26 INTERNATIONALPOLOCLUB.COM

I am pleased to announce that IPC will be at the center of a cultural pastiche this season, when the best in polo meets the best in interior design, fashion and cuisine. Partnerships have been forged with Palm Beach’s famed shopping mecca Worth Avenue, as well as the Design Center of the Americas (DCOTA) and New York City’s Bagatelle Bistrot to enhance, the already, superior experience. Notable brands from around the globe, such as Piaget, Nespresso and Veuve Clicquot, along with Ocean Drive, Whole Foods and Bessemer Trust will once again join us as sponsors to celebrate the spirit and heritage of polo at IPC. The entire IPC staff and myself would like to take this opportunity to thank our esteemed sponsors, advertisers and you, our members, for your continued support and loyalty, as it is you who are at the heart of the growth and vitality of IPC. In closing, I would like to invite you to continue to enjoy the legendary polo lifestyle here at IPC as well as the beauty, the majesty and the electricity of the quintessential game of kings.

Sincerely,

John A. Wash, CCM President of Club Operations

The markets are up significantly in the past few months. And yet investors remain frozen in place, not knowing how to move forward, or who to trust. But doing nothing is no longer an option. To take advantage of up markets and limit losses in down ones, investors will need to think differently than in the past. At Bessemer we’re privately held, so we make recommendations based on client needs, not some parent company’s investment products. Managing wealth is all we do, and we’ve done it well for over 100 years. Our investment team is continuously reassessing the evolving economic landscape, from longer-term projections to shorter-term opportunities. We invest your money right alongside our own, and give you access to the same portfolios and planning techniques that we use for our owners and ourselves. Add to that the most dedicated Client Service Teams in the industry, and it may explain our outstanding client asset retention rate of 98.4% for the past 10 years. If you’re still sitting on the sidelines, uncertain of how to get moving in the right direction, call us. We’d love to talk about how you can get your own personal recovery started. t is all about Wellington for this issue of Polo Magazine, as we celebrate the thirty one years since the first match was played here in 1979. The United States team historically beat the Argentines, and started a tradition of polo, lasting over three decades. Since then, Wellington has grow n almost unrecognizably, but at its heart there still remains a passion for the eques-

trian lifestyle, which seems to bind this close knit community so uniquely. Wellington, now home to the Palm Beach Polo Season, Winter Equestrian Festival, and the Wellington Classic Dressage ever y w inter, is considered the world’s premiere luxur y, equestrian

*** oday, Wellington, Florida is considered the world’s premiere luxury equestrian sports destination, and is home to the largest conglomeration of performance horses in the history of the world. The Palm Beach High Goal Polo Season is held at the International Polo Club, and is center stage for the winter season, and just across South Shore

Boulevard, the show grounds are home for the top equestrian hunters, jumpers and dressage horses from all over the globe. The two mile square south of Pierson Road encompasses private barns on both sides of the road, that are the most lavish equestrian facilities ever built. It happened so fast, that people who have lived it can’t fathom the speed in which it happened. Polo has a history of just over thirty years in Wellington, yet in its first year, 1979, one of the greatest

games ever played in this country happened here when the “all American” team from Texas, upset the “all Argentine” team in over time in the World Cup. This set the tone for excellence in polo in Wellington that continues to this day. This is a story of an amazing history of land deals, horse deals, and the migration of a high society populace, that share a passion for horses in a small Florida town.

WELLINGTON Beginnings In 1952, Roger Wellington stood up in the swamp buggy and surveyed the land his father bought. He looked for land marks but there were none, only a sea of grass that was part of the Everglades water system and ran from central Florida to the southern part of the state. The year before, his father, Charles Oliver Wellington of Boston and New York, purchased an 18,200 acre tract of land in Palm Beach County with his friend and realtor, Bink Glisson. Bink had grown up a local Florida boy and in his youth, he was used as an errand boy for several illegal bootleg establishments during prohibition. Bink used to dive down at appropriated spots in the intercoastal waterway and retrieve submerged burlap bags containing contraband whiskey that was hidden there by rum runners for local speakeasies. He would also taxi affluent revelers, attired in black tie and evening gowns, in a rowboat across a waterway to Club Unique, later called Cap’s Place. Cap’s was an illegal bootlegging, and later gambling establishment and restaurant, run by Bink’s uncle, Captain E.T. Knight. Patrons would signal Bink with a code of flashing headlights to let him know they were not the police.

largest strawberry patch in the world, along with orange groves, nurseries and other produce. In 1971, the Wellington trustees put some land up for sale, and the Investment Company of Florida purchased 7,400 acres for close to six million dollars and the community of Wellington was born. James Nall, the head of ICOF with his crack staff of Guerry Stribling, Joan Sawyer, Jenny Graf, Bill Gregory, and Serafin Leal converted over 11 square miles of undeveloped farmland into residences and estates. On June 25, 1972, the great father’s day land rush, was held offering one thousand home sites in Wellington. The same year, the one hundred and fifty acre Lake Wellington was created and a golf course was constructed using the fill from the lake to shape the course. Within the next eight years, a company named Core Point began to develop the area, designed as a yuppie bedroom community. One of the main planners for this was Guerry Stribling. By 1975 five hundred residents lived within Wellington’s borders.

