Sustainability and Self-restraint an Ancient Concept
ISSUE SUPPORTED BY
POLYMERS Communiqué l April - May 2021
CONTENTS April - May 2021 Issue 7.4 l
Under the Cover
It’s all about going back to our roots; a lot would change!
Sustainability and self-restraint were virtues then, crucial today.
Sustainability is the colour of the season...let’s all adapt to it...else
we will soon become monochrome.
In the journey from ‘ecosystem’ to ‘economy’, guess we left back the facet of ‘environment’; something that we all need to collectively revisit. A multi-directional approach is imperative - material sciences, technologies, mindset, discipline, guidelines, attitude and more. Thus, this specially curated issue on ‘Sustainability and Business’. So, it is all about businesses being sustainable, and sustainability being the business. And finally, it’s not about economies or geographies, it’s actually about building a unified front for a common cause!

Sustainability in business context encompasses environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. These have profound impact in shaping long term sustenance of an organisation. The traditional approach of maximising shareholders’ value may no longer be adequate. It needs to be supplemented as well as complimented by ESG targe ts. While judging performance of an organisation in environmental context was widely practiced in the past, social and governance issues have now become appa rent. It has brought in a mindset change in leadership in businesses. Performance on gender, ethnic equity and contributio n to the community has become a part of the evaluation matrix.

The global pandemic situation has led many
businesses, including packaging , to undergo various challenges and the disru ption has impacted to such an extent that many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are still struggling to come out from that crisis. Many SMEs are even changing their business models in order to adapt to this changing environment. A highly unpredictable business environment may not be feasible for business. Companies may need to reinvent themselves and show readiness to adapt to new technologies. In this scenario, business leade rs believe that sustainability is considere d to be the greatest ‘mantra’ for the company’s success. The companies will be more concerned to develop sustainability-driven strategies, market sustainable products and services to survive in this challenging perio d. However, the essential services in relation to healthcare, energy and natural resources, and emergency services will continue to be in demand, although the approaches towa rds business models for these industries would also be changed. It is expected that a number of trends like globalisation will be redefi ned with a stronger emergence of socia l capitalism, acceleration of digital trans formation, increase of on-demand work force; the workplace will be redefined, supply chain will be fragmented and then reconfigured, upskilling and reskilling woul d be the priority, change in work habit will lead to urban transformation and rapid innovation will keep businesses afloat. All these trends will lead to a new mindset whic h will drive to future success of business.

To progress and to make profits, in short, to grow, the mindset has to be positive. The plastics industry is sustainable as it gives ease and comfort of life to the comm on man as it is a common man’s product. It is synonymous with GDP growth and better quali ty of life. For the coming 50 years, I see that growth will continue, despite challenges faced as regards the environmental issues, which are solvable. A positive mindset only will help SMEs who make products preferred by socie ty at large.

be grown. It took over a century, by mid-seventies of nineteenth, for the concept
of sustainability to gain traction. Publication of seminal books and reports - ‘Limits
to Growth’ and ‘Our Common Future’ - helped bring the concept mainstream.
Today, we are faced with the prospect of early annihilation of human and many other species due to unsustainable use of material, energy and water. Wonder, where does plastics fit into this narrative! Well, let us explore.
POLYMERS Communiqué l April - May 2021
Let’s Begin from the Very Beginning Plastics, as natural polymers, are present in nature
for millennia. These are shellac, ivory, animal horns and casein, to name a few. However, their availability and utilities continue to be very limited.
Manmade plastics arrived in mid eighteenth century, initially in the form of cellulose nitrate,
named ‘celluloid’. This replaced ivory in billiard
balls, an early unintended step to save the tuskers! Credit for commercial success of celluloid goes
to John W. Hyatt, an American inventor without

