WHAT’S IN A NAME? Shannon Greene Robb’s family lineage, on her mother’s side, originated from Arranmore and relatives still live there today. So, you’d think that this was all about paying homage to family. But, you’d only be partially correct… If you’ve had the fortune of laying your eyes on the beautiful and untamed landscape of Arranmore Island and experiencing the unique culture, you’d understand exactly why the name was chosen.

ARRANMORE (ÁRAINN MHÓR) ARRAN-MORE, NOT AYRANMORE.

While only five miles off the northwest Coast of County Donegal, Ireland, Arranmore is a place entirely its own. It’s a land where time slows down and life becomes simpler. Neighbors are family. And community is king. On Arranmore, there is a discernible sense of a love of life and a keen appreciation for family celebration. The community’s fierce pride of heritage, strong religious belief, a sparkling sense of wit and humor and a true love for music are all the qualities passed down through the generations of families of Arranmore. This is what it means to “Beo Spreag” or “Live Inspired.” You could say that inspiration comes naturally to the people of Arranmore. Stripped away of mainstream distractions and enlightened by tradition and heritage, their unique character is able to develop and thrive. It is this ideology that inspires Shannon and the entire Greene family, and one they have embraced wholeheartedly and hold close to their hearts. And now, it’s one that they share with their own community.

WELCOME

Dear Friends, We are very excited to kick off the 2015 season and launch the inaugural issue of Arranmore! This lifestyle publication features original articles and signature columns, and serves as a guide to our unique equestrian and cultural season. As a family, our lives have intersected with Polo for over thirty years. We are thrilled to open the doors of Arranmore Farm & Polo Club on July 18th for our first public Polo match, the Arranmore Polo Classic. We are also so proud of our 501 (c)3 not-for-profit organization, ArranmoreArts, which continues to foster the creative spirit and build community by providing innovative, interactive and inclusive education programs and performances to children and adults. Our InspirEd programs or “Jams,” allow students to play an active role in creating with professional artists. The CabCab signature summer concert series is held at Arranmore Farm & Polo Club and pulls together some of Chicago’s best performers. Over the past four years we have seen these events grow exponentially, becoming a “must attend” event on local calendars. Join us this summer and let us make our tradition yours. We look forward to seeing you. Cheers,

For the past 35 years, we’ve built our family business around the communities we serve, and our family is dedicated to finding a home your family will love.

On behalf of the United States Polo Association® and our member club, the Arranmore Farm & Polo Club, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the wonderful sport of polo. Arranmore Farm & Polo Club is a truly special polo facility. For fifteen years they have played polo privately, hosting players from around the world, attracted by their shared passion for the sport and the club’s pristine fields. This summer’s 2015 Arranmore Polo Classic marks their first public polo tournament, ushering in a new era of polo with a fresh perspective. Thanks to the dedication of player and club founder John Greene, polo will continue to thrive and reach thousands of new spectators in Chicago. Currently celebrating our 125th anniversary year, the USPA is pleased to share this day with you during a seminal year. Today, the USPA includes nearly 300 member clubs in 13 geographic circuits around the United States and oversees 40 national tournaments. Polo has grown and developed greatly since the founding of the United States Polo Association 125 years ago, while retaining many of the sport’s distinctive traditions. Changes in rules have made

match play faster and more exciting and have also made it safer for horse and player. Polo has incorporated leading-edge technology ranging from advanced motion sensors for swing analysis to video technology, including drones to provide video coverage of the vast polo field to instant replay and live streaming of tournaments. The USPA is tirelessly working to share our amazing sport across the country and to be more accessible to fans and potential players.

WELCOME

Dear Arranmore Readers,

It is exciting to see this happening in the Chicago area and I believe it is just the beginning. I cannot wait to see what is next for the Arranmore Farm & Polo Club! Sincerely,

Chuck Weaver Chairman, United States Polo Association

A FAMILY SNAPSHOT Patriarch John Greene fulfils his dream to create a top-notch Polo facility for our city.

39

J

ohn Greene was an unlikely Polo enthusiast. Born in Chicago to a working-class family, it was during a grammar school field trip to Rainbow Stables at the old O’Hare fields where he saw his first horse. “I remember everything about that day. I was hooked.” John