He cleared pathways so the natural setting would not be disturbed, and planted philodendrons randomly among the cypress. The paths throughout the forest created a ghostlike atmosphere of beauty and mystery. Riding through the Big Blue forest, there is always an enchanted quality in that even when it is bright and sunny outside, it is almost pitch dark under the one hundred and fifty foot cypress trees.

Seeing the need for a central stage for the high goal in Wellington, he began building a stadium, and in 2004 the first games were launched at International Polo

or thirty years, parts of the history locked within Wellington are the historic polo games that have been played within its boundaries. International Polo continues at International Polo Club. From Juan Carlos Harriot, to Memo Gracida, Gonzalo Pieres, the Heguy family, the great American team of Evans, Barry, Armour and Wayman and now Adolfo Cambiaso, Wellington has hosted every major player and every great polo pony in the sport for over three decades. In 1995, the Village of Wellington became incorporated to receive Federal money. With it came federal housing and a

diversification in its population that has been enjoyed by the polo community for years, which has a populace made up of people from all over the world. Thirty eight thousand people lived in Wellington by the year 2000. This year the figure expected to reach close to sixty thousand. No one has been able to figure an accurate amount of horse people that come into the area each year. If ever yone that made a living off of Wellington horses or the Wellington horse crowd donated five dollars, there would be enough to buy a solid gold statue of a horse to put at the entrance of the town. The greatest horses to walk the earth in several equestrian disciplines for the last thirty years have performed in Wellington. Their legacy fills their respective Hall of Fames. Builders, retailers, bars, restaurateurs, landscapers, and ser vice personnel have made their life’s work off the horses. For now, the symbol that represents and amazing thirty year histor y of polo in Wellington is the stadium at International Polo Club and Piaget field. It is the polo showcase for polo in the world, the nation, and not the least of all Wellington.

t has been said that the only problem with the American

Dream, is that it happens when you are sleeping. The

human condition has the innate

desire to venture past what we

POLO & POP CULTURE FEATURES & PROFILES

Probably the most A-list of all social anthropologists, Andy Warhol was a master of observing our habits, trends and our relationship with the world around us. Our affinity and affections for a variety of pleasures, past times and styles have often transcended their genres to meld with other mediums. The success of polo and people’s fascination with it, has allowed the sport to lend itself to the art of fashion probably more so than any other instrument. From monarchs to knights to equestrian glamour, horseplay has long been associated with wealth and privilege. Nobility a key factor in the carriage trade, was something that Parisian couturier, Thierry Hermès understood very well. His inventory of perfectly crafted carriages, harnesses, saddles and bridles matched the upscale reputation and family legacies of his client roster. Royalty, politicians and a decadent elite class of society were the few who could enjoy pieces of Hermès art in a 19th century world. It appears as though some things never change. Though through craftsmen and visionaries such as Hermès, the world has been exposed to a level of artistry and detail synonymous with polo- sheer perfection and utter precision in design, demeanor, and attitude. Since it’s days of Victorian prestige Hermès, the initial house of equestrian commodity, has left history books, editions of Vogue and many flips through society pages its own contributions to pop culture- the Kelly and Birkin bags named for their muses Princess Grace Kelly and Jane Birkin. Comparably coveted in some circles as much as food and water, a vacant spot on a waiting list to get one, is just as celebrated as the bags themselves. If only Hermès himself, could foresee the market that would spawn from outfitting horses.

A

chieving a notion of decadence, sense of privilege and a tour behind the doors that border ordinary and what most believe to be extraordinary, is a story older than even Perez Hilton’s famed blog itself. An even older tale, and one that knows all too well the power and mystique that comes from behind closed doors, is polo.

Revered for its reputation of exclusivity, luxury and quality, the sport of polo has had the ability to make many wonder what it would be like to not just window shop. Rather, what it would be like to buy into a world of unsurpassed style and reign. Quite the departure from the humble farm horses that have contributed to developing civilizations and economies, since it’s creation over 2000 years ago, polo has ever so elegantly been adopted as a thread woven into the dynamic fabric of our popular culture. Though, do not fool the sport of kings for a Campbell’s Soup dress.

82 INTERNATIONALPOLOCLUB.COM

With a philosophy that dictates refined elegance and a sport that personifies sophistication, it was not long before polo influenced other couture houses to opt for its fundamentals of design, while capturing inspiration from it’s traditions. Christian Dior’s rendition of the Saddle Bag and Gucci’s equestrian inspired monogram echoes articles and accoutrements associated with equestrian and polo culture, while developing a modern fan base for a not-so-modern sport.