NEW POSSIBILITIES
A Plastic is Invented to Clean Our Water Instead of Polluting It!
A
scientist from India, Ameya Krishna B.
along with his Dutch colleagues, Dr. S. Linnhoud and Dr. W. M. de Vos have
invented a novel plastic material that cleans water using ion-exchange technology. While plastic is
continuously in the news for polluting the oceans and endangering marine life; in this case, they have reversed the equation - to clean water, making it pure and drinkable!
They showed that the material is stable in extreme
conditions, including strong acids and bases
making it strong. Their scientific publication shows that the plastic works as a membrane for desalination, and has the potential to be used in
fuel cells for renewable energy generation and storage. Moreover, this membrane is recyclable
and has self-healing properties. It is versatile,
strong and transparent, with drinking water being just one of the many possibilities.
Clean and fresh water has always been the most important resource for all living beings, especially
humans to survive. But, shortage of clean water has been a cause of growing concern in the last
century due to the global crisis of climate change. Hence, to address this issue, scientists around the world have been working on sustainable solutions to benefit humanity. One important line of research in this direction is the development of
new technologies for creating potable water. This latest research has the potential to make plastics eco-friendly as well as water-friendly.
46
The Plastic Material Common plastics are made with neutral polymeric
materials that are usually thermoplastics. Such materials soften when heat is provided and can be moulded as necessary. This new invention is
a saloplastic material, which uses salt to soften
and be moulded, which offers a lot of advantages including the movement of salt ions through it.
The material is dense, which they clearly show
in their scientific publications in the reputed Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. Their
images show their material to be dense on the nanometer scale. This nanomaterial is free from pores and is hydrophilic making it suitable for desalination applications.
Ion-exchange Technology Water can be purified in many ways. Membranes are used in the filtration processes which are materials that selectively allow the passage of
specific components and block others. They
are like a sheet containing many pores. General technologies include porous membranes such as
ultrafiltration
and
microfiltration.
These
technologies use size differences to detect
bigger impurities in water and can filter them
off. Smaller ones pass through depending on To know more, please subscribe to Polymers Communiqué at

T
he start of the fiscal year 2020/21 was particularly challenging due to the
first Corona lockdown imposed in Austria almost at the same time and the
worldwide spread of the pandemic. Nevertheless, the development work and
investments of the past years paid off impressively. EREMA Group, which consists of EREMA Group GmbH and its subsidiaries EREMA, PURE LOOP, UMAC, 3S, KEYCYCLE
and PLASMAC, was able to continue its course of growth and once again reported a successful conclusion to the year. A total turnover of EUR 250 million represents an
increase in revenue of more than 20 per cent compared to the financial year 2019/20. “In a year that has presented each of us with extraordinary professional and private challenges, we are particularly proud that we have succeeded so well in creating a
safe working environment for our employees, in fulfilling our customers’ expectations and in launching worldwide the innovations that we presented at K 2019,” is how the year is summed up by Manfred Hackl, CEO of EREMA Group GmbH.
Technological Answers to Increased Quality Demands of Recycled Granules / Pellets Around 7,000 systems supplied by EREMA Group companies are currently in operation in more than 100 countries worldwide. The number of employees has risen to a total
of 660. In technological terms, growth in all segments is based on the high quality
of recycled pellets achieved using these recycling solutions. These systems make

WAY FORWARD
Sustainability Challenges
for the Global Plastics Industry
A commitment that we will work as one responsible industry sector across all economies, will help find
long range sustainable solutions that are practical and appreciated by the entire world, soon.
T
he plastics industry, the world over, has been facing the specter of
‘sustainability’ in the last 5 or 6 years since some leading champions of the environment and economists, mostly based in the west, have blamed it for

using up non-renewable resources of our planet and doing little to address the nuisance of litter and colossal waste. The plastics sector has been blamed for meeting ‘needs of today but not caring for the needs of tomorrow’ and, thereby, not playing a
responsible role in caring for ‘sustainable development’ which is so vital for humans and also for controlling the most feared climate change worries across the world.

