and social context” explains Frank Pörschmann. ““Shareconomy”, which leads to greater transparency, encourages to participate and creates many new business models, is the catchword of the year and the subject of the most heated discussions. The technological base is built by new telecommunications and IT solutions which special edition 2013 polish market :: 17

The following institutions will have their stands: Polish Agency for Enterprise Development, Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency, Social Insurance Institution, IT Projects Centre, Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography, Institute of Communications, Office of Electronic Communications, Małopolska Agencja Rozwoju Regionalnego SA, Wrocław Technological Park, ICT Pomorze Zachodnie Cluster, Warsaw University of Technology, National Center of Research and Development, Air Force Institute of Technology, Material Reserves Agency, Science and Technology Park in Ełk, Polish Chamber of Information Technology and Telecommunications, Polish Chamber of Commerce of Electronics and Telecommunications, Polish Chamber of Commerce for High Technology. Polish communes and regions, including Kalisz, Baranów Sandomierski and Świecie, as well as the Marshall Office of Wielkopolskie Province will also be represented at the show. Of course, the area they take up varies. For instance, the Ministry of Economy will be presented on 1,314 sq. m., including 820 sq. m. on the national stand, the Ministry of Administration and Digitization - 549 sq. m., the Ministry of Science and Higher Education - 100 sq. m., Marshall Office of Wielkopolskie Province - 100 sq. m., Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency - 130 sq. m. (13 companies as part of the Eastern Poland Programme); National Centre of Research and Development - 150 sq. m., while the technology parks Pomorski
Park Naukowo-Technologiczny and Wrocławski Park Technologiczny SA (4 companies) – 10 sq. m. each. Hanover will also host 20 beneficiaries of measures 8.1 and 8.2 of the Innovative Economy Programme - winners of the competition for the most innovative e-services and B2B technologies organized by PARP. They will take part in the Match&Meet brokerage event and in interviews at the TV studio on the PARP stand. In addition, the 15th edition of the Future Match Brokerage Event will take place during the show. The event is organized by Enterprise Europe Network (28 centres, including 12 from Poland) and Leibniz Universität Hannover. The event is an opportunity to receive new orders, discover new and innovative technologies, promote the company on foreign markets and exchange experiences with ICT experts. This year’s event will be attended by 123 participants, including 37 from Poland. Polish entrepreneurs will occupy in total 1,817 sq. m.: 1,248 sq. m. in four PRO halls and 569 sq. m. in the LAB hall. Based on these locations, can one say we have nothing to show in the scope of products for the mass recipient and products that facilitate the work of the public sector and the health care sector? The Ministry of Economy ordered a part of the tasks related to the Polish presence at CeBIT 2013 to the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP), which is responsible for development of the exhibition space, activities to promote Poland as a valuable partner in ICT during the show and after its completion, as well as maintenance of the public administration stands, organization of the Polish Evening and opening ceremony of the Polish national stand. “The partnership of Poland in organization of the CeBIT expo is one of the elements of the 3-year programme of promoting the Polish ICT sector under the slogan “Do IT in Poland”, as part of the campaign “Polska Power”. This is a huge opportunity for Poland to promote the successes and opportunities of the ICT sector. We will be present there and we will have an opportunity to present our achievements and get inspired by knowledge and experience of others,” says Bożena LublińskaKasprzak, President of PARP.
PARP stand will feature a TV studio, which will broadcast 5 hours of programme daily: interviews with ebusiness representatives, documentaries from technology companies’ stands and a daily report summing up all the important events of the day. The CeBIT expo was entered by the Ministry of Economy on the list of the sectoral programme for promotion of ICT/IT services. The businesses joining the programme may receive a refund of 75% of the costs of participation in the Trade show. Moreover, the Ministry of Economy prepared a programme of visits at the show for Polish students. The buses will run along the routes Warsaw-Łódź-Poznań-Hanover and Cracow-Katowice-Wrocław-Hanover. Owing to the status of strategic partner, Polish companies will be also able to participate in all the most important events related to ICT organized during the year in Germany, including in more than 10 ICT seminars. The bilateral networking initiative will be supplemented by many special events and expert forums with participation of specialists from Poland and Germany. “Selecting Poland to be the partner country is also an opportunity to talk with governments of both states about the strategy for the ICT sector and economic policy” says professor Kempf, president of BITKOM. The German and Polish ICT Summit will be such an opportunity - it will take place at the Hannover Congress Centrum, right after the show opening ceremony. Of course, one has to remember that today, we live in a world of “first in, first served”. That is why the companies do not save their new products “for the fairs”. Naturally, they show some prototypes of products or services, but since “time is money”, for sure in a few months the market will see solutions not presented on the CeBIT expo! ::

In addition to contractual business events, Poznań International Fair runs also projects dedicated to a wide audience, including competitions and equestrian equipment Cavaliada - a horse-riding equipment fair, Motor Show - Poland’s largest car exhibition and Poznań Game Arena (PGA) - a multimedia and entertainment fair. The last one attracted in 2012 over 35 000 visitors and was given a strong media coverage, with 320 accredited journalists. The exhibitors included: 4max, AMD, ASUS, CDP.pl, Creative, Cenega, Eizo, Entrymedia, FSP Fortron, Kingstone, Level 77, LG, Gamedot, Hama, Mad Catz, Microsoft, MSI, Natec, NTT, OCLab, Poznań University of Technology, Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center, Steel Series, Techland, Turtle Entertainment, and X Note. The fair programme
was also very rich in content, its most awaited point being the presentation of a report on the Polish games market, combined with a debate on copyrights and ACTA. Participants of the Poznań Game Arena enjoyed premiere shows of games and equipment, as well as a number of competitions. The strong point of the programme was undoubtedly the tournaments, including League of Legends’ Cybresport finals, and an extremely popular game FIFA 2013. The Retro Games zone was very successful too, as it offered an opportunity to see games and computers from before 40 years. The ASUS booth attracted visitors by the latest models of laptops, netbooks and ultrabooks. Fans of extreme accomplishments were tempted by overlocking demonstrations performed by the leading specialists from OCLab.pl. Visitors came out in force to see a family-dedicated pavilion. They could play there children’s computer games by Techland, or test their skills in Xbox 360 console. Another fair’s novelty was the Congress Game Creators - an event dedicated both to amateurs and professionals. During several dozens lectures, participants were able to exchange opinions with the speakers, including the world-famous celebrities: Eoin O’Doherty from Rovio Entertainment Ltd and Oliver Jones from Zynga Game Network. The next PGA will be held on October 18-20, 2013. The fair’s offer will be extended to new elements. Among them, special consideration should be given to the island of Polish game developers, where in addition to renowned producers, some independent creators will also be invited to advertise themselves. ::

Innovation finds its home A trigeneration system, a laboratory for non-destructive testing, technological-office complex - to a layperson these notions mean nothing, however, they mean everything to new technologies specialists. The construction of the complex - an innovative project called “From Wroclaw Technology Park to Innopolis Wroclaw” — is nearing an end. It is high time to decipher these mysterious expressions. Wroclaw Technology Park (WTP) is one of the most thriving institutions, creating conditions for implementation of the most advanced technologies in business. Innopolis Wroclaw is a completely new, multidimensional project and is significantly expanding WTP’s possibilities. It is predicted that about 200 companies will take advantage of the research and development services! A new quality, a cluster of new technologies, a complex introducing new technologies to business is being created in Wroclaw. Innopolis Wroclaw comprises four new buildings, each one of them performing a different function. In one of them, the so-called trigeneration system has been built. In a nutshell, it is a small heat and power station which produces electricity, hot water, heating. And, additionally in the summer it will work as an air conditioning station. The energy produced will be used to service the whole complex of Wroclaw Technology Park. Any potential surplus will be sold to open networks. So where is the innovation in the technology? What is new, is the fact that it will be possible to build such “heat and power stations” anywhere (which will provide savings in network
constructions), but most of all, this project assumes energy recovery in all these points, which in traditional points is being wasted. Such a solution constitutes a perfect perspective to power housing estates, oflice buildings and public purpose buildings. Therefore, Innopolis is a self-sufficient power plant and also a large modern server room which aims to render services to external clients. The construction of the server room is a natural consequence of effective use of energy produced in place. Innopolis Wroclaw is also a Non-destructive Testing Laboratory. The idea of such tests is that a sample taken for testing remains untouched as a result of applying electron and x-ray radiation. However the laboratory’s main advantage is its power. Thanks to technologies applied in the project it will be possible to x-ray, for example, steel of half a meter thickness! Then, on the basis of pictures taken in this process it will be possible to detect numerous faults in materials - air bubbles or corrosion; evaluate the quality of joints and such details. This solution can also be used to sterilise equipment, irradiate food or modify material properties, e.g. polymers. The Innopolis Wroclaw complex came into being thanks to European Union resources - from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Operational Programme Innovative Economy, measure 5.3. The construction cost PLN 134 million, out of which 60% of the money was spent on the construction work and 40% on purchasing the laboratory process equipment. ::

Computer- Soft. From the very beginning, we‘ve had the words of Lord Kelvin in mind: “To measure is to know - if you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.” Thus, our inspirations were high. Today, after twenty years, I can say that we have managed to rise up to the challenge. This can be confirmed by the numerous awards and distinctions we have gained - and – what makes us most content – the trust and satisfaction of our Clients,” says Eugeniusz Orłowski, President of the Board of O&S Computer-Soft Sp. z o.o. The company specialises in creating systems and programs for ICT networks. Since 2011, within the Innovative Economy Operational Programme 2007-2013, work is being carried out on the newest project entitled Pegasus. This is a device which will considerably rationalise and improve the quality of operation of ICT networks in terms of broadband access to the Internet. The project is an innovative solution, not only in Poland, but also in Europe. It was created due to cooperation with a group of scientists from the Silesian and Wrocław Universities of Technology, as well as numerous research and scientific centres from all over Poland, including Orange Labs. Apart from this, the company is developing its activity in other areas of the ICT industry. Its portfolio includes a number of applications created to support corporate management. O&S Computer-Soft is not only a reliable and trustworthy business partner; it is also a group of people aware of the challenges faced by 21st-century business. Putting the principle of corporate social responsibility into practice, O&S Computer-Soft supports local cultural, social and sports initiatives. “People are our priority. It’s them whom we create for and whom we give opportunities to. We know that today’s business is not only about making money. We are also aware that investment in human capital is the best investment we can make, so we organise training and internship programmes for young, ambitious people who wish to develop their skills. We also support local sports teams and we actively participate in the cultural life of the communities in which we live. This is how sensible business should be like in our times,” recapitulates President Orłowski. ::
