Letter From The General Chairmen

Dear Friends of the American Red Cross, As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, it is with great pleasure that we present the 2016 American Red Cross Designers’ Show House. We are pleased and honored to be serving as General Chairmen for this illustrious event. We extend a warm welcome to our new designers and heartfelt thanks to the designers who continue to contribute their time and talent. This year we visit a beautiful Art Moderne style house, former Fire Station #3 for the City of West Palm Beach. The designers’ careful eye to detail, scale and proportion is truly represented in each and every space. It is our hope that you will find the designers’ inspirational and educational, as this is a true hallmark of the interior design profession. We would like to thank our homeowners, Keith and Gretchen Miller, who have generously donated their house for our event. Your participation as our guest is a tremendous support for the local efforts of the American Red Cross. Your contribution brings education and awareness to our community, as well as bringing life-saving services to those in need. On behalf of the American Red Cross and the 2016 Designers’ Show House team, we thank you for your continued support.

Letter from the Board Chairman & Chief Development Officer

Thank you for joining us for the American Red Cross Designers’ Show House! We are proud to be celebrating the 40th anniversary of this event. Each year, in South Florida fire related disasters outnumber all others, and we respond with food, shelter, and emotional support for those affected. Fittingly, this year’s Designers’ Show House gives you the opportunity to explore a stunning, Art Moderne former fire station, originally built in 1938. The City of West Palm Beach decommissioned the fire station in 2006, when it was purchased by the current owners and transformed into the beautiful home you see now. The Designers’ Show House would not be possible without our creative and talented designers, committee members, corporate partners, and many others who give so much of themselves to the humanitarian mission of the Red Cross. To them, we offer our sincerest thanks and gratitude. World peace leader and social activist Desmond Tutu once said, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.” When a disaster occurs, Red Cross staff and volunteers focus on resolving people’s immediate emergency needs with warm meals, a place to sleep, and clothing, enabling those affected to get back on their feet and see a bright future on the horizon. We are proud to be part of the world’s largest humanitarian network, with 13 million volunteers in 187 countries. Working together, we help respond to disasters, build safer communities, and educate future humanitarians. Today, as you travel through this beautifully designed home, take a moment to reflect on how your support of the American Red Cross helps bring hope to the most vulnerable and readies our neighbors’ return to their homes after a disaster. With your continued support, the American Red Cross is able to offer assistance when families need us most. Welcome to the 2016 American Red Cross Designers’ Show House!

The American Red Cross Presents the 2016 American Red Cross Designers’ Show House The Historic “North Station” Erected 1938

The 2016 Designers’ Show House Journal

T

he American Red Cross 2016 featured home is the historic “North Station,” a former firehouse for the City of West Palm Beach built in 1938. The Art Moderne style property

was purchased by Keith and Gretchen Miller in 2006, and renovated, into a 4,500 square foot residential property. “I’m always looking around for the next thing to work on,” said Miller, a builder and renovator who has concentrated on redeveloping West Palm Beach’s northern neighborhoods, “I like interesting and unique properties”. He certainly found that with the unique “North Station,” designed in an Art Deco style known as Art Moderne or sometimes Streamline Mod-

erne. The home’s horizontal, blocky architecture with rounded corners and incised lines evokes the glamorous ocean liners of the era. The choice of the “North Station” highlights one of the most critical missions of the American Red Cross - assisting those affected by fires. Comfort and elegance wash over visitors as they step into the lightly painted room. Underfoot, a neutral plush carpet grounds the room, inviting guests to slip off their shoes and crawl into the pillowy bed. Glamorous, interesting, and sexy come to mind for this bedroom, a design which is inviting and warm with beautifully appointed bedding with accents of blue and orange. Interesting handpicked art adorns the lightly painted walls. A custom tortoise shell Chippendale headboard draws the eye to the room’s focal point and provides a contrast to the plush and sumptuous fine Italian bedding. MASTER BEDROOM