Plastics - A True Warrior While the demands of reducing plastics use and recycling waste may have been put on the
back burner by leaders in 2020 due to COVID-19 (a respite), it will be renewed. It was only with

Milliken presents
Reduce carbon footprint with PP ® ® products using Millad® NX 8000 and Hyperform® HPN While working to advance sustainability in plastics, Milliken helps customers to lower greenhouse gas emissions and their overall carbon footprint, reduce dependence on single-use plastics to create more durable, eco-friendly packaging, enhance plastic recycling and reduce overall waste. Hyperform® HPN® products enable 5% to 8% energy savings when used as a nucleator for production of thinwall injection molded container lids or similar polypropylene products. UL Environment & Sustainability’s verification services assessed several grades of the Hyperform HPN additive, and all earned recognition for their energy-related sustainability performance.
Several of Milliken’s additive technologies help converters to manufacture more sustainably – by reducing energy use, enabling the substitution of more environmentally friendly materials, and promoting the recyclability of resins such as polypropylene or the use of a higher percentage of recycled PP in end products. Millad® NX® 8000 not only transforms polypropylene into a lightweight, crystal-clear alternative to glass, but also boosts its sustainability by enabling converters to process the material at a lower temperature, resulting in both faster cycle times and energy savings. Traditional clarifiers require high processing temperatures to optimize transparency. The improved solubility of Millad NX 8000 provides improved aesthetics at significantly lower processing temperatures, thus lower energy consumption, shorter cycle time and improved productivity.
The additive also aids dimensional stability in the final part. Hyperform HPN products achieve a balanced orientation of crystal structures in PP that is proven to improve stability and reduce the resin’s warpage/anisotropic shrinkage behavior, even in demanding injection molding applications such as caps and closures, and for parts that operate in elevated-temperature environments. Hyperfrom HPN products can also be safely included in PP used in food-contact, medical and pharmaceutical applications.

NOBLE CAUSE
Clean Plastics Waste as School Fees
The key to a sustainable future will be to train the new generation to develop local recycling solutions and
enterprises, to make sure the precious plastic we use is
not discarded to harm nature, but repurposed to create new products to improve peoples’ lives.
A
t Akshar Foundation in Assam, we have developed an innovative approach to education at our model school. At this school, the only currency we accept for paying school fees is clean plastics waste.
Building a Novel Foundation The school is designed to teach children in poverty how to get a good job,
start a business and beautify their environment. At Akshar Forum, students
are employed at school, ‘earning and learning’, in order to prevent them from
dropping out to pursue child labour. Students work as teachers for younger students. Students also work after school in the ‘carpentry workshop’, building furniture for the school; the ‘school print shop’, printing worksheets for the
school; the ‘school landscaping enterprise’, growing food and flowers for
the school; and in the ‘school plastic recycling centre’, collecting plastic from homes around the school and making new products from it.
Twice a week, students are employed to collect clean dry plastic from homes
and businesses around the school, and teach people to stop burning or
dumping their household plastic. They also upcycle the plastic into building
materials called ‘eco-bricks’. Students are currently building machines (based on designs from Precious Plastic from the Netherlands), including plastic Mazin Mukhtar CTO / Founding Trustee, Akshar Foundation, Guwahati

A
re we not exposed to this subject far too much, far too many times? Probably yes, but do we really build this theme in our business plan? We have known global organisations committing to low environmental carbon footprint, being vocal about the Paris Agreement on climate change. A lot of times we forget that we can also contribute, in whatever smaller ways, to distinguish and build our business. Every major petrochemical / oil company, in late ’90s, surely had the muscle and money to wither any storm and build a stronger business. However, in none of the board meetings, environmental impact was the central issue. Fast forward to 2021, almost all leading companies are technology based; not just IT, but also manufacturing (read Tesla). Central theme of emerging corporates is based on sustainability; be it intelligent mobility, environmentfriendly technologies and a connected world. Even within the oil companies, there is a growing clamour for environment-friendly technologies. A recent board meeting of a leading oil conglomerate took prominent place in the news, where an environmental POLYMERS Communiqué l April - May 2021