“From monarchs to knights to equestrian glamour, horseplay has long been associated with wealth and privilege.”

f music loves fashion, than Madonna is no exception. On her wildly successful Confessions Tour, Madonna collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier as he designed the ultimate equestrian ensemble, worthy of a Queen of Pop. Complete with a pair of jodhpurs, riding crop, top hat with horse’s tail and of course, five inch heeled riding boots, the outfit seen around the world will forever be remembered as a piece of pop memorabilia. Madonna is an icon and Britney Spears is a pop culture princess. With the ability to speak to tomorrow’s generation, this paparazzi angel and trash mag darling has staked her place in history by shining bright to the top and not-so-gracefully crashing to the bottom, time and time again. Through the erratic theatre that has been her career all eyes are always on her. With the stunning backdrop of the Bella Vista Polo Club grounds, Spears’ Radar music video glorified the sex appeal encapsulated with polo and brought it to the forefront of the mainstream. With cameos from polo players such as; Jason Crowder, Santiago Wulff, TJ Barrack, Parker Flannery, and Mariano Fessetta, ‘MTV’ers’ enjoyed a glimpse into the polo world with none other than Mariano Gutierrez as her love interest. Yes, even polo knows no boundaries when it comes to love.

As long as luxury continues to mutate into a stronger, new strain of ego, a market will always exist. And so goes economics 101 and the rule of supply and demand. Perhaps due to the lack of delicious scandal; as it is a gentleman’s sport after all, polo has never been integrated more into current times than it is in present day. With the recent warm reception that polo has received in the latter part of the twentieth and early part of the twenty first century, we see its many influences take shape in our popular culture. Ralph Lauren whose design philosophy has epitomized Americana at its best, is credited for the timeless polo shirt. Alas, truth be told that the infamous shirt was originally introduced to the world by Rene Lacoste in 1933, under the guise of the term “tennis shirt”.As, polo culture ultimately prevailed; Lacoste’s creation began to be referred to as the “polo shirt”, and thus a star was born. Becoming a staple of musthave preppy attire in 1972, Lauren appointed the image of a polo player upon his mount, as a trademark for his POLO brand and its success started to spread like the gossip of spectators on the sidelines of the field. The silhouette has since been reproduced by countless designers, sold at a myriad of retailers and has found a place in closets, hampers and hearts around the globe. This timeless piece has become an article of affordable luxury. For a reasonable fee, one can wrap themselves up in a morsel of polo luxe.

POLO & POP CULTURE FEATURES & PROFILES

In 2005, Lauren released the Black Label line, which is befittingly represented by the poster boy for polo in pop culture, Ignacio Figueras. While, the six-goal player has been referred to as the “Brad Pitt of polo”, he is affectionately known as “Nacho” and has become an ideal image for the Black Label brand. With his undeniable good looks, athletic ability, charisma and obvious penchant for modeling he has proven that integrating a real life polo player for the POLO brand has been a most successful endeavor for both himself, and his Black Label sponsored team, BlackWatch. After all, you haven’t truly made it until you have been on Oprah. That’s right, no passport gets cleared at pop culture customs faster, and in a more effective manner than with the diva of talk herself. Initiation into the infamous Book Club, or the opportunity to show off your couch jumping antics however silly, has become a sign of mainstream success. Although Figueras opted to stay seated while he appeared as a guest on the Oprah show, his appearance invited millions of viewers who may not have otherwise been exposed to the sport, the opportunity to gain an intimate look into polo, if not a few minutes to marvel at a handsome subject. While on the show, Figueras expressed a profound respect for his relationship with Lauren as he stated; “he has given me the opportunity of giving the world more of an idea of what my sport is all about, which is one (of) my missions in life.” A mission to cast a spotlight on a sport rooted deep in tradition, while defining athleticism and true sportsmanship are contributing factors to Figueras’ desire to share and celebrate what he loves, with the world. In an effort to further expose the masses to polo, Figueras helped organize the second annual Manhattan Polo Classic, on Governors Island in New York. The exhibition was open to the public and free for all those willing to participate in a day of polo. With a dash of royalty, compliments of HRH Prince Harry, a pinch of society and a whole lot of athletic excitement, spectators enjoyed a true polo experience. Figueras’ efforts to spread the gospel of polo have extended far beyond the glossy pages, and billboards of high fashion. Rather, he has endeavored to reach a fresh and impressionable demographic, with his guest appearance on the ever popular adolescent drama Gossip Girl. His cameo on the season premiere where he played himself essentially exposed a new crop of Gossip Girl fans to a modern and hip injection of polo.

“After all, you haven’t truly made it until you have been on Oprah.” 84 INTERNATIONALPOLOCLUB.COM

E

qually striking and charismatic, eight-goal player Nick Roldan is a man that shares Figueras’ hopes for a polo future filled with a wide spectrum of fans and added visibility. Roldan is pleased to join Figueras’ battalion as a soldier in the fight for polo popularity, and feels an obligation to the game that has given him so much. He believes that; “ although polo has been under the radar as the public has seen it as a sport of the elite, it is actually about real athletics.” Roldan, like many of the sport’s celebrated athletes, supports opportunities to share polo with an often discerning public. Along with a distinguished roster of polo talent such as; Nacho Figueras, Facundo Pieres, Cristian Laprida Jr., Aldolfo Cambiaso, Javier Novillo Astrada, Oli Hipwood, Sam Hopkinson, Julio Gracida and Rob Archibald, Roldan was praised in Vanity Fair as one of Polo’s Hottest Horsemen. When asked about the favorable title, a modest and flattered Roldan noted; “I consider myself an athlete with discipline first. I have a respect for the sport and the people around it and I think it has the potential to grow tremendously”. It appears that somewhere along the line, the public has forgotten the legitimacy of polo and the reality that it is indeed a rapid, high contact, dangerous sport. A sport, that requires years of intense training, mental strategy, streak of daring madness and an absolute regard for your teammates.