Room Description The Master Bedroom hearkens to a 1970’s Malibu beach house, with all of the essential natural world elements, as reimagined for an Art Deco Florida setting. An inviting slipcover style upholstered wing bed rests on a wool and jute patterned rug, sumptuously anchoring the space. A streamlined wood dresser with warm brass details elegantly rests to one side of the room, filling a niche. Raffia covered nightstands add complementary texture to the softness of the bed while sculptural metal lamps are reflected in oversized mirrors above the nightstands. Diffuse sunlight illumines the space through gauzy linen curtains, which sigh in a cool breeze off of coastal waters. Ivory colored grasscloth walls with flecks of silver metallic strands play off the organic and modern aesthetic, adding an additional textural element to the space. An oversized sheepskin pouf in a corner of the room invites one to succumb to its enveloping comfort. A large brass chandelier, centrally located, draws and commands the eye. Fresh white and supple tan textiles layer in the room to complete the textural embodiment of 70’s luxe. Together these elements create a soft, halcyon palate that reflects a certain carefree era, updated with a contemporary interpretation. 56

The 2016 Designers’ Show House Journal

Mr. Fhillips produces his own furniture line, The Jack Fhillips Collection, which may be viewed on his own website or at EJ Victor.com. Mr. Fhillips’ design philosophy is that ultimate style is measured by comfort and suitability.

After seeing the historic former fire house, interior designer Jack Fhillips was inspired by the way the homeowners transformed it into a modern masterpiece. The geometric lines and symmetry are a perfect platform for just about any type of furnishings. Keeping this in mind Mr. Fhillips selected pieces of furniture that would complement the space from his collection at E.J Victor. The furnishings reflect Mr. Fhillips’ style, using a few traditional pieces to add a bit of style finesse and charisma to the space. The geometric architectural ceiling treatment has been repeated in the new fireplace mantel designed by Mr. Fhillips. The color palette was very much influenced by the latest trends in the fashion industry. It consists of a mÊlange of beautiful blush and neutral fabrics, making sure that the room is formal yet casual enough to be usable and not shocking to the eye. The final product creates a soft, dreamy space, masterfully disguising challenges posed. The textures of the soft grey fabrics add to the sensuous yet elegant environment. A bit of shocking color in the artwork adds a punch to the room. The photography was done by Jack from artifacts out of his homes. Over the consoles are art panels done by Ryan Meehan, who loves to use the interplay of stark contrasts in his work. The woven sisal area rug with the slightly metallic banding adroitly synthesizes the mixture of casual texture and a bit of glamour.

Room Description Creating a beautiful “first” impression as well as a lasting “last” impression was one of the goals of our design of the Entry Foyer. By enveloping the space with a soft texture through the use of a gorgeous warm-gold woven grasscloth, we created a backdrop for the beautiful furnishings, exotic draperies and brightly colored art that echo the streamlined Art Deco influences within the house. A feeling of glamour and elegance, the highlight of that era, is captured in this inviting space with the highly geometric mirrored console and mirror. On the opposite wall, gold toned bookcases, architectural in design, showcase collected treasures from around the world. The texture of an antique rug plays off the soft color of a metallic glazed ceiling coffer featuring a handblown glass light fixture of shimmering gold. Leaving the house after a visit, we hope the visitor is left with a lingering image of the timeless elegance of a bygone era. STAIRCASE & LANDING

Room Description Stairs are often the only means of communication between the floors of a home. Architecturally, staircases make a statement, either one that is strictly about function, as in a straight run staircase, or one which chooses to celebrate the rising from one floor to another. This staircase chooses the latter as a form of expression and seek to serve as gallery and entertain the senses as one ascends or descends. The staircase as a journey begins as a straight run onto a landing where one can stop to view the artwork and the double height space and then turns to allow one to arrive at the upper landing. The works of art on display are from local Florida artists. The window covering is an ovular Perspex plastic in Tyrian purple, meant to mitigate the strong sunshine. The upstairs landing’s feature wall is covered in a custom wallpaper based on a Andy Warhol design. The furnishings feature a custom designed mirrored console and T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings bench. Lopez Group of Palm Beach Jobe Lopez

Lopez Group of Palm Beach P.O. Box 2065 Palm Beach, FL 33480 T: 561-514-8440 F: 561-514-8442 lgrouppb@aol.com lopezgroupofpalmbeach.com

Biography From early childhood Jobe Lopez showed a natural inclination towards creativity and genuine love for horticulture. The introduction to the work of world renowned English landscape designer Montague Russel Page, Brazilian architect Roberto Burle Marx and Spanish architect Fernando Caruncho were a major influence on the development of the foundation of many of the ideas and themes Jobe and his brother Josue still value and practice to this day. In the ever evolving world of landscape design, Jobe believes in one essential principle: that architecture, hardscape and landscape should be seen as a single feature, working harmoniously combined as one.

