W języku angielskim możemy stopniować przymiotniki i przysłówki. Wyraz w podstawowej formie to stopień równy (ang. positive degree): This is a good book; This boy is running very fast. Stopnia najwyższego (ang. superlative degree) przymiotników i przysłówków używamy, by wskazać, która z rzeczy, zjawisk lub osób jest największa, najważniejsza itp.: Emma is the shortest in our class; Who ran the fastest in the race yesterday? Przymiotniki i przysłówki w stopniu najwyższym możemy również wykorzystywać w konstrukcji the (best) thing I have ever (done) : What is the longest book you have ever read? This is the best TED talk I have ever watched.
str. 125

Obecnie częściej stosowane są formy further i furthest, lecz mówiąc o odległości fizycznej lepiej używać farther i farthest. How much farther is the castle? If you look carefully, you will see a small hut on the farther shore.