Water
With a harvesting system and sewage treatment plant (STP) / effluent treatment plant (ETP), we aim to reuse almost every drop of water in our system. Not a single litre of water is thrown down the drain. Infact, with appropriate collection, we aim to have ‘Net Zero’ water consumption by the end of the year.
Electricity
Similarly, with smart energy consumption and solar plant, we plan to save 240 tonnes of CO2 in a year, roughly equivalent to CO2 absorbed by 12,000 trees.
Product Innovation
Key product innovation such as environment-friendly eCiLON PA6 helps promote circular economy with excellent mechanical strength and rigidity. Till date, we have helped circulate 10,000 MT of plastic since we launched this brand in 2013.
It’s for All to Contribute
There are many ways where we can help contribute to the environment. There is no single solution that fits all. to adapt to the ever-changing demands of our customers in order to survive. In order to address this, we have a team of engineers who are constantly doing research and development.
Q. In the year 2016, what prompted the organisation to gear up for offering a complete automation solution for the moulding machine manufacturers with the launch of the IML Robot Series? As I said before, we strongly feel that in order to survive we needed to change. We were primarily a screen printing machine manufacturer and we needed to diversify to minimise our risks. We were studying the various other forms of decoration that we can provide to our customers apart from screen printing. That’s when we came across IML technology. We saw that it was an untapped market in India and there were many benefits for the customer; so, we decided to get into IML robot manufacturing in India.

Pranav Bhalara, in dialogue with POLYMERS Communiqué.
Q. As you have been using machines acclaimed globally, what attributes, both technical and commercial, drew you to shortlist Rajoo Engineers as your preferred supplier for your latest Extrusion Coating and Lamination (ECL) line? I must say that there have been a few reasons for this choice. Infact,
to tell you, when Rajoo first launched their ECL line, I had approached them and knowing my requirements, they asked me to wait. If that was not the case, I would have been their first customer.
Coming back to the question, Rajoo Engineers is a known supplier, a
local supplier with easy access. Attributes that I think are crucial for making such a decision.
To add, going by what our beloved PM promotes, ‘Vocal for local’, I
thought I should also stand by that and promote our Indian suppliers,
being a responsible citizen. Hence, I approached them and expressed my wish to go for an ECL line from them. I am of the opinion that we need to encourage and promote Indian manufacturers, of course they
should be able to deliver on machine performance coupled with good aesthetics and sturdiness.
The pandemic further highlighted to me the importance of a domestic
supplier. In fact, this machine decision was taken in the previous year when the pandemic first wave had begun. Going by the trend of the
pandemic, we could sense that this would not go away soon and we
would have to deal with unnecessary delays in spares and technical support if we rely too much on the South East Asian

are looking for. Here, it is important to
understand the typical Indian mindset; as a buyer we would want maximum value for our money. This sentiment
stems from the fact that as Indians, we
value our hard-earned money. Typically, we want all the possible features and
parts and assemblies put together in feel Rajoo has taken even the minutest of care to ensure all aspects are covered
when it comes to technology and has integrated the bought-out assemblies well, whether it is related to the hardware or software.

Q. What is your message to the Indian flexible packaging industry when making capex decisions? With my 14 years of experience in this industry, I can clearly say that cost is not the only factor to make this choice.
An important criterion which led us

remarkable effort to have a production line installed in the plant and have your customers use it for testing and
also for their production as well. This is a commendable effort and I think it’s a first in the industry in India.

Molecular Cross-linking of Polymers The Chemistry of Bis-diazirines
Polymers of the type, PET-graft-PE, PE-graft-PP,

properties. Polymers tend to flow under the influence of heat and pressure, a property known as creep. Cross-linking improves the creep properties of polymers
and also reduces the coefficient of thermal expansion. Cross-linked polyethylene
is used in the wire and cable as well as in medical applications, cross-linked polyethylene films are used in shrink wrap applications, cross-linked polypropylene
is used for thermoforming applications, cross-linked polystyrene is used as
ion-exchange resins and cross-linked acrylic polymers are used in adhesives and coatings applications. Rubbers are cross-linked using sulfur and auxiliary chemicals

