C H A M P I O N R E V E R S E W E AV E

Formed in 1919 as the Knickerbocker Knitting Co. by Abe and Bill Fainbloom, the company pioneered the manufacture of heav y duty cotton products, used primarily for warming up and down by athletes who had historically used lightweight day attire for any sporting activities. In the 40s the company changed its name to Champion Knitting Mills and became market leaders in sporting cotton apparel. In 1952 they patented their Reverse Weave heavy cotton knitting process, essentially knitting the cotton backwards they found the solution that avoids vertical shrinkage. This then gave the garments more durability wash after wash, cornering the US sporting market. Through this sporting association Champion was adopted by many of the US Hip Hop and Rap pioneers through the 80s and was influential in European club culture in the 90s and has remained a staple wardrobe, leading to collaborations with Stussy and most recently Supreme which have reinvigorated the brands premium market space.

McL AU REN

Founded in 1962, McLauren has long been a famous knitwear brand. However, in the 1990s all traces were lost of the fine handmade Shetland creations, until an Italian entrepreneur, mindful of the brand ’s heritage and tradition, decided to relaunch it. Having produced knitted garments for Lanvin, Missoni, D&G and more, they are creating a handmade product using only the best yarns with Italian craftsmanship. Today McLauren’s collections are 100% made in Italy and redesigned in a contemporary key which is translated into fine elegance, which combines retro style with innovation. Ever y McLauren garment resembles a tailor-made item, not a mass produced one. Some models are still woven by patient hands, the custodians of ancient skills. McLauren can be found in some of the best stores globally including United Arrows, Beams and Isean.

NEUBA

WOVEN BY HAND – BY MANTHRI BABU IN HYDER ABAD, INDIA 17° 30’18” N 78° 21’36” E NEUBA is a brand that travels. We travel to wherever in the world offers the best skills for what we need. In 2012, we needed to find a Master hand-weaver with the knowledge to develop our research. So we travelled to India. Hyderabad to be specific. 17° 30’18”N 78° 21’36”E to be precise.* We engineer our tex tiles in -house, while most Western brands will source mass produced fabric stock. Working directly with our handweavers means that we can combine traditional Eastern skills with contemporary Western textile design. Hand weaving brings back the humanisation that is lost with modern machinery. The imperfections and personalities that come with each batch are a signature of the NEUBA brand. Different people, weaving at different speeds create subtle nuances in the fabric, which changes throughout the day, everyday, on every single garment. *We stitch the coordinates of each garment ’s origin into every label because we are always transparent about who we work with.

40

QASIMI

The Qasimi brand has its roots firmly grounded in London; it is the energy of the city and the diversity of its people that inspires our aesthetic. The Qasimi DNA fuses the elements of architecture, military and uniform with the cultural and traditional dress of the UAE, something of which has developed within London culture. It is this amalgamation of tradition meets modernity that creates a unique approach to menswear, which is as much discerning , as it is relevant. Qasimi is a uniform for everyday, with a commitment to quality and craftsmanship, using Italian fabrics and European production, purposely understated but always challenging where detail is as important inside as it is outside.

TO D D S N Y D E R + C H A M P I O N

Designer Todd Snyder and iconic brand Champion collaborated to launch a men’s sportswear line for Fall 2013. The debut collection, entitled “City Gym”, is inspired by archival Champion pieces and vintage photos from the New York Athletic Club. Snyder scoured Champion’s vast archive of sales catalogs and vintage samples to find styles and fabrics that would seamlessly meld with Snyder ’s love of classic American tailoring. “Champion has always symbolised quality and American style,” Snyder says. “I love the idea of mixing tailoring with their 1950’s gym issued items.” The Todd Snyder brand is a perfect complement to the Champion brand and we share his excitement in creating this new product line inspired by Champion heritage, Todd ’s history of working with iconic brands and adding a modern aesthetic to archived Champion apparel means consumers can rediscover the authenticity and quality of Champion.