62

The 2016 Designers’ Show House Journal

This same concept can be seen in other artistic fields such as fashion design, where textile, textures and colors are combined as one to accommodate the human figure. By the rule of this principle, no two designs or projects are ever the same and each is truly unique. In his latest endeavors, Jobe has been involved in the creation of residential mega gardens. In some of his latest projects, he has been privileged to coordinate the installation and work under the direction of renowned landscape architect Jorge Sanchez. Working alongside an individual with such vast knowledge, artistic sensibility and genuine joy towards botanical plants, has proven to be a great influence and a motivating factor in Jobe’s never ending pursuit to expand his artistic and creative abilities.

Because of this specific project’s “Style Moderne” with its Art Deco influence, we approached the design of the landscape with a Minimalist concept and focus on linear details. We took into consideration the modern look of the property to ensure that the features used to implement the design of the garden were congruent with the architecture of the house. Using symmetry and modern streamlining, we were able to create a soft modern glamour that harmonizes with the garden with the contours of the building. To achieve this look, we choose to use artificial turf and compact plantings, as they are more malleable and allowed us to clearly define the lines we wished to accentuate/modernize.

KITCHEN

Room Description The kitchen is the heart of the home and where we gather to socialize, enjoy a casual meal, and create family memories. In keeping with the spirit of the home’s soft, rounded edges in the existing architecture, the kitchen cabinetry and appliances were refreshed to exude a modern take on deco design. Soft whites are contrasted with dark colors, cut glass, and the metallic finishes of the stainless steel. An island tile mosaic greets guests and beckons them to stay. The focal point is the island clad in a custom designed, digitally created resin tile mosaic top executed in metallic sheens and enhanced by new hanging, glowing, deco orbs. Plush counter stools allow for comfortable island seating while the visitor is enjoying a party or just keeping the homeowner, a gourmet chef, company. Vignettes display a view into the day to day lifestyle that the homeowners enjoy, and frosted glass cabinetry is filled with the accessories for entertaining. Light bathes the space from the south oriented windows, and overhead lighting creates a practical, workable kitchen with a side of glamor that you will never want to leave. translate their personal style and needs, sometimes stretching their boundaries while creating spaces that are beautiful and practical. Piper earned her M.B.A. from the University of Central Florida, then continued her education in interior design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. As much a function of her experience as her education, Piper’s conceptual framework comes from growing up in the tropical islands and extensive travel through Europe and South and Central America. Her style ranges from casual to formal, eclectic to traditional. Her acute attention to detail and personalized approach to design balance function with refined design and create distinctive interior environments.

Dramatic elegance is required for a dining room of this scale. The coal gray found in the marble fire surround is continued on the wall with a Beacon Hill silk fabric wallcovering. Floor to ceiling draperies of the same silk are trimmed with a delicate tape to give a touch of glamour and frame the silver sheer treatments. The dark gray backdrop allows a stunning custom chandelier by Louise Gaskill to take center stage. The color palette for the room was inspired by the large piece of vintage Murano glass used in the chandelier, accented with gilded vintage lucite chain links hanging from the bobeches. Acrylic Klimsos chairs with saturated amethyst velvet seats flank the large round dining table. They are grounded by an area rug of muddled gray wool and art silk in an organic pattern. Luxurious velvets, silks and embroideries in pale orchid and silver add texture and pops of necessary color. Two modern wing chairs upholstered in a silver mohair with embroidered outback provide seating for guests to enjoy a cocktail. The lines of the bar cart echo those of metallic ceiling. The result is a modern space, fit to entertain dinner guests or simply sip an after dinner drink by the fire.

Biography After many years as one of Palm Beach’s most renowned decorative painters, Scott Robertson shifted his career focus to interior designer. Trained as a fine artist, Scott worked for many years with the nation’s top designers to create some of this country’s most beautiful homes and to restore some of Palm Beach’s most famous interiors-in essence, a training in the art of interior design working with the most notable designers of our time.

72

The 2016 Designers’ Show House Journal

Now, he brings his artist’s eye and seasoned perspective to his own clients’ homes, creating personalized interiors that are both beautiful and practical, in styles that range from contemporary to classic. He believes that a respect for client’s tastes and experiences leads to balanced and functional interiors. “So many of my clients have led rich full lives, acquiring amazing collections of furniture, objects, and art; if I respect those objects and incorporate them into a new home I have honored both the client and the objects. It creates a more nuanced, interesting room.”

