HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley was fully renovated in 2013 and reopened as a new Hospital. However, as part of that renovation, the original aged Emergency Department was not upgraded. In 2015, HUMC PVH initiated the design and construction of a new replacement Emergency Department in a vacant portion of the Hospital. The new ED was positioned in the front of the Hospital,

and site planning reconfigured a number of vehicular patterns to facilitate and improve the patient experience. The new ED contains a full functional program including urgent care, pediatric care, emergent care and trauma. The ED also contains a new CT Scanner and digital X-Ray Room. A total of 25 private patient treatment rooms are provided. A state of the art decontamination and isolation room suite was designed.

Nyack Hospital proposes to modernize and reconfigure their existing Emergency Department, currently located on the Ground Floor of the Doctors Building on the East side of the Hospital campus through a phased alteration and expansion program. The existing Emergency Department, supporting circulation and related functional program area, including the existing Hospital Lobby comprises approximately 15,750 square feet of area. Additionally, there is a side yard area located on the North side of the Doctors Building, Ground Floor capable of supporting a 8,500 square foot building expansion, which would be laminated to the existing structure. This will be a mixed occupancy expansion.

The roof of the proposed addition will provide space for roof top mounted Air Handling Equipment which will be located on the North side of the infill and screened from the view of the patient rooms on the Second Floor by a visual screen. Further infrastructure improvements will include emergency power system upgrades and medical gas infrastructure upgrades. Improvements to the existing Main Lobby of Nyack Hospital are also included.

EMERGENCY TRAUMA CENTER HACKENSACK UMC HACKENSACK, NEW JERSEY

The increase in patient volume in the Emergency Trauma Department has resulted in crowding of patients in the department which sees over 111,000 patients each year and admits over 2,000 trauma patients. The project began with expanding its existing Emergency Trauma Center with 75 new private patient treatment rooms, state of the art specialty areas of care including Geriatric, Oncology Cardiology and

Trauma Care with new radiology and computerized tomography equipment, as well as future growth opportunity of its Surgical Department as part of a 3-story infill building. The expansion of the 5 phased construction project consists of over 35,000 SF of renovated area and over 23,000 SF of new construction.

OPERATING ROOM MA STERPLANNING H A C K E N S A C K U M C PA S C A C K VA L L E Y + L A K E C H A R L E S M E M O R I A L H O S P I TA L PDS provides Operating Room Master Planning and Operating Room Upgrade services to numerous healthcare clients. Our work experience bridges from renovation of single operatory rooms to hybrid operating rooms to large scale operating suite expansions and multi phase modernization programs. We are currently engaged in two largescale operating room studies. One for Lake Charles Memorial Hospital is a six-phase renovation and expansion of their surgical suite encompassing 16 operating rooms.

We have also recently completed an expansion study for long-range expansion planning of the operating room suite at Hackensack UMC Pascack Valley. Our abilities span from planning and utilization analysis through the use of custom designed algorithms to assess OR, PACU and Inpatient bed capacity needs, to the details of advanced robotic operating room design.

SURGICAL & MEDICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNITS L A K E C H A R L E S M E M O R I A L H O S P I TA L L A K E C H A R L E S, LO U I S I A N A

Lake Charles Memorial Hospital is in the process of a major expansion to their Intensive Care Units. In total, a total of 39 ICU beds will have been constructed new or renovated. A new 16 Bed Medical Intensive Care Unit augments an existing 18 Bed Intensive Care Unit. The existing unit will also be renovated as a later phase and be designated for Surgical Intensive Care. This will be a state of the art ICU and has been designed to exceed current code minimums for patient spatial allocation. It will feature a just in time supply distribution system and all storage has been coordinated with infection control to minimize contamination, and reduce waste.

Nursing has been distributed across the floor with substations adjacent to every pair of patient rooms, reducing the size of the central station to afford additional space for support spaces. The central core of the unit has been perforated with a staff only corridor system that will allow traversing of the floor as opposed to circulating around the core, reducing travel distance and improving staff response time. Five Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Beds will also be renovated.

The PICU occupies approximately 3,100 square feet of purpose-built space designed for the treatment of pediatric cancer patients and their families. Instead of accessing light through traditional exterior windows, the new patient rooms gain daylight access through the atrium of the recreation room through sky windows. By placing the patient rooms in the light filled atrium and creating an acoustical barrier both on the ceiling and in the walls, the design team was able to optimize the core space of the PICU and significantly improve patient care operations. As the centerpiece to the core, sits the nurse

station with its internally illuminated face and subtle abstract pattern. Acoustical studies have been performed and the sky window design allows both patients and visitors to view the atrium skylight and exterior skyline while attenuating noise or distraction from the adjacent recreation room. Further, the sky window feature has been designed to allow for a controlled and diffused daylight environment the pediatric intensive care room to accommodate the light sensitivity needs of this critically ill patient population. This was a phased project, with an active construction site on an operational floor.

ONCOLOGY CLINIC OF THE FUTURE M E M O R I A L S LO A N K E T T E R I N G C A N C E R C E N T E R NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center engaged Pomarico Design Studio to work with their research and development and a clinical team to advance a concept to create the exam room of the future. Extensive communication within the team, construction of full scale mock up rooms and utilization of three-dimensional modeling yielded a revolutionary design concept. Each exam room contains features such as touch zones

for medical devices, integrated ITS systems, integrated lighting that is indirect and contains luminous ceilings. Automated curtain tracks that transform the exam room into a consultation room and integrated millwork that conceals such devices as sharps, gloves and waste to minimize impact to the patient experience and ease anxiety. The exam table transforms into a chair to allow a personalized consultative experience with the caregivers.

An existing 89,032 square foot building located at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Basking Ridge, NJ, is an outpatient facility that offers diagnostic services, treatment, and follow-up care for a wide range of cancers to New Jersey residents. Of the facility’s existing four floors, only the first, second, and third floors were occupied prior to this project. The projects intent was to relocate services and treatment space to the unoccupied fourth floor, and subsequently renovate and expand existing services on the lower floors. The fourth floor is 17,036 SF. It contains a Surgical Oncology Suite, Medical Oncology, Dermatology Suite, Administration Suite, and supporting staff areas.

The third floor is 11,816 SF. Departments consist of Medical Oncology, Research Lab, expanded Pharmacy, and expanded Infusion treatment space. The second floor is 2,585 SF and contains a new Breast Imaging Suite. The first floor is 7, 907 SF. It consists of a renovated Entry/ Lobby, Food Service, Retail Pharmacy, Lab Medicine, and Phlebotomy.