Like Figueras, Roldan grew up in a middle class home, miles away from thoughts of royal teammates, corporate sponsorships and celebrity. Taking to the sport at five years of age, Roldan’s affinity and passion for polo ultimately shaped his future career. When discussing whether financial considerations were required for polo, more than other sports, Roldan explained that; “money can be a concern with any sport that is taken to a professional level, but polo as a hobby is achievable through organizations such as the Polo Training Foundation”. Since its inception in 1967, the charitable foundation has encouraged youth to experience polo while bringing it to the forefront. Through funded programs, young individuals have had the opportunity to learn to play the sport and umpire matches while fostering leadership and team building skills.

blood lines and the courts who entertain them. The bad PR that polo has received has failed to recognize the sport for its strengths. For the pillars of tradition, heritage and sportsmanship that it stands for, rather it has opted to focus on notions of inapproachability. It appears as though polo has finally locked down the right publicist, for as never before the public is welcoming an education into polo. People are genuinely asking questions about the game itself, as opposed to who is on the guest list. With men like Roldan and Figueras whose heart and intentions for the sport are clearly evident, the public are given an in depth and personal look into what has, till now been an occult world, shrouded in stigmas.

Polo’s philanthropic outreach and impact has extended far beyond the field. The brainchild of Blake Mycoskie, TOMS Shoes is a forprofit footwear company that aims to provide sensible shoes for individuals in developing countries in South America, Africa and anywhere else they are needed. With a love for polo, Mycoskie found himself in Argentina taking polo lessons, when he stumbled upon the humble alpargata shoe and the devastating reality that many people there had simply gone without simple footwear. Worn by Argentinean farmers who tended to horses for centuries, Mycoskie’s discovery of the alpargatas fueled a profitable, new trend. Inspired by the colorful and traditional wraps of Argentine polo horses, Mycoskie introduced the TOMS Wrap Boot. Quick to receive design acclaim from even the most discriminating shoe addicts, TOMS Shoes donates one pair of shoes for every boot sold. In true sporting style, TOMS Shoes teamed up with the polo apparel man himself, Ralph Lauren create a line of slip-ons for his Rugby collection. Charity never looked so good. As its sidelines are filled with a barrage of fans that include some of the most stylish people on the planet, there is no negating the fact that polo is synonymous with style. But since when should good taste be a handicap? It is fair to say that although, many sports unite communities; polo culture has always prided itself on creating an unparalleled social arena for all participating. Deemed “the most glamorous day in the English polo calendar” by Britain’s Telegraph, the Chinawhite Rock the Polo event, fused together prolific brands and characters such as Cartier, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew Williamson. Having grown annually to become the world’s largest polo event with over twenty thousand in attendance, spectators have enjoyed watching their favorite teams, such as Argentina and England, vie for the coveted Coronation Cup, whilst their ensembles vie for some attention of their own. Polo is a fashionable sport that has lent itself to inspire many popular trends, clearly at the cost of often being misinterpreted. Roldan explains; “polo and its players do have a style sense, but we work hard. We love the field, the horses, the intensity of the sport, everything else are perks. Polo comes first.”

Nevertheless, one would have to beg the questions; is unlocking the door to the gilded cage going to somehow diminish the exclusivity, cachet and mystique that so many find intriguing about the sport? Will polo ever be incorporated into society’s culture and rituals enough to one day include mass merchandising and even tailgating? In addition to Ralph Lauren’s Black Label line, polo teams have been sponsored by the likes of notable brands such as; Mercedes Benz, Audi, Coca Cola and Bud Light, just to name a few. With this outlet the sport has reached new levels of visibility while initiating a widespread awareness and demand that polo enthusiasts are confident will grow. Many popular brands have embraced polo while soliciting its players and teams to represent their products, and rightly so. Unlike many sports in the mainstream spotlight, polo exudes a sense of magical allure, that for a variety of reasons the public is inherently drawn to. An allure fueled in part by curiosity and in part by stereotype it is a fascination that is derived from both misconceptions and adoration. Or perhaps, it’s simply the hope that just maybe, the American Dream does exist- it just happens on the polo field.

It is not difficult to see where the misrepresentation has stemmed from, after all the sport of kings is viewed as just that- privy to royal 85 2010 POLO MAGAZINE

YOUTH& AMERICAN TRADITIONS IN POLO Written by Charity Baker

“Life is a game, boy. Life is a game that one plays according to the rules.” The Catcher in the Rye Mr. Spencer in Chapter 2

LEGACY PROFILE COLUMNS

CB Scherer Playing by the rules and making new ones, this is the unremitting spirit of CB Scherer, a gifted athlete with respect for the sport and a lineage of polo players and enthusiasts. Both his grandfather and father played professionally, 6 and 5 goals respectively, in Wellington, where he recalls enjoying polo his whole life. This is exactly how the young polo players today are involved in the sport, from the beginning.