recalls. At 16 years old, he went back and got a part-time job working after school. The rest is history. It’s safe to say that equestrian sports have become John’s lifelong passion, second only to his family, which is apparent when spending any time with him. He lives on the same horse farm that he and his late wife Patti purchased over 40 years ago and has generations of love around him. John has owned Polo clubs and played Polo for over 30 years and continues to play very actively today. During the 1980’s he had a handicap of three-goals. Looking back over a lifetime of Polo tournaments, he considers playing with Antonio Herrera, a nine-goal player, and going on to win the Continental Cup with him as the most exciting sporting moment of his life. But it will be through Arranmore Farm & Polo Club, which he purchased in 1999, that he hopes to continue his legacy by creating a top-notch Polo facility for the area. Stepping back though, it was Fox Hunt that was John’s first equestrian passion, not Polo. He was a founding member of the Massbach Hounds and Fox River Valley Hunt near Galena, IL and has served as the Master of the Hounds since 1993. Over the past fifteen years, Arranmore Farm & Polo has hosted private matches and players from around the world. And now, they are positioned to launch their first public match this summer, The Arranmore Polo Classic July 18th. This is the first step in what he hopes will be a long standing tradition of Polo at Arranmore.

“I love the fields at Arranmore, you can Rock and Roll here.”

We are all very appreciative of the surrounding farmers who let us use their land. It is a beautiful area. AB:. Now, what was the evolution of Arranmore Farm & Polo Club? JG: I bought Arranmore in 1999. For me it was extremely pleasurable to come at this with a blank slate. AB: I can imagine. What was the most important part of that for you?

JG: Well, I could get into the hot tub. Multi-tasking you know SG: (Sigh) It’s all good dad. It’s all good. AB: So to what extent was your family involved in the sport of Polo? matches, in particular the john greene Realtor Polo Invitational, has been; “I have always wanted to go to a polo game; this is so much fun. This is such a beautiful location.” So now, we think it’s time to open it up to the market. AB: Do you still play Polo at Oak Brook? JG: Listen, I’m 70 years old; if there’s a game I want to be in it. I’ve played some great Polo at Oak Brook, but I love the fields at Arranmore, you can “Rock and Roll” here. SG: RIght on dad. AB: You had South Shore Polo Club way back in the early days in Wellington, Florida. How did things go from being the hub in Chicago to everything moving to Wellington? JG: There was a vacuum where people wanted to play in the winter and you cannot do that obviously in Chicago. Also, the Argentines wanted to come north for their winter. It was nice for those players. We had the last U.S. Open at Oak Brook in ‘78. The move to Palm

AB: These Polo families are so interconnected. SG: See, I think that this is why I am here. People think they know Polo, they think they know the “scene,” which is terrific. But what I saw growing up, were these great passionate players, their love of family and horses that now spans generations and is the backbone of the sport. AB: So John, any “rock star” Polo moments to share? JG: Well, for two years I played on the Midway Polo teams and I got eighty first class plane tickets . I remember at one point we had enough to take the whole family to New Zealand. SG: I remember that! JG: And then they closed down the airline before we got to use them all. SG: Dude, it was such a bummer.

LIVE INSPIRED

“It’s our motto for a reason,” says Founder and Executive Director, Shannon Greene Robb. “There’s a special feeling people get at an ArranmoreArts event, and it’s that essence we’re trying to capture and recreate. The desire to “Live Inspired.” ArranmoreArts was founded on the belief that unique performance and educational experiences awaken the creative spirit, inspire community and make life worth living. To do that, the organization builds collaborative communities by pairing young students with professional artists. It creates something inspiring and new by bringing people together to experience artistic performances that remind them who they are. ArranmoreArts supports the goals of local organizations, schools and agencies by working with them to curate art and arts experiences. ArranmoreArts was founded by Shannon Greene Robb to inspire and nurture the creative spirit in children and adults. She wanted to create an organization that could be a living collaboration of the three driving forces in her life: art, community, and family. Her more than 30 years of experience as a performer and instructor began with her graduation from The Chicago Academy of the Arts. She received a full piano scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, but tendonitis forced her into hiatus. She returned to Chicago and earned her Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education from DePaul University, followed by a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College. Today, she works tirelessly to inspire children and adults to live the ArranmoreArts motto.

“Ever since I was a little girl, we’ve had these incredible Fourth of July parties with friends and family. I remember it as being a day of sheer joy; connecting with others, dancing, feeling like you were a part of something special. CabCab was created to give people that same feeling. Little kids dancing with their grandparents, girlfriends and couples enjoying a night out, neighbors getting together - all under the stars in a beautiful setting.”