Designing Safer Chemicals Part III: Countering Toxicity with Isosteric Replacement
One way to reduce pollution at source is to design safer chemicals. The toxicological aspects of chemicals must
be considered while designing the new chemical or an effective substitute for a given ‘unsafe’ moiety.
Design Principles The most important principle of green chemistry is not only to reduce Prof. (Dr.) G. D. Yadav

hazard of the chemical or the process, but also to design alternate cheap
and benign chemicals which are inherently safer since there has been an ever-growing concern over the adverse effects of industrial chemicals
and synthetic materials on human health and environment. The advances
in molecular toxicology (as given in Part I and II published in the earlier issues of POLYMERS Communiqué) and the relationship between chemical
structures and important properties exploited for industrial applications will be helpful in designing safer chemicals. Indeed, majority of industrial

understanding of toxicology or the relationship of One way to reduce pollution at source is to design safer chemicals. The life cycle analysis of the chemical must also be a part of this new paradigm.
The toxicological aspects of chemicals must be
considered while designing the new chemical or an effective substitute for a given ‘unsafe’ moiety. Figure 1 shows how different groups in the
benzene ring can alter its LD50 value dramatically and Figure 2 lists some of the substances, including water. Paracelsus had rightly said, ‘everything is a poison, the dose decides it’.

purines and pyrimidines, P=O of RNA and DNA lead to toxicity. Ideally electrophilic substituents should
never be incorporated in a moiety. However, it is introduced many times for commercial utility. This provides an opportunity to change the character of the chemical to make it safer.
Acrylates contain alpha, β unsaturated C=O
system and undergo Michael addition and this is the reason for carcinogenic properties of acrylates. Incorporation of a CH3 group on to alpha C (to
give methacrylate) decreases the electrophilicity (i.e. reactivity) of the beta C, hence methacrylates do not undergo 1,4-Michaels additions easily. Methacrylates have the same commercial efficacy.

CHINAPLAS 2021 Online Media Day
Media Day has already become a tradition of CHINAPLAS. This
special ‘new releases’ platform presents an opportunity for companies to showcase their innovations. This year, because of the challenges presented by COVID, some guests presented
from within the Media room, while the others were online
presentations. The Media presence was also mixed - physical, vide a software as well as through various streaming platforms.
Seven companies utilised this platform to showcase their latest! The companies who utilised this platform were DuPont,
Wanhua, Alibaba, Arburg, Kingfa, LyondellBasell and Röhm.
They showcased their latest advancements and highlighted its benefits to the plastics industry globally.
The event was streamed live to make it available for remote attendance. “Both