AMERICAN SPIRIT CB quite naturally took up the sport of polo. With a history of sports including 22 seasons of baseball, lacrosse and some motorcross under his belt, he began playing kid’s polo tournaments in middle school. Practicing at South 40 Club in Wellington, and jumping young, CB got the Polo in motion early. “By 8th grade I started to take polo seriously”, CB relays, although compared to any person his age or otherwise, CB’s involvement already far surpassed that of a mere hobby. Following his father’s footsteps, he has only attended schools with polo teams. Culver Military Academy, an established boarding academy located in Culver Indiana, played a very important role in CB’s development as a young polo player during high school. Tom Goodspeed came to coach at Culver during CB’s freshman year, which was also his first exposure to indoor arena polo. Common to most stories of success, CB was cut from the Culver team at the beginning of the season during his first year. Without dismay he immediately set to work to create an opportunity for himself by practicing solo, hitting cage balls, and ultimately bringing Tom Goodspeed to the effort. And in the fashion of true leadership, CB also started his own team of all rooky players. “Tom was my biggest training influence” recalls CB with absolute conviction, ‘the hardest training ever’, he says. To compliment Tom’s excellent training was 24 hour accessibility to the campus polo facilities at Culver, and so efficiency became key.

MAKING HIS WAY Tom’s arrival created some waves. This new coach had an intense program of practice four times a week. CB talked to Tom on a regular basis, this was priceless polo exposure for him. Ed Little the Director of Horsemanship, wanted to get to Nationals, and Tom worked every day with his players to make it to the Finals. And so that first year they arrived beating the defending champs and winning the semi-finals, but losing to Toronto. Attending the National finals 4 years in a row, they lost to Toronto every year but

they played national all-star team, and were voted on the top 4 all star team junior and senior year. CB made ‘Player of the Year’ his senior year while at Culver Academy. When I asked CB where success comes from he answered succinctly--hard work, dedication and time. He works hard to keep his grades high, to train his horses both at school and at home, and to develop his polo skills year round. While at college CB has expanded his polo venue to include new locations and experience by playing with other polo professionals. Currently enrolled at his father’s Alma Mater of the University of Virginia, where he plays varsity polo, on both indoor and outdoor facilities, which does he prefer? Of course outdoor! However, he claims the indoor arena atmosphere is a good one, and can be lots of fun. Comparing the experience to an ice hockey game, if the turnout is good and the crowd is motivated it can make the experience full of energy which can feed the polo players in a very positive way. CB jokes, after-all...’It’s like a party, if the room isn’t full of people it’s not much fun’. At this new level of playing for CB he enjoys an audience.

THE SHOWMAN There was a good turnout at Nationals last year. His outfits outside of playing at UVA include visits to playing for John Goodman in Houston over the summer, Lexington National, lots of time with the Pierres Brothers Facundo and Gonazlito, and trips to Wellington which he puts among the top of his list. He spent this past summer in Nashville at Graymar Farm with Robert Lipman. And over the holidays during Christmas he plays with his dad and brother in the Port Mayaca. Carrying the tradition, CB longs to keep polo in his life forever. He will always live somewhere where there is Polo. CB’s short term goals are to win Nationals this year, again. Again, Return to Nashville, and re-visit Texas where he spent time with Sugar Erskine and Chris Nevins. California is on his list of places to explore; perhaps with a higher goal rating he can get that opportunity soon. Favorite role model is Owen Rinehart, who helped CB when he was younger get involved with polo on a professional level along with his dad and grandfather of course. This Engineering and Economics major, with a Business minor, would like to make polo a full time profession, an inherent sense of responsibly allows him to keep his options open while attending college. CB has played his whole life for fun, professional development and to honor the tradition. Like everything polo requires true passion, dedication and hard work, CB has that in spades.

LEGACY PROFILE COLUMNS

Isabella Wolf The future for polo lies in the young stars like Isabella Wolf. She is currently in her first year at University of Virginia as a 1-goaler; Issy to her friends and fans is a name in the making. Most recently honored with the MVP at the Miami Polo Cup 2009, Issy trains with Luis Escobar when she is not at school. She is incredibly enthusiastic about the sport and the tradition of polo, with a remarkable insight for both. ‘It is the only sport that I know of which is co-ed, a contact sport, equestrian, and involves teamwork’. She cannot explain her love for polo, but who can explain love? Issy plans to make polo her full time professional career. This lovely lady is a serious player.

TRADITIONS She is charming and upbeat, and proud to come from a historically supportive environment of ‘horse-people’. ‘My grandparents were horse-people’ she says, the love of horses has transcended many generations from both sides of her family in forms of riding, jumping and fox hunting, a sport of her father’s. As a very young girl Issy began riding, a mere 18-month old, her mother, who most closely encouraged her, is a professional jumper rider in her own right. It was at nine years old, when Issy began to practice polo with her mom. At 13 she began to attend practice games at the school she was attending in her home state of Virginia. She says that polo is an essential family tradition, and her parents were both influential in starting her young with riding. Issy sees polo as a sport and a tradition that is passed down, although notably she is the first in her family to pursue it on a professional level. She recognizes that it might be a stretch for most people to intimately comprehend the goals and lifestyle of an aspiring professional athlete. But Issy can claim the unending support and love from her entire family and contributes this gift as an element to her success and determination.