–Shannon Greene Robb

ARRANMOREARTS PROGRAMMING

InspirEd: ArranmoreArts’ educational arm is InspirEd, which was created to inspire students to find their inner passion for motivating them forward in their education. “In every person, there’s that something that moves them,” says Greene Robb. “That truly special something that gives them purpose in life.” ArranmoreArts’ InspirEd programs work from the premise that kids are naturally creative and that, as a rule, they live inspired. Each of the programs are referred to as “Jams,” a nod to both Greene Robb’s and Artistic Director, Lara Filip’s backgrounds as musicians. InspirEd Jams are offered at schools, libraries and public venues across Chicagoland. They cater to the personal nature of art, appeal to a wide variety of learning types and honor the inherent brilliance of each child. Through these unique programs, children develop confidence, practice problemsolving, use analytical reasoning, assimilate knowledge and think in new ways. 2015 “Jams” include: StoryJam: An innovative and fun stage-play that pairs professional actors with young audience members to tell original stories and reimagined classics. ArtJam: A hit with children and parents, alike, this multi-disciplinary program features professional artists who facilitate a “learn-by-doing” approach to specific skills within their genre. SongJam: A program that partners Grammy-nominated songwriters, musicians and producers with children to lead them through the creation of an original song. ‘CabCab’ ArranmoreArts’ signature event is an outdoor concert series called Cabernet Cabaret or “CabCab” that takes place every summer at Arranmore Farm & Polo Club. Each concert is based on a theme,

52

which inspires a song list. From there, professional artists are handpicked for each concert. Each CabCab concert is themed with music and performers plucked from the stages and concert halls across Chicagoland and, in some cases, Broadway. They rehearse and give a “one-night-only” concert experience where communities of families, neighbors and friends, new and old, come together. Guests are encouraged to “B.Y.O.P.” (Bring Your Own Party), including a full spread of food and drink, blankets, chairs and even tables as they enjoy an evening of music under the stars. And, if they forget, run out, or just don’t feel like bringing it along, artisanal beer and wine are always available for purchase along with unique ArranmoreArts swag items. Whether they decide to make their evening about cocktails and crudités or beer and fried chicken, attendees rave year after year that each concert was a night to remember. Even more importantly, all proceeds from these wildly popular concerts help support ArranmoreArts’ mission. Be a Source of Inspiration: Fill Our Jam Jar All of ArranmoreArts’ children’s programming is made possible by the generosity of corporate and individual donors, as well as public and private grants. “Our individual and corporate donors help keep the arts alive in our communities and inspire our young students to explore what drives them,” points out Rachelle Stoller, ArranmoreArts Board Chairman. The organization’s programs give students the opportunity to try new things, think out of the box, work together and find value in their voice. Greene Robb adds, “If we can “fan” their educational experience and get them to connect to their passion, we fuel not only their educational career but also their development into loving members of our community.” To learn more about ArranmoreArts programs or to be a part of the ArranmoreArts donor community, visit arranmorearts.org.

NINE WAYS ART PROGRAMS HELP CHILDREN MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE WORLD Open-mindedness–The arts opens a window to things your child may never have seen or thought of, expanding what they are willing to accept or think possible. Curiosity–Children hone their skills of observation, description, analysis and interpretation, which increase their desire to know and discover more. Self-expression–Children learn to express their feelings with or without words, through movement, sound, paint, clay and other metals. Logic–Dance, music, theatre, fine arts and other genres stimulate a child’s critical thinking and problem solving skills. Self-identity–By exposing your child to different points of view and different perspectives through the eyes of an artist, they can begin to formulate their own opinions and voice. Joyfulness–Let’s face it, the arts are fun. They give life to learning and can be very freeing. Cooperative–The collaborate nature of art helps your child learn to cooperate and work in pairs or on teams. Culturally Diverse–The arts can introduce children to cultures around the world, making them more accepting before they venture out into the world. Confident-Because there is not just one right way to make art, every child can feel pride in his or her original artistic creations.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, CABCAB A 2014 CabCab Performer Spotlight At ArranmoreArts, they do things a little differently, from their programming and performances to the artists who teach young students. In particular, the artists who appear on the CabCab stage include Jeff Award nominees and winners, Grammy nominees, Broadway and off-Broadway actors, and seasoned performers who’ve toured with some of the biggest names in the business. These are people who love what they do and have honed their craft. They most certainly “live inspired.”

Understanding Polo

By Pat Greene

Originally written by Pat Greene and published in July 18, 1980 by the Naperville Sun

I

n today’s very sports conscious world, I am all too aware of the need to understand a sport and its rules before one can every hope to create a public interest. I have embarrassed myself and my family on far too many occasions by asking such distasteful questions as what does “love” mean to a crowd of real tennis fans. My high school cheerleading career was blackened the fateful day I led my school in the cheer of “hit ‘em again harder” when in fact, it was our heroes who were sprawled all over the field. My lack of knowledge regarding horse shows became somewhat evident several years ago when I presented a room full of our local foxhunt members with what, in my own estimation, was a very reasonable question. “What do they mean by the term under saddle?” I further discredited myself by stating that I had attended two horse shows and observed that the majorit y of horses were indeed under a saddle. Because of my initial feeling on the sport of polo has changed so drastically as I have acquired an understanding of the game, I would like to explain what I consider to be one of the most exciting, competitive sports available. It requires the knowledge of team play, the talent of top horsemanship and the courage of a jet fighter pilot. Polo definitely has a contagious effect on

both its participants and its spectators. In Newsweek ’s April 30 th issue, Pete Axtheim wrote of his doubts regarding the attraction of polo. His coverage of the Michelob Cup, which compares to football’s Super Bowl, however, inf luenced him to say the following: “The jet setters have been hiding a terrific game from us masses.” “One of the most exciting sports events I’ve seen “and “It’s easy to get used to polo.”