The inspiration for this bedroom came in an instant. The sales rep from Scalamandre was showing me the new fall collection and a large memo of the blue and white fabric that is the drapery behind the bed was flourished in front of me. I had my design. As with any room the inspiration can come from anywhere: the room itself, a client’s favorite work of art or, in this case, a fabric that “speaks to you”. The bold and solid colors of the fabric called for bold colors and strong pieces of furniture. Once the room was assigned, the pieces pretty well fell into place. A great lime green citron plays off the blue, and when I saw the Matouk sheets in Mandarin orange I knew I had my color palette. The room was blessed with great bones-the wonderful light from the bathroom windows, the generous space, the high ceiling, and the hardwood floors all combine to make a room that needed no “corrections,” just a fresh color (in this case white to show off the bold colors) and something interesting on the ceiling. When a set of vintage Bertoilla chairs became available the terrace fell into place, a secluded spot for friends, a glass of wine, and an evening breeze.

Biography Designer Stephen Mooney’s unique point of view is eclectic yet firmly rooted in the basic tenets of quality, comfort, and timeless elegance. He attributes his perspective to his Northern California childhood, the solid foundation of a Rhode Island School of Design education, and his wanderlust-fueled travel to the four corners of the world. Although keenly aware of avant-garde trends in décor, Stephen remains committed to creating interiors that transcend fashion for a more everlasting style while embracing revolutionary developments in materials and applications. “Classic interiors, whether contemporary or traditional, when done well, can stand the test of time,” he explains. “My designs involve intelligent use of color, the integrity of exquisite materials, craftsmanship and scale, and the delight of the unexpected.

74

The 2016 Designers’ Show House Journal

The goal is to provide my clients with environments that reflect their own personalities.” Stephen Mooney’s design studios and showroom are just steps off the fabled Worth Avenue in charming Via Parigi. Here, within earshot of the trickling fountain and shaded by lush bougainvillea, a close knit design team creates and manages projects that range widely in scale and scope – from modest pieds-aterre to grand manor residences – from around the corner to across the country.

Tucked away behind the family living areas and steps from the pool, the Master Guest Suite is an oasis where guests may retreat. Brunschwig & Fils’ large scale Chinoiserie print with pheasants and urns, “Le Lac”, upholstered on Brunschwig & Fils’ “Bedford” club chair, pays homage to the Art Deco architecture of the home and was the inspiration for the room. To help keep the otherwise dark room light the “Wythe Blue” from Benjamin Moore wall color is refreshing without being cold. The silk door treatments in Cowtan & Tout’s “Chinois Stripe” and the luxurious Brunschwig & Fils “Chatham” sofa, with its soft curves, make the room glamorous without being too formal. A custom queen headboard, heavily tufted and classically shaped, is upholstered in Brunschwig & Fils’ “Whitney Woven Plaid” and flanked by black lacquered Jansen side tables. The bed, with its custom mattress from E.J. Shrader, is luxuriously dressed with linens from Pioneer Linens. Two antique French side chairs have an updated look, upholstered in a crisp, modern Hermes teal, blue and emerald stripe fabric. A Louis XV desk is the perfect spot to write a letter or check e-mail. The large painting by local artist James Kerr helps to keep the room contemporary with its bold splashes of color.

This 1938 fire station in West Palm Beach’s Northwood neighborhood was converted into a unique home. After walking through the house and seeing the breakfast nook tucked away behind the kitchen, I had the vision of this space being an intimate and comfortable area to be enjoyed while sipping coffee and reading the morning news. The room was designed with crisp, warm and modern furnishings. Architectural details such as the back-light accent tiled wall were added as focal points. The dining table, from the CASA signature collection, has a stunning marble top and a painted, hefty metal base. The chairs were the perfect find for this space, made of lucite bodies with metal feet, which will give the room a more commodious feel. Soft sheer drapes give the room a light and airy feel. A subdued ambient light is reflected throughout the room thanks to the mid-century modern Spiral Lightolier chandelier, placed in the centered coffered ceiling. A lacquered bright white paint was added to the ceiling to reflect the light and give the illusion of a bigger and taller space. The mostly white room evokes elegance and sophistication with splashes of silvers, blacks and greys. To soften the room, a splendid rug is added below the dining space.