A NEW VOICE

UVA has a girl’s team, all women, and Isabella has made many new friends as a result. She quotes that some of the best friendships in the whole world she has made through her connection to polo. This is a social sport with an integral social life; it is a private society for the players. For instance, when Issy entered the Miami Beach Cup this summer 2009, she did not know ‘anyone’. However since that event she has connected with many of the players, not to mention she had lots of fun, and continues to keep in touch. She makes friends as she goes in all parts of the country and world, and this is one of her ‘polo goals’.

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE Support, friendships, and mentorships are a big factor with Isabella. John Goodman for instance has had a significant impact on her pursuits along with Luis Escobar who she sees when visiting her mother in Santa Barbara, California. In addition, summers are spent in Virginia and Saratoga, New York. However, the fun is always in Florida with Wellington a regular stop. Issy loves to travel. She wants to experience as many places as possible and meet just as many people. She reports to formally practice 3 times a week, and has a game every Friday through October. Training areas at UVA are on grass which she prefers to indoor arena playing, although beach playing is the most intense, especially for the horses. Future goals: to get as highly rated as possible, abundant travel with the game, and whenever she can Issy wants to ‘take every opportunity handed to me, not focus on one particular team experience’. Having said that, teamwork is everything and she says, ‘you can’t find another equestrian sport with this involvement of team work’ which she loves. She is absolutely involved in training her horses, she sees it as an essential part of playing polo, not to merely ride anything handed to you. Issy has designs to learn as much as possible about training her horses. Miami is the most fun destination because the crowds are enthusiastic. Be it the warm weather, or the deep polo tradition running through, which can be found at Wellington, a supportive crowd is very appreciated by the players. Issy certainly loves playing to a crowd, ‘it’s great for the sport’, and it’s exhilarating! ‘Polo is an addiction’. True words from a blazing star.

As a young athlete she has usually been drawn to similar sports of intricate coordination such as field hockey, soccer, lacrosse, and track. ‘Hand-eye coordination’ she chimes, that is where she honed those talents off the polo field. But what about life on the polo field, which had been mostly dominated by men? Issy shows unwavering strength as typically the only female player in a game, where the ratio of men to women is overwhelming. POLO TEAM EFG Bank/Equus & Co. Written By John Hood

W

hen the world polo community descends upon Wellington for the 2010 Palm Beach Polo Season, one of the teams people will be keenly watching is the team fielded by Equus & Co. and sponsored by EFG Bank. Though the team has only been on the International Polo circuit for three years now, they’ve made more than a rather admirable go of things. In fact in ’09 EFG Bank Polo Team made it to two High Goal Polo Game Finals – the Bobby Barry Memorial Cup (vs. Mount Brilliant) and the George Hass Cup (vs. Lechuza Caracas); and they made it to the Semifinals of the Pennell Cup too.

Much of that success must be credited to EFG Bank Polo Team captain Jim Whisenand, founder and CEO of Equus & Co., the company that arranged EFG Bank’s entry into and global presence in the world of polo. Whisenand’s not only blessed with business acumen, but his global in-country expertise is right in line with the polo Sport’s prestige. In fact it was Whisenand who also put together the much-heralded Bombay Sapphire Polo Team of 2003-2006. And he was at the helm when the Bombay Sapphire Polo Team was in the finals the Outback Polo League championship in 2005. With Equus & Co.’s polo team sponsorship presence, Bombay Sapphire (owned by Bacardi) and EFG Bank have supported a team in the annual Polo Players Support Group’s (PSSG) 40 Goal Game with 8 of the best 10 Goal polo players in the world for a total of 80 Goals. In 2005 and 2006, Bombay Sapphire was on the winning side of this extraordinary 40 Goal game. All eyes are on the 2010 EFG Bank Team in the 40 Goal Game for it to have its first victory. All of this Equus & Co. organized corporate polo team sponsorships assist PPSG in – the purpose of the 40 Goal Game – raising money for injured polo players and grooms. No better give back to the Sport of Polo than that.

Whisenand’s an old hand at the ancient sport, and his equestrian roots reach all the way back to his Midwestern childhood, as does his love of and passion for the ponies. “I’ve been riding since I was eight,” Whisenand says. “First, United States Polo Club events, and then many years participating in combined training for 3 day events. I have always had a passion for polo, and equestrian sports.” And though Whisenand “played some polo during the summer months in college,” he “didn’t get serious about the sport until participating in the Sport at International Polo Club in Palm Beach.” Also, that was the year when Equus and Co. entered the Palm Beach polo arena and began carving out their unique niche and platform in the world’s highest marketplace. “Equus and Co. was formed to be the Private Advisor to the Global Equestrian (Polo) community,” he explains. “We focus on creating eight different sectored global corporate-sponsored polo opportunities.” “One of our eight sector corporate sponsorship categories is wealth management and we have an affiliation with EFG Bank, which is the third largest private bank in Switzerland with 55 offices in 30 countries. We’ve created and organized a global polo team sponsorship program with them. Keith Gapp, Head of Strategic Communications and Media, and Member, Executive Committee of the Bank has been strongly supportive of the Program. For EFG Bank, Equus & Co. has organized corporate sponsored polo teams and official bank sponsorships in Palm Beach (the platform), England, Sotogrande (Spain), Dubai, Shanghai, Argentina, Punta del Este and expanding in to new global markets in 2010 with a focus on Europe and Asia.” On paper (and in practice), Equus’s bringing EFG Bank into the polo fold is a natural. But the affiliation came to be in a rather roundabout way.

