Sustainable and Degradable

Pressure-sensitive Adhesives

Ecologically more friendly carbonate polymers can structurally mimic the widely used acrylic polymers in PSA applications. Adhesives based on carbonate polymers hold promise in a variety of PSA applications in pharmaceutical / biomedical and consumer products.

Dr. S. Sivaram

Former Director, CSIR-NCL Honorary Professor and INSA Senior Scientist, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune While the focus on sustainability is predominantly on large volume commodity polymers, polymers used in smaller volumes and in more specialised applications also need to be viewed through the lens of sustainability. One such class of polymers is adhesives which are ubiquitous in many applications. Global adhesives market is valued today at about USD 50 billion which is likely to increase to about USD 85 billion by 2030. One of the important trends in the 21st century is the drive towards ecologically sound (e.g. recyclable, degradable) products. While adhesives, since they are typically used in small amounts, are not at the forefront of this trend, recyclability and degradability are likely to become more important in the future. Since very often adhesives are found on the surface of other polymers (in the form of labels, stickers etc.), ‘green’ adhesives could make either recycling or disposal through composting easier and safer for the entire product. The goal is to reduce the environmental impact of the production processes and to implement eco-design concepts that will allow bonded parts to be reused or recycled through the development of adhesives that could be degraded and de-bonded on demand.

A Look Into PSAs

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) is an important member of the family of