Meeting Success in a
Global Alliance The activities of acquisition and joint venture are not easy and simple.
There is vision, planning
and preparation needed to move ahead in this
direction. It is necessary to have the involvement of
various departments in an
organisation so as to provide the inputs and advice.
Further you may also need
external agencies who have
specific expertise in this field to help and advice on how to move ahead.
G
rowth of any organisation is the aim and focus of promoters or, in other words, the management. Growth of an organisation also, in
turn, grows the revenues, the morale of people working with it and
its presence in the business circle.
Is Global Alliances Imperative? In my earlier write-up on project management in the POLYMERS Communiqué,
Feb - Mar 2021 issue, I had mentioned about organic and inorganic approach to growth, where with appropriate project management one can find success. Every
organisation has focused and planned growth parameters and not all organisations would be interested in multiple sectoral business ventures nor they can acquire by themselves knowledge and expertise for these various businesses.
This brought in the thought and approach for global alliance (may be national or international) and the words like ‘acquisition’ and ‘joint venture’ became buzzwords.
In such activities, through an inorganic growth approach, you widen the wings of your business multi-fold. This may not be only in your field of activities, but can be a totally out-of-the-box sector of business where your present business has no connections.
In most favoured state, the industry feels more comfortable if they are in alignment with a similar sector and join hands to increase their presence or contribution to their
business. This scenario has been witnessed in the automotive sector where there
has been consolidation of vendor counts and suppliers were being classified as Tier
1, Tier 2 and so on. The Tier 1 supplier was considered to be the most favoured and sole supplier. The automotive industry expected that Tier 1 supplier, with the help of
Tier 2 and 3 suppliers provide a complete packaged solution. The profit margins were
reducing from Tier 1 and beyond. In India as well as globally, many organisations started acquiring and also creating joint venture activities to reduce dependency
on Tier 2, 3 and beyond and also managing good profit margins as a single organisation. Few names that come to my memory are Motherson Sumi, Delphi and Varroc who have seen substantial growth by following the route of global alliance
(they are present in India as well as globally and today supply to global customers). Vendors and organisations who did not match-up with the industry requirements either cease to grow or had to leave the business or get acquired by others. Weekend Delights Friday night to Monday morning, a time to unwind, rejuvenate and be geared to face another grueling week. Each one of us use this ‘my time’ is different ways. And why not, weekend is a time for expressing ourselves. We all have known the personalities featured here as astute business stalwarts; as life is more than just business, we at POLYMERS Communiqué, have started this section called ‘WEEKEND DELIGHTS’. Live life... Vishal Agrawal
Managing Director,
R C Plasto Tanks & Pipes Pvt. Ltd.
A famous quote says, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” I believe in this quote and make my Sunday a joyful one. My weekend is just a Sunday. So, Sunday comes with a lot of leisure time, relaxation and a positive attitude. I rise with the sun and start my day with a morning walk with friends or family as I’m into fitness and believe a healthy mind and body goes hand in hand. I follow it by an elaborate breakfast with my family as I’m a foodie by heart. I love to spend time with my family and invest a lot of time in my children too. I spend a few hours for social organisations and community networks. Listening to ghazals and soft music relaxes my busy mind. Reading has always remained my passion and the thirst of learning makes me watch many educational videos. So, the weekend for me is disconnecting with the world and connecting with my family, friends and society.
Suresh Chander Director,
Radiance Bio Synthetics Pvt. Ltd.
After a busy week’s work, I unwind over the weekend. I love to listen to old movie melodies. Music uplifts my soul. I spend a lot of time playing with my pet dog ‘Mishty’, a super loving and cute furball. In the afternoon, I read a book, generally non-fiction, or catch a movie.

My weekends are to rejuvenate me so that I can be full of energy for the next week. I love cooking and that’s how I like to spend my weekend wherein I invite my close friends over home and entertain them by serving food delicacies cooked by me. The food tastes more yummy with my close-knit friends and family around me.
Avinash Gurijala
Management Executive,
EQIC Dies & Moulds Engineers Pvt. Ltd.
Badminton and running have been a part of my daily morning workout regime. Staying fit always helps me focus and it sets the day into motion with loads of positive energy. During the weekends, I prefer to go on long drives with my family.
Ashok C. Domadia MD,
Fitwell Polytechnik Pvt. Ltd.
Being a ‘weekend warrior’ may sound off-putting, but any exercise is better than no exercise - especially when having a tight schedule during the weekdays. I spend my quality time going for cycling with family, so may I say it a family time as well. One of the great things about cycling is being with nature in and around our forests - which is the miles of off-road, traffic-free cycle trails. I believe, aside from the obvious health benefits, people who engage in different weekend activities often are said to have better spatial and cognitive intelligence.

Save Material Costs The EPC™ die allows producers to quickly adjust the product width by moving the internal deckle blade system to open or restrict flow to the ends of the die. By adjusting individual components within the deckle blade assembly, edge beads can be reduced to minuscule amount.
EDI® Deckle Maintenance Cart
Improve Efficiency & Safety During Maintenance The deckle system can be quickly retracted to simplify the clean-out of gels and carbonized polymer build-up in the die lip or rapidly removed for die maintenance events. Optional EDI® Deckle Maintenance Carts, customdesigned to fit each system, ensure maintenance work is performed at a safe height and reduce potential damage to critical deckle parts.