104 INTERNATIONALPOLOCLUB.COM

TEAM PROFILE COLUMNS

In addition to the Equus & Co. business, I have had an international law advisory practice in Miami since 1978,” says Whisenand. “And in that world we’ve constantly come into connection with many of the global financial institutions, and EFG Bank was one of them. Keith Gapp at EFG Bank thought that the affiliation with the international polo community would be beneficial for EFG Bank, plus they wanted to contribute something to the actual sport itself, and to establish the corporate sponsorship of global polo teams. EFG Bank wants to be a material participant in the global advancement of the sport of polo.”

Equus & Co.’s endeavors, however, extend well beyond EFG Bank and Palm Beach. And either “directly or via other corporate sponsors, [the company] supports corporate branded global polo teams in Punta del Este, Shanghai, and the Away Team as part of the Cartier International Day each July in England , participating in the Coronation Cup at Guards Polo Club w ith Prince Charles or the Queen of England presiding.” And while Equus & Co., has for the most part adhered to the more traditional global season, commencing each January in Palm Beach (International Polo Club), then to England for the summer, August in Sotogrande (Spain) and culminating in Argentina from September to December, Whisenand says that they’ve “looked at also being involved with Beach Polo,” and that he and Equus & Co. are even “entertaining the idea of entering a Polo Team in the South Beach Polo this spring. If what Equus & Co. and EFG Bank have accomplished in Palm Beach is any indication, they’ll undoubtedly take South Beach and global polo by the same proverbial storm. Granted its more reserved cousin to the north is mostly associated with high finance, but Miami’s most glamorous stretch of sand also attracts its share of heavy hitters, albeit primarily in the realm of arts and entertainment, but it’ll be exciting to see how Equus & Co. links the two communities, and corporate sponsored professional polo teams. Then again, the two already have at their core a common bond, and that of course is polo, a sport that has linked disparate peoples for centuries. And it’s a cinch that Whisenand has long had that fact in mind. With offices in Wellington, Miami and Madrid, and a global polo presence second to none, one might also say that Equus & Co. is already set up to serve as special liaison. And why not? The company certainly has proven itself to be all the right things to just the right people in each of the

world’s four corners. No reason why a few more of the right people wouldn’t readily agree. Equus & Co.’ s successful approach of integrating global companies and the sport of polo stems from their ability to speak both languages (global business + polo) and integrating the global business venues + the global polo venues with the Polo Lifestyle which is best emulated by a platform based at International Polo Club – Palm Beach. Predicated on America’s best polo at IPC, Equus & Co. then creates a bespoke global polo presence for the corporate sponsor in key countries and the fabulous polo venues. All the time making certain the corporate polo team sponsor is truly a peer participant of the Sport. Ultimately, Equus & Co. would like to see corporate supported polo team with the companies providing polo players with fully funded teams and multi-year contracts – always globally advancing the sport Yes, business may always be business. Still this is a sport that transcends the deal, no matter how artfully it’s been consummated. And just as Jim Whisenand has discreetly made his company the global leader in its high-powered niche, he knows that leading his polo team to the finals is but a small part of the charm and benefits inherent in the sport that he loves. “People play polo for the sport and the passion,” he says. “That always comes first.” Passion for sport and talent for business: sounds like just the recipe for that great dish called success.

Everyday in wellington is perfect. We love it here. Its home.

A perfect day in Wellington for me would consist of farm chukkas in the morning with family and freinds at Everglades followed by brunch at my Grandparents house, and yes there would be lots of Dora biscuits.. Watching a high goal game at IPC followed by dinner and drinks at the seventh chukka.

A perfect day spent in Wellington would have to be a pleasant sunny day at IPC (the winter polo capitol of the world) while watching the best polo players and finest horses in the universe engage in a sport that could be called the Last Mounted Wargame as we enjoy champagne and great friends at our tailgate!

“My ideal day in Wellington would start with an early round of golf followed by brunch. I would then go to the horse show, walk the course, do a little coaching and watch my horse win the Grand Prix. I would end the day with a celebratory dinner with family and friends at The Wanderers Club.”

The wonderful thing about Wellington is that you don’t have to go very far to be involved in horses, and you don’t have to own a horse to enjoy equestrian sports here. For my perfect day, the sun is just coming up at the horse show grounds, with the familiar bustle of grooms, riders, owners all getting ready for the upcoming competition. The rings are perfectly groomed and set for the day, and wherever you look, you can see horses -in the barns, in the warm-up and in the competition rings. The beauty of the horses, the spirit and elegance of the competition, and the camaraderie of friends. As the sun sets and the competition day ends, I go home to my family and three horses of my own. What could be more perfect?