playing Polo

Polo does not necessarily have a season since it can played in an arena or outdoors on grass. The size of the ball and several rules do vary between grass and arena polo. Since we are in the midst of summer polo, the following explanation deals primarily with grass polo. Often referred to as “hockey on horseback ”, the grass game is played by two four-man teams. A mallet constructed of either bamboo or fiber-glass is used to

take a three and one half inch wooden ball down a 300 yard field and strategically place it between two upright goal posts. At times the ball may travel up to 100 miles per hour. Once a goal is scored, the teams reverse direction allowing for the wind factor. A helmet, similar in design to a construction worker’s hat is worn ball players who have the option of wearing a face guard. Leather knee guards and high boots protect the legs from mallets, fast moving balls and contact with other players. Riders driving their mounts at high speeds will move their opponents away from the play with saddle to saddle contact or “hook an opponent’s mallet while he is in the at of swinging. The good player knows the exact location of every man on the field at all times and continually shouts instructions to his teammates. A seemingly dangerous game, all rules deal with the safet y of the player and the horse. A player cannot cross in front of another without allowing a reasonable distance. He cannot strike another pony while hitting at the ball. He cannot ride into a shot. He must “bump” (make contact) from a less than dangerous angle. He cannot “hook ” above shoulder level, nor can he reach in of a pony. Safet y is stressed and enforced by two mounted umpires who are responsible for deter-

page 63

mining the severit y of the foul. Based on the severit y, the ball is placed 60, 40 or 30 yards from the fouling team’s goal for penalt y shots. Severit y also determines whether the goal mouth will be guarded by the opponents. Any member of the team which has been fouled may take the penalt y shot. That decision usually is made by the team captain before the start of the game. When the two umpires are in disagreement on a call, a “third man” or referee observing from the side lines will give the final decision The game consists of six seven-and-a half minute periods called chukkers. A game of constant action, the clock is only stopped for fouls, injuries to players or horses, or because of broken tack. Once the clock is stopped, any player may change tack or horses. It is not uncommon to see a player gallop feverishly to the side lines for a new mallet when he has broken or lost his, as this does not constitute reason for stopping the clock. Players change horses after each chukker. Should a player choose to replace a fatigued pony during a chukker, play continues while he leaves the field to make the exchange. The better ponies will be played twice during a game spaced in chukkers at the beginning and end of the game. A game ending in a tie will go into sudden death.

Though not ponies in the true sense of the word, the majorit y of polo ponies are Thoroughbreds. They are preferred for their athletic abilities regarding speed, endurance and stamina The ponies must sprint, runt to top speeds, stop within a stride or two, do a 180 degree, and sometimes, a 360 degree turn on their hind legs and react instantaneously to the rider’s command. Their legs are wrapped with bandages for tendon support and for protection against a carelessly swung mallet, or form one leg striking another. Their manes are shaved and tails braided so as not to become entangled in a fast swinging mallet. In more serious, higher goal polo, many players will own upwards of six or seven horses allowing for the possibilit y that a horse will become lame or need to be rested Some lower goal cup players own one horse which they play two chukkers per game as many as four times a week. Players are given a rating by the U.S. Polo Association based on their defensive and offensive team value as well as on the qualit y of mounts. The Polo Handbook considers the horse to be at least 70% of the game, and players Thoroughly agree. A player may be rated any where from a minus one to a ten goaler. Sixt y percent of the 1500 players in the United States carry a rating of one or below and only 46 are rated

above five goals. In no way does this insinuate a poor qualit y of polo since a one goaler in polo would be considered the equivalent of a good intermediate in most other sports. A five goal player can easily become a professional. There are presently only five ten goal players in the world – all Argentinians. Tournament teams are compiled according to the player’s collective ratings, therefore, a ten goal team would consist of four players whose ratings add up to ten. Played in many countries around the world, polo was a very popular sport prior to World War II and seems to be seeing a definite resurgence of enthusiasm in terms of the number of participants as well as spectators. Don’t pass up the opportunit y to see all of the excellent polo that will be played in the Midwest this summer because not only is it “easy to get used to polo”, it’s great to get “hooked!”
