El Campus Diagonal-Besòs forma una unidad urbana compacta, cuidadosamente diseñada, ubicada en el cruce de Diagonal y Ronda Litoral. El Salón de Residentes quiere desempeñar su papel particular como "centro social" en este Campus; Un lugar con grandes instalaciones comunitarias y un hogar agradable para una población diversa de estudiantes, profesores invitados e investigadores. Los contornos del sitio están claramente definidos a lo largo de la alineación de varios edificios a ambos lados de la emblemática cubierta central de madera. Este mazo simboliza lo que este campus quiere ser: una cosecha de intercambio de conocimientos e ideas, de educación e investigación. El Salón de Residentes ocupa un lugar particular en el número de edificios del Campus. Es el único edificio que estará permanentemente habitado. Por lo tanto, busca una expresión que subraye la convivencia con un atisbo de informalidad. La generosa área de entrada cubierta es una extensión de la cubierta de madera, que lleva al residente y al visitante con elegancia hacia las funciones internas del edificio. La apertura de la vista al jardín en el lado de la calle, intensifica este gesto de bienvenida. El edificio está concebido alrededor de un espacio abierto central. Este patio invita a una abrumadora luz del día cristalina. La yuxtaposición repetitiva de las unidades de residencia de estudiantes se extiende junto al patio, formando así un patio para una agradable convivencia entre sus residentes, protegida de la ruidosa Ronda Litoral. El patio alcanza el nivel -1, ofreciendo espacios extra cualitativos para uso comunitario. 104
The Campus Diagonal-Besòs forms a compact, carefully designed urban unity, located at the crossing of Diagonal and Ronda Litoral. The Hall of Residents wants to play its particular role as “social hubâ€? in this Campus; a place with large communal facilities and a pleasant home for a diverse population of students, guest professors and researchers. The contours of the site are sharply defined along the lining up of several buildings at both sides of the emblematic central wooden deck. This deck symbolizes what this campus wants to be: a harvest of interchange of knowledge and ideas, of education and research. The Hall of Residents takes a particular place in the number of buildings of the Campus. It is the only building that will be permanently inhabited. Therefore it looks for an expression that underlines the conviviality with a glimpse of informality. The generous covered entrance area is an extension of the wooden deck, leading the resident and visitor elegantly towards the inner functions of the building. The opening up of the view onto the garden at the street side, intensifies this welcoming gesture. The building is conceived around a central open space. This courtyard invites an overwhelming c r y s t a l - cl e a r d a y l i g h t . T h e r e p e t i t i v e juxtaposition of student residence-units spreads out alongside the patio, forming by doing so a patio for a charming conviviality between its residents, protected from the noisy Ronda Litoral. The patio reaches to the -1 level, offering extra qualitative spaces for communal use. The volumetric strategy of the building is largely defined by the geometrical constraints 105
La estrategia volumétrica del edificio se define en gran medida por las restricciones geométricas impuestas por las normas de construcción. Para garantizar una alineación fluida de los edificios a lo largo de la Ronda Litoral, el contorno del edificio está en voladizo desde el nivel +2 hacia arriba. Estos resultados en un volumen articulado provisto de un orgulloso zócalo de dos pisos a lo largo del camino. La reducción de la altura del volumen en el lado norte a lo largo de la cubierta de madera es una restricción muy productiva a nivel urbano, ya que ofrece una escala más baja en el corazón del campus, una altura de referencia que conecta los diferentes edificios en su volumen y un espacio adicional en terrazas con una piscina. La planta baja está provista de un restaurante situado junto a la cubierta. La zona de entrada cubierta del edificio da paso a una cómoda y agradable terraza en extensión del restaurante. Las residencias de estudiantes tienen por definición un carácter repetitivo. La estructura y el diseño de la fachada muestran claramente esta modularidad. Sin embargo, en un intento de resaltar el carácter residencial del edificio, la posición repetitiva de las ventanas se ve borrosa por los paneles de aluminio protectores solares móviles que ofrecen una fachada más lúdica. Paneles prefabricados combinados con paneles de aluminio bronce para los revestimientos fijos. De esta manera, el edificio expresará su característica residencial adecuada, pero juega con las texturas y colores de los edificios existentes. 106
imposed by the building regulations. In order to guarantee a fluid alignment of the buildings along the Ronda Litoral, the contour of the building is cantilevered from the level +2 upwards. These results in an articulated volume provided with a proud two-stories high plinth along the road. The height reduction of the volume on the northern side along the wooden deck is urban-wise a very productive restriction, offering a lo wer scale at the heart of the campus, a reference height connecting the different buildings in their volume and an extra terraced space with a pool. The ground floor level is provided of a restaurant situated alongside the deck. The covered entrance area of the building gives way to a comfortable and pleasant terrace in extension of the restaurant. Student residences have by definition a repetitive character. The structure and the faรงade design show clearly this modularity. In an attempt to punctuate the residential character of the building though, the repetitive position of the windows is blurred by the aluminium moveable sunscreen panels offering a more playful faรงade. Precast panels combined with bronze aluminum panels for the fixed claddings. In this way the building will express its proper residential characteristic but plays with the textures and colors of the existing buildings. The identity of the Campus as a coherent quiet, refined but powerful urban unity is respected. The hall of residents adds another sculptural volume, as one of the keys of this exiting chessboard. 107