124 INTERNATIONALPOLOCLUB.COM

My perfect day could either be a round of golf at one of our local courses with good friends, or enjoying the day at one of the equestrian events - dressage, show jumping, polo...You name it, we’ve got it! NEWS AROUND THE WORLD

By: Becky Feldman

A

s the Season concludes at the International Polo Club Palm

Beach, it is just the beginning of an exciting year of polo

that will take players, ponies and fans to the far corners of the globe.  The Palm Beach Polo Season sets the stage for the premier Teams and Players to watch, as they travel to Europe and South America, the Middle East and Asia, all striving to prove they are the Champion of this truly international sport. 2009 shared that there is no definitive victor, and the world cannot wait to witness the battle that will continue into 2010‌

The Harcourt Developments Queen’s Cup Guards Polo Club, England Sunday, June 14th, 2009 A well played match on both sides, resulted in Apes Hill capturing victory over Sumaya at this year’s Queen’s Cup. A Polo legacy lives on as Mark and Luke Tomlinson win the Tournament that their parents’, Simon and Claire, Los Locos Team won 30 years earlier in 1979. Though Luke Tomlinson led the Sir Charles Williams sponsored team for most of the match, it was Charlie Hanbury’s goal in extra time that clinched the win over Oussama Aboughazale’s Sumaya team, 12 to 11. Though Apes Hill came out on top, both the Most Valuable Player Award and Best Playing Pony, Russien, went to South African Ignus Du Plessis of Sumaya.

The Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup Cowdray Cup Polo Club, England Sunday, July 19th 2009 It was finally the year for Jean-Francois Decaux to fulfill his dream of winning the Gold Cup, as his team La Bamba de Areco took home the title. Though Dubai, with famed Adolfo Cambiaso Jr. leading the way, was favored to win, the Pieres brothers, Facundo and Gonzalito, accompanied by patron Decaux and Tomas Garbarini, triumphed as the underdog with a 13 to 10 victory to become the 2009 British Open Champions.

Coronation Cup Windsor Great Park, England Tuesday, July 28th 2009 It was England’s worst defeat to date as they were trampled by Argentina 12 to 5 on Cartier International Day. Polo superstar Adolfo Cambiaso Jr. received the Coronation Cup from Prince Charles, but 3-goal player Martin Valent was the Argentinean to be rewarded the player of the match. Audi sponsored England’s captain Luke Tomlinson, along with his brother Mark, Malcolm Borwick and James Beim fought courageously to stay in the match, and plenty of thrills were provided for the 20,000 plus spectators that crowded the field. However the combination of Cambiaso and Pieres proved too strong and the day ended with a score that England would rather forget. Tony Ramirez/www.imagesofpolo.com

Put on as The Rematch of the Argentine Open, this was first time that two teams with the maximum rating of 40-goals competed against one another in Europe. Sponsored by Rolex and featuring the world’s two leading teams, Ellerstina and La Dolfina, who are continuously battling for the Argentine title, the match was neck and neck throughout. It was clear how strong both teams are as they fought hard, showing off extremely high levels of skill, culminating in an 11 to 10 victory for Ellerstina, the 2008 defending Argentine Open champions. Though his team did not win, 7-goaler Guillermo Terrera, who came in to replace an injured Lolo Castagnola in the second chukker, impressed everyone by taking home the most valuable player award against the toughest field in the sport of polo. Sotogrande Gold Cup Santa Maria Polo Club, Spain August 28th, 2009 In a match the surprised everyone, Tattinger Dos Lunas beats Las Monjitas in extra time. The game looked lopsided early on, with Las Monjitas leading 7 to 1 in the third chukker. Dos Lunas pulled off a spectacular comeback and tied the match 10 to 10 at the end of the 6th chukker. Then, Gonzalito Pieres connected on a 40-yard penalty shot to clench the victory for the 11 to 10 victory.

Deauville Gold Cup Deauville Polo, France August 29th, 2009 Royal Barriere continued their undefeated streak and captured the Coupe D’Or, winning over Talandracas, 10 to 9. As in any major Polo win this year there was a Pieres involved. This time it was Facundo, who took home the most valuable player and top scorer prizes, as well as the best playing pony for his own Mayflower.

Tortugas Open Abierto del Tortugas Country Club, Argentina October 10th, 2009 Ellerstina defeated Pilara Piaget 14 to 11, making this the third year in a row that they have captured this title. Facundo Pieres was the most valuable player of the match with 10 goals to his credit. Pilara Piaget may have suffered from the absence of Agustin Merlos, who was suspended for 30 days during a match with La Dolfina the previous week. The Tortugas win allowed Ellerstina to set their sites on the ultimate prize, the Argentine Triple Crown.

The Argentine Open Palermo, Argentina December 12th, 2009 It was a battle of the country’s two favorite teams at the 116th Campeonato Argentino Abierto Movistar, presented by Mercuria Energy Group. Both have previously captured this title, but it was La Dolfina who won the prize this year, crushing Ellerstina’s dreams of the Argentine Triple Crown. The match was intense and exciting throughout, with Adolfo Cambiaso Jr. dominating the field with 11 goals. However it was Pablo MacDonough who won the prize for MVP and Mariano Aguerre who scored the final goal in extra time, solidifying La Dolfina’s 17 to 16 victory.

setting this range apart from the machines already available. Designed in a slim format to easily fit into smaller urban spaces, the machines evoke a downtown vibe and have a daring style. They were designed in two styles, both retro and high tech, to give designloving coffee aficionados more choices:
