Reflecting challenges of today, inspiring growth of tomorrow
The Tirana Architecture Weeks 2014 (TAW) is organized for the purpose of : promoting the exchange of knowledge between professionals at a national and international level in order to increase the public’s interest in architecture and art design as disciplines which are closely connected to the contemporary development of cities; and to raise the interaction level between the professionals and the general public with the city as well as increase participation in decision-making and development processes.
Tirana Architecture Week 2014 (TAW) Objectives: 1. To strengthen the role of Architecture, Art, Design, and Culture as key elements in the development and integration processes of the Albanian cities and those of the region. 2. To promote the Albanian architectural culture and Art Design practices in the network of regional and international partners. 3. To exchange national/international experiences in the fields of Architecture, Urban planning, Art design, and conceptual theories of contemporary cities, focusing on dynamic contexts (the case of the Balkan context). 4. To cultivate the culture of citizen participation in citymaking processes by increasing the interaction level between citizens and the city through urban activation, public art, and the more complex and long-term interventions in the city. The types of activities based on each specific discipline, for instance, artistic production, education, audience growth and

TIRANA ARCHITECTURE WEEK development, capacity building, cultural activities, research and development, etc. and a more detailed description of the activities planned in each area Tirana Architecture Weeks 2014 is conceptualized to include 4 main activity groups: Architecture events, Art Design events, Workshops, and Public Events. Each of these consists of different kinds of activities like: conferences, exhibitions, competitions, workshops, open forums, etc. Through its activities Tirana Architecture Weeks aims at achieving: (primary group) the community of architects, urban planners, and related professions, national/international artists in Art design; academics in the fields/ disciplines covered in the scheduled conferences; community; students.
The impact and contribution on the fields of architecture and design in the Albanian cities’ development processes transpire through the activities of Tirana Architecture Weeks 2014, build on the previous experiences and impact of TAW 2012, Design Weeks in Tirane 2013, on the POLIS University’s experience portofolio, and are further amplified by the contribution of its partner organizations. This event is organized twice annualy. TAW – Tirana Architecture Weeks and all the activities which comprise this event are original creations and are developed in full compliance with copyright laws. The invitees include authors of scientific and artistic research work, etc., along with the entire body of lecturers, curators, moderators, and leaders of workshops which will be organized according to the relevant themes.

Saimir Kristo/TAW 2014 Curator Saimir Kristo [1987] is an architect and an urban designer and currently lecturer and curricula manager of POLIS University in Tirana, Albania. In his professional experience he also collaborated in urban participatory processes, as a coordinator in urban planning projects for various cities in Albania. His scientific research is based on the paradigm of information technology in architecture and at the same time he is editor at Forum A+P, Scientific Journal for Architecture and Urban Planning and member of the editorial board of MAD Magazine. Currently he is curator of TAW – Tirana Architecture Week – [En]Visioning Future Cities.

Gjergji Dushniku is an architect and an urban designer. In 2012, he graduated from Polis University in Tirana, Albania, with a second Master in Applied Design in the field of parametric design. He Reflecting challenges of is a member of the Albanian Union of today, inspiring growth Architects (AUA) and the chairman of of tomorrow the Polis Alumni Association. He has participated in many international conferences and workshops like the Tirana Architecture Week in Tirana, the Polis University - Projecting through participating in Balkan Cities , in Bauhaus, Dessau, the Mikser Festival, in Belgrade, Serbia, the Keisserschnitte at the TU Wien in Austria, the Tirana River at the TU Karlsruhe in Germany, the Sicily Lab in Sicili, Itali and so on. He was also nominated for the Archiprix 2013 in Moscow. Currently he works at the Polis University as an Assistant Professor at the Sustainability Laboratory and Innovation Department. He is interested in interactive architecture, paramentric design and flexible context. Currently he is curator of TAW – Tirana Architecture Week – [En]Visioning Future Cities.

Dear reader interested on Tirana Welcome to the city of energy surprise and initiative… Welcome to Tirana… Welcome to Tirana Architecture Week! We live in a city that is passing at present day an essential moment of its own history. A moment of hope, growth, action, but also a moment of reflection and envisioning the future… Meantime we need to jump to catch up the lost time of the past.., but we need as well a constructive confrontation of thinking, ideas, and projects to built a healthy and sustainable future! We need to learn from success as well as reflect on certain present and future concerns… That is why together with the excellent international team of the POLIS University and Co-PLAN Institute for Habitat Development we generated such provocation toward the city, the professionals and partner institutions inviting them to speak up and respond such
dilemmas posed by the intellectual temptation called TAW Tirana Architecture Week! It is going to be two intensive months of full public events and performances, open debates and forums, conferences and workshops, exhibitions and international competitions, etc… The city will be in the hands of citizens and professionals, so this sound exiting and inspiring to me and my staff at the Municipality of Tirana. Tirana Architecture Weeks (TAW) is an excellent initiative of the dynamic international team of POLIS University and Co-PLAN, Institute for Habitat Development. Considering all the professionals and partner institutions who are invited to speak and respond in such dilemmas posed by the intellectual provocation of TAW, it is going to be one intensive month full of public events and performances, open debates and

Tirana Architecture Week and the Albanian Ministry of Culture invite architects and architecture students up to 40 years old in an open ideas competition for the Pyramid Square of Tirana. Positioned in an emblematic location, formally a symbol of Communist Heritage in Albania this space in the present day has no future and identity, placed where most of the significant historical periods of the city overlap the organic origin from the autoritarian regime through 20 years of transition. A solution for a harmonious coexistence is yet to be found. This document describes the objectives, the terms and conditions of the competition, and describes the characteristics of the site. All submitted projects shall be reviewed by an international jury, composed by representatives of the Ministry of Culture and experienced professionals.The jury shall select five finalist projects.

In the framework of Tirana Architecture Week – [En]Visioning Future Cities, Albanian Netherlands Alumni Association, POLIS University and Co-Plan financed by the Netherlands Embassy in Tirana, Albania are organizing a product design competition.The purpose of this Product Design Competition is to create a small, smart, and functional product designed and inspired by renowned Dutch Design. The winner will be chosen out in early October 2014. The winning design will be exhibited together with the 10 best finalist designs during Tirana Architecture Week – [En]Visioning Future Cities.

peter eisenman Eisenman is an internationally recognized architect and educator. The principal of Eisenman Architects, he has designed large-scale housing and urban design projects, innovative facilities for educational institutions, and a series of inventive private houses. He has taught at Cambridge University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Ohio State University, and The Cooper Union. From 1967 to 1982 he was the founder and director of the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in NYC.

jason payne UCLA/ HIRSUTA (USA) Jason Payne has worked as project designer for Reiser + Umemoto Architects and Daniel Libeskind Studio, and co-partners the award winning office Gnuform. With the launch of his new office, Hirsuta, Payne continues to promote a new materialism with a distinctly sensate bias. His work engages material dynamics in the production of form to create a direct appeal to the senses.

jesse reiser Jesse Reiser received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the Cooper Union in New York and completed his Masters of Architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He was a fellow of the American Academy in Rome in 1985 and he worked for the offices of John Hejduk and Aldo Rossi prior to forming Reiser + Umemoto with partner, Nanako Umemoto. Jesse is a Professor of Architecture at Princeton University and has previously taught and lectured at various educational and cultural institutions throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

hitoshi abe Hitoshi Abe studied at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and acquired, in 1989, the Master of Architecture. During his studies he worked from 1988 to 1992 in the office of Coop Himmelb(l)au. In 1992 he founded the Atelier Hitoshi Abe. In 1993 he earned his doctorate at Tohoku University, in 1998 became associate professor at the Institute and in 2002 full professor. Since 2007 he has worked at the UCLA Department of Architecture and Urbanism of the School of Arts and Architecture in Los Angeles.

loris rossi METROPOLIS (AL) Graduated in architecture at “La Sapienza” University of Rome, Master degree in Architecture “Ludovico Quaroni”. He was awarded a PhD scholarship in Architectural Composition and Theory at “La Sapienza” and he developed part of his PhD dissertation research at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning of UCLA, in LA. From 2005 – 2011 he was co-founder of the ungroup Architecture office based in Rome, and since October 2011 he is a full time professor at POLIS University and technical director of Metropolis office l.t.d. His research is focused in urban design, in the specific on the relationship between informal settlements and new urban intermodality.

Emilio Tuñón is a Spanish architect. He graduated from the ETSAM School of Architecture in 1981 and was with the Fine Arts Cultural Department (1982) and the Architecture Public Works and Urban Planning Department (1983). In 1992, Tuñón and Luis Mansilla established the architecture firm Mansilla + Tuñón Architects. The office is focused on cultural projects and is devoted to a confrontation between theory and teaching, and design and construction practice.

ivana borovnjak INDEPENDENT DESIGNER (CR) Ivana received her Master's degree in conceptual design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, while Roberta received her Master's degree in performance design at the Central Saint Martins College in London. After returning to Croatia they started working together on self initiative projects in product design and visual communications. Independently they work on projects in the fields of culture, art, the theatre and nonprofit organizations from Amsterdam, London and Zagreb. In 2011 their first table project for1or2 has been selected by Konstantin Grcic and exhibited at Salone Satellite, Milan within the Young Balkan Designers collective.
